New developments in Meridian fun to see connect hbeech@mymeridianpress.com Phone: 208-465-8117 Twitter: @HollyBeechMP

I’m excited to see some of the new developments that have taken place in Meridian while I’ve been in South Africa for the past six months. PreFunk is opening a third Treasure Valley location in downtown Meridian today, the Meridian Library District is expanding to downtown, and the Boise Co-op will open at The Village at Meridian this fall. I’ve been to PreFunk’s Boise and Nampa locations a few times and really enjoy the people behind this local business, which brings a variety of popular and unique craft beers to the Treasure Valley. The owners are young entrepreneurs who know how to create a fun and attractive atmosphere. They picked a cool spot in Meridian: the old Heritage building at 77 E. Idaho Ave. I’ve enjoyed trivia nights at the downtown Nampa PreFunk, and I’m hoping this will become a tradition in Meridian, too. It’s cool to see the Meridian Library District taking strides to bring emerging technologies to Meridian and meet the needs of library users and business owners in the digital age. The downtown branch, to be located at 713 N. Main St., will feature useful tools such as 3D printers and computers with video, audio and other design software. Nick Groves, who will be the new library branch director, told Meridian Press that the branch will collaborate with New Ven-

TRENDING 3 Chinese company offers $23 billion for Micron

Chinese state-owned company Tsinghua Unigroup has reportedly launched a bid to buy Boise-based Micron Technology for $21 a share, or $23 billion total, Dow Jones reports. According to CNBC, the deal will be the largest-ever Chinese takeover of a U.S. company if it goes through. An analyst based in Shanghai told Reuters that the chances of the U.S. government approving the takeover would be slim because of political hurdles. $21 per share is 19.3 percent higher than the stock’s close on Monday. Micron shares have had a weak year, and are down nearly 50 percent since Jan. 1. Micron was founded in Boise in 1978 and has since grown to be one of the state’s largest employers with more than 5,000 Idaho employees. According to the company’s website, it employs more than 30,000 people worldwide.

Panera Bread prepares for first Meridian store

The former site of Fuddruckers at 3421 N. Eagle Road is being demolished to make way for a Panera Bread bakery. Panera is planning a 5,100-square-foot restaurant with a drive through on the 1.2-acre space along Eagle Road. Magnum Demolition based out of Boise is the contractor for the demolition of the Fuddruckers site, and a permit for the demolition was issued by the city of Meridian on June 30. Panera Bread is a bakery cafe that offers pastries, sandwiches and pastas. The company prioritizes using fresh ingredients and has removed artificial colors, sweeteners and preservatives from their products. The company recently opened its first Idaho location in Nampa.

Meridian Police donates old police vehicles to CWI

The Meridian Police Department is donating three used police vehicles to the College of Western Idaho’s new law enforcement training program. The vehicles – a 2008 Ford Expedition and two 2011 Ford Crown Victoria models - were set to be disposed of this year. They are in poor condition and will largely be used by CWI for stationary training exercises, Meridian Police Lt. John Overton said. Meridian Police and CWI are looking at more ways to collaborate. “We’re developing a very strong partnership with the College of Western Idaho,” Overton said.

tures Lab, which is also a new downtown Meridian development. New Ventures houses start-up businesses and is a resource for entrepreneurs. What I would love to see next in downtown Meridian is a cool coffee shop with cozy spaces to sit and write or to meet with people. There are also new developments in the Meridian city government and school district that I will be reporting on in coming weeks. It’s a big election year for the city, as the terms for Mayor Tammy de Weerd and City Council members David Zaremba, Charlie Rountree and Genesis Milam are up in 2015. The city is also in the midst of developing its budget for next fiscal year. Much has changed on the West Ada School District Board of Trustees since I left. There are two new by Holly Beech school board members, and there have been tense talks about the renewal of Superintendent Linda hbeech@mymeridianpress.com © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS Clark’s contract renewal. I’ll keep you updated on these issues as well as new business and community developments. I’d also like to see your news submissions and story suggestions. Email me at hbeech@mymeridianpress.com. The Sounds of Summer Can Be Awfully Loud

The summer means a few things for all of us: Motorcycle and convertible drivers are out and about, outdoor concerts are in full swing, and it’s the perfect time to do some recreational shooting and ATV riding. (Yard work also, but who wants to do that?) All of these activities have one thing in common: They can be highly damaging to your hearing.

