A REFLECTION POINT

GOODNESS is ALWAYS a GOOD IDEA

At the time of writing this note, we are two weeks away from knowing who our forty-seventh president of the United States will be. A collective pensiveness is in the air like never before, and it’s palpable for all as the country is at a crossroads of great consequences. There are moments in time that are life-altering, and I believe this is one of them.

We are a divided nation, and a house divided cannot stand. How we reconcile this existential crisis of division is seemingly impossible to me at this moment. We need to do a much better job of remembering that we’re not enemies but rather understand that although each side vehemently disagrees with the other, we are one. I believe part of the reason for such animosity is so much information, misinformation, and propaganda being mixed together to create a recipe for angst, at the very least. There is a deep concern and quest to find absolute truth, or as close as we can to get to it. We are living in an Orwellian climate where it’s hard to know for sure who is telling the truth.

America is a country of innovators, entrepreneurs, thrill seekers, and problem solvers with multiple ethnicities and cultural differences. If the nation is going to survive, we need to have more love, understanding, and empathy for our fellow citizens. Since 1956, the official motto of the United States has been “In God We Trust,” which is still imprinted on our currency and is a legacy of our founders. I don’t proclaim to have all the answers, but I believe that the God I serve does, and I’m praying for America. One of my favorite scriptures is found in Philippians 4:8—“Think about things that are true, clean, right, and lovely.”

It feels like time is moving much faster than ever, and most people I talk to feel the same way, no matter what walk of life they are on. I thought it was just me working in the field of publishing, but it’s not. We all feel it. I read a great book by Oliver Burkeman recently, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals . Its premise is that if we live until at least eighty years of age, we all have four thousand weeks. When you net life down to weeks, it doesn’t sound like very many to me. Many Kindle readers chimed in with this astute take on the book’s ethos: “The real measure of any time management technique is whether or not it helps you neglect the right things.”

Because I feel like we are on the precipice of experiencing something drastically different, which may be good or bad, my current mission is to choose wisely how to spend the rest of my weeks on God’s green earth.

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: HOW DO YOU STAY TRUE TO YOUR AUTHENTIC STYLE? HAS IT CHANGED OVER TIME, OR DO YOU HAVE TIMELESS ELEMENTS THAT REMAIN CENTRAL TO YOUR IDENTITY AS AN ARTIST?

Artist

@morning_glory_inc

I stay true to myself by staying inspired and humble. A good walk on the beach on 30-A is one of my favorite reminders. I also find new atmospheres to be incredibly inspiring. I visited Dublin, Ireland, and a few places in Scotland this year. My style of art has changed over the years. I used to be rigid and cared so much about what others thought. Now, I use art as my pathway to freedom.

I never worried about what the ‘trends’ were. My inspiration comes from so many places: I could look at a building and how the beams are crossing and think of that as a plaid, or design a collection around a trip I took to Ireland. I reference myself a lot, too; there’s been consistency, even from starting out with my first brand, William Reid. We reference our customers: What do they like? What are they looking for? We want to be true to ourselves and our customers, who want something with unique textiles and lines—bold yet wearable, interesting, and something they can wear for years to come.

At Tribe Kelley, staying true to our authentic style has always been about embracing who we are and where we come from. Our brand has deep roots in

nature, music, and the freedom to express individuality, and we keep that spirit alive in everything we create. Over time, while trends come and go, we’ve always maintained timeless elements—like a focus on ethical manufacturing, maximum comfort, and quality craftsmanship. Our style may evolve as we grow and gain new experiences, but at its core, Tribe Kelley continues to reflect our values: celebrating a grounded, intentional lifestyle and pieces that resonate with that authenticity.

I RARELY QUESTION WHETHER I’M STAYING TRUE TO MY AUTHENTIC STYLE. INSTEAD, MY FOCUS IS ON CHANNELING THE ENERGY AND EMOTIONS I GENUINELY FEEL IN THE MOMENT INTO MY WORK.

I rarely question whether I’m staying true to my authentic style. Instead, my focus is on channeling the energy and emotions I genuinely feel in the moment into my work. This connection often resonates with the observer, allowing them to experience the emotion behind each piece.

Roots Run Deep

INSIDE BRIAN AND BRITTNEY KELLEY’S PASSIONATE PURSUIT OF LIFE, LOVE, AND A GOOD OL’ TIME

n a land where the open skies meet endless possibilities, Brian and Brittney Kelley embody the spirit of chasing dreams and living life to the fullest. Brian shines as a country music star with a string of hit songs that resonate deeply with fans, while Brittney weaves her creativity into the fabric of her Tribe Kelley clothing brand. Together, they

are a force of nature, making a mark in their industries while staying true to their roots.

With hearts full of gratitude and a love for the life they’ve built, Brian and Brittney remind us that success isn’t just about reaching new heights—it’s about enjoying the journey and being fully present. We had the pleasure of catching up with this down-to-earth couple to catch a glimpse into their world of country music, fashion, and the joy of living and creating a life they’ve always dreamed of.

INTERVIEW BY MCKENNA MEARS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN CHRISTENSEN
Brian and Brittney Kelley modeling the latest Mossy Oak collaboration print from Tribe Kelley’s Town and Country Collection

VIE: What’s been inspiring you lately, both personally and creatively?

Brittney: The shifts we experienced in 2020 opened our eyes in unexpected ways. Being at home more has inspired me to create pieces that reflect that cozy, homeoriented lifestyle. I’m excited about some upcoming designs that blend comfort with streetwear—pieces you can wear around the house but also feel stylish when you head out.

We’ve been spending time at my family’s farm in Georgia, where I’ve rediscovered my love for camo. It’s incredible how it’s made a comeback in the fashion world, even on runways, and I’ve been drawing inspiration from that. Growing up wearing camo, especially the Mossy Oak patterns, has shaped my style. Collaborating on collections incorporating those patterns has been fulfilling and ties me back to my roots. I never would have thought to explore camo when I started Tribe Kelley, but it’s become a significant part of my inspiration now!

Brian Kelley (BK): Our inspiration comes from being fully present wherever we are. Being home in Florida has genuinely ignited my creativity. The water, the sunsets, and the great outdoors constantly inspire me. Whether I’m out on a small boat, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying a day when the Gulf is as smooth as glass, I can’t help but feel grateful.

On those beautiful Saturdays when I have a break, I love to wander from my truck parked on Grayton Beach to work on a song or jot down some ideas. It all flows so naturally, without even trying.

We believe in creating our future and a happy, fun present. That’s the environment we’ve built together, and it’s such a joy to share it with my best friend and wife.

Brittney: One of the critical things in our relationship is that we don’t just say yes to each other for the sake of it. If he’s unsure about something, he’ll suggest, “What if we changed this color a bit?” or “I like that style, but what if we switched this part?” I do the same with his music.

We’re always honest with each other, and that’s such a blessing. Just saying “yes, yes, yes” isn’t helpful when trying to be creative; you need that genuine feedback to grow. Our ability to provide each other with thoughtful input is super inspiring.

VIE: As a couple, how do you inspire each other in your creative projects?

BK: Brittney inspires me every day with her consistency and hustle. I try to match that energy, and it reminds me of my dad. He’s one of my heroes, always working hard, whether doing yard work or managing his commercial property. Brittney brings that same level of dedication.

She’s fantastic with numbers and logistics, and her creativity blows me away, too. We feed off each other, and it’s a lot of fun. There are nights when we’re lying in bed, trying to wind down, but instead, we brainstorm ideas. Sometimes, we have to remind ourselves to take a break!

VIE: Brittney, tell us about your recent Tribe Kelley VAULT and Town and Country Collections!

Brittney: With the VAULT Collection, we drew inspiration from our original line of Butter Sweats. One key factor was our approach to custom colors; we wanted to offer something beyond our core palette of black, gray, and desert tones. Limited edition colors like Seafoam and Jewel, along with patterns like the Beach Cowboy print, were meant to be special, which is a big part of what makes Tribe Kelley unique—we run limited edition pieces, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.

After listening to our customers’ feedback, we noticed a strong demand for the return of specific colors and patterns, especially the Beach Cowboy print. So, we had a big internal meeting and decided to create the VAULT collection. The idea was to metaphorically “go into the vault” and bring back those beloved pieces we had initially set aside.

We researched for months to find an actual old vault for our photoshoot. I envisioned a place that felt like we had gone underground to unlock these pieces. We found a historic vault in Memphis, Tennessee, that dates back hundreds of years, and they allowed us to set up our shoot there.

Our newest collection—the Town and Country Collection—features colors like Camo, Spice, greens, and grays. It’s inspired by our ongoing collaboration with

“BRIAN AND BRITTNEY KELLEY EMBODY THE SPIRIT OF CHASING DREAMS AND LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST. BRIAN SHINES AS A COUNTRY MUSIC STAR WITH A STRING OF HIT SONGS THAT RESONATE DEEPLY WITH FANS, WHILE BRITTNEY WEAVES HER CREATIVITY INTO THE FABRIC OF HER TRIBE KELLEY CLOTHING BRAND.”

Mossy Oak and diving into vintage catalogs from brands we love, looking back forty to fifty years to see what was popular. Fall is a big season for us, and we are thrilled to share these new pieces with everyone!

VIE: Brittney, looking back on your journey with Tribe Kelley, what have been some of the highs and lows? How have those experiences shaped the brand?

Brittney: Manufacturing is a huge undertaking, especially since it’s just me and Megan, my operations manager. Initially, we worked with several manufacturers—one for our athletics, another for our western wear, and another for our traveler bras. It felt like juggling a lot of moving parts. Many assume that BK and I have a big team handling everything, but we’re deeply involved in every aspect of our music and fashion. We’re hands-on every day, which was particularly tough a decade ago when I was still learning the ropes.

Back then, we sourced everything down to our thread and fabric, moving pieces between various locations. Fast-forward to today, and I’m thrilled to say we’ve brought most of that process under one roof right here in the United States. I’m now sourcing my fabric and thread, cutting, sewing, finishing, and fulfilling everything in-house. Figuring it all out has shaped the brand and my growth as a business owner.

VIE: How was this year’s Tribe Kelley Honky Tonk in Nashville?

Brittney: This year’s Tribe Kelley Honky Tonk was an incredible event! It was an exclusive, invite-only party celebrating our top customers. We invited our top one hundred customers from the past year, and they got to enjoy a fantastic evening with us. They

experienced a night filled with food, drinks, and the chance to shop our collection before it launched to the public. Plus, as a special treat, BK performed a free concert!

We recognize customers who genuinely care about what we do, which feels special. While brands often invest heavily in influencers, the actual customers who buy the products don’t always receive the same acknowledgment. We wanted to create a unique experience for those who genuinely support the brand!

