A TOWN OF IDEAS

You can’t finish a city in a day or a lifetime. All you can do is start. Rome was not built in a day but has actually spanned thousands of years. Seaside, on the other hand, has been continually created for 40 years as of 2023.

A BOHEME DESIGN

When certified Master Chef Tom Catherall and restaurateur David Richard Sr. teamed up to bring a new restaurant concept to South Walton, Florida, the community soon embraced it with open arms and eager chopsticks. Aja Elevated Asian Cuisine is located in the 30Avenue lifestyle center at the east end of Scenic Highway 30-A and Highway 98. Boasting an extensive menu of Asian-influenced fare, sushi, cocktails, wine, sake, and so much more, Aja has become known as a must-try dining destination in the area. Richard and Catherall also aim to bring a taste of Ibiza meets Miami nightlife flair to the hot spot with cool music, DJ sets on weekends, dancing, and specials.

BRUSHSTROKES OF LIFE

A MASTERPIECE in the MAKING

o live life well, you must embrace it as if it were a dance. Life presents challenges almost daily, but that’s all part of the beautiful dance of life. This symphony matures us while softening sharp edges and strengthening other areas. Viewing life with this perspective—both during the good times and the bad—teaches us to live one day at a time because no matter what you think, that’s all we have—today.

This month’s issue includes so much beauty—art, cuisine, fashion, travel, and all the other beautiful things we’ve included, which is why we’re calling it the Art of Life edition. We are all creating something, and it’s beautiful when celebrated, especially when it’s perfect.

Over the past twenty-eight years, my husband, Jerry, and I have collected art as we’ve traveled through life. Our art acquisitions have never been impulsive but rather a result of a profound connection with the art and, in many cases, with the artist. When we moved from our home of twenty-five years during the pandemic, we were surprised to find that we had built up quite a substantial art collection and had no regrets about it. We have developed a deep connection with each artist and their work, and we have cherished the process of adding their creations to our home and office. Seeing how different art pieces take on a new look and feel in a different space is fascinating. Displaying our art in our newly imagined pied-à-terre brings back memories of where and when we first fell in love with each painting. It allows me to reminisce about the first time we saw it, and memories rush back to the place and time.

During one of our first jaunts to Paris and Rome, we spent time browsing and speaking with the street artists selling vibrant, colorful paintings. The thrill of carefully choosing which pieces to buy, considering their beauty and the memories they would evoke, was an exhilarating experience we still cherish. When I catch a glimpse of these pieces during the day, they instantly transport me back to those lazy afternoons on the Seine and the Spanish Steps with my love.

Once, and I’m ashamed to admit it, I made a purchase without informing my husband. I had been admiring an Audrey Hepburn-inspired piece of Ashley Longshore’s for over a year, waiting for the perfect moment to invest. When the opportune moment finally arrived, I ordered the spectacular artwork, thinking I would have time to tell Jerry before it was delivered. However, I miscalculated the delivery date. When he called me to ask about a rather large crate on our front porch, I had to delicately explain the surprise encased inside. Although I don’t recommend this approach, he ended up loving it once he uncrated it. Phew!

Since then, our office has acquired several more original pieces by Longshore. We proudly showcase unique artworks by Nathan Alan Yoakum, celebrated for his vibrant paintings and sculptures, and the renowned artist Shantell Martin, known for her large-scale black-and-white line drawings. Additionally, we have pieces by several other notable artists on display.

Once you realize that nothing lasts forever and that every day is a blank canvas, you can create your life one brushstroke at a time. The transformative power of art is a beacon of hope, reminding us that fresh starts and new beginnings await us each day. We are all masterpieces in the making, constantly evolving and growing.

When Jerry and I were newlyweds, I organized an art show at Carillon Beach in Panama City Beach, Florida, in the town’s charming Meeting Chapel, where we had our wedding. Over the three-day event, we had the opportunity to spend numerous hours with the artist, who was from New York and was having his first show. We were very impressed by his work and talent. Despite the financial strain just a few months into our marriage, we decided that investing in the art was worth it. This purchase marked the beginning of our appreciation for various art forms and subject matters.

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STORYTELLING MEDIUM?

VIE Editor & VIE Book Club Podcast Host @jordanlstaggs

I think my favorite form of storytelling is a good, old-fashioned paperback novel. I love getting lost in another world while turning the pages, feeling the satisfaction of watching my bookmark travel further while I delve into each story, solving mysteries or visiting fantastical places with characters who feel like new friends. To me, it just isn’t the same when reading in a digital format (although the convenience is nice). My favorite books stay on my shelves as decorative memories to revisit from time to time. I’m happy to pass others to the next reader so they can enjoy it and share the same stories I have read. One of these days, I hope to see my name printed on one of these beloved books as the author!

Vice President of Chef Jim Shirley Enterprises @surelymad

Audio Dramas are a century-old tradition—A Comedy of Danger was the first, played on the BBC in 1924—that evolves remarkably well with the times and technology but is firmly rooted in traditional oral storytelling. Modern audio dramas are a beautiful hybridization of theater, literature, and Foley work. They create an auditory storytelling experience that can often be enjoyed at the listener’s pace, wherever they might be, or read through transcripts, making them accessible to a broad audience. Every genre can be adapted for audio dramas, and it is a remarkable outlet for modern storytellers.

Interior Decorator & Content Creator @daniklaric

For me, interior design is the ultimate storytelling medium. It’s a way to blend personal history with imagination, creating spaces that evoke emotion and spark conversation. Each piece—whether a

thrifted mid-century chair or a quirky, whimsical art print—tells a story of its own, layered with meaning and memories. Design allows you to push boundaries, mix styles, and break the rules, crafting a visual narrative that’s not only seen but also felt. It’s about creating an environment where every corner has something to say, inviting people to step into a story that feels both familiar and refreshingly unexpected.

I LOVE GETTING LOST IN ANOTHER WORLD WHILE TURNING THE PAGES...

I love fashion as a way to tell stories. You can express so much with what you wear and how you accessorize, just as designers tell a story when creating a look or a collection for the runway. I have worked at the Alys Shoppe in Alys Beach, Florida, for over a decade and love styling clients and helping them tell their stories through the pieces they fall in love with. Modeling for fashion photography is also one of my hobbies, and it’s always inspiring to see what the photographer captures in an image and what kind of story just one photo can tell. It was a dream to be photographed for this magazine cover! I love that the photo tells the story of a fun, stylish night out with friends at Aja before you flip through the pages.

A NEW H OT SP OT ON 30A

I love the Nightlife. I want to Boogie.

Imagine an upscale dining experience, where a DJ plays a carefully curated selection of tunes beside a gracefully flowing water feature, lights move in sync with the music, and servers glide through the tables with freshly prepared sushi rolls and high-end wines. The restaurant’s ambiance is a blend of modern chic and Asian elegance, creating a unique and unforgettable dining experience. This experience is not in exotic destinations like the Mediterranean coast of the South of France, trend-setting locales in Southern California, or the ultrachic South Beach in Miami, Florida. Surprisingly, it’s located in a different kind of south—in a region of the Florida Panhandle known as South Walton. There, you will find the chic restaurant—Aja 30A.

Located in the heart of 30Avenue, a premier shopping and dining destination in Inlet Beach, Florida, Aja 30A revolutionizes the dining experience along Walton County’s chic Highway 30-A corridor. Every aspect of the restaurant’s ambiance, from the carefully crafted decor and subtle lighting to the impressive feature mural and specially selected art pieces, reflects a commitment to excellence. The menu is unquestionably one of the restaurant’s standout features, offering sophisticated Asian cuisine made with premium ingredients locally sourced and imported daily from places like Spain and Japan. But just as unique as Aja 30A’s cuisine experience is the story behind its creation.

“In a region of the Florida Panhandle known as South Walton. There, you will find the chic restaurant—Aja 30A.”

Chef Tom Catherall has had a remarkable culinary journey, gathering diverse cooking experiences from around the world. Originally from Newcastle, England, he is a distinguished Certified Master Chef, a title held by only seventy chefs nationwide. Over nearly three decades, Catherall has built an illustrious career, owning and operating fourteen esteemed restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia. His diverse portfolio included seafood, steak, Spanish tapas, and sushi.

