So you’re not pregnant? My bad. I

have a policy of never, ever asking a woman about her pregnancy unless it’s obvious she’s about to pop. I’ve heard too many horror stories of people who asked a woman about her due date or baby’s gender only to learn that there’s no bun in the oven. As the inquirer, there’s no way to recover in that situation. You just have to endure the agonizing awkwardness and vow to never ask that dreadful question again. A second reason why I avoid that question is because I know what it’s like to be on the other end of it. Last year in Cuba, one of the pastor’s wives touched my stomach and gleefully congratulated me on my baby-to-be. Later during the trip, a small boy pointed at my mid-section and said with a smile, “Embarazada!” (the Spanish word for pregnant). Ouch. I didn’t wear that dress again for a year. I comforted myself by thinking, “You were just bloated from all that fried food,” or, “You were just slouching because you’re like a foot taller than everyone.” When I returned to Cuba last month, I found myself standing up extra straight and sucking in my gut whenever I met someone new. I wore a pencil skirt instead of a dress that bunched up at the waist. This

Special school elections are expensive, inconvenient

Oct. 8-14 Police made the following arrests or issued charges: 1 domestic verbal 1 unlawful entry 4 possession of a controlled substance 3 possession of drug paraphernalia 1 juvenile possession of tobacco 2 commercial burglaries 2 driving under the influence 1 first-degree murder 1 grand theft 1 concealing evidence

Thumbs down to all the special elections the West Ada School District is allowed. It’s inconvenient to have to make special arrangements in order to vote. It’s really inconvenient to have to do it more than once for each election. The reason given is that there are so many other issues being voted on they’re afraid their issue will be overlooked or not given the attention it deserves. Can it be that they’re hoping more teachers and their friends and families turn out to vote than anyone else, giving them a clear advantage? If it’s not intentional, it sure looks that way. Elections are expensive, and our tax dollars pay for it. Cut the cost and the inconvenience and have one election for all issues. Asking for more money to support the schools is just part of the process, but it shouldn’t cost the taxpayers extra time and money to vote on it. n

pregnancy myth would never again see the light of day. Well, my efforts failed. This year when I met another pastor’s by Holly Beech wife — someone I didn’t meet last year hbeech@mymeridianpress.com — she got a big smile on her face and ex- © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS claimed in Spanish, “Oh, you were the one who was pregnant last year!” So, the myth lived on! Not quite the legacy I was going for. At least no one touched my stomach this time. To further complicate matters, I accidentally spread another myth about myself this year: that I’m engaged. When I learned Spanish in school, I was taught that “novio” meant “boyfriend.” Cubans, I’ve discovered, use “novio” to mean “fiance.” It took a me few times of being asked about my wedding plans before I realized the error of my ways. That’s not so bad, though. I’d much rather be mistaken as an engaged woman than a pregnant one.

Meridian Police have arrested a man suspected of killing his father in January of 2013. Police arrested 60-year-old Anthony Conner at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at a local fitness club. Officers started investigating Conner after the death of his father, 87-year-old Otis Conner. Anthony Conner had told police that his father died after falling from a ladder. The coroner ruled Otis Conner’s cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head. Conner was arrested after an Ada County Grand Jury returned an indictment for first-degree murder, grand theft, forgery, and concealing evidence. He was arrested without incident and placed in the Ada County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Workshop displays record-setting truck powered by vegetable oil

Reuseum Educational Inc. and Greenspeed Research are hosting a free open-house workshop about aerodynamics. The workshop is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at The Reuseum, 108 W. 33rd St. in Garden City. In 2012, Greenspeed Research of Boise set the land speed record for a vehicle powered by vegetable oil. Visitors can see the truck Saturday and learn about Greenspeed’s goal to set a new land-speed record. The workshop will also feature an interactive lesson on vehicle aerodynamics and wind resistance. Visitors will be able to design and build their own car models to see how they perform in a wind tunnel.

Officials lower Amity Road speed limit by school

Concerns about traffic safety have spurred officials to lower the speed limit and extend the school zone time at Mary McPherson Elementary in Meridian, according to the Ada County Highway District. ACHD Commissioner Mitch Jaurena initiated changes after noticing an increase in traffic during the school drop-off and pick-up times. Together with Principal Khristie Bair, Ada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Craig Durrell, and Idaho Pedestrian and Bicycle Alliance Executive Director Cynthia Gibson, the speed limit along Amity Road before and after the school zone has been lowered from 50 mph to 45 mph, and an additional five minutes have been added to the school zone flashing beacons. The speed limit in the school zone is still 20 mph. “We’ve had some concerns for traffic safety as our school has grown in the last few years,” Bair said in a statement. “Our school has grown from 380 students to 540 students in the last few years, and with that comes increased parent traffic. We’ve also got some new housing around the school, which means more kids are walking to school.” Commissioner Jaurena says this situation is not unique to Mary McPherson Elementary. He and ACHD Commissioner Rebecca Arnold recently met with Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd to discuss issues and improvements that could be made throughout the West Ada School District.

