The journey beyond high school I

t’s graduation time in the West Ada School District, and hundreds of seniors are getting their diplomas. Graduating high school is a big step. It’s also the last academic step some students will take since not every high school grad will go on to college for any number of reasons. Graduation is a huge milestone because it’s that point in many young peoples’ lives where they choose where their life goes next. I’m always impressed by students who seem to know exactly what they want to do with themselves. Some know for sure they will go serve in the military, some know a specific job they want, others have college plans. Then there are the high school students who don’t know. And this column is really about the latter. You don’t have to have a 4.0 going to a prestigious school to feel proud for graduating high school. When I was graduating high school, there was a lot of talk about how hard my class would have to work to get anywhere in life because of all the students from China and India who were studying computer science, the European students who speak five languages … the economy, the value of the dollar and blah, blah, blah. It felt like the world was

G&G Insulation recognized Meridian’s G&G Insulation earned the distinction of being named a Rising Star at the second annual Owens Corning Certified Energy Expert National Meeting in Newport Beach, California, on May 28. Now in its fourth year, the Owens Corning Certified Energy Expert program has set the industry standard for training and certification. against us. “So what?” I said. I’ll figure my stuff out. And that was what I did. And now I find myself in a position by Zachary Chastaine where I am giving advice to high school zchastaine@idahopress.com students on how to take their next steps. © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS One point I try to drive home with them is that it doesn’t matter what they do as long as they love what they do. You can make millions, have a degree from anywhere and still be miserable with what you’re doing. Life can be a real brutal journey where you can run out of money, you go to bed hungry, get your heart broken, lose your friends and family and you find people can be real jerks. As long as you are doing something you’re passionate about with your life, you will find a way to battle through the challenges and work hard enough to make ends meet and thrive. You don’t have to be an amazing high school student to do it, you just have to be able to put the work in when your time comes.

Dozens of people, including Senator Chuck Winder and several members of the Meridian City Council, attended an official ribbon cutting for the Meridian Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility. The ceremony was included as a part of the city’s Public Works Week event. A self guided tour enabled visitors to go through four of the facility’s buildings, including the maintenance facility, administration building, laboratory and controls building, to learn about public works and some of the tasks they carry out as well as what the facility on Ten Mile Road does. Director of Public Works Thomas Barry told visitors about the new facility and some of its capabilities and included a toilet paper roll to cut along with the ceremonial red ribbon.

ON THE TOWN A LIST OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO ENJOY THIS SUMMER

Have some summer fun in Meridian DAIRY DAYS

The 86th consecutive year of Dairy Days starts June 15 and runs until June 20. The event is a staple of Meridian and a fun Dairy Days way to celebrate the city’s history as an agriculture hotspot. Dairy Days is also a way to help show support for the local 4-H Club and FFA groups in the area. A pancake feed helps raise money for the Meridian Foodbank and Meridian Fire Department Burnout Fund. In this day and age, Dairy Days still has cattle and goat shows by Zachary Chastaine zchastaine@idahopress.com and runners can get involved in the Warrior 5K Dairy Days Run. © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS The signature event of Dairy Days for new and longtime residents alike is the Dairy Days Parade. The parade is a mix of floats, classic cars, decorated trucks, bands and more. The parade route goes through the heart of downtown Meridian and makes a loop through the center of the city. With lots of sidewalk space there are plenty of spots to view the festivities from. Each year the Meridian Dairy Princess is crowned through the Meridian Dairy Board Princess Pageant. Last year’s Meridian Dairy Princess was Tessa Groves. However, while the Meridian Dairy Princess has to be between the ages of 15 – 17 another category, the junior dairy princess, is for girls aged 13 – 14. A carnival at Storey Park during Dairy Days offers snacks, rides and amusement for the whole family. With a whole week of fun activities, Meridian Dairy Days is a staple of summer in Meridian. For information on Dairy Days activities and locations, or to apply to be in the parade, or to enter in the shows visit dairydays.org. CableONE Movie Night

CABLEONE MOVIE NIGHT IN MERIDIAN What goes well with a star-filled summer sky? A movie in the park, of course. Movie Night in Meridian is a recurring summer event where every Friday in June, July and August, a giant inflatable screen is set up and a family friendly movie is played for everyone in attendance absolutely free. The event, put on by the Meridian Parks and Recreation Department and CableONE, has been going on since 2007. The venue is Settler’s Park at the intersection of Meridian and Ustick Road. Visitors often bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks to eat while they watch. Families with children of all ages attend the movies, or you can go solo. The 2015 lineup of movies includes Tangled, Paddington, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Maleficent, Big Hero 6 and Annie.

