A RETROSPECTIVE The Journey Continues
U
ntil this year, life, in general, was fast-paced. I literally did not have an extra minute. I only had time to keep moving forward, making deadlines and decisions to grow our magazine that I founded in 2008 with my husband. Fast-forward thirteen years, and it seems like it all happened in the proverbial blink of the eye as we bring you this Commemorative Issue. Creating it has provided a long walk down memory lane for all of us. The pandemic of 2020 was a catalyst for me taking time to think while I looked at how far we had come and wondered if these unforeseen circumstances would be the death knell to our business. We began publishing VIE in the same year the economy entered the Great Recession. In 2010, we faced the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that devastated tourism along the Gulf Coast of Florida, where we are headquartered. We celebrated the magazine’s second anniversary a week before we were forced to go head-tohead with that disaster. If there is one thing I knew, even then, it was that our team had a lot of tenacity and resilience. At that time, everyone was also telling us that print media was dead. I did not believe them but knew we had to figure out how to make things work in a world where everyone was singing the same tune. And so we did. We love storytelling. We love honoring people and telling their stories. We strive to bring hope to a world that so desperately needs encouragement, to uplift our readers like a breath of fresh air. We also love people. We are a lifestyle magazine that features fashion, health and wellness, music, heartwarming stories, interior design and architecture, artists and art, travel, and all the beautiful things that life can give us. We have also published meaty commentaries on homelessness, Alzheimer’s, organ donation, veterans, wounded warriors, women’s empowerment, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and countless other inspirational stories. We are interested in people—celebrities or not—and all aspects of their lives. I have often said that VIE is a magazine for the everyman. Our goal is that every reader feels well fed with interesting information, beauty, newness, intrigue, and goodness when they finish each issue.
We’ve “grown up” with some of the people we’ve featured over the years and nurtured them in their journeys while building lasting relationships, as you’ll see within these pages. We hope you enjoy a glimpse of our curated highlights as you look back with us. This publication has been a testament to the American dream, as we have done it all without investors. To sum it up, the heart and soul of VIE can be encompassed in one word: LOVE. Here’s to another thirteen years of telling stories and honoring good people in the pages of our magazine.

IN THIS SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE, WE ASKED OUR OWN TEAM OF CREATIVES: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING ON THE IDEA BOUTIQUE PUBLISHING TEAM AND CREATING VIE?
My favorite part of leading The Idea Boutique and VIE is the creative synergy we have established in the company. There are no limits to what we can achieve and create, as we have embarked on so many varied endeavors over the years for our marketing clients and VIE alike. It’s a joy not to have constraints on our journey as we creatively forge ahead. To work with intelligent, talented, caring, and dedicated people who have the same work ethic and interest in creating the best of the best is a daily blessing. I am grateful to each and every team member, client, and advertising partner who has helped build VIE these past thirteen years!

readers are inspired by the Stories with Heart and Soul that we share. The people whose stories we tell are always grateful—some have even said they see themselves and their talents or businesses in a new light because of VIE and the feedback they receive from our readers. I have a feeling of great pride for all we have accomplished and how many people feel we have helped them over the years. Cheers and sincerest thanks to our amazing team, our leaders, Lisa and Gerald Burwell, and our brand partners who support this endeavor. Here’s to many more years of storytelling!

Although I have many favorite moments from working at VIE, one of the most amazing experiences that I will always treasure is the enchanting photo shoot that took place in March 2016 at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Connemara, Ireland. The initial planning and coordinating with all parties involved was quite an undertaking. We worked with Christian Siriano and his team in New York to select the wardrobe pieces to be shipped to Ireland in time for the shoot. The logistics of shipping the dresses overseas and making sure they made it through customs were

