A MILESTONE Along an EPIC Journey 16 | F EBRUA R Y 2 02 2

T

he proverb “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” is a fitting analogy of our walk these past fourteen years of publishing VIE. I vividly recall the moment the idea to publish a magazine flashed into my mind. It was late in 2007 when our niche branding company, The Idea Boutique (publisher of VIE), was experiencing a downturn—the prelude to what we all now refer to as the Great Recession. Being an entrepreneur with a passionate desire to stave off layoffs was the catalyst behind this brainchild of mine. My husband and business partner, Gerald, asked, “What do you know about creating a magazine?” and I said, “How hard can it be?” This was the genesis of our journey. We had not even named the magazine yet. After several months of concentrated brainstorming and intense design charettes with the team to bring our vision to life, we published the first issue of VIE in May 2008. Blind faith, confidence, and an ardent tenacity that I had never experienced before were my constant companions during that time. Oh, and yes, making a magazine is much harder than I could have ever imagined then, but to reach an end goal, you need the nerve to start. Ideas only work when put into motion. Sometimes they thrive, sometimes they don’t; you’ll never know unless you take that first step. Courage and faith in this vision, which I believe was God-given, are how I knew I must stay the course. But the talent, commitment, passion, belief, and determination of my team are how VIE has thrived. My respect and love for them run deep, as this magazine would not have been realized without them.

To properly set the stage of the business climate in those early days, there seemed to be a common sentiment that our sales team faced on an almost daily basis: “Print is dead.” There were moments when I asked myself, “What am I doing?” I will never forget the day in 2009 that the beautiful and well-established magazine Gourmet, published by Condé Nast, shut its doors after sixty-eight years of publishing. How could we possibly keep going with the passion and determination needed to create a new lifestyle magazine when some of the best I had ever seen were closing? Sadly, there were at least two hundred others that followed suit. It is with such gratitude and humility that we have reached the milestone of publishing VIE’s hundredth issue. Over the years, we have been blessed to have many great covers featuring extraordinary people, including Robert Redford, Tina Brown, ZZ Top, Kristin Chenoweth, Carrie Underwood, Livia Firth, Florida Georgia Line, Christian Siriano, Luke Bryan, Ashley Campbell, Emeril Lagasse, Ashley Longshore, and many more. For almost six months, our team has been dedicated to creating something unique and worthy of our readers, advertisers, and the noteworthy achievement we are now celebrating. The result is a highly curated gallery of the best in photography, art, fashion, and more, along with a stellar lineup of people making positive changes worldwide. So, who would be the cover ambassador for such a momentous issue? The answer seemed elusive until a few months ago when we serendipitously met Julian Lennon, who was a featured guest on the nineteenth episode of our podcast, VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart and Soul. (Listen now at VIEmagazine.com/

vie-speaks-conversations-with-heart-soul-podcast.) When we extended the invitation to grace the cover of our hundredth issue, he graciously accepted. In her article “Portrait of a Change Maker: A Modern Renaissance Man,” VIE’s managing editor Jordan Staggs delves deeper into the makeup of Julian. Being a musician, philanthropist, photographer, documentarian, and humanitarian are just some of the outstanding accomplishments of this humble and good person that we could all strive to emulate. VIE’s brand ethos has become that of “Stories with Heart and Soul.” While the celebrity-centric culture grew stronger within mainstream media, we had a vision to purposefully feature “the everyman” alongside the famous ones. So many people in our world do amazing things that are often overlooked and ignored in favor of sensational headlines and gossip. VIE is determined to showcase how very good and beautiful our world is. We desire to be a voice to motivate, educate, celebrate, and inspire people to reach their highest potential so that they can move mountains, making the world a better place. A heartfelt thank you goes to all of our supporters and fans of VIE. We could not have done this without you. Here’s to a beautiful new year filled with a renewed love of humanity and the world we live in. To Life!

JULIAN LENNON “Portrait of a Change Maker” @julespicturepalace

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: HOW DO YOU STRIVE TO MAKE THE WORLD MORE BEAUTIFUL?

The world is already such an incredibly beautiful place. I just try to remind people of that fact in whatever way, shape, or form that carries that message (music, books, documentaries, charity, etc.). And I try to remember we are the ones who are to blame for destroying that beauty and life, in all of its forms, and again that we are a part of nature, not apart from it.