Gay couples make history, become first to marry in Ada County

Adam Eschbach/MP

Front page: Kari and Wendi Trottier-Whitsitt hold hands after getting married outside the Ada County Courthouse Wednesday morning in Boise.

marriage benefits Federal law provides 1,138 benefits, rights and protections to married couples, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Marital status affects areas such as taxes, retirement savings, immigration, family and medical leave and health benefits. Boise attorney Deborah Ferguson, who argued the case against Idaho’s gay marriage ban, said she doesn’t know of a specific list that outlines the rights provided to married couples in Idaho. But Idaho couples’ marriages must be recognized by the state before they can reap federal benefits, she said. Marital status has a profound impact, she said, in areas like inheritance and property rights, guardianship and Social Security. “My income alone makes me have to pay higher premiums for my Medicare, and now that we can file joint returns, I can pay the base Medicare amount,” said Jim Wordelman of Meridian, who married his partner of 34 years, Guy Wordelman, on Wednesday.

background In 2006, Idaho voters approved adding a gay marriage ban to Idaho’s Constitution. In November, four lesbian couples filed suit in U.S. District Court, arguing that the ban went against the equal-protection clause of the U.S. Constitution, according to The Associated Press. Two of those couples were among the first to get a marriage license Wednesday in Ada County. A federal court struck down the gay marriage ban earlier this year, and the state appealed the ruling in the 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals. The appeals court upheld the lower court’s ruling Tuesday, but U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy granted an emergency stay. Then, the high court ruled on Friday that same-sex marriages in Idaho could proceed, AP reports, and six gay couples got marriage licenses in northern Idaho’s Latah County. Other county clerks waited on direction from state officials. Idaho Gov. Butch Otter said in a statement Tuesday that he disagrees with the court’s ruling, but the state has done what it can through the courts to defend traditional marriage. AP reports that the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will ultimately approve a statewide licensing format.

F

or the first time in history, gay couples walked out of the Ada County Courthouse on Wednesday with a marriage license in hand. Each couple was greeted by an electrifying crowd, who cheered and blew bubbles into the sky as love songs blasted in the background. “I took my kids out of school to bring them here because I wanted them to know how important it was,” Ella Miller of Boise said. Holding flowers and their new marriage license, Becca Lewis and Michaela Geszvain of Middleton hugged each other and wiped away tears, moved by the crowd’s support. “It’s really surreal,” Lewis said. “We’ve been waiting so long that it’s weird to think that it’s finally here, and it’s finally happening.” The months leading up to today have been a roller coaster, Wendi Trottier of Boise said while standing in the marriage license line with her partner Kari Whitsitt. The couple — along with several others — Adam Eschbach/MP came to the courthouse twice last week to get Mistie Tolman and Karen McMillin, of Meridian, are greeted by a large crowd outside the Ada County married, but both times a new development in Courthouse Wednesday morning after getting a marriage license. the legal battle over Idaho’s gay marriage ban stopped them. “It’s like emoby Holly Beech tion ordinance like Boise has, Gaona-Lincoln said she’s still at hbeech@mymeridianpress.com tions being jerked,” Whitsitt said. risk for housing and employment discrimination. “You get so excited and then it just is © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS “We still need to make sure that they are people elected to swept out from under your feet.” There were no last minute court office that are going to add the words ‘sexual orientation’ and orders Wednesday, and the clerk’s office began issuing the li- ‘gender identity,’ or else Idaho will just continue to have a patchwork of equality,” she said. censes at 10 a.m., issuing more than 22 by noon. That’s not unusual for a day, staff said, but it’s a lot for a two-hour span. By 1 p.m., 31 marriage licenses had been issued. Couples laughed, cried and embraced loved ones as their relationship became legally recognized. Having a marriage license doesn’t change their commitment to each other, Whitsitt and Trottier said, but it will simplify things like filing for taxes and getting health benefits. “This is a great country, and we all have a lot of rights, and unfortunately people don’t really recognize the rights that they have until they don’t have them,” Trottier said. “It would never occur to me that I could step into a hospital and be told that I wasn’t family, that I couldn’t go and see her.” Mistie Tolman of Meridian, co-chair of the Add the Words campaign, said she’s excited to have all 1,138 federal rights that come with marriage. “We’re excited to have all of them, to be able to know that it can’t be taken away from us, to know that nobody can swoop in and say, ‘No, you’re not her next of kin,’” Tolman said. She wore a white outfit and sparkly blue TOMS — her “wedding shoes” — while standing in line with her partner Karen McMillin and their kids. The two celebrated a wedding ceremony last month. “The validation of knowing that we’re recognized and our love is equal, it means the world,” Tolman said.

