THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE Home

A Walk Down Memory Lane

The seasons of life ebb and flow, and some are better than others, as we all know too well. It is a time of blessings in my life and those of my extended family members, and I am so grateful for that. It’s wedding season, and having my niece Meghan Ryan Asbury and her bridal party elegantly grace the cover of this issue warms my soul. If a photo is worth a thousand words, this one is worth ten thousand. The picturesque setting at Eden Gardens State Park in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, is exquisite, with the massive old oak trees cascading and framing the image with their wisdom and majesty. They played the backdrop for a real-life true love story. The love and warmth captured in this cover photo by Sydney Jeter are worthy of ushering in our Home & Design edition as she wed her intended, Lucas Asbury, on January 5, 2024. A reception followed at her parents’ home in Seagrove Beach, where Meghan grew up.

The family dubbed this as the “Father of the Bride wedding.” Meghan said she always wanted her wedding to be at their home, and she just needed to convince her parents—particularly her father, Jim Ryan, who worked tirelessly to make their home wedding-ready in just a few short months. Her beautiful mother, Renee, was the wedding planner, and together, they created a magical backyard wedding with memories to last a lifetime. Dancing, love, smiles, tears, and excitement were not dampened by the rain that fell under a storybook-worthy tent with lanterns that only made everything more magical. Family members on both sides traveled to the Asburys’ wedding, creating a beautiful reunion weekend and making it all the more joyous.

I did not know prior to seeing Meghan’s wedding story written by editor Jordan Staggs that Meghan wanted to have her wedding at Eden Gardens since she was four years old, when she was a precious flower girl in my wedding nearly twenty-eight years ago, along with her adorable cousin Amanda Crowley. My husband, Gerald, and I had our reception at Eden. The blessing of seeing Meghan walk down the aisle there, beaming with starstruck love in her eyes and radiating unabashed beauty, brought me to tears. That led me to look through my photo albums and take a long walk down memory lane to find a few photos from our wedding, which you see here. I would not be where I am without Meghan, who was born just before I ventured to Florida from Boston for a job interview with the town of Seaside. I thought the interview was a perfect opportunity to meet my niece—who looked like an adorable little Tweety Bird—and never dreamed I would accept the position and move here full-time. What a blessing it is to see children grow up and become all they can be. My parents (Meghan’s grandparents) would have loved to have been at another Ryan family celebration filled with dancing and laughter, but they were there in spirit and are so proud of you, Meghan.

It is a big year for Meghan, with a wedding, trips to Paris and the Dominican Republic, and celebrating her debut book, You Are Not Behind: Building a Life You Love Without Having Everything You Want. It is available for preorder on Amazon and will officially be published on September 10. Stay tuned to VIE Speaks: Conversations with Heart &

Soul podcast’s fourth season, when Meghan Asbury will be a guest on my podcast to discuss life, love, God, and her new book!

Meghan and Lucas, I pray you have so much fun and embark on many adventures together. May you love one another loudly and boldly so everyone can see the wonderful blessing your union is in the eyes of the Lord.

To LOVE,

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM PROJECT TO DESIGN AND WHY?

JOY HODGES

Interior Designer & Founder of Joy Hodges Designs @joyhodgesdesigns

My dream project would undoubtedly be designing a luxury ski/hunting lodge nestled in the heart of the mountains. I would love the challenge of a warm and inviting atmosphere adorned with animal skins and trophies complemented by organic, rich earth tones and an unexpected pop of vibrant color. This dream was fueled by a 2018 trip to market, where I saw some stunning animal art. I also love to snowboard and enjoy après-ski hot cocoa or a warm toddy by a wood-burning fire, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the trees enveloped with white snow. My son and business partner is an avid hunter. A ski/ hunting lodge offers the perfect canvas to blend all these elements where every detail tells a story.

Interior Designer, Product Designer & Author @natalieannettedesign

My dream project would be a boutique hotel. I love entertaining, and what would be a more fabulous way to curate the ultimate boutique hotel experience? The grand welcome in the foyer design would match the unsurpassed customer service and luxurious, unique, distinguished rooms. I can imagine my lifestyle brand products showcased throughout, from the café to the ballroom, with select delicacies in the gift shop. The “wow factor” would be iconic and fabulous, prompting guests to return for more enjoyable memories. This stirs my spirit as I type, thinking about the dynamic bar space and soothing, comfortable coffee nook where you can begin the day. I can’t wait—dream job, take me away!