Sometimes I stand back in a combination of awe and disbelief that we have been able to accomplish all that we have these past thirteen years at The Idea Boutique and VIE magazine. It’s surreal on so many levels, but one thing that continually stands out to me is the team of people who make this magazine, as they are the true heroes of its success. We could never have achieved what we have without them. This is a year of gratitude—especially when we’ve faced and overcome so many challenges. Thank you to our team! 18 | C OMME MOR AT I V E 20 21
It’s hard to choose a favorite moment or part of working at The Idea Boutique and publishing VIE. Working with our creative team daily, traveling together to places near and far, interviewing celebrities and artists from around the world, coming up with new ideas, and writing my first book are all incredible experiences that I’ve had the great privilege of having over the past nine years here, first as an intern and then as a full-time team member. I also love how the magazine has reached and touched the lives of so many people; that might be the biggest highlight for me. Our

a little nerve-racking, but all the pieces arrived just in time. We also partnered with Surell, who provided the beautiful fur hats, shawls, and cuffs to give each look the finishing touch. I also had the opportunity to visit Connemara in March 2014 for the grand opening celebration of the Clifden office of our publishing company, The Idea Boutique. The people of Connemara are so wonderful to work with. Each vendor and partner really made the planning of this shoot a pleasure. The staff at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel graciously allowed us to set up shop and take over the hotel for the all-day shoot, and Connemara Equestrian Escapes provided the horses and spaniels. Photographer Alex Hutchinson and models Clara McSweeney and Faye Dinsmore are all so talented. Last but not least, the amazing team of hair and makeup artists at Bellissimo Galway were fantastic; we couldn’t have asked for a better team. I want to thank Lisa Burwell—the mastermind behind this incredible experience—and our creative team at The Idea Boutique and VIE. What a dream shoot!

VIE celebrates you. Working as an intern for VIE these past six months has both pushed me and held me together. In a time of uncertainty, the inspiring team and the owner, Lisa Burwell, have proudly taken me under their wings and lifted me up with grace. Collaboration is at the center of their every endeavor and creativity dances freely in this enjoyable environment. Through their supportive embrace, VIE has revealed who I am and the writer and human I hope to become. No matter how new or young you are, everyone has a seat at the table here. One idea, opportunity, or person has the power to change the world; VIE has changed my world. Thank you for everything!
THROUGH THEIR SUPPORTIVE EMBRACE, VIE HAS REVEALED WHO I AM AND THE WRITER AND HUMAN I HOPE TO BECOME. NO
After being part of the VIE team for almost four years, I’ve realized there is no project that we can’t accomplish together! I think that is thanks to the level of commitment, drive, and talent that each person on the team possesses. Whether we’re putting on an awesome event, publishing a book during a pandemic, or creating a new marketing initiative for a client, I know the end product is always the best it can be. We are a small team, but we all work together in a way that doesn’t feel small, because we all bring something to the table. It’s a great privilege to spend my days with the VIE team!
MATTER HOW NEW OR YOUNG YOU ARE, EVERYONE HAS A SEAT AT THE TABLE HERE. ONE IDEA, OPPORTUNITY, OR PERSON HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD; VIE HAS CHANGED MY WORLD.

I am the newest member of this small but mighty team and have gotten to witness the magic firsthand. My favorite thing about being a part of this team is watching the impact we have on our clients and the local community. There is so much thought and detail that goes into everything we do here, and I love to witness a fresh idea breathe life into a business. The year 2020 has presented unique challenges for everyone, but I am thoroughly convinced that there is no creative challenge this team can’t tackle together.