VIE: Tell us more about Papa Surf Burger Bar. What excited you about the future of Papa Surf?

BK: Owning Papa Surf Burger Bar alongside Jason and Brittany Aldean and Tom and Christine Glavine has been an incredible experience. The backyard patio around our massive magnolia tree creates a beautiful setting. It’s the kind of place Brittney and I would love to discover if we were visiting the 30-A area. This time of year is especially perfect for outdoor dining, with playoff baseball and NFL games adding to the vibe.

The renovation and design are exceptional, thanks to Courtney Bishop from South Carolina and local architect Geoff Chick. You can feel the thought and attention that went into creating this space, which resonates with our guests.

Sure, it could maybe use more parking, but that’s part of its charm—great spots often take some effort to find. We’ve put a lot of thought into the food and are proud of its quality. Partnering with the Glavine and Aldean families has been a rewarding journey, allowing us to build something special from the ground up. We’re not just putting our names on it and walking away; we’re genuinely invested.

Brittney: The Glavines live nearby and always check in, which adds a great family dynamic. Their son is our manager, so we’re in constant communication. Working with the Glavines and the Aldeans has been fantastic—we’ve created a family-friendly, fun atmosphere. It’s exciting to be part of a business that feels so family-oriented and welcoming!

Our staff is amazing and elevates the experience. We’re grateful for our local support—shout out to our loyal customers!

VIE: BK, you’ve brought back the Surf Post Sessions this fall—what inspired you to continue these events? What have been some of your favorite moments from this season’s Surf Post Sessions?

BK: Oh man, they’re just so dang fun! The Tribe Kelley Surf Post is such a historic spot in Grayton. I like to think of it as a “pin drop” location—it’s one of my favorite places. We’ve created this incredible atmosphere where folks can come eat, drink, and make new friends. I play songs from my albums, unreleased tracks, and fun new creations, which is an absolute blast! Anything goes back there, and it just feels like pure joy.

Plus, we love the hospitality aspect! We’re serving Papa Surf burgers, mingling our brands, and connecting with our fans. The architecture and design of the Surf Post—how it looks and feels—make it an unforgettable setting. My studio is upstairs, where I’ve written and recorded many songs, so it’s a meaningful place for us. Each night has its vibe—some are rowdy, some are laid-back, and you just never know what to expect. This year, we even had karaoke! Fans got to hop up on stage and sing their hearts out, and let me tell you, it was a good time.

I always wanted to do more after our first round in 2022, so I took a break in ’23 to focus on getting more music out and creating a fresh experience. But don’t worry, we’ll kick things back up for a few weeks during spring break!

VIE: BK, tell us about your new album, Ed and Mary Margaret’s Son!

BK: This record caught me off guard! I was doing my usual thing—setting aside time to get creative, jotting down song ideas, and writing chunks of songs. That’s been my process for a lot of my career. After I dropped Tennessee Truth, I started writing again and got curious about finishing songs on my own. I wrote half a verse and a chorus and thought, “What if I just complete it myself?” I did that with a few more songs, and suddenly, I was having so much fun!

It was a challenge I didn’t anticipate tackling so early in my solo career, but it felt right. All these songs were written from mid-June to the end of August, right after my last record. I had a creative surge—a bit of a heart spill, if you will. It felt like I had already lived these songs; I needed to piece them together.

Every record tells a story, a snapshot of a season in life, and I believe this is my most authentic record yet, especially since I wrote it all by myself. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to put this out so quickly, and I couldn’t have done it without my talented team of producers and musicians who helped push this into overdrive!

VIE: How did you write your song “If I Go First”?

BK: That song came from another I was working on during this process. I was in the second verse of that other song when I stumbled upon a line that felt like it belonged in a different context. I thought, “Oh my gosh, that’s a whole song!” So I started fresh and wrote “If I Go First.”

It’s crazy to think about my relationship with Brittney—we’re going on eleven years this December! I just watched my parents celebrate their fifty-first anniversary in August, and it’s amazing how much you grow together over the years. You think you love someone when you marry them, but after five years, you realize just how much deeper that love goes.

This song touches on those deep feelings; it’s bittersweet and my saddest song yet. It’s tough to think about, but it’s honest, and that’s what country music is all about—real emotions laid bare. It just flowed out of me without too much overthinking.

VIE: Brittney, what was it like when you first heard the song?

Brittney: Oh my gosh, I can hardly listen to it! It’s so sad. I started spiraling, thinking, “I don’t want you to go!” It’s such a sweet sentiment, but it also makes me feel sick and sad at the same time. It’s a beautiful mix of emotions—feeling so loved but scared to lose it. That’s the essence of country music—honesty and realness.

VIE: BK, please share what it was like to have your single “Make America Great Again” go viral and to perform at the RNC convention. Did you experience support or backlash? And bravo to you for standing your ground!

BK: Thanks! I wrote “Make America Great Again” about a week before the failed assassination attempt on former President Trump. When that happened, I felt compelled to use my voice as a concerned American. I knew there were millions out there who shared my feelings and thoughts.

Releasing this song and letting go of any doubts felt liberating. I grew up in a small political

environment—my dad was a commissioner, then mayor, and later county chair until 2020. I watched him work with people from all sides to get things done, and that’s how I approach my business and life with Brittney. We lead with love and aim to enjoy life regardless of differing beliefs.

Honestly, I felt more love than anything else throughout this experience. It felt like a family reunion at the RNC—a special moment for me. I was honored to perform “American Spirit” alongside an incredible choir that brought the energy. Their voices were powerful and made the moment unforgettable. Overall, it was a great experience!

VIE: As country music royalty with your career skyrocketing as part of Florida Georgia Line, how do you feel emerging as a solo artist and penning many of your new tunes? It looks like you’re having the time of your life.

BK: Absolutely! Starting fresh is always a journey. I’m incredibly proud of everything I accomplished with Florida Georgia Line. I can hang my hat on that success and am deeply thankful for the fans who changed our lives. Now, I’m so grateful that music is leading my life. It brings me immense joy to see people connecting with my songs—whether it’s “Hold On, Cowboy,” “Beach Cowboy,” or “Make America Great Again.” Brittney and I are thoroughly embracing our creativity, and I have more music and projects in the pipeline. My goal is

to let the songs lead the way—I think of myself as a song hunter, always looking for what’s next!

VIE: What key lessons have you both learned from your industry experiences that you’d want to share with aspiring artists and entrepreneurs?

Brittney: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the value of surrounding yourself with people who have already done what you want to achieve—especially those you admire and can see yourself following in their footsteps. It’s all about humbling yourself enough to ask for help. Finding mentors in the industry has been a gamechanger for me. I love saying, “Hey, can I take you to lunch to pick your brain?”

When people ask how to get started, I always say it’s about doing your research. Create a solid business plan, and don’t hesitate to connect with mentors who can guide you.

BK: The key is always to be a student and strive to improve. Looking back, I remember my college days and my strange jobs, including putting up bathroom stalls. Despite being exhausted, I always made time to work on my songs—getting up early and staying up late.

My advice is to do the work, even when you’re tired or not feeling your best. If you want something in life, you’ve got to carve out time for it. Sometimes, I sit down to write, feeling uninspired and with no ideas in mind, but I still show up. Often, I leave with something I love, or at least it sparks more creativity for the next day.

And on the business side, this might be obvious, but if you’re signing any contract it’s crucial to review it yourself, not just rely on your lawyer or team. You need to know exactly what you’re getting into, so read through it multiple times and understand what it means.

VIE: Is there a dream collaboration—musical or otherwise—that you’d love to pursue?

BK: Hank Jr. is at the top of my list for dream collaborations—that would be amazing! But honestly, I’m pretty open-minded. If someone reaches out, whether they’re a big name or just starting, and they have a song that resonates with me, I’m all in. I like to let the songs lead. If it moves me, I trust it will resonate with others, too. If it feels good and sounds good, I’m open to it!

Brittney: Mossy Oak was a dream collaboration that took a lot of effort. I spent countless hours in meetings and worked hard to make it happen, and I honestly wasn’t sure if it would come together. But now that we have another new Mossy Oak pattern with the Town and Country Collection, I feel like I’ve landed my dream collaborator!

VIE: Looking ahead, what’s one goal you both hope to achieve next year?

Brittney: Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about what our ideal life looks like. For the past ten years of marriage, it felt like we were flying by the seat of our

pants. We spent so many years living on a tour bus, hardly ever home, and then COVID hit, which turned everything upside down. I see next year as a huge opportunity for us to take control of our schedules and lives, even if it’s as simple as having two weeks at home to cook dinner and watch the sunset. Thinking about setting up our perfect days, weeks, and months is exciting. That’s been a big goal for us since we got married—gaining more control over our time.

BK: It all ties back to gratitude for what we’ve built together. We’ve got some fantastic projects, like Tribe Kelly Surf Post and Papa Surf Burger Bar— two unique spaces that reflect our story. We aim to keep these places thriving, where people come to make memories and enjoy what we’re doing.

VIE: Thank you!

“ONE OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS I’VE LEARNED IS THE VALUE OF SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY DONE WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE— ESPECIALLY THOSE YOU ADMIRE AND CAN SEE YOURSELF FOLLOWING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS ... FINDING MENTORS IN THE INDUSTRY HAS BEEN A GAMECHANGER FOR ME.”
I’m not afraid to take risks. I’ve learned that if you follow your gut, you’re usually following your gift, too, so just go with it.

A REVIVAL TO REMEMBER

Billy Reid Celebrates 20 Years a the Return of Shindig

the Shoals Community Theatre, on the corner of Mobile and Seminary Streets in Florence, Alabama, has been a venue for countless film screenings, theatrical performances, concerts, and community events since opening in 1948. But October 12, 2024, was the first time it hosted a world-class, fashion week-worthy runway show for an audience of celebrities, fashion influencers, media, and esteemed guests. This is just one highlight of an incredible weekend hosted by designer and creative Billy Reid, whose flagship clothing store, office, and studio are around the block from the theater. After a half-decade hiatus of his signature event, Reid admitted the number-one question people have asked him over the past couple of years was, “When is Shindig coming back?”

Shindig

Revival answered loud and clear.

While Merriam-Webster defines a shindig as “a social gathering with dancing” or “a usually large or lavish party,” Billy Reid and his team built upon and redefined that meaning. During the event’s first ten years, it built a reputation as one of the South’s most stylish and creative social gatherings. The three-day extravaganza comprises a series of concerts, art exhibitions, industry talks, cultural tours, culinary experiences, and more, all curated by Reid and his team. It’s designed to bring people together in the best way, celebrating art and culture while supporting the small community of Florence, the hometown of Reid’s wife, Jeanne. (The couple decided to move out of New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and have raised their kids, Abba, Mattie, and Walton, in Florence alongside Billy’s fashion brand.)

