Discover Our 2021 Show Home

hen Suzy Accola, the owner and designer of Q Tile + Design Studio, approached me over a year ago to team up with her and her husband, Jim Accola, the owner of Coastal Elements Construction, for a second VIE show home in Seagrove Beach, Florida, I was excited about the possibilities. Our first show home partnership in 2013, Maison de VIE: The House of Life located in WaterColor, Florida, was memorable and impactful for the magazine as our readers love a show home for inspiration ideas. With a Great Gatsby–inspired cover photo shoot and feature complete with a themed party channeling the 1920s, we celebrated the home’s completion in style. We branded the 2021 show home “The VIE Beach House” as it truly is a celebration of the lifestyle on and around Scenic Highway 30-A, and the Accolas had a clear vision for what they wanted to create. The home feels very fresh and new with an interesting perspective on living by the beach, as you will see when you turn the pages of this issue.

We held a ground breaking and house blessing in January of 2020 to consecrate this endeavor under the wings of Psalm 27. We were blind to the fact the worldwide pandemic would arrive only six weeks later.

The grand plan to present a show home to our readers with an opening party and tour was derailed as COVID-19 made its presence known, creating unforeseen challenges for all of us to endure. We were also met with delays thanks to the virus, but we forged ahead to bring you the VIE Beach House. Now we get to marvel at the craftsmanship of the architecture by Greg Jazayeri, the construction by Coastal Elements, the spectacular custom tile, lighting, and design by Q Tile + Design Studio, the furnishings and decor by Lovelace Interiors, Betsey Mosby Interior Design, and Summer House Lifestyle, the photographic art by Jonah Allen Studio, the copper lanterns by Bevolo

Gas & Electric Lights, the indoor and outdoor furnishings and accessories by Maison30a Home + Garden, the windows and exterior doors by Frank’s Cash and Carry, and much more. The home is truly a stunning collaboration of art and design.

James Watts with The Beach Group represented the sale of the home, and it was with great pleasure that the developers were able to donate a portion of that sale to community nonprofits Food For Thought and The Sonder Project. We are thrilled to know that the family now residing in the home completes the story we began—from an idea through construction to the completion of the home that will now be lived in and loved. We hope and pray that the new owners have a special blessing on their home as a testament to all the hard work and love that went into making it.

Jazayeri, and a whole host of talented interior designers, furniture makers, construction experts, and more. And now the home is ready for its debut within this issue of VIE VIE!!

The sense of serenity and luxury is unparalleled as you step into the vaulted foyer of the VIE Beach House – A Show Home in the quaint residential community of Seagrove Beach, Florida. This brand-new single-family residence showcases a beach-house-meets-bohemian style designed to promote the ideal coastal life. Custom finishes and furnishings, inspired artwork, and top-of-the-line amenities converge in this peaceful oasis inspired by nature. The homesite is tucked into the area’s lush landscape, steps from scenic trails and one block from the white-sand beach and Gulf of Mexico.

“The home’s design and decor are an eclectic mix of artistic expression,” says designer Suzy Accola of Q Tile + Design Studio in Grayton Beach, Florida.

She and her husband, Jim Accola, are the owners and developers of the project, collaborating with topnotch vendors and the VIE publishing team to bring the VIE Beach House vision to life. “We hope that the homeowners will see an element in every room that inspires them not only from a design aspect but also introspectively, making a positive impact on their daily lives.” The Accolas also have a heart for their community, with a portion of the net proceeds from the home’s sale aiding local nonprofit Food For Thought and international humanitarian efforts through The Sonder Project.

have so much respect for the Accolas after working with them six years ago on our first show home, Maison de VIE, in the WaterColor community,” says Lisa Burwell, the CEO, founder, and editor-in-chief of VIE. In addition to that project, VIE produced the Modern Minimalist show home in Santa Rosa Beach and the Legacy Home in WaterSound Beach, Florida, making the Beach House its fourth rendition of a show home. “When Suzy approached me about teaming up for another show home and shared her vision, I was intrigued at the thought of working together again. We’re neighbors, and the home is located near ours, so it sounded like a dream creative project. Little did we know that COVID-19 would make an entrance only a few months after the official ground breaking and blessing of the home by our neighbor Pastor Gary Wingo. The pandemic put challenges and more than a few obstacles in our path.

We were met with supplier delays and other challenges of dealing with the virus, both personally and tangentially. Like everyone else, we had to pivot, solve arising problems, and pray on how to navigate in very uncertain times.”

On the upstairs landing, a charming coffee bar styled by Q Tile + Design Studio welcomes guests and features an Artistic Tile antique mirror backsplash. The custom interior doors were designed by Q Design Studio and Coastal Elements Construction.

Designer Melissa Skowlund and her team at Summer House Lifestyle worked closely with the VIE Beach House visionaries to furnish and decorate the incredible great room, which creates the central living space in the home. The living room’s reclaimed wood beams are artful, ascending toward the heavens as they support a spacious vaulted ceiling. Below, a gas fireplace flickers in the cooler months, creating a unique ambience between the indoors and out as one looks outside upon the plunge pool and surrounding outdoor living space. The view is unobstructed, thanks to the eighteen-foot Euro-Wall Multi Slide door system

by Frank’s Cash and Carry, who also provided the arched Clark Hall front door and the JELD-WEN windows throughout the home.

The space’s palette is inspired by the beach, with soft cream and sand hues reminding both residents and guests of what lies just a short walk or golf-cart ride to the south along the shore. Pops of blue tones, gray, and natural textures further imitate the sea and sky that people flock from all over the country to see here.

“We were determined to see the completion of the home through to the end,” Burwell says. “Thank you to our partners and sponsors for making this one of the most authentic and collaborative endeavors I’ve had the pleasure of working on. It renewed my faith in the resilience, perseverance, and fellowship of our business partners and our neighbors, all committed and working toward a common goal.”

One exciting component includes the energy-efficient walls, built by Coastal Elements with Fox Blocks foam technology. This system allows the builders to insert a thick layer of insulation into the interior and exterior walls reinforced with steel, wood, and concrete. They are incredibly strong and protect the home from the elements, keeping the interior comfortable at 68 degrees year-round without heating or cooling.

The living room flows naturally into a dining space, where the star of the show is a rustic wooden table with seats for eight from Summer House Lifestyle—perfect for family meals or intimate gatherings with friends. A breakfast nook with banquette seating and a custom table designed by Maison30a Home + Garden is the ideal place for having a leisurely breakfast, reading, or working from home.

he kitchen, which completes the great room and the central “hub” of the home’s activity, features custom cabinetry collaborated on by Suzy Accola and Cindy McCarley and built by Grimes Cabinets. The room’s open shelving and screened doors are the perfect “ocean blue” hue to match the spacious BlueStar twin refrigerators and gas range from Mobile Appliance. A walk-in butler’s pantry features a chevron-patterned white oak door that matches others found throughout the home, created by the team at Coastal Elements and Q Design Studio and built by Coastal Elements.

The pantry and kitchen backsplash are extra special—a closer look reveals beautiful patterned, custom-glazed Mediterra mosaics from Q Tile, a theme that continues throughout the home and carriage house. Custom tile abounds everywhere, from the front entry step, the mudroom floor, and the laundry room backsplash to the bathrooms and the pool.

