f walking alone in London is the greatest rest, then traveling as a trio makes it the most lively place you can be. This past October, we had the privilege of taking a five-day trip that felt like a month as we hit the city and then sojourned to the tiny village of Evershot in Dorset, England. It was all to visit the internationally lauded New Urbanist town of Poundbury on the outskirts of Dorchester. Founded by King Charles III when he was the Prince of Wales, Poundbury hosted the 2023 International Making Cities Livable conference as architecture pros gathered to study “The Ecology of Place.” Learn all about it at www.IMCL.online. Poundbury’s design influence in Britain compares to Seaside, Florida, in the US. An influential book by the King of England, A Vision of Britain, includes a section on Seaside and the interest that led him to meet with Seaside cofounder and visionary Robert Davis and town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk of DPZ CoDesign shortly before breaking ground on his UK development in 1993. It was a thrill to see Poundbury in person and attend the conference on behalf of the Seaside Institute and VIE.

The ascension of King Charles III to the throne meant a new owner for Poundbury. The latest Duke of Cornwall, Prince William of Wales, took on the role from His Majesty and has shown passion for the development. Jordan Staggs, Seaside Institute executive director Christy Milliken, and I made great travel mates, effortlessly mixing work and pleasure in what felt like an art form. As vice chair of the Seaside Institute, I am excited (and a tad nervous) to officially take the gavel of the incumbent chair from the incomparable Jeff Zehnder, founder of Zehnder Communications, at the annual Seaside Prize Weekend. February 2–4 marks its thirtieth year as we honor individuals and organizations whose innovations help reimagine how modern communities are built and shape our lives. Victor Dover and Joseph Kohl of Dover, Kohl & Partners Town Planning (DoverKohl.com) are this year’s Seaside Prize recipients, and we are thrilled to recognize their contributions. E. F. San Juan (EFSanJuan.com), a third-generation custom moulding, millwork, and cabinetry firm located in Youngstown, Florida, is a presenting sponsor of the Seaside Prize Weekend, and their craftsmanship has transformed many of the town’s homes and the esteemed Chapel at Seaside. Company founder Ed San Juan has created magnificent custom wood boxes to hold the coveted Seaside Prize keys, giving the awards the heritage and dignity they deserve.

We spent the first night in London at One Aldwych (read all about this in our editor Jordan Staggs’s article, “One Aldwych Comes Alive: Culture and Comfort in Covent Garden”) before the Prince’s Foundation hosted the opening night reception at the Garrison Chapel in Chelsea. Our five-star accommodation in Dorset was the rural escape at Summer Lodge Country House Hotel, Restaurant, and Spa in Evershot (see it in our December 2023 issue). Its four acres of beautiful gardens and picturesque settings are a short jaunt from Poundbury. The lodge has been the star of several movies, including Jane Austen’s Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Emma Woodhouse. We thoroughly immersed ourselves and enjoyed exploring the area where famed and revered author Thomas Hardy lived.
It truly is a small world, after all, as people are genuinely more alike than we often realize. The New Urbanism movement echoes this sentiment with its vision and tenants learning and creating worldwide. It’s a privilege to travel, as it truly opens the mind to the fact we are all connected. As an architecture buff, I can’t wait to get to Brno, the second city of the Czech Republic, to visit its amazing houses. On top of my list is Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat, the architect’s great European masterpiece, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cherry on the cake will be finishing my trip in Vienna, a short train ride from Brno, where I’ll catch up with my favorite Klimts after visiting the new Roy Lichtenstein retrospective at the Albertina museum—an art lover’s dream!

I want to go on an African safari to witness elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions, and other magnificent creatures in their natural habitats. I’m inspired to view the awesome beauty of Africa’s vast landscapes and learn more about the art and culinary customs of its many vibrant cultures. My travel research finds that the best and safest countries to visit on safari in 2024 include Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, and Kenya, noted as the birthplace of the safari. Plus, I really like the look of those chic Out of Africa safari fashions in khaki and green!
This year, Puglia, Italy, is at the top of my bucket list! Last year’s “European Summer” craze may be over, but an early May trip to this region still ensures warm temperatures without the crowds. Unlike Tuscany, Rome, and Lake Como, this is a largely overlooked destination, making it a “top secret” Italian favorite! From olive groves to private coastal beaches, timeless architecture, and hands-on culinary experiences, it’s got all the makings of a perfect getaway. I will be dreaming of handmade focaccia and cobblestone streets until further notice.
I have two wildly different answers to this question, and I’m hoping to make both happen. The first is Cape Town, South Africa, where it’s warm and sunny, with room for a lot of adventure. I’m thinking cage diving with sharks, bungee jumping, wine tasting—the whole nine yards (obviously not at the same time!). Cape Town has been sitting pretty on my bucket list for ages, and 2024 is screaming at me to check it off. The second destination on my list is Apalachicola, Florida. Despite being just a two-hour drive from my residence in the 30-A area—a journey significantly shorter than the eighteen-hour flights to Cape Town—I have yet to explore this nearby gem.

The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, of course! This South Florida destination has attracted affluent vacationers since it opened in 1947. Its rosy-hued British colonial facade ushers in hotel guests as well as visitors from the luxury shops on the adjacent Worth Avenue who fancy a glass of wine or want to admire the property’s whimsical interiors and lush landscaping.
Although its exterior was initially beige, The Colony’s history is anything but bland. Since the beginning, it has been a stop for an A-list who’s who, with a lengthy roster of impressive guests including Judy Garland, Lena Horne, John Lennon, Sophia Loren, Frank Sinatra, and John F. Kennedy, along with royals from around the globe such as the Maharanee of Jodhpur, the Shah of Persia, the President of Nicaragua, three kings, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and numerous other dignitaries. It is the type of hotel you see in golden age films, where champagne is always flowing amid lavish dinner parties and, no doubt, a fair amount of spicy secrets.