“Every aspect of the restaurant’s ambiance, from the carefully crafted decor and subtle lighting to the impressive feature mural and specially selected art pieces, reflects a commitment to excellence.”

Located less than a mile from 30Avenue and nestled between the New Urbanism communities of Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach, you’ll find the vacation resort village of Seacrest Beach. In the heart of the town center, you can discover Lola Coastal Italian, one of Catherall’s newest culinary concepts. Lola Coastal Italian offers a diverse menu, including pasta, fresh seafood, artisanal pizzas, and more, all served in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. “I only want the best for my patrons, so I use the finest ingredients, source sustainable fish and meats, and support local farmers,” says owner Catherall. This commitment to sustainability and supporting local communities is a key part of Catherall’s ethos. “I prioritize providing accessible dining and value to ensure that customers can enjoy outstanding meals without compromising on quality,” says Catherall.

One of the regular patrons at Lola was David Richard, Sr., a prominent entrepreneur, dealmaker, and aspiring restaurateur who often dined at Lola. After engaging in conversations and food tastings, Catherall surprised his new friend with a bowl of gumbo. Richard, a New Orleans native with a discerning palate for the dish, was so impressed that he

wanted to discuss food further. Eventually, the conversation turned to the lack of high-quality sushi in the area. Catherall and Richard recognized the need for top-tier establishments offering high-grade fish, premium ingredients, and expertly paired beverages. They decided to work together to create a new premier sushi destination for the area. When it was time to name the new venture, they chose the name “Aja” (pronounced “Asia”), which was inspired by one of Catherall’s former renowned Atlanta establishments and the Steely Dan album released in 1977.

Richard reflects on their decision to launch the joint venture, stating, “I’ve met so many wonderful people in this community, and I’m thrilled to be part of something that adds a missing element to such a great place alongside a world-class chef.”

Catherall, who has traveled extensively across Asia and has firsthand experience with authentic Asian cuisine, brings unparalleled expertise to the restaurant. Richard

“His international background and culinary mastery bring a rare level of sophistication and skill to Aja 30A.”

continues, “Chef Catherall’s restaurants are very successful, and many of his loyal Atlanta patrons are excited to enjoy his outstanding dining once again at one of their favorite vacation resort settings. His international background and culinary mastery bring a rare level of sophistication and skill to Aja 30A.”

As the summer draws down, the lively nights of DJs and dancing at Aja 30A might make way for a more relaxed atmosphere. Nevertheless, the restaurant continues to be a popular destination for exceptional dining.”

Hand-rolled sushi rolls are a crowd favorite.

One of the most outstanding aspects of the Aja 30A experience, which has garnered glowing reviews, is its exceptional service. “The team is committed to providing service that impresses guests.” The manager at Aja 30A, who previously worked at a high-end restaurant renowned for its service, is instrumental in setting and maintaining the high standards at Aja 30A while the team strives for seamless coordination.

Chef Catherall values engaging with his guests as a critical element of the Aja 30A experience. “I want to meet my guests,” he says. “We have many regulars, and I aim to exceed their expectations and connect with them personally.” This hands-on approach is how Chef Catherall initially met Richard. Their engaging conversations eventually led to their partnership in owning the restaurant together.

At Aja 30A, no detail is overlooked. The restaurant offers the finest liquor, wine, and champagne displayed behind a sleek bar. Guests can sit at the sushi bar and witness the sushi chefs’ artistry up close. Every element, from the music to the lighting, is meticulously curated to create a unique dining experience. Even the design of the to-go boxes reflects the restaurant’s commitment to luxury and excellence. These thoughtful details are a significant part of what keeps guests returning for more.

Aja 30A has recently expanded into premier catering, offering bespoke event services and more. This expansion allows Aja 30A to bring its unique dining experience to a wider audience, making it an ideal choice for those looking for exceptional catering for their events. “One highlight of our catering options is the

‘Aja Dragon’s Den,’ a dragon-shaped platter featuring nine of our signature rolls,” shares Richard. This visually stunning platter has proven especially popular for in-house catering. In addition, Aja 30A can provide sushi chefs to prepare dishes on-site, enhancing the catering experience with outstanding expertise.

As the summer draws down, the lively nights of DJs and dancing at Aja 30A might make way for a more relaxed atmosphere. Nevertheless, the restaurant continues to be a popular destination for exceptional dining. Despite being open for only two years, Aja 30A has rapidly become a local favorite and a

popular spot for visitors from across the Southeast. While there are plans for Aja 30A to expand to new cities, the present time offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the exceptional ambiance and cuisine that define this unique restaurant. Whether dining in its elegant setting or experiencing its high-end catering options, Aja 30A promises a memorable experience that captivates locals and visitors alike.

NEW MENUS AND CREATIVE CONCEPTS TRANSFORM ONE OF SOUTH WALTON’S FAVORITE RESTAURANTS

Farm & Fire, located in the heart of South Walton on the Choctawhatchee Bay, is bidding farewell to the summer season in the Florida Panhandle.

As the quieter, cooler days of fall approach, this beloved dining spot under Chef Jim Shirley Enterprises (JSE) looks forward to embracing the new season with renewed energy and creativity, showcasing its diverse menu and vibrant atmosphere.

A long-standing cornerstone of the local dining scene, Farm & Fire is renowned for its diverse menu, which includes sushi, pizza, fresh Gulf seafood, inventive craft cocktails, and a rotating selection of seasonal specials. This fall, the restaurant expanded its menu and introduced new concepts and experiences that showcase its team’s dedication to innovative evolution and quality. With such a wide range of options, there’s something for everyone at Farm & Fire, ensuring a satisfying dining experience for all.

Farm & Fire’s current menu and ethos are indirectly inspired by classic Art Nouveau and maximalist artists like Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Jan Toorop. “During a time of significant change, Art Nouveau challenged traditional norms and created a completely new design style, while maximalism became a celebration of abundance, diversity, and indulgence,” explains Madison Shirley, vice president of JSE. “At Farm & Fire, we see no reason why we can’t very literally ‘have our cake and eat it too.’ Steaks, sushi, and pizza may be atypical menu pairings, but our guests would agree with us when we say it’s the variety of options that keeps bringing people back.”

Head Chef Michael Mix, a key figure in establishing The Bay Restaurant—a long-standing JSE restaurant adjacent to Farm & Fire—continues to play a critical role in the company. Chef Jon Kendrick, who also played a crucial role in opening The Bay, joined Chef Mix in this endeavor. Chef Kendrick, previously the sous chef at JSE’s iconic Great Southern Café in Seaside, now serves as the company’s Head of Sushi, overseeing sushi at Farm & Fire, 87 Central Square (the newest addition to the JSE restaurant lineup), and The Bay. Both chefs exemplify dedication and loyalty to the JSE family, having been integral members for many years. This commitment is a testament to JSE’s reputation for nurturing long-term employees who grow with the brand.

The recent menu update at Farm & Fire includes signature steaks, salads, latenight bites, and more.

“The most fulfilling aspect of my time at Farm & Fire is coming in every day and witnessing our team members’ personal and professional growth,” says Chef Mix. “It’s inspiring to see the development of so many individuals who have been with us for a significant amount of time.”

Chef Kendrick agrees, “It’s a fantastic place to work, and many people have grown with the company from the beginning. I love witnessing the passion and dedication that people bring to their roles.”

One of the notable updates to the menu is the addition of high-quality chops and cuts. “We’ve partnered with Buckhead Beef, a brand known for having one of the country’s best dry aging and chophouse programs,” shares Chef Mix. “The product is exceptional—easy to cook and season—and our goal was to offer something that not only meets but exceeds our guests’ expectations. The positive feedback we’ve received has been incredibly encouraging.”

Chef Mix adds, “It’s exciting to introduce a new menu item. Elevating the menu is part of my job as a chef, but the team here really has fun with it!” With the addition of new options, the variety and quality of the Farm & Fire menu are further enhancing its appeal for people of all ages and groups, providing a dining experience that’s both accessible and versatile.