My favorite part about being on the VIE team is being able to work with so many highly skilled creatives, which forces me to expand my knowledge and skill set further than I’d ever push myself on my own. When I first started working for the company back in 2014, fresh out of high school, I was a timid wallflower with no foreseeable future. Now my colleagues challenge me because they see potential in me that I never saw. With a hand in almost every department of the company, I get to work side by side with some of the best teammates I could ever imagine. The team at VIE is exceptionally talented and I am so honored to work alongside them. V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 19

Pop Art’s Rebel Queen Larger-than-life pop artist Ashley Longshore is known for her tongue-incheek commentary on modern fashion, pop culture, and society. She’s also a purveyor of all things beautiful, colorful, and fun. We were honored to photograph her at the illustrious Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City, where she held a solo art showcase from January 11 through February 25, 2018. As Bergdorf ’s first solo artist in residence, Longshore filled the retailer’s hallowed seventh-floor interiors section with her irreverent and colorful paintings, sculptures, and furniture. VIE joined her to celebrate at the celebrity-studded grand opening the night before the early-morning private shoot. Bergdorf ’s later partnered with the artist to create a prismatic new in-store restaurant, Palette. See the full shoot in our May 2018 issue!

The Feminine Hunter She is a mystery and a dream wrapped into one. The enchanting grounds of Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Recess, Connemara, Ireland, and the fairy tale–worthy designs of Christian Siriano inspire the woman who enjoys skeet shooting in the morning followed by high tea and petit fours in the afternoon. She is the huntress that lives in every woman, and the princess that lives in every girl. The VIE team was thrilled to produce this dreamy cover shoot across the pond. Dystopia Meets Utopia The year is 1955. The citizens of Florala, Alabama, start another small-town day. The birds chirp happily, and a cool breeze makes ripples flutter across Lake Jackson. South Walton Fashion Week 2016 winning female model Bella DeLeón, photographed by the incomparable Carlo Pieroni, is the picture-perfect example of retro chic while male winner Jordan Canamar is her mysterious love interest from the future. (Pieroni and his wife, Carol Wilson, were also judges for the SWFW 2016 model competition.) VIE was proud to sponsor SWFW 2016, presented by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County at 30Avenue and Grand Boulevard Town Center in South Walton, Florida. Since the inception of SWFW in 2013, VIE offered its winning Emerging Designer and Sheila Goode Models of the Year a fashion spread in the annual Culinary and Couture Issue (formerly Food and Fashion). Read the not-so-classic love story in “Dystopia Meets Utopia” in our March/April 2017 issue.

A Gatsby Summer Soiree In 2013, VIE christened its first show home, a custom residence in the rustic yet refined community of WaterColor on Scenic Highway 30-A. The home, named Maison de VIE, boasts Swarovski crystal chandeliers, dazzling tile mosaics, pecky cypress ceilings, fluttering window treatments, ample natural light, and much more. The creative collaboration between VIE, Coastal Elements Construction, Q Tile + Design Studio, and architect Tammy Massey was brought to life in conjunction with a robust list of local interior designers, artists, and other vendors. We celebrated the home on a sultry summer evening by hosting a Great Gatsby–themed open-house party catered by Roux 30a for all those involved. A cover shoot and fashion spread followed the next day, with cover girl Lauren Spring portraying the spellbinding Daisy Buchanan while models Beau Vermillion, Jared Kane, Caroline Watts, Connor Flanagan, Sasha Churinov, and Jordan Staggs made up the rest of the Gatsby cast. Tour the home in our September/ October 2013 issue.

An Animal Advocate Laurie Hood, the founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, Florida, became an animal advocate at a young age. Now a two-time VIE cover girl (see her other feature in our September/October 2014 issue), Hood embodies the determination and tireless effort that animal welfare advocates across the country put forth every day to help four-legged, furry, and feathered friends of all species. We were proud to share her journey and the expansion plan for Alaqua. The story “Big Dreams Require Big Vision was beautifully and boldly told by a fellow advocate, former CEO of The Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle. Hood is pictured with Mocha, a stunning Alaskan malamute/ Siberian husky mix who was available for adoption at the refuge. See more in the August 2018 issue.

