oday marks the end of the London Olympics 2012. Even if you are not a huge sports fan, it is hard not to love this wonderful celebration of athleticism and sportsmanship. A time when the entire world is focused on one venue, and competition between nations is about physical strength and ability rather than race, religion or power. I love to watch parents in the stands as their child competes. They have their own way of dealing with the stress. Many can’t watch at all, others watch through clenched fingers, while some Machele duck behind other family members. They all want to be there, Hamilton see it happening, but the stress can overtake them. Machele Hamilton writes a column about painting and home One memorable couple watched their young gymnast while twisting, turning, leaning and grimacing in their seats, in perfect improvement. It is published every other week on Mondays. unison with not only each other, but with their daughter’s She also writes a blog, Don’t Get performance on the floor below. And it is always hard to watch Me Started, at idahopress.com. parents hang in suspense, waiting for a winner to be listed, when those of us at home have the advantage of all those television graphics and we already know the outcome. Our kids were all involved in sports, and we have had experience with every level from peewee to collegiate. Through the highs and lows we organized fundraisers, carpooled, condensed schedules and gave up weekends, all while keeping them washed, fed and properly attired in the correct uniform. We have stressed, cheered, cried, spent sleepless nights, traveled immeasurable miles, spent way too much money, celebrated wins, accepted defeats and stood by each and every child. But through it all, we have never known the level of stress and anxiety that parents of Olympians feel. Take everything we experienced and magnify it a hundredfold. They realize with exquisite clarity that a lifetime of work and sacrifice by an entire family will hang in the balance for a miniscule moment. Yes, I admire today’s Olympians. I love their dedication, their sacrifice, their hearts, right alongside their physical perfection, strength and amazing skills. But I also know they did not get there on their own. Just like the commercial showing mothers across the nation coaxing babies out of bed before dawn for practice, the best athletes have someone on their side always encouraging. So no matter if your child is just another grade school soccer player, a well-known collegiate level athlete, or yes, even an Olympian, remember that you are his/her greatest asset. Without the time, energy and sacrifice from those around them, it is hard for any athlete to be successful. At the completion of these 2012 Olympic Games, I tip my hat not only to our amazing athletes, but to their amazing families. You always make us proud and we thank you.

Fighting the fight By TORRIE COPE

F

Today’s Woman

irefighters are tough. Their job requires it. And they don’t come tougher than Jeanie Allen. When firefighters respond to a call they don’t always know what they will find. “It’s tough in a lot of ways because of what you see but you know you are making a difference,” the Nampa resident said. But one of the toughest things she’s seen lately was her fellow firefighters — grown men, crying as she told them she has a rare and deadly cancer and doctors gave her less than a year to live. Allen’s life is all about helping people. Even with a fulltime job at the Department of Labor, she finds time to work with at-risk youth at COSSA Academy in Wilder and as an on-call firefighter. Plus she is a wife and mother of two. Allen has been with the Middleton Rural Fire District for about eight years. As one of three women on the crew, Allen works in a man’s world. In fact, she pursued the job after seeing an article about the dearth of female firefighters in Boise. But it’s a natural fit for the strong and athletic 45-year-old. “I’m a very physical person and it’s like you work as a firefighter and you get paid to workout on shift,” she said. “… And (I like) the camaraderie, and you’re doing things as a team.” Firefighters share a deep bond and have each other’s backs at all times. When Allen had to tell the crew doctors found tumors in her abdomen that were stage four clear-cell sarcoma, it crushed them. But they weren’t going to leave one of their own behind. Even before Allen started her first chemotherapy treatments, her fellow firefighters shaved their heads in solidarity. They prepared meals for Allen, her husband Rob and their children Skye, 14, and Jesse, 12. They also held raffles and a large motorcycle rally. A large pink ribbon with Allen’s number, 3217, hangs prominently on the front of the Middleton Fire Station. “We are doing whatever we can to take the burden off of her and relieve some of the financial stress so she can just enjoy spending time with her family,” Middleton’s Deputy Fire Chief Marty Ogan said prior to the “Going Bald For Jeanie” event. Allen called her grim diagnosis a “crock of baloney,” on 6

