Flying South Songwriter Abigail Rose Is “Goin’ to the Beach!”

When Abigail Rose received her first guitar for her eleventh birthday, she was hooked on writing and performing music. “It came very naturally to me,” the Nashville native says. “I always loved to talk and to entertain and make people laugh. It grew into the dream I wanted my whole life.” Since then, she has taken the music industry head-on by connecting with other songwriters, perfecting her musical and vocal skills, and performing at events around the country, including the Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival in 2012 and 2013. It was at the 2012 event that Resort Collection team members and local friends became enamored with Abigail Rose’s sweet voice and fun-loving stage presence. She has also played during the nearby 30A Songwriters Festival and at Farm Fest in North Carolina, the Georgia Throwdown, and the CMA Music Festival. This seventeen-year-old songbird is working with some of Nashville’s best producers and songwriters to advance her career, and she continues to rise within the country music world. Resort Collection is proud to have worked with her on its new official song, “Goin’ to the Beach!” “Being a songwriter, you have to be observant,” Abigail says. “I’m inspired by all kinds of things for my music: relationships, love, my friends, my family and their stories, and just life in general.”
Abigail got together with two of her fellow writers in Nashville, Daniel Crane and Robert Counts, to create the new “Goin’ to the Beach!” song. “They’re both great songwriters and Daniel grew up near the beach, so I thought it would be fun to get that perspective,” Abigail explains. “When we were writing this song, it definitely made me want to go to the beach, especially since it was only sixteen degrees in Nashville the day we wrote it! Hopefully it will do that for others, too.” Her favorite part of writing and performing, Abigail confides, is inspiring other people with her music the way she has been inspired by artists such as Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow, and Grace Potter. “I just want to make people smile and enjoy good music,” she says. “When you have a person tell you that a song meant something to them, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

The informal use of the word goin’ is intentional, showing Panama City Beach as a vacation destination with a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. It also plays on the Southern colloquial way of saying “Goin’ to the beach.” Most people do actually say they’re “goin’” to the beach rather than “going” to the beach—and this too sets the branding apart. Hold on to your Stetsons; here’s the 2014 headliner lineup: On Friday, August 29, one of the world’s biggest country crossover stars will take the stage. On Friday, August 29, six-time Grammy winner, American Idol winner, and global sensation Carrie Underwood will grace the stage on what promises to be a night to remember. Saturday, August 30, Dierks Bentley—a Nashville favorite with ten number-one hits under his belt—will be performing. Then on Sunday, August 31, Grammy nominee, CMA Entertainer of the Year, and The Voice coach Blake Shelton is sure to deliver a gangbuster grand finale. Dan Rowe echoed Lovelady’s gung ho sentiments. “The Gulf Coast Jam will bring the biggest stars in country music to Panama City Beach for Labor Day Weekend to help kick off our busy lineup of fall events,” Rowe says. “Nashville’s stars have been coming to the area for decades for vacation. Now, we’re putting them to work while they’re here—and giving everyone a chance to enjoy great music and a great beach.” While organizers are awaiting final confirmation on the dozens of performers and sponsors before officially announcing this year’s full lineup, festivalgoers can be assured that they will experience the same stellar stage

production and first-class sponsor tents and refreshment venues as before. “We are dialoguing with several national sponsors for this year’s festival, including Ford and major credit card companies,” Trepanier reveals. Besides bringing megawatt country music stars to Panama City Beach, the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam also gives back to its community in a big way. Last year the festival raised $20,000 in donations, which were shared among Habitat for Humanity, Arnold High School, Naval Support Activity Panama City, Miracle Strip Junior Woman’s Club, and the VFW. Revenue was also generated for local hospitality-driven businesses such as short-term condo rentals, hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, retail shops, and grocery stores, just to name a few. With an anticipated increase in 2014’s attendance, the Panama City Beach community is bound to benefit even more this year.