Today, The Colony welcomes guests to stay and play in its ninety-three guest rooms and suites. A celebration of its seventieth anniversary and new ownership under husband-wife duo Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall saw the property undergo an extensive refresh starting in 2017 and running through 2022. However, they are continually making updates to their “Pink Paradise.” Rooms and common spaces designed by Mimi McMakin and Celerie Kemble of Kemble Interiors beckon interior design and architecture lovers, fashionistas, and discerning guests of all backgrounds to explore. Meanwhile, the estate across the property from the hotel proper has been reimagined with seven signature villas that offer a home-away-from-home experience in the most stylish way possible. Interior darlings Celerie Kemble, Aerin Lauder, and Mark D. Sikes partnered with the Wetenhalls to create the villas’ look and feel. This is thanks to the Wetenhalls’ care (and flair) in restoring the icon to its Camelot-era glory for the Judy Garlands and Frank Sinatras of the 2020s.” During a stay, guests should take advantage of the sun and fun while lounging on the gorgeously decorated pool deck or the nearby beach beneath fringed umbrellas with the help of their very own “Beach Butler” and Beach Buggy golf cart service—or the Beach Runner, a vintage Land Rover Defender 110 decked out, of course, in Colony pink. The pool awaits those who fancy a plunge or a float, and in-house fitness classes are available for those who want to keep up with their routine or try something new.

Unlike many other areas we visited, Port Andratx was pretty empty, and we could always secure tables at restaurants without a reservation, even in the middle of summer with a group of eight. The area is dotted with abundant restaurants, bars, and shops, making it a delightful and authentic destination to explore. I highly recommend incorporating a boat charter into your Mallorca itinerary—many beautiful places are best accessed via boat. We rented a yacht through GetMyBoat.com and opted for one with a dinghy, paddleboards, flippers, and goggles, allowing us to explore various areas, indulge in cave diving, and make the most of our coastal exploration. We enjoyed a myriad of beautiful beaches, hidden caves, and secret spots known to our local captain. A highlight moment occurred when we anchored in Sant Elm, a charming village with delicious restaurants and a picturesque beach. We had paella delivered directly to our boat from the restaurant Es Raor, making the entire excursion unforgettable.

With its stunning landscapes, vibrant towns, and azure waters, the isle captivated my heart and soul, and I absolutely loved traveling there last year with a group of my closest friends. Reminiscing and planning adventures for 2024 led me to create this small travel guide to help others experience the magic of this Mediterranean gem. As Mallorca is a big island, having a car is essential to embrace its beauty fully. Upon arriving at the airport, you’ll find numerous car rental options, providing you freedom to discover the island’s hidden treasures. e visited many beautiful beaches in Mallorca, but a few stand out. Cala Llombards, a beach on my Pinterest board for years, exceeded all expectations. It was busy, but we had no problem finding parking or a place to sit. It’s a sandy beach, you can cliff jump, and there’s a beach bar and restaurant steps away from the water. Another beach I was longing to visit was Cala Deià, a rocky beach next to Ca’s Patro March, a cliffside and beachfront restaurant. This beach is in the dreamy town of Deià, a must-visit in Mallorca. It’s a twisty, turny, and tiny road from town to the beach and restaurant, so if you get carsick, this may not be the beach for you. In my opinion, I would only go to this beach if you are also eating at Ca’s Patro March, as you are lying on rocks on the beach, and parking can be challenging. I highly recommend making a reservation at Ca’s, which can be made fifteen days in advance of your booking, and they go fast! Opt for brunch or lunch reservations to ensure you don’t miss the breathtaking view. On the way to Cala Deià, you must stop and explore Valldemossa, an unbelievably picturesque town. One of my favorite parts of the trip was our La Trapa Ruins hike. It’s a difficult 4.7-mile loop that we did clockwise, meaning we experienced the best views and the hardest part of the hike first. This trail has incredible views of the water and Dragonera Island, and it is dotted with stone ruins that you can explore. It’s a strenuous hike, so pack accordingly! Home to more than half of Mallorca’s population, Palma is a must-visit city! This vibrant and expansive urban hub has a massive cathedral and tons of bars, clubs, shops, restaurants, museums, art galleries, and so much more. I recommend spending a day here as it has something for every traveler to enjoy. As I wrap up this mini travel guide to Mallorca, I’m already browsing flights for my next visit. A SIP of FRENCH CULTURE Spirit lovers can embark on all-new experiences in the property’s historic La Cave Wine Cellar. Built in 1972 and located two stories below sea level, La Cave Wine Cellar is one of the largest private cellars in the Caribbean, stocked with 12,000 bottles of wine and Champagne, including 150 labels of Bordeaux. There, guests can enjoy tastings or even private candlelit dinners. Travelers can also sample from more than 200 carefully curated regional rums as part of the new La Cave 200 rum-tasting experience. This exciting event marked the first opus of “Marcel & Ses Amis,” La Samanna’s exciting new program comprising special culinary events led by Chef Marcel Ravin in collaboration with noteworthy chefs from around the world. First up was two-Michelin-star Chef Bruno Verjus, owner of Paris restaurant Table and the highest new entry to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list at number 10. Verjus kicked off the anniversary celebrations with a weekend of culinary programming. Belmond also commissioned a special publication written by Chris Wallace—former US editor of Mr Porter and former executive editor of Interview magazine—diving into the hotel’s colorful history, stretching back to the 1970s when it opened as a family home. Since then, La Samanna has been a magnet for Hollywood stars, heads of state, and the international jet set, from Cindy Crawford (who learned to water ski at the resort) to Martin

Scorsese and Robert De Niro (who finished the shooting draft of Raging Bull on-site), Richard Nixon, and Andy Warhol. nthusiastic vacationers hit the road, the skies, the rails, the seas, and even ventured into space for a few short minutes throughout a record-setting year of travel in 2023. This year is predicted to be just as busy, but 2024 travel plans are expected to look and feel a bit different— in a good way. “After the mad post-pandemic frenzy, people are no longer desperate to grab whatever they can get,” says Jack Ezon, founder of EMBARK Beyond. “We are seeing a much more mindful decision-making process shifting the narrative from being flashy or uberexclusive to focusing on quality and craftsmanship.” So, rather than fancy white tablecloth cuisine, think delightfully delicious local foods (which may also be Michelin guide-worthy). Instead of navigating congested urban landscapes, imagine quiet walks through quaint historic villages or finding those special tucked-away locations in travelers’ favorite cities. “People are seeking to feel more enmeshed and immersed where they are,” says Rebecca Masri of Little Emperors, a luxury travel members club.

