Welcome to the Parks & Recreation Spring/Summer 2014 magazine. I am grateful every day to be able to live, work and play in beautiful Pocatello! Some of our happiest family memories center around time spent with loved ones here in our remarkable city. We are fortunate to reside in a region with so many opportunities for recreation and learning. The City of Pocatello Parks and Recreation Department does an amazing job of serving the Pocatello community with quality recreation programs, well maintained parks, trails, and beautiful open spaces. The Pocatello Zoo, Ross Park Aquatic Complex and Community Recreation Center are a just a few of the incredible facilities available where people can gather to enjoy cultural, recreational and educational experiences. The program and services available through our Team Sports and Outdoor Recreation programs are second to none and our fabulous golf courses can be enjoyed by youth and adults alike. I encourage each of you to take time to explore the area and visit some of the marvelous amenities and various activities available through our Parks & Recreation Department. Brian C. MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM DIRECTOR………. As I contemplate the arrival of spring I am reminded of the many things that start anew. The annual flowers pushing up from a long winter nap in the soil could be likened to ourselves. Now is the time to get out and enjoy the many parks and beautification areas in the City. A walk or bike ride along the many greenway paths or the trails up City Creek provide some good exercise and beautiful scenery. As summer approaches there will be many structured activities to participate in which are listed in the following pages. The parks and recreations staff does an excellent job of administering these programs. I am proud to be a part of this department and look forward to getting a new director. Jerry Sepich, the past director, did an excellent job the past 9 years in making improvements to programs and facilities. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to get a new director of his quality. In the meantime, we will continue to provide many opportunities for young and old to better their lives through exercise. On the horizon I am excited about the new Portneuf Medical Wellness Complex that is going to be built by the fairgrounds. This 80 acre complex will have 16 multiuse sport fields, a 7 acre pond which will have fishing and a beach for water activities. Plenty of walking trails, a BMX bike track, outdoor basketball courts and sand volley ball courts by the pond. This facility when completed will be one of the top facilitates of its kind in the Western US. Please take advantage of the many programs and activities offered through parks and recreation and have a safe and eventful summer. JOGGING TRAIL Sister City Park on Pocatello Creek Rd. This 1K fitness trail, developed with a grant from Wells Fargo Corp., provides a complete exercise system. Exercise stations with signed instruction are set periodically along the graded and graveled fitness trail. Stations are graded for various ability levels and interests. Trails starts east of the entrance to Sister City Park and is also accessible from the parks upper level.

TENNIS COURTS The City provides the following courts for public use: • Raymond Park – Grant & Carson (lighted) • Pocatello High School – N. Hayes & Fremont (lighted) • Highland High School – 1300 Bench Rd. DISC GOLF COURSES Upper Ross Park has a 9 hole course and Sister City Park has a new 18 hole course for disc golf. Holes are marked with sign posts at each tee. Both courses are free and upkeep is made through donations and volunteer help from local golfers. Donations and labor are still appreciated. Updates about tournaments and disc golf activities can be found at www.pvdgc.org. Please do not alter the courses and please clean up after yourself. Be respectful of other park users when throwing.

Rentals A number of parks, shelters and picnic tables can be reserved for special events. Reservation and rental fees can be made in person at the Parks and Recreation Office, 144 Wilson or online at www.pocatello. us. The fees are due at the time of the reservation.

Splash Dances The very popular teen splash dances are for Ages 12 -18. The $5/person charge includes admission to the facility including waterslide, D.J. music and loads of fun. Concession Stand open for snacks and beverages. Dances are held on the following Thursdays from 9 pm-11 pm. Dates: June 26, July 10, July 24 & August 7. General Rules • Anyone entering Ross Park Aquatic Complex must pay an admission fee. No exceptions. • It is recommended that children 12 & under must be accompanied by an adult. • Swim Diapers and Plastics Pants are required for all toddlers under three years old. • Proper swim attire required. • Well fitted Coast Guard Approved Lifejackets are allowed if used within parental reach. • Air filled flotation devices are not permitted (i.e. water wings, rings, etc.). • Glass containers are not allowed in the facility. • Alcoholic beverages or tobacco products of any kind are not permitted. • Patrons must supply their own locks for lockers. Pocatello Zoo Camps provide children the opportunity to spend the summer outside at the Zoo learning about animals, zoos and wildlife conservation. Join us for this enjoyable camp where kids will discover what backyard beasts are around their homes and just waiting to be found.

