veryone celebrates Memorial Day in their own way. Some participate in the Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride, some have a barbecue and some attend a Memorial Day service of some kind. In some communities, I have heard people lament the loss of a parade or declined participation in events. But I say you don’t need any of those things for Memorial Day. None of that decorum and procedure really matter, although they can be nice. And I’m not saying don’t go to a Memorial Day celebration of some kind, I’m just saying if we never had a formal ceremony we would still be able to pay tribute. What really matters is taking the time to pay respects in whatever form that may take. Once, when I was a Cub Scout, I went with my troop to a military cemetery to put little American flags on the headstones for Memorial Day. At the time, my family was living in the Bay Area and the cemetery, Golden Gate National Cemetery, was enormous. It took our troop along with several other troops hours to plant the flags. I remember how daunting it felt when one of our troop leaders told us this was actually a small cemetery compared to others in the country. I remember feeling like maybe our troop leader was having a laugh at

our expense since the cemetery we were in was already enormous. The flags were kept in big wooden crates and some Scouts had the job of just getting the little flags back on their sticks so we could plant them. by Zachary Chastaine Even as a kid, the endless rows of zchastaine@idahopress.com white headstones drove home the enor- © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS mous number of troops we have had in our various conflicts over the years. We talk about the sacrifice our veterans make for our country, but a military cemetery really quantifies that effort and puts into perspective just how many have served. This year I wanted to visit my great-grandfather’s headstone at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Although it’s a place where we go to bury our loved ones, it’s a quiet, well kept and respectful place to memorialize the people we have lost. I visited before there were any Cub Scouts planting flags for Memorial Day, and it all looked plain except for some flowers and things that had been left by visitors. I like to pay my respects like that — on my own time.

Republic Services goes green Company invests in green future

W

hile the trucks used by Republic Services might be painted blue, the company has been working to go green over the last few years. Now, the company that provides waste removal service to Meridian residents and by Zachary Chastaine businesses has zchastaine@idahopress.com a fleet of trucks © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS outfitted to help keep the environment clean as well as get rid of all the city’s garbage. Republic Services has invested $23 million since 2009 to start replacing its fleet of diesel trucks, to the more environmentally friendly compressed natural gas — or CNG — trucks going into service. Rachele Klein, the business development manager for Republic Services in the Treasure Valley, said the plan was to have all trucks in the Republic Services fleet running on compressed natural gas. The gas is the same kind that is used to heat homes and operate gas stoves. But using it to power trucks can be complicated. Fleet manager Billy Cecil said the trucks have their own specialized engines that are engineered to work with compressed natural gas fuel. He said earlier models of truck that were modified to convert from diesel to the natural gas were unreliable. But the trucks Republic Services uses are all equipped with specialized engines. The most obvious change is that the newer trucks are quieter than their diesel-powered counterparts. The loudest part on them is an air compressor which can’t even be heard on the diesel trucks due to the noise produced by the engine. Klein said this is better for customers since the trucks can be operated without disturbing people by interrupting conversations or other activities. Cecil said the real benefit to the engines is that they produce low emissions and use domestic fuel. The main goal for Republic Services with these changes is to have a fleet of trucks that is better for the environment. With the eighth largest vocational fleet in the country, Republic Services has a large infrastructure to is has to modify before it can replace its diesel fleet with the newer, cleaner trucks. Although each truck costs $305,000 each, Cecil said the company also had to invest funds into the facilities needed to operate the trucks. Cecil said this means modifying the mechanical bays the trucks are serviced in to accommodate the new engines and even modifying the entire yard so the trucks can fuel up. Crews had to be trained on how to

