have a story I’d like to share, but just to give you a heads up, the setting is a bit awkward. This story takes place in a public restroom. (Pretty glamorous, right?) Anyway, I’m using a public restroom, and I hear a woman washing her hands at the sink. I don’t think she realized I was there. Suddenly she exhales loudly and mutters to herself, “Ugh, I look terrible.” Even though I don’t know this woman, I immediately think, “That’s sad, I wish she wouldn’t talk to herself that way.” My next thought was, “How many times have I told myself that exact same thing?” Like this woman at the sink, I see myself through a harsher lens than I see others. I give myself less grace than I give others. I think this is something many people struggle with. It’s easy to see the beauty and talents of other people but over-

Ajayi passed over for Mountain West offensive player of the year award Colorado State quarterback Garret Grayson, and not Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, was named the 2014 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year on Tuesday. Colorado State coach Jim McElwain also beat out Boise State coach Bryan Harsin for the Mountain West Coach of the Year Award. Ajayi, center Marcus Henry, defensive end Kamalei Correa and safety Darian Thompson landed on the all-Mountain West first team. Boise State (10-2, 7-1 MW) has won seven consecutive games entering Saturday’s Mountain West Championship Game against Fresno State. Ajayi has rushed 303 times for 1,619 yards and 24 touchdowns and also has 45 receptions for 536 yards and four touchdowns this season. He was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week three different times, including this past week after rushing for 229 yards and five touchdowns in a 50-19 win over Utah State. The redshirt junior leads the nation with 348 total touches and his 2,155 total yards lead the Mountain West. But Grayson was the league’s pick for offensive player of the year after leading the Mountain West in several areas including passing yards (3,779), touchdowns (32).

County renames justice center after retiring prosecutor

The FACES Family Justice Center in Boise has been renamed to the “Greg H. Bower Family Justice Center,” dedicated in honor of the retiring Ada County prosecutor. County commissioners announced the building dedication Tuesday and signed a proclamation designating Dec. 2 as Greg H. Bower Day in Ada County. Commissioners Dave Case and Jim Tibbs were joined by a crowd of about 70 people at the family justice center, county spokeswoman Jessica Donald said in a news release. Several individuals spoke, including newly appointed Prosecuting Attorney Jan Bennetts, Deputy Prosecutor Jean Fisher, FACES Executive Director Rebecca Lovelace, Case, and Bower himself. “Greg’s vision more than a decade ago was to create a place where vulnerable victims of child abuse, domestic violence and adult sexual assault find the services to begin their healing under one roof,” Case said. “Greg’s tireless efforts led to the collaboration that today is this building, and more importantly, the people who have served, and continue to serve, thousands of victims throughout the year.” The center, at 417 S. Sixth St., Boise, may be reached at 577-4400.

Toy gun leads to security holds at Middleton schools

A second-grade student reported seeing another student carrying what he thought was a handgun on the bus ride to school Tuesday morning, but the item turned out to be a toy. The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office recognized the Middleton student, whose name is being withheld, for immediately alerting teachers about the possible handgun as soon as he arrived at the school. The teachers in turn alerted the sheriff’s office, who made the decision to put two area schools on security holds. A short time later, officers located a toy gun inside Middleton Heights Elementary School, which was later determined to be the same gun that the student reported seeing on the bus. “These types of situations require an immediate and overwhelming law enforcement response,” Sheriff Kieran Donahue said. “We had 18 officers out at the schools (Tuesday) morning searching for the potential handgun. Thankfully, it turned out to be a toy, but that just shows the urgency with which we handle these matters.” The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office reminded students and parents that even bringing a toy gun to school can have serious ramifications. The student was suspended for up to two days.

