COMMUNITY

When the Black Friday buzz dies down, the spotlight will turn to Small Business Saturday. Local cities promote this annual tradition but have different levels of engagement.

The couple who donated the tree for Meridian’s tree lighting ceremony in Generations Plaza met in the Philippines during a military tour, and now they’ve been married for 54 years.

Meridian: Rumor about city’s candle decorations is false

A

rumor is floating around that the city of Meridian put up some distasteful Christmas decor along Main Street this year. If you’ve seen the photo on social media, you know what I mean. The picture shows Christmas decorations hanging on light posts. The decorations are supposed to look like candles with holly berries and leaves, but they resemble something rather inappropriate. The rumor, thankfully, is false. City spokeswoman Kaycee Emery said the photo of the candle decorations isn’t from downtown Meridian. The city’s Christmas decor has been snowflake-themed for several years, she said. The city put up the snowflake decorations this weekend. Emery said she has no clue how the candle picture got connected to Meridian. “I think it’s just some sort of viral picture,” she said. “I’m not sure where it came from.” Some people are accusing the city of putting

up the candle decorations only to remove them when the cringeworthy photo started to spread. That’s also not true, Emery said. The decorations were snowflakes from the start. Also, she said, it would be too costly and by Holly Beech t ime-consuming hbeech@mymeridianpress.com to redo the decora- © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS tions. A friend showed me the picture this weekend, before I knew it was a rumor. I thought the decorations were an embarrassing choice for the city. I’m happy to learn that glowing snowflakes — not easily misconstrued candles — will be lighting Main Street this holiday season.

wide emergency management but would like to see clear definitions of the emergency department’s responsibilities. County commissioners responded in a Nov. 19 letter, saying: “Not only do these suggestions come at the eleventh hour — as nearly all the members have already signed — but the Joint Powers Agreement was the product of many discussions and numerous meetings which Mayor Tammy de Weerd and a Meridian City Council member participated in.” The concern could have been easily addressed through a phone call, commissioners said. Niemeyer said he’s “a little disappointed” with the response, but the city is committed to working with the county to find a solution. He said the two parties will likely meet next week. Though he supports the joint powers agreement, Niemeyer said it needs to define who’s responsible for trainings, exercises and after-action reports. “I think because there’s been a lack of good definition, there’s been a lot of frustration that’s built over the years,” he said. “Nobody knows exactly where we’re going, how we’re going to get there, and who’s responsible for helping us get there.”

At that time the applicant may be considered for an additional three-year term. Applicants must be Meridian residents and age 18 or older. Find an application at meridiancity.org (under the “City Government” tab) or pick one up from the Meridian City Clerk’s office. I-84 between Meridian, Eagle interchanges returns to 4 lanes

Interstate 84 between Meridian and Eagle interchanges returned to four lanes in both directions this week, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. “While work on the interstate will slow down for winter, construction at the Meridian Interchange will continue. Drivers need to remember to leave early, pay attention and slow down,” said Jayme Coonce, ITD project engineer. Both westbound and eastbound I-84 will remain open to four lanes of traffic until February when crews will resume work. At that time, lane restrictions and a crossover traffic pattern will be put back in place on I-84 between Meridian and Five Mile. The project is expected to be complete by late next year.

After shopping comes Giving Tuesday There’s Turkey Day, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Did you know there’s also a day next week to focus on generosity? Giving Tuesday — or #GivingTuesday — is now in its third year, following Cyber Monday. “On Tuesday, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give,” reads the movement’s website, givingtuesday.org. Giving Tuesday was founded by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations. Now, dozens of influential leaders and organizations are on board. John Boyd, president and chief executive officer of Mission Aviation Fellowship in Nampa, encourages Idahoans to join the trend. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday place such a huge emphasis on buying and materialism,” he said in a statement. “GivingTuesday is a way to turn our thoughts toward helping others.”