The custom lighting pieces, also by Q Design Studio, bring aspects of luxury and creativity to the home. Steel mixed with milky quartz, Murano glass, and a delicate blend of jewelry chain in thought-provoking shapes are found in the foyer, in the great room, above the kitchen island, in the powder room, and in the master bathroom.

The star of the downstairs master bath is the custom mosaic by Q Tile + Design Studio and New Ravenna tile, reinforcing the Zen vibe of the home. The master suite and bathroom feature custom privacy curtains by Drape98.

From the kitchen, step through the foyer featuring a gorgeous coastal landscape photo by local artist Jonah Allen, and don’t forget to look up—the chain-and-metal chandelier by Q Tile + Design Studio was hand decorated, creating a bit of bling among the arches of the ceiling. Architectural designer Gregory D. Jazayeri says the ceilings were a particularly challenging part of the home’s design. They needed to be tall enough to reflect the residence’s luxurious nature while also creating those custom details that make the Beach House so unique.

The laundry room off the foyer features custom ARTO tile flooring and scalloped Sabine Hill wall mosaic by Q Tile + Design Studio and cabinetry rendered by Cindy McCarley that hides the washer and dryer, along with plenty of storage space. It reflects the charcoal-and-white theme of the master suite across the hallway, whose impressive closet has built-in shelves and drawers. The suite is bathed in serenity, with bright white walls and the fabrics, bedding, and furnishings

by Summer House Lifestyle. The metal bed frame plays against the white to create a sleeping space overlooking the pool deck via a large window with flowing curtains from Drape98. It also complements the black-and-white theme in the master bath. Its New Ravenna custom tile floor is one of the home’s most unique accents, setting a peaceful tone with Paul McCartney’s lyrics, “There will be an answer, let it be.”

Suzy shares, “Once we committed to the lyrics in the tile, solidified the bold color for the kitchen, and pulled together world maps, bees, and other tile patterns, the wheels really

The southern guest bedroom also has a surprise in store with its bathroom design that is sure to gain some buzz—bee-themed tile in honeycomb-inspired patterns offer a playful feel, as does the circular window.

“Much of my work is driven by the ideas of ‘fun’ and ‘balance,’ where families can get away,” says architectural designer Gregory D. Jazayeri. “Now, thanks to all that we have seen in the past year, I find that my firm is designing spaces that are not merely vacation homes, but homes that our clients are relocating to. Yes, the resort feel is there, but more importantly, there is a level of functionality and intimacy. Many of my clients say to me, ‘If I can work from anywhere, why not work at the beach?’”

This was the mind-set that accompanied Jazayeri’s design of the VIE Beach House – A Show Home just off the Scenic Highway 30-A corridor on the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast. The custom luxury home is unlike any other around, featuring innovative construction materials and processes such as insulated concrete forms, plus a range of luxury amenities and appliances. Its position, tucked into the natural forest growth of Seagrove Beach but just a short walk from the dazzling white sand and shining Gulf of Mexico, gives it a real “best of both worlds” feel. At the same time, its design and interiors are inspired by coastal environments around the globe. Developer and designer Suzy Accola of Q Tile + Design Studio says her travels and time living in France and near the coast in California played a role in her visions for this one-of-a-kind home, and Jazayeri echoes her sentiments.

“I value innovative design. Because travel is so elemental to my creative process, it excites me to bring home the new methods and materials I’ve seen in my travels,” he says. “What’s awesome is that my wife is also a designer, so we’re constantly reinventing spaces in our homes. I really enjoy experimenting with new techniques, figuring out the challenges and surprises, and then sharing what I’ve learned with my clients and colleagues.”

THIS HOME IS A S HOWCAS E HOME–A GALLERY OF WHAT OUR AREA’S MOST TALENTED DES IGNERS HAVE TO OFFER. Having vacationed in the Northwest Florida area from the early 1980s until he became a full-time resident in 1994, Jazayeri has long felt the environment there was worth preserving. A home should work with the landscape, blending with and taking cues from it rather than competing with it. The VIE Beach House’s natural elements and soft color palette reflect this ethos.

“From the onset of this project, we all understood that our one nonnegotiable was inviting the nature that surrounds us inside the home,” Jazayeri says. “By designing around the beautiful environment that surrounds us, we created a living space where the boundaries of the indoor and outdoor spaces of the home are blurred.”

As evidenced in the folding Euro-Wall doors provided by Frank’s Cash and Carry, the cabinets rendered by Cindy McCarley, the Bevolo outdoor gas lanterns, the interiors by Summer House Lifestyle, Betsey Mosby Interior Design, Lovelace Interiors, and Maison30a, and the custom tile and lighting designs by Q Tile + Design Studio throughout the home, each room and show home partner puts the luxury coastal mind-set on display. The result is truly stunning. “This home is a showcase home—a gallery of what our area’s most talented designers have to offer. Usually, I am not as intimately involved with design selections through and through, but being part of such a talented working team inspired the way I wanted to showcase each artist in the home’s overall design. Its uniqueness rests on a new, reimagined way of looking at what Seagrove has become while still tipping one’s hat to the Old Seagrove feel and what Old Florida seaside living is all about.”

The home’s overall feel is restorative, Jazayeri shares. It’s an elegant home for the new owners, who hail from Wisconsin and can now experience the best of 30-A

living, from the exciting activities nearby to the relaxing oasis that is their own backyard. Jazayeri and his team are also excited to meld those two ideas further as they open a new office in Blue Mountain Beach along 30-A this spring. We are sure they have many incredible projects to come!

o visual artist Jonah Allen, water represents transformation. From the time he first surfed at age ten, Allen has obsessed over the way water ebbs and flows, takes the shape of its surroundings, and ultimately connects all living creatures . . .

Allen hopes to inspire a realization in people that our planet’s waterways are sacred and must be protected.”

This excerpt from the 2020 coffee-table book, HOME —Inspirations for Home and Life by VIE, is just a short summation of the soul behind Santa Rosa Beach, Florida–based photographer and videographer Jonah Allen’s work. His gorgeous fine-art photography includes prints up to 114 × 70 inches in a variety of styles, shapes, and materials. As he prepares to open his gallery this spring, Allen also graciously donated two pieces of art to the VIE Beach House – A Show Home located in Seagrove Beach, a block from the undulating Gulf of Mexico that inspires him daily. You might also recognize his aerial photography as the branded “face” of the Beach House as his shot titled A-Frame appeared in the home’s teaser ad campaign for the past year.

“When VIE approached me to showcase my photographic art for the feature image of the show home and to install numerous pieces in the home, I was honored that my work would be a focal point,” Allen says. “I chose two large pieces of art: one as a statement right when you walk in the main entrance and one above the

bed in the carriage house. Both are part of my Receded Time series and evoke feelings of sublimity and serenity. They were also perfect fits for the home, thanks to the aqua color palettes and the subject matter, which parallel the coastal theme.”

Using drone technology and sometimes even going up in a helicopter himself, Allen often creates his largescale artworks by taking multiple shots, sometimes spanning miles, and digitally stitching them together to capture a unique moment in time. Other pieces in his portfolio provide an intimate view of the ripples, recesses, and peaks of the Gulf ’s waves.

“When I make each photograph out in the ocean, I experience very intense emotions,” Allen shares. “If a collector or viewer can see my work and experience a similar emotion, I’ve accomplished my goal. The work becomes a window into the sublime.