Frustration builds as students, teachers wait for termination hearing

E

agle High School students are wearing bracelets in support of suspended teacher Clay Hatfield as they wait for the termination hearing that will decide whether he can keep his job. Parent Joe Ryan ordered 200 bracelets that say “#SUPPORTHATTY” and “W.W.H.D.” — What would Hatfield do? They are being distributed this week. “We’re a little frustrated with the by Holly Beech length of time that this whole process is hbeech@mymeridianpress.com taking,” Eagle High School parent Gretchen Anderson said. © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Hatfield’s termination hearing before West Ada School District trustees was supposed to take place Nov. 5, but it was canceled to give Hatfield’s attorney with the Idaho Education Association more time to prepare. It hasn’t been rescheduled yet. “We are waiting on Mr. Hatfield,” district spokesman Eric Exline said. Hatfield declined to comment. Hatfield was suspended Oct. 20 and has not returned to the classroom since that time. He teaches Spanish, Native American history and freshmen Cornerstone classes. He’s worked in the district for 13 years — 11 of those years as a teacher at Eagle High. Neither the district nor the IEA are releasing details about why From westada.org Hatfield was put on leave. Anderson said parents complained on Clay Hatfield, a suspended teacher who faces a termination hearing, has taught at Eagle High School for 11 years. three occasions, and this is Hatfield’s second suspension. His first suspension, she said, came after he used two swear words in class and gave details about the worst dress code violations that he had seen. The third incident, Anderson said, took place when Hatfield tossed a book at a student to be put on a shelf, but the student didn’t catch the book and it hit him in the head. None of these details could be confirmed by the district. The district will present its reasons for the suspension at the hearing, Exline said, and Hatfield, along with legal counsel from the IEA, can present his side. Hatfield’s group of supporters on Facebook continues to grow. The fans on the page “We SUPPORT Hatfield” now number about 2,025, and a petition for the district to rescind Hatfield’s suspension has been signed by more than 1,650. “Given what I have been told and what seems to have occurred, my personal feeling is that the punishment just doesn’t seem to fit the crime,” Ryan said. “And I don’t JOE RYAN, Eagle High School parent know how widespread the complaints were. LOCAL NEWS Fatal car vs. bike crash on Meridian Road under investigation

D

eputies are still investigating what led to a fatal collision between a bicyclist and a Ford Taurus on Meridian Road Friday afternoon, Ada County Sheriff’s Office posted on its blog Monday. Ada County coroner’s officials pronounced 47-year-old cyclist Kurt Krieger dead at the scene of by Meridian Press staff news@mymeridianpress.com the crash. The 42-year-old woman driving the Taurus was not injured. The crash occurred around 4:48 p.m. Friday. The woman was driving the Taurus north on Meridian Road when the car collided with Krieger, who was trying to cross Meridian Road on a bike at the Lake Hazel Road intersection. The force of the impact knocked Krieger off his bike. He was not wearing a helmet. Meridian Road does not have a stop sign or traffic light

at that intersection. It appears Krieger tried to cross Meridian Road from the east side of the intersection going west and got into the second of the five lanes when he was hit, according to the blog. When deputies and paramedics arrived moments later, two off-duty nurses were giving Krieger CPR at the scene.

Paramedics continued treatment before the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner’s officials list the cause of death as blunt force trauma. Deputies interviewed the 42-year-old female driver, and her 2005 Taurus is being examined for evidence. No charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

for amazing winter decorations. I think we can all agree there are truly needy people living in Meridian, but they are NOT those holding signs at the shopping centers and on street corners. If you are going to give a hand-up to someone you think may be in need, then at least take the time to find out if they are truly in need and not some scam artist feeding on the guilt of those too busy to get involved. Let’s make sure we offer real, long term, lasting change. Not just a ‘quick fix’ to what might not even be a real problem. Our community has churches, community groups and a food bank that are all more than willing to offer real help to those who desire real change. Let’s use wisdom with our charity. Faith-based addiction treatment center opens in Meridian