We’re an anchor business in a small community, and when we see little things continue to grow around town because of something we’ve done, it shows a residual effect of what an event like Shindig can do. It makes me proud. “

The pandemic necessitated a halt after Shindig 11 in 2019, and other extenuating circumstances, such as navigating post-COVID supply chain issues and a changing production schedule, made reviving it this year challenging. “It’s been a bit hectic,” Reid admits with a laugh, “but it feels good.” He says getting another event under his team’s belt was exciting, especially because it was the first Shindig for many staff members who came aboard in the past five years. “I was excited for our new team members to experience it and make their own stories during Shindig. One of my favorite moments from years past was being in the audience at one of our first Shoals Theatre concerts with my wife and her family—no matter what age, everyone was grooving. That’s what it’s all about. In moments like that, I think to myself, ‘Okay, we’re doing something good here.’”

Long before Shindig Revival, the event and Billy Reid’s presence in Florence and The Shoals area of Alabama helped revive a lackluster downtown area that is now alive with stores, restaurants, bars, and galleries. The University of North Alabama (UNA) has long anchored the downtown district, and thanks to the community’s efforts to revitalize over the past two decades with the help of supporters like Billy Reid, students, visitors, and locals alike have a social hub for great food, nightlife, shopping, and events.

“The city has embraced us,” Reid shares. “It’s mutually beneficial. We’re an anchor business in a small community, and when we see little things continue to grow around town because of something we’ve done, it shows a residual effect of what an event like Shindig can do. It makes me proud.”

The Shindig footprint around Florence and its neighboring community of Muscle Shoals expanded more than ever during this year’s events:

• Guests were invited to tour FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, made famous in the late 1960s and 1970s for hosting countless hit recording artists, including Aretha Franklin, Cher, Duane and Greg Allman, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so many more. Now a popular tour destination thanks to the 2013 documentary Muscle Shoals, the studios have been revived and are still churning out hits from such artists as Jason Isbell, Lana Del Ray, Demi Lovato, and The War & Treaty, to name a few.

• Tours also took Shindig attendees on a mid-century modern architecture journey as they explored the Rosenbaum House. This Usonian-style residence is the only home in Alabama designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and it’s one of Billy Reid’s favorite spots in Florence.

• Friday’s Welcome Dinner took place at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, a historic home-turned-museum a few blocks from Billy Reid HQ. Here, guests mixed and mingled while enjoying libations from Urban Cowboy Public House, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Maison Noir Wines, with incredible food prepared by James Beard Award-winning chefs Sean Brock and Adam Evans. The art center also featured a special photography exhibition by Wes Frazer and an interactive tintype photography experience by Blake Wylie.

• Wilson Park in Downtown Florence was jamming Friday night as Shindig’s public concerts welcomed The Brook & The Bluff and SistaStrings to the stage.

• Friday night’s music headliners took over the entertainment back at the Shoals Theatre. Phosphorescent brought the heartfelt mood music before rock duo The Kills followed up with a raucous good time in the historic venue.

• In honor of the Southern college football tradition and UNA’s Homecoming weekend, Billy Reid hosted a tailgate at McFarland Park overlooking the Tennessee River on Saturday afternoon. It featured bites from James Beardnominated chefs Josh Quick of Odette and Bill Briand of Little Bird. Cocktails flowed courtesy of mixologist Jose Camacho of Adios Bar in Birmingham, Alabama, while guests enjoyed football on the big screen, shopping, and the opportunity to create a custom chain-stitched Billy Reid piece.

• Other experiences around town included late-night dining and music at Odette, FloBama Restaurant, Yumm Thai: Sushi & Beyond, and The Carriage Wine & Market.

Pulling the local community in for Shindig doesn’t end with restaurants and venues; Billy Reid has also upheld a tradition of sourcing models from around Florence and the surrounding area for his annual runway show. “We use ‘real people’ as models—people who the clothes are made for,” explains Reid. “It lends perspective and character to the looks, and we try to do a New York-level runway show here for the community.”

We

just want to be true to ourselves and our customers, who are looking for something with unique textiles and lines—bold yet wearable, interesting, and something they can wear for years to come.

Unique runway venues for past Shindigs have included the Rosenbaum House and a local gymnastics center, but this year’s presentation at the Shoals Theatre takes the cake. Four-time CFDA winner Billy Reid celebrated twenty years in business by showcasing over thirty looks featuring pieces from the brand’s archives and ones that have remained icons throughout the years. “We showed some Fall ’24 pieces as well, creating an opportunity for what’s essentially a theater full of customers to see not only some of our favorites from years past but also what’s in the store now or what will be in the store and online in a couple of months,” Reid says. “People get jaded about runway shows in the industry, so we always try to do something different.” While local models (including Reid’s children Walton and Abba) sauntered down the aisles of the packed theater, guests were enamored with a musical performance by Abraham Alexander. The soulful Texas-based artist also shared stories while performing a set following the runway show.

Reid says that going through his archive of between five thousand and seven thousand pieces in preparation for the twentieth-anniversary show and Shindig Revival was an interesting experience. “Our archive is stacked and packed, and this is the first time we’re allowing the public to browse it—it’s definitely the most organized it’s ever been!” he laughs. “It’s been cool to look back on good times and times we struggled. My wife and I also just moved out of our house of twenty-three years, so there’s been a lot of reflection lately.” Although around half the sample pieces in the archive are things that never made it into production, Reid says he was excited for people to come in during Shindig to tour the small warehouse in the back of the store and see thousands of fabric swatches, men’s and women’s designs, hats, shoes, and more. Some guests even tried on their favorites. “It was a really cool, interactive way for people to come in and see the journey we’ve been on over the past twenty years.”

Shindig guests heard more about Billy Reid’s journey on Saturday morning as Reid chatted with industry icon Fern Mallis, the creator of New York Fashion Week, in an intimate discussion downtown.

Citing post-pandemic supply and production delays as recent catalysts, Reid says the industry has significantly changed since he launched his first brand, William Reid, in 1998. “We’re now working on collections up to two years out, where before it was about nine to twelve months out,” he admits. While Shindig festivities echoed throughout the Billy Reid store and its backroom social venues with cocktails and art exhibits, members of the team were still upstairs in the studio preparing for Saturday night’s runway show and putting the finishing touches on Spring 2025 collections.

“Fashion is also no longer regional,” the designer adds. “Everyone’s wearing the same thing as the internet allows us to see and buy styles in real-time, and the market is saturated. But I never worried about what the ‘trends’ were anyway. My inspiration comes from so many places: I could look at a building and how the beams are crossing and think of that as a plaid, or design a collection around a trip I took to Ireland. We just want to be true to ourselves and our customers, who are looking for something with unique textiles and lines—bold yet

wearable, interesting, and something they can wear for years to come.”

There are undoubtedly many more beautiful, timeless designs in the works at Billy Reid, who also recently acquired Knot Standard, a custom clothing producer for men’s and women’s fashions, from suits to performance and casual wear. The company’s Digital Measuring App software is a leader in the industry for helping customers achieve a perfect fit, even just by submitting a few photos of themselves to their style advisor. Custom and tailoring have always been parts of Billy Reid’s business, and this acquisition represents a massive shift toward expanding even further while the brand bounces back and rebuilds offerings in the wake of the global shutdown.

Shindig Revival’s headlining concert brought the main events to a bittersweet ending as guests enjoyed American folk masters Gillian Welch and David Rawlings on Saturday night, but that wasn’t the end. The annual Graffiti Alley Party punctuated an incredible weekend of fashion, art, food, and music. It was a funky way to unwind during what has become a tradition since one of the first Shindigs when a “moonshine-soaked” celebration spilled into the alley behind Billy Reid and started it all. This year’s festive afterparty featured drinks, snacks by Soul Wingery, and an iconic rooftop performance by Muscle Shoals and Los Angeles up-and-coming hip-hop/ folk recording artist Walt^n (none other than Walton Reid), accompanied by Billy Reid and band members from the Alabama Shakes, Motel Radio, and Carver Commodore.

After a farewell brunch by Odette, Shindig revelers disbanded on Sunday, with many fashion insiders preparing to fly back to New York, Los Angeles, or other destinations with a crew of new friends and a newfound appreciation for The Shoals area. Although it might be a year before this celebration of fashion, culture, and good company returns, rest assured that the arts are alive and well in North Alabama thanks to creative and generous spirits like Billy Reid.

DANCING Through

GRIEF

There are some things in life we can never truly prepare for, and losing a spouse or life partner due to unimaginable circumstances is one of them.

That was the devastating reality for Bryan Martin, whose partner, Clayton Bond, developed a severe case of ringworm from contaminated soil in his mother’s backyard. They later learned that the previous owner of the home had buried a pet there, and Bond broke through the plastic bag it was contained in while gardening, accidentally touching the remains. Martin cared for his partner throughout a grueling months-long battle with the fungal infection and severe side effects caused by it. Unfortunately, the stress on Bond’s body became too much.

“I had lost my dad in 2017, and just four months later, I was rushing Clayton to the hospital, where

they said he was in terminal liver failure and had only about eight months left,” Martin shares. “I took care of him while working full-time, and when he passed away, I really didn’t know what to do.”

Martin, who holds a degree in marine biology from Salem University in Massachusetts, spent the beginning of his career working with sea lions and dolphins in San Diego and then at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. “But I didn’t want to be landlocked,” he admits. The desire to be closer to the water led Martin and Bond to the Gulf Coast of Florida. Martin took a position at the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach, where he worked mainly with the sea lions and

penguins—earning him the nickname “Sea Lion Bryan,” which has become his well-known social media handle. He was working at the Gulfarium when the harrowing situation with his partner occurred.

After Bond died, Martin began sharing his story on Facebook, citing it as the easiest way to inform everyone of what had happened without continually repeating himself. After a few months of sharing his raw, heartfelt feelings on social media, Soaring Spirits International (SSI) reached out to him. The SSI community’s mission is to support people who have been widowed by connecting them via their network so they may share their grief and experiences, have their feelings validated, and get help learning how to cope with their new reality, regardless of their marital status, age, gender, sexual orientation, race, or religion. “This group is amazing, and I’m glad I get to share it with people because it’s really important to know that widowed people come in all shapes, sizes, and ages, and you don’t have to be married to be widowed,” Martin shares. “They asked me to represent the LGBTQ community as one of their blog writers. So, for five years, I would write weekly about where I was and how I felt.”

Writing became a way to channel his emotions and help others through the power of shared experience. Martin says it was during those first few years blogging for SSI that he began to move forward again with his life after dealing with

back-to-back devastating losses. “I never say ‘move on’ because you don’t,” he admits.