“My artwork is not solely aesthetic; there is a concept behind every series,” he continues. “The two pieces in the VIE Beach House focus on sand’s ability to show time. Sand is a medium that leaves a visual trace of the element that altered it. Whether it’s weathered, eroded, or deposited, there is evidence of what has taken place around the sand. In these images, the history of things is available in a single moment—something I strive to achieve in a photograph. To be able to look at a still image and see an indication of time is captivating.”

indy McCarley Designs has morphed into a lifestyle brand that includes interior design services, but the Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, professional is best known for her custom kitchen designs. As one of a handful of NKBAcertified kitchen and bath designers in the area, she stands apart from others by creating all of her kitchen drawings by hand instead of digitally. It gives her clients a colorful and personal look at what their future kitchen could be. “There is just something special about seeing ideas hand drawn on paper as opposed to a computer drawing,” McCarley shares. “Through my cabinetmaker, the renderings do eventually end up in digital format, but I think my clients can best envision their dream kitchen in my drawings.”

orking closely with developers Suzy and Jim Accola on the design, McCarley rendered the beautiful open-concept kitchen for the VIE Beach House and collaborated on its layout featuring the ocean-blue cupboards built by Grimes Cabinets. “I loved working on the Beach House show home because I love working with Suzy and Jim,” McCarley says. “I have learned so much from working with the two of them. It’s nice to work with such good people, and they are both so talented! Suzy dreams it up, I draw it for us to see, and Jim builds it.”

Kitchens are not her only specialty. McCarley drew up the plans for much of the cabinetry and other built-ins showcased in the VIE Beach House, including the banquette seating, the mudroom bench and cabinets, the laundry room cabinets, the impressive master closet, and all the bathroom cabinets. Working on custom homes like this allows McCarley to showcase her multifaceted talent, as she uses her creative mind to provide beautiful and functional concepts that stand out from other residences.

“The VIE Beach House is just so special! Every single detail is perfect,” McCarley says. “I especially love the neighborhood the house sits in because it’s a real neighborhood, comprising mostly full-time residents. I love the woods behind the house, and who doesn’t want to live on a cul-de-sac?” With the rustic yet sleek details and decor featuring natural textures and elements, the kitchen—along with the rest of the home—reflects this love and connection to nature.

It will be a busy year ahead, McCarley predicts, as she has experienced an increase in business despite the pandemic, likely thanks to people spending more time at home and wishing to either build along the coast or improve their existing houses. “Like many folks in our area, I am beyond humbled and thankful,” she says.

hen considering the exterior lighting for the new VIE Beach House – A Show Home in Seagrove Beach, Florida, VIE magazine founders Lisa and Gerald Burwell and show home developers Suzy and Jim Accola knew that Bevolo was their first choice. The brand, established in the Big Easy in 1945, produces handcrafted copper lighting for homes across the US and beyond. Their riveted metalwork has a reputation for standing the test of time, with some of the original Bevolo lights still shining in the New Orleans French Quarter after decades of being in use.

For the VIE Beach House, Bevolo says, “We used a variety of lights on this home, as we often do.” The hanging lantern by the pool deck entry is Bevolo’s Original French Quarter design on a yoke bracket, while the wall sconces are the brand’s Governor lantern. For the overhead areas, Bevolo provided its Warehouse District lantern on a gooseneck bracket. “All of these lanterns are made out of the highest grade American copper, and each bracket is made with a naval brass material to hold up to these conditions,” Bevolo adds. “Florida is brutal on metal. Some homeowners have told us they had been swapping out lights annually before they came to us! We pride ourselves on making lifetime fixtures that, in the long run, will save you time and money.”

Celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2020,

Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights experienced disruptions due to COVID-19 but has been working to continue its production and sales efforts safely. “We certainly hope to get back to the point where our employees can celebrate our anniversary the proper way this year,” Bevolo says. “For our customers, we are putting a special emphasis on the simple complimentary design service we offer. It is so easy with today’s technology to forward a plan or send in a photo of your house. We select the perfect size and style of lantern to complement the home based on the architecture so that it never goes out of style. This customer service is a large reason we are in all fifty states and sixty-seven countries to date.”

RUSTIC TEXTURES AND COASTAL HUES ABOUND IN THE VIE BEACH HOUSE – A SHOW HOME, EVOKING A MODERN BEACH VIBE THAT IS BOTH TIMELY AND TIMELESS. With a vaulted ceiling featuring reclaimed wood beams sourced by developers Jim and Suzy Accola of Coastal Elements Construction and Q Tile + Design Studio, respectively, the home’s open-plan great room encompasses the living room, dining area, and kitchen.

But transforming the blank canvas into a livable abode for the new homeowners required a team. Suzy Accola worked with interior designer Melissa Skowlund to bring life to the show home’s main living area, the master bedroom, and the upstairs bunk room.

specializes in services that include custom wallpaper and fabrics as well as full-service interior design through her firm, Melissa Skowlund Interiors. The boutique, a staple of Grayton Beach design for ten years, offers an array of items, from home furnishings to gifts, accessories, and clothing. “We added Design Bar within Summer House to provide a serene, ordered place where our clients can come to be inspired and get away from the stress of building or renovating their homes,” Skowlund explains. “I create storyboard examples for them so they can easily see what their new space could become. It’s been one of the greatest ways for both me and my clients to work through the creative process together.” This year, Summer House Lifestyle will continue to expand its offerings with new designer lines and services as well as Farrow & Ball paints.

“The VIE Beach House fits perfectly with the clean, fresh lines and custom looks we provide our customers in Grayton Beach and beyond,” Skowlund says. “This was a great collaboration of classic and organic design

Inspired by the nearby Gulf of Mexico as well as coastal living around the globe, the Beach House was intended

“Our vision was to provide a clean, comfortable feel throughout the Beach House,” Skowlund says of working with Suzy on the home. “We started with the living room, which features a beach-inspired color palette with cream fabrics, blue and gray accents, and a lot of natural textures in the tables, pillows, and more. These outdoor-inspired elements extend into the adjoining dining room with the beautiful wooden table, then even further into the kitchen with the woven barstools. With all of these together, you get a seamless continuation from the time you walk through the foyer into the kitchen and great room.”

WE LIVE FOR GETTING TO KNOW THE PEOPLE WHOSE HOMES WE WILL BE FILLING WITH THINGS TO MAKE THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE, LOVED, AND TRULY LIKE THEMSELVES. to exemplify a lifestyle at one with nature. Ample sunlight, natural wood beams, and unobstructed views into the oasis-like pool area and trees surrounding the backyard make it easy to connect with the outdoors— as do the short walk to dazzling white-sand beaches and trails through the flatwoods.

That coastal clean feeling is perhaps best felt in the serene master bedroom, where a metal canopy bed with soft white fabrics is so inviting, one might be tempted to stay in bed all day and admire the pool from the large picture window. The master bath features a massive tub in addition to a walk-in shower, gorgeous natural light from the overhead windows along two walls, and, of course, a custom floor mosaic by Q Tile + Design Studio. Its Beatles-inspired design echoes the soothing lyrics, “There will be an answer, let it be.”

Skowlund adds, “I love touches of brass and antique tables juxtaposed against new construction, as we did in the VIE Beach House. The spaces are elegant yet understated, with a creative twist.”