work on the trucks and how to operate the new systems, which also cost money. But there are some benefits for crews. Cecil said mechanics enjoy working on them because they are significantly cleaner than a diesel truck. Klein said 11 out of 14 CNG certified inspectors in the state of Idaho were Republic Services employees. These inspectors are tasked with inspecting CNG fuel tanks and systems. Historically, the trucks, which are based just outside Meridian at the Republic Services station on 11101 W. Executive Drive in Boise, would line up all the way to the road outside the station waiting to fuel up at the station’s diesel pump. Now the trucks can pull into their designated parking spot, which has a CNG hose waiting. All the trucks are able to refuel at the same time thanks to a single CNG line that services the entire fleet. Cecil said the trucks are hooked up to the fuel line after drivers have completed their shift at the end of the day and the trucks refill gradually overnight. Then, when the trucks are ready to be put into use in the morning, they are already fueled up. Not all the trucks arrive at the same time after returning to the station. When there are fewer trucks on the line the trucks will refuel overnight in just eight hours, but if all the trucks are hooked up to the pump it can take 10. The station that services Meridian has 151 trucks that call it home, and 85 of those trucks are CNG powered. However, while this refuel time may seem long, it’s designed to work that way in what is known as a timefill. Since all the trucks can refuel at the same time on their own pump, the gas is shared between all the trucks. It is still possible for a fast refill for a CNG car or truck or even a Valley Regional Transit bus by use of the faster pump which Republic Services has open to the public. The public pump operates exactly like a gasoline pump at any normal gas station. A car pulls up and the driver inserts the nozzle into their vehicle. The prices for CNG are similar to normal gasoline, and the measurement for tank size is different, but otherwise the two fuel types work just the same at the pump. One dump truck can service nearly 370 households during the warmer seasons and up to 800 households during the winter. A full load can weigh up to 10 tons, and with 15 trucks servicing Meridian, the numbers start to add up for the work the Republic Service trucks are doing. For the eighth largest vocational fleet in America and the only waste disposal service in Meridian, the future, officials said, is compressed natural gas.

Joki said in the Meridian Press candidate questionnaire that student achievement, parent involvement, district growth, teacher support and employee support would be his main goals if voted into zone 5. “I believe I can make positive contributions to our district,” he stated. “I have the time and training and unwavering dedication to public education. As your trustee, I would always listen to parents, students, district professional and community leaders before making policy decisions. I would be a “team player” with other board members to fulfill our district mission “Preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s challenges” and our vision of empowering all staff to help our students reach their potential.”

Meridian Library District trustees selected

T

wo candidates, Dustin Barrett and Howard Little, were voted in to fill open seats in the Meridian Library Board of Trustees election on Tuesday. The race for the library board was close with Barrett at 613 votes, Little at 592 votes and third candidate Kevin Pfleger with 553 votes. Unlike other districts such as the school district, the library board does not have zones and the two candidates with the most votes will each serve six-year terms on the board. Library director Gretchen Caserotti said the posts are volunteer positions that demand a lot from candidates. “Library districts have six-year terms for an unpaid position. It’s a volunteer position. It’s really a commitment. We’re fortunate to have people with these great experiences,” Caserotti said. Caserotti said all three candidates had good experience for the posts. Little has served on the board in the past, and Barrett has experience as a principal at Meridian Academy. “We had three great candidates. We are so fortunate to have such supportive bright caring people who want to serve in this capacity,” Caserotti said. “In a way we couldn’t lose.”

No more names on that wall, ever. That’s what we’d like to see.” CRAIG KINGSBURY Nampa Police Chief

Photos by Adam Eschbach/MP

Left: Meridian Police Officers Greg Kortan, left, and Myron Severson, with the Meridian Police Honor Guard, walk out the Idaho Peace Officers Memorial wreath during the 17th annual Idaho Peace Officers’ Ceremony May 14 at the Idaho State Police headquarters in Meridian. Right: Carrie Kralicek speaks after her husband and keynote speaker, retired Coeur d’Alene Officer Mike Kralicek, who was nearly killed in the line of duty in December 2004.

Idaho remembers fallen police officers T

he memorial wall outside the Idaho State Police headquarters in Meridian names of every police officer in the state who has fallen in the line of duty. Next year, one more name — the first in several years — will be added to the list: Sgt. Greg Moore of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department. The memories of Moore’s death, less than two weeks prior, still lingered in the minds of every officer who atby John Funk tended the annual ceremony on a jfunk@idahopress.com chilly, cloudy May 14 morning. © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS Held every year during National Police Week, the event is always emotional, Nampa Police Chief Craig Kingsbury said after the ceremony drew to a close. But this year, it was particularly somber. Many of the officers in attendance wore black ribbons over their badges in remembrance of Moore. Kingsbury has never lost an officer under his command in the line of duty, he said, but he can imagine Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White’s pain. “That’s my worst nightmare,” Kingsbury said. “Because the officers that I work with, they’re family to me.” Nampa Police Officer Clint Wilber never met Moore, he said after the ceremony, but that doesn’t keep him from feeling a real, personal sense of loss. Idaho’s law enforcement community is relatively small and tight-knit, so even if two officers in different parts of the state have never met, chances are good that they share a mutual acquaintance. “It’s hard. When I’m standing back here in formation and they start reading off the names, I have to tell myself