Interior Designer & Founder of Lovelace Interiors @susan_lovelace_asid_ncidq

All the projects I have completed have been dream jobs because my clients were wonderful. Emeril’s Coastal restaurant was very rewarding—they are

family. I loved every idea Alden Lagasse voiced. She and Emeril are amazing talents and inspiring to work with. My current dream would be a beautiful horse farm on a gorgeous property with a lake. A well-budgeted, state-of-the-art barn would make my heart happy. The main house is majestic in my dreams, with views from every window. No detail would be left undone. The barn would be surrounded by lush green pastures. A covered arena with a guest house would be attached, including a chef’s kitchen, dining space, den, two bedrooms with en suite baths, and viewing areas inside and out to enjoy horse activities, dog sports, and other animals that make us happy. Wow, it sounds like a dream and would all be lovely. I would make sure of that!

Managing Partners at Chancey Design @chanceyinteriordesign | @chanceyarchitecture

Our dream project would be a European hotel, particularly in the South of France, which includes classical and modern building methods done in a sustainable fashion. Traveling throughout Europe, we see wonderful examples of historic architecture alongside harmonious additions. The foundation would be an extraordinary character of materials from generations of artists and craftsmen juxtaposed with the clean lines of modern-day architecture. Most notably, our boutique hotel would be designed with “unreasonable hospitality” in mind, embracing exceptional service and allowing staff to operate efficiently. To appease every guest’s desire, the designed environment must support the notion and empower the guest to relax and enjoy each experience. Suites would incorporate enough space for unpacking, abundant closets, and generous vanity counters. Comfortable, sustainable materials and technology-friendly lighting, electronics, and plumbing would be key design components.

Silent living is a concept that encourages authentic connection and a lifestyle of happiness and fulfillment. Silent Living Retreat Homes is headed by seasoned hospitality professional and hotelier Joäo Rodrigues and his family, who collectively transformed this property into their family home and graciously open its doors to guests each year. Santa Clara 1728 is one of five Silent Living homes throughout Portugal, located in the Old Cultural Quarter of Lisbon. Here, the magic is in the details. Limestone marble, called “Lioz” from the foothills of Sintra, pine wood floors, and handmade tiles were used in renovating this eighteenth-century property to pay homage to Lisbon’s oldest palaces, churches, and monuments. Every space fosters the fullness of the Portuguese lifestyle: expansive views of the city and river, food served at a central communal table, the spirit of family, meticulously handcrafted custom furniture, and the invitation to gather together while being fully present. Dare we say it’s a perfect honeymoon retreat?

MR. & MRS. ASBURY

28 | JUNE 2024 L’amour
THEY SAY THAT divine timing IS PERFECT, AND THIS BEAUTIFUL NEWLYWED COUPLE WOULD AGREE.

When Meghan Ryan and Lucas Asbury met in 2016, they were both leading a summer training trip for college students. “We hit it off instantly as friends, but we never lived in the same city,” shares Meghan. The pair remained in touch, though, and their friendship thrived even though Meghan lived in Charlotte and Lucas was in Nashville. By December 2022, however, Lucas revealed he had developed feelings for Meghan and had wanted to ask her out for almost a year. As you may have guessed, she agreed, and the rest is history.

“We had known each other so long as friends that when we finally went out, it was just really easy,” Meghan says. “We got married thirteen months and one day from our first date.”

The two continued to date long-distance while Lucas’s job as a construction project manager in Nashville’s medical industry and Meghan’s at Proverbs 31 Ministries in Charlotte—plus writing her own devotional book—kept them both busy. Still, Lucas joined Meghan for several trips to her hometown of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, to spend time with her family and friends. They say, “When you know, you know,” and it didn’t take long for them both to realize they were ready to take the next step on their journey through life together.

“While we were on a trip with some of my friends at the beach last summer, Lucas wanted to go to Black Bear Bread Co. in Seaside for breakfast,” Meghan recalls. “I didn’t think anything of it, and we went—just the two of us. I had no idea our friends were back at my parents’ house setting up a surprise party. After we ate, he suggested we take the ‘long way’ back to the car, and that’s when I knew what was happening. We walked back to the Watercolor trails, and I babbled the whole time because I was nervous and didn’t want to ruin whatever he had planned. He stopped me on the bridge and asked me to marry him. My best friend was in the woods nearby, photographing the whole thing. It was the best and most ‘us’ way for him to do it—in workout clothes, in one of our favorite places. And I had no idea it was happening!”