July 8-13 Meridian Police made the following arrests or issued charges: 5 d riving under the influence 1 d riving under the

CWI is excited for the opportunity for students to train at Meridian’s public safety training center when it opens, Professional Technical Education Dean Will Fanning wrote to Meridian Police Chief Jeff Lavey on June 24. In the letter, Fanning said CWI is willing to donate surplus items such as office decor to the new facility. He also said a three-day training session on CWI’s new firearms simulator would be available to a Meridian Police officer at no charge. CWI purchased the simulator with the goal of making it available to area agencies, he said. CWI’s law enforcement training program starts next semester, chaired by former Nampa Police Chief LeRoy Forsman.

BuildZoom brings data to homeowners

San Francisco area company expands contractor network to Meridian

A

San Francisco Bay Area technology company is hoping to make home renovations much easier for people in Meridian with its web service called BuildZoom. Meridian was recently added to the BuildZoom network, and now contractors may have a new way to connect with customers. It works like a Google search just for contractors and has maps of recent projects so property owners can get a picture of what to expect in their area. David Petersen and Jiyan Wei started BuildZoom more than three years ago as a start-up while working other jobs. The duo’s inspiration partly came from their experience working on renovations on their own homes and finding a lack of information for bids and contractors. Wei said he was also at a point in by Zachary Chastaine zchastaine@idahopress.com his career where he wanted to work on new applications. The timing for © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS the two entrepreneurs worked well. “I had actually just purchased my first home, and I wanted to build a workflow application,” Wei said. “At that point, Dave wanted to start working on a new venture.” The goal with BuildZoom was to help people in a marketplace. Working from the Silicon Valley in California, the duo began developing and fundraising for BuildZoom.

“We started working evenings and weekends up until 2012, and we came to an accelerator,” Wei said. Now based in San Francisco, the group is bringing local data to different communities. BuildZoom takes information such as project costs, the number of clients a contractor has had and other metrics to make finding information relevant to homeowners easy. “One of the questions we kept seeing is people wanting to know who are their neighbors working with,” Wei said. Part of the BuildZoom website works as a map: different projects pop up in locations where they are completed. It shows the cost and what kind of work was done. Customers can also see who the was contractor on the project. The map of the Treasure Valley shows projects all over Meridian, Boise and Canyon County. A directory that lists contractors can be sorted by location, type of work performed and other ways to suit a customer’s needs. BuildZoom has a rating scale for contractors to help sort skilled, licensed and budget conscious contractors from the ones who miss appointments or who have outdated licensing. “We have the part of the site that is

more a general directory, but we wanted to have a local component,” Wei said. “This would be really interesting for consumers looking to hire for a specific trade.” Wei said BuildZoom fills a data gap on home improvement. While new construction is usually tracked, there are not always records for remodels. The data that BuildZoom pulls for its services has also drawn the attention of insurance assessors and realtors. “Our main … (customer) is someone who is about to take on a major project, not like DIY, but some significant improvement,” Wei said. “We have an application that lets them explain different aspects of the project.” For customers, BuildZoom is free to sign up. Contractors benefit from the extra exposure and improved listing by maintaining a healthy rating. One of the important aspects of the rating is to build trust that Wei said previously existed from word of mouth between clients. “Before these technologies existed (clients would) go ask people they know and go off instinct, and we’re really not changing that behavior,” Wei said. Meridian 12U baseball team to compete in world series

M

eridian’s All-Star 12-and-under youth baseball team will represent the Pacific Northwest at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland. The tournament runs July 24 through Aug. 1. “It’s the pinnacle of youth baseball here, and we made it,” coach Scott Whiles said. Last year’s 12U-70 (meaning for ages 12 and under, 70 feet between bases) team also made it to the Cal Ripken World Series and advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket. It’s been a good year for Meridian baseball. The 10U, 11U, 12U-70 and 12U-60 teams all won state championships, Whiles said. Many of this year’s 12U players have been on the same team for four years, winning four state championships and three regional championships. They competed in the Cal Ripken World Series for the 10-and-under bracket in 2013. The team has won 89 percent of its games over the past four years (149 wins, 18 losses), with a record of 33-4 this season. Whiles and assistant coaches Jason Anderson and Justin Buchanan, who all have sons on the team, have coached all four seasons. “They are one of the grittiest bunch of kids I’ve ever been around. I’ve never seen a group of kids that hate losing as much as this group,” Whiles said. During this year’s regional championship game, he said, the players fought their way to victory by scoring six runs in the last inning for a 6-3 win.