“But when the world shut down in 2020, I was extremely depressed,” Martin continues. “A friend reached out to me and said, ‘You’ve got to do something that brings you joy. You used to really love dancing; why don’t you jump on TikTok and try it?’ My answer was initially, ‘Isn’t that for twelve-year-old girls?” But thanks to his friend’s encouragement and a community of people sharing goofy dance videos on the app, Martin decided to give it a shot. Shockingly, his first dance video went viral, and he saw a jump of about ten thousand followers on TikTok just from that first post. “I realized it was fun. I thought, ‘I can’t control that the world is locked down, but I can control this.’ I promised myself I would do one dance video a day, just for myself—and that started it all.”

Martin began posting videos and sharing stories about his sea lions in addition to his daily dance videos, even dancing with them on occasion, and he saw his following on social media begin to climb. When Facebook and Instagram started heavily pushing video content in late 2020, Martin shared his TikToks there and saw exponential growth in his audience on those platforms.

“It exploded,” he says of the skyrocketing numbers. “My Facebook is now at about 1.1 million followers, and Instagram’s at over 300,000. I was sharing my blog every week and sharing my dancing, and people

noticed, ‘Wait—you’re sad, but you can be happy at the same time?’ It made me realize people needed to see that those things can coexist. It has continued to build an amazing support group not only for me but those followers, as well.” His efforts even earned him a spot on “Dance Party Trivia,” a game segment on ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan talk show in 2021, which he won.

After about five years of writing for SSI and watching his community grow on social media, Martin realized he wanted to fill in some of the gaps in his stories by adapting his blogs into book form. He began working on The Widowed Dancer: Growing Through Grief with Gratitude , a memoir with the goal of reaching an even wider audience—particularly those who might not use social media. He was very intentional in its creation: the cover needed to be bold and the text large enough for readers of all ages to easily access, and all the photos are in color to provide life and a sense of joy even when talking about very raw, sad things. Martin says he chose to self-publish the book through Amazon because he didn’t want to filter his writing or be edited; he preferred sharing his thoughts and emotions precisely as they were when he first wrote them to channel his grief.

“Grief and love are the two greatest uniters,” Martin explains. “They bring everyone together. And seeing how people resonated with my story and how grief isn’t linear, I wanted to have the book as an option for people. They

can still see my blog, but I wanted to publish the book in honor of Clayton, of myself and the journey I went through, and to show everyone how you can grow through grief. The response has been incredible. I wrote the book for myself and my well-being, but seeing that it has created a safe space for other people and knowing that it’s helping them gives my loss meaning and a greater purpose—even if I help just one more person, that makes a difference.”

Martin is still sharing his dance videos daily on social media under his handle @sealionbryan, where he also occasionally shares content starring his husband, Devin. The couple recently celebrated their first anniversary, and Martin continues to tell his story, inspire his audience, and process his grief and happiness in tandem through connecting with others.

“After we go through something that sticks with us, we have to remember not to focus only on the past; present time is a gift—that’s why it’s called present ,” he reminds us as he shares advice on fighting through the most challenging moments

of life and loss. “There are smiles and happiness in your future. Don’t let your past steal future minutes because we don’t get many, and in the blink of an eye, they’re gone. Honor your emotions, but realize you have to come to terms with what happened, accept it, and know that you are 100 percent successful at surviving every day. So remember that you’ve done your best every day, and you’ll continue to do your best. Look forward, grow through your grief, find joy, and spread it in abundance. You will be shocked at the abundance of amazing things that come into your life if you share your story.”

For the Love of Kids

Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) has had a successful year in 2024.

In February, the nonprofit celebrated another successful fundraising event in partnership with Alys Beach at the 13th Annual 30A Wine Festival. The lively weekend featured sophisticated flavor profiles from the country’s most established vintners, and attendees raised their glasses high, helping to raise over $80,000 for CVHN’s children’s healthcare initiatives. To date, the organization has established mobile dental clinics that serve over one thousand children each year with free preventative dental care. CVHN has also expanded its offerings to include complimentary mental health services for youth in Okaloosa and Walton counties.

In March, the Children’s Volunteer Health Network held its third annual Soirée on the Bay auction and wine tasting. The event took place at the beautiful Dugas Estate and raised over $300,000 to support CVHN’s work in the Northwest Florida community. Guests enjoyed dining and dancing under twinkling lights by the shore of the Choctawhatchee Bay, coming together to celebrate CVHN’s service-oriented mission. Special thanks go to Café Thirty-A and Basmati’s for providing delicious food and to the Tip Tops band for their lively performance under the stars.

In April, VIE proudly sponsored the Destin Charity Patron Wine Dinner, which took place at Camp Creek’s ANR Restaurant. Guests enjoyed a fivecourse dinner with hand-selected wine pairings from Domaine Della and Betz Family Winery. VIE rolled out the pink carpet to welcome esteemed guests, passed hors d’oeuvres and champagne, and vintners mingled with each table to offer an unforgettable dining experience. The evening successfully raised $200,000 for CVHN, demonstrating the generosity and love poured into supporting the local community.

By June, CVHN achieved a record-breaking year by providing essential dental services to children in Walton and Okaloosa counties. The organization’s two mobile dental clinics, “Pearl” and “Neicy,” brought smiles to the faces of children across

the Florida panhandle. They served over 1,265 children and delivered nearly $500,000 in free dental services during the 2023–2024 school year. Of these 1,265 students, 81 percent were able to protect their teeth from decay using the Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART), a minimally invasive remedy for cavities. The remaining 16 percent of students received treatment from CVHN’s extensive network of dental professionals, relieving them from pain and severe infection.

CVHN has implemented several classroom programs to promote dental longevity and vibrant health. The Early Intervention Preschool Program visits preschool classes six times a year to apply a medication that reduces the risk of tooth decay by up to 97 percent. The My First Toothbrush Program provides toothbrushes and toothpaste to local students and nonprofit organizations through generous donations. In 2024, CVHN donated over fourteen miles of floss to community members in need. These initiatives promote proper dental hygiene and make bright, confident smiles accessible to all.

As they kicked off the 2024–2025 school year, CVHN began serving additional sites, including Destin Elementary School, Southside Primary School, fifth graders at Freeport Middle School, and preschool students at the Wise Center and Freeport Learning Center. These new locations were added to their growing list of schools where they provide essential dental care services, ensuring more children receive the preventative care they need. The nonprofit organization is also looking to expand its network of dental, vision, and medical professionals interested in contributing to its mission of providing affordable and accessible healthcare for children in need. Support from the local community is critical for the success of the program. If you are interested in joining the network and offering your time and services, please get in touch with Megan Trent at megan@cvhnkids.org.

October brought new opportunities to support CVHN through exciting local events, such as the 2024 Witch Rides in Bluewater, Santa Rosa Beach, and Destin. This fun-filled event not only raises funds for CVHN but also raises awareness about children’s health issues in the community. Part of Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation, the Harvest Wine & Food Festival in WaterColor, Florida, took place from October 17–20 with a weekend of Pleiades wines and culinary delights. This festival and other DCWAF events are great opportunities to enjoy delicious food and wine while supporting a good cause. CVHN requires volunteers for fundraisers throughout the year. If you’re interested, you can fill out the form on CVHNKids.org/ContactUs to get involved.

We are incredibly proud to have the Children’s Volunteer Health Network as a valued community partner and to witness their benevolent service to the community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the supporters, volunteers, and donors for making this possible. Congratulations to CVHN for a record-breaking year of community impact!

To connect with CVHN, please visit their website, CVHNKids.org, and follow along on Instagram @CVHNKids05 and Facebook @CVHNKids.

What one almost certainly wouldn’t expect to hear from someone when asking what they do for a living is, “I create crossword puzzles.” But when you think about it, those puzzles seen in newspapers, magazines (including this one), or books on airport newsstands must come from somewhere. We got the inside scoop on the puzzle biz from one of the masters, Myles Mellor, author of thousands of crossword puzzles and the co-inventor of Diamond Crosswords.

“My crossword writing career came about by good fortune and persistence," he says. "I have been very lucky in finding something I love doing and then making a career out of it,” says Mellor, who was born in Oxford, England, and moved to California in 1984. The VIE staff have been thrilled to publish his themed crossword puzzles matching each issue of the magazine for several years, and we were excited to catch up with him to hear the heartfelt tale of how he became a professional puzzler.

VIE: We love having your themed crosswords on our page called “The Last Word.” What inspired you to become a crossword puzzle creator?

Myles Mellor : It all started in 2001. My father and mother were in England. They had been married for fifty years when my mother passed away, and my dad was pretty depressed. I was over here in the US and wanted to do something to cheer him up. I remembered that when I was young, he used to teach me to solve crossword puzzles. He would solve The Guardian newspaper crossword every day and started showing me the tricks of the puzzle writers for that paper. I was only eight years old, but I did start catching on.

Crosswords were never a big thing for me for many years. However, I decided to try to write some to help my dad and bring him a little happiness. I wrote them on lined paper and used a ruler and a black felt-tip pen to put them together. Very rudimentary! For some reason, I decided to base them on

themes like architecture, history, etcetera. I started sending them across the pond to him, and he loved them! It really helped him in life. He began writing me long letters and commenting things like, “I loved the puzzle, but you made a spelling mistake!”

After I had made three or four for him, he said they were pretty good and advised me to try to get some published. I decided to try it. My wife told me, “Don’t quit your day job!” At the time, I worked in administration for a real estate company. I sent out a lot of puzzles to syndicates, newspapers, and magazines at the time and got a lot of polite rejections. That went on for six months. One day, I picked up a newspaper on the way to work and noticed the name of a puzzle writer in the Orange County Register : David Hoyt. I emailed him asking for tips. He was very kind and gave me a lot of pointers, which helped me break through and create my own business from my work.

VIE : Why did you choose to do themed crosswords as a specialty?

MM : I really don’t know why I started writing themed puzzles for my dad. Later, I read a book from the early ’60s in which a crossword writer suggested doing theme puzzles for magazines. That’s what cemented the idea for me.

VIE : What other types of puzzles have you created? What is your favorite?

MM : I create newspaper-style crosswords (more generic but with about three long theme phrases in them). I syndicate these to over one hundred newspapers. I have twenty-four books of this style of puzzle published on Amazon with every level of difficulty, from “super easy” up to “challenging” and giant “Sunday puzzles.” You can visit my website, ILoveCrosswords.com, where I have all these books available and a description for each one. I’m pretty pleased with these books; they are selling well, and most have over four-star ratings.

Aside from that, I write cryptograms, crypto quotes, anagrams, and diagramless crosswords—a bit fiendish! (You get a blank diagram and a clue list and have to figure out where the black squares are and solve the clues!) I also write word searches, sudokus, and a number of other word puzzles involving rhymes and jumbled letters. But the puzzles I enjoy writing the most are probably the type of theme crosswords I write for VIE .