A Publishing Legend Tina Brown, former editor-in-chief of Tatler, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker, founder of The Daily Beast, and author of The Diana Chronicles and The Vanity Fair Diaries, needs little introduction. On a mild October day, members of the VIE team met the illustrious Tina at her charming New York City apartment for a photo shoot for our first Women’s Issue. She is responsible for some of the most celebrated covers in magazine history—such as the groundbreaking and provocative Vanity Fair cover featuring then-pregnant Demi Moore in her birthday suit, which was orchestrated by photographer Annie Leibovitz. We were honored to feature this icon of global media and journalism and to promote her latest venture, Women in the World—a live media platform and annual summit dedicated to telling stories through the voices of women everywhere. See the December 2019 issue for the full story.

Finding Your Tribe There isn’t one way to dress to be “in style” anymore— it’s all about finding what you like and going for it! Our cover girl, Brittney Cole Kelley, thoroughly embodies that philosophy. She began creating and altering clothing and accessories in high school and college, and she ran an Etsy shop online as her first business. After she met Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line and the two got hitched, they realized their shared desire to support sustainable fashion made in the US was the perfect basis for a new business. Tribe Kelley, their lifestyle and clothing brand, now has store locations in Nashville and Grayton Beach, Florida, with the potential to spread across the country—or the globe—and build a tribe of like-minded fans and friends through fashion! Read more in our June 2019 issue.

Like the days of fireside chats and radio dramas, listening to entertainment has become cool again. If you’re into educational topics, motivational speaking, science fiction, celebrities, movies and TV, or literally anything else, there’s probably a podcast about it—and listening is free for most of them. In 2020, the creators of VIE embarked on a new adventure to make VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart & Soul. This podcast series features our CEO and editor-in-chief, Lisa Marie Burwell, hosting guests at VIE HQ and chatting about various topics. Each guest is an expert in his or her field, and each conversation is an entirely unscripted look into a different brilliant and beautiful mind.
T
he series kicked off with Laurie Hood, a nationally renowned animal rights activist and founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge—a one-hundred-acre no-kill animal sanctuary in Freeport, Florida. Other guests include fashion CEO Brittney Kelley of Tribe Kelley, film and TV host Shane Reynolds and his wife, photographer Romona Robbins Reynolds, fitness expert Zoltan Nagy, members of the VIE creative team, artist Nathan Alan Yoakum, Seaside Repertory Theater director Brook Stetler, and wounded warrior-turned-endurance athlete Geoff Speyrer. VIE Speaks began as a live speaker series in 2014, and this podcast is an extension of that, bringing together insightful artists, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and more to share their thoughts and stories.
Visit VIEmagazine.com/vie-speaks-conversationswith-heart-soul-podcast to listen now or find VIE Speaks on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, and other popular listening platforms.

THE BEACH HOUSE IS A NEW AND DIFFERENT KIND OF SHOW HOME, WHERE ALL THE BEST THINGS ABOUT BEING ON THE GULF COAST WILL COME TO LIFE.
The VIE Beach House – A Show Home, created in partnership with owners/developers Suzy Accola of Q Tile + Design Studio and her husband, Jim Accola of Coastal Elements Construction, comes to life in beautiful Seagrove Beach, Florida! VIE’s fourth home of inspired ideas, the VIE Beach House is designed with an ideal way of life in mind—one where its occupants can enjoy all that their natural surroundings have to offer while also spending quality time in a relaxing home oasis full of thoughtful design details, highquality furnishings, unique decor, and amenities that perfectly combine form and function. “The Beach House is a new and different kind of show home, where all the best things about being on the Gulf Coast will come to life,” says VIE founder/ editor-in-chief Lisa Burwell. “The home exemplifies the laid-back and casual yet elegant lifestyle that people enjoy here, whether they are on vacation or live here year-round. The project is a true community endeavor as we work with Suzy and Jim, a whole host of incredible local, national, and international design partners, and local nonprofits who will help us allocate a portion of the proceeds to our neighbors in need.” V I E MAGAZ INE . The VIE Lifestyle
The concept for the home was the brainchild of designer Suzy Accola, who worked with the Burwells and the VIE team on the magazine’s first show home, Maison de VIE, located in WaterColor, Florida. The incredible custom details throughout the home are inspired by Accola’s time living in varied yet equally stunning coastal regions, including Southern California, the Mediterranean, and Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Stay tuned for more updates on the show home’s grand reveal, coming soon! Learn more at VIEmagazine.com/beachshowhome.