This fall, Farm & Fire introduced “Late Nights at Farm & Fire,” a unique concept filling a gap in the South Walton area, where most establishments close by 9:00 p.m. Their late-night offerings include the regular drink menu, a new seasonal cocktail menu, and an exciting late-night bites menu. The bites feature nostalgic favorites with some tongue-in-cheek names. “These finger foods and the late-night concept were inspired by Kristen Tracey, the general manager,” Chef Kendrick shares.

While late Friday and Saturday nights are now a highlight at Farm & Fire, Sunday mornings are equally appealing with the updated brunch menu. The brunch, running from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offers live music by talented local artists in a concept known as “Beats & Brunch.” The experience draws both locals and visitors every weekend and features beloved menu classics as well as new and exciting creations.

At Farm & Fire, known for its sushi, the team’s dedication to creating new and exciting menu items is evident. The “Sweep the Leg” (hamachi, avocado,

tempura crunch, yellowfin poke, and cilantro) is a reference to the 1980s film The Karate Kid, which the kitchen staff members quote often. Chef Kendrick explains, “We frequently create new sushi rolls with input from our employees and customers. Some of our new rolls are classic favorites we’re excited to add to the menu, while others are more experimental.” He also notes, “Most of the tuna we use comes from Water Street Seafood in Apalachicola, and we import fish from places like Japan and Scotland.”

A critical aspect that makes Farm & Fire so enticing is its rotating seasonal menu, which offers guests a constantly evolving dining experience. By regularly updating their offerings with the freshest local ingredients, the restaurant ensures that there is always something new and exciting to try. This approach enables Farm & Fire to showcase seasonal produce and unique discoveries, providing a dining experience that is always fresh and interesting. “If we find something interesting at the farmers’ market or a new ingredient, we’ll feature it in our specials. It’s a great way to keep our menu fresh and interesting,” Chef Mix explains.

Farm & Fire’s real magic comes from the dedicated people who bring the restaurant to life. From the front-of-house staff to the chefs, everyone plays a vital role in creating the welcoming atmosphere that guests have come to know and love, and keep coming back for. With a new chops and cuts menu, updated sushi, brunch, and seasonal cocktail options, all layered on top of their rotating seasonal menu, Farm & Fire truly stands out as the place to be!

Destination Cosmos: The Immersive Space Exhibit at Hall des Lumières in New York City in August 2024 began by leading visitors into a dark hall that transformed into a stunning starry sky with emerging constellations, bringing to life the ancient human dream of space exploration. The exhibition progressed through a series of ancient illustrations before moving into “The Space Race: Destination Moon.” Here, visitors explored the historic achievements of Yuri Gagarin’s first crewed space flights and NASA’s Apollo missions of the 1960s. This exhibition also recreated Neil Armstrong’s historic moon landing, allowing visitors to experience his iconic words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” and the excitement of space exploration’s pivotal moments through larger-than-life projection art.

Making It Happen in the Magic City

THE HEAT IS ON IN MIAMI

ome cities just hit differently, and Miami is known for its unique point of view, blazing hot sense of style, and taste for the finer things in life. While its downtown districts have seen tremendous growth and revitalization over the past several years, Miami Beach has kept up its reputation as a go-to spot for great dining and entertainment. As the VIE team explored the Magic City during 2024 Miami Swim Week, we realized there was much more than fashion to take in during our stay.

A midday arrival brought us to the artsy Wynwood District, famous for its street-art adorned walls, fences, and storefronts. Vintage shops and high-end retailers coalesce here, where a casual stroll will take visitors past the Wynwood Marketplace, the Balloon Museum, numerous incredible eateries and clubs (see this guide’s dining section for more), and, of course, eye-catching artwork painted on nearly every exterior surface. Even the sidewalks are festooned with motivational phrases and doodles that’ll have your gaze drifting downward.

Below and opposite: High-end designer clothing, home, and jewelry boutiques abound in the stylish and architecturally beautiful Miami Design District, including Tiffany & Co., Brunello Cucinelli, Palm Angels, and so much more.

After a coffee break and some wandering, we ventured downtown. New life has been breathed into the area alongside Biscayne Bay, with views of the Atlantic beyond the bustling barrier islands. Numerous drivers and shop owners were excited to share that Downtown Miami has been on the up and up, with a plethora of high-end retailers, luxury accommodations, entertainment venues, and cultural centers marking it as the place to be for those who want to stay in the heart of the city. The Elser Hotel offers incredible 360-degree views and a uniquely local feel with apartmentstyle suites and studios. The hotel is a short walk from attractions such as the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Kaseya Center Arena (home of the Miami Heat), Bayfront Park, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, HistoryMiami Museum, and so much more.

If it’s luxury shopping you crave, take a jaunt to the newly expanded Miami Design District, where global high-end brands meet Magic City artistic flair. Here, you’ll find everything fashion and style, from the brand-new Jimmy Choo store to Cult Gaia, Coach, Gucci, Prada, Golden Goose, Tory Burch, Bottega Veneta, Reformation, Zimmermann, Alice + Olivia, PatBO, AMI Paris, Dior, Christian Louboutin, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, and so much more. If you’re shopping for your home, they’ve got that covered too—showrooms include Armani/Casa, Holly Hunt, Jonathan Adler, Fendi Casa, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Bosch, and Thermador, to name a fair few. Jewelry abounds at Tiffany, Harry Winston, Rolex, TagHeuer, Van Cleef & Arpels, and many other designer shops. Did we mention the stores themselves are works of art? Each has been delicately crafted to reflect the brand’s aesthetic and the Miami Design District’s unmatched

sense of style. A few of our favorites included the stunning Cult Gaia gallery, the light and airy PatBO boutique, and the beautiful new Veronica Beard.

A hop, skip, and jump (okay, a short drive across the bridge) to Miami Beach will immerse visitors in that classic Miami look and feel, where art deco architecture meets Florida sunshine and pastel hues. You can’t pass up a walk along Ocean Drive. The Atlantic waves and colorful lifeguard towers will beckon you to South Beach or Lummus Park, but the city’s most iconic stops also await in this part of town. Marvel at the classic architecture of The Carlyle, the Fountainbleu, and the Park Central buildings for a look at the 1920s and ’30s grandeur. Take a tour past the Versace Mansion (now the The Villa Casa Casuarina boutique hotel) and see where the infamous murder of Gianni Versace occurred. A stroll down Lincoln Road brings yet more shopping opportunities. However, you might want to take a detour to experience the beautiful Miami Botanical Garden or even catch an outdoor movie at Soundscape Park. Dining in Miami Beach is not to be missed, which you’ll soon see in our lineup of must-try foodie hot spots.

Of course, any trip to Miami would be incomplete without time spent outdoors enjoying the incredible beaches, parks, and wildlife South Florida offers. A

short drive south is worth it to visit Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a 1914 historic estate full of sculptures and elaborate interiors, surrounded by lush plant life. Zoo Miami offers a perfect outing for the whole family, along with the Miami Seaquarium—but if it’s natural Florida wildlife you’re after, a short trip outside the city brings tourists to the famous Everglades National Park. Boat or hike among the wetlands for the opportunity to encounter natives such as the American alligator, Florida panther, West Indian manatee, roseate spoonbill, and many more.

A more luxurious chance to embrace the great outdoors awaits courtesy of many local cruise charters, such as Residence Yacht Club, offering everything from three-hour party excursions to sunset dinners. Or, spend the day lounging by the water in style at beach clubs like the newly opened CASA NEOS on the Miami River, a refined architectural sanctuary boasting the MM Beach Club, a Mediterranean restaurant, a boutique hotel, and the NOORA Rooftop Lounge. When people talk about the lap of luxury, this is what they mean!

Dining in Style

Miami is an epicenter of gastronomic creativity—an amalgamation of cultures, flavors, and unparalleled culinary repertoires. We discovered (dare we say) some of the best restaurants in the city, ranging from Michelin star-studded venues to our favorite corner cafés serving organic açai bowls and iced coffees in true South Florida fashion. We’re dishing out our insider tips on what to order and the bestkept epicurean secrets. Add these restaurants to your itinerary during your next Miami getaway!