VIE : Tell us a little about the process of creating a good crossword puzzle. How do you develop the clues and fit everything together (without giving away any secrets)?

MM : I always start in the top left-hand corner and start thinking of the theme and words that could be used in the puzzles. I write the first word across the top and a black square to end it. Then I start looking for words that go down, from “1 Down” onward. I love words and create a lot of theme word lists. I also read all the time and look for new phrases and cutting-edge words relating to the themes I use.

VIE : Do you like to work puzzles as much as you enjoy creating them?

MM : I do enjoy solving them, but I usually only do that when I’m on a flight.

VIE : What do you like to do in your free time?

MM : II like to travel. My wife and I went to Europe for a year in 2016 and visited eleven countries. That was a thrilling experience. Aside from that, I

like to play with my grandkids. I also read novels, especially intelligence-related ones. Now and then, I play chess. My wife, Debby, does art shows (she’s a watercolor and pastel painter) and I support her during those by helping her set up her booths and sell her paintings. She is very talented, and I love her work and that my crosswords have helped finance it.

VIE : Tell us more about your wife’s artwork!

MM : My wife, Debby Fleming, started painting in high school and won an award from the State of Michigan for her work. Life intervened after that, and she spent many years raising her kids and working in her own business as a claims adjuster. However, she always loved art and trained for ten years at a private art school called Mission Renaissance. When the kids left the nest, she made art her new career. She has been painting and selling her work for the last five years. She shows her work at the prestigious Laguna Art A Fair, ArtWalk San Diego, ArtWalk Carlsbad, and La Jolla Art & Wine Festival. She is a realist painter who creates very detailed, colorful watercolor and pastel paintings. She recently won first prize for her watercolor work at the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival!

Time After Time

Since VIE’s friendship with Christian Siriano began when we met him in 2015, and even before, he has continually inspired us with his visionary approach to fashion. His Spring/Summer 2025 collection was inspired by fairy tales and dark romance, featuring an array of stunning silhouettes adorned with eyecatching sequins and textures. With a flagship fashion and interior design space now based in Connecticut, Siriano blends modern aesthetics with timeless elegance, creating pieces celebrating individuality and selfexpression. He redefines his fashion landscape with each collection, proving that style knows no bounds.

Of course, we adore seeing his pieces on some of our favorite celebrities and can’t wait for awards season!

There’s

a NEW KIDD IN TOWN

ART THAT IS HEAVEN SENT

INTERVIEW BY MORGAN POWER | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SAVANNA KIDD

Savanna Kidd, a thoughtful and creative art curator, designer, and collaborator with Maison30a Home + Garden, recently sat with VIE for an exclusive interview. In the interview, this New York native delved into the intriguing story behind the founding of Morning Glory Art & Design. Savanna shared her inspiration, challenges, and the driving force behind her artistic journey.

VIE: What inspired you to start a business in the art industry?

Savanna Kidd: I have always loved being an entrepreneur and the inherent creativity that

comes with owning a business. Years ago, I had a multi-million-dollar rigging and lighting company based in Atlanta, Georgia. I produced and installed concert stages for well-known acts like Sting and Eric Clapton in some of the largest hotels in town. However, I studied interior design in school, and I am an artist at heart who likes to dabble in many things and craves the creative process.

Since I went to school in New York for interior design, I was exposed to upscale projects in gorgeous homes and came to recognize and appreciate high-quality furniture. Fast-forward a few years, I would periodically come across furniture that had

seen better days but still had a useful life. Sadly, I had neither the resources nor the inclination to do something about it. At some point, I could no longer deny my desire to salvage and repurpose well-made furniture into valuable works of art. With a bit of dedication—and a lot of work—I learned how to strip, paint, and patina quality pre-owned furniture that was otherwise destined for the landfill. I knew there was a growing demand for it. You know that saying, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”? It’s called “upcycling” these days, but I like to think of it more as “resurrecting!” And so, Morning Glory Art & Design—and not to sound cliché— was a dream that was birthed from my garage.

VIE: Is there any significance to the name “Morning Glory”?

SK: As I contemplated names for my new art business, I found myself immersed in the uplifting melodies of Christian music, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. I wanted the company name to reflect my gratitude to God for what He has given me. Suddenly, a name emerged in my mind: “Morning Glory”—a name that reflects the act of resurrection and celebrates the beauty and potential of each new day!

VIE: What led to the collaboration between Morning Glory and Maison30a?

SK: I met Christopher Bailey in Atlanta, Georgia, around 2014 at a furniture show. We immediately hit it off and soon found ourselves embarking on a creative collaboration. Oddly enough, our initial venture together was a juice bar business, but before long, Chris had a brilliant idea to combine our skills and focus on selling furniture. Over the past decade, we’ve journeyed to various

locations, including New York, High Point in North Carolina, Brimfield in Massachusetts, and many others.

VIE: What is your favorite part about showing at market?

SK: Through the years, Chris and I have worked closely together, opening Maison30a. Even though we are different, we always seem to end up at the same conclusion. Chris has a much larger scale with his furniture, where my art pieces act as the perfect infill. But we work great together as a team—we lift each other up in our own weaknesses.

Chris is fantastic at setting up a show like no one else. When we visit Atlanta, he only has three days to bring in all the furniture, set it up, and paint the walls. It’s really fun, and there’s nothing quite like it. I handle the art orders, and then we set everything up together. It’s beautiful to see it all come together. People always notice our shows, and we work really well together. We’ve been

collaborating for ten years, and each year just keeps getting better and better!

VIE: It seems that you place a strong emphasis on prints in your work. What aspect of prints inspires you the most, and how do you choose artists to collaborate with?

SK: I have a unique approach when it comes to selecting artists and pieces for my gallery. During a

“WHAT I FIND MOST APPEALING ABOUT THESE PRINTS IS THE DEPTH OF CHARACTER EACH ART PIECE POSSESSES. IT’S A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS WHERE CLIENTS DISCOVER THIS FOR THEMSELVES.”

trip to Paris eight years ago, I discovered beautiful prints by artists from around the world and selected nine pieces to bring back home. Since then, I have collaborated with these artists, who send

SAV

me choices through their travels. I curate a diverse and unique collection that reflects the global art scene. The artists find the art and use fabulous recycled paper to create a distressed look, which is then glazed to give it an antique finish. This process is all done by hand.

VIE: Do you have any advice for people who want to frame prints or find new pieces to complement their style?

SK: When you check out my Instagram, you’ll notice my passion for working with clients. Initially, I inquire about their space, preferences, and dimensions, and then we delve into discussing colors. What I find most appealing about these prints is the depth of character each art piece possesses. It’s a collaborative process where clients discover this for themselves.

Some individuals simply want guidance on selecting art that complements their spaces. They already have the basics covered with the space, drapes, and rugs. So, I start by asking, “What are your wall dimensions? Do you have any photos? What ambience are you aiming for?” It varies from client to client, and I find great joy in witnessing the final outcome. The installation process can also be a bit challenging at times. Did they choose a frame? Did they hang it on the wall? Did they use a rod or a frame from a store like Lowe’s? I always provide various suggestions, leaning towards the more creative side, and I’m thrilled to see where it leads.

VIE: What are your hopes for the future of Morning Glory?

SK: I promote my work wherever I sell, but I want to expand. I aim to reach Scandinavia, explore Africa, and ultimately go global. Art is a form of energy

from the people, much like music. Just as musicians collaborate and create, I love the collaborative and creative aspects of art. I am eager to connect with artists, seeking inspiration and forming a community. At Morning Glory Art & Design, we put in hard work but also know how to have fun. Let’s come together and embrace the energy that God has created for us to enjoy.

VIE: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

SK: I am incredibly grateful to be here in beautiful 30-A. My vision was to connect with interior decorators and provide more beauty to their homes. I’m thankful that I can have my own company and work with my partner, Chris, to achieve this. This is just the beginning, and we will always have new art coming in and new furniture to offer. I feel blessed to be able to work with art and artists from all over the world and sell their creations.

VIE: Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story. We wish Morning Glory + Maison30a every success!

The Blueprint

ARTREPRENEUR’S

AN ARTIST'S JOURNEY

rendan Parker, a talented artist based in Miramar Beach, Florida, discovered his passion for creating and exploring creativity through various mediums and art forms at a young age. As a creative individual who enjoyed building structures with LEGO bricks and cardboard materials, Parker always sought new and exciting things to do and explore.

Parker, a self-taught guitarist, displayed a strong interest and talent in the music industry before delving into other art forms, such as painting and sculpting.

Parker, originally from Georgia, relocated to Florida with his family and became familiar with Justin Gaffrey, a talented artist from Santa Rosa Beach who creates visually stunning pieces using different mediums and textures. Parker’s interest in art grew when he discovered one of Gaffrey’s pieces using gel medium. The textured effect of this particular piece inspired Parker to experiment with the same gel medium, introducing him to the diverse array of art mediums used in the industry.

Brendan Parker utilizes different mediums to create his masterpieces, which are showcased throughout the Alys Beach Selene Building.

Before his twenty-first birthday, Parker faced a significant setback—a severe burn to his hand. This injury, which initially hindered his ability to play the guitar, turned out to be a turning point in his artistic journey. It was during this time that Parker decided to experiment with the gel medium art supplies sitting dormant in his closet. This transition into experimenting with different mediums as an artist was a testament to his resilience. Forced to explore other creative outlets, Parker quickly found his passion in creating art pieces. With resin quickly becoming one of his favorites, Parker has produced many stunning pieces showcased locally throughout the 30-A region, featuring resin, epoxy, and many other mediums.

“As an artist, you’ve got to evolve and do new things to get out of your box.”

With eight bespoke works featured in the Alys Beach Selene Building and pieces showcased in the Lupine show home, Parker’s work is a testament to his passion for collaboration. He actively collaborates with the Alys Beach designer community to create and install breathtaking pieces into buildings and homes in the area. Together with other community designers, he also supplies pieces to residential clients in the area, enhancing the beauty of the neighborhood. Parker’s enjoyment of these collaborations is evident, and he was initially given the opportunity to work with Alys Beach by principal designer Emily Graham. This collaboration has been a great

accomplishment for him, as he states that Alys Beach is one of his favorite areas to visit.

“It’s therapeutic in a way. For me and my process, I would say the ritual behind it is just getting into a flow state. A lot of my best creations come out when I’m feeling intense emotion, and most of the time, those are periods where I haven’t painted for a while, and the pressure builds up. It’s like I can finally release and blow off some of that steam.

In addition to selling his artwork, Parker has created The Artrepreneurs Blueprint. This e-book brings together the lessons, strategies, and techniques he has learned throughout his career in the art industry. This compilation of topics and advice is designed to assist other creatives in achieving success, providing a fast-track course for thriving in the art industry more efficiently.