The upstairs bunk room is a dreamy getaway for kids of all ages. Four bunk beds offer plenty of space to rest, read, and play, while the open area is perfect for

Partners games and movie nights. A soft blue palette draws inspiration not only from the Gulf but also from the blue skies that can be seen from the room’s several large windows.

The room plays well with others, adjoined by the hallway to the map-inspired full bathroom and, beyond that, two guest bedrooms. It’s a home that fosters community and family, just as Skowlund strives to do for all her design clients.

“The relationships I have formed at the beach have become lifelong, as many of my clients have become friends. For some, I am working on their fourth or fifth homes, both at the beach and around the country,” Skowlund says, looking forward to her firm’s next projects along Scenic Highway 30-A and beyond. These include two new construction homes in Alys Beach, two in Kaiya Beach Resort, a twenty-milliondollar renovation in Greenwich, Connecticut, a home on a four-hundred-acre horse farm near Nashville, and a Park City ski lodge. She is also considering taking on an extensive remodel in Palm Beach, Florida. “I do love a remodel. I enjoy the challenge and getting to flex my creative muscles, taking a home in need of a refresh and making it new again with the help of my team. We live for getting to know the people whose homes we will be filling with things to make them feel comfortable, loved, and truly like themselves.”

When Betsey Mosby changed careers from being a full-time CPA to working as a consultant for a real estate firm about a decade ago, she learned a lot about another business she had always had an interest in—interior design. “I worked on budgeting for large-scale construction projects and forayed into selecting finishes and more,” she recalls.

“I had always really loved design; in fact, my initial college plans included majoring in it, but I ended up at the University of Mississippi where that major was not an option.”

T

hanks to the expertise she gained from the real estate and development field, Mosby felt confident enough to venture back to her love of design.

“I’m so thankful for my business background and majors in finance and accounting,” she says. “I think that because of that experience, I felt so prepared to own a business. I wasn’t intimidated by so many of the aspects that I think can feel overwhelming for a lot of entrepreneurs. To further my knowledge of the design industry, I took classes to learn CAD and space planning, and most importantly, apprenticed under several amazing designers, to whom I owe so much, before I opened my own firm in 2014.”

etsey Mosby Interior Design opened its doors in Jackson, Mississippi, and the rest is history, the designer says.

The brand has grown to seven team members and opening a retail location last year. Mosby and her team have done work in prestigious homes and businesses throughout Mississippi and Florida and even as far north as Greenwich Village, New York. Along the Gulf Coast, her work can be seen in the affluent 30-A area in Rosemary Beach and nearby communities. “We love the light and breezy, beachy aesthetic,” Mosby says. “In general, my design work focuses on light palettes and airy textures, and I think most of our clients are drawn to us for those elements. Obviously, they translate well into a coastal vibe. We provide a high-end, full-service design product that is catered to the budget, needs, and lifestyle of our client.”

Mosby’s designs were featured in VIE magazine’s September 2018 and August 2019 home-related issues. After she worked with VIE Beach House – A Show Home developer Suzy Accola of Q Tile + Studio, Mosby was chosen to provide furnishings and decor for two upstairs bedrooms in the Seagrove Beach show home. Her brand’s design aesthetic played perfectly with the home’s bright, open concept with ample natural light and unique accents.

“The first bedroom we designed for the Beach House, a guest room, came together with heavy inspiration from a Billy Baldwin bed canopy I’ve always loved!”

Mosby shares. “We mimicked that design with white linen window valances and drapes to add an interesting textural feel to the room without overwhelming it. Suzy from Q Tile had selected a deep teal tile for the adjoining bathroom, so we pulled

Lisa Burwell and the team do such a fabulous job and are, in my opinion, some of the best in the business. I also adore James Watts, who was the realtor for the project—he has such a great eye and promoted the details so well, even throughout the pandemic shutdown. Likewise, I was so impressed by the beautiful tile selections and general hard work put in by Q Tile, and the other designers involved are all such talents. I loved seeing their rooms come together and was honored to be in their company.”

With the Beach House completed and now home to a family newly transplanted to the Gulf Coast, Betsey Mosby and her team are looking forward to many other exciting projects for the rest of 2021 and beyond. They include some new product launches, a new website, some significant commercial designs— which she teased but can’t reveal yet—and more gorgeous custom homes on the Gulf Coast along Scenic Highway 30-A.

mostly neutrals for the bedding except for one beautiful Schumacher fabric (called Enchanted Garden) that has hues of the same deep teal mixed in, making sure all the pieces flowed together. The side tables and light added a natural woven element to the space, and my favorite pops of color were the pink Fermoie lampshades that add a little whimsy.”

Mosby also decorated the upstairs-level master bedroom. “Here, we went with a more neutral vibe,” she says.

“I like a master bedroom to feel like a reprieve, and for this one, we focused on that feeling. We picked soft white bedding piped in a seafoam color that is perfect for the beach. To connect the room to the nearby coast, we used one of my favorite palm prints

by Schumacher as a pop of interest on the bed. We kept the rest of the room neutral by focusing on tonal, abstract art above the bed and a white bolster in front of the Euro shams.”

“I love to visit the beach and love to work there too,” Mosby says. “Days are just better on 30-A, even if they are full of work from sunup to sundown. My team and I often joke that when we are traveling, it seems glamorous—but we really only see the beach from our clients’ balconies!” She laughs. “I have a little girl and a full workload back home, so I’m rarely able to spend extended time when traveling for work, but a day at the beach is better than a day just about anywhere else! I love the relaxed, laid-back vibe of the area and the happy workdays it creates.”

fter being based on the Gulf Coast with my custom furniture design studio and working with some of the top designers in the area and country for the past twenty years, the opportunity presented itself to create a retail store like no other,” says Christopher Bailey, the owner and principal designer at Maison30a Home + Garden. This luxury home decor showroom in Panama City Beach, Florida, takes the garden center concept to the next level with custom furniture and home decor, pottery, lighting, and accessories in a selection that can suit any style or taste.

ailey and his team worked with VIE and the developers of the VIE Beach House – A Show Home in Seagrove Beach, Florida, to create a range of custom pieces that fit the modern, bohemian-chic style of the house. Their featured works in the home include a beautiful custom banquette table in the kitchen, created using a repurposed midcentury-modern base that Maison30a sandblasted and powder coated with matte white paint and then capped with a custom French zinc tabletop. “The final outcome of this design was a one-of-a-kind piece incorporating the clean lines of the midcentury-modern era and the elegance of a classic bar-top material used for centuries in French cafés,” Bailey shares.

“A home is not complete without the perfect pair of entryway pots to define your space and style,” he continues. “They create a welcoming first impression of your home.” Maison30a provided pottery for several areas throughout the VIE Beach House, including the main entrance, which boasts a pair of modern organic white concrete planters with a smooth finish. For the outdoor living area on the pool deck, Maison30a’s Rustic Tuscan collection featuring a distressed whiteand-gray textural finish was the perfect fit.

The brand’s Modernist concrete dining table, with its bold, monolithic lines and white matte concrete finish, is also a star on the pool deck, offering the perfect spot to enjoy an outdoor meal or game night with the family. “It is the perfect table for both indoor and outdoor applications,” says Bailey, “made completely from molded and sculpted white concrete that is polished and sealed. We also offer this design in an elegant black matte concrete finish.” The chairs are from Maison30a’s Kubu Rattan collection, with Sunbrella fabric cushions.