Baby is an 11-year-old male Chihuahua/Papillion mix. He is neutered, house trained, and up to date on vaccinations. He is a very good lap dog but is new to the rescue and overwhelmed with the other dogs, noise and strangers. He walks on lead well and enjoys going for walks. He is a little cautious of strangers handling him, but once he feels comfortable, he warms up and accepts handling. Baby will need a quiet home with a warm, snuggly lap to call his own. He’ll need a home without younger children because of his age and size.

T

hree years ago, a lawyer in Wichita, Kansas, had clients in need of help. The lawyer, Brad Williams, and his wife agreed to provide a foster home for the clients’ daughter. “She was supposed to come for the weekend. She stayed two years with us,” Williams said. He had no idea this relationship would open the door to the next step in his career. “She went to work at Freddy’s (Frozen Custard and Steakburgers), which was about three miles from our house, and she never complained,” he said. “She liked going there, and she liked how by Holly Beech hbeech@mymeridianpress.com she got treated.” The more Williams and his wife dined at © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Freddy’s, the more he admired the values and quality of the restaurant. Freddy’s was founded in Wichita by a World War II veteran and his two sons more than a decade ago. It eventually grew into a popular franchise, inspiring Williams to get involved. He and business partners have opened up five Freddy’s restaurants in Arizona, where Williams now lives, and have five more planned for Idaho. Idaho’s first Freddy’s opened in Meridian on Sept. 30, and more locations are set to open in Nampa, Caldwell, Idaho Falls and Pocatello.

FAMILYHUB Support local schools

MERIDIAN — Get out, have a great time and support local schools while you’re at it. From 5-9 p.m. tonight and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Renaissance High School, 1307 E. Central Drive, is holding its annual fair and fundraiser. Sticking with its name, Renaissance High is going for a Renaissance theme — the fair will include authentic medieval games, activities, food and music. There will also be a Scholastic book fair, silent and online auctions, handmade arts and crafts and local vendors. Admission to the Renaissance High annual fair is free for all ages.

Williams wants his employees to have a great experience working at Freddy’s, as his foster daughter did. “I always tell them … ‘You will not have another job in your whole life that you will have more fun at than working at Freddy’s,’” Williams said. “It’s been really rewarding to watch kids from various backgrounds that haven’t had many chances in life, to just watch them grow up and mature. … We got 18-year-olds that know how to say ‘yes, sir’ and ‘no, sir,’ so we do it a little differently.” Freddy’s polite service, relaxed atmosphere and fresh, hot hamburgers harken back to small-town America in the 1950s, Williams said. “For people my age, it reminds them of the way your mother or grandmother used to cook a burger, when she threw it in the skillet and you could hear it sizzling in there,” Williams, age 60, said. “We play old ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll music. It does have a family-oriented theme to it, and people will stay in our restaurants longer than you can imagine, because they have a good time.” Freddy’s tries to spread the love outside of the restaurant walls, too. “We try to be really active in the communities that we’re in, with the schools and churches, so we do a lot of fundraisers,” Williams said.

LOCAL NEWS Judge suggests mediation in Ada County vs. Meridian, Garden City lawsuit

M

ediation outside the courtroom might be the best path for solving the dispute between Ada County vs. Meridian and Garden City over who should pay for magistrate court services, a judge said last week. After hearing oral arguments on Oct. 8, 4th Judicial District Court Judge Steven Hippler instructed lawyers on both sides to ask their clients — the mayors, city council members and county commissioners — about their willingness to try mediation rather than proceed with the trail. Attorneys will report back to Hippler on Oct. 22. Hippler said bringing in a neutral, third-party mediator — such as a retired district judge from another county — might help both sides navigate and understand the issue and come to an agreement. The main questions that need to be answered, by Holly Beech Hippler hbeech@mymeridianpress.com said, are: 1. Who © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS is obligated to pay for magistrate court services — the cities or the county? 2. If the cities are obligated to pay for these services, do they owe the county money because they didn’t pick up the slack sooner? Past meetings to try to resolve the conflict haven’t gone well, Garden City attorney Frank Walker said. The county sued both cities in late 2010 and sent an invoice to each city for almost $500,000, arguing that the cities need to comply with a 1994 court order that they help pay for magistrate court, which handles cases like divorce, speeding tickets and small civil disputes. The cities contend that the court order was invalid because the cities weren’t given a chance to present their side. They filed a motion to reconsider the order, but the motion was never taken up in court. When the county started making plans

