Welcome to the 83rd year Cherry Festival

Karin Adams

By Karin Adams

Chamber Executive Director

The longest continuous hometown event in Idaho is here! The annual Emmett Cherry Festival will take place at the Emmett City Park June 14 through 17, and there are many exciting things to see and do.

Many in the community look forward to the traditional Cherry Festival favorites such as the parades, carnival, crowning of a queen, quilt displays, cherry pie eating contest, pit spit contests and more. Each year the Emmett Cherry Festival chooses a theme to be used in the parade and throughout the festival. The theme for this year’s festival is “Garden to Table” celebrating 83 years of the Cherry Festival. The Gem County Chamber of Commerce has been planning and preparing this event for months. It will be a great Cherry Festival. Thousands come daily

The Dimmick family with the sign for the family orchard, Cherry Stone Orchard on South Slope Road. From the left are son and ex-daughter-in-law Chris and Laura Dimmick, grandchildren Savannah, Cecila, Sophia, Andrew and Adam, granddaughter Sadie is not pictured and Sue and Al Dimmick.

Parade Grand Marshals Al and Sue Dimmick When they bought their 10acre, 697-tree cherry orchard in 1992, Al was a city boy with no idea what they were getting into. They arrived right in the middle of harvest and were able to finish the harvest with the help from other local growers. This first year, they harvested 36,000 pounds of cherries. They owned and operated Cherrystone Orchard on West South Slope for 23 years. The size and quality of the cherry crop was extremely dependent on the seasonal weather from November through July each year. Both Al and Sue consider the fruit-growing society of Gem County as one of the most helpful, caring group of folks you would ever want to be a part of. During their orchard years, Al served on the Gem County Orchard Review Board, Gem County Agriculture Board, Gem County Chamber of Commerce, Idaho Cherry Commission and the Idaho State Horticulture Society. Through it all, Sue was a strong support for everything.

They valued the help of the local orchard workers and enjoyed being able to offer some employment each year. Al and Sue were also blessed with the upbringing and aid from their six grandchildren at the orchard. When they decided to retire in 2015, there was no question they would stay here in Gem County, Valley of Plenty. Al and Sue thank all who came to their orchard over the years and wish for strong cherry crops for years to come. Festival History: The first mentioned Cherry Festival Parade Grand Marshal was Governor C. A. Bottolfsen. He was followed by the Payette Band. L. E. Bolt, a prominent fruit grower and mayor of Emmett, was Grand Marshal of the Cherry festival Parade in 1977.

Lucky Tongue Lucky Tongue was formed in 2006, first playing in rural pubs in North Idaho. The band, com prised of a father, Blaine, and his two sons, Dylan and Blade, quickly caught on fire. They had a distinctive magical influence that left the audience spell bound. Soon they were being booked at venues in Seattle and Portland. The band was then signed on by the Beyer Agency in Las Vegas. They have gone back to the roots of Rock N Roll adding the energy of youth while

surprising the audience of the world. The old classics of the ‘60s are played with such profound dynamics that the reform of that generation is revisited in the hearts and minds of listeners from age 20 to 70. Invisible Swordsman Clark and Russell Elkins of the Invisible Swordsmen are only 18 months apart in age and the two brothers have always been as tight as twins. Their musical career began when their father brought home a $10 electric guitar, which they plugged into the living room stereo system to rock out. They sold their first 4-H sheep, sold their Nintendo, pooled their money together and drove to the local pawn shop where they bought

their first quality guitar and amplifier. Clark and Russell shared that same guitar and took turns practicing. It took a few years, but the two brothers ended up in the same town attending the same university. That's where the two brothers played their first acoustic shows, accompanied by their older brother, Bryan, playing the bongos. When Clark graduated and was off the East Coast, Russell formed a new band with a few friends, including his younger brother, Ellis, on the hand drums. Sometimes accompanied by their younger brother, Ellis, on hand percussion, the brothers can be heard playing often in

various places around the area. The two brothers have fallen in love with the Gem State and plan be rockin' the valley for a long, long time to come. Emily Stanton Band Emily Stanton is an American soul and R&B vocalist, compos er, lyricist and performer. Born in Boise, she first became inter ested in music at an early age singing and playing the violin at age six. At age 16, she was offered a job in a local cover band playing bars and clubs. “I remember having to take my breaks outside because I wasn’t old enough to stay in the bar,” she said.

Continued from page 23 Emily attended college at Boi se State University to peruse her degree in Music Performance. After college, she moved and joined a bluegrass band that toured the Midwest. “I’ve always enjoyed play ing different styles of music, but when I moved to Utah, I discovered soul,” she said. The Grant Webb Band Grant Webb was born and raised in Emmett, Ida ho. He began playing mu sic at the early age of seven. He started playing the fiddle first and eventually learned to play the bass. He started playing music in church on Sundays and with his dad in a country band on weekends. He learned to play the drums and started filling in on gigs when the drummer couldn’t make it.

When Grant was around fifteen, he and his older brother Scott started playing with their dad (Brad Webb), in a western country band. The band started opening for national acts and received guitar sponsors and some radio time. He began playing with his family again including his dad, two brothers Scott and Pat and a family friend Mike. He eventually became the lead singer playing the guitar and also lead. Grant also added a drummer from Boise, Kendall Shew. He is a talented drummer and has a background of teaching at a musical school for drums. They have a great sound with a mix of Country, Southern Rock, and Blues. His shows are family oriented and good for all ages to watch.