Surveys from Virtuoso, a global luxury travel network, reveal that 70 percent of travel advisors have seen an increase in culinary travel, and 58 percent of their clients want food and winethemed tours focused on hyperlocal products and cultural authenticity. Long known as a destination for foodies, San Sebastián in the Basque Country of northern Spain continues to please palates with the unique flavors of small snacks served on toothpicks called pintxo, paired with the region’s refreshing and slightly fizzy Txakolina wines. Those seeking the comfort of high-low gastronomy will be happy to grab a seat in San Sebastián’s comfortably casual Casa Urola restaurant. Specializing in grilled fish and seafood, it’s been open since 1956 and is in the Michelin Guide again for 2024. Want to take the best culinary souvenir home with you? Join a cooking class to learn how to make regional foods. The Royal Mansour Marrakech, for example, has just launched a cooking school where guests cook shoulder-to-shoulder with Michelin-star chefs. Or take in the aromatherapy of Moroccan spices in the hotel’s hammam, where saffron is used in spa treatments.

Big Appeal for Smaller Ships While cruise ships keep getting larger and larger, there’s a growing demand for sailing on smaller vessels. They’re seen as less intrusive on ports of call and can anchor in harbors rarely visited by other passenger ships. But the tiniest of places we went ashore was in the Isles of Scilly, a gardenlike archipelago in southwest England off the coast of Cornwall. Local boatmen ferried us to a small dock to explore the wide beaches, natural surroundings, and a small winery and to buy baked goods in the teeny post office. It felt good to positively impact the small businesses there, tread lightly on their environment, and feel so welcomed. The Star Legend’s journey concluded with a fantastic finale navigating up the Thames River and under London’s Tower Bridge, something larger ships would not be permitted to do.
BETTER FOR YOU BEING THERE Sustainability concerns are playing a more vital role in the travel planning equation. The Virtuoso Impact Report found that 88 percent of travelers want to see tourism dollars go toward protecting the planet, including wildlife conservation. In Florida, the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach has created family-friendly rooms themed around Winter the Dolphin, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to support the care of rescued marine animals. Tell Me a Story Storytelling is a significant component of what travelers want today. “These micro experiences are really important as guests seek a higher level of education and engagement,” says Misty Belles of Virtuoso. Literally going higher to tell a story, Napa Valley Balloons lifts guests via hot air balloon two thousand feet above and across the beautiful landscape. The pilot points out wineries, vineyards, and towns below and shares details of hot air ballooning mechanics today—not too different from the time of its invention in the late 1700s. More stories of the region emerge on the rails as the Napa Valley Wine Train takes travelers through the area and back in time. “The train tracks were established in 1864,” says general manager Nathan Davis. “We are the ‘everything experience’ for the valley, from wine tasting to food to phenomenal photography to just about the best vistas in the valley.” The harmony of food, wine, wellness, and music shapes the story of Meritage Resort and Spa, the perfect location to set the stage for a vacation in Napa Valley. Over-tourism is still an issue in super popular Italy and Greece, especially in summer, so smart travelers are booking shoulder seasons or even off-season to avoid the crowds. If you’ve got France on your travel list, take heed of Virtuoso surveys. Due to elevated interest in the upcoming Paris Olympics, as well as its status as a beloved destination among foodies and art connoisseurs, France should be extra busy this year. Meanwhile, our neighbors to the north say they’d love to welcome more visitors. “We don’t have demand for all we have in Canada!” says Mark Telio of Entrée Destinations. Looking for luxury on a budget? Ezon says Argentina is a bargain. “Extreme inflation puts the country on a half-off sale. There’s never been a better time to explore the glacier-cut mountains of Patagonia, the wine lands of Mendoza, or the vibrant city of Buenos Aires.” To make international travel a bit easier this year, there’s no need for a visa to go to Europe until June 2025. Falk Weiss adds, “We have good news that passports are going to be able to be ordered to arrive much more quickly!” Bon voyage and safe travels!