“My journey, initially fraught with financial struggles as a full-time artist, was a learning curve rife with a

stubborn approach and business missteps. A significant shift in mindset, embracing abundance, and being guided by mentors has been transformative for me. As a successful artist with substantial sales, my goal with this book is to empower other artists. I aim to provide a direct path to artistic and financial success, sharing the lessons that have reshaped my career and life.”

Parker continues to promote his e-book and has announced that he is also working on an online course. This course aims to assist artists in finding success in the industry by offering tips, advice, inspiration, and resources for those seeking to advance in their art careers.

“I tend to have this philosophy that not everything people teach is for everyone. It’s not a one-size-fits-allall formula because people are different. I’ve always had that mindset.”

As Parker continues to explore different mediums and take on new projects, he hopes to expand his artwork into other markets and have a greater impact on the world through his passion. He also aims to offer more exhibits and showcase his art on a larger scale while continuing to create for the beautiful homes and businesses of Northwest Florida.

DOMINICAN REPU BLIC RE SORT MAKING WAVES IN LUXURY

manera, a private resort in the Dominican Republic by the esteemed Aman luxury group, is a place where tangible peace and serenity abound. Stepping out of the black car onto the porte cochere, we were greeted by a soft kiss of the sea-salt-infused wind. With “Aman” meaning “peace” in Sanskrit and “era” meaning “water” in the language of the Taino people, Amanera is perfectly named. The destination perches atop sixty-foot cliffs, overlooking the gorgeous landscape of Playa Grande while the waves of the Atlantic crash onto the pristine sandy beaches. Adjacent to the lush fairways of the lauded Playa Grande Golf & Ocean Club and backed up to the water by the deep, dramatic Cordillera Septentrional mountainous rainforest, the resort offers incredible 360-degree views and a breath of relaxing fresh air.

Even the journey to the resort felt magical. As we descended into Santiago Airport, breathtaking views of deep-blue waters greeted us, glowing in a way we’d never seen before. An agent from Amanera waited at the gate to guide us through the airport and left us with a private driver to whisk us away, navigating busy streets and winding roads. The drive through lush greenery, climbing one side of the mountain and descending the other, culminated in the soothing sound of swelling waves, signaling our arrival at Amanera.

We approached the main entrance and walked over a gorgeous suspended walkway to the front desk, where we enjoyed refreshing wellness cocktails.

“CASA

GRANDE, THE EXPANSIVE PRIMARY BUILDING, SITS ON THE EDGE OF A CLIFF, OFFERING STUNNING VIEWS OF GOLDEN SANDS AND AZURE WAVES.”

Casa Grande, the expansive primary building, sits on the edge of a cliff, offering stunning views of golden sands and azure waves that almost brought tears to our eyes. The second story features a lounge bar, library, and boutique, while the first hosts a beautifully balanced indoor-outdoor restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on seasonal local ingredients. Our Ocean View Pool Casita, a fully private stand-alone suite with a bar, living area, and outdoor space, took our breath away upon entering. After a warm welcome and tour of our suite, we returned to Casa Grande for dinner, where the attentive staff

already knew us by name as if we were old friends. Our table soon filled up with fresh juices, tuna ceviche, grouper, and Angus ribeye as we conversed about our disbelief in being somewhere so remarkable. It was the perfect end to our first day at the stunning resort.

The following day, we woke up with the sun, feeling refreshed as its light filled the room. For breakfast, in-room dining was the way to go—avocado toast, bacon, and smoothies made with fresh, organic ingredients to start our day with clean

energy. Amanera’s staff arranged a post-breakfast hike for eight o’clock. After our meal, we met our guide at Casa Grande and ventured through the tall front gates to begin our hike across the street.

As we pushed through lush vegetation and mango-laden trees, our guide pointed out our destination: a covered pavilion atop the mountain. We trekked up a beautiful path while soaking in the sights and sounds of the forest. After a hearty fortyminute hike, we reached the summit, greeted by a birds-eye view of the landscape. We enjoyed another delicious breakfast and sipped iced lattes, marveling at the expansive property, with Casa Grande overlooking the scattered Casitas below.

Back at the resort that afternoon, we called a cart to take us down the cliffside to Club de Playa, the resort’s private beach club tucked into a sandy cove on Playa Grande. We stepped into a sleek, modern, open-air restaurant, where the welcoming staff invited us to sit at a table closest to the soft sands and crashing waves. The food was some of the best I’ve ever had—we ordered grilled octopus and two styles of tacos. While we enjoyed our meal, Natacha, Amanera’s groups and events coordinator, found us and offered to show us one of the most stunning Casitas on the property: the Amanera Casita. This suite is the crown jewel among the resort’s twenty-five exquisite suites, boasting panoramic views of the seven-mile beach and seemingly endless horizon.

The day flew by, and it was time for dinner before we knew it. We were excited to attend a champagne tasting featuring Billecart-Salmon, a luxury French champagne brand. The tasting began with asparagus cappuccinos and scallop carpaccio, followed by lobster tortellini and A5 wagyu steak, all paired with the brand’s wine. The tasting concluded with gourmet desserts and even more champagne on the top deck of Casa Grande, where we chatted with the hospitable general manager, Lionel, and the BillecartSalmon ambassadors.

Our Sunday morning plans included surf lessons with the nationally renowned surf champion, Junior. As we enjoyed breakfast at Casa Grande before our adventure, we received our daily “Amanera Newspaper,” which informed us of inclement currents in the ocean. Shortly after, Natacha approached us to share the news that surfing would be too dangerous for the day. The Amanera team prioritizes safety, and while we were eagerly anticipating our surfing experience,

we understood the careful decision. We took the opportunity to sit down with Natacha and learn more about the exciting water activities Amanera offers.

At the stunning Playa Grande, surfing rises above recreation; it embodies a lifestyle intertwined with health, nature, and joy. Nestled along the breathtaking coastline of the Dominican Republic, this idyllic spot, just a five-minute drive from the resort, offers not only incredible waves but also a vibrant community that celebrates the ocean’s beauty and energy. For those seeking a personalized adventure, private surf lessons through Amanera provide a unique opportunity for a one-on-one experience tailored to each individual’s skill level and goals.

Under the guidance of expert instructors like Junior, participants delve into essential surfing basics, including paddling techniques, proper stance, and wave selection. Instructors prioritize ocean safety, ensuring guests understand the changes in the sea and how to navigate them confidently. The excitement of riding the perfect wave can only be enhanced by the serene backdrop of Playa Grande’s golden sands and lush palm trees, creating an atmosphere that inspires excitement and tranquility. In addition to teaching technical skills, these lessons encourage a deep connection with nature. Surfing at Playa Grande allows participants to immerse themselves in the stunning coastal landscape, fostering a sense of mindfulness and appreciation for the environment.

Amanera’s commitment to providing exceptional water experiences extends beyond the surf lessons. They also offer kite-surfing, board yoga, boat tours, kayak or stand-up paddle boarding eco-tours, and deep-sea fishing. Learning about all the resort had to offer made us want to return as soon as possible!

We closed out our last full day under the beating sun of the beach, enjoying massages under the palm trees growing out of the cool sands. At night, we headed over to Club de Playa again for dinner. They were hosting cuatro fuegos, or “four fires,” which celebrates classic Dominican flavors with a modern twist. There was live music, a calm breeze, delicious food, and smiles on our faces as we spent our last night reminiscing about the indescribable peace we felt during the past few days.

The following morning, we were sad to part ways with the staff we had grown so fond of and say goodbye to our gorgeous lodging and the resort’s beautiful architecture. What we did take with us were memories of an idyllic, romantic getaway. We still dream of the sound of crashing waves, hoping to one day return and conquer the surf on a board. Until we meet again, Amanera!

A herd of giraffes running in the Lapalala wilderness of South Africa
Opposite: Melote House is a luxury boutique resort within the Lapalala, where guests can enjoy the tranquility and excitement of Africa’s landscape and wildlife while supporting a nonprofit nature reserve.

Protecting Africa’s Wildlife

Excitement had made the day start earlier than it needed to. Much as I had tried to extend sleep, I couldn’t rest. Today was the day we would be given a tiny, first-hand glimpse of what protecting the animals in South Africa’s 118,000-acre Lapalala wilderness, in the Unesco-listed, malaria-free Waterberg Biosphere of Limpopo, some 185 miles north of Johannesburg, involved.

After three days on the reserve, staying at Melote House, one of only three lodges in Lapalala, we had seen some of the most majestic—and

vulnerable—animals on earth, albeit their bulk or speed should have made them invincible.

We sat in our jeep as a herd of elephants grazed past us. Their bodies were so close that we could count the folds in their skin and the muscles in their trunks. We crept through the wilderness, following the track marks of cheetahs until we found two brothers at rest and play. From a distance, we watched a gray rock against the mountain move. My eyes strained to bring the shape into focus, and as they did, I felt goosebumps rise on my arms. What

“Noka Camp and Melote House aim to safeguard and preserve Lapalala and its wildlife, which we do by providing guests the ultimate in accommodations service, food and beverage, and experiences.”

emerged through my blurry vision and the noon-day haze of heat rising from the earth was one of the world’s oldest and most endangered creatures—a black rhino.

With a weight of up to 2,975 pounds and 50 million years of evolution behind them, it may seem unlikely that rhinos will face extinction. However, human greed and Asia’s unfounded belief that rhino horn is a cure-all, wonder medicine have brought the species to the very brink of wipeout.

There was a catastrophic decline in numbers between 1960 and 1990 when poachers killed 97.6 percent of the global population. At one point, there were just 2,300 black rhinos left in the wild. Now, there are about 6,000 in all of Africa, but the demand for rhino horn is insatiable, so poaching remains a constant threat, and guarding the herds is a round-the-clock job in some countries.

Kate Hughes, operations director of Lepogo Lodges, which comprises Melote House and Noka Camp in Lapalala, established Lepogo as a nonprofit organization to protect Lapalala and its wildlife, including rhinos, cheetahs, and the recently added pangolins, the most trafficked animals in the world. Other inhabitants of Lapalala include wild dogs, buffaloes, lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes.

Hughes expressed that establishing a conservation legacy in Africa, where all financial gains are reinvested into the reserve, had been a lifelong aspiration. “Our lodges, Noka Camp and Melote House, aim to safeguard and preserve Lapalala and its wildlife, which we do by providing guests the ultimate in accommodations, service, food and beverage, and experiences, including two daily game drives,” she shares. “We strive to deliver the finest of everything.”

During our morning with the vets, Hughes joined us as we observed the tagging of a zebra and a warthog. I was curious why it was necessary to tag these

animals, which involves a brief but stressful process of pursuing the animal by helicopter and then tranquilizing it from the air so that the ground team can attach a GPS. Vet Anamika explained, “Tagging the herbivores gives us a better understanding of their movements. This reserve is fenced, so we must manage nature to some extent to observe how the animals use the terrain and where they go. It helps us see the bigger picture and plan where and how we might need to intervene.”