Small Business Saturday lacks luster in Meridian National event puts local shops, restaurants in spotlight

S

mall Business Saturday, now in its fifth year, is a national movement to encourage shoppers to visit locally-owned stores and restaurants in the wake of the Black Friday frenzy. Boise and Nampa’s downtown organizations have fun events planned for Saturday, such as raffles, live music and, in Nampa, a tree-lighting ceremony. More than 130 Boise businesses are on board with Small Business Saturday festivities this year, Downtown Boise Association Executive Director Kâren Sander said. Though the city of Meridian and the Meridian Chamber of Commerce promote Small Business Saturday, Meridian isn’t as abuzz as its neighbors about this event. That’s something the Meridian Downtown Business Association, which was founded this spring, hopes to change. “The Downtown Business Association is fairly new, and I imagine next year (Small Business Saturday) will be more of a push for us,” said association president Joe Kozlowski, a by Holly Beech downtown Meridian law hbeech@mymeridianpress.com firm owner. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Though he’d like to see more retail stores downtown, Kozlowski said what’s really needed is more awareness of what’s already there. “You want great restaurants, downtown Meridian has great restaurants. If you need a bike, we’ve got a great bike shop,” he said. “Even right here on Idaho (Avenue), there’s Preece Chocolates. I mean that’s hands-down the greatest chocolate shop around.” Preece Designer Chocolates owner Marji Granander said she spent a lot of energy promoting Small Business Saturday in years past, including extending the shop’s hours, but it didn’t pay off. This year the store is open its normal Saturday hours — noon to 4 p.m. — and shoppers who spend more than $25 will get a goodie bag. Meridian’s big downtown push starts Dec. 1 with the downtown business decorating contest, followed by the Winter Lights Parade and tree lighting ceremony Dec. 5 and the Children’s Winterland Festival Dec. 6. Kozlowski said these events draw a lot of people downtown and expose what Meridian has to offer. “There’s the mall, there’s The Village, there’s a lot of other places that people can go,” he said. “We just want to say, hey look, if you want authentic and real down-home kind of stuff, come to Meridian.”

Shoppers are encouraged to dine and shop at small, locally-owned businesses Saturday during Small Business Saturday. The newly formed Meridian Downtown Business Association, along with the Meridian Chamber of Commerce and the city of Meridian, supports the movement, launched by American Express in 2010.

downtown association said. “It just gives the community another option outside of the Black Friday, big-box shopping,” she said. American Express spearheaded the Small Business Saturday movement in 2010. Businesses must accept American Express to be included in certain promotional materials, such as the online small business locator map. American Express will give credit back to customers who use an American Express card to shop local on Small Business Saturday. But there are other marketing opportunities for businesses that aren’t American Express merchants. In Boise, businesses and economic organizations are partnering to be “neighborhood champions.” American Express is providing promotional materials for these businesses, like doormats, shopping bags, stickers and posters. Consumers who visit 16 neighborhood champion stores and get their “passports” stamped will be entered into a drawing for a downGOAL OF SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY town gift card. WHAT QUALIFIES AS A SMALL BUSINESS? A small business is technically one that employs fewer than 500 employees, according to the Small Business Administration. As of 2010, small businesses represented 97 percent of all Idaho employers and employed 58 percent of the private-sector labor force. For Small Business Saturday, American Express defines a small business as one that has 25 or fewer locations. Franchises must have fewer than 101 stores, or fewer than 21 corporate-owned stores. The goal of Small Business Saturday is to remind people to shop at small, local stores — not just the “Wal-Marts and the Best Buys,” said Catie Bennett, an economic development specialist with the SBA Boise district office. “Even though I understand you are supporting your local economy with the Best Buys, … it’s nice to support the local mom-and-pop stores,” she said.

Couple donates tree for Meridian Christmas tradition

Front page and right: The Meridian Christmas tree, donated by Howard and Norma Boyle of Boise, will be lit during a ceremony Dec. 5 following the Winter Lights parade. The 30-foot blue spruce stands in Generations Plaza at the corner of East Idaho Avenue and North Main Street.

HOWARD BOYLE Donated blue spruce

I

n 1978, Howard Boyle planted a 4-foot blue spruce in his yard with his son. The tree has since grown to 35 feet tall, and it started to cause some problems. “The roots started coming up through the ground after all these years,” Boyle said. “And pine trees absorb everything else from the soil — I couldn’t plant anything else in the area.” The spruce, which now stands at about 30-feet tall in Generations Plaza, will be the center of a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony Dec. 5 after the Winter Lights Parade. Boyle’s daughter was sad to see the tree go, he said, but happy to know it was going to brighten up the holidays for other people. Though Boyle and his wife, Norma, live in west Boise, much of their roots are in Meridian. Their son and daughby Holly Beech hbeech@mymeridianpress.com ter went to Meridian Middle © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS and Meridian High School. Another son who died at 4 months old is buried in the Meridian Cemetery. Boyle, originally from Brooklyn, New York, served on three tours with the Navy in the Philippines, where he spent a combined 10 years of his life. That’s where he met Norma. The couple will celebrate their 54th anniversary soon. The family was based in Boise in the late 1960s, when Boyle served at a naval training center. The family returned to the Philippines from 1970 to 1974. They moved back to the Treasure Valley in 1975 when Boyle retired. The tree has been a part of the family’s lives for 36 years, so the yard looks a bit strange without it, Boyle said. The shade and the privacy it provided in front of the house are now gone — but so are the troublesome roots and pine needles, and thousands of people will get to enjoy the festive spruce throughout the holidays.