Meghan and Lucas celebrated their engagement at her childhood home and the nearby white-sand beach all day afterward, with many family and friends joining in the fun. The Florida sunlight, clear turquoise water of the Gulf, and gorgeous beaches are a draw for many destination weddings, and Meghan knew it was where she wanted to celebrate her nuptials, as well—at home with family and friends, old and new. So, plans formed for an elegant hometown wedding near the beach.

“Like most couples, there were some stressful points, mostly when it came to the guest list,” she admits. “But we tried to keep it as simple as possible. Our engagement was pretty short, so we had to move quickly, and we’re so glad we did. We planned it ourselves, but my mom, Renee, did most of the work to help us, and it turned out amazing!”

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 29

There are many stunning venues around the Gulf Coast area of Northwest Florida, but one in particular held a special place in the bride’s heart and became a clear winner.

“When I was four years old, I was the flower girl in my aunt Lisa Burwell’s wedding, and the reception was held at Eden Gardens,” Meghan shares. “I had dreamed of that since I was little.”

On January 5, 2024, Meghan and Lucas gathered with about 160 guests for a heartfelt ceremony underneath the live oaks and Spanish moss at Eden Gardens State Park on the Choctawhatchee Bay. The verdant lawn behind the historical Wesley House mansion, built in 1897, made a perfect setting for the bridal party adorned in varying shades of green, including Meghan’s sister, Abigail, as the maid of honor. Her brothers, Micah and Patrick, served as two of Lucas’s groomsmen. The simple yet elegant setup with lilies, baby’s breath, and other white blossoms lining the aisle allowed nature to be the decoration as Meghan and her father, Jim, walked toward Lucas and her future.

“It truly was a dream day,” says the bride. “Lucas got ready with all his friends and said he felt really relaxed the whole time. I got ready with my friends at my parents’ house while we watched them set up the backyard for the reception. It was fun and easygoing, and no one was in a rush for anything. We kept everything pretty simple to bring out the beauty of Eden.”

Meghan says her “first look” with Lucas was one of her favorite moments. “And our ceremony felt so worshipful and like a really holy moment,” she adds. After the “I dos,” the wedding party took photos while guests of the newlywed Asburys traveled a few miles back to the Ryans’ home in Seagrove Beach.

"WHEN I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD, I WAS THE FLOWER GIRL IN MY AUNT LISA BURWELL’S WEDDING, AND THE RECEPTION WAS HELD AT EDEN GARDENS. I HAD dreamed OF THAT SINCE I WAS LITTLE.”

“There were some restrictions with numbers that made it impossible to have the reception at Eden,” Meghan explains, “so I jokingly asked my dad if we could do it in the backyard, and he (somewhat reluctantly) agreed! He and my grandfather built our house, and it’s the most special place in the world to me. Getting to be there with our closest friends and family was the best. A real Father of the Bride moment!”

Lucas, a musician and songwriter, even took the stage several times to play with The Park Band, a popular cover band based in Alabama, which Meghan says was a huge hit. “We were obsessed with our band. The guests loved it, too—everyone was committed to the dance floor the whole night.”

32 | JUNE 2024

After a joyful evening, it was time for the Asburys to bid farewell to their family and guests and prepare for a tropical honeymoon in the Dominican Republic! They enjoyed a week at the Sanctuary Cap Cana in Punta Cana, which was full of relaxation, Caribbean views, great food, and lots of memories made together. “We wanted to sit by the pool and do nothing for a week, and it was the perfect spot to do that,” says the bride.

Cheers to Meghan and Lucas! May your journey together be full of love, family, God, and more unforgettable moments kicked off by a beautiful backyard wedding for the ages.

REMEMBER IN ROSEMARY BEACH 34 | JUNE 2024 L’amour
A DAY TO

IN THE CHARMING TOWN OF MCKINNEY, TEXAS, JOHN CARTER WIGGLESWORTH AND SIBLEY ASHTON TURRENTINE CROSSED PATHS EARLY IN LIFE AS THEIR MOTHERS, WHO ARE GREAT FRIENDS, BROUGHT THEM TO TENNIS MATCHES AND FAMILY EVENTS.

s their friendship blossomed into something more when they were young, their hometown became the backdrop to their adventures and shared dreams. Fastforward to April 13, 2024, a date etched in the sands of time as the day they would pledge their love amid the picturesque beauty of ROSEMARY BEACH®, Florida. With the sun casting its golden glow, John Carter and Sibley embarked on a new chapter of their journey, surrounded by 160 cherished guests who had witnessed their love story unfold.