Such guardianship is expensive: last year, animal protection, including surveillance cameras, GPS, air patrols, and twenty-four-hour anti-poaching rangers, cost more than thirty million rand ($1.65 million). “Leaving a conservation legacy is at the core

Melote House, operated by Lepogo Lodges, was designed to offer guests the ultimate luxury accommodations while blending with the land and supporting the environment as much as possible.

“The team has indeed created something extraordinary at Melote. The property opened in 2024 and is a stunning sole-use getaway for up to sixteen people.”

of who we are, and by creating beautiful lodges with the highest possible standard of accommodations for guests, we can maximize our income, enabling profits which we return to the reserve for conservation projects,” says Hughes.

The team has indeed created something extraordinary at Melote. The property opened in 2024 and is a stunning sole-use getaway for up to sixteen people. Designed by world-class architects, including Yuji Yamazaki from New York’s YYA Architecture, Jacobus Uys and Jessica Rogers from Black Sable, which specializes in luxurious safari lodges, and Kelly Adami from Johannesburgbased Copperleaf Studio, Melote’s striking good looks are underpinned by the most stringent adherence to sustainability and a determination to leave as small an impact on the environment as possible.

The three-tiered property is made from rammed earth, which is a method of compacting natural

materials, including the soil displaced during construction. It is built into the hill, and its curved shape does not just blend with the landscape but seems to emerge from it. “It was designed to be one with its setting,” says Hughes, “to be as much a part of the landscape as human ingenuity could achieve. We have living roofs that have been planted with native grasses and trees that will, in time, draw herbivores to feed there; we have off-grid renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic panels and sophisticated heating and cooling systems; we recycle water, and we offset the carbon footprint of every guest’s entire journey, from the moment they leave their homes to the moment they return.”

Guests having breakfast on the terrace or enjoying a morning swim in the infinity pool might catch sight of impalas, giraffes, zebras, and even lions at the waterhole just beyond. In front, behind, and all around, Africa is wild and free. In such a location, it

is impossible not to feel at one with nature: the views from Melote are incomparable. Endless. Timeless.

Once inside, guests will find that the decor, though inspired by the colors and hues of the bush, is far from your typical safari lodge. The atmosphere is more cosmopolitan and contemporary, which was precisely what Hughes intended. “My hope is that Melote House stands as a beautiful, sustainable house on its own—a destination in itself with the wonders of an incredible safari experience, a bonus,” she says. “The interior design celebrates the landscape, originates from it, and tells its story in subtle and elegant ways.”

Hughes collaborated with award-winning designer Kelly Adami to discover and acquire artwork by

some of South Africa’s leading artists. Evolution Product printed a painting by Clive Walker, the conservationist behind The Endangered Wildlife Trust, on fabric, which was then used to create throws and screens. The gorgeous custom and handmade hemp table linen is by Mogalakwena Craft Art Development Foundation, which provides employment opportunities for local individuals and promotes the preservation and continuation of traditional craft skills.

The skill, sophistication, and perfectionism of the work are evident in every inch of Melote. The guest suites—six in the main house and an additional two in a separate cottage—have floor-to-ceiling

windows that open onto a private terrace with an outdoor shower. There is a second shower inside, a bathtub, a double vanity unit, a walk-in wardrobe, and a lavish selection of drinks and snacks. Most of all, though, I loved the skylight above the bed. All I had to do to draw its shade was press a button by my bed, and above me was the sky alight with stars. Heaven.

The suites are a sanctuary, while the rest of the house is meant for spending time with family and friends. The main living area includes a library, study, bar, lounge, and dining area. All meals are served here, ranging from fresh fruit salads, homemade granola, and egg dishes for breakfast to sushi for lunch and ostrich pad thai for dinner. Additionally, there is a

gym, a spa, and a rock pool and bar on the top level of the property. This is a magical place to enjoy a sundowner while reflecting on the day’s activities and planning for the next.

Melote House is a fully staffed property for up to sixteen people, available for exclusive use. The main house features six suites, and the adjacent cottage has two more. Prices start from $14,800 per night (270,000 South African Rand). Situated in the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Melote House is accessible from Johannesburg Airport by a 3.5-hour drive or a fortyminute charter flight. A THRIVING COMMUNITY NESTLED ON THE BAY

Churchill Oaks

As a young man, Louisiana native Roy Sembera began his first career as a petroleum engineer and started his own company in the oil industry. After years of dedication and hard work, Sembera achieved remarkable success, allowing him to retire by age thirty-nine while continuing to provide for his family. Sembera and his wife, Wendy, moved to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, with the plans to recreate a Southern paradise that resembled their home in Covington, Louisiana, and they have done just that. Beginning development along the scenic bends of Choctawhatchee Bay and Hogtown Bayou, the stunning Churchill Oaks community was born.

As a neighborhood of quiet luxury and true Southern elegance, Churchill Oaks boasts 46 percent of the development as green space. Preserving natural surroundings has been one of the developers’ top priorities throughout all expansion plans. Towering magnolias, majestic live oaks, and longleaf pines create a serene backdrop for walking trails throughout the area, promoting an active lifestyle for all residents. To further showcase the beauty of the landscape, most homesites in Churchill Oaks provide room for courtyard space, outdoor kitchens, and other amenities to complement indoor-outdoor living.

With its charming Low Country-style architecture and meticulous craftsmanship, Churchill Oaks is the perfect place for those seeking respite from a busy life. Identified as a true community project, architect Matt Savoie, Chris Burch of Grand Bay Construction, and Tim O’Hara of Coastal Custom Builders have all graced this development with their expertise and vision, creating a neighborhood that blends modern comfort with classic Southern charm. Each homesite showcases thoughtful design by emphasizing open spaces, natural light, waterfront views, high-quality materials, and exceptional craftsmanship.

The developers incorporate their personal touches throughout the building process to ensure perfection

throughout Churchill Oaks. Roy knows every homeowner and is excellent at connecting his owners and helping them become a genuine community. “It seems like every time we get someone new in the neighborhood, everyone wants to hang out,” he says.

The community boasts over two miles of walking trails, a bayfront clubhouse and infinity-edge pool, a private deepwater marina, and ample green spaces for extracurriculars, ensuring that everything you need is just a few steps away. Phase one of this development is nearing completion, and renovations to the clubhouse are ready to be enjoyed by all. With floors reclaimed from a historic train depot and magnificent exposed wood beams from a cotton mill in Alabama, this space is infused with

a rich history that deepens the Low Country allure of the community.

“It’s all starting to come together now, so I can ride around at night and see everything and gauge whether it’s coming together the way I thought it would,” Roy shares. “Having an engineering degree is like having a math degree—and a variable I never really counted on before was the people—the people we have here are all amazing, good people with great stories. Family and friendship is so important. I had that in South Louisiana, and now we have that here in Churchill Oaks.”

With Tim O’Hara overseeing construction, phase two will begin soon to further enhance the community by adding a high school-size basketball court, pickleball courts, an additional sixteen homesites, additional boat slips, and many more amenities aimed at fostering the growth of this sought-after neighborhood in South Walton. As a serene bayfront neighborhood with a deepwater marina, Churchill residents can enjoy all of the luxuries of waterfront living without being directly on the Gulf.

Café Thirty-A is a beloved restaurant in Seagrove Beach, Florida, on Scenic Highway 30-A.

A LEGACY OF FLAVOR

A NEW ERA F O R CAFÉ THIRTY-A AND BASMATI’S

Photography courtesy of Café Thirty-A

ince 1995, Café Thirty-A has held a cherished place in the hearts of countless families who consider a visit to Scenic Highway 30-A in Florida’s Panhandle incomplete without a meal at this iconic spot. This beloved Seagrove Beach restaurant was brought to life by the visionary Harriet Crommelin, whose passion and dedication transformed it into more than just a dining destination—it became a landmark. Harriet’s creation was infused with a warm, homelike atmosphere, setting the stage for a place that embodies charitable spirit, culinary excellence, and enduring charm. Her legacy continues to make Café Thirty-A a standout gem, a “gathering place for those who believe that good food and good company are the center of a life well lived.”

Following Harriet’s passing in early 2023, longtime employees Jackie Maliszewski and David Kessler were graciously gifted the role of owners for the restaurant. VIE had the privilege of speaking with Maliszewski, who provided insight into

Harriet’s enduring legacy and shared details about an exciting new chapter in the story of another iconic 30-A restaurant.

VIE: What do you think has contributed to Café Thirty-A’s enduring success and iconic status?

Jackie Maliszewski: I believe Café Thirty-A’s success can be attributed to two key factors: our commitment to consistently delivering delicious food and the long-standing dedication of our employees. Over the years, we’ve cultivated a reputation for exceptional quality, which is a direct result of our focus on excellence in every dish we serve. Our team’s experience and stability have been crucial in maintaining this high standard.

Harriet, the heart and soul of Café Thirty-A, was remarkable for how she nurtured her employees. She always treated her staff respectfully and made them feel

like family. Her caring approach created a loyal and motivated team, contributing significantly to our success.

Kessler and I strive to uphold her values by prioritizing our team’s well-being. Our goal is to keep Café Thirty-A as a place where exceptional food and a supportive work environment go hand in hand, reflecting the principles that made it thrive under Harriet’s leadership.

“O UR G O AL IS T O KEEP CAFÉ THIRTY-A AS A PLACE WHERE EXCEPTI O NAL F OO D AND A SUPP O RTIVE W O RK ENVIR O NMENT
G O HAND IN HAND, REFLECTING THE PRINCIPLES THAT MADE IT THRIVE UNDER HARRIET’S LEADERSHIP.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s been just over a year since she passed away; it feels like it was only yesterday. The transition has certainly been an adjustment, but it’s also been a valuable learning and growth experience for us. In terms of the menu, we maintain the popular items like the Crab Cake and Sesame-Crusted Tuna. At the same time, we plan to introduce some new dishes. With our talented kitchen team, led by Chef Tim Williams and Chef Angela Poe, we are excited for what the future holds.

VIE: Can you elaborate on how Harriet’s legacy and philosophy influenced your decision to acquire Basmati’s?

JM: In December 2023, Kessler, Diew Svendsen, and I acquired the beloved Blue Mountain Beach restaurant, Basmati’s Asian Cuisine. Much like Café Thirty-A, Basmati’s has been a cherished fixture on Highway 30-A for nearly thirty years. When we learned that Basmati’s was for sale, we jumped at the opportunity to ensure it continued to thrive with its distinctive charm.