n the heart of London’s artistic Covent Garden neighborhood, a recently reimagined five-star hotel beckons those who consider themselves “Londoners at heart, wherever they might be from.” One Aldwych, eponymously named for the historic building’s address, lies conveniently off the main thoroughfare known as the Strand, famous for its affluent cultural destinations, including theaters, museums, art galleries, restaurants, and shops. One Aldwych embraces the vibrant energy of the neighborhood while offering a soothing respite with its beautifully appointed guest rooms, multiple dining options, and award-winning spa. It’s fitting that a small group of VIE journalists and editors enjoyed this gorgeous hotel during the fall of 2023, as we were delighted to find the art nouveau building, completed in 1905, was home to the Morning Post newspaper. Continuing the Mewès & Davis-designed building’s editorial history, Inveresk Paper Company bought it in 1927, and it housed several well-known magazines—including Tatler and The Illustrated London News—during the publisher’s ownership. The independently owned One Aldwych hotel opened to the public in 1998 and has since built a reputation for excellence and top-tier hospitality. A complete multimillion-dollar refurbishment in 2019 saw designer Robert Angell working with the hotel to create guest rooms and suites that are “timelessly chic,” featuring gorgeous mouldings, soft color palettes, and furnishings with a modern romantic touch. Over four hundred pieces of carefully curated original artwork fill the hotel, including each of the 101 bedrooms and suites. Fresh fruit and flowers are always waiting upon guests’ arrival, making them feel they’re living in their own London palace.
In addition to standard (although they feel anything but ordinary) single and double rooms, a range of suites makes it possible for repeat visitors to experience One Aldwych differently with every stay. The Somerset Suite is designed as a posh apartment, with a circular living room, separate bedroom and dressing room, and the possibility of connecting to three other bedrooms for group stays. Named for its iconic view, the Waterloo Bridge Suite offers a similar design to the Somerset. Meanwhile, the Terrace Suite provides a private walk for alfresco dining and relaxation with a view of Covent Garden’s historic rooftops. However, those searching for the ultimate One Aldwych experience should consider the Dome Suite, whose quarters are situated—you guessed it—right inside the signature dome at the building’s north point. with inspiration from Teague’s love of nature. Like the Lobby Bar, Indigo is also open to the public and offers an excellent spot for a pre-theater dinner or date night. Room service is the best of both worlds for those staying at the hotel as you enjoy the culinary team’s creations from the comfort of your home away from home.
Although there are many options for a bite to eat or a cup of tea around the hotel, guests needn’t venture further than the Lobby Bar or Indigo restaurant— or even their room—to satisfy their dining needs. The interior experts at Fabled Studio of London took inspiration from the building’s art nouveau and Parisian touches when redoing the Lobby Bar in 2019, with plush seating, chic patterned carpets, and captivating artwork throughout. The stunning floral arrangement at its center is refreshed and redesigned with the seasons, along with the florals throughout the hotel and outside its main entrance created by resident flower extraordinaire Mark Siredzuk. The Lobby Bar is popular with Londoners and guests alike and is open to the public daily from breakfast to after-dinner cocktails. Fabled Studio also gave the Indigo dining room a bright, elegant makeover befitting the royal treatment of the rest of the hotel. Its location on the second floor overlooking the Lobby Bar makes for an excellent lunch or dinner locale with a lively yet refined atmosphere. Chef Dominic Teague and his team curate fresh, seasonal menus featuring farm-sourced ingredients and British classics
The Health Club at One Aldwych is another perk anyone can enjoy, with luxury spa treatments for face and body, a spacious twenty-four-hour gym, the eighteen-meter chlorine-free lap pool, steam room, sauna, and more. Even if you aren’t taking a dip, it’s worth it to venture down to the pool for a look, as the underground space is beautifully tranquil, featuring a big screen showing ocean scenes, original artwork by Pol Bury, and a gorgeous mural behind the dazzling chrome spiral staircase. More secrets abound in the form of The Library—a private, quiet space reserved for guests to relax and dine away from the bustle of the lobby—and the thirty-seat Screening Room cinema, where you can sit back with popcorn and enjoy a roster of old classics, new films, presentations, and live broadcasts. alton County Tourism is excited to unveil the new brand chosen to represent the welcoming communities in Walton County located north of the Choctawhatchee Bay— Authentic Walton. The branding project followed a multistep process involving stakeholder research, ideation, trademark search, and adoption. Local business owners and community stakeholders participated in a brand positioning study, with the findings informing the strategic direction for brand development. “Authentic Walton” encompasses what was uncovered in the surveys as to what makes this area so unique—traditional values, a welcoming sense of community, genuineness, and steadfastness. Walton County is so much more than the beach. It is home to springs, rivers, lakes, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in Northwest Florida. Just above the Choctawhatchee Bay, a wide variety of shopping, dining, and activities await. Encompassing Freeport, Paxton, and DeFuniak Springs, these communities are filled with incredible historic treasures and pastoral landscapes. DeFuniak Springs is home to excellent restaurants, shops, activities, and a Historic Downtown District. If you’ve never been, you’re in for a treat! While you peruse the local shops downtown, offering everything from gifts to fashion, books, antiques, and more, grab some legendary lunch at H&M Hot Dogs. It’s the oldest hot dog stand in Florida and specializes in incredibly creative dogs and tasty burgers. For a snack, breakfast, or afternoon pick-me-up, swing by Perla Baking Co. to peruse their fresh-baked goodies such as pastries and croissants—and yes, desserts (judgment-free). They also have organic coffees and teas to perk you up. Their name is a hybrid abbreviation of “perfect lake,” which sets up your next stop quite nicely. A walking tour of Lake DeFuniak lets you stroll back in time with a fantastic display of architectural artistry. Nearly two hundred historic buildings surround the lake, about forty of which are noted on the National Register of Historic Places. Classic Victorian homes are prevalent, and even newer homes offer an Old World elegance—constructed in styles such as Queen Anne and Colonial Revival. Some of these incredible buildings were part of the Chautauqua Assembly that once thrived here. The Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood once filled up for presentations by luminaries such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Jennings Bryan, and Red Cross founder Clara Barton. While the assembly closed nearly a century ago, you can still take an informative walking tour around Circle Drive. Eighteen detailed signs carry you through its history, complemented by a map of the 1884 campus that offers a great then-and-now perspective. The Chautauqua Vineyards & Winery in DeFuniak Springs is a beautiful spot to unwind after you tour Circle Drive. Most of the working vineyard is located off-site, but about ten “preview rows” offer a showcase on the front lawn as you pull in. During harvest season, you can even pick fresh grapes to get a taste of the origin of their distinct wines. Muscadine varieties are the specialty here—Carlos for white and Noble for red. They offer complimentary tastings and a very popular Old Vine Wine Club. When it’s time for dinner, Café Nola offers great Gulf seafood in a New Orleansstyle ambience. Before or after your meal, plan on visiting their Bourbon Street Lounge for a craft cocktail. 64 | F E BRUA R Y 2 0 24
Serving as a lively crossroads between the north and south ends of Walton County, Freeport began around 1830 when settlers were attracted to the natural harbor of LaGrange Bayou near the eastern end of the Bay and the mouth of the Choctawhatchee River. The settlement was originally known as Genoa and later Four Mile Landing. However, during the Civil War, it took on its present-day name because there was no charge to dock at the local port area. Freeport’s bayside location is still part of its allure. Stretching about thirty miles from end to end and between four and six miles across at any given point, Choctawhatchee Bay is ideal for boating, fishing, paddleboarding, and swimming. The shores are lined with parks and green spaces for picnics or just enjoying the view. Head to the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center, where they aim to turn visitors into conservationists through fascinating classes, interpretive exhibits, and opportunities for involvement. The center educates more than 5,200 students each year from a five-county area in the Panhandle and is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays in June and July. From amazing local food and preserved natural beauty to eclectic shopping and fascinating history, Freeport has it all. So, treat yourself to a day (or more) of exploration here. You’ll soon discover why this small city is on the verge of great things to come!