AS HIS CHILDREN, WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE WORLD. TO ME, MAKING THE WORLD A MORE BEAUTIFUL PLACE IS SIMPLY SEEING AND CARING FOR ALL THE BEAUTY GOD HAS ALREADY SOWN.

A POSITIVE ATTITUDE CAN’T CHANGE THE WHOLE WORLD, BUT IT CAN MAKE YOUR WORLD MORE BEAUTIFUL. ROBERT ASCROFT Photographer, “Portrait of a Change Maker” @robertascroft

HANNAH VERMILLION Graphic Designer @hannahcvermillion

I believe that God created beauty all around! From the mountains and oceans to all the plants and animals, everything was made perfectly for a purpose. As His children, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the world. To me, making the world a more beautiful place is simply seeing and caring for all the beauty God has already sown. We can do that by loving and helping others, caring for our community, being conscious of our environment, and serving as good role models for our children. If we all collectively try to do these things, the world will continue to be a beautiful place!

ADDIE STRICKLAND Marketing Coordinator @adelle.strickland

I believe that the world around us is a reflection of each of our personal worlds. So, to make the world a more beautiful place, our personal lives should also be beautiful. A personal goal I have is to have a positive outlook wherever I am and create beneficial environments for me and everyone I’m around. A positive attitude can’t change the whole world, but it can make your world more beautiful. The world is a beautiful place when my world is positive.

The world in its natural state is a beautiful place. All you need to do is open your eyes and mind to all its glory. As a photographer, I strive to create beauty through light and composition, but it is the idea of approaching my work with a child’s mind that I find most intriguing. Often, I see what is happening around me, and then I react accordingly, adjusting expectations to these unexpected situations and allowing for beautiful things to occur. My pursuit of unique and original perspectives has kept me growing for the past twenty-five years as an artist. One of my favorite statements is ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ because it shows that personal taste is also part of the equation. I have been working on photography, directing, and music for some time now. All of these pursuits are for the world to interact with—I hope in a positive way that allows the viewer or listener to experience humanity in their own way. V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 19

A Modern Renaissance Man Po r t r a i t o f a C h a n g e M a ke r

By Jordan Staggs Portrait photography by Robert Ascroft

As a man with an innate desire to forge his own path in the world, Julian Lennon boasts a trailblazing career map that looks a lot like the Los Angeles freeway—branching, looping, and twisting in many directions but continually on the move. Lennon has always been an artist by nature, making his mark on the music scene early on and releasing his first solo album, Valotte, in 1984 at age twenty-one. The album produced two Billboard Top 10 hits in the US, and he has since created five other studio albums, the most recent being Everything Changes, released in 2011. With a brand-new album in the works and hope for a world tour within the next couple of years, Lennon is back to share his musical soul with listeners old and new—but in the meantime, he’s had another instrument of art in his hands. 26 | F E BRUA R Y 2 02 2

using that he likes to take most creative projects at his own pace, Lennon says that getting into photography was sort of an accident. “I was working with a dear friend, Timothy White, and he was shooting a charity campaign, and I actually edited some of his photos without his knowledge,” he laughs. “He said, ‘How do you know how to do that?’ I said, ‘I don’t really, I’m just playing around,’ and he said, ‘Well, what other pictures or work do you have?’” The pair began reviewing Lennon’s candid shots taken over the years during his life, travels, and music career. White encouraged him to do an exhibition, and with White’s guidance and support, Lennon embarked on his journey as a fine art photographer. “There are similarities in photography and music, but they’re very different mediums,” he says, and those who view and listen to his work can see that Lennon embraces both with an honest and open-minded point of view. His first-ever photography show, produced in 2010, featured thirty-five of Lennon’s pictures shown for a month at the renowned Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City. “About three days before that event, there was a lot of anxiety,” he admits. “There’s that buildup where you just don’t know how things are going to go.” He jokes about something every artist can appreciate—critical reviews. “I thought, ‘If they have a go at me on the music front, they’re probably wondering what this guy thinks he’s doing showing photos now.’ And to my absolute wonder and surprise, the response was magnificent. It was very overwhelming.”