Century-old McFadden building demolished

D

owntown Meridian’s McFadden building, which in its prime was a bank and a grocery store, was demolished last week. The more than 100-year-old building on the by Holly Beech corner of East hbeech@mymeridianpress.com Broadway Avenue and East © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Second Street still belongs to the McFadden family, said the family’s real estate broker, Scott Nicholson with Boise Valley Commercial Real Estate. “We tried selling it as is,” he said. “Everybody loves that building, but it was just so big of a project to rehab it. … The building has some major structural deficiencies.” Demolition began Nov. 17. By the weekend, most of the 10,500-square-foot, twostory building had been reduced to a pile of bricks and rubble. The city was able to save the historic McFadden sign, Meridian spokeswoman Kaycee Emery said. The lot will remain empty until a developer with an idea comes along, Nicholson said. According to Meridian historian Lila Hill, the building was constructed in the early 1900s. The McFadden family later purchased part of the building and opened the McFadden Market. That’s been closed now for about 35 years, Hill said. The Meridian Exchange Bank occupied another portion of the building, and apartment units with fireplaces were used for a time in the second story, she said. The McFadden’s bought the bank’s side of the building after it closed in the 1940s, she said. It’s been vacant ever since. “We’ve all sat there and watched it deteriorate,” Hill said. The McFaddens sold the building to a developer in 2005, Nicholson said. But plans for a full-service grocery store and deli called the McFadden Market Co-op fell through. The building went into foreclosure during the recession, he said, and the McFaddens regained ownership. Cleora McFadden is the building owner, and her daughter, Carol McFadden, is the conservator.

ompass Public Charter School in Meridian has developed a partnership with Farmway Village, a migrant farm community in Caldwell. On Monday and Tuesday, 26 students and four teachers from Compass spent 36 hours at Farmway, working on projects to imby Meridian Press staff prove the apartments and news@mymeridianpress.com community grounds. Along with completing projects, the students had a chance to learn about the history of the migrant community and develop a new appreciation for Farmway residents. The student interest to participate in the annual service project is so immense that the opportunity is only open to the junior and senior students, according to a Compass press release. Compass focuses on developing students with a strong sense of civic responsibility. High school students must complete 200 hours of community service to graduate.

in your words Let’s up the fight against pancreatic cancer

Submitted photo

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. Volunteers from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Boise affiliate have been working to bring awareness of this disease to the Treasure Valley for the past five years. Obtaining proclamations for various cities around the state is one way to do that. The city of Meridian proclaimed November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month on Nov. 18. The proclamation was presented to Dwight Tovey, who lost his wife four years ago to pancreatic cancer and has been active with our organization since that time. All of our volunteers have some connection, including myself. I lost my partner, John Bradley, this spring. He was an 8 1/2 year survivor — one of the 6 percent who lived beyond five years. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and is slated to become No. 2 by 2020. It is our goal to see the five-year survival rate double by 2020. This year, 46,420 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 39,590 will die from the disease; 73 percent of individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die in the first year, most in three to six months. The fiveyear survival rate is just 6 percent. There is no early detection. The cancer can grow for up to 10 years before it is finally detected, and by then it is usually too late. There has been only one new drug approved by the FDA in over 10 years. Pancreatic cancer receives only 2 percent of the National Cancer Institutes budget, which may help explain in part why the survival rate is so low. In the fall of 2009, we started with a group of five individuals who wanted to make a difference. In September we held our fourth walk, PurpleStride, with 825 participants. We anticipate continued growth as we wage hope for those who are fighting now and those who are no longer able to. Learn more about pancreatic cancer and our organization at www.pancan.org.