At the northernmost edge of the county, amid the pastoral beauty of rolling pastures and woodland areas, you’ll find the quiet little town of Paxton, Florida. With a small population, the town is very family-oriented and welcoming. A history of farming had already been well-established when Paxton became home to the area’s first sawmill in 1903. As commerce around the mill gradually expanded, the surrounding community flourished. From those early roots in farming, Paxton continues to grow. The Paxton Agricultural Center is a fun place to learn more about how the farming industry works, including up-close introductions to cute animals and heavy machinery. Throw in the nearby baseball field, and it’s always a hit with the kids! The Ag Center also hosts events during the year, including the Bobby Kemp Sr. Heritage Day festival each September. The great outdoors also plays a vital role in the area’s recreational culture. Paxton is nestled against Lake Jackson, which straddles the Florida-Alabama line, providing an ideal outlet for leisure time and nature appreciation. Perhaps the best way to fully enjoy the lake is by getting out on the water!
Lakewood Park, just northeast of Paxton, features wooded trails through peaceful landscapes. You can even climb to the highest point of geographical elevation in all of Florida. At a modest 345 feet above sea level, it’s the lowest high point of any state in the U.S. (contrast that with the highest—Alaska’s Denali at more than 20,320 feet). However, this plateau, known as Britton Hill, still offers plenty of photoworthy views for adventurers who want to change their altitude. Most importantly, as you wander between attractions in Authentic Walton, you’ll encounter plenty of genuinely friendly locals who are happy to share their love of the area. It’s a day trip that will reveal a whole new slice of life to lift your spirits.

s someone who doesn’t consider herself a traditional “foodie,” my appreciation for a memorable dining experience revolves around more than just the intricacies of a dish. During a recent visit to Lisbon, Portugal, I dined at many exceptional restaurants catering to discerning palates and those like myself who seek a comfortable blend of yummy food, inviting ambience, and attentive service. Among the tile-adorned streets, Lisbon locals and tourists can find food ranging from authentic Portuguese dishes to global delights. While traversing this vibrant city on foot, I found myself at three amazing restaurants I’d certainly include in a love letter to Lisbon. The abundance of breathtaking views in Lisbon turned out to be a delightful surprise. A simple turn of the corner can unveil sweeping views of the city. Miradouros, or viewpoints, are scattered throughout, offering glimpses of colorful buildings, stunning architecture, and serene water views. Another great part of this city is its numerous rooftop destinations, providing fantastic vistas for people enjoying meals and drinks. One rooftop that captured my attention was Javá Rooftop, boasting panoramic views of the city and surrounding area. I sat on the outside terrace, soaked up the sunshine, and ordered a Mediterranean dish I still think about often. A visit to a rooftop is a must while in Lisbon, and if you’re in the mood for a trendy and cool atmosphere, Javá Rooftop is the place to be! For my first meal in Lisbon, I stumbled upon an Asian restaurant called Boa-Bao, and I’m so glad I did. Boa-Bao is a stylish and casual restaurant based on a Pan-Asian cuisine concept with an authentic selection of dishes that respect original recipes. The

chefs, many from the countries Boa-Bao represents, whip up dishes that take you on a tasty journey through China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and more. The vibe inside is like stepping into an Asian market from the 1920s. My server recommended I try an Asian beer, which perfectly complemented the two entrees I ordered. The laid-back atmosphere, flavorful dishes, and refreshing drink options made it an experience I won’t forget. If you’re up for an unforgettable culinary adventure, Boa-Bao is a must-try, and I guarantee you’ll leave with a satisfied palate and a smile on your face. V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 69

On my last night in the city, I overheard fellow travelers chatting about Rocco, a restaurant conveniently located just a few blocks away from my hotel. With no prior dinner plans, I decided to give it a shot, intrigued by the positive reviews I had heard. Upon arrival, the doorman offered me a warm greeting, followed by a woman who kindly took my coat. The entire establishment was breathtaking—stunning, chic, and meticulously styled in partnership with interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán. It is evident a lot of time was spent perfecting every detail. While I was still in awe, the hostess took a moment to explain the restaurant’s concept, comprising three distinct areas: the Gastrobar, the Crudo Bar, and the Ristorante. Adorned in spirit bottles from all over the world, the Gastrobar was the first to catch my eye. This space offered a global culinary selection, and the Crudo Bar included a top-notch counter where fish and seafood were expertly prepared. Opting for the Ristorante, I settled into an ambience dedicated to traditional Italian cuisine. Servers in white suits attended to me while I enjoyed a glass of wine from an extensive list. Delicious bread and oil were served, and I spent time looking around the restaurant, mesmerized by the decor. I ordered an incredible risotto, marking an exceptional end to my time in Lisbon. The waitstaff, consisting of several well-coordinated individuals, ensured that every detail met my satisfaction. It was undoubtedly a ten out of ten experience.

While I thoroughly enjoyed scouting out these restaurants during my Lisbon exploration, they’re just a few of the city’s incredible options. It’s essential during a visit to Portugal to try pastéis de nata, the celebrated Portuguese custard tarts, and to savor a glass of Port wine made in Portugal’s Douro Valley. And, although my inexperienced taste buds hesitated to partake, I’ve heard that a visit to Portugal is incomplete without sampling sardines. With so many tasty spots in Lisbon and many dishes awaiting exploration, I plan to return soon!

EXPLORATION WITH SMITHSONIAN JOURNEYS PONANT and Smithsonian Journeys are teaming up for the third consecutive year to offer all-new sailings in 2024. As with the previous journeys, these itineraries will be led by two Smithsonian Journeys experts with a background in art history, solar astrophysics, international relations, or another field. Their expertise and knowledge will deepen travelers’ immersion in the place and showcase the world’s most spectacular destinations in a whole new light. Among the departures are a seven-night expedition along New Zealand’s South Island (February 15–22), a weeklong journey into the cultural and natural treasures of Japan (May 21–28), and an epic discovery of Alaska’s Inside Passage ( July 5–13 and July 20–28).