MILA

MILA is the mood. Imagine an effortlessly chic, indoor-outdoor ambiance that looks like a classy restaurant in Ibiza or Mallorca, with sleek water features, Cycladic design elements, and thatched hanging lights. The kitchen is headed by twenty-six-time Michelin-awarded Chef Michaël Michaelidis and Corporate Chef Joshua Walls, who take guests on a culinary odyssey with captivating dishes izakaya style—meaning shared at the table in good company, with extravagant side table preparations. You simply can’t visit Miami without making a reservation at MILA. It’s a full-sensory experience of zest, beautifully plated Mediterranean and Japanese-inspired dishes, and impeccable service.

We started our meal with MILA’s twist on a paloma and delicious zero-proof cocktails before enjoying an incredible amuse-bouche of fresh tuna. Other highlights included freshly blended edamame hummus topped with wasabi peas, drool-worthy dumplings, grilled octopus, and roasted cauliflower with a heavenly tahini dressing. To complete the tasting extravaganza, we savored a Japanese strawberry cheesecake and orange blossom olive oil cake, which solidified that MILA’s pastries are just as top-tier as the rest of the menu.

Miami

Sweetly situated in the ground floor courtyard of Soho Beach House, Cecconi’s Miami serves up authentic Italian dishes under the guidance of celebrated executive chef Sergio Sigala. Twinkling lights weave through the overhead arbor,

creating a magical ambience that transports you to the romance of European summer nights. The restaurant concept originated in Venice and has since expanded to outposts in London, West Hollywood, Berlin, Barcelona, Istanbul, and Brooklyn. All dishes are Venetian-inspired and ideal for creating a shareable table spread. We recommend ordering the truffle, goat cheese, and zucchini blossom wood-oven pizza and the whipped ricotta with truffle honey. Plus, an insider tip for the ladies: the women’s powder room has the best full-length selfie mirror and blush vintage wallpaper!

PLANTA

This is not your average vegan restaurant. PLANTA is the “it” destination in South Beach to enjoy plant-based renditions of your favorite dishes, sure to satisfy even those weary of a menu without animal products. We were obsessed from the first bite. For sushi lovers, sample the dragon roll, which spotlights tempura broccoli, spinach, avocado, and spicy unagi sauce. The bao sliders were another immediate hit, starring chick’n fried mushrooms, hoisin, and pickled cucumber neatly tucked within the cloud-like steamed dough. We all shared the vodka pizza to conclude the meal, which was expertly topped with tomato cream, cashew mozzarella, basil pesto, and chili bomba. No crumbs were left behind. Each item is easily shareable, and the restaurant is steps from some of the best shopping and hotels in South Beach.

Fabel

Fabel is a dream—or should we say a fairy tale? This is the ultimate brunch destination, set in the Wynwood Art District on the rooftop of Wynwood Jungle. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another world after entering through a whimsical walkway of lights and foliage and walking up the hand-painted staircase. Here, enchantment comes first. Modeling a high-energy experience similar to Scorpios Beach Club in Mykonos or Bagatelle in Saint-Tropez, Fabel invites you to dance your heart out and let your inner child run wild while enjoying world-class dishes that delight the taste buds. You must order the Mariposa Immersion cocktail, which is prepared tableside. Our server, Christopher, expertly spritzed the glass with aromatic lemongrass before mixing the butterfly pea tea into the grapefruit and rose Ketel One mix, turning the drink a vibrant shade of purple. Other favorites included the cobia crudo, hummus, and beet salad. We can’t wait to return and enjoy another chapter of the Fabel experience!

If Pura Vida Miami had a fan club, we would be part of it. We will shamelessly admit that we went to Pura Vida twice during our short three-day escapade to Miami, falling in love at first bite. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Omer and Jennifer Horev, Pura Vida is the wellness destination offering delectable breakfast and lunch offerings made from the highest-quality ingredients. Each café is bright and inviting, tastefully styled with fringed umbrellas and comfortable seating areas that exude coastal elegance. Order the raw açai bowls topped with your favorite tropical fruits and granolas, and explore the extensive lunch menu for satisfying bowls, salads, and wraps. (Don’t forget the coffee!) We love this option for families and groups of friends.

ON THE

Paradise Awaits Island of Kaua’i

AN UNRIVALED WELLNESS JOURNEY

The anfractuous road ahead of me is the island’s welcoming salute. It twists to offer a wink of the shimmering sea below before veering left towards the final property on Princeville’s peninsula. A brief exchange at the gates leads me to my final destination, just beyond the lush greenery and signature 1 Hotel emblem.

My car door is opened by the smiling faces of gracious staff, offering the second official welcome to the island of Kaua’i. A kukui nut lei is draped around my neck as a warm gesture of peace, protection, and guidance before I am led through the open-air reception. Sweeping views of Hanalei Bay and Makana Mountain unfold through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, with numerous outdoor terraces and pools to take in the seascape. It’s a meditative experience that pulled me in time and time again throughout my stay: a raw, human fascination with the natural beauty of the elements.

The 1 Hotels Brand is recognized worldwide for prioritizing sustainability while providing luxury amenities and finishes. After acquiring the 252-room St. Regis Princeville Resort in 2018, the brand invested over $300 million into a five-year gut renovation of the property. Recently opened in February 2023, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay seamlessly blends into the natural surroundings with open-concept living spaces, neutral color palettes, and thoughtful biophilic design principles.

“THE 1 HOTELS BRAND IS RECOGNIZED WORLDWIDE FOR PRIORITIZING SUSTAINABILITY

WHILE PROVIDING LUXURY AMENITIES AND FINISHES.”

Departing from the dated 1970s architecture of other hotels in the area, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay seeks to prioritize the success of the local community while preserving the lush flora and fauna of the Garden Isle. While Hawaii comprises 137 different islands, Kaua’i is the eldest of its five major island siblings: the island of Hawai’i (“The Big Island”), O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lāna’i, and Maui.

The eighth-floor infinity pool is a sleek refuge between the sea and the heavens. Float in style as you gaze at the distant waves.

Globally recognized interior designer Nicole Hollis mindfully curated each of the 252 guest rooms and community spaces in a minimalistic style that pays homage to the Hawaiian people. Hollis and her team selected Kaua’i-sourced elements like basalt and puka lava stone while supporting local artisans in creating custom textiles and ceramics for each room.

My oceanview terrace suite was absolute heaven. A sliding door opened onto the private outdoor seating area overlooking Hanalei Bay, where keen eyes may witness a fleeting rainbow in the distant island rainfall. This quickly became one of my favorite aspects of my stay: lounging on the chaise with a book or cold-pressed juice from Anatomy (the hotel’s fitness complex), watching the surfers dip over the waves in the distance.

Every room is finished with sustainably sourced bedding, cotton slippers and robes, and signature bath products designed in the hotel’s award-winning holistic spa. But the most unexpected surprise was the plethora of biohacking tools stationed throughout my room for ultimate renewal and vitality, alongside

beautiful amethyst and quartz crystals. Exclusive partnerships with leading wellness brands like HigherDOSE and Theragun allow guests to elevate their health with cutting-edge red light face masks, PEMF crystal mats, meditation cushions, percussion massagers, compression recovery boots, weighted blankets, white noise machines, and more. I found myself reaching for these tools each night, whether to optimize sleep for the night ahead or to aid in the recovery of sore muscles after a day of hiking or one of the hotel’s on-site workout classes.

This overarching theme of wellness shines through dozens of thoughtful details throughout my stay, thanks to the newly pioneered Within Wellbeing program at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. On-staff health experts will curate

a personal Journey for your unique needs and goals, fulfilled by the talented practitioners, board-certified physicians, chefs, and trainers across the property. Aligned with the hotel’s greater intention of healing through nature, the ethos of the Within Wellbeing is to allow nature to be your guide, taking you outdoors so you can connect inwards.

