his last week was an interesting one for me. Anyone who has read the article on page three already knows the back story, but to anyone not quite there yet, one of the coffee shops I frequent had a fun pop-culture connection. Village Coffee has been in business since I started working at the Meridian Press and its location, access to Wi-Fi and stiff brews make it one of the places I like to settle down at to work when I’m around town. I had seen the Chuck Norris poster behind the counter before, and I thought absolutely nothing of it. Obviously Jakki Wright and her daughters are down with the kids, I thought. But after noticing a tweet from a friend that told me there was more to it, I soon discovered that the whole Wright family has a rich martial arts history and their new business at The Village at Meridian was just one of the most recent chapters in their story. Despite how many stories I write on a regular basis, I don’t actually find things like the surprisingly awesome story behind the people at Village Coffee often. I hope people enjoy reading those stories be-

And I decided that was a good idea. Like the first, they were short and quick and each one was easier than the last. The most recent run just last weekend was actually really fun. I finally got some sun in my face and truth be told I’m starting to enjoy it. Not quite as much as the students at Ponderosa Elementary School, though. I was impressed after a visit the other day where I learned how many miles many of the students were walking during their breaks. I have to admit I was impressed. And they’re not the only ones: Lots of kids around the district are making some great progress in walking challenges and other healthy activities.

City seeks scholarship applicants Each year, the city of Meridian awards up to four $1,000 scholarships funded by sponsors and attendees of the Mayor’s State of the City address. The scholarships are for Meridian area high school students and help families afford a college education. Eligible applicants must graduate from high school this spring and plan to attend an accredited college or vocational education program in the fall of 2016. In addition, an applicant must reside in the city of Meridian or its area of impact, or have been a member of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council since January 2014. The city of Meridian scholarships are awarded to successful applicants who demonstrate evidence of leadership potential through their community involvement, as well as volunteerism, school activities or work experience. This year, applicants who have completed an Alive at 25 safe driving course and include their course completion certificate with their application material will be given additional consideration. Information about the Alive at 25 course, which is regularly offered through the Meridian Police Department, can be found online at aliveat25.us. Scholarship application forms can be accessed from the city of Meridian website at meridiancity.org. Copies are also available in the counseling offices of area high schools and in the Mayor’s Office at Meridian City Hall. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. April 3. Holtzclaw wins Mt. Everest Challenge



Rep. James Holtzclaw, R-Meridian, was one of the winners of the Mt. Everest Challenge sponsored by Blue Cross of Idaho. Holtzclaw won a surprise award for promoting health and spreading awareness on childhood obesity while rallying other lawmakers to get involved with the program. Holtzclaw was given the Heart of An Everest Guide award and received $1,000 which he intends to donate to Prospect Elementary School in Meridian. The Mt. Everest Challenge was intended to get lawmakers virtually climbing the 29,000 feet to the summit of Mount Everest by wearing a pedometer and tracking healthy eating decisions as well as other healthy habits to gain bonus “feet” up the mountain.

Meridian girl wins Merit Award



Lions International announced March 13 that Emily Hunter, from Meridian, was one of the top 25 finishers in the Annual International Peace Poster contest. Hunter received a Merit Award for her poster and finished first out of more than 100 entries from Idaho that were entered into the contest. Some entries included submissions from Japan and Australia, as well as countries in Europe and Africa. Hunter was sponsored by the Meridian Lions Club’s Ron Gagadone, chairman of the Peace Poster Contest.

BOISE — Traffic on Meridian Road south of Interstate 84 will be shifted further to the west side near the eastbound ramps March 12. Lanes were restricted from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. March 19 while crews worked to establish the new traffic pattern. The actual shift will last for several months while crews widen and rebuild the east side of the interchange. Jayme Coonce, Idaho Transportation Project District 3 project engineer, said shifting traffic further to the west on Meridian Road will eliminate the curve on the south side of the Meridian Interchange. “ITD anticipates this will allow for a straighter, smoother flow of traffic between the I-84 bridge and Overland Road.” Construction on the east side of Meridian Road is expected to be complete this summer. ITD is rebuilding Meridian Road between Central Drive and Overland Road as part of the I-84, Meridian Interchange Project, which will be finished late this year.

A call for members has gone out from Elaine Hess from the Native Daughters of Idaho, inviting native born Idahoan women to join the group and to help record the history of women in Idaho as well as help preserve Idaho monuments and buildings. The Native Daughters of Idaho meet every third Tuesday of the month at noon from September to May at the Faith Lutheran Church at 2915 S. Montana Avenue in Caldwell. Previous programs from the group have included trips to the Original Fort Boise, a fashion show of pioneer clothing and more. Guests are welcome to attend and come learn from the group. This year there will be a picnic in June and membership is $5 a year. For information, contact Elaine Hess at 459-1076.