“We’ve been down as much as 9 to 2 and come back and won it,” he said. “There’s just something special about them, and it’s kind of hard to put your finger on it. They’re extremely competitive, and I think part of it is just their love for the game.” There are 12 middle-schoolers on the team from various schools. This is their final season all together, and in future seasons many will compete against each other. Next year some will play for the youth league for 13-year-olds, some will play on club teams, and others will try out for high school teams, Whiles said. “This is the end of the road for the Lemon Heads,” he said, fondly referring to the team’s nickname, which started out as a joke about their bright yellow hats. It’ll be hard for the team to close this chapter, Whiles said, but making it to the world series was the best ending they could have asked for.

Elected officials’ salaries MERIDIAN Mayor: $82,500 n City Council: $10,000 n Most recent raise for mayor and city council: Jan. 1 n City population: 83,596 (2013) n Council meetings are held four times a month. n

BOISE Mayor: $113,059 n City Council: $22,135 n Most recent raise for mayor: Jan. 1 n Most recent raise for city council: Jan. 1, 2014 n City population: 214,237 (2013) n Council meetings are held weekly. n

NAMPA Mayor: $74,432.28 n City Council: $10,930.66 n Most recent raise for mayor and city council: Jan. 1, 2008. Nampa’s compensation committee is proposing an increase to the mayor’s pay to $77,558.44 effective Jan. 1, 2016, and another increase to $81,281.25 effective Jan. 1, 2017. n City population: 86,518 (2013) n Council meetings are held twice a month. n

Committee recommends salary boost for Meridian’s elected officials

A

committee of residents is recommending that the Meridian mayor and City Council members take up to a 5 percent salary increase in the years 2016 and 2017. Per city code, committee reviews elected officials’ compensaTammy tion every municipal election year. de Weerd This year’s fiveMeridian mayor member committee voted unanimously by Holly Beech for the increase, hbeech@mymeridianpress.com saying it would be a © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS smart move for the future. As the city grows, so will elected officials’ workload and time demands. Another consideration for the pay raise was the desire to attract quality candidates. “It’s like recruiting for a business. How do we get the best people?” said committee member David Ballard, who serves on the Meridian Traffic Commission. “We feel there has to be an attraction. We want to bring that talent, that passion, to the city.” Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd makes $82,500, an increase from $80,000 in 2014. City Council members earn $10,000, up from $9,500 in 2014. The mayor and City Council members also receive a benefits package. City Council will take another look at the suggested raise at next week’s budget hearing. During Tuesday’s City Council workshop, officials were hesitant about a 5 percent raise because the city uses a 3-percent merit pool system for its employees. “If we get any raise at all, it can’t be more than our employees,” Councilman Keith Bird said. The council approved pay raises for the mayor

Recommendations of the compensation committee: n That the mayor and City Council’s salaries increase by up to 5 percent per year for the next two years. The mayor’s salary would increase up to $86,625 in 2016 and up to $90,956 in 2017. City Council members’ salaries would increase up to $10,500 in 2016 and $11,025 in 2017. n That the council president receive an additional 10 percent above the council members’ salaries while serving in that position. The council president would then receive up to $11,550 in 2016 and $12,128 in 2017. n That elected officials continue to receive benefits in the same amount they currently receive.

Compensation committee membership Brad Hoaglun, former Meridian City Council member Matt Stoll, Parks and Recreation Commission chairman n Rob McCarvel, Meridian Chamber of Commerce chairman n David Ballard, Meridian Traffic Commission member n Thomas Sauer, Meridian resident n Human Resources director Patti Perkins and City Attorney Bill Nary participated as non-voting members. n n

and council members two years ago. Councilman David Zaremba said he voted for the increase hoping the extra pay would attract younger candidates who are working and raising families. The council’s youngest member, Luke Cavener, chimed in. “When I decided to run, it wasn’t for the money,” he said. “I don’t think that a change in pay at all for council members

will spur people to want to run. It’s going to be people who really care about this community who ultimately decide to put in the time.” The review committee also suggested that the council president earn 10 percent more than other members because that role requires more work. Many council members voiced support for this increase.

WHEN: July 21, starting at 8 a.m. and running throughout the day WHERE: Meridian City Hall, City Council Chambers, 33 E. Broadway Ave

WHAT: Meridian’s mayor and city council will hear from city departments about budget needs and requests for next fiscal year.