Lines wrapped the block for that first show, further shocking the humble artist. Among his photography subjects were his brother Sean Lennon, Bono, and various scenes from his travels. Anything might inspire a Julian Lennon original photograph—from layers of cloud cover to locals fishing off an overpass or members of his travel parties as he visits cities and nations worldwide for his nonprofit, The White Feather Foundation. “I realized that photography really was a great way—as music is, but this is even more direct—of showing people who didn’t have a chance to travel, people on the other side of the globe, what others’ lives are like,” he says. “It’s a bit like going through the looking glass to provide a very empathetic view of the state of the world, good and bad. I’d been involved in the medium of documentaries and been an avid fan of them for years, but the idea of being a storyteller, a messenger of sorts, made me feel very important in sharing the lives of those I’ve come across with those who don’t have the chance to travel.” He continues, “It’s a very personal journey and a joy to share those experiences. I think it allows people to understand why we need to support others and do better in this world.”

ennon’s latest collection of fine art photography includes eighteen images now available for public enjoyment as an exclusive collaboration with General Public, the innovative art house founded and curated by former actress Portia de Rossi. General Public’s mission is to make fine art more accessible to all through its Synograph printing technology. “A Synograph, like a photograph, allows the artist to create multiple works from the original, thereby taking great paintings out of galleries and making them available to the general public,” the company’s website states.

previously be reproduced with the same quality as the original. The Synograph changes all that.

Lennon’s collection for General Public is now available exclusively through world-renowned home decor and lifestyle retailer RH.

De Rossi continues, “It took us a few years of perfecting the scanning and printing processes to create a product that was a faithful representation of the piece it was depicting. We worked hard to create an exceptional product that the artist can stand behind—more than simply a print of a work of art; it’s an artwork in itself.”

“It’s a pleasure to partner and collaborate with Portia and her team at General Public and RH,” says Lennon. “I consider it a privilege for my photography to occupy space in people’s homes—and hearts—especially at this time. I sincerely hope that the images we present in this series resonate in a meaningful way. “It can be exciting when you hear, ‘Well, you’ve sold this many or that many photos,’ but that’s not really the interest behind what I do on any front, whether that’s music or photography or film production, et cetera,” Lennon continues. “It’s about trying to be a better person and trying to make a difference.” As a fellow artist, de Rossi says she has always felt a need to create and that the process of doing so was how she expressed her deeply empathetic need to connect with others. “I needed to explore, whether it was just me or if others shared my viewpoint,” she says. “So, I like to think that all art, whether it is acting, filmmaking, or painting, it’s an expression of a person’s emotional experience of life. To connect with others on that emotional level is the goal of all artists.” Creating General Public was a way for de Rossi to connect artists with even more people around the globe by removing the limits posed by paintings that couldn’t 30 | F E BRUA R Y 2 02 2

“I saw that advancements in 3D scanning and printing had helped nearly every other field, but not art,” she explains. “So the idea was to take a high-resolution scan of a painting and then use that scan to create an accurate reproduction of the piece, down to every little bump of texture. The artist makes a royalty for each piece sold, and they can still sell their original piece just as they normally would. By printing multiples, we are able to offer the customer a piece of art that supports the artist who created it at a price point that is not based on the scarcity of the original.”

Not surprisingly, RH saw the benefits of the Synograph’s quality and potential as a new way for consumers to collect works by their favorite fine artists at a fraction of the cost. General Public’s partnership with the brand ensures that the artists are still being fairly represented and compensated, and collectors know they are supporting the creators they love. “When we decided to add photography into our repertoire, we knew that we wanted to do so with artists who have a unique perspective on the medium,” de Rossi says, explaining how General Public connected with Lennon in the first place through his photography agent, Wendy Posner of Posner Fine Art. “Julian is a great example of this because you really can’t fit his work into one subject matter. He is just as comfortable shooting a portrait as he is a landscape or an abstract. His work inspired me with its wide scope; you can tell that he is drawn to take photographs at all moments, to capture the world around him and re-present it to his viewer. The images in the collection present Julian’s range, and each piece is a powerful representation of its genre.”

I consider it a privilege for my photography to occupy space in people’s homes—and hearts—especially at this time. I sincerely hope that the images we present in this series resonate in a meaningful way.

ennon’s General Public collection at RH currently includes a mix of portraits, abstract shots, cityscapes, travel and nature photos, and candids of people and places from his Cuba series.