to keep it together at that point,” Wilber said. “It strikes home. All of those men and women were doing the exact same things that we do every single day. You never know when your time comes, and we’re ready, and we’re thankful for the support that we get.” It’s not the first time the Coeur d’Alene Police Department has faced that kind of nightmare. On Dec. 28, 2004, Officer Mike Kralicek was shot in the face with a .357 Magnum and spent several weeks in a coma. He was permanently disabled when he woke up, but he did wake up. Kralicek was greeted with a standing ovation when he delivered the keynote speech at Thursday morning’s ceremony. “I spent the last 10 years learning to walk, talk and breathe all over again,” Kralicek said. “I died several times, but eventually landed on this side of the fence.” Idaho Peace Officers Memorial Board President Mike Johnson — a former United States Marshal and Boise Airport police chief — said his organization always stands ready to help the families of fallen officers in any way it can. Within two days, Johnson said, they’ll have a tax-free check for $10,000 in the family’s hand to help cover funeral expenses, travel costs for out-of-town relatives or whatever else the family needs to address the grieving process. Last year, 133 officers died in the line of duty nationwide. The “Below 100” initiative aims to lower than number by at least 34 — a goal Kingsbury said hasn’t been accomplished in decades. But even one additional name carved permanently into the granite is one too many. “No more names on that wall, ever,” Kingsbury said. “That’s what we’d like to see.”

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Research continues to tell us about hearing health’s connection with whole-body health. Recent studies show that with increased hearing loss comes increased risk of hospitalization. Compared to people with normal hearing, those with at least a mild hearing loss are more likely to be hospitalized more often. This is no surprise as hearing loss is associated with health issues like diabetes, dementia, and cardiovascular disease.1

West Ada issues $96M in bonds The West Ada School District has issued $96 million in bonds to finance construction of three new schools, as well as an expansion and remodel of Meridian High School, according to a statement by Zions Bank on Monday. The bond sale, which oc-

curred May 14, resulted in the district achieving a true interest cost of 3.20 percent on the bonds over a 19-year period, according to Cameron Arial of Zions Bank Public Finance, which serves as the district’s pricing adviser. As pricing adviser, Zions Bank Public Finance reviewed the underwriter’s interest rates and fees and negotiated on the district’s behalf to ensure that the

results were in line with the market. “The West Ada School District and others around the Gem State are benefiting from a relatively low interest rate environment to finance new projects,” Arial said. “We were pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the district in the bond sale.” Voters approved the $96 million bond in March.

LOCAL NEWS Groundbreaking ceremony held for new teen center

D

ozens of people gathered Wednesday morning at the site of the Meridian Boys and Girls Club’s new gymnasium and teen center located at 911 N. Meridian Road. Executive Director Colleen Braga said the community partners who contributed funds for the project have been generous — what was initially set up as a two-year campaign is nearing completion in just one year. “As many of you know, we’ve been very space impacted for the past eight years, and this gym is really by Zachary Chastaine going to help that situation. zchastaine@idahopress.com No more kids on the waiting © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS list, no more kids in harm’s way at critical times during the year,” Braga said. Tommy Ahlquist, the chief operating officer for Gardner Company, also spoke to the crowd at the groundbreaking about the generosity of the development partners Gardner Company was working with on the Boys and Girls Club expansion. In many cases the partners on the projects are donating up to 100 percent of their time and labor on the project. Ahlquist thanked the companies who have donated to the project as well as the team at Gardner Company for its work on the project. “We can’t wait to see the club open,” Ahlquist said. Mayor Tammy de Weerd said when the original Boys and Girls Club opened in Meridian, it had a waiting list. She said the expansion at that site would be a benefit to the children with up to 40 percent of that club’s members being below the poverty line. “This takes a village,” de Weerd said. “Really it’s the kids who are the benefactors in this thing.” De Weerd recognized city officials and departments who had helped support the project. She said the Meridian City Council was thrilled by the community support for the expansion. “Bottom line I think this has to be most exciting day that I’m honored to be a part of, and it’s all about our kids,” de Weerd said.