NEXT HEARING 1 p.m., Oct. 22 Judge Steven Hippler n Ada County Courthouse, 200 W. Front St., Boise n Attorneys will discuss with the judge their clients’ willingness to try mediation. n n

for a new, consolidated courthouse in 1995, the cities thought the magistrate court issue had been dropped, Walker said. “The 1994 order was never brought up after the construction of this courthouse,” he said. “So you can’t really blame the cities for not being proactive — it’s a non-issue anymore. It became an issue when the county said, we’re not getting by, you’re going to have to start complying with the 1994 order. … It’s like demanding rent, but if I invited my brother to come live with me.” Ada County Chief Civil Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Theodore Argyle said the court order and the following correspondence between the cities and court officials made it clear that the cities were required to help foot the bill. Meridian and Garden City each make up about 10 percent of the magistrate division workload, according to the lawsuit. In fiscal year 2010, each city’s share of the magistrate division amounted to $660,350.80. If the court orders mediation, county commissioners will participate in a meaningful way, Argyle said. But in the past, he said, the cities’ philosophical and economic arguments against the county’s position have blocked any kind of resolution.

NEXT STEP If the cities and county see mediation as a worthwhile effort, then that’s the next step. If not, Hippler will decide what’s next. Both sides are requesting a summary judgment in their favor, meaning the case wouldn’t go to a full trial.

Sewer fees increase for developers in Meridian meeting with a financial group in Seattle shed light on necessary projects that Public Works had missed, Barry said. Of the $179 million investment, $83.5 million is needed because of the new EPA standards. Nampa and Boise’s public work departments are facing improvement costs of over $100 million, Barry said.

RATEPAYERS PITCH IN Public Works’ plan to fund the improvements will operate on Meridian’s “pay as you go” philosophy, Barry said. Almost $100 million will come from the enterprise fund balance and from dedicated funds in the Capital Improvement Plan. Ratepayers will also help foot the bill. Last month, city council approved a 2 percent water and sewer rate increase, along with a $3.75 monthly surcharge for sewer customers. This will add an extra $5 to the average ratepayer’s monthly bill. Sixty-seven percent of Public Works’ revenue comes from ratepayers, and 19 percent comes from the collection of fees, including the sewer connection fees, Barry said. Even with the rate increases, Public Works’ plan to pay for the improvements is coming up $19.3 million short. This funding gap could correct itself, Barry said, if the city’s population growth is higher than anticipated.

Neighboring cities are going through the same process. Meridian’s facility upgrades will cost an estimated $179 million over the next 10 years — $9 million higher than Public Works’ previous prediction. A recent

The Idaho Press-Tribune is partnering with several local businesses to sponsor the event at Northwest Nazarene University in the Swayne Auditorium from 7 to 9 p.m.. It’s a chance for attendees to learn new cooking tips from a culinary specialist and take home tasty recipes to try out for themselves. “It’s a really a great, entertaining show,” Idaho Press-Tribune advertising director Sean Evans said. “When you come into the event,

you’re going to feel like you are going into someone’s home.” Though the event normally sees a crowd of about 800 to 900 people in attendance, Evans said the decor and layout of the event makes it feel more homey. Attendees will receive the Taste of Home magazine filled with each recipe Kristi Larson is preparing on the stage and more recipes to test at home. Larson will give pointers and some tricks about the recipes as she cooks the various items that won’t be going to waste. At the end of the event, the prepared food will be given away in a drawing. n less than three weeks, Idaho voters will choose who they want to represent them in state and local offices. To better acquaint voters with candidates, Meridian Press, Meridian Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council are hosting a candidate forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Meridian City Hall. “We hope we’re helping to get the word out about who’s running and why they’re running,” Meridian Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Anne Little Roberts said. A panel will ask questions of several legislative candidates and incumbents from districts 14, 20, 21 and 22. In the last half hour, Ada County Highway District candidates for district 3 — Kent Goldthorpe and incumbent Mitch Jaurena — will take the stage.