her personal blog. She’s not taking it lying down — she’s “fighting the fight,” which has become her slogan. There are only about 25 to 30 people in the world diagnosed with the same deadly cancer — Allen did her research. “It’s hard having such a rare cancer because there’s no one to turn to,” she said. “Even the drug I’m on it’s like ... is anybody else on it? Can I ask you what it’s like? Are there any side effects?” She connected with some of those people through a Facebook group, but more than half have died. As Allen undergoes treatment, she can’t work for the fire district in her usual capacity. Still, she does what she can, including an EMT shift at the Canyon County Fair. She is also on disability leave as a workforce consultant for the Idaho Department of Labor. It’s clear Allen loves firefighting. Her blue eyes light up when she talks about it and being away is hard on her. “I miss it. They’re having such a busy year this year and I’m missing it,” she said. Shortly after she became a firefighter, Allen competed in national Firefighter Combat Challenge events and did very well. She described the challenges as firefighter obstacle courses that keep her motivated and in shape. “Being a female you’ve got to really stay up on your fitness and your strength because ... you’re being judged about that all the time … so you almost have to over-prove yourself,” she said. Allen proved herself at the competitions, and the people she met there have also reached out to help. Challenge organizers made Allen a special purple and yellow badge with the words “camaraderie, courage, strength and resilience.” Purple is the color for cancer and yellow is the color for her specific type of cancer. They are also raising money for her. Allen travels to a specialist in Seattle every two months for treatment. Insurance doesn’t pay for travel expenses, but the Middleton crew helps with those expenses. “I couldn’t do it without them,” she said. “They help me with transportation costs and medical bills. They allow me to get treatment in different ways.” Alternative and experimental treatments used to treat rare cancers are also not covered by insurance. Radiation and chemotherapy fed her cancer, so now Allen receives what she described as the treatment of the future — oral chemotherapy that goes directly to the tumors and starves them. It is easier on the body than intravenous chemo. She also takes natural medicines with herbs and is kept on a restrictive diet, which she is not a fan of. Allen said the treatments appear to be working. At one point she had 10 tumors in her abdomen but her last scan showed a reduction. Allen has spent many years working to help others. As Allen fights her fight, the people she has touched throughout her life are making sure she is not fighting alone.

iding motorcycles was a huge thrill when I was growing up. It was a bonding experience with my Dad, and I loved feeling the wind in my face as the road whizzed by. I married a man much like my father, one who has a love for excitement and the open road. My husband and dad have spent countless hours designing and creating new parts for their bikes and I wanted to get in on that game. Only about 1 in 10 women own motorcycles, and that seems odd. It’s more economical, easier to park, easier to make your way out of a traffic jam and the most obvious of reasons: It’s fun! My ride of choice is a 2002 Buell Blast. My husband found it online and in order to get it in the price range we were looking for (you know me) we had to buy a bullet bike on the cheap and trade for it. It’s a perfect fit for me, and I absolutely love how zippy it is. The bright yellow color adds to the fun. I adore my pink flowered helmet my husband bought me last year even though men tell me it should be more mainstream. I figure if people notice it, they will see me on the road, making it safer for me to ride. And that’s a good thing.

SAFETY FIRST: ISTARS Dressing to be seen is one safety strategy, but you need to do more than that. Idaho has a great program to Ride Safe and Ride Smart. Idaho S.T.A.R. (Skills Training Advantage For Riders, http://idahostar.org/) is supported by the Department of Motor Vehicles. You get your permit at the end of the training. It’s very affordable at only $105. Find a motorcycle manual for testing and rules of the road at: http://www. itd.idaho.gov/dmv/driverservices/ds.htm.