Your Journey may include cooking classes (check out my interview with Chef Hollan Goewey, who offers bespoke plant-based cooking classes for guests, in VIE’s April 2024 – Culinary Issue), a farm tour at Kaua’i Farmacy, personal training with an Anatomy “Body Architect,” guided hiking or surfing excursions, private restorative pilates or yoga classes, and personalized treatments at the award-winning Bamford Spa.

The Bamford Spa is the epicenter of revitalization, offering organic, sustainable, and locally-sourced products for an exceptional guest experience. The 18,000 square foot space is equipped with some of the most advanced touchless therapies in the world for ultimate renewal, including a zero-gravity ocean float room (known to improve sleep, focus, anxiety, and recovery time), hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a Somadome meditation pod, and both infrared and steam saunas.

Many spa services are designed around native plants and crops sustainably harvested and grown by local farmers. The Ali’i Honey Steam Wrap spotlights medicinal honey from the Kaua’i Bee Team to reduce stress and inflammation in the body. These local honeybees pollinate some of the rarest flowers on earth, leading to honey divinely infused with the island’s ancient medicine.

Other highlights of my wellness-focused stay included daily fitness classes at Anatomy, the 10,000-square-foot gym. Offering a proprietary program designed by leading sports scientists and fitness experts, each class focuses on a dynamic range of movement that focuses on strength conditioning, muscle regeneration, and recovery. The hotel also has a “Jungle Gym“ by the private beach, crafted entirely from invasive Albizia wood, for those who prefer to work outdoors.

No matter your desires, the Within Wellness program will ensure an unforgettable experience that serves the body, mind, and spirit.

alton County offers much more than beaches. It is home to springs, rivers, lakes, and some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Northwest Florida. A wide variety of aquatic adventures await just above the Choctawhatchee Bay in Authentic Walton.

Encompassing Freeport, Paxton, and DeFuniak Springs, these communities are filled with incredible historic treasures and pastoral landscapes. Every experience here feels genuine, with a friendly vibe that makes all visitors feel welcome.

Outdoor adventure is a way of life in Freeport, and it’s all centered around the Choctawhatchee Bay. Stretching about thirty miles from end to end and between four to six miles across at any given point, Choctawhatchee Bay is ideal for boating, fishing, paddleboarding, and swimming. The shores are lined with parks and green spaces for enjoying a picnic or just enjoying the view. Explore one of forty homes on the National Register of Historic Places or visit the time-honored Chautauqua Institution for a taste of old DeFuniak. But it’s not just about heritage – the lake is also a dynamic hub for more modern community events, like the annual Sprint Triathlon and recreational LakeFest.

Located just east of DeFuniak Springs in Walton County, Morrison Springs is a diver’s paradise. Acquired by the state of Florida in 2004, it has become one of the most popular diving sites in the Southeast, drawing visitors from across the nation.

You’ll find the quiet little town of Paxton at the northernmost edge of the county amid the pastoral beauty of rolling pastures and woodland areas. Paxton is nestled right against Lake Jackson, which straddles the Florida-Alabama line, providing an ideal outlet for leisure time and nature appreciation. Perhaps the best way to fully enjoy the lake is by getting out on the water. Bring a canoe or kayak to paddle around in search of local wildlife.

MIAMI SWIM WEEK SIZZLES

ON THE CATWALK

Welcome to Miami!

Earlier this summer, a few members of the VIE team—Jordan Staggs, Kelly Curry, and Hailey Bethke—explored the Magic City just in time for the twentieth anniversary of Miami Swim Week. We entered the PARAISO Tent at Collins Park each evening for exceptional runway shows from some of the industry’s most established designers and promising emerging talents. Beyond the glamour is shared camaraderie for self-expression, art, and culture. A true celebration of creativity and the power of women, this weekend in the heart of South Beach was one for the books.

One of our favorite shows was the 2025 Resort Collection by Leslie Amon, featuring flowy silhouettes, earth tones, and seashell detailing. Amon’s designs are influenced by her Egyptian and Swiss roots and inspired by the natural beauty of land and sea. As a true swimwear aficionado, she tests each piece dry and wet six months before the launch date to ensure perfection and consumer satisfaction.

Sinesia Karol, a Brazilian swimwear line, also launched its 2025 Resort Collection. This line aims to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the female form, encouraging women to embrace their unique qualities and strengths. The brand collaborates with three local Brazilian designers to create the prints for each season, carefully handcrafting each piece in their Brazilian factories. Sinesia Karol’s focus on women’s empowerment and providing a stable income for working mothers is genuinely

THE EVENING CHALLENGED THE TRADITIONAL IDEA THAT MODELS SHOULD ADHERE TO MINIMAL EXPRESSION AND FORWARD FOCUS.

inspiring. The 2025 Resort Collection features elegant, breezy silhouettes, shimmering fabrics, and tropical foliage motifs.

The Cupshe runway show featured the exclusive Cupshe x JoJo Fletcher: Soul Space Collection, designed in collaboration with Joelle “JoJo” Fletcher, the former lead on ABC’s reality television show The Bachelorette. This collection drew inspiration from nature, showcasing animal prints, rich sea-green and lilac hues, and flattering silhouettes. Designed to evoke a sense of tranquility and connection with nature, it featured a variety of styles, including one-pieces, bikinis, and cover-ups. In addition, the Cupshe Swim Week Capsule Collection and Recycled Swimwear Collections displayed vintage-inspired silhouettes and eco-friendly pieces made from repurposed water bottles, recycled nylon or polyester, and yarn

waste. A total of sixty styles was showcased, with appearances by Sports Illustrated models Brooks Nader, Christen Harper, Katie Austin, Cindy Prado, and Joy Corrigan, as well as body-positive model Iskra Lawrence, bionic model Marsha Elle, and breast cancer survivor and former Victoria’s Secret model Christine Handy.

The highly anticipated Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2024 Runway Show occurred at the W Hotel in South Beach to celebrate the brand’s sixtieth anniversary. Over 1,500 influencers and VIP guests gathered around the sleek runway suspended over the ninety-two-foot-long infinity pool. The evening challenged the traditional idea that models should adhere to minimal expression and forward focus, as the models showcased a free-spirited vibe, dancing down the runway and supporting each other, exuding confidence. Notable personalities who walked the runway included digital Sports Illustrated cover star and TikTok influencer Alix Earle, social media sensation Abbie Herbert, and Sports Illustrated 2024 Rookie Xandra Pohl, alongside Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models Achieng Agutu, Brooks Nader, Camille Kostek, Christen Harper, Ellie Thumann, Hunter McGrady, Jena Sims, Kamie Crawford, Katie Austin, Lauren Chan, Nicole Williams English, and Penny Lane.

Before each night’s runway shows, we spent our days exploring the Miami Beach Convention Center at SwimShow and Cabana, two of the most prestigious trade shows in the world for swimwear boutique buyers. We enjoyed conversing with industry experts and up-and-coming swimwear designers to learn about their inspiration and design philosophies.

One of the highlights was a trend-setting seminar featuring the fashion editor and trend forecasting specialist Kendall Becker. During the symposium, Becker discussed how the “Age of Aquarius,” a movement from the 1960s and ’70s associated with ideals of liberation and self-expression, has influenced 2024 swimwear trends. The macro trend indicates a collective shift toward mindfulness, viewing life from a softer perspective, and overall wellness. Today, swimwear designers incorporate progressive Aquarian ideals by emphasizing eclectic forms, innovative cuts, and eco-friendly fabrics. Over the last year, this trend has been evident across industries, with the rise of pilates, the proliferation of inspirational lifestyle content on social media, and a societal shift toward sustainability as a core value.

Here’s an insider tip to stay ahead of the curve in 2025: teal is trending! Regardless of your industry, we encourage you to utilize trend forecasting to harness empowered creativity. Trends aren’t about changing what you love but using culturally relevant moments in an authentic way that resonates with your audience.

Dani Klarić’s Whimsical World

“My style is an unapologetic blend of playful nostalgia and contemporary maximalism, infused with vibrant colors and a lively feel,” said Dani Klarić, an interior designer and artist based in Miami. Her work has gained considerable attention online, as she encourages people to break away from traditional decor and uninspiring contemporary beige styles and instead “mix it up” in their homes. “There’s no single word for what I do because it’s a blend of so many influences that inspire me daily,” she continued. Klarić, a Gen-Z designer and influencer, has amassed an audience of around 2.2 million followers on Instagram and TikTok combined.