VIE’s first show home creative collaboration was a work in progress between 2012 and 2013. The fruits of that labor were unveiled during a Great Gatsby–themed summer soiree and in the pages of our September/October 2013 issue. Please take a look back with us and savor the elegant home of inspirational ideas envisioned by Scott Kurfirst and Jim Accola of Coastal Elements Construction and Suzy Accola of Q Tile + Design Studio. The house was beautifully brought to life by the architect of record, Tammy Massey Architecture and Interior Design, along with landscape architect Chad Horton of Destin-based Horton Land Works. Additionally, a host of talented interior designers, artists, home and garden companies, and world-class lighting experts teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind home in WaterColor, Florida. The principals at Coastal Elements describe the home’s personality as “coastal elegance,” and we couldn’t agree more!

ince 2008, VIE magazine has been committed to telling “Stories with Heart and Soul.” The mission of founders Lisa and Gerald Burwell began in the geographical region between Apalachicola to Pensacola, which they affectionately named COLA 2 COLA. The regional lifestyle magazine grew from a quarterly to a monthly publication, and its reach has expanded to include the whole United States and a robust online presence at VIEmagazine.com, but the area that its team calls home is still dear to the hearts of VIE’s creators and readers alike. The genesis of our 2020 legacy coffee-table book, HOME—Inspirations for Home and Life, was a desire to write a love letter to the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast and the people who make it beautiful. Architects, interior designers, artisans, and chefs make their indelible marks on the area and all who visit it. A blend of Southern hospitality, an easygoing beach mentality, and sophisticated taste

Handpicked luxury sponsors mixed and mingled with Hollywood’s finest—a who’s who of celebrities, publicists, agents, directors, and writers. The event’s picturesque setting was evocative of the glamour that Hollywood is known for. Our showcase featured complimentary copies of the Winter 2011 issue, “me + vie” T-shirts, an exclusive VIE athletic towel by BareSkin, and a showcase of VIE behind-the-scenes videos and commercials. We also presented actress Jennifer Love Hewitt with complimentary gift certificates for a stay at Alys Beach and personal care from The Aesthetic Clinique, both located on Scenic Highway 30-A.

MAISON DE VIE GRAND OPENING On a balmy summer evening in June of 2013, Sasha Churinov and Lisa Marie Burwell
Maison de VIE—VIE’s first show home—gave a nod to the decadent 1920s era and celebrated the home’s grand opening in style. The tone for the private, intimate gathering was set by a vintage Rolls-Royce gracefully parked out front, courtesy of John Finch, owner of Sunshine Shuttle and Limousine. Guests were encouraged to wear attire inspired by The Great Gatsby, and somehow the sweltering air seemed to lift and a sultry vibe descended as the allure of the decade took over. The Gatsby Summer Soiree elegantly showcased the home during an evening of revelry, with white flowers, crystal vases, champagne fountains, and delectable passed hors d’oeuvres—a perfect tribute to christen the home.

T H E G E T D OW N VIE and the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County brought the heat to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, with a funkalicious dance party, The Get Down. The party officially kicked off South Walton Fashion Week on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Not your ordinary party, the disco-themed soiree was inspired by the Netflix original series of the same name and the ideas of VIE’s CEO/ editor-in-chief, Lisa Burwell. The very fashionable event featured many highlights, including Ophelia Swimwear models in roller skates, break dancing by Smoove Entertainment, music by DJ Rate, our signature VIEtini cocktails, and an appearance from artist and SWFW designer competition judge Ashley Longshore.