Other Maison30a accessories, such as organic, modern-shaped bowls and vases, make an appearance throughout the home. In the front yard, they also provided concrete bollard spheres that offset the yard from the street and highlight the front landscaping by Horton Land Works. These bollards are locally made at Maison30a and are available in multiple sizes.

“I feel that our products and hand-built pieces are the perfect fit for this home,” Bailey says. “We pride

hen curating a team of creative professionals to collaborate with her on the VIE Beach House – A Show Home in Seagrove Beach, Florida, owner and developer Suzy Accola had a clear vision for the dream home she was creating and knew exactly what she wanted. She had worked with Lovelace Interiors in the past on several projects via her Grayton Beach– based tile and lighting boutique and design firm, Q Tile + Design Studio, and knew from the inception of the show home that she wanted Lovelace Interiors on her team. They became part of the small but dynamic group of interior designers who collaborated on various rooms and spaces of the VIE Beach House to bring Accola’s vision to life. Their mission was to inspire all who stepped inside the home with a sense of peace and comfort, similar to what they might feel when putting their toes into the sugar-white sand of the nearby beaches.

everal planning meetings ensued with the show home team, with Lovelace Interiors designers Lindsay Cannon and Brooke Williams as the dream team assigned by owner and principal designer Susan Lovelace to work on this exciting project. “We love what we do every day while creating for our clients, but there is something special about working on a show home,” says Lovelace. “Its intent is to highlight our design acumen while working with the developer to bring their concept to fruition. We enjoyed working on the project and are proud of the finished product.”

“We asked the Lovelace Interiors team to design the carriage house above the garage,” adds Accola. “It’s hard to work with a smaller space, but I love what the team was able to create and thought it was appropriate to the style and size of the studio-style space.

It’s a serene little retreat within the overall Beach House getaway.”

The carriage house is welcoming, with a Bevolo gas lantern at its entrance and a kitchenette featuring custom tile by Q Tile + Design Studio. Lovelace Interiors went with a relaxing, neutral palette of cream and gray tones that evoke a spa-like feel. Soft and cozy textures, such as sherpa and faux fur, “pop” in unexpected ways, especially when paired with the natural wood and beachy textures inspired by the world outside. “Since it is a small space, we wanted to create a separation of space yet not have too many furniture pieces,” says Williams. “The console table behind the sofa defines the two spaces and offers multiple functions—this piece can be used as a desk or as a dining space, with the stools for seating stored below.” Cannon and Williams drew further inspiration from the home’s exterior and the custom tile selected by Q Tile + Design Studio, utilizing classic design elements and principles throughout the carriage house to create a natural flow. Above the bed, a beach landscape by photographer Jonah Allen reminds us that the Gulf of Mexico is just a short walk from the home. The finished design is a mix of soothing luxury and rustic beauty.

“In life, as in business, maintaining your brand’s standards and having a great reputation are the most important things I keep in mind and try to live by every day,” Lovelace says. “My design clientele is extensive, and most of my clients hire us to design their homes locally, like the Beach House, but we also have projects nationwide. It’s a fun process to think about where and how your interior design will fit into its environment.”

Lovelace’s private residence, located nearby just off the Choctawhatchee Bay, also exemplifies this coast-meetscouture style. As seen in our inaugural coffee-table

rank’s Cash and Carry, born out of necessity, began in 1970. Frank Schissler III needed a dishpan for making pickles and thought it was a shame that you couldn’t buy anything in the small rural town of Freeport, Florida, which lies just north of Choctawhatchee Bay and just a short drive from the shimmering Gulf of Mexico. His father had recently passed and he had a bit of money—so he began the family business affectionately called Frank’s. Celebrating its fiftieth anniversary last year was a joyous occasion, and many friends and partners visited the Freeport store on November 6, 2020, to commemorate the accomplishment.

The original Frank’s hardware, homeware, and building supply company was located on what is now Highway 331, in the old Dixie Dandy building. In the early 1980s, Abbie Schissler, Frank’s widow, built a new building, which housed the post office and Frank’s on Highway 20 (she had been the postmaster for Freeport). Today, Frank’s also boasts a Grayton Beach location built in 1999, and four generations of the family work with the business. The lumberyard and window and door salesroom are in downtown Freeport, and both locations include a hardware and paint store. Frank’s caters to commercial as well as residential customers. From chicken feed to interior doors, framing packages to Benjamin Moore paints, they’ve got you covered on all things home improvement, construction, and more.

THE SHOW HOME WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR FRANK’S TO SHOWCASE SEVERAL OF OUR CUSTOM PRODUCTS. ONE WORD CAN DESCRIBE WHAT MAKES THE HOME SPECIAL: HEART.

I

t was a natural fit that Frank’s Cash and Carry should be involved in the VIE Beach House – A Show Home located in Seagrove Beach, just about four miles from the Grayton store. The Frank’s team has developed a great relationship with homebuilders Jim Accola and Scott Kurfirst at Coastal Elements Construction over the years, explains Nick Anderson, Frank’s window and door sales executive. “Both parties share a common vision, trust, and a desire to excel in fine homebuilding,” he says. “The show home was a great opportunity for Frank’s to showcase several of our custom products. One word can describe what makes the home special: heart. From the very beginning, Jim, Suzy, and Frank’s poured all we had into this project. From the time you walk through the front door, the amount of detail you see is second to none. Jim and Suzy’s passion and style have truly created a one-of-a-kind house that is worthy of being called the VIE Show Home.”

Jokingly, Anderson says that Frank’s most significant contribution to the Beach House was time, but the brand’s beautiful custom windows and doors are proof that it was time well spent. They worked closely with the developers to determine the best products to fit the unique architectural design.

“For instance,” Anderson says, “on the front elevation, Jim had a vision for large pieces of glass—not only for an abundance of natural light but also to create a contrast between the black frame of the windows and the white stucco. We were able to achieve this with JELD-WEN’s custom aluminum-clad windows.”

The front entry, with an elegant custom door flanked by beautiful Bevolo gas lanterns, was also an element that the developers knew must make a statement.

“Our valued partner, Clark Hall Doors and Windows, created a four-foot-wide, ten-foot-tall true arched door unit,” Anderson says. “Implementing both JELD-WEN and Clark Hall, we captured the simple yet striking architectural design on the front of the home. Jim also wanted to create a large living room that connected to the kitchen and also opens up to the outdoor pool and living area. We were able

to unite these spaces with a custom Euro-Wall Multi Slide door. This Multi Slide door stacks to one side when opened, allowing for an expansive eighteen-foot opening between the interior and exterior space. Even when the unit is closed, the narrow, one-inch interlocks give the owners an unobstructed view. To honor the architectural design and create a consistent theme throughout the home, we also used Euro-Wall swinging doors in other parts of the home, with the same daylight openings as the Multi Slide units.”

With this substantial project under their belt, the team at Frank’s is looking forward to another busy year ahead. Anderson says, “We plan to continue what we have been doing for fifty years: servicing our customers all the way through the process, from the original takeoffs to the final punch list, with the best staff and the best products the market has to offer.”