“My design approach is experimental yet rooted, creating vibrant and eclectic spaces that skillfully balance the timeless with the trendy in unexpected ways.”

Klarić recently collaborated with the online home decor retailer Desenio to produce a collection of art prints on paper and canvas, all showcasing bold-hued critters, furnishings, and more. We were excited to hear her thoughts on this collection, her inspirations, and what’s next!

VIE: “Where do you find inspiration for your creative work and projects?”

Dani Klarić: I draw most of my inspiration from the world around me. It might sound cheesy, but I surround myself with people, cultures, and cities that inspire me creatively. I’m also a bit addicted to scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram—small artists and designers are where it’s at online. Nature is another big muse for me; there’s nothing like soaking in a stunning landscape to fuel fresh ideas. And let’s not forget my art books. I have a vast collection that keeps me inspired in my home every single day.

VIE: Tell us about your creation process, whether for an art piece or designing a space.

DK: My creative process always starts with what my team and I like to call “lookbooks”—essentially giant mood boards filled with inspirational photos, textiles, and color palettes. This is where the magic (and a little bit of madness) begins. From there, we start conceptualizing the layouts and renders, bringing those ideas to life. Lately, I’ve been designing a lot of custom furniture and decor pieces, which have been my favorites. I love pushing my limits and the creative “rules” that don’t exist in my mind because my team and I always love trying the “impossible” in design. My clients are also a significant source of inspiration; I want to capture their vision and push it even further to create something beyond their imagination. But no matter the project, I always start with a mood board.

VIE: How did you partner with Desenio, and what makes this print collection unique?

DK: A few years ago, I teamed up with Desenio for a collaborative post when I first started on social media. That collaboration meant the world to me because

they saw something in me that I hadn’t even discovered yet. They genuinely admired my style. Fast-forward to this year: they reached out with the brilliant idea to collaborate on an art collection. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect match. If you’ve seen my content, you know that I love gallery walls, so partnering with them felt natural. When I first started—decorating my first apartment—I realized how challenging it was to find art that was both affordable and accessible, so creating this collection was a dream come true because Desenio offers such affordable and beautifully framed aesthetic art pieces. What makes this collection truly special is that it reflects my quirky, whimsical style. I believe life shouldn’t be too serious—everything around you should spark joy, and I wanted this collection to capture that spirit.

VIE: What are your favorite designs in this collection?

DK: My main one is the “Have a Seat” poster. It’s a tribute to all the chairs I’ve come to adore. They are chairs I’ve always dreamed of owning, currently own, or have incorporated into my clients’ spaces in past projects. The crocodile poster is also another favorite of mine. The playful, quirky style reflects my love for all things whimsical and perfectly represents my personal style. Art doesn’t always have to be serious—it can be fun, lighthearted, and bring a smile to your face, which is precisely how this poster was born. And my third favorite has to be the dice poster. It’s more of a simple piece. This one goes to my “neutral” people who want to introduce a splash of whimsy and color into their homes. I have this one above my bed; it just adds that extra oomph we missed there.

VIE: How does it feel to see your art hanging in a gallery, public space, or someone’s home?

DK: Seeing my art hanging in public spaces and people’s homes feels unreal—it makes me so incredibly happy! It’s a dream come true to watch something that once only lived in my imagination come to life and then see it take on its own meaning in someone else’s space. Seeing everyone’s posts and my friends’ homes with this collection means the world to me. It’s incredible to see how many people are embracing this whimsical, playful style; I am thrilled to see color and whimsy making a comeback and feel so grateful to be part of that movement!

VIE: As an interior designer, how much of what you do reflects your style as opposed to your clients’?

DK: That’s a tough one! Most of my clients choose me because they resonate with my style, which is so unique, but it doesn’t mean they want precisely my

style. And that’s fine—I love the challenge! Every project is different, but I feel like each one carries a piece of me, even if my own home doesn’t mirror the spaces I design for others. Those spaces are still very much a reflection of who I am. Clients come to my team looking for something unique, infused with that joyful vibe I bring to the table, whether it’s a colorful maximalist home or a sleek, neutral minimalist space. They’re drawn to the distinctiveness of our past projects and are eager to see how I can sprinkle my magic into their vision. That’s what makes design so much fun—I get to push boundaries and explore just what I’m capable of. I like to think each of my projects looks distinct, yet they all share the same touch of magic.

“I believe life shouldn’t be too serious—everything around you should spark joy, and I wanted this collection to capture that spirit.”

VIE: In recent years, you have gained significant traction on social media. What is it like to balance your business and influencer status?

DK: I feel so lucky to have centered my content around home decor—now my business seamlessly blends with being a content creator. I get to share everything about home, design, and my creative processes, making it easy to keep the content fresh and engaging. I also run a vintage clothing store in Miami, and even though it’s a different world, I believe fashion and decor go hand in hand. If you love interior design, you’ve got to love fashion too—it’s just like styling your space but on your body! Peachtree (my store) also shares that playful, whimsical side of me, which I believe my audience loves to watch. I see social media as a platform to showcase my art and inspire others, as I genuinely appreciate all the creators who do the same and keep me inspired.

VIE: What are the biggest challenges you face daily?

DK: Time is my biggest challenge—there’s never enough time to bring all my ideas to life! Balancing so many creative directions can be tricky, mainly because I want to do everything at once. I’m learning that each thing has its own timeline, and I’ll get to everything I want to do, one step at a time. As long as I give it my all, pour my heart and soul into it, and stay patient, everything will work out as it’s meant to. I also tend to procrastinate a lot because there is just so much I want to do—but again, I’m working on it!

VIE: What is your favorite part about what you do?

DK: My favorite part is bringing ideas to life—transforming my clients’ visions into reality. Whether it’s their dream home or a commercial space, curating a space they’ve always imagined feels like making their dreams come true. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing the smile on our clients’ faces when they see their new space. It’s incredibly inspiring. Most of our clients are new homeowners or small business owners whose passion and vision are truly motivating. There’s always that moment when I stand in a completed space and think, “Wow, we really did this, and it all started with just an idea. And now, our client has their dream home they can settle into or a store where they can grow.” It is such a magical feeling.

VIE: What do you believe makes art essential to the world, to individuals, and to you personally?

DK: Art is crucial because it transcends boundaries and connects people on a more profound and emotional level. For me, it’s a source of personal expression, inspiration, and solace, offering a way to communicate my feelings and ideas that words might not capture. Art is a vital outlet for creativity and joy; it’s where I explore my imagination, push boundaries, and find fulfillment. It turns ideas into experiences, enriches our surroundings, and makes life more vibrant and meaningful, which is why I do what I do!

VIE: Are there other artists and designers you admire and recommend our readers check out?

DK: David Hockney was one of the first artists to inspire me to pursue an art career. His work is so colorful and playful, which is precisely the style I love. Kelly Wearstler is one of the most amazing interior designers of our time; how she uses textures and patterns will forever inspire me. Luis Barragan is a famous Mexican architect—Barragan has been my dad’s inspiration since he was young, so I grew up seeing his work everywhere and touring the spaces he designed. I have grown to love every single space Barragan has ever designed. He is the epitome of the colorful Mexican aesthetic, which is such a beautiful style, and I hope to own a house in this style one day. And finally, I love Eero Saarinen, one of the most iconic architects and industrial designers of his time. He made quite a few furniture pieces that, to this day, are very popular and desired. He is the king of what we call “retrofuturism” design.

VIE: What’s next? Are there any new collections, events, or collaborations on the horizon?

DK: I recently launched my design firm, Euphoria Collective, with my business partner, Lainie, and I’ve been focusing on that since the beginning of the year. We’ve completed three projects thus far this year and have four more in the works, including an exciting one overseas in Kuwait. I’ll leave it at that for now, but it’s going to be wild!