The event, held at The Listening Room Cafe on July 27, included fund-raising efforts to aid Alaqua Animal Refuge of Freeport, Florida. Performances by Ashley and Shannon Campbell, Billy Dawson, Stephen Ellrod, Scott Crompton, and more helped make the evening a huge success, along with a fashion presentation by Any Old Iron. Over $19,000 was raised for Alaqua, thanks to auction and raffle items from Annie Parker Jewelry, Graceful Rebel, KREWE, Caliza Restaurant, Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam, and more.

The little town that made a big difference...
There has been—and always will be—nostalgia for days gone by. For those simpler times when neighbors swapped stories over the fence, shopkeepers knew each customer by name, and families gathered on the porch to tell stories as the twilight faded into night. In one little corner of the world, there is still such a place. Here, life is as gentle as the sandy paths that lead down to the beach and as sweet as the candy-colored houses that line the streets. Here, no matter the season, it always feels like the easy days of summer, and time seems to slow down just enough to let people catch up with each other. In this place, the moments that are cherished are not grand, but small and rich with meaning. People take delight in simple pleasures. A sunset. An early morning walk on the beach. The joy of simply spending time together. This is Seaside.

It was 1981. President Ronald Reagan took office, Walter Cronkite signed off on CBS
Evening News for the last time, the space shuttle Columbia flew its first mission, and Raiders of
the Lost Ark hit cinemas as the debut of Indiana Jones. Also that year, on the Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida, a legacy was born.
I
n the late 1970s, Seaside founder Robert Davis and his girlfriend at the time (now his wife), Daryl, were on the set of a House Beautiful photo shoot for a home in Coconut Grove, Florida, when they met architects AndrĂŠs Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. The friendship they formed that day would echo greatness for decades to come as the two couples worked together to create the town of Seaside, Florida. Seaside, a charming hamlet with white-sand beaches overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, became the first example of New Urbanism town planning in the United States. What began as a few sharecropper cottages transported to the beach from Alabama became the vibrant tourist town full of renowned architecture, art, and culture that it is today. N
ew Urbanism became the manifestation of Americans’ desire to return to a simpler, more beautiful life after the boom of national industry and urban growth. The idea of a town where people could live, work, play, and form friendships in one safe, walkable area began to grow in the minds of Seaside’s creators. The Davises had spent many road trips exploring rural towns across the country, studying communities and lifestyles that embraced the philosophy that sometimes less is more. Family, neighborhood, and happiness were staples to be achieved in the creation of their new development. Robert’s grandfather, J.S. Smolian, had left him a pristine half-mile stretch of beach and the land just north of it. Many fond family memories had been made there while building sand castles, collecting shells, and watching the skies blaze with color as the sun sank beyond the Gulf. Robert knew it was the perfect place to build his New Urbanism oasis. The Davises, Duany, and Plater-Zyberk set out to reinvent American small-town life both in design and prosperity—a monumental feat that would literally take a village to accomplish.