One such memorable shot is the piece titled Rico Suave, showing the Cuban local who acted as chauffeur for Lennon and his friend during their visit. “He was a character,” Lennon laughs. “We were at one of the places he wanted to show us, outside of Havana, that was a little out of the way from the normal tourist traps because that’s what I was far more interested in. There was a beach in front of us covered in glass—which was very sad, as people were partying and then leaving stuff—and then I looked back, and he was lounging on the front of his car. I made a quick turnaround and snapped it, and believe it or not, that’s one of my favorite pictures. I said to Portia that I wanted that one to be sent to me straight from the printers for my wall. It was completely candid.”

De Rossi says, “I love each piece in the collection, of course, but a piece that keeps me coming back is Smoking in Amsterdam. The work is a great example of how a photograph can capture the mood of a place while remaining a unique abstract image. It exemplifies Julian’s approach to photography to me; he is always observing the world around him and noticing moments that most of us would pass right by.” Lennon’s existing photography collection is extensive, so fans can expect to see more from him in the near future. “I’m about fifty thousand pictures in right now, reviewing them, and have about fifty thousand to go,” he laughs. General Public recently launched more collections at RH featuring new works by artists Alison Van Pelt, Kristin Brin, Marcia Priestley, and more. “In addition to our open submission platform, our creative director, Slater Herman, and our art advisor, Hayley Miner, work with galleries and artist representatives around the world to facilitate meaningful collaborations with artists,” says de Rossi of the General Public selection process. “We choose work on a project-by-project basis; for example, we work closely with RH to curate collections that would be exciting and interesting for their customers. Our goal is to highlight artists in a new light and provide their work ample opportunity to succeed.” For the chance to join General Public’s roster of featured collections, artists are encouraged to submit their portfolios through the open submission platform at GeneralPublicArt.com. De Rossi jokes, “We are not scary and we don’t bite!” The team looks for artists of varying styles and genres, putting passion above all. “We look for artists who put themselves into their work, who create out of the need to make art,” she says. The art house is just getting started, with more great things sure to come in the next couple of years as it grows and evolves. “We are experimenting with how far we can push the 3D printing capabilities with an eye toward new mediums,” de Rossi shares. “We are always exploring new ways of utilizing technology to create art, especially if it means that we can offer artists the ability to expand their practices in an exciting way.

Inspired by Lennon’s first trip to Adelaide, Australia, when the Mirning People visited him, the foundation “embraces environmental and humanitarian issues, and in conjunction with partners from around the world, raises funds for the betterment of all life, and to honor those who have made a difference,” according to the organization’s mission statement.

“To be honest, I had been thinking about writing my memoirs at that point, and I have a dear friend who’s a writer, Bart, who inspired this whole thing,” Lennon recalls. “We were talking about how to approach writing about my life up until this point. And he looked at me and said, ‘Jules, what are you doing with the White Feather for kids?’ I had always wanted to find an avenue to make that work. Bart said, ‘Why don’t we take the ideas and the concepts, everything that White Feather does, and put that in simple stories that kids will understand and ask questions about?’ I agreed, knowing it would initiate conversations among themselves and the parents, too, about why things are the way they are, and hopefully promote some change in some interested young minds and hearts who are looking for a better future.”

“From everything I do, whether it’s music or photography, there’s certainly a portion of those profits that goes back to The White Feather Foundation, which is mostly funded by people who donate from the bottom of their hearts,” Lennon shares. “I think the work that I do and getting myself out there gives more people the chance to see what we’re doing with the foundation and to support it, which allows us to do better things—keep cultures alive, provide health, education, and clean water—all those essential things in life that a lot of people still do not have, which is insane.”