Concessions are available for some shows and vendors sometimes set up booths near the screening. The movies are made possible with help from sponsors from local businesses and organizations as well as CableONE. There are some policies for the movie nights including anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, no smoking or alcohol and movies are subtitled when possible.

Apartment fire on Washington Ave. The Meridian Fire Department responded at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday to a structure fire at 510 E. Washington Avenue at the Washington Square Apartments. After arriving on scene, crews encountered a fire in an upper apartment that fire chief Mark Niemeyer said was rapidly spreading. Crews reported they had the fire controlled at 1:25 pm. Two apartments sustained heavy fire damage with several others sustaining smoke and water damage. Crews are expected to be on scene for the next several hours, continuing to search other apartments and perform mop-up tasks. Although the investigation was still ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, Niemeyer said it was likely that residents would be displaced by the fire and the department’s burnout fund would be used to assist them. One firefighter sustained minor injuries when the floor on a second story apartment gave way. Niemeyer said that firefighter was evaluated and returned to active duty. Niemeyer said in a statement that several agencies and units were involved, including Meridian Fire Department, the Boise Fire Department and the Ada County Paramedics.

School board awaits legal counsel on emails

W

est Ada School District Superintendent Linda Clark said the district’s board of trustees is waiting for a legal opinion following a disby Zachary Chastaine covery that trustzchastaine@idahopress.com ee Carol Sayles © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS sent campaignrelated emails from a district computer. Sayles sent emails recommending then-board candidate Julie Madsen for the May 19 election from her district computer, according to the Idaho Statesman. The emails also included a

link to Madsen’s campaign website. The school district’s official policy on email and electronic communications is listed as code 1001.40, and it does list political causes as one of the prohibited uses of the email system under section four of the policy. Official May 19 results from the Ada County Elections office show that Madsen received 522 votes to beat incumbent Anne Ritter who received 385 votes. Clark said the emails were discovered by a public records request submitted by The Idaho Statesman. Clark said the board’s concern is

district and personnel policies were violated in the emails. “(The board is) concerned that there is a district policy that prohibits the use of district email for politics, and they’re concerned that the information shared may have come from the executive session, which is privileged,” Clark said. Now Clark, at the request of trustee chairman Mike Vuittonet, has requested legal counsel from the district’s attorney Amy White to decide how to proceed. Clark said this was the first time the district had encountered this kind of problem.

She said the board members were surprised by the emails, and that it was up to the board to police themselves. “We’ve never had this before,” Clark said. “So that’s why the chairman asked for a legal opinion.” Clark said she did not know if all of the emails were the same or different but that for the protection of employees and as a matter of Idaho law, information about employees has to be discussed in executive session. Executive sessions are private and not open to the public or media. “All personnel actions in this state are protected,” Clark said.

New Ventures Lab starts fostering business in Meridian

T

he New Ventures Lab in downtown Meridian opened its doors May 28 for an open house and tours for visitors. Although the facility is officially open, the lab is still working to get the interior completely set up. Lab director Rick Ritter said the facility would have its grand opening in September. The New Ventures Lab is home for startup tech businesses to get off the ground. Ritter said the goal is for businesses in the space is to become companies that grow and contribute to the community. This, he said, was key to revitalizing downtown Meridian by creating jobs that are not dependent on retail. Ritter said the space is called a lab since the tech businesses in the space are experimental. It’s also called an incubator hyby Zachary Chastaine brid because it allows business to start in a more open-space zchastaine@idahopress.com environment, and as they develop into a more established and © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS operational business, they could begin moving into a more traditional business workspace. Ritter said the open-space environment is fine for teams that are still experimenting with ideas but that an open-space environment isn’t necessarily conducive to business when a team is ready to operate on its own. “Everybody that we work with will start in that open space,” Ritter said, “and when they get to a certain point, they’ve got their team built, they’ve got market product fit, they’ve answered most if not all of the questions and they’ve got a decent team they can move right down the hall.” This enables fledgling businesses to grow without having to go through the challenges of finding their own space and essentially staying in a somewhat protected environment until they are ready to operate on their own. “It’s a more complete development process,” Ritter said. Some of the tenants who will initially be taking up space in the New Ventures Lab are teams developing tech businesses which may one day be able to hire locally in the community and help grow businesses in the Meridian area. In addition to being a space for new businesses to grow, Ritter said the New Ventures Lab is meant to serve as a space for community collaboration with access to the main events room and open-space area. Ritter said the lab would be working with local artists to display their work in