They will also lead scientific research initiatives that inspire guests to roll up their sleeves.
LAUNCH OF THE EXPLORERS CLUB COLLABORATION This year also sees the launch of a new chapter in exploration now that PONANT and The Explorers Club—established more than a century ago and devoted to scientific expeditions of all disciplines—have joined forces. WHAT’S NEW WITH LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT Departing September 6, 2024, Le Commandant Charcot will trace the path of the great explorer Umberto Nobile to Earth’s northernmost point. Inaccessible to traditional ships, this will mark the first-ever voyage along the transarctic maritime route from the legendary Bering Strait to the icecovered land of Svalbard and the Beaufort Sea to attempt to reach both the elusive Magnetic and Geographic North Poles. The twenty-one-day dedicated research mission will be led by acclaimed adventurer Alban Michon, American photo ambassador Cindy Miller Hopkins, and a multidisciplinary team of around twenty scientists. Their presence on Le Commandant Charcot, which serves as a floating research center with two onboard laboratories, a meteorological station, and a helipad and helicopter used solely to aid with scouting and research, will sharpen guests’ understanding of the polar world and partake in important scientific investigations. 74 | F E BRUA R Y 2 0 24
NEW JOURNEYS IN JAPAN PONANT’s new Japan itineraries offer a rare look at the captivating country, where ancient traditions fuse with modern marvels and spectacular natural landscapes. Departing April 20–27, the weeklong “Kyushu’s Secret Islands and Ancestral Heritage” itinerary invites guests to discover the western part of the island. Explore UNESCO Heritage Sites, charming coastal villages (including the only Christian site in the Kumamoto Prefecture), and the wildlife-rich islands of Jeju, South Korea, and Yakushima, the former of which is dominated by the area’s tallest volcano and the latter of which is home to the rare Yakushima monkey. Also departing from Kagoshima, May 4–12, is a separate itinerary: “Japan, Natural Archipelago and Secular Heritage.” This trip will uncover the gems of western Kyushu and the Seto Inland Sea, with a thematic focus on Japan’s culture, ancestral traditions, and little-known Christian heritage. On a remote beach at the tip of the Mexican peninsula that separates the Sea of Cortez from the mighty Pacific Ocean, I walked along a spit of honey-colored sand between impressive rock formations the likes of which I had never seen. took in the view, standing clear of the crashing azure waves on the Pacific side. “You’re here from Florida; I don’t have to tell you not to get in the ocean today, but some people don’t get it!” our guide had said when warning us about the stronger-than-usual currents in the surf thanks to recent storms. Marveling at the locale and the array of fishing and leisure boats in the distance, it was still worth taking the water taxi across the bay from SUR to Lovers Beach. The chorus to Jimmy Buffett’s “Somethin’ ’Bout a Boat” played in my head—fittingly, considering the vista and the hundreds of vessels skimming about in the Bahía de Cabo San Lucas. It was also fitting because just two nights before, I had the privilege of hearing the song performed by one of its writers, Patrick Davis. Davis, a Nashville-based musician, songwriter, and producer, is also the founder of Songwriters in Paradise. This small festival originated in Hope Town, the Bahamas, and now takes place annually in Cabo San Lucas, Napa, and Healdsburg, where Davis invites a curated group of his friends and fellow songwriters to perform at intimate venues for a crowd of about a hundred lucky patrons. During the SIP Cabo 2023 Welcome Party in the Sand on November 29, Davis and SUR owner Lee Vosburgh thanked guests while a gorgeous orange moon rose over the evening’s venue, SUR Beach House. Davis then took the stage with Tyler Reeve and Gabe Dixon to kick off the four-day festival.

Le monde avis told a heartfelt story about his friend and colleague Jimmy Buffett before performing “Somethin’ ’Bout a Boat” in a sincere tribute—with several boats in the background as the gentle waves lapped at the shore. Guests dined on fresh seafood and incredible cocktails from SUR while Reeve and Dixon joined Davis in the round, taking turns playing songs and telling the stories of their origins. They also improvised with one another on the spot in the way that makes songwriter events such as these so special to those who witness them. Improv night took on a new meaning, though, as the second round of SIP’s first night in Cabo paid Mother Nature her due and moved off the beach as high tide nearly reached the edge of the stage. For the safety of the equipment and performers, Lauren Jenkins, Chris Stills, and Marc Broussard moved their round up to the SUR patio for another handful of songs amid an intimate and enthusiastic crowd. A genuinely standout moment included Broussard’s rendition of “Cry to Me,” during which he was joined by Stills, Jenkins, and David Ryan Harris. Davis jokingly dubbed the impromptu rearrangement “The High Tide Sessions.” From the beach to the stage to the bar, the camaraderie between these songwriters is palpable as they laugh, swap stories, and mingle with guests. That’s what makes SIP so special, says Davis (and everyone else we spoke to); it’s a chance for attendees to spend four whole days and nights with the performing songwriters in what SIP publicist Emily Ginsberg described as a “summer camp” type experience. Partner venues and hotels, like SUR and Bahia Hotel & Beach House (both owned by Vosburgh and partners), become the hub for activity and give ticketholders a chance to get to know the artists while giving the artists more time to spend with each other, as well. “We all play festivals around the world, but even if we’re playing at the same event, we’re not often on the same stage or coming and going at the same time, so we rarely see one another,” Davis explains. “SIP really started as an excuse to spend a vacation playing music and hanging out with friends, but it’s evolved into much more.”