Now, as they stand on the threshold of forever, John Carter and Sibley invite you to join them as they celebrate a love that has stood the test of time and blossomed into a lifelong romance. Theirs is a story of friendship, laughter, and love meant to be. We were so excited to catch up with the bride to hear the story in her own words.

OUR LOVE STORY

John Carter has played golf his entire life, and when my brother Sloan started getting into golf as a teenager, he and John Carter started hanging out on the golf course and soon became best friends. Sloan would come home and talk about this kid named “JC” and how great he was at golf. Of course, I was interested in meeting this so-called JC because he was my age, and my brother thought he was the coolest. It turns out he was the coolest, and after seeing me, he said it was love at first sight. We were twelve. He was my first-ever boyfriend, and I was his first-ever girlfriend.

We stayed that way through middle school and most of high school. Still, the iconic story of me breaking his sweet seventeen-year-old heart will never die. Little did everyone know that even when we broke up, we never stopped keeping in touch through the rest of high school and college. I came home for the summer before my senior year of college, and one night, my brother asked me to eat dinner with him at the clubhouse after he finished his round of golf. As I walked in, I saw John Carter sitting with my brother—he had set us up. We didn’t know we would see each other, but thank God we did. We started dating after a week of seeing each other again, stayed together long distance through the rest of college, and then both moved back to Dallas.

THE PROPOSAL

Let me start by saying John Carter cannot lie or hide anything from me to save his life! I received a text from John Carter’s mom one night that we were going to celebrate his Nana’s birthday at the RitzCarlton Hotel in Dallas. I did not believe that for a second. John Carter (bless his heart) had been up to something the two or three weeks before. He kept going on “errands” or “helping Nana move some furniture,” which I knew was code for ring shopping. The weekend of “Nana’s party,” we pulled up to the hotel, and he brought me to the front courtyard where he had set up the most beautiful yet simple proposal. He surprised me with an after-party with some of our closest friends and family. The whole story makes me laugh and smile; it was perfectly intimate, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

THE VENUE – FLORIDA’S ROSEMARY BEACH® COMMUNITY

My family has been going to Rosemary Beach for vacation since I was in middle school, and it has always been such a special place to us. My mom always said she wanted me to get married in Rosemary because it was the perfect fit, and it was! John Carter loved the idea, so it really was the only venue we looked at or even discussed.

OUR WEDDING PLANS

Planning our wedding was amazing! As an interior designer, I had a vision of what I wanted my wedding to look like, so it was exciting to make it come to life. John Carter took the backseat for most of the design planning, but he had a good time trying all the cake and food. My mom was a huge part of the entire process and helped both John Carter and me more than we could have ever imagined. My mom has always had an excellent aesthetic eye, so being able to bounce ideas off of her or listen to ideas she had made the entire experience even more meaningful.

DESIGNING THE BIG DAY

When it comes to design, I have never been a fan of setting myself in one category or putting myself in perimeters, so deciding on one accent color or theme never

felt right. I loved the idea of having the design complement who John Carter and I are. I wanted parts of the design to speak volumes (like myself) and others to be subtle but still classy and elegant (like John Carter). It was important to me that when guests were walking around, there were elements that stuck out and made them stop to appreciate them. On the flip side, I didn’t want the design to feel overwhelming or chaotic. Creating moments that were thoughtful and detailed was huge. I loved the touches of “something blue” within the florals and accessories. One of my favorite memories is the unique umbrella design next to the bar, which started from my mom’s ideas and grew to be a beautiful moment at the wedding. It was a day we’ll never forget, and our guests had a great time!

OUR HONEYMOON

We went to Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort in St. Lucia! We looked at many places, but once we found Sugar Beach, we couldn’t pass it up! It was very relaxing, which was precisely what we were looking for.

SPECIAL THANKS

Everyone was amazing! Lauren VanDame, our photographer, was incredible and caught every special moment we could have asked for. Sally with Florals by the Sea blew me away with her ability to make my vision come to life while adding her own spice to it! Sherri, our wedding planner, was the sweetest woman, and we were so blessed to have her help along the way. Lastly, Townsend Catering is hands-down the best. Guests are still telling me how good each dish was.