“When Daryl and I first dreamed of creating a town, we imagined experiences such as those we cherished from my childhood summers on the beach with my family, and Daryl’s summers on streets filled with children and adults sitting on front stoops,” Robert has said. “We wanted Seaside to be a place where families could leave behind their workday lives, slow down, and play together.” He continues, “We were aware that we were making a statement about how American small town urbanism could and should be revived, and that Seaside, as a pilot project for the revival of traditional urbanism, was a critique of the soul-sapping sprawl that had covered over so many fields and forests by 1981. But it wasn’t until several years later that Seaside became the birthplace for a movement.”
“
WHEN DARYL AND I FIRST DREAMED OF CREATING A TOWN, WE IMAGINED EXPERIENCES SUCH AS THOSE WE CHERISHED FROM MY CHILDHOOD SUMMERS ON THE BEACH WITH MY FAMILY. As Seaside gained steam, Davis enlisted more award-winning architects to create homes and community hubs within its limits. Léon Krier had been a consultant and inspiration for Duany and Plater-Zyberk (who went on to form their own firm, DPZ) during their town planning. His vision to create sandy footpaths throughout the town was also a stroke of brilliance, and it is still ingrained in the town’s identity. Architects Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti, along with Steven Holl, have their visions (and names) stamped on the commercial hub in Central Square, the town’s epicenter.
This appreciation and implementation of great architecture in a seemingly quaint town by the beach further spread Seaside’s revolutionary message throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s. The Congress for the New Urbanism was founded in 1993 with the help of DPZ, celebrating the movement’s significance in twentiethcentury American architecture. The Seaside Prize was also formed as a weekendlong convention of some of the brightest minds in town planning and architecture, with lectures and events hosted by the Seaside Institute along with awards presented to visionaries who, through their designs, have changed the way people live. Along the sandy pathway to perfectly melded form and function, Seaside’s cultural identity also grew. Southern travelers were drawn to its idyllic family-owned shops, brick-paved streets, and tree-lined parks just as much as they were to the shimmering Gulf. The diverse homes planted throughout the eighty-acre community became homes away from home for those seeking a mix of privacy and neighborhood connections during their beach vacations. Today, families and visitors from around the world seek Seaside’s simple elegance for their getaways, relishing its hopeful exuberance and reverence for the “old ways” of living.

n 2021, as it prepares to celebrate entering its fourth decade, Seaside looks back on all that has been accomplished by its founders and community members while also boldly embracing all that the future holds.
The town has seen many changes in recent years. Visitors who know it only as the technicolor backdrop for the 1998 film The Truman Show would be surprised at its growth. But visionaries, by nature, are always improving upon their visions, and the creators of Seaside are no exception. A massive expansion to Bud & Alley’s Waterfront Restaurant and its surrounding outdoor courtyards is under way. The iconic Seaside Post Office was relocated in 2018 to Central Square’s northeast corner, making way for a planned tower designed by Léon Krier. The Lyceum and Seaside Neighborhood School have grown into a two-story classroom arcade with an events lawn and amphitheater.
identify Seaside as home. In a conversation I had with the world-renowned Danish planner Jan Gehl, we concluded that great places could only be created if clients and designers truly loved people. That sentiment is the essence of Seaside’s success, making beautiful places for all people to enjoy, where they can love and feel loved.” In short, Seaside has always been about family. The Davises’ son, Micah, has also opened his arms to the community his parents built. He now serves as president for the Seaside Community Development Corporation after moving to the area from San Francisco, where the family splits their time when they’re not enjoying sandy feet and fresh seafood along the Gulf Coast. As Seaside plans its fortieth-anniversary celebrations, keeping social distancing and COVID-19 safety precautions in mind, it also welcomes a new boutique
“
FOR ME, SEASIDE IS A LIVING AND CONTINUALLY CHANGING LABORATORY FOR MAKING PLACES THAT ADD TO HUMAN HAPPINESS. Dhiru A. Thadani of Thadani Architects + Urbanists, a former Seaside Prize recipient, Seaside artist in residence, and author of Visions of Seaside, has worked closely with Robert Davis since 2011 to help realize many of these plans and propel Seaside into the future. “I believe that the success of Seaside is based on love: Robert’s love for the land and the memories it holds; Daryl’s love for Robert and her willingness to move to a desolate part of Florida and aid him in realizing his dream; Andrés and Lizz’s love for humanity and their search for making a model sustainable community,” Thadani has said. “It shows in the homeowners and the millions of visitors who fell in love with the town the moment they set foot there and in the residents of Walton County who love the place and
hotel called The Court and Aperitivo, a new cocktail bar concept from Bud & Alley’s owner Dave Rauschkolb, coming in 2021. “We are so thrilled to continue growing and expanding the vision and the meaning of the Seaside lifestyle here along Scenic Highway 30-A,” says Erica Pierce, vice president at The Seaside Style. She and her team are spearheading the anniversary preparations, working alongside the Davis family and other town merchants. “Although we’ve faced many challenges in 2020, our community has remained a place where families can get away from it all and enjoy their time at the beach together. The lifestyle built here in Seaside is unlike any other. We are proud of what’s been created and so excited to see what the future holds.” V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 181