Camp Helen State Park Camp Helen is rich in history and is a hidden gem on the western border of Panama City Beach. Like a fine wine, the annual Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival just gets better with age—thirty-seven years and counting, to be exact. On a beautiful harvest moon weekend in October 2013, the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, and the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau once again teamed up with local restaurateurs, businesses, charities, and volunteers to present the Panama City Beach Seafood and Music Festival. Record crowds flocked to the main event at the newly built state-of-the-art Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater to celebrate the area’s legendary seafood and coastal lifestyle, not to mention to hear a few rock ’n’ roll legends. “It was a wonderful event that really showcased the new Aaron Bessant Park, which opened last spring,” says Dan Rowe, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. The festival kicked off on a Thursday evening with the annual UNwineD event, held at Aaron Bessant Park. The evening’s crisp 60 | resor tcollection.com
fall air was filled with the sounds of popping corks and lively tunes performed by charismatic singer/guitarist Sean Flood of the Panhandlers, a popular local band. Over two hundred attendees mingled, toasted, and tasted a selection of award-winning wines, craft beers, and delicious tapas and desser ts prepared by area chefs. Par ticipating restaurants for the evening included Fishale Taphouse and Grill, Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant, Runaway Bay Caribbean Grill, Firefly, and Hammerhead Fred’s. On Friday and Saturday, the above restaurants featured boatloads of fresh assor ted seafood prepared every way imaginable. Adventurous eaters lined up for shark on a stick, Hawaiian-style ahi tuna poke, deep-fried frog legs, and alligator. Smok ‘n’ Butts BBQ and Shipwreck Island Catering Company rounded out the something-for-everyone festival menu. Spor ts fans flocked to the adjacent Coors Light Mobile Spor ts Bar, which debuted at last year’s festival with a sleek, wraparound bar and four teen flat-screen TVs, so they could catch all the action on the field and in the park. Look for this popular par ty “hot spot” to be a familiar site at future festivals. On Saturday morning, the reel festival action began at Capt. Anderson’s Marina, which sponsored a plethora of waterfront activities and competitions with proceeds benefiting three local children’s charities. All ages participated in the deep-sea and bay fishing tournaments: Capt.
Anderson’s had made it their lofty mission to get every fishing pole (and spear) in Bay County in the water. Their zealous efforts paid off—nearly two hundred lionfish were hauled in during the Second Annual Lionfish “Lion Tamer” Dive Tournament. Congratulations to last year’s winner, thirteen-year-old Courtney Galbreath of the Diver’s Den team, who brought in a whopping total of twenty-three lionfish! Capt. Anderson’s Marina furthered its efforts to inform the public about the destructive yet delicious lionfish and held free cooking demonstrations and tastings by Captain Ron featuring this emerging seafood delicacy. Just as the sun star ted setting at Aaron Bessant Park, the stars came out to play. The stellar lineup of musical talent brought festivalgoers in record numbers. VIP tickets, which included special perks such as preferred parking, stage-front seating, complimentary drinks, and access to stage-side seating, had sold out weeks in advance, and more than eleven thousand festival admission tickets were sold throughout the weekend. “I think the festival accomplished two goals,” says Lance Allison, president and CEO of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce. “It brought people into town and at the same time provided locals with great enter tainment. It also far exceeded the expectations we had for this year: attendance was double what I was going to consider a success. We’re ecstatic about the turnout.”
Friday’s festival rocked out to Nashville singer/songwriter Abigail Rose, popular New Orleans rockers Better Than Ezra, and headliner Collective Soul. Saturday’s sizzling roster drew even bigger crowds with Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project, the Andy Velo Band, and classic rock ’n’ roll favorites Loverboy and Foreigner. “The success of last year’s festival highlights is why the tourist development council invested its first BP marketing suppor t funds into the park after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” Rowe says. “It is a lasting legacy. Having such a nice performance venue will allow us to create tourism oppor tunities, like the seafood festival and other big concer ts, for a lifetime.”
