Getting ready for a trip? Here’s some advice I connect hbeech@mymeridianpress.com

’m learning a few things about overseas travel as I prepare for my upcoming trip to South Africa. I wish I would have done some things differently to shave stress off the process. Maybe you’re planning an exciting trip or hope to in the future. If so, here are some tips to help you prepare: 1. Check out the visa/permit requirements early. In my situation, requirements for a visitor’s visa included a chest X-ray for tuberculosis, an overall medical exam and a background check. I wish I would have started this process sooner! I got a good scare while getting my fingerprints done at the Idaho State Police office. The official told me it could take three to four weeks to get my results back — and this was only six weeks before my flight. I would still need to mail the results to the South African Consulate General in Los Angeles and wait for them to approve my visa, stamp my passport and send it back to me. Thankfully, the background check results came back in only six business days! I was so relieved I just may have danced around my apartment. 2. Mail your passport securely. Do I really need to put my passport in the mail? This requirement made me nervous. Like I mentioned earlier, to get a visa I had to send my passport (and several forms to the consulate in Los Angeles. I didn’t want to just stick this valuable document in a manila envelope and ship it off. Seasoned-travelers in my family gave me advice: mail the documents through UPS or FedEx and require a signature upon delivery.

Meridian Police: Wilder man had explosive device in vehicle

Meridian Police Department Log Dec. 3-9

Police made the following arrests or issued charges: 2 domestic batteries 3 resisting and obstructing law enforcement 11 warrants 1 armed robbery 1 fugitive to Idaho 1 theft by possession 1 unlawful possession of a firearm 3 driving without privileges 2 driving without insurance 3 driving under the influence 6 possession of drug paraphernalia 3 possession of a controlled substance 1 open alcohol container 2 commercial burglaries 2 false information to law enforcement 1 possession of a destructive device 1 concealed weapon violation 3 juvenile grand theft

Include a self-addressed envelope so that when the consulate ships your passport back, you also need to sign for it. You’ll prepay for this service when you send the package. 3. Check out apps that will help you communicate with loved ones back home. I don’t like to think about this part. Six months is a long time to be away from loved ones. I won’t be able to use my regular cellphone plan, so thankfully there are some great apps and programs to help us stay in touch. There’s the classic Skype and email, by Holly Beech but I recently learned about “WhatsApp,” hbeech@mymeridianpress.com a smartphone app that will allow me to © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS text and send photos to friends and family in the U.S. 4. Ask an experienced traveler what customs will be like. Before I went to Cuba, our group leader told us what to expect and how to act at customs when we got off the plane. The process went really smoothly for us, and I’m glad we were on the same page and knew what to expect before walking into an unfamiliar situation. If you’re planning a trip, I hope this helps and that you have an amazing time! If you’ve picked up helpful travel hints along the way, please pass them along. I’d love to hear them and share with readers.

Kendall After he was pulled over, officers found Hanaman Hanaman had been driving with a suspended license. He was placed under arrest when officers discovered drug paraphernalia on his person. Basterrechea said officers then proceeded to search the vehicle, when Hanaman indicated he had some kind of device in his car. Officers then found a carbon dioxide tank filled with gunpowder and fitted with a fuse. At this time, police are not releasing details about what Hanaman was planning to do with the explosives. The gas station that Hanaman had pulled into was shut down while a bomb squad responded to the scene. Hanaman was booked into Ada County Jail on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without privileges and unlawful possession of destructive devices or bombs. n

Idaho’s unemployment insurance tax rates will drop 16.8 percent in 2015 as the economic recovery and job growth continue to ease the pressure on the state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, the Idaho Department of Labor announced. The rate reduction is the third straight since rates were at their legal maximum in 2012 to restore the trust fund after it went broke in 2009 and 2010 during the Great Recession. Employers overall will cut their unemployment insurance tax expenses by tens of millions of dollars from 2014. Individual employer rates depend on the employer’s experience with unemployment insurance claims over the past year and how that compares to all other Idaho employers.