T
hat future will include improvements and changes for the town, but its leaders see this growth as an opportunity rather than a detriment. Change is permanent, as they say, and it’s a philosophy Seaside has always embraced wholeheartedly.
“For me, Seaside is a living and continually changing laboratory for making places that add to human happiness,” Robert Davis wrote in VIE in 2014. “As a holiday town, it has a head start on making people happy. They come here, prepared to relax and let their hair down, to play with their kids and become more childlike themselves. The other towns that I know well—including Rome, Italy, and San Francisco, California—have the ability to make people happy through the conviviality of urban life, the opportunity to share great cuisine with friends and family, and the beauty of their architecture and urban spaces. Daryl and I have sought to learn from great cities and towns and incorporate our knowledge into making Seaside a place that combines beauty, fun, and funkiness in equal measure. Though it has become chic and fashionable, like any successful holiday town from Nantucket to Portofino, it is inclusive and accessible to almost everyone who wants to visit for a few hours or a few days.” Cheers to forty more years of vision, love, and happiness, Seaside!

NEW STEP for TRADITION The Seaside School Virtual Half Marathon + 5K is now open for registration to participants around the world. In an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and prioritize the health and safety of the community and participants, the Seaside School, Inc. and Seaside School Foundation have decided to move forward with a virtual half marathon and 5K for the nineteenth annual event.
T
he virtual half marathon (13.1 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) will start on Sunday, February 14, 2021, and end at midnight on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Participants can run or walk at any pace during the race dates, then report the time to be added to the national results leaderboard. “With continued uncertainty, this virtual option will allow us to provide the safest possible experience for participants,” says Teresa Horton, executive director of the Seaside School Foundation. “This was an incredibly difficult and emotional process for our school and community as a whole to make. With that said, we need the community’s support this year more than ever. We look forward to virtually cheering on our runners in 2021!”
184 | C OMME MOR AT I V E 20 21
Registration cost for the 5K is $75 and the half marathon is $100. For participants to receive complimentary swag bags before race week, runners need to complete registration before January 17, 2021. “We’re looking forward to engaging with the runners virtually while still offering some perks of race day our participants have come to know and love!” says Mrs. Horton.
O
ne hundred percent of the funds raised from the virtual race go to the Seaside Schools Foundation, supporting the operating budget for the Seaside Neighborhood School and Seacoast Collegiate High School. The Seaside School is a tuition-free, public charter school serving students across Walton County. Last year the race raised more than ever, with proceeds totaling more than $600,000. “Our students and parents are extremely grateful for each and every race participant this year,” says Kim Mixson, principal of Seaside Neighborhood School. “This fund-raiser has become a part of our school culture, a stellar example of the Seaside Way in action. By applying creative thinking and problem-solving, we can keep this tradition alive and meet the needs of our growing school and community.”

SHARE THE BEAT Fund-Raising Event Hosted by Robert Redford and James Redford 2008 When we met James Redford in 2009, covering his Share the Beat fund-raiser for the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, he had recently received a liver transplant. His thankful spirit and zest for life were unmistakable. Our editor-in-chief and CEO, Lisa Burwell, wrote after the event, “James is the physical embodiment of humility and gratitude. He is serious about his foundation’s mission and its mandate to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. ‘Most people avoid this topic,’ he said, ‘as they don’t want to admit they will die, similar to how many perceive life insurance.’ He recounted how, in his twenties, he learned that he would need a liver transplant and said that he was amazed by the power of human generosity.” Thank you, James, for extending that generosity to many others through your work. Our team was privileged to have met such a talented and genuine man. James passed away on October 16, 2020, and our deepest sympathies go out to the Redford family.