Mad about the ‘60s Work some ‘Mad Men’ style into your everyday look By Charlotte Wiemerslage

ou don’t have to be a fan of the hit AMC show “Mad Men” to see that ‘60s fashion is back in a big way. Bouffant hair, headbands, cat-eye liner and dramatic red lips recently graced the runways of Marc Jacobs, Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren and Zac Posen. But how do you take classic ‘60s style and update it for 2012? By playing with one element, and avoiding a head-to-toe Nancy Sinatra look. We asked Yvette Contreras, a soon-tobe cosmetology grad at the Milan Institute in Nampa, to walk us through two signature (but tricky) ‘60s looks: the black Cat-Eye and the True Red lip.

Yvette Contreras Cosmotology student

The True Red Lip

Model: Lisa Rosiles, 20 Before: Apply foundation or other face makeup according to your normal routine. Keep eyeshadow in neutral shades — we’re going for a clean look, not smoky.

Model: Brittany Tatum, 23 Before: Prep with a lip balm or lip primer — lips should be smooth and hydrated.

Step One: Start with a flat angled brush with synthetic bristles. Dip it into a black gel liner, wiping off any clumps or excess product. Start at the outer corner of the eye and draw the brush inward, stopping about halfway. This will be the thickest part of the line.

Step One: Start with a creamy red lip liner (not a pencil) and outline your mouth. You can redraw the shape slightly for that “bow” look, but make sure the corrections aren’t too dramatic.

Step Two: Dip brush again. Extend the line toward the inner eye, tapering the thickness as you go. Be careful to stay as close to the lash line as possible.

Step Two: Fill in your lips with the liner, starting at the line and working inward. Stop about a centimeter from the inside of your mouth.

Step Three: Dip brush again. With the point of the brush toward your eye, use short strokes to draw a short line from the outer corner toward your eyebrow. Taper as you go so the “wing” draws to a point. This line should be at least as long as the width of your brush. Finish with a few generous coats of black mascara.

Step Three: Apply red lipstick in short strokes — this minimizes the chance for errors. For a cleaner, more precise look, finish by applying concealer with a flat brush around the edges of the mouth. Blend the concealer with a clean brush or cotton swab. Top with gloss if desired.

indi Jones figured there wasn’t much she could do about the large clusters of purple veins behind her knees. They’d gotten worse over the past five years — particularly on the right leg — creating heaviness, itchiness and tenderness similar to a bruise. But it wasn’t until the 34-year-old Jones visited the Saltzer Vein Clinic that she was told if left untreated those troublesome veins — varicose veins — could get much worse. “Your legs can get really swollen and discolored from all the blood down there,” says Jones, a stay-at-home mom from Meridian. “The veins come up above the skin and get really ropey.” Jones isn’t waiting for that to happen. She wears compression stockings to improve blood flow from her legs, and is hoping to hear soon that her insurance company will approve a procedure called Endovenous Ablation. Molly Piccono, a certified physician assistant who manages the Saltzer Vein Clinic, describes the procedure as using a thin, ultrasound-guided catheter and heat energy to weld shut a vein that no longer functions properly. In some cases, the valves are so dilated the vein doesn’t do an effective job of pushing blood back up through the body and swelling, discoloration of the skin at the ankles or ulcers can result. Within a month and a half of Endovenous Ablation, Piccono says the body has absorbed the ineffectual vein and redirected the flow of blood to other, healthy veins. “The vein we close is a permanent fix; that vein is gone,” Piccono says. There’s a chance, however, that down the road the healthy vein that took over from the faulty one may develop the same problems. Endovenous Ablation, which Piccono says was developed in the early 2000s, is beginning to replace the traditional method of vein stripping, where a surgeon removes a section of vein, resulting in a longer recovery. Endovenous Ablation is an outpatient procedure using local anesthetic. At Saltzer Vein Clinic, they’re scheduled for Fridays and patients return to work Monday. “We want them walking and doing regular activities,” Piccono says.

Preventing varicose veins

Piccono says genetics play a big role in determining who will get varicose veins. Occupation can, too. Especially vulnerable are employees “working on their feet on concrete for 10 hours a day.” The chances of varicose veins increase during pregnancy and among weight lifters. Piccono says women are only slightly more likely than men to suffer from varicose veins. But they may also pay closer attention to their bodies and be more likely to seek treatment.