ON THE TOWN ON New boutique plans Prom THE Extravaganza with local youth SIDE

P

aige’s Boutique recently opened its doors in Meridian, and the owners of the dress and tuxedo shop are already working with local youth to plan Prom Extravaganza. Owners Scott and Roma Newton owned a gift shop and prom dress store in North Dakota before moving to Star this summer. In North Dakota, they collaborated with high school students to put on fashion shows, allowing students to model the latest prom attire and work with industry professionals. Businesses jumped on board to sponsor booths and dresses. Model agencies from California came to scout for potential models, Roma Newton said. “It’s a really huge event that we put on,” she said. “We’re actually anticipating over 1,000 at the event next year.” Idaho’s first Prom Extravaganza will be March 14 at a to-be-determined location. Paige’s Boutique is partnering with the Meridian Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council to put on WHERE: the event. 450 South Meridian Road, Suite 75 Proceeds will benefit CATCH, or Charitable Assistance To Community’s Homeless, a local nonprofit that helps people in need find and CONTACT: afford housing. 887-4850 Roma is still accepting applications from businesses who would like to sponsor Prom Extravaganza or run a booth at the event. SCHOOLS

Students get hands-on programming education through Hour of Code event T

he students at Eagle Hills Elementary are learning computer science can be fun as well as educational by learning the basics of programming in a worldwide event meant to give kids an introduction to coding. Using computers and iPads, students put together simple lines of code to try to solve simple puzzles, create drawings and more. Hour of Code is an ongoing project to provide simple coding exercises to help kids with computer skills and math skills. It also shows students how to work together to solve problems. The code is broken into simple drag and drop blocks that students can put together to solve simple puzzles — by Zachary Chastaine such as helping a bee get to pollen — or to zchastaine@idahopress.com complete simple tasks such as completing a © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS drawing. Jocelyn Michalak’s second-grade class broke into different groups. Some were busy reading, others were busy writing about their weekend. Still others were at computers trying their hands at code. The second-graders had to be taught how to access the programs before they could start, but Michalak said they were learning quickly. Students who were already familiar with using a computer were able to jump right into the lessons, Michalak said. Students help other students through lessons, and during the Hour of Code, they were buzzing around classrooms to offer suggestions and try different things with the code blocks. While some classes were broken into different stations with just one group doing code exercises, others, like Hannah Henry’s computer lab class, got their whole class to work on code. Henry helped students sign in to the computers and work through troubleshooting. “One of the exercises that they do is like Angry Birds, and they’re trying to get the bird to the pig just like they do in the game but they’re using code programs to do it,” Henry said. “So dragging blocks that say ‘move forward, turn right 90 degrees, turn left 90 degrees’ and they put those in the order that they need to get the bird to the pig.” Henry said there is also a program recently released that features characters from the Disney movie, Frozen. Students are not anchored to the classroom. The Hour of Code can also be done at home, which Michalak said was a popular option with students. “I’ve had lots of kids go on at home,” Michalak said. “Some kids have gone through quite a few lessons.” Fourth-grade teacher Brian Fischer said the school started participating in the Hour of Code event last year but only in a few classrooms. The program was a success, and teachers decided to expand their Hour of Code participation this year. Some classes got to begin their work in the program before the Hour of Code event. Second-grader Lainey Dougal, 8, said she started last week and had already gone through several code lessons. “This is my second time,” Dougal said. “I went really fast last time. I went through like three levels.”