Le monde he songwriters and festivalgoers reveled in once-in-a-lifetime moments together, sipping margaritas and enjoying the incredible Cabo sunshine. Leah Blevins made her SIP stage debut on November 30, captivating the audience with her distinctive Southern belle’s voice and sweetness to match. Former VIE magazine cover star Ashley Campbell and her David Ryan Harris partner Thor Jensen, who recently moved to London together to enjoy playing the UK music circuit, regaled us with songs we hadn’t heard before and a rendition of “Gentle on My Mind” in honor of songwriter John Hartford and Ashley’s father, Glen Campbell. Chris Stills, the rock-androll legacy (son of Stephen Stills and French musician Véronique Sanson) and a SIP regular, lit up the SUR patio with an energetic rendition of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” with Campbell and Jensen accompanying. Americana singer-songwriter Lauren Jenkins, named an “Artist to Watch” by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pandora, and more, sang like a captivating siren beneath the rising moon. Three spectacular evenings of performances at SUR were preceded by days spent exploring Cabo, chartering boat trips around the bay and surrounding area to see the famous rock formations on the peninsula, lounging on the beach and by the pool, and enjoying the fantastic relaxed Mexican atmosphere and cuisine at Bahia Hotel and its signature restaurant, Bar Esquina (if you go, don’t skip the wood-fired pizzas—trust me!), plus coffee, smoothies, and fresh pastries to go from the hotel’s on-site café. Bahia Hotel and SUR Beach House have become integral parts of the SIP Cabo experience, and Davis and Vosburgh have fostered a lasting friendship while putting the festival on over the past seven years. The laid-back yet gorgeously luxe boutique property, once a private home converted to a small hotel, was completely remodeled and expanded by Vosburgh and his business partners from New York after they purchased it in 2007. Post-recession and many ups and downs later, they acquired and remodeled what is now SUR Beach House, giving the hotel what it lacked before—private beach access and a broader range of activities for guests. SUR and Bar Esquina have become popular destinations among other tourists and locals, as well. Talking about his staff prior to opening, Vosburgh referenced wanting to 82 | F E BRUA R Y 2 0 24
make Bar Esquina like Cheers—a friendly neighborhood hangout where everyone is welcome. He laughed that when they opened, the staff were excited that he finally got to do a “cheers” in celebration, and Vosburgh realized they were unfamiliar with the television series Cheers, so he showed it to them. He lives on the property with his wife and is quick to strike up a conversation, so be sure to say hello if you visit! After just a couple of days at Bahia for SIP, all the hotel and beach club staff and fellow guests truly started to feel like friends, and we were sad to leave. The feeling seemed mutual among our fellow SIP attendees and the songwriters who had so graciously poured their hearts and souls out through music and storytelling—and tequila shots—for the past four days. Songwriter Marc Broussard enthusiastically proposed that “fifty-two weeks of SIP” would be a great idea, and we can’t help but agree. The fun closed out on Saturday afternoon with a pool party listening event at Bahia Hotel. Guests took over the sun loungers, hot tub, and Bar Esquina poolside tiki hut as the SIP Cabo 2023 songwriters strummed and sang one last time in the round and together. Davis and Vosburgh once again thanked everyone involved for another fantastic experience, and the crowd applauded and raised their margaritas and cervezas in gratitude. While honoring all the memories and the journey it took to build SIP into what it is today, Davis toasted and urged listeners, “Remember the good, everybody.” We are certainly looking back and smiling about these good times with friends old and new.

Securing a rental car is typically swift, and in no time, you’re cruising down the open road, making your way to Sami Siida, a Sami cultural center and museum located just ten kilometers outside of Bossekop in Alta. This is your essential first stop for delving into the heart of Sami culture. Sami Siida is the heart of the enduring indigenous Sami culture, which has thrived in this region for millennia. In the charming village of Máze, where 98 percent of its 200 inhabitants belong to the Sami community, you’ll be greeted with open arms by Johan P. Eira, the proud owner of Čávžo Safari. Eira represents one of the diverse Sami groups, each with unique traditional lifestyles and livelihoods dictated by their geographical and ecological surroundings. He is a reindeer-herding Sami, a man with a welcoming smile and an even warmer heart, eager to share his deep knowledge of the land and its rich history. Just remember, it’s considered

impolite to inquire about a gentleman’s reindeer count—a lesson learned with a big laugh. At Čávžo Safari, enchantment knows no seasonal boundaries. During the warmer months, you can embark on a riverboat journey to the renowned Sautso dam or immerse yourself in authentic Sami encounters while savoring traditional cuisine in their cozy lavvu. When winter arrives, you can partake in genuine traditions, from the art of reindeer herding to hearty meals (imagine serving guests in below-freezing weather) and soulful joiking. After an eventful first day, with many new impressions, the Thon Hotel in Kautokeino is the perfect place for a good night’s sleep. Kautokeino, about 130 kilometers south of Alta, has a population of merely 3,100 residents spread across Norway’s largest municipality by land area.

Day 2 Journey to Kautokeino and Beyond Kautokeino remains a remarkable hub for Sami culture, research, and education. The town boasts the esteemed Sami University and the true gem in Kautokeino’s crown: Juhls Silver Gallery. It invites travelers to explore the story of Regine and Frank Juhls, pioneers in silversmithing within the Sami community. Frank Juhls, a young Danish adventurer, worked as a handyman, while Regine, a young German girl, served as a maid in a reindeer herding family. Their paths crossed, and they started the gallery in 1959. What began as a simple wooden house evolved into one of the most unique cultural buildings in Northern Norway. The structure now shows off various architectural elements, including a roof mimicking a snowdrift, and new rooms are added every decade. As you explore the gallery, you’ll be delighted by unexpected treasures, such as a glass-walled hen and sheep barn and a room dedicated to the Juhls’ adventures in Afghanistan, to mention a few. The gallery constantly changes, with Regine crafting a mesmerizing glass mosaic in the main room, a futuristic tribute to Frank’s enduring legacy. After a visit, it is time to get back behind the wheel and embark on a picturesque journey from Kautokeino to Karasjok. Starting from Gievdneguoika, just north of Kautokeino, you’ll follow National Road 92 as it winds across the vast expanse of Finnmarksvidda, a journey that takes a little less than two hours.
Encounter the Locals of the Sami Capital Karasjok, known as the Sami capital, stands in contrast to Kautokeino. Tucked amid the pine forest along the Kárášjohka River, Karasjok is a bustling crossroads in the middle of the expansive plains. With its 1,800 inhabitants, the town offers a touch of urban life with hotels, eateries, and shops. It also houses the Sami Parliament, a symbol of Sami self-governance you can’t miss. One of the distinct charms of venturing into Karasjok lies in the warm hospitality of the locals who open their homes to visitors. A visit to Áldú unveils a world where Sire Márjá Wigelius immerses guests in the venerable tradition of reindeer herding, intertwined with the profound cultural narrative of the Sami’s eight seasons, all amid the cozy setting of a traditional Sami coffee gathering in their lavvu. What does love mean to you? Iran-American artist Hadieh Shafie’s 2021 colored-pencil statement piece titled Safar 1 explores this concept, encouraging viewers to reflect on loving themselves and others, falling in love, and mending heartbreak. Her entire Safar collection (meaning “travel” in Farsi) includes intricately crafted paper spirals with the word Eshgh,, meaning “love,” written upon them, rolled thousands of times before being secured. We, like Shafie, firmly believe Eshgh love will prevail over hate. This piece and work from eight other expatriate Iranian artists are on display as part of ART IRAN: Falling into Language, Language, an exhibit at the Craft Contemporary galleries in Los Angeles, through May 5, 2024.