I have yet to announce it, but I’m working on launching my own decor line under Euphoria, and I just bought a kiln so we can create our first handmade designs! Additionally, I recently bought a house with my boyfriend, Bello, and we’ve been having a blast de-modernizing it. I’m also hoping to buy a vacation property to design and create a total experience for my audience to stay in, which has always been a dream of mine.

I am also working on “e-guides” for those looking for interior design guidance for their space but don’t have the means to hire my team and me to design it fully. This one is really exciting; since I started designing, I have wanted to find a way to make design affordable for everyone, so the guides will have all kinds of tips and tricks for different budgets on curating a beautiful space inspired by my style. Stay tuned for that!

Thank you, Dani!

ichael Carey embarked on his construction journey while in high school, balancing house cleaning before and after school hours. Even though he initially pursued a career in law enforcement, his passion was always in construction. After getting his builder’s license, he started building homes in Birmingham and Gulf Shores, Alabama. His affection for the area grew, leading him to renovate and furnish local condominiums. In a short period, this new venture led him into exploring the diverse furniture industry.

In the early 2000s, Carey’s passion for furniture continued to grow. “I got to know a furniture shop owner and began buying pieces for my condos. It was an exciting time—the furniture market was really taking off,” he remembers. Despite the booming market, the 2008 economic downturn presented a significant challenge. However, Carey saw his opportunity to penetrate the furniture industry. “When the chance to lease a building came up, I knew it was now or never for me to expand my furniture business. I didn’t have a formal business plan; I just dove in and launched Encore Home, the parent company of what is now Stock & Trade Design Co.,” he explains.

Carey’s early days with Stock & Trade were a testament to his determination. He began attending antique auctions, often on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings,

sourcing pieces to paint and distress, aligning with the shabby chic trend of the time. “Family and friends volunteered to help me get started, but I was running the business with no paid employees,” he recalls. Working nights as a police officer, Carey would work from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., then take a nap before diving back into the furniture business. “Some of the guys at work didn’t even know what I was doing on the side. It was a grueling schedule, but I made it work.”

Around 2012, Carey began planning a major expansion for Stock & Trade. He wanted to establish a more prominent presence and sought a strategic location capable of future growth. To gauge the market potential, Carey leased a building on Highway 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. His approach was meticulous; he printed out every property tax record from Destin to Panama City and scrutinized land listings. “I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice, so I researched every possible option,” Carey recalls. Initially, he acquired only a few acres, but as he developed a clearer picture of his needs, it became evident that the space was insufficient for his ambitions. “We realized that the initial vision wouldn’t fit with the master plan we had in mind. So, we scrapped the original plan for Stock & Trade and began anew,” Carey says.

Today, Stock & Trade Design Co. has grown into a prominent establishment with five galleries across the Southeast. This includes a sizeable 75,000-square-foot showroom in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. The expansive showroom features a wide selection of furniture for home, office, and outdoor living and a great selection of lighting, decor, and art pieces. It is located within The District, Carey’s luxury shopping center, which offers several retail stores, a brewery, a salon and fitness studio, and professionally decorated residential apartments.

“Today, Stock & Trade Design Co. has grown into a prominent establishment with five galleries across the Southeast. This includes a sizeable 75,000-square-foot showroom in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.”

The showroom also features the European-inspired Stock & Brew Café. Renowned for its excellent coffee, delicious pastry treats, and savory bites, this café is a favorite among local shoppers and visitors. With beautiful décor, it offers a cozy atmosphere, making it an inviting spot for relaxation.

Next to The District and Stock & Trade, there is land designated for the future of Harlan’s Place. Carey’s son, Harlan, was born with Down syndrome. “Our journey began with a simple yet profound desire: to ensure that Harlan can lead an independent life in an environment that offers opportunities not unlike those available to individuals without disabilities. As parents, our dreams for Harlan extend far beyond the boundaries that society sometimes places on those with differing abilities,” Carey shares. “We imagine a place where Harlan and others like him can flourish, make choices, and experience the richness of life in a setting that respects their unique strengths and aspirations.” It was with this intuitive understanding that Harlan’s journey towards independence required thoughtful planning and support, in which Harlan’s Place Foundation was established.

The original plan for an apartment complex on the grounds was changed and transformed into a housing and care facility that exceeds traditional notions of disability care. “Our goal is to create communities where individuals like Harlan can flourish and form meaningful connections.” Stock & Trade has proudly supported events benefiting Harlan’s Place Foundation.

Since its inception, Stock & Trade has grown into a full-service interior design firm, collaborating with over two hundred top vendors to provide design solutions that accommodate any budget or style. According to Carey, Stock & Trade’s in-stock pieces are readily available for immediate purchase directly from the gallery floor, making it an ideal resource for designers and homeowners needing furnishings without the typical long lead times associated with custom orders. The company actively engages in the local community to boost regional awareness, providing special sales programs for realtors and designers. With access to thousands of special-order and custom options, Stock & Trade offers virtually limitless design possibilities.

With clear goals, numerous sacrifices, hard work, and now a highly talented team, Carey has built an empire in the furniture business that goes beyond just selling furniture. It serves as a center of inspiration and creativity, reflecting the passion that has led to its success. It stands as a beacon for those looking to revamp their homes, spaces, and lives, embodying the spirit and artistry of design.

Since Seaside, Florida’s inception, cofounder and visionary Daryl Rose Davis has nurtured and refined the idea of the Seaside style, extending it from the choice of signature colors to interior design and clothing.

Her stores epitomize this idea. It’s the luxury of simplicity. The comfortable elegance of cotton sundresses and sun-bleached straw hats. Screened porches and white picket fences. The taste of fresh

crabs caught at the water’s edge. This is The Seaside Style®. Now an adjective for architecture, interior design, fashion, and food, The Seaside Style® is about more than design. It is a way of life.

“In 1992, Robert decided he did not want to be in the retail business and sold me L.Pizitz for one dollar,” Daryl says, referring to her husband and town cofounder/visionary, Robert S. Davis. “I incorporated it into my Seaside Associated Stores (SAS) corporation, and I was now the owner of two boutique businesses in Seaside, with Per•spi•cas•ity being the first. Erica came to work with me as the general manager of SAS. Over the following thirty years, we opened many businesses in Seaside to seed the community and create excitement and energy. We had Sue Vaneers, Papyrus, 4Kids, Seaside Transit Authority, Pedals and Petals, and Sue Vaneers Express.”

Some of the businesses worked, and some were too early for their time. The visionaries focused on the ones that were working by fine-tuning them many times over the years.

“Today, visitors travel to Seaside to purchase merchandise bearing the simple logo that Daryl first drafted back in 1981.”

“Erica Pierce and I worked extremely well together,” Daryl continues. “We were both creative in complementary ways, and she was able to take my ideas and bring them to fruition. She had great people skills, and we saw eye to eye on the company’s ethos. I wanted SAS to be a place where I could empower women to learn about business by teaching them different skill sets. I wanted them to be able to support themselves and their families, feel good about themselves and their accomplishments, and be able to put money aside for a rainy day. Paying a fair wage was always important to me, as was rewarding accomplishments.”

Today, visitors travel to Seaside to purchase merchandise bearing the simple logo that Daryl first drafted back in 1981. How did that fated staff T-shirt grow into such an icon and widely coveted lifestyle collection?

A collage of photos, town memorabilia, and philosophies from Seaside’s first decade. See more in TheSeasideStyle® coffee-table book!

The Seaside Style® Is Born

“Merchandising the sixty-four-square-foot Per•spi•cas•ity huts was always a nightmare due to the challenges of limited space,” Daryl says. “We set up tables and benches and brought merchandise out into the courtyard but were still limited by the weather and humidity. The Florida sunshine was brutal on the clothes, and the only way to ensure they remained in good condition was to sell them quickly.”

It was Erica who first thought of displaying the merchandise of Per•spi•cas•ity and fixtures of L.Pizitz and the other Seaside Associated Stores in alignment with each other, bringing them closer through a cohesive look even though they remained separate retail outlets. This tightening of look and feel across all SAS retailers further cemented the town itself as not only a look but a lifestyle.