This maker space, like others the library has developed, would include 3D printers, programming tools and other emerging DIY technologies. Mayor Tammy de Weerd said the lab was a result of partnerships in the community. “We are very excited to open our doors to new start-ups and up and coming entrepreneurs,” she said. “The New Ventures Lab is the result of a tremendous partnerships in our community. From our business community to the West Ada School District, the lab will bring together people of ages with a focus on bringing early stage ideas to fruition within our downtown.”

June 13 is free fishing day in Idaho T he Idaho Department of Fish and Game invites veteran and novice anglers of all ages, residents and non-residents alike, to celebrate June 13 as Free Fishing Day. People can fishing anywhere in Idaho without a license. Though fishing license requirements are suspended for this special day, all other rules, such as limits or tackle restrictions, remain in effect. Even a lack of fishing experience is no excuse not to participate. At special locations around the southwest region, equipment will be available for use and fishing experts will be on hand to help novice anglers learn the ins and outs of fishing. In addition, some locations will be stocked with hatchery rainbow trout prior to Free Fishing Day. Look for the event nearest you at fishandgame.idaho. gov/public/fish. Gee and her family have been in Meridian area for 10 years, and she started her business two years ago. Gee held an open house Saturday is officially open for business. While the space previously may have been an empty business site with peeling green paint, Gee said she saw potential in it and went to work making the entire business fit into a black and white decorum with lit #OMGEE sign. “We got in here and did a lot of remodeling,” Gee said. She specializes in high school senior photography but also shoots a range of photos including family photos, engagements, baby and child portraits as well. Singers sought for national anthem at Boise Hawks games during 2015 season BOISE — The Boise Hawks are looking for the area’s best vocalists, musicians and singing groups to perform the national anthem during the 2015 baseball season. Auditions will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Memorial Stadium located on 5600 N. Glenwood Street in Boise.

Anyone interested in participating will perform in front of a panel of three judges who will then select the performers for the season. Team president Todd Rahr said singing the national anthem in a packed baseball stadium was one of America’s

great traditions. “We know there are many artists in the Boise and surrounding areas, and we want to give them a place to showcase their talents,” Rahr said. Auditions will be held on a first-come basis. Once the judges have made their

decision, the Boise Hawks will contact performers who are selected to sing at the ball games. For information, contact Joe Kelly at Joe@Boisehawks.com and Katie Engelbrecht at Katie@boisehawks.com or 322-5000.

LOCAL NEWS Meridian woman wants to inspire others with art

or many, an art class of some kind is a way to get introduced to the world of art and start making pieces of their own. But Peggy Ann Akovenko dived into the world of art all on her own. Now the Meridian resident and teacher in the Vallivue School District is hoping to inspire others to try new things that they might otherwise not attempt. Akovenko said she started painting a year ago and now produces around two to three paintings per week. Although she said it’s relaxing, she also took painting on because it was fun. Akovenko said she had no formal lessons beyond a drawing class she by Zachary Chastaine zchastaine@idahopress.com had taken in college, but she wants to inspire others to try new things by putting her own art out into the © 2015 MERIDIAN PRESS community. Since she began painting, she has begun painting portraits for friends, submitting her work to book publishers and submitting her work to the Meridian Art Commission for their call to artists to submit utility box art. Akovenko’s paintings range in subject matter from children to landscapes and images of animals and other scenes. Sometimes these images are of her own grandchildren who are dancers. “I’ve always enjoyed the arts,” Akovenko said. What first started out as a hobby when Akovenko received a gift card for Hobby Lobby, she’s now taking on more avenues of getting her art out into the public. Recently her art was on display at the Coffee Studio off Chinden Road. Akovenko said she met the manager and was invited to display her work there. It was experiences like that that she said made her realize opportunities are all around for people who want to take a hobby and do something with it. Akovenko has also answered calls from the city of Meridian for art. “Recently I sent in a CD of 10 of my (photos of paintings) for the city of Meridian,” she said. “They did a call for artists ... so they would have some photos of paintings from different artists, and they could select up to two paintings from each artists to go on those traffic boxes.” Akovenko has also been the co-author of a children’s book called Touchdown Mars, but now that she has started painting, her interest in books has shifted from writing to more of the illustration side of making books. “The other goal is so that people would see that it’s overwhelming sometimes, but if they would just try it they would see it’s a lot of fun and they can do it,” Akovenko said.