Shoveling snow is a repetitive activity that can cause muscle strain to the lower back and shoulders. Injuries are more likely to happen to people who might not know they are out of condition. Here are some tips to follow to help you avoid injuries: • Lift smaller loads of snow rather than shovelfuls. • Bend your knees and lift with your legs rather than your back • Use a shovel with a shaft that allows you to keep your back straight while lifting • Prevent twisting by stepping in the direction in which you are throwing the snow • Take frequent breaks when shoveling. Stand up straight and walk around to extend the lower back A backward bending exercise will help reverse the excessive forward bending shoveling requires. Stand straight and tall and place your hands toward the back of your hips and bend backwards slightly for several seconds. If you, or anyone you know, are experiencing back pain, call our office for help.

LOCAL NEWS ‘SHORT’ DESIGN PATTERN OPTION, MERIDIAN ROAD INTERCHANGE

City of Meridian

Concept shown with stainless steel, powder coated.

City discusses Meridian Road Interchange art

T

he city of Meridian is looking at a $33,750 to $55,000 price tag for the artistic design that will be part of the new Meridian Road Interchange over Interstate 84. The almost 50-year-old bridge is being rebuilt, with construction expected to wrap up in late 2015. The art will be along the stainless-steel fence barrier that lines each side of the bridge. The tentative design — by Holly Beech hbeech@mymeridianpress.com which city council members discussed at Tuesday’s meeting — has birds, a sun and a cloud and wispy, wind-like © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS patterns, all colored gold. The proposed material is powder-coated stainless steel, same as the fencing, or an untreated stainless steel. The powder coating protects against corrosion. The city could also choose a more expensive stainless steel without the powder coating for about $10,000 more. At this week’s meeting, city council members capped the project expenses at $55,000. This expense will need to be added to the budget as an enhancement because it wasn’t part of this summer’s budget hearings. Council members were also presented with an option for a longer version of the pattern, which stretches across the entire bridge. That would be more expensive, costing between $47,500 and $77,000. Council members were informally split 3-3 on which pattern they preferred — the short or the long version — but in the end, the shorter, less expensive pattern won. The conversation is slated to continue at the next council meeting, 6 p.m. Tuesday at Meridian City Hall.

In response to Holly Beech’s Nov. 21 article about her upcoming, six-month trip to South Africa: n Judi Jones: “Really sad to read that Holly Beech is leaving us the end of the year but happy for the fantastic opportunity that awaits. You have been a real breath of fresh air for everyone who enjoys your reporting and will be sorely missed. Looking forward to your upcoming articles from South Africa!”

In response to the Nov. 14 article, “Food restrictions limit school fundraisers”: Bryan Leisle: “I’m all for NOT serving garbage to our kids. There’s plenty of healthy options available, food vendors just need to provide it.” n

MP: Meridian recently approved a contract for body-worn cameras for police officers. Do you think this is a good investment? n Lee Arthur Rice II: “They should have body cameras and dash cams … audio and visual to hold them accountable.” n Bryan Carter: “I pray that this investment continues to prove the investment we are making into our Law Enforcement, despite the continued falsification on a police report and false testimony in court.”

MP: The city of Meridian says the rumor about the city’s inappropriate candle decorations is false. (See Holly Beech’s column on page 2 for details.) Alicia Wilkinson: “Wow! Snowflakes since we’ve lived here.” n Colleen Elmer Hollis: “I thought the posted rumor was insulting.” n Cheri Machado Tarlini: “I saw that rumor and nearly made a complaint on it. Thank goodness for Google image search!” n Lori Palmquist: “Love the snowflakes!” n Luke Cavener (Meridian City council: “I received a lot of phone calls, texts and tweets n

about this rumor. Thanks Meridian Press for providing the facts.” n Cynthia Marie Scott: “The picture is all over social media and has been attributed to numerous different cities. Don’t believe everything you see online! I like the snowflakes by the way. They are seasonal and festive without favoring or excluding any particular group’s religious beliefs or traditions or lack thereof.”

In response to the Nov. 21 article about Bruce Gestrin’s retirement. Gestrin had worked in the West Ada School District for 24 years, most recently as deputy superintendent: n Cindy Park Schiller: “I am not in the West Ada District, but have had contact with both Bruce Gestrin and Jan Horning. Both are great people and West Ada has been lucky to have both of them!” n Bernadette Keefe Sexton: “My children are blessed to have Bruce helping to guide West Ada.” n Luke Cavener: “Bruce and I didn’t always see eye to eye, but he was always respectful and well educated on his issues.