A renaissance man with many talents and interests, but always in the spirit of helping others and the planet, Lennon has also produced and worked on various film projects. The most recent is Kiss the Ground, a Netflix documentary narrated by Woody Harrelson that promotes the Los Angeles–based nonprofit organization of the same name. The film, released in 2020, was

In addition to supporting artists, these exclusive collections may also help their philanthropic endeavors. Lennon’s work with the Mirning People in Australia and the Kogi people in Colombia aims to share these rich, unique cultures with the world and to preserve them for generations to come. This mission is also behind his new graphic novel, The Morning Tribe, created with Bart Davis and released in November 2021. The book, written for kids and teens, is described as “a middle grade action-adventure graphic novel that showcases young people protecting our critical environment and teaches that we are all part of the struggle to save the Earth’s future and sustain the human race.” The book received the World Literacy Award for 2021 for outstanding contributions to literacy and humanitarian projects.

featured at the Tribeca Film Festival and praised for its inside look at regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and education for the public, media, and political organizations worldwide to reverse climate change. “It’s a fantastic film. A friend of mine who is a producer and an incredible editor, Darius Fisher, told me he was working on it,” Lennon says. “I went to meet everybody, and I was intrigued. I actually had no idea what they were talking about, with the dust bowl and everything. The production went through some struggles for a couple of years—we wondered if it would get out the door—but it turned such a corner, and the final edit blew me away. What I like about executive producing or being part of documentaries is that there are actionable items; there are things in there that aren’t shoved down your throat, but they’re saying, ‘If we don’t do this, this is going to happen. This is your decision too.’” Visit KisstheGround.com to learn more about this global platform for environmental conservation and change, and keep an eye out on White Feather Films, Lennon’s new production company aimed at making documentaries with a mission. It’s clear that, at fifty-eight, Lennon has established himself as a global force for good as well as an inspiring artist, but he’s nowhere near finished. Hey Jules, we can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

When the long-time researcher and academic gave her TEDx talk “The Power of Vulnerability” in 2010, she had no idea it would garner more than sixty million views. Twelve years and six #1 New York Times bestsellers later, Brené Brown has inspired thousands through her candid discussions about vulnerability, shame, courage, and empathy. A masterful storyteller, Brown translates her extensive research on human emotions in a digestible way for anyone to comprehend. Brown explains that vulnerability is at the core of meaningful human experiences, and while it may feel scary and uncertain, it’s also the birthplace of love and belonging. Often demonstrating her own advice by sharing relatable struggles as a human, wife, mother, teacher, and more, Brown’s message resonates through her authenticity. Her words come at an especially sensitive time when understanding and empathy are needed more than ever. She highlights that while it may be easier to numb negative emotions, we cannot do so without numbing the positive ones too.

Lettye Burgtorf Lettye Burgtorf ’s cultured background growing up in Spain gave her the insight to understand that the American model of education wasn’t designed with every child in mind. Her desire to provide her daughters with a more personalized educational journey led her to determine homeschooling was the best option at the time. It was not long until members of her community caught on to Lettye’s savvy approach and wanted to offer the same educational experience for their children. Consequently, Ohana Institute was born and became a fully accredited independent, private school in 2011 located in Rosemary Beach, Florida, with the vision of offering children an environment that nurtured their individuality and carved a path of selfexploration. The nuanced approach provides a creative, comfortable, and loving environment where students participate in unique project-based learning and realworld experiences in many subjects. More than ten years later, Ohana has grown to over two hundred students in grades K-12, and Lettye’s vision remains more transparent than ever. The Ohana model of education has now extended into plans for day schools all over the country so children can begin their journey of individualized learning in preschool. Lettye and her husband, Allen, have made it their mission to be the foundation for change in the existing educational model. With Lettye’s passion, children in the community and beyond have an opportunity to discover themselves in the classroom like never before.

Davis’s ability to execute his vision for a better way of life is admirable for anyone who enjoys pondering the unexplored.

The Davis Family A list of change makers is not complete without the inclusion of the Davis family. The family patriarch, Robert Davis, founded the acclaimed community of Seaside, Florida, over forty years ago, thus beginning a movement in land planning known as New Urbanism. What started as a series of small cultural events ultimately grew into the charming architectural sensation many know today. Davis and his wife, Daryl, revolutionized urban town planning by emphasizing walkability, connectivity, diversity,