What are varicose veins? Varicose veins can be blue, red or flesh colored and may appear twisted, bulging or similar to ropes. They cause achy, tired, heavy legs that may be tender or swollen. Varicose veins are caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins, those blood vessels that return blood from the rest of our body to the heart. In a healthy vein, valves shut to prevent blood from flowing back into the legs. But if the valves become dilated or weak, the blood can leak back into the vein (that’s reflux) and collect there (called a venous insufficiency).

Genetics may determine whether you get varicose veins, but Certified Physician Assistant Molly Piccono of the Saltzer Vein Clinic says there are steps you can take to slow their progression. Compression stockings: Piccono says many insurance companies won’t even consider covering the procedure to correct varicose veins until a patient has tried compression stockings for at least three months. At the Vein Clinic, a knee-high version of the stockings — which squeeze your legs to help blood move more effectively — are prescribed for patients when they’re working, exercising and otherwise on their feet during the day. Varicose vein patient Mindi Jones says the stockings are more fashionable than the name implies, although she doesn’t pair them with shorts or short skirts, only under jeans or workout pants. And, she says, they’re hot. Weight loss: Control your weight to avoid placing extra pressure on those leg veins. Exercise: In one of those cruel ironies of life, Piccono says exercise — which helps keep weight under control — may make varicose vein symptoms worse because it causes the veins to dilate more. Elevate your legs: Put your feet up as much as possible. Crossing your legs: Piccono says women chronically crossing their legs may cause outbreaks of spider veins, but isn’t likely to affect varicose veins. Spider veins are small blue or red surface lines usually found on the ankles or thighs. Comfortable shoes: Footwear also doesn’t appear to have an effect on varicose veins, Piccono says, but adds, wearing something comfortable while you’re on the job or on your feet is still a good idea. Above: Dr Steven Williams inserts a 60 centimeter catheter into a vein that will be sealed shut during an Endovenous Ablation, a treatment for varicose veins at the Saltzer Vein Clinic in Nampa. The entire procedure, which seals shut the vein, generally takes 30 minutes. Opposite page, left: Williams threads a guiding wire through a needle into a vein that will be sealed shut. Katie Kern took Nampa Fit Studio’s challenge And lost 54 pounds

K

atie Kern, 38, Caldwell, started 2012 at 231 pounds. Today, she’s 54 pounds lighter. She competed in the Canyon County Weight Loss Challenge to motivate herself and hold herself accountable. Kern made two key changes: Quit the stinkin’ thinkin’ that it was selfish to put her health first. Adopt a three-pronged mantra: Eat less, move more, and don’t quit. And just because she’s lost weight doesn’t mean she will quit her regimen. “I will continue to stick with my key changes to keep the weight off. I am planning on becoming a certified trainer. I hope to inspire and lead others in losing weight and starting healthy lifestyles while maintaining mine.” Kern sought inspiration. “Kim Rose and the trainers at Nampa Fit Studio have created a fitness family that is motivating, inspiring, encouraging, supportive, and fun! Kim helped the team realize the value and worth of ourselves. She gave us all the tools and guidance for a healthy life. She taught us what real portion sizes look like, how to plan healthy meals, worked us hard, and to get over all the crap in our lives. Kim is an amazing woman who has had an impact on many lives. She is an inspiration to me.”

The inspiration at Nampa Fit Studio Nampa Fit Studio owner Kim Rose sought applications for people who wanted to participate in the Canyon County Weight Loss Challenge. “We asked only candidates with goals of losing at least 50 pounds to join our team. We started the challenge with 20 and at the final weigh-in, 16 had completed the competition. “The program started Jan. 22 and ended July 14 with mandatory monthly weighins. “The team lost nearly 700 pounds, which accounted for 25 percent of the total weight lost during the entire challenge. “Of our 16 team members to finish, four placed in the top 15 places, with the greatest weight loss at 136.8 pounds for one of the male competitors. “The $10,000 prize money was based on percent of body weight lost and not pounds lost, so no one from our team took home the cash prizes because they all started out quite a bit heavier than most of the other competitors, but we all still consider it a total victory.” The Fit Studio held classes, private workouts, group discussions to change habits and face hurdles. Rose advises those struggling with weight to get into the right mindset. “Begin with (the) goal of improving your day-to-day life. Tell yourself, ‘I am going to take this class because I want to be able to walk through the grocery store without getting winded.’”