Grounds, Maintenance, and Construction (Age 18+) Based on your age and experience, you might work on the grounds or on improvements- a great way to help the community, while having fun learning more about animals and your Pocatello Zoo.

Youth Volunteer Programs (Age 14-17)

Hey teens! Looking for a great way to spend your summer? Youth, ages 14-17 may apply for a Junior Tracker volunteer positions at the Zoo. Jr. Trackers assist with camps, education programs, and/or animal care in the Barn Yard. The Zoo is currently accepting applications for summer positions. All youths accepted into the program are required to attend a Tracker training session.

From an Awesome Grizzly Bear Exhibit to a New Visitor Entrance. the Portneuf Valley and Scout Mountain providing the backdrop for everyone watching her. She is a very Happy Bear!

The new and amazing Grizzly Bear Exhibit opened 2012 and helped set new attendance records for Zoo visitors! If you have not seen this world class grizzly display, come visit and experience it. Hundreds have made return trips with their families to sit in the viewing gallery and observe all the increased natural activity that Stripes, the female grizzly, is exhibiting. She spends her days in this fantastic natural exhibit, hunting for food and treats hidden by her zoo keepers, trying to catch the live trout living in the pond below the cascading stream, and contentedly napping. She also roams her new half acre of trees, grass, and lava boulders with the end of

Outdoor Recreation The outdoor recreation program is dedicated to providing quality adventure programs to Pocatello folks that might not have access to them otherwise. To keep costs minimal expect to pitch in- these are NOT guided activities. Teaching skills so people can branch out on their own is a top priority. Fitness level is not as important as motivation;try to break out of your shell. Because of the nature of the programs many are limited in group size to a handful so the instructors can help everyone. Other programs are limited by vehicle capacity, equipment restrictions or logistics. Sign up in advance to ensure a spot. Questions are expected and welcome. Triathlon Training The Pocatello Triathlon is already one of the most accessible multi sport races around. No matter what shape you are in we can help you be ready by September 6 for a sprint triathlon. Outdoor Recreation Rock Climbing Lessons

All youth ages Kids come and hang out at Ross Park with instructors who know how to make the day fun and keep little hands busy on the rocks. Our system maximizes time in the rocks and minimizes time spent in lines. Teens learn to belay one on one and begin to build anchors. Trial and error is no way to learn to climb. This course is designed for adults who want to be able to set up their own climbs, tie the proper knots and belay with confidence. Outdoor Recreation Middle School Outdoor Summer (Ages 12-14) Adults: It can be hard to deal with grumpy tweens all summer. Send them to us once a week. From 8am-5pm we will spend the lazy days of summer on a different outdoor activity including disc golf, canoeing, biking, GPS navigation, tubing, challenge course, rock climbing and hiking. This is a great chance to get away from electronic devices and experience Idaho. The trip finishes with an overnight raft trip. Scholarships are available. Teens: When you go back to school to write the inevitable essay in English “what I did with my summer vacation” this will help you avoid having to mention that you spent 10 days in math camp. Family City of Rocks Day Trip and Overnighter (ages 8+ w/ adult, 12+ without adult) Take the family to the City of Rocks to hike, photograph and CLIMB. Our instructors will be setting up climbs on easier routes for novices to try their hand at climbing granite. Climbing experience would be helpful but not necessary. All climbing equipment is provided. Our instructor will be there for two days, you can go either day or both and make a camping trip out of it. Cost: $31, Saturday only- $26 per person. - Team Sports KID’S FLAG FOOTBALL The Flag Football Program is an instructional program offered to 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls. Teams will be organized to play “11 Man” Football. Teams must have a minimum of 20 players and up to a maximum of 22 players per team. The League’s purpose is to prepare the participants for Little League Football when they are in the 5th grade. It is designed to teach the basic fundamentals and techniques of football. Teams are supervised by volunteer coaches at all practices and games. Participants must be in the third or fourth grade as of September 2014. Parents will be asked to purchase a uniform jersey once the team name has been chosen. Season Begins: Tuesday, September 9, 2014 Season Ends: Late October 2014 ATTN.: All dates subject to change based upon registration figures.