HELPING NEIGHBORS AT HOME AND AROUND THE WORLD

AS LISA BURWELL AND SUZY AND JIM ACCOLA DISCUSSED THE MEANING OF THE BEACH HOUSE, THE FOURTH VIE SHOW HOME, THE QUESTION “HOW CAN WE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?” WAS ALWAYS A PRIORITY.

H

eadquartered in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, The Sonder Project is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower impoverished communities through highimpact, sustainable development. Chad Zibelman, CEO of The Sonder Project, expresses his gratitude for the generous donation made on behalf of the VIE Beach House. “This donation will make it possible for the project to drill a well and install a manual hand pump to support at least five hundred people in one of The Sonder Project’s partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” says Zibelman. The Burwells and Accolas are thrilled to extend the show home’s proceeds beyond the local community and help those in economically developing countries through The Sonder Project.

In addition to its efforts overseas, The Sonder Project also played a massive role in raising funds and providing relief for families in the Florida Panhandle during Hurricane Michael’s aftermath in 2018 and 2019, raising over $600,000. Burwell adds, “When searching for charity beneficiaries, we knew we wanted to support our local community, and The Sonder Project and its heart for the mission field both locally and globally moved us to choose them alongside Food For Thought. Their passion for helping our community during the aftermath of Hurricane Michael was commendable and impressive, and that is only a fraction of what they continue to do in the spirit of the VIE Beach House ‘neighbors helping neighbors’ effort.”

The Sonder Project currently has programs in the sub-Saharan African countries of Burkina Faso and Malawi. The organization’s website describes high-impact, sustainable development as “community efforts that support basic needs and increase the opportunity to change the lives of a significant number of people for an extended period at an efficient cost-per-person impacted.” Due to the low cost and great need for help in economically developing countries, solving these problems can make a

tremendous difference for many people at a fraction of the cost. Zibelman adds, “Our well program increases access to clean water and improves the health of entire communities while saving families valuable time to focus on other tasks, such as caring for the household, studying for school, and increasing income. This gift from the show home’s sale could also get us to 42 percent of what we need to build a school block to increase access to education for thousands of students for generations.”

With the core values of helping as many people as possible, The Sonder Project is committed to lifting future generations from poverty and demanding equality. With over twenty-one water pumps installed, eleven schools built, and one solar-powered irrigation farm established, they already make a significant impact in partner communities.

The organization is also introducing a new initiative in 2021 to sponsor vulnerable students who attend Sonder Project schools.

FIGHTING HUNGER

Dedicated to fighting child hunger since 2010, Food For Thought Outreach (FFT) is a not-for-profit organization serving children in grades K–12 in Northwest Florida’s Walton and Okaloosa Counties.

F

ounded by Tiffanie Nelson in 2010, FFT supports children from over thirty-two schools by bridging the gap between school meals during weekends and breaks.

FFT also offers learning and life-skill resources through the Emeril Lagasse Full Circle Kitchen and their Full Circle Gardens. Many children in our community only have access to school meals during the week, so FFT plays a vital role in ensuring these children can eat when they go home for the weekend.

Hunger affects a child’s ability to concentrate and perform complex tasks in and out of the classroom.

Research also indicates that hunger can cause behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, anxiety, and aggression. These are all reasons that the VIE Beach House – A Show Home team is ecstatic to donate a portion of the profit from the home’s sale to this local organization.

Nelson’s desire to empower the underserved in our community drives her mission to take the stress of wondering where the next meal will come from off children, allowing them to focus on their education and become productive members of the community.

The organization has been providing meals to foodinsecure children through their in-school backpack program for years. The backpacks, containing healthy and easy-to-prepare meals, are the most effective way to fight child hunger in our community; children are provided with critical items in a discreet manner, so they don’t have to worry about feeling judged.

When asked about her connection to the organization, show home developer and owner of Q Tile + Design Studio Suzy Accola says, “We have worked with Food For Thought and watched them grow in this area over the ten years we have lived in Santa Rosa Beach. Between our three kids, they’ve attended Bay Elementary, Seaside Middle School, Emerald Coast Middle School, Seacoast Collegiate High School, South Walton High School, and Ohana Institute.

There is such a need in our area and beyond for kids to receive nutritious foods that feed their brains and bodies. Food For Thought provides kids the ability to receive these meals anonymously in backpacks from their schools.”

“We cannot think of a more worthy or deserving cause to support during these difficult times,” says VIE founder/CEO Lisa Burwell. “Children are the future of our community, and they deserve the very best chance for health, happiness, and success in their lives. Thank you, Food For Thought, for everything you do to help them and their families throughout the year!”

With the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, FFT changed operations to a modified plan that involves curbside pickups in five locations every week. The curbside program has served five hundred to six hundred families, each with a bag of over thirty food

items. Thanks to the organization’s dedication to creating a sustainable program, FFT has not missed a week of service since March 2020.

Since January 2021, FFT has been able to reincorporate the in-school backpack program into half of the Food For Thought schools they serve and are slowly provides kids the working toward reincorporating the ability to receive rest. Keeping safety in mind and depending on the protocols, FFT hopes these meals to return to normal processes by the anonymously end of the year. According to Feeding America, before the COVID-19 crisis, nearly 11 million children lived in food-insecure households. Despite this staggering number, prepandemic data reflected the lowest food-insecurity rates in more than twenty years. The devastating effects of COVID-19 have reversed all of the improvements made over the past decade, with millions more children now newly experiencing food insecurity. FFT has never lost sight of the goal to feed as many children in the community as possible.

Despite the challenges of the recent year, their steadfast determination remains more robust than ever.

The donation from the VIE Beach House’s sale, with a mission of “neighbors helping neighbors,” will support at least thirty thousand food items that will go directly to the food-insecure children enrolled in FFT services.

“I love all that Tiffanie stands for, as well as so many others at Food For Thought who give their time, energy, and creativity to make good things happen!” says Accola.

Food For Thought depends on the generosity and partnership of the community to provide their services.

t was a brisk day for Northwest Florida, but the sun was shining and smiles abounded as everyone gathered at the Beach House construction site for a very special blessing.

Pastor Gary offered words of wisdom and encouragement, stating how a solid foundation is the most important thing for building not only a strong home but also a firm faith, deep friendships, a happy family, and all other parts of life.

At the very beginning stages of the show home’s design, developers Suzy and Jim Accola of Q Tile + They make Design Studio and Coastal Elements Construction knew they wanted the home to be unlike any other seen on 30-A. Using their talents in design, construction, tile, and finishings, they, along with the many other show home partners, crafted a home like no other. From the moment you walk through the custom Clark Hall door from Frank’s Cash and Carry, you get a feeling of being home. The work of Jonah Allen instantly greets you in the front entryway, and your eyes are immediately led to the handcrafted staircase with iron handrails.

The open-concept kitchen, dining, and living room are what beach house dreams are made of ! Suzy Accola brought not only function but also high design to this spacious kitchen, which is perfect for entertaining large groups. Designer Cindy McCarley worked with Suzy to achieve the perfect cabinet layout and created an artistic rendering of the design team’s overall concept. “Cindy’s detailed, vibrant drawings brought the vision to life for me,” not the details.