Rose said she focuses on clients who feel like they have already tried everything. The studio offers the basics and it’s been proven: you have to move more to lose weight and keep it off. “But to keep at it, you have to be engaged and you have to want to go.”

For more information Nampa Fit Studio offers a variety of classes such as zumba, yoga, kickboxing, strength-training and pilates on a payper-use basis. For more information visit NampaFitStudio.com. For more information about the Canyon County Weight Loss Challenge visit at hodia.org/ccwlc/

Try this: Pair beer with your favorite foods By Amanda Weaver Today’s Woman contributor

T

he wine industry has done a fantastic job offering food pairings with all types of wine. Lately, the focus has shifted to beer and food pairings. With

Porter or stouts

India Pale Ale

Goes well with hearty foods and anything with gravy. Also goes well with barbecue and traditional pub faire. Don’t forget dessert, such as a raspberry and chocolate pairing with a darker stout. Try this: Sierra Nevada Porter is a medium ale with a malted barley taste that finishes very smooth.

IPAs goes well with beef dishes or food that is full bodied in flavor. Blackened chicken or buffalo wings are great for this beer. White meat fish or something savory also goes well with IPA. Try this: Samuel Adams Whitewater IPA is a light, smooth beer that has a mild hoppy taste with a fusion of Belgian-style white ale.

types of beer are being brewed, pairings have expanded and gathered a new type of audience. As the temperature begins to soar, we find ourselves reaching for an ice cold beer with our dinner rather than a sultry wine.

Fruity beer or ale This goes well with lamb and wild game such as venison or elk. Try this: Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss has an unfiltered taste with a clean raspberry finish.

Amber ale This is a good all-around beer – nothing too sweet. Goes well with sandwiches, soups and pizza. Would be a good lunch choice. Try this: Fat Tire’s Amber Ale has a slight caramel taste with a bit of hop bitterness.

When thinking of pairings for beer, keep in mind the main flavors the beer offers. Is it a hoppy bitterness, malt flavor, or a fruity finish? As always, the first foods we think of are fries and other salty foods. Pairings have gone far beyond this traditional philosophy.

Bitter ale or pilsners

Golden or blonde ale

Expect a little more hoppy flavor. Goes very well with fried foods like fried catfish or something smoked, such as barbecue. The hop taste cuts through the grease of fried foods. Try this: Peregrine Pilsner has a darker hop taste with clean finish.

This is a good thirst quencher, not too hoppy or bitter. Goes well with spicy food such as a spicy chicken dish. Also goes well with seafood and beef dishes. Try this: Blonde Bomb Shell is a good choice.

Blogging? Capture your modern scrapbook in a book By Tiffany A. Cruickshank For Today’s Woman

I

have always enjoyed the idea of keeping a journal or family records. Blogging is the modern-day scrapbook, and I know future generations of our family are not going to wonder what I was like – for better or worse, they will know through my blog. I started my blog in November 2008 to keep up with college friends as we had moved post-graduation. It has turned into more than that — my blog is a collection of our crazy life together. If blogging becomes obsolete, I will have a record of what I have written through my blog books. I recently ordered my first book with posts from 2008-2009 from The Cutest Blog on the Block. It’s simple: Choose a cover, titles, and the stories you want to include in your professionally designed blog book.

Get started Start small. Blogger or Wordpress (both free) are user-

rants on my blog. Many popular blogs focus on a specific area such as cooking or quilting. My advice, be yourself and write about what makes you happy! Select your blog name and URL with care. Be sure it is something you can grow with. Stay positive if you don’t have followers immediately. It takes time to build an audience. Jot down post ideas for later use so when you have time to blog, you have notes as reminders.