Our goal has been to preserve the essence of Basmati’s while incorporating a few improvements based on the lessons we’ve learned from Harriet over the years. We’ve introduced online reservations and made aesthetic updates like new tables and chairs. We have plans to make the screened-in patio more enjoyable year-round by adding air conditioning and heat. We are keeping the menu the same, and most of the staff is still there, which is a significant part of what makes Basmati’s so special. Our approach mirrors the consistency we’ve strived for at Café Thirty-A, ensuring that Basmati’s continues to be known for the qualities its loyal patrons have always loved.

VIE: Are you catering to more couples or families in our coveted vacation destination?

JM: It seems that our little slice of heaven on 30-A has become more widely recognized, especially in the wake of the pandemic. We cater more to families, many of whom have visited us since they were young and now bring their children. At the same time, we’ve welcomed many first-time visitors to the area. We aim to create lasting memories for all our guests, hoping they’ll make both Café Thirty-A and Basmati’s part of their annual traditions.

Enjoy al fresco dining on Basmati’s outdoor screened-in patio. Basmati’s is nestled in Blue Mountain Beach, overlooking the beautiful surroundings of Draper Lake.

VIE: Tell us more about this year’s Annual Charity Ball.

JM: We have been hosting the Charity Ball for almost as long as the restaurant has been open. Our primary beneficiary has always been Caring & Sharing of South Walton. Caring & Sharing provides essential support to families in need, including clothing, food, assistance with utility bills, and more. Last year was a record-setting year for us, raising $64,000! This year’s Charity Ball is scheduled for December 7, and we hope to set another record.

VIE: Can you tell us more about Café Thirty-A’s charity work?

JM: We help with Caring & Sharing and have a warm spot in our hearts for Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) and Alaqua Animal Refuge! Alaqua has always been near and dear to Harriet, and we want to continue to support them

in any way we can. We have been benefiting and supporting CVHN for over fifteen years, first through sponsoring the wine festival in Alys Beach and now with Soirée on the Bay, which raised almost one million dollars in the last three years. We’re constantly brainstorming new ideas to support these charities and make a positive impact.

VIE: Thank you, Jackie!

Thanks to the leadership of Maliszewski and Kessler, Café Thirty-A continues to honor Harriet’s vision for the restaurant. Their commitment to philanthropy, the welcoming atmosphere, and the food that has been “consistently delicious since 1995” keep visitors returning year after year. With the recent addition of Basmati’s to their portfolio, the pair aims to enhance the love and loyalty both restaurants have cultivated on 30-A.

Reservations are required at Café Thirty-A and can be made at CafeThirtyA.com. To learn more about the Charity Ball, visit CafeThirtyA.com/Charity-Ball. Mr. and Mrs. Woods

in Alys Beach a FAIRY-TALE WEDDING

In a world where love
reigns supreme, it is the very essence of our existence.

t VIE, we have been weaving tales of romance and passion for sixteen years, with love stories that captivate both heart and soul. One such enchanting narrative unfolded in the charming town of Alys Beach, Florida, where the union of Ann Marie Delaney and Casey Gunnar Woods was nothing short of a fairy tale.

As the clock struck five o’clock on the evening of April 6, 2024, the couple exchanged their vows amidst a splendid array of colorful florals on the Gulf Green at Alys Beach. Their guests were delighted by the elegance of their love story and the grandeur of their celebration.

“I grew up in Panama City, Florida, and Casey grew up in St. Pete, Florida,” Ann shared. “Being the sporty people we are, we met in 2013 while playing

intramural flag football at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Over the years, we enjoyed many ice-cream dates and gym workouts together.”

By December 2022, Casey was ready to propose. “We got engaged in Tulum, Mexico, on the private beach behind the house where we were spending our Christmas vacation with my family,” he recalled. “It was just the two of us under the palm trees, with a photographer I had hired, discreetly hidden nearby. My family was inside the house, watching through the windows.”

“Casey got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife,” Ann added. “It was the easiest ‘yes’ of my life! It was a tropical proposal of my dreams and the best Christmas gift I could ever ask for.”

We had the pleasure of experiencing every delightful detail of their love celebration. We immersed ourselves in every moment and shared in the magic of their extraordinary day and subsequent honeymoon extravaganza.

VIE : How did you choose the venue for your wedding? Did you explore many options?

Ann Woods: Casey and I were in no hurry when it came to planning our wedding, as we really wanted to savor our engagement period. Then, in April, we received exciting news: Casey’s parents, who lived in St. Pete, fell in love with 30-A and bought a home in Alys Beach. This meant that Casey and I could have our wedding in Alys Beach, as weddings there are exclusive to homeowners and their children.

I’ve worked in Alys Beach for eight years and have had countless daydreams about getting married there. The architecture is unparalleled, and one of my favorite locations worldwide. Since 2016, I’ve been enamored with the Gulf Green and Alys Beach. It was the only venue we toured and considered, and it was love at first “site” for me.

VIE: What was the wedding planning process like for you as a couple?

Ann: To my surprise, Casey willingly took charge of the wedding planning. I’m easily overwhelmed, and the thought of planning the wedding intimidated me. Casey, being the fantastic leader he is, was excited to handle the details. He mostly met and spoke with vendors and did a phenomenal job—something I’ve rarely seen from any groom. It meant so much to me that I included it in my wedding vows.

We also hired Sherri Kuhn of 30A To Wed as a planning consultant. Sherri is incredibly sweet, and Casey and I were immensely grateful for her expertise throughout the planning process.

Casey Woods: I found the planning to be a blast. Overall, the experience went very smoothly, and I might have adjusted only two or three minor things—details that no one would have ever noticed.

VIE: Describe your wedding day. Was there a theme to your décor? Share some memorable moments or favorite aspects of the day.

Ann: Our entire wedding weekend was a dream. I believe God played a significant role, for which we are incredibly grateful. I am not exaggerating when I say there wasn’t a cloud in the sky for our Welcome Party and Wedding Day—just perfect blue skies! With a Florida wedding in April and being entirely outdoors, to say we were nervous about the weather would be an understatement.

Our theme was a formal Garden Party, and Carley Hubbard of Showtime Events knocked it out of the park! I told her I wanted a vibrant mix of colors for the flowers, and they looked stunning against Alys Beach’s architecture. We encouraged our guests to wear Garden Party colors; everyone understood the assignment perfectly!

There were many memorable moments during our wedding weekend. One highlight was having Casey’s father officiate our wedding. It was his first time, and after the ceremony, people kept asking if he did this professionally because he was terrific. We chose not to have a large wedding party—just Casey and me on the steps at Gulf Green—and it felt like we were in our own little world. We wrote our vows, which made the ceremony even more meaningful, with smiles, laughter, and happy tears throughout.

Having all our loved ones in one place was a surreal and cherished experience. As a special touch, we gave our guests bottles of whiskey from the private barrel we purchased directly from the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in 2017. We love Old Fashioneds, which were featured as one of the Bride & Groom’s cocktails at the reception.

Casey: All the men were dressed in tuxedos. My dad and I even flew up to Nashville, Tennessee, for fittings at Richard’s Bespoke, which was an unbelievable experience. Countless family members asked if we only hung out with attractive people; everyone looked amazing!

A few notable moments stand out. Our first dance was unforgettable, with the Will Thompson Band performing “La Vie En Rose.” Lindsey,

Will’s wife, learned the song on the wedding day and sang it beautifully.

Another highlight was the speeches. My brother, my great friend Sean, and Ann’s two sisters delivered heartfelt speeches that had the crowd laughing, crying, and genuinely melting our hearts.

Finally, our getaway was perfect. We cruised through Alys Beach on my parents’ Vespa with a sidecar attached.

VIE: Did you honeymoon?

Casey: Yes. The honeymoon was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We started in New York, New York— which we both love—and then ate and drank our way through Europe, including Rome and Florence, Italy and Montpellier and Paris, France.

Ann: At the time, I had never been to Europe. I was counting down the seconds until our honeymoon!

VIE: Why did you decide to start your honeymoon in New York City?

Ann: Casey and I love New York, and when we discovered a direct flight from New York to Rome, it felt like the perfect choice. Being huge foodies, we ate our way

through the city, savoring bagels at Leon’s, cocktails at Dante, steak at Peter Luger’s, and pizza at John’s of Bleecker Street.

Casey even phoned Dante ahead of time to inform them that we were on our honeymoon. They pleasantly surprised us by adding a photo from our wedding to each of our espresso martinis, which brought joy to my eyes—I was so happy that my tears ended up in my martini!

VIE: Tell us about your experience in Italy!

Ann: Italy has always been at the top of my travel list, so I knew right away I wanted to honeymoon there. I’d never experienced a place with so much culture before. Everyone was incredibly kind, and the history in Rome was unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Florence’s sandwiches? Well, let’s just say they surpass Publix subs. I never realized how much I could love bread, especially Florentine bread. The wine, the architecture, and, of course, the pasta—everyone there must be so happy because they get to enjoy pasta every day. I can’t wait to go back!

VIE: Why Paris?

Ann: Why not Paris? Casey’s mother’s side of the family is French, and he’d traveled to Paris several times growing up. He was excited to show me the City of Love! We were incredibly touched by a generous gesture from my sweet and talented friend, Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, Alys Beach’s town architect. She offered us the chance to stay at her stunning apartment in Paris for our honeymoon.

I’m not kidding—my jaw dropped when we walked into the apartment. The décor, interior design, and location were all breathtaking. From the wedding to

the honeymoon, Casey and I felt so much love from our friends and family. Paris exceeded all my expectations. The Eiffel Tower was even more spectacular in person, and I loved strolling down the streets and watching Parisians interact.

Eating escargot at every meal (except breakfast) was a must, and, of course, shopping was a highlight. I may have shed a tear when I had my first croissant there. Everything just seems better in Europe.

VIE: What made you choose Montpellier as a secondary destination?

Ann: The story of how we ended up there is one of my favorites. While attending the Oysters and Champagne event at the 30A Wine Festival in Alys Beach, we met Pierre-Etienne Chevalier, the sales director for La Grande Sieste, who had traveled from France for the event.

As we chatted and enjoyed their delicious rosé, I mentioned to Pierre-Etienne that Casey and I planned to visit France during our honeymoon, with Paris as our only destination. Later, Pierre-Etienne approached our table and invited us to stay at their vineyard in the South of France. It was an offer we couldn’t refuse.

We adjusted our itinerary and made our way to La Grande Sieste. Thanks to the La Grande Sieste team, our time there was incredible. We had unforgettable experiences with their wine pairings and the French dishes prepared by the vineyard’s owner, Boris Leclercq, a chef at several restaurants in Montpellier. Our stay at their chateau was heavenly, and everyone made us feel so loved. It was the summer European trip of a lifetime!

VIE: Thank you for sharing such an incredible experience!