Suzy says. “She is such a talented artist.” The contrast of the open reclaimed-wood shelving and the sleek the design. lacquer cabinets makes for a great blend of modern farmhouse and beach chic. The breakfast nook with its custom concrete table designed by Chris Bailey of Maison30a Home + Garden is the perfect spot for morning coffee and quiet time. As you look into the living room—designed in partnership with Melissa Skowlund of Summer House Lifestyle—you’ll see the massive white sectional, slipcovered in a performance fabric, facing the grand fireplace. It is funny to think that we use the term “beach” to describe our area, because it is so much more than that. In my opinion, “endlessly picturesque wonderland of nature and activities” is more like it. Scenic Highway 30-A always has something new to discover, from the copious natural parks to the luxury beachside shopping centers and restaurants.

The VIE Beach House, tucked back into the Seagrove Beach forest, is also within walking distance of restaurants and shops, making it the perfect home for the adventurous soul.

he breathtaking natural beauty of 30-A provides visitors and locals alike with a medicine no doctor can prescribe. There is something about those October sunsets followed by morning walks on the trails and late summer nights on the beach that help us all breathe a little deeper. Perhaps this is the magic that brings our community together in gratitude for the ability to call 30-A our home. As John Burroughs said, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” As selfproclaimed nature lovers, we can relate, but we also must admit to loving a good happy hour. Thankfully, 30-A has us covered in all departments: nature, white-sand beaches, world-class restaurants, fabulous shopping, and vibrant entertainment.

comforting reminder when we feel overwhelmed by our problems. No matter the season, our beaches offer a place of pure solitude and serenity to those who visit. There are endless memories to be made along our coastline—memories filled with lots of sunshine, laughter, and gratitude for life.

The area’s fifteen stunning coastal dune lakes are yet another natural source of bliss we get to experience.

These serene dune lakes are rare natural phenomena found only in Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, Oregon—and Walton County, Florida. Thankfully, the county has an aggressive program in place to protect them at all costs; they make the perfect setting for morning meditation or a sunset paddleboard session. One of the most picturesque sites in our area is Western Lake as you drive through WaterColor; the trees across the lake convey the image of standing tall with elegance.

As you spend more time here and experience the remarkable natural wonders of the area, your curiosity may spike, encouraging you to explore more. Thankfully, over two hundred miles of hiking and biking trails are open to the public, so nature lovers will never become bored. A Taste of the Beach BRING HOME

n the affluent communities along Scenic Highway 30-A in Northwest Florida, as in many places around the globe currently, the demand for highquality private chefs and catering services has skyrocketed as more people are not only moving to the area but also opting to dine at home.

Whether planning meals for the week or entertaining friends and family for an intimate special occasion, more people are turning to expert chefs to take care of their at-home dining needs. This is the specialty of Éclat 30a, a private chef and catering company based in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. It was founded by Chef Simon Sullivan, a native of England who grew up along the coast of Louisiana and developed a strong affinity for Cajun flavors and fresh Gulf seafood.

Inspired by his late father, who sparked Sullivan’s love for cooking at an early age, the chef later made the hobby his profession as he started working at V Seagrove along 30-A. His dream of becoming a chef was realized just down the road in the beautiful New Urbanism community of Rosemary Beach, where Sullivan served as sous chef at Restaurant Paradis for four years before beginning his solo journey. Now, as the executive chef of Éclat 30a, Sullivan expresses the passion instilled in him by his father by feeding others well. From full-service, multicourse private dinners to brunches, seafood boils, event catering, and meal prep, Éclat 30a helps hosts create unforgettable dining experiences that will foster great conversation and camaraderie while their world-renowned chefs take care of the cooking.

VIE was thrilled to catch up with Chef Sullivan and Éclat 30a’s go-to mixologist, Paul Henslin, to bring a taste of the Gulf of Mexico to this special VIE Beach House – A Show Home Issue. They graciously shared some of their favorite coastal-inspired recipes with us so our readers can whip up a taste of the beach at home!

Gulf Shrimp Ceviche Tacos FEEDS 6 | TOTAL TIME: 1 HOUR

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 1/4 pounds Gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined 3 lemons, juiced and seeds removed 3 limes, juiced 1 grapefruit, juiced and seeds removed 2 avocados, chopped 1/2 red onion, finely diced 2 jalapeños, seeded and finely diced 2 Roma (plum) tomatoes, seeded and diced 1/4 cup roughly chopped cilantro Salt Corn tortillas

DIRECTIONS Roughly chop the raw shrimp into bite-size pieces.

In a large bowl, combine chopped shrimp and juices from the lemons, limes, and grapefruit. Let mixture rest for 30–60 minutes. As it rests, the citrus juices will “cook” the shrimp.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the diced red onion, jalapeños, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Once the citrus has “cooked” the shrimp, drain excess liquid and fold in the vegetable mixture. Add salt to taste.

Serve on warm corn tortillas, and enjoy!

Pan-Seared Snapper with Root-Vegetable Hash and Tahini Sauce FEEDS 4 | TOTAL TIME: 1 HOUR

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup tahini 1/2 cup water 5 large garlic cloves 3 lemons, juiced and seeds removed 12-ounce bag of brussels sprouts 3 carrots, peeled 3 parsnips, peeled 1 stick unsalted butter 1 teaspoon coriander 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon yellow curry 1 bunch flat-leaf Italian parsley 5 mint leaves, torn 1 pomegranate 4 3-ounce fillets of red snapper (approximately 2 pounds total) • 4–6 tablespoons olive oil, enough to cover bottom of pan • Salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS

Make the tahini sauce: Peel the garlic cloves, finely mince, and place in a medium bowl, reserving a small amount for another use. Add the tahini and lemon juice to the garlic and gradually incorporate the water into the tahini mixture, stirring constantly.

Add salt to taste and set aside.

Pour butter and aromatics mixture over the brussels sprouts, carrots, and parsnips, and gently mix by hand until fully coated, adding salt to taste. Roast at 400 degrees until root vegetables are tender, approximately 30 minutes.

After roasting, leave the oven at 400 degrees and set vegetables aside.

Pare stem ends from brussels sprouts, cut each in half, and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Slice peeled carrots and parsnips lengthwise into quarters and add to the baking sheet with brussels sprouts; set aside.

While the root vegetables roast, chiffonade parsley and tear mint (mint will bruise if chopped with a knife). Put herbs in a small bowl and set aside. Break open pomegranate, remove seeds to a small bowl, and set aside.

In a small sauté pan, melt the stick of butter over medium heat until it begins to turn golden brown.

Stir in coriander, cumin, and curry, along with the

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Heat a large sauté pan over high heat. Add oil to the hot pan and wait until it starts to smoke ever so slightly, then add the fish fillets skin-side down. Cook until skin is crispy and golden brown, approximately 3–5 minutes, reducing heat if skin begins to get too brown. Flip each fillet with a thin metal spatula and put the skillet in the hot oven to finish cooking, approximately 5 minutes. Carefully remove skillet from oven with hot pads and set aside on a heat-proof surface.

Place the root vegetables in a single layer on a serving platter (I like serving this dish family-style). Top the vegetables with the fish fillets and drizzle the tahini sauce over the fish, allowing some to drizzle onto the vegetables below. Sprinkle the dish with the parsley, mint, and pomegranate seeds for a touch of acid, and serve immediately. Bon appétit!

Daiquiri No. 3

BY PAUL HENSLIN When VIE magazine asked me to feature a summer cocktail, I couldn’t wait to share the Daiquiri No. 3 with you. It’s been a recent favorite of mine because of its history and my recaptured love of rum.

