Me in Cuba: Like a kid in a candy shop W

connect hbeech@mymeridianpress.com

hen our plane landed in Cuba on Sept. 21, my group member sitting next to me said I was like a kid in a candy shop — so excited I couldn’t sit still. That’s because I got a taste of Cuba last year, and this second time around I knew how much discovery, exploration and joy I would encounter on this island. My church took a team of 13 people to Cuba for 10 days to work on projects and build relationships. I somewhat knew what to expect — the grand, aging architecture; the bustling streets; the warm and vibrant people; the beautiful, tropical landscape. I knew to take my own toilet paper into the restroom and to not be surprised when there was no toilet seat. I knew that I would need a packet of sugar in my tiny cup of thick, black coffee. I knew that Spanish in Cuba is tough to understand because they often skip over the letter “s.” I knew that trucks, cars, bicycles, pedestrians and horse-drawn carts all get uncomfortably close on the roadways, and no one seems to mind. I knew that life without Internet and text messaging is wonderfully freeing. I’m not alone in saying my visit to a foreign country prompted me

Top left: I played a spontaneous game of volleyball with these wonderful kids while taking a walk through the town of Pinar del Río. The girl was very excited to practice the English phrases she’s been learning in school. Top right: The town of Viñales is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and is a hot spot for tourism. Bottom left: Farmers and oxen are a common sight in the Cuban countryside, along with horse-drawn carts, bicyclists, pedestrians and people waiting under a tree for a bus or truck to pick them up. Bottom right: The church building we worked on in May of 2013 and again this year is making slow progress. We are now good friends with the women who live next door, who always welcome us in and offer us a seat and cup of coffee.

New lane opens on Eagle Road

A new southbound lane on Eagle Road between Franklin Road and Interstate 84 opened earlier this month. The Idaho Transportation Department said Eagle Road is the busiest non-interstate route in Idaho. Traffic is expected to grow from 40,000 vehicles a day to 80,000 vehicles per day in the next 20 years. The additional lane, according to ITD, will help relieve congestion, increase capacity and enhance safety along the corridor. The west side of the new lane includes a sidewalk. New traffic-signal heads and pedestrian-crossing buttons were installed at the intersections of Franklin Road, East St. Luke’s Road and I-84.

City highlights restaurants’ environmental stewardship

Three Meridian restaurants — Steve’s Cafe, Chick-fil-A and McDonald’s — received a Food Service Establishment Excellence Award from the city of Meridian. The new program recognizes food service establishments for preventing pollution, such as preventing oil and grease from entering the sanitary sewer system, which can potentially cause blockages and service disruptions. “We inspect about 380 restaurants a year, and these businesses rose to the top of our list for their success in preventing oil and grease from entering the city’s sanitary sewer system,” pretreatment inspector Randy Elliott said in a statement. “Fats, cooking oils and grease are hot water soluble. They solidify in wastewater lines, and can create messy clogs and backups — and expensive clean up bills.”

ustin Skeesuck knows that life doesn’t always go as planned. If life went as planned, he would be able to walk and jump and climb. If life went as planned, he would be able to feed and bathe himself. But, the 39-year-old from Meridian also knows that life is what you make of it. People are not defined by their limitations, he says, but by what they do in spite of them. This summer, Skeesuck became the first person to travel across 500 miles of the famed Camino de Santiago trail in Spain in a wheelchair. Pushed by his best friend Patrick Gray — along with a crew of supporters who spontaneously helped along the way — Skeesuck fulfilled a dream that sprouted more than two years ago when he saw a travel show about the Camino. “(The trail) was calling me for some reason,” he said. “You don’t get to go on journeys like this if you don’t say yes, you don’t take action, you don’t follow your heart.” Skeesuck has progressively lost the use of his legs and hands since he was a teenager because of a rare autoimmune disease. But he hasn’t lost his passion for traveling, and he runs a website called The Disabled Traveler to show others in similar situations that they can still explore the world. “Life is not over because you have a disability,” Skeesuck said. “You can still achieve amazing things. You can still go do things, whatever you put your mind to, if you take action and go for it.” Skeesuck and Gray, friends since birth, have wanted to take a unique trip together for years. When Gray heard about Skeesuck’s dream to by Holly Beech hike the Camino, he jumped right in hbeech@mymeridianpress.com and said, “I’ll push you.” © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Not everyone was so quick to be supportive. “We had so many people literally tell us, ‘You’re stupid.’ … And that’s the nice way of saying it,” Skeesuck said. Undeterred by skeptics, the two friends began planning and training for their 34-day journey, which began in June. The months leading up to the trip were not easy — they had to figure out how to fund the trip, how to get a wheelchair over steep and rough terrain, how to leave behind their wives and young kids for six weeks. “Probably the most significant training we did was mental,” Gray said. “I don’t know how much praying we did, but it was a lot. And that’s what carried us for sure, more so than our physical training.” A documentary about the journey, called “I’ll Push You,” is in the works. Weaved throughout the film will be diverse stories of fellow pilgrims that Skeesuck and Gray met along the way. “There’s a unique community that’s involved in the Camino. You have people from all over the world, every walk of life, every religion, every background you could imagine, and they’re all there for a common reason,” Skeesuck said. “Day after day, people just poured their heart out to us.” Many people were searching for something, he said. One woman witnessed her dad’s murder just a few months ago. Another was re-