I
n a sunken passenger lounge sumptuously carpeted in Benjamin Moore’s Chili Pepper red, sipping a whiskey sour below a bespoke, vintage Solari departures board designed in Italy, I’m waiting in style for Frank Sinatra to fly me to the moon.
But although I’m partying like it’s 1962 in Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center, which opened that year, I am an arrival rather than a departure in the new iteration of this iconic building, now meticulously transformed from an airline terminal into a multi-award-winning hotel like no other airport hostelry. With its soaring modernist curves, rooms overlooking the runway, and a Constellation parked outside offering a quirky alternative cocktail lounge that has won its own awards, the TWA Hotel is one of New York City’s newest attractions rather than a mere layover perch. It’s a time capsule to which fans of mid-century living flock to immerse themselves in an era when air travel was less stressful and a glamorous event to dress up for, like a visit to the theater. There are differences, of course. The planes that taxi beneath my bedroom window bear the livery of JetBlue, which burst into existence just as TWA went through its millennium death throes after more than seventy years of service. The airline emerged too soon to take over the terminal, which closed in December 2001. Still, JetBlue passengers on layover are among the most regular users of the hotel, which offers four-hour daytime and overnight stays.

reserving this architectural jewel by adding 512 hotel rooms and a whole slew of exhibits celebrating the 1960s lifestyle set to a mid-century soundtrack—everything from doo-wop to bossa nova—is a labor of love that deservedly won an AIA architecture prize for the challenging transformation.
“The iconic Chili Pepper red carpet was a key part of the TWA Flight Center’s original design, and we preserved it,” says Chris Betz, guest experience director at the TWA Hotel. “In the early ’60s, no one could have imagined rolling luggage over it!” Guests must navigate a fair stretch of the carpet to the guest wings via the long, white-walled flight tubes that once led to TWA planes. But the slight drag is worth it to tread those iconic ramps, which have since
played starring roles in the film Catch Me If You Can and Amazon Prime’s hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Many check into rooms like my own—small and functional, as most guests stay only one night. But a floor-to-ceiling runway view provides the wow factor. And there’s no lack of elegance in the design execution, as a few distinctive features of guest rooms include ribbed wood paneling handfinished by Amish artisans, angled desk lamps that field a 1960s vibe, and cut-glass ice buckets atop the mini-fridge. Amenities include souvenirs every guest must surely pocket with relish: tiny bottles of TWA-branded body lotion and a stack of logoadorned pencils. That iconic logo has been licensed for use throughout the hotel, beautifully reproduced in brass on the base of elevators. These lead to guest rooms and a delightful new addition: a rooftop with a heated outdoor pool that offers a dramatic vantage point from which to view the planes. The adjacent restaurant converts seasonally to a winter chalet serving hot toddies and other festive après-ski fare. 104 | F E BR UA R Y 2 0 24

The central dining spot is not original, but the Paris Café by Jean-Georges looks as it surely would have done sixty years ago had Saarinen thought to install pre-flight catering on a mezzanine platform. There are booths in dove gray, blush pink, and primrose yellow and dozens of Saarinen’s iconic tulip chairs, not to mention a long curving counter and yet another cocktail lounge. The main libation-dispensing spots are two elegant circular bars in the upper lobby above the semicircular lounge where TWA passengers awaited their departure beneath that iconic board. Its mirror image Solari board click-clacks real-time destination updates at the hotel entrance. As for those museum exhibits, the most engaging is the show of six decades of TWA crew uniforms by top designers of the times, including Jackie Kennedy’s favorite, Oleg Cassini, Pierre Balmain, Ralph Lauren, and the less well-remembered
Dalton, who dressed flight attendants in the bright colors and miniskirts beloved in the sixties. More challenging to find, unless you seek them out, are the 1962 living room faithfully recreated at the back of the flight tubes and a replica of Eero Saarinen’s design studio. Here, I learned the Finnish-born architect, who also designed the St. Louis Arch, first sketched his concept for the terminal on the back of a dinner napkin. Since he created it during an era of smaller planes, the terminal was almost obsolete at the time of opening in terms of how many passengers it could handle, a fact nearly as tragic as the fact Saarinen died a year before the opening of his masterwork, considered one of the most outstanding examples of mid-century modern design in the world.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission declared the terminal a landmark in 1995, and the Port Authority cemented its preservation by building a new JetBlue terminal behind it to shelter it in place. This set the scene for the hotel transformation. Beyer Blinder Belle Architects restored the original Flight Center, and female-led Lubrano Ciavarra worked magic on the two hotel wings with interior designers from Stonehill Taylor. guests usually get to see. (For example, the paper flight attendant uniforms, which barely survived a single dinner service!) My visit to JFK’s only on-site hotel, where astonishingly, considering the entertainment quotient, rooms start at only $250 ($159 for a four-hour stay), was a delightful place to recover from my transatlantic flight. The only disappointment was the food (the cocktails were perfectly constructed, as you would expect). Burgers and fries were nothing special, and there were no fine dining options, so good almonds and olives brought over to me from Connie, the cocktail bar in the Constellation, were the best things I ate during my stay. Avocado toast had made it onto a breakfast menu that was otherwise a throwback, including the horrible hotel coffee I’m

sorry to say I remember from early visits to the USA before the espresso takeover. But given that the TWA Hotel is essentially a period piece, I couldn’t help wondering if the weak coffee was an intentional reminder that staying here is essentially an invitation back to the future.

The Prisoner Ball last November offered an opulent, invitation-only evening celebrating the widely esteemed The Prisoner wines with panache. This inaugural ball featured celebrity guests and influencers ranging from Gabbriette Bechtel to Richie Shazam, finely curated delicacies, and funky beats spun by DJs Kristine Barilli and Claire Marie Astuc. Guests donned luxurious red and black ensembles and were decked head to toe in satin, velvets, and metallics while sipping The Prisoner’s signature blends. A New York City event for the ages, this fête radiated an unforgettable sense of opulence and mystique.