Meridian family runs coffee, karate businesses

And if you happen to spot a man who looks like Chuck Norris while sipping your drink, it may very well be the man himself — or at least his national champion stunt double Chip Wright. The family also has connections to the TV show “Walker, Texas Ranger.” Jakki Wright, owner of Village Coffee, runs the shop along with nine employees including her daughter, Angie Ramos-Hoxie. Jakki Wright ran a drive-thru coffee business before in Medford, Oregon, and brings the kind of product she said the people coming to The Village expect. Their air roasted coffee brings people from neighboring towns in for a cup, and their drinks are made with Ghirardelli chocolate. Chip Wright works at the family’s other business still in Medford. Many people tell Chip Wright he looks just like Chuck Norris — and they’re not far off. Although he is humble and often responds with a simple acknowledgment, Chip Wright worked as Chuck Norris stunt double with a specialization in martial arts. Chip Wright helps with Village Coffee running beans to the business periodically. The shop opened Oct. 20 and is already starting to expand with the addition of an iced coffee machine just in time for summer. Casey Snider and her mother drive from their home in Eagle just for Village Coffee’s drinks despite all the other coffee locations available closer to home. “I even ordered their beans for home,” Snider said. Snider said she loves the coffee and she and her mom come anytime they have time to stop by. Other groups who have begun using Village Coffee include gaming groups and a group of seniors who come to watch the fountain shows clearly visible near the building.

THE CHUCK NORRIS CONNECTION With Chip Wright’s extensive karate experience, he became an asset as a martial arts stunt double for Norris and his film credit includes 83 episodes of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” as well as the feature films “Top Dog” and “Walking Tall 2.” “A majority of the work I did was really on the ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ show,” Chip Wright said. “We did some movies together as well, but the majority was ‘Walker, Texas Ranger.’” The Wrights also own a karate school — Chip Wright’s Champion Karate — to this day, where Chip Wright teaches classes. “We’ve been in the same location for 40 years this year,” Chip Wright said. “We have classes five days a week and when I’m here I’m pretty much down here every day.” Chip Wright joked that he sometimes feels like he is doing something illegal driving the large amount of coffee in the back of his car from Medford to Meridian. He said the distance between the family is difficult but they handle it well. Chip Wright said he began studying martial arts after Jakki, who was still in high school at the time, recommended it. “I read about Chuck Norris in the martial arts magazines and this guy who moved here was one of Chuck Norris’s black belts and I had actually read about him,” Chip Wright said. He got his black belt from Chuck Norris and since then has continued to train, coach and compete. Chip Wright competed at the national level with the Trans-World Oil Karate Team. Many competitors were from the East Coast, but he was named Open National Champion three times as well as National Champion of the United Fighting Arts Federation 14 times. “One time Chuck asked him not to fight because they were flying back to Dallas the next day for filming and he didn’t want anything to happen to him,” Jakki Wright said. Jakki said Chip would often come home with stories about the day’s work such as kicking a man from a boat while on a zipline. “It was awesome; it was a great experience,” Chip Wright said.

Voters approve $96M school bond

est Ada School District voters approved the $96 million bond requested by the school district with 17,289 voters turning out for the election. There were 12,355 voters in favor of the bond — or 71 percent — and 4,890 — or 28 percent — against it. Lake Hazel, like many West Ada schools, use temporary classrooms to keep up with capacity needs. Exline said in January that the portable classrooms can become costly over time and are more of a Band-Aid than an actual solution. “It’s a big deal for schools like Lake Hazel that are 50 percent over capacity,” Exline said. “We have schools we need to help out.”

Boise Bombers quadriplegic rugby team hosts tournament

he Boise Bombers quadriplegic rugby team hosted the 2015 Pacific Sectionals Quad Rugby Tournament the weekend of March 6 -8 at Meridian Homecourt YMCA. The seven-team tournament consisted of teams from northern California, Seattle, Portland, San Diego as well as others. Josiah Sullivan co-captain for the Boise Bombers was helping track penalties on March 6. “The top for teams in this tournament go over to nationals in Alabama,” Sullivan said. Sullivan said the sport formerly known as Murderball and popularized by the movie of the same name is played like rugby, but Sullivan said the rules are more like basketball. The players use specialized wheelchairs that are rugged and can take a lot of punishment from players

I think they don’t expect that from people in wheelchairs, so it’s kind of nice to break the stereotype,” Sullivan said. Sullivan said the players work their upper bodies a lot to move their chairs as fast as they do, and all the players on the teams have suffered some type of spinal

injury or have an illness that renders them unable to use their legs. “Lots of people out here in different circumstances,” Sullivan said. Ambrose School begins expansion T

he Ambrose School announced Feb. 27 that it will expand its school on Locust Grove. The expansion was celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony. The expansion will include three additional classrooms and new tutorial rooms, as well as help the school reach its maximum student population of 550. Currently the school has 512 students. This is only the middle phase of expansion. The Ambrose School hopes to add another expansion in the future which would include a multipurpose room for presentations and sports. However, despite plans to expand the building, the school’s student body won’t get any bigger.