quality architecture, and sustainability. The model has since been replicated by many other communities and continues to be an inspiration for innovation for young architects worldwide. Davis’s ability to execute his vision for a better way of life is admirable for anyone who enjoys pondering the unexplored. Seaside continues to evolve through the generations as Micah Davis continues his father’s legacy through his mission to educate visitors about the principles of New Urbanism. The New Urbanism town model represents far more than convenience and attractive architecture; it offers the prospect of a sustainable planet with fewer greenhouse gases and a more connected, integrated society. Ashley Graham Supermodel Ashley Graham has proved a lot of people wrong over the years—and someone had to do it. Graham refuses to conform in an industry that idolizes unnatural bodies and thrives on superficiality. Appearing as the first plus-size model on the cover of Vogue in 2017, Graham didn’t succeed by playing by the rules. Despite being told to lose weight numerous times by agents, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model saw an opportunity to create change in an industry that desperately needed it. Now a household name, Graham’s impact on the modeling industry is undeniable. Bodies of all shapes and sizes grace the runways of New York Fashion Week, and conversations about what is attractive are less distinctive now. While there is still a long way to go in terms of inclusivity in the modeling industry, Graham helped rewrite the twenty-first-century script that told women there was only one type of beauty. But don’t get it twisted—the new mother of twin boys does not define herself as a “plus-size” model. She’s a woman.

As the current record holder for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, with a total of 328 days in space, Christina Koch shattered the glass ceiling with a rocket ship. Her journey began when she joined her middle school’s “Rocket Club,” which consisted of trips to the Kennedy Space Center. These unique experiences ignited her dream of becoming an astronaut, an aspiration many young people have before reality hits. However, Koch actually achieved it after completing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, a bachelor’s in physics, and a master’s in electrical engineering. In 2013 she was selected as a member of NASA’s twentyfirst astronaut class. After six years of intense training,

Koch launched on her first mission to the International Space Station on March 14, 2019, serving as a flight engineer. While in space, Koch worked on scientific studies covering human biology, earth science, technology development, and more. Koch participated in the first all-woman space walk alongside fellow astronaut Jessica Meir, who also happens to be her best friend, on October 18, 2019. Then, on February 6, 2020, Koch returned to earth as an inspiration and change maker. By championing an industry traditionally designed for men, Koch helped to shift the narrative to one that values intelligence, capability, and courage rather than gender stereotypes. Koch received an honorary PhD from North Carolina State University in 2020 and is currently preparing to journey to the moon as a part of NASA’s Artemis missions, where she could be the first woman to step foot on the moon.

In 2008, the Taliban took control of her town in Swat Valley, enforcing strict rules that prohibited girls from attending school. As a lover of education and fierce activist, Malala spoke publicly about girls’ right to learn in 2012. Unfortunately, her bravery ultimately led to her being shot in the head by a masked gunman on the way to school. After months of surgeries and rehabilitation, she miraculously recovered and gained a new ambition. In 2014, she joined her family in the UK and established the Malala Fund with her father. Malala describes the Malala Fund as a charity dedicated to giving every girl an opportunity to achieve her chosen future. In recognition of her work, Malala became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate. A recent graduate of the University of Oxford, Malala has traveled to many countries fighting against poverty, wars, child marriage, and gender discrimination in attending school. The Malala Fund is dedicated to telling the stories of those who do not have a voice, and through these stories, the possibility of change is stronger than ever. Malala is a change maker in every sense of the word.

Keanu Reeves Many know him to be a ruthless ex-assassin in John Wick or the protagonist in The Matrix, but Keanu Reeves’s desire to give back is by far his most impressive work. As one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, Reeves’s actions show that money is not his motivation. Instead, he has made a name for himself as one of the good ones through his unpretentious reputation among set workers. Grounding himself in reality, he is known to connect with those working alongside him, who often play as much of a role in creating the film as the actor. Once, he gifted $20,000 to a set builder on The Matrix after learning he was struggling financially. Reeves’s monetary gifts extend to charities, including his own, which helps people suffering from various forms of cancer. He has donated millions to those in need, despite often receiving no recognition for it. Reeves’s acts of service are a refreshing departure from the typical elite who frequently pad their astronomical bank accounts without a second thought. Instead, as someone who recognizes the hard work of those around him, Reeves does what most would hope someone would do in his situation. His selfless approach to wealth offers hope that there are good people in the world, even in Hollywood.