His life story has hardships of its own. But on the Camino, with a clear mind and deep gratitude for supportive family, friends and strangers, Skeesuck said he knew he was where he was supposed to be. “Life is never a straight line. It zigzags, goes up and down, backwards, forwards,” he said. “I’ve had my fair share of bumps for sure, and I was just so grateful to be like, OK, cool, I think I’m doing the right thing.”

He asked Richter’s students, “How many of you think Ms. Richter spends money out of her own pocket for

Autism community seeks to build gathering place

Harvest Bowl fundraiser at Big Al’s is first fundraising effort

by Holly Beech

Treasure Valley woman whose husband and son have Autism Spectrum Disorder said there’s no venue where families like hers can socialize and learn about resources. But she hopes to change that soon. Diana Abramowski started a friend group with another parent in 2010 so their children with autism could build social skills together. That’s when she noticed how many families were hungry for support. “Over time we saw how significant the benefits were as more and more people came. It was just unbelievable,” she said. Last year, Abramowski founded a nonprofit called A Social Place, which holds weekly gatherings for youth and young adults with autism. The nonprofit also partners with community organizations to put on quarterly events.

The group meets at the Lake Hazel Branch Library in Boise, but A Social Place needs a permanent meeting place and resource center, Abramowski said. The nonprofit’s first fundraiser for a new facility is the Harvest Bowl Oct. 25 at Big Al’s. Individuals and bowling teams are encouraged to raise money and enjoy an afternoon of bowling. About 1 in every 68 children are diagnosed with autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With such a widespread impact, Abramowski is calling on all sectors of the community to join the cause, from doctors to educators to business professionals to law enforcement. “We need to build a one-stop facility for individuals with autism to help their families,” she said. Many families aren’t aware of resources, and they don’t know how to help their autistic child success-

LOCAL NEWS New Meridian coordinator helps small businesses get started

S

tarting a business from scratch can be intimidating. What permits do you need? What agencies do you need to talk to? Where do you start? When asked for feedback, small business owners told Meridian’s Community Development Department that it could do a better job helping new entrepreneurs through Kristy Vigil the process. In response, the city created a new Coordinator position of small business coordinator, filled by veteran city planner Kristy Vigil in October. Vigil is now the go-to source for those who are by Holly Beech starting or expanding a hbeech@mymeridianpress.com business in Meridian. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS “I’m a small business owner myself, and so I know how overwhelming and daunting that can be to start your own thing,” she said. Vigil walks her clients through the process, explaining what forms they’ll need to fill out along the way. “I’m able to assist them with knowing which other agencies they need to speak with, like the Secretary of

Broadway Ave. business coordinator on n 884-5533 an as-needed basis, but n kvigil@meridiancity.org the city would like to make it a full-time position if the demand continues to grow. So far, she has worked with more than 20 business owners. “I’ve helped a few people from the very beginning to the very end, and they were so grateful to have somebody out there looking out for them and listening to their concerns and being that single point of contact,” Vigil said. “If they have concerns with anything — building permit, public works, etc. — I facilitate their contact with all that.”

In Meridian and most other Idaho cities, business owners don’t need a license, but they do need a business permit. That’s where things got sticky before Vigil served as coordinator. Entrepreneurs would stop by the city clerk’s officer, learn that they didn’t need a business license and walk away thinking they were good to go, Community Development Director Bruce Chatterton said. Now, the clerk will direct those entrepreneurs to Vigil. The downfall of not requiring business licenses, Chatterton said, is there’s no way to know how many businesses are in Meridian or what their success rate is. The city tried to start business registry but couldn’t generate support from the business community, he said.