SCHOOLS

ISAT Test results hit a series of delays By KEVIN RICHERT Idaho Education News

© IdahoEdNews.org

mean,” said Dan Hollar, a spokesman for the Boise School District, where the 201415 school year ended Tuesday. But all the numbers are incomplete, Hollar said, and the district doesn’t have a full report for any grade. The new ISAT by Smarter Balanced was administered across the state to thirdthrough eighth-graders and 10th graders. The test, aligned to Idaho Core Standards, will count this year for the first time; the assessment was field-tested statewide in 2014. But because the state has been waiting on results from contractors, that means schools and parents are waiting as well. If the schools receive results by Friday, as the State Department of Education expects, they will have until June 26 to pass along the results to parents. And that’s part of the frustration for the schools, Hollar said Monday. The ISAT is a new exam — and, typically, student scores drop the first year of a new assessment. As a result, schools will be busy trying to help parents interpret the new numbers. Church attributes the delays to two problems. First, there were delays in getting handscored results from one contractor, Measurement Inc., and American Institutes for Research, the Washington, D.C.-based contractor delivering the statewide assessments in 11 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Then, AIR had its own glitch. The completed test results weren’t feeding properly into its online reporting system. The contractors were supposed to deliver results within 10 days of the tests. However, the state “would likely not pursue major action” against contractors if the test results are in hand by close of business Friday, Church said.

The school year is all but over — and the contractor handling Idaho’s new standardized test needs an extension. This spring’s results from the new Idaho Standards Achievement Test by Smarter Balanced have been trickling in slowly, so parents won’t find out how their children did until later in the month, and well into summer break. That means school districts are frustrated — and scrambling. The State Department of Education acknowledges the delays, caused by a pair of reporting glitches. The testing period ran from March 30 through May 22 — and since the results were due within 10 days of the test, the state should have received more results by late April or early May, department spokesman Jeff Church said Monday evening. As of Tuesday morning, the department has about 92,000 test scores in hand, representing a majority of the roughly 140,000 students tested this spring. Districts should have all results available by Friday. But two large districts have received only a fraction of their test results. The Nampa School District has received less than 20 percent of its English language arts test scores and 26 percent of its math scores, spokeswoman Allison Westfall said Tuesday. Nearly 7,900 Nampa students took the ISATs. Nampa is already on summer break; its last school day was Friday. Boise has received about 30 percent of its scores, although the numbers vary based on grade and test. “We are working with (the State Department of Education) to explore options Disclaimer: Idaho Education News is funded by a grant to provide parents with the scores and from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation and an understanding of what those scores housed at Boise State University.

SUMMER CONCERTS There are three concert series in Meridian that take place over the summer. The three to watch out for are the Rock the Village concert series, the Kleiner Park Live Summer Concert Series and Concerts on Broadway. These concert series all have something in common: They are all free. Rock the Village features local and touring artists, while some are cover bands of legendary groups such as The Beatles. The Village at Meridian has several dining options right in the plaza area where the concerts take place, and dining locations open up their patios for concert goers. The Kleiner Park Live Summer Concert Series features shows at the Kleiner Park bandshell and takes place on most Thursdays. The start of the series is June 18, and although it is a family friendly series, a beer and wine garden is set up for older audiences. Food vendors and other activities are also set up for the series. Concerts on Broadway is a series of bands playing right in downtown Meridian at Meridian City Hall Plaza on 33 E. Broadway Ave. The shows are held on Saturday and feature swing and other lively music.