Visual Perspectives EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Still Life with Flowers in an Olive Jar was painted by French artist Paul Cézanne in 1880. The still-life art form emerged in the late sixteenth century. It remains a favorite among artists because it gives them the liberty to experiment with different arrangements of elements within the work of art. Cézanne’s work is unique because he used smaller brushstrokes to build an alluring complexion of color and life. Through his careful attention to detail and airy painting style, Still Life with Flowers in an Olive Jar symbolizes the bridge from nineteenth-century Impressionism to early twentieth-century Cubism.

Billionaire Elon Musk is a South African–born entrepreneur who came to the US at age twenty-one and attended the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, he has founded multiple companies with a unanimous vision to land people on Mars by 2025. Fueled (metaphorically) by his concern regarding climate change, Musk’s Tesla corporation has developed electric cars to reduce carbon emissions worldwide. He also founded the Boring Company, which focuses on solving traffic issues and producing low-cost transportation. In addition to his contributions to the environment, Musk has shown dedication to humanity through his generous donations.

Choosing the “best of the best” in music, entertainment, podcasts, books, movies, and television is, naturally, a subjective task and one that our staff was excited to take on for this special edition hundredth issue of VIE. Although our favorites can often change as we devour new content and revisit the classics, we love sharing them with readers so you can do the same with friends and family. Let us know what’s currently in your queue or on your nightstand—or the all-time faves you keep going back to—when you follow us on social media @viemagazine. We’d love to hear from you!

Watch Me DUNE

The big-screen adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s revered sci-fi classic was released in 2021 to mixed reviews, but its impressive scale and beautiful cinematography can’t be denied. Its all-star cast and pop culture significance make it worth a watch, especially as the second installment is expected to drop in 2023.

Little Women ©Columbia Pictures, 2019

LITTLE WOMEN Another classic came to life again in 2019 in this emotional family drama about the storied March sisters. With standout performances by Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Florence Pugh as Amy, and Emma Watson as Meg, literary fans of all ages should certainly cozy up with a cup of tea for this one.

The Beatles: Get Back © Disney+, 2021

NO TIME TO DIE Daniel Craig reprised his role as James Bond last year in the latest installment of the eponymous franchise based on Ian Fleming’s hit spy thrillers. The film leaves the world of 007 shaken (not stirred) and audiences worldwide speculating on where it could go next.

T H E B E AT L E S: G E T B AC K Get an inside look at making one of the most iconic albums of all time with renowned director and producer Peter Jackson. The Beatles: Get Back explores the story behind the band’s last studio album, Let It Be. From recording at Apple and EMI studios in London to the famed rooftop concert, the three-part docuseries released on Disney+ in November 2021 comprises almost exclusively never-before-seen footage.

DOPESICK “Inspired by the true story of how America got hooked on a lie,” Dopesick is one of the top dramas on Hulu and explores the sordid affairs of the US opioid crisis, from a Virginia mining town to the DEA and the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. Based on the book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy, the miniseries stars Michael Keaton, who just won a Golden Globe for his role. V I E MAGAZ INE . TED LASSO Perhaps the feel-good show of the year for 2021, it seems everybody has been talking about Ted Lasso. The Apple TV+ dramedy stars a minor league American football coach played by Jason Sudeikis, hired to coach a professional English football club despite having no experience coaching soccer. As one might expect, hilarity ensues along with the uplifting moments that only a good sports story can provide.

THE MORNING SHOW Also streaming on Apple TV+, get “an inside look at the modern workplace through the lens of the people who help America wake up, pulling back the curtain on early morning television” in this drama starring Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell. If you ever wanted the juiciest dirt from behind the scenes of your favorite newsdesk, this series has got it all. Stay tuned, as Apple just announced a third season!

TURNER AND HOOCH

158 | F E BRUA R Y 2 02 2

MAID “After fleeing an abusive relationship, a young mother finds a job cleaning houses as she fights to provide for her child and build them a better future.” This Netflix Original series was released in October 2021 and provides a heavy dose of drama blended with heartfelt moments, tear-jerkers, and beautiful yet dreary Seattle scenery. It’s already garnered a handful of impressive award nominations and is worth a watch when you’re “in your feelings.”

Another heartwarming comedy with a healthy dose of serial crime drama, the Disney+ reboot of Turner & Hooch picks up a few decades from where the 1989 Tom Hanks film left off. Detective Scott Turner’s son, a U.S. Marshal played by Josh Peck, inherits the new Hooch, a drooling canine catastrophe who might teach him a thing or two about what it means to be partners. Although the series has not been picked up for a second season, it’s worth a watch for fans of the film and families looking for a fun mix of comedy and crime.

