Thomas, however, responded by simply stating, “I’m not attempting to grow vegetables here; I’m going to grow people.” And grow people he did! Florida history was never the same after Gideon Thomas’ ideas began to catch on.
fun fact:
In 1935, developer Gideon Thomas built the Panama City Hotel. Thomas saw great potential in the area for tourism development at a time when most people were only concerned with harvesting crops. Many criticized his vision of Panama City Beach, arguing that there was no future in what they deemed “the ugly white sand.”
Soon, the beach became a popular destination for fun-loving travelers. Today Panama City Beach is a premiere destination for visitors from across the world, many of whom flock to bask in the glistening beauty of what was once known as “the ugly white sand.” The region holds a proud place in Florida history.

Dune lakes have passes, or small inlets, that open to the Gulf of Mexico. These passes allow salt water and fresh water to periodically exchange and flush out the lakes. Dune lakes are famously diverse in their plant and animal life. Head to shore, walk a few hundred yards inland and you’ll move through three different ecozones: coastal upland area, true forest and coastal dune environment.
fun fact:
Lake Powell is one of Northwest Florida’s most prized natural wonders. At 767 acres, it’s the largest of the area’s 15 rare and beautiful dune lakes, found here and in only four other places in the world.
Massive and intimidating in size, the dunes are surprisingly fragile, and can be flattened by unknowingly careless beachcombers. These delicate dunes, which grow in height at a rate of about a foot a year, are protected, in part, from the elements found on the windward side. In turn, flora on the leeward side grows green and lush.

They call Schooners “The Last Local Beach Club,” and it really is the last of the old open-air hangouts left on the Gulf Coast. It started back in the late ’60s, when it was known as “The Beach Party.” In 1985, Jim Cannon purchased “The Beach Party” from Kinney Strickland and renamed it “Schooners.” Most people think the name means a type of sailing ship, but, actually, Jim was sitting in Australia sipping an ice-cold “schooner” of beer when he learned that his favorite bar was for sale! He cut his world-tour vacation short and flew back to Panama City to buy the place.
fun fact:
Tootsies Orchid Lounge You never know who you may see at Tootsies Orchid Lounge. Voted No. 1 Honky Tonk in the World, Tootsies provides the best in country music and great times in Nashville, Tenn., and now brings that same country spirit to its latest location at Pier Park in Panama City Beach. tootsies.net; (850) 236-3459.
In 1995, Jim Cannon sold Schooners — just eight days before Hurricane Opal blew in to town! Schooners’ new owners, Sparky Sparkman and Toni Davis, were committed to rebuilding the historic original structure. The original bar, along with every original floorboard, piling, wall and rafter was lovingly restored. Schooners reopened Memorial Day weekend 1996, and locals were thrilled to see that the “old Schooners” hadn’t changed! (Well, the bathrooms were a lot better!)

Hombre Golf Club:
The Premier Golf Course of The Resort Collection Panama City Beach’s most breathtaking, rewarding and, yes, challenging holes make up an unforgettable round of golf By Wendy O. Dixon Adam Brack, golf instructor and master club-fitter with The Academy at Hombre Golf Club, has played at some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the U.S. and Japan. Teeing off at the 27-hole Hombre has its own challenges and rewards, he says. The Hombre is a second-stage PGA Tour Qualifying site each November, a status that sets this course apart from others in the area. The golf course, consisting of three nines — The Good, The Bad and The Ugly — features widely varying looks, lengths and orientations. The course variations test every skill level in a woodland setting with challenging but beautiful holes. Here, Brack offers a glimpse of his two favorite Hombre holes. Hole No. 2 The course favorite, the picturesque second hole on The Ugly, is a replica of the 16th at Augusta National. It is played entirely over water and secured by bunkers on all sides. If you can get through this second hole with a bogey or better, you have done well. Hole No. 12 This is the toughest hole on the Ugly 9. It requires an accurate shot from the tee, as well as the approach. It doesn’t matter where the pin is on the green, it is still going to be a challenge with water in front and on the right side of this hole. Guests of The Resort Collection of Panama City Beach enjoy preferred access and pricing at Hombre Golf Club along with special golf packages. One such package, the Weekend Golfer’s Package, includes spacious golf villa accommodations for
Adam Brack, golf instructor, coaches golfer at the Hombre Golf club. four, two days of 18-hole golf, lunch each day at the golf club’s Siesta Bar & Grill — home of the Bogey Burger — and two drinks on the course. The Academy has a private tee for instruction along with an indoor facility. Located in the allweather learning center, the Academy has two hitting bays, a classroom area, video analysis, a club-fitting center, a Three-Trak Launch Monitor and a club evaluation area — all under the direction of Brack. When your day of dueling at the Hombre is done, walk off into the setting sun and enjoy the rewards the destination has to offer … and prepare for another day on the course. A Tradition by the Sea By Janie Thomas Our family has many traditions — eating cinnamon rolls on Sunday mornings, dyeing Easter eggs each spring, watching football on Saturday afternoons in the fall, spending Thanksgiving with my parents in the mountains. Greetings from Pana ma City Beach!
Dear Friends and Fa mily: We’re having a wonderful time here at The Resort Collection’s luxurious Majestic Beach Resort. Bill surprised me with a romantic weekend away, and it’s been everything a girl could ask for since we arrived. The resort staff is so friendly. When we checked in, we immediately went up to the room to enjoy the stunning view from our balcony. The breezy, contemporary décor and the plush bedding made us feel like VIPs. There’s nothing quite like a hotel pillow. We lounged at the gorgeous pool for hours, then went to the beach. As the sun dipped toward the blue-green Gulf waters, we sat in the sand and toasted — with our ice cold, limesqueezed beers — to a beautiful day. For dinner, we ate poolside at the H20 Bar and Grill. The next morning, we woke up early for a sunrise run on the beach. The air was crisp and cool, and the Gulf was calm. The only thing that would have made it better is if our dog, Pepper, had been with us! After enjoying breakfast from our balcony we quickly headed back to the beach, where two lounge chairs and an u mbrella awaited us. We went parasailing and kayaking during the day and then relaxed with cocktails in the bar at F ireF ly, a short walk away. On our last morning, we went for one more dip in the pool and then enjoyed every last minute of our beautiful luxury suite. Talk about relaxation, what an incredible weekend. We couldn’t have asked for more in service or location. Book your trip soon! With love from the beach, Kathy and Bill Resort Collection Treasures 41

What is now poolside dining at Long Beach Resort, The Hangout, has a long history on Panama City Beach. The Hang Out was built by J.E. Churchwell in the early 1940’s. The Casino building was moved from the area now known as Shell Island. The building along the east side of the walkway that went from the Casino building down to the Hang Out was originally a bowling alley. It was built in the 1940’s. Later it became a concession area. On the other side of the walkway amusement rides were built in the 1940’s by John B. Davis, who leased that part of the property. In the 1950’s Shan Wilcox leased the property and brought in his newer rides, which included a Ferris Wheel, Carousel, Bumper Cars, and others.