enaissance Ranch Addiction Treatment Center, part of a network of centers in Utah, Idaho and Arizona, opened in Meridian last month. The center uses a 12-step approach grounded in the faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The out-patient proby Holly Beech gram allows clients to hbeech@mymeridianpress.com get treatment while con© 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS tinuing to work at their jobs and live at home. “They can work during the day, come to treatment in the evenings,” said Jason Coombs, the center’s executive director. There are individual and group therapy sessions available to clients and their loved ones. “The biggest benefit is we have a family program,” Coombs said. “They come on Monday nights, and they have a group separate than the client, so they’re completely in a space that they can express resentments and frustration and confusion.” The center plans to start an education group as another resource to the public. “I want to just open up our facility for employers, family members, friends to come and just be educated

about addiction and ... resources,” Coombs said. CONNECT Renaissance Ranch is Renaissance Ranch Addican affiliate of the Utahbased Renaissance Recov- tion Treatment Center n 1125 E. Pine Ave., Meridian ery, which this year earned n 286-4274 Utah’s “Best of State” in providing mental health n idahoaddictioncenters.com services. Other Idaho afRibbon-cutting ceremony filiates are located in Pon 11 a.m. Dec. 17 catello and Idaho Falls. “From our standpoint, we try to be wherever the LDS community is strong, and it’s strong in Meridian,” Coombs said. In religious communities, he said, there is an undertow of addiction, and people want a treatment approach that incorporates faith. “They were trying to find a treatment provider that was religious friendly, and not to tear down existing beliefs, but to help build upon them,” he said. The facility doesn’t proselytize clients, Coombs said, and clients aren’t required to attend any type of religious service. The Meridian facility opened in November at 1125 E. Pine Ave.

eridian City Council approved a $55,400 budget amendment Tuesday to fund art along the new Meridian Road Interchange barrier rail. The interchange rebuild will be complete late next year. Council members agreed last week to a design that would cost $55,000 or less. “Where’d the $400 come in at? It was $55,000 last week,” Councilman Keith Bird asked Robert Simison, the mayor’s chief of staff by Holly Beech who presented the inforhbeech@mymeridianpress.com mation to the council. Simison clarified that © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS $54,400 was the needed amount shown in his presentation last week, and the council unanimously approved the amendment without further question. Approving a budget amendment allows the city to spend money on a project that wasn’t approved when the annual budget was created. The design of the interchange art is still being refined, but the look that the city is leaning toward has birds, a sun and a cloud and wispy, wind-like patterns, all colored gold. The art will be along the stainlesssteel fence barriers that line each side of the bridge. Meridian set aside $486,140 in this year’s budget for landscaping at the Meridian Road Interchange, in cooperation with the Idaho Transportation Department. The landscaping includes four planted triangles and trees on the slopes and along the interstate.

a community service award for its efforts to rescue children from locked vehicles. Meridian Lock and Key immediately sends a locksmith technician to rescue people in need when the situation involves children, disabled individuals or welfare checks, Meridian Police Sgt. John Gonzales said. “Their quick response has helped us, the Meridian Police Department, not have to damage property while still being able to rescue children or other individuals in locked-in situations,” he said.

GRANT SPENDING APPROVALS

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Meridian gave departments authority to spend grants that they have received. n The economic development department will use a $5,000 grant from Idaho Power to create a business recruitment and talent attraction marketing video. n The police department will use a grant of up to $22,000 from the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety to continue offering the Alive at 25 program. The driving safety course targets drivers between the ages of 16 and 24. Meridian began offering the course in December of 2011. The grant will reimburse salaries of officers who teach the 4.5-hour course. n The police department will use a grant of up to $51,000 from the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety to fund overtime and incenCITY RECOGNIZES LOCAL BUSINESS tives equipment for efforts dealing with issues like imAt Tuesday’s City Council meeting, the Merid- paired driving, seatbelt enforcement and aggressive ian Police Department gave Meridian Lock and Key driving enforcement.