Rumor has it, a bartender named Constantino Ribalaigua Vert created the Daiquiri No.3. at El Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba, in the 1930s. Its nickname is none other than the Hemingway daiquiri, as it was a favorite of the famous author who liked it “without sugar and double the rum.” The drink is also sometimes known as the Papa Doble daiquiri.

This version accentuates the best qualities in each ingredient and pairs perfectly with maraschino liqueur.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

2 ounces Campesino Silver X Rum 1/2 ounce simple syrup 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice 1/4 ounce grapefruit juice 1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur, preferably Luxardo Ice cubes for shaking Crushed ice for serving 1 lime wedge for garnish Old-fashioned glass

DIRECTIONS Combine the rum, simple syrup, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and maraschino liqueur in a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Shake with ice cubes and strain over the oldfashioned glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with the lime wedge. ¡Salud!

Lifestyle With a sharp knife, cut the acorn squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard. Continue to halve acorn squash pieces until they resemble crescent moons, about 1/2-inch thick. Transfer squash to a rimmed baking sheet.

Slice the fingerling potatoes crosswise, so they resemble coins, about 1/8-inch thick. Transfer to the baking sheet with the squash. Drizzle potato coins and squash crescents with olive oil and season with salt. Roast at 400 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until tender, remove from oven, and set aside.

Let’s build the salad! While the squash and potatoes cook, spoon the herbed yogurt onto a large serving platter. Spread the yogurt across the bottom of the serving platter so that it covers the platter to about 1 inch away from the rim.

Israeli Kale Niçoise FEEDS 4 | TOTAL TIME: 1 HOUR

INGREDIENTS FOR THE TAHINI DRESSING: • 5 large garlic cloves • 1/2 cup tahini • 3 lemons, juiced and seeds removed • 1/2 cup water • Salt FOR THE PISTACHIO ZA’ATAR DUKKAH: • 1/2 cup chopped pistachios • Za’atar spice blend (found locally at Whole Foods, World Market, or Fresh Market) FOR THE HERBED GREEK YOGURT: • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon of each: fresh parsley, mint, and thyme, finely chopped, to taste • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced • Salt to taste FOR THE SALAD: • 1 acorn squash • 4 fingerling potatoes 120 | A P R IL 2 021

• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 bunch of kale, rinsed and picked over, cut into bite-size pieces • 1/4 cup halved cherry tomatoes • 1/8 cup split kalamata olives • 1 egg, hard boiled and finely chopped or roughly grated into crumbles • Salt

DIRECTIONS

Combine the chopped kale with enough tahini dressing to lightly coat each piece, massaging the dressing into the kale by hand. (Massaging in the dressing breaks down the coarser fibers of the kale and tenderizes it.) Scatter the kale on top of the Greek yogurt. Sprinkle the salad with the kalamata olives and cherry tomatoes. Arrange the roasted squash and potatoes across the kale (I like to use 3 squash segments). Place about a quarter of the grated egg in the center of the salad and finish with a generous sprinkle of the pistachio dukkah. Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

FOR THE HERBED GREEK YOGURT: In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt with the herbs, to taste. Add the reserved minced garlic from the tahini dressing and mix to thoroughly combine. Add salt to taste and set aside.

once lived in a beach cabana on the ocean in Accra, Ghana, and from the terrace we watched nightly dinner coming ashore as fishermen pulled their nets from the sea onto the beach every afternoon. Decades later, living on the Intracoastal Waterway, I saw an astonishing sight out the window: not the usual afternoon fleet of birds, but instead an eighteenth-century columned mansion floating on a barge. Yet of all the seaside houses I’ve lived in—on both coasts of Africa, in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, and in the American South—none of the views rivaled a flock of pink flamingos on Ambergris Cay in the Turks and Caicos. Their midmorning ritual was hanging out at the water’s edge within striking distance of the beach cottage. Nothing is more tranquil than sipping coffee while watching others gather. The elegant, spindly, pink-and-coral birds arrayed themselves like party guests, snacking on tidbits swimming at their feet while checking out each other and their surroundings too, just as we humans do at our social events.

The living is easy, but it’s not all fun and games. Challenges still arise. Try getting house guests to leave or keeping the sand outside. Try readjusting when the halcyon days of beachy rhythms, sights, sounds, and even rare glimpses of the green flash (the very moment the sun leaves the horizon) are replaced with city noise and traffic jams. Visitors think life at the beach is a permanent vacation. No, it is not! Residents have places to go, appointments to keep. Try crossing the road when a convention of Cyclura carinata, or rock iguanas, spread out to rest in the sun, making your journey from one point to another impossible or, at the very least, time-consuming. It was a daily occurrence on Ambergris Cay. A beach house used to mean escape for a week, a month, a season. Not now. People remain plugged into their devices and work no matter where they live. However, there is an ease to daily life rarely found in other places. Life at the beach is the opposite of a big international city’s operatic drama.

There is a similarity to how houses on the water, or near the water, are designed. The lack of separation between the outdoors and indoors is a primary characteristic. Porches are extensions of the house. And windows let more than light in; they allow us to experience the view outside. The round window on the VIE Beach House – A Show Home is a perfect example of a frame for nature. Coverings on windows are either nonexistent or very light. Living by the water makes one healthier and calmer, with the sound of waves, an expanse of sky, oxygen that seems fresher, indoors blurring with the outside.

Not only do heart rates slow (unless one is on a honeymoon), but daily rhythms do too. Instead of speeding in a car, people walk, ride golf carts, or bike. It is not unusual to go barefoot, wear a sarong to the grocery store, leave hair salty and wet—ways of presenting oneself that would be inappropriate in urban settings.

Life is more spur of the moment, last-minute plans punctuating days with sparks of joy and delight.

Lifestyle lined—have no place near the beach. City dwellers need protection from outside weather, light, and people. Coastal home windows let the outdoors in and are, in fact, a version of art. The window art collection can be expressed as glass walls, windowed doors, or windows lined up like a series of paintings. A coastal house is like a fun teenager compared with a dowager grandmother mansion in a big city. Casual life on the beach allows us to indulge in our younger, playful side.

No wonder coastal cities are becoming inundated!

Notwithstanding the common coastal architectural characteristic of merging outside and in, there is a rich variety of coastal styles worldwide—from New England to Lake Michigan, Baja to the Bahamas. The VIE show home in Seagrove Beach, Florida, combines select bits from all over Southern California, the Mediterranean, and the Gulf Coast, with details like exposed wooden beams, cathedral ceilings, round windows, bare wooden floorboards, and furniture covered in tactile linen or cotton slipcovers that can stand up to salt and sun. The common theme

is practicality. Colors of sea glass, indigo, and ocean mist infuse the home, bringing nature indoors. But there are also whimsical touches, such as handcrafted tiles with bees painted on them.

Collaborating on the show home was a team of architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and editors. Each company and person showed what they do best, working for an end product that is harmonious and designed for the public to see and a person to buy. Then comes the question of how the owners make the house their own. Once a home is lived in, partied in, and relaxed in, the dwellers’ spirits infuse the space. They move stuff around, take away, and add more so that the house expresses them more than those before. When owners have a confident sense of their unique style, they can adapt to the new place and build upon what the expert team created, transforming it into their own.