SCHOOLS Students learn to juggle finances at Mad City Money

H

igh school juniors and seniors got a taste of real-life budgeting at the Mad City Money event in Meridian on Monday, presented by CapEd Credit Union. “It’s shocking, the whole thing,” Renaissance High School junior Sophia Gallardo said. “You don’t think about debt, you don’t think about student loans, and it just adds up so quickly.” Students were assigned careers, monthly salaries, credit card debt, student loans and a family life. Working in pairs, they created a budget and made spending decisions on things like food, housing, transportation and entertainment. by Holly Beech “It’s real life before hbeech@mymeridianpress.com we get there,” CapEd © 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS Credit Union Business Development Specialist Lisa Hamilton said. “So I’m hoping that they take that to heart and realize that budgeting is very important.” For the past several years, the Meridian Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council has invited CapEd to facilitate Mad City Money — a national program created by the Credit Union National Association — for local teens. This year, the event moved from Meridian City Hall to the more spacious Forward Movement Training center in Meridian. Albertson Foundation gives $1M for Boys & Girls Club expansion

T

he Boys and Girls Club of Ada County Capital Campaign received a big boost with the help of a $1 million donation from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation. The money will be used to contribute to projects at the Meridian Boys and Girls Club including the construction of a new gymnasium and teen center. Executive Director Colleen Braga said the current Meridian Boys and Girls Club facility located at 911 N. Meridian Road serves an average of 225 kids daily by Zachary Chastaine during the school year and zchastaine@idahopress.com 280 per day during the sum© 2014 MERIDIAN PRESS mer. Braga said one major goal with the capital campaign was to create more space to help eliminate the club’s waiting list, which stands at about 100 during the summer for just the Meridian location. “This will immediately allow for at least 100 more kids a day, easily,” Braga said. “It will rival in size our Garden City club.” The donation — which Braga said is the largest the club has received — will not only allow the Boys and Girls Club to accomplish its expansion goals but to create a state-of-the-art space that will accomplish academic goals as well. The aim is not only to help the Meridian club, but

to be a model for other clubs. President Jamie MacMillan said the foundation wanted the new facility to be attractive. “We want this gift to help the Meridian Boys and Girls become a world-class facility that kids and the staff deserve, and one they can’t wait to get to,” MacMillan said. Part of being state of the art will mean including academic programs with a focus on technology and science. Computer labs, robotics, rocket construction and smart boards will be included at the facility. Braga said the donation has enabled the club to think far beyond its original plans, which in some cases just meant moving furniture to new areas and purchasing a few new items for the club. The club wants to focus heavily on the environment it creates because the facility is an important factor to attract and retain teens, Braga said. “It allows us to really dream bigger on our plans,” she said. “We want it to be state of the art. Before this it was ‘lets get some space,’ this allows us to bring in some experts and really come up with the coolest place for teens.” Groundbreaking is expected to take place in March. Until then, Boys and Girls Club staff are visiting other clubs and exploring options for the new facility. Braga said they are planning carefully to ensure services to kids are not shut down in the process.

IN YOUR WORDS Responses to the Meridian Winter Lights Parade, which took place Dec. 5: Elby Jones: “Great parade! Wonderful weather to enjoy it in. Thanks for all free hot chocolate, cookies, muffins, and coffee. I am hoping Santa will ride the entire route next year, based upon all the comments on other social media sites. Tyce Irish: “What a great parade!! Thanks, Meridian, we live in a nice spot.” Sandra Laney: “It was wonderful. Looks like everyone had a great time. Just foggy enough to create a misty effect. Free hot chocolate was great. Just nice all around. P.S. I had thought they had stopped throwing candy from the floats and handing out the candy along the route. Got there at 5:15, set up our chairs and got real comfy and had a great viewing site until they started throwing out candy and then we couldn’t see much after that. Kids were flocking around and in front of us and into the street to get the candy. Didn’t see too many of those who were interested in the actual light parade, just in seeing how much candy they could scoop up. Nevertheless it was a great evening. Thanks Meridian for hosting again.” Cindy Tastad-Wheeler: “I guess we need to sit closer to the start next time. Kids were so sad Santa wasn’t in the sleigh by the time it got to the Jackson store on Main. A bit disappointed myself. Great photos though.” Bill Schuster: “I did not know this was going on, or I would have gone. They need to advertise it more.”  Join the conversation at facebook.com/meridianpress