YOU If you haven’t heard about YOU, chances are you haven’t been on the internet at all in the past few years. The hair-raising thriller dropped its third season in October 2021 with more twists and turns than ever before. Catch up with Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) and Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) as they navigate the perils of suburban life and stir up some new ones. Catch the first three seasons on Netflix for a bloody good time.

The genesis of VIE’s first legacy coffee-table book, HOME—Inspirations for Home and Life, was a desire to write a love letter to the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast and the people who make it beautiful. Architects, interior designers, artisans, and chefs make their indelible marks on the area and all who visit it. “Most castles are protected by men. This one by women.” A noblewoman with political ambitions, a glittering New York socialite, and an artistic French schoolteacher live decades apart but are more connected than they’ll ever realize in Stephanie Dray’s 2021 novel. This USA Today bestseller and book club favorite is “based on the true story of an extraordinary castle in the heart of France and the remarkable women bound by its legacy.”

THE PEOPLE WE KEEP Lauded as one of 2021’s best books, Allison Larkin’s novel follows April Sawicki, a high-school dropout in the mid-1990s who lives in a beat-up motorhome and works at the local diner in her hometown that never actually felt like home. “When she ‘borrows’ her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night,” the synopsis says, “she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.”

ith nearly 40% of its land preserved, South Walton has pristine landscapes that attract visitors from around the world. This natural beauty is also a huge source of pride for locals who spend their time relaxing on the sugar-white sand here. Keeping things tidy at the beach can sometimes be a labor of love. And one local high school student has made it her personal mission to help cut down the clutter while creating a culture of cleanliness in one of her happy places. Hannah Smith of South Walton High recently launched a new pilot beach basket program in Grayton Beach, with the goal of improving overall tidiness by empowering fellow beachgoers to clean by committee.

access boardwalk. Visitors are encouraged to grab one of these baskets and spend a little time using it to collect trash. When finished, they can dispose of any refuse in the nearby bins before returning the basket to the stand for someone else to use. Hopefully, seeing others making an effort will motivate people to contribute as well. Smith has been monitoring the baskets to make sure they are all accounted for and in good shape. She also communicates regularly with lifeguards and beach vendors to get reports on how much the baskets are being used.

“I want to reduce the amount of litter in our water and on our beaches,” said Smith. “Overall, the main purpose of the program is to make for a cleaner community. This program is intended to get the community involved in keeping our beaches and oceans free of pollution.”

In addition to the general aesthetics of a cleaner beach, Smith noted that she was motivated to create a happier environment for some of the non-human visitors who frequent the beach.

In mid-September, she installed six baskets near the trash receptacles at the end of the Grayton Beach public beach

“This project is important to our area because we are surrounded by beautiful beaches and have a

responsibility to protect our wildlife by keeping their habitat free of litter,” she said. Keeping the beaches clear of refuse is particularly important for sea turtles who come here to lay eggs and nest. Local initiatives aimed at protecting these turtles preach keeping the sand free of obstacles by flattening sandcastles and removing any non-natural objects at the end of each day. This speaks to the overall mantra of “leave no trace.” Smith was inspired to start her basket program after visiting Plastics Beach in Hawaii – rated as one of the dirtiest places in the world. The beach is known for being constantly awash in garbage from around the globe, more than 90% of which is plastic. Smith took what she saw to heart and decided to take preventative action at home. Walton County Tourism Department’s Director of Beach Operations Brian Kellenberger said that he

was happy to see a community member not only present such a wonderful idea, but also have a clearcut plan and step up to make it happen. “It’s great to have young people in the community get involved with a meaningful project like this,” he said, adding that a lot of great ideas are submitted

to county leadership, but Smith was one of the few people to offer to put in the work to execute it. The baskets at Grayton Beach will be available until at least May 2022. At that time, the success of the program will be evaluated. Kellenberger said he’s curious to see how well the baskets hold up from months of use. If the program is successful, it might have a future at other regional beach accesses throughout the county. Visitors and locals alike will get the opportunity to feel even more of a sense of ownership when it comes to the beaches that bring them such joy.