“Erica was onto something by bringing all five of the businesses I owned at the time under one umbrella,” says Daryl. “That collective became known as The Seaside Style®. It was a brilliant idea of hers, and it is the moniker we still use.”

While the local housing market was growing, Seaside logo merchandise became sought-after commodities for the thousands who visited the town each year. Sue Vaneers grew up and became known as Seaside Classic, the home of the original “new town, old ways” T-shirt. But as shoppers created more demand for new Seaside items, the collection further evolved into The Seaside Style® as it is known today.

In 2017, Pizitz Home & Cottage merged with Seaside Classic into The Seaside Style® flagship store. The new concept features the “best of the best” from each of the former stores, fulfilling a longtime vision for Daryl. “We know that Seaside

We know that Seaside inspires our guests in all aspects of life.

inspires our guests in all aspects of life,” she reflects. “Everyone who experiences our town becomes a ‘Seasider’ for life. Not only do our visitors want to dress the part, but they also want to live the part, even after they return home.” This perfectly reflects the ethos of The Seaside Style® and the town of Seaside.

Still, the SEASIDE® logo T-shirt hit its stride as a bestseller from the start, and it only skyrocketed from there. Today, many visitors can’t leave town without a T-shirt, sweatshirt, or baseball cap from The Seaside Style® or one of its associated stores. Whether tourists are heading back to Alabama or Alberta, Canada, the T-shirt is a souvenir of the good times they had. But it’s more than just a reminder and has become popular among all ages—even children under ten seem to know and appreciate that there’s something undeniably cool about the simple, timeless, classic style. Recognizing a fellow Seasider outside Northwest Florida by their emblazoned apparel lends to a special bond and camaraderie that has elevated the Seaside lifestyle to something more.

n 2016, after opening their third art gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, Gary Handler and his wife decided to take a quick trip to the Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach, Florida, to relax and rejuvenate. They had always dreamed of living by the beach, and little did they know that this trip would turn their dream into a reality.

During the trip, Handler came across the art gallery Curate 30a in the Rosemary Beach town center, where he met the owner, Justin Gaffrey. The opportunity to move to the beach unexpectedly arose when Gaffrey explained that he was leaving to focus on his personal gallery down the road in Blue Mountain, leaving the gallery in search of a new owner. Shortly following this fateful meeting, Handler found himself as the new owner of Curate 30a, making it his fourth art gallery.

VIE: What led you to become involved in the art industry in the first place? Was there a particular time frame when you discovered your passion?

Gary Handler: After graduating from Auburn University, where I played on the golf team, I encountered severe back issues that required two major surgeries. Following my recovery, my dad wisely advised me not to rush into a full-time career until I had fully recuperated. I took his advice and landed a part-time job at an art gallery, and from day one, I fell in love with the business. Despite having no prior art experience or training, my passion for it led me to quickly dive in and learn all about it.

I worked at a gallery for three years until it unfortunately closed. After that, I started a home-based fine art consulting business while waiting for the right opportunity to open my first gallery in 1999. Soon after, I opened my second gallery in 2012. In 2016, I opened a third gallery, followed by the quick succession of our fourth location, the Curate 30a gallery in Rosemary Beach.

VIE: What are some of your favorite works in Curate 30a? What are some works/artists you hope to incorporate in the gallery?

GH: This is a difficult question because I genuinely love all the artists we represent in the gallery. When we first opened, I displayed my “best of” from the Atlanta galleries on the walls of Curate. However, I soon recognized that our clients were looking for artwork that reminded them of the beautiful beaches of 30A and our area. The realization led me to shift my focus regarding the artists we represented. We promptly brought in a few nationally recognized artists and invited them to Curate to take in our surroundings and create a collection of pieces for us. The results were outstanding, and the overall theme of the gallery was well on its way. I am very proud of how our clients have responded to these artists and their incredible depictions of our beaches.

Even though several artists paint similar subject matters, each brings a unique perspective. In addition to two or three artists painting beach scenes and seascapes, we introduced some fun artwork that has resonated with our clientele. As the gallery matured, we successfully welcomed a few new abstract artists who have grown in popularity.

VIE: As someone who has been in the art industry for over twenty years, what is your advice for anyone looking to grow their personal art collection?

GH: The first advice I would give is to find a gallery or art dealer that you trust and who understands the type of art you like. Then, educate yourself as much as you can on different styles and mediums. Beyond that, I recommend you trust your decision and not worry about other people’s thoughts. Remember, it’s your home, not your neighbors’ or friends’. Also, avoid getting too wrapped up in the investment value or future appreciation. The most important thing is that the art makes you happy.

VIE: What is your favorite medium of art?

GH: I prefer traditional art for my home and am particularly fond of original oil paintings on canvas. Additionally, I am a big fan of blown glass art, and I have collected several exquisite pieces crafted by talented glass artists to display in my personal space.

VIE: We’d love to know how you select artists and pieces for your gallery. What’s your process like?

GH: I would personally hang in my home any piece of art hanging in the gallery. I have to love the piece of art, and the working relationship I have with the artist is just as meaningful. When considering a new artist, I first ask myself, “Is this something I would hang in my home?”

Over the years, I’ve found that the style of art that resonates with me also resonates with our collectors. It’s a joy to hear clients tell us they like everything in the gallery or things like, “This is the first gallery my wife and I have been in where we are drawn to the same pieces.”

VIE: How frequently do you host art shows and events? Do you have a specific show or event that holds special meaning for you?

GH: We host a variety of shows and events at our gallery throughout the year, adding a vibrant and dynamic element to our space. Most of our featured artists come for a week once a year and stay as our artists in residence. The gallery gets busy during the summer when the season is in full swing. It can be hectic from Memorial Day to mid-July, as we host a new artist weekly. We also make an effort to bring in artists for the major holidays.

VIE: Do you collaborate with interior designers, architects, and other trades? We would love to hear more about this.

GH: Though several local designers use the gallery as a resource, we do not aggressively pursue the design trade, as we love to work directly with the homeowner. However, it’s always great when the interior designer accompanies the homeowner, helping to streamline the selection process.

After a gallery visit, we often find it best to bring five or six pieces to their home, hold them up on the wall, and help them with their selections. It brings so much joy to all the staff and myself when we find the perfect piece for them.

VIE: What was one of your significant achievements in the art world besides having the resilience to continue thriving in a capricious industry?

GH: I am proud of our low turnover with the gallery teams; several employees have been with me since the beginning.

I am also proud of the strong client relationships and friendships we have cultivated here at the Curate 30a gallery over the last eight years. People make it a point to visit the gallery while visiting the area. We see many of the same clients year after year.

But, after 30 years in business, our proudest achievement is our legacy. We survived tough times and gained recognition in industry magazines for our thriving success story.

VIE: What are the benefits of working with an art consultant?

GH: Working with a reputable art consultant offers the significant benefit of knowing that your best interests are a top priority. At Curate 30a, we are a full-service gallery that provides several steps in the purchasing experience. The first and most crucial step is an in-home consultation, where we bring a variety of pieces to our client’s homes and try different options on different walls until we find the perfect fit. Additionally, working with us provides the opportunity for a trade-in policy, which is ideal for first-time collectors. This policy allows collectors to trade up something they previously purchased from us as their collecting experience grows, their preferences evolve, or their budget increases. Lastly, we offer a low-pressure selling environment, eliminating the intimidating feeling often associated with visiting an art gallery. We aim to ensure all visitors feel comfortable and welcome, fostering long-term relationships.

VIE: Besides Ben Boling’s animal works, what are some of the most fun and funky artworks you have showcased?

GH: Undoubtedly, the Anna Sweet Donut collection sparks the most smiles and lively conversations among all our artists’ works. I never imagined I would be selling donuts, but these are truly exceptional, high-quality pieces of art that bring delightful visuals to any home. After all, who doesn’t love donuts, right?

VIE : What are your hopes for the future of Curate 30a?

GH: As an entrepreneur, I’m always open to exploring new avenues for business growth. However, I don’t think I can improve on the location of our existing 30A gallery. But who knows, another beachside location might be in our future!