Thank you, and congratulations!

love in Bl oom

ate Unger, employed at a cherished floral shop in Birmingham, Alabama, found herself drawn to take a leisurely stroll along the Mountain Brook trails on a Monday afternoon. Serendipitously, Rob Gambrell, visiting his parents in Birmingham from Panama City, Florida, decided to walk with his parents’ dog that very same day. Fate intertwined their paths on the trails, and after bold gestures from both Kate and Rob, their enchanting love story unfolded.

Their journey led them to Florida, where they soon got married. VIE had the pleasure of catching up with Kate to uncover the full tale.

Our Love Story

As Rob and I crossed paths on the trail, he complimented me with a simple, “Hey, you look nice.” I couldn’t help but smile back and reply, “You look nice, too.” Our grins spoke volumes as we walked past each other, stealing glances back. At that moment, I felt a sense of divine intervention, recognizing Rob as the embodiment of the qualities I had long desired: boldness, masculinity, and quiet strength. Determined to explore this connection further, I decided to jog in his direction, hoping for another chance at conversation. When Rob saw me approaching, he wasted no time expressing his admiration, asking, “Hey, you’re really pretty. Can I get your number?” We were both drawn to each other, and from that moment, we knew it was something special.

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 39

The Proposal

Rob’s dedication knew no bounds; he drove nine hours round trip on a Sunday to take me out on a date and repeated the gesture the following weekend. He embodied everything I had ever hoped for in a partner—the man of my dreams, who pursued me in a way every woman deserves.

Our love flourished as we embraced new adventures together. In late November, I made the life-changing decision to move to Florida to be closer to Rob. We settled into a blissful routine, cherishing moments of sailing and family gatherings and deepening our understanding of each other.

On my birthday in August, Rob wrote me a heartfelt letter that brought tears to both of our eyes. With emotions overflowing, he asked me to marry him right there on the bay where we often watched the sunset together. Overwhelmed with happiness, I couldn’t stop crying and hugging Rob, feeling the happiest I had ever been.

Our Venue

Rob and I have always been at peace by water, so it felt natural to exchange our vows surrounded by the cathedral of God’s creation. With the waves echoing our joyous sentiment, we professed our love on the shore of Grayton Beach, Florida.

Our reception venue, Monet Monet, is also located in Grayton Beach. Monet Monet holds a special place in my heart, so it was the perfect place to host our reception. My mom used to read Linnea in Monet’s Garden to me as a young girl, and in 2019, my mom and I took a trip to Giverny, France, to see Monet’s Garden in real life. I absolutely love flowers, and it was one of the most special trips to see the pictures in that book come to life and to share this memory with my mom. I adore the beautiful gardens at Monet Monet. Every little detail and thoughtful element of the venue reflects the care and dedication of the people behind the scenes who pour out their love to make it so special for each couple.

Wedding Planning

Our wedding was planned in roughly three months, which presented quite a challenge in terms of organizing everything in such a short timeframe. However, I was incredibly fortunate to have the support and dedication of the team at Grayton Beach Catering. They wholeheartedly embraced the task, managing every detail with passion and precision. Thanks to their expertise and commitment, our wedding felt meticulously planned and executed, as if we had been preparing for a year. I was overwhelmed with awe when I witnessed how seamlessly everything came together on our wedding day.

“I still can’t believe how special this day was and how perfect every part was!”

Our Wedding Day

Our wedding day, set on a stunningly sunny November afternoon with perfect temperatures, couldn’t have been more picturesque. Being a lover of gardens (if you hadn’t guessed already), I envisioned our decor to reflect the charm of a European garden. Our wedding was the weekend before Thanksgiving with family and close friends, so I wanted it to feel cozy, with a family-style atmosphere. We opted for farm tables and a bonfire, fostering a happy celebration filled with laughter, community, and heartfelt conversations, all accompanied by the most delicious food imaginable!

There were many personalized touches at our wedding, each holding deep significance. For instance, my dad gave me a rope the day I left for college at The University of Georgia to represent that he was sending me off to become an independent woman. There was a red and black ribbon to represent my college, a purple ribbon to represent royalty, a white ribbon to symbolize purity, and a yellow ribbon to represent I could always come home. During my dad and I’s first look, I brought out the rope I had saved from my dorm room. We both cried, reflecting on our wonderful memories and knowing Rob is now my new home and safe place.

I cherished being my aunt and uncle’s flower girl years ago. As a surprise to both of them, I displayed my flower girl dress at our reception, along with a photo of us from their wedding day. It was such a meaningful moment with them as they stared at the dress in disbelief that I had saved it for so long.

I cried my eyes out as I walked down the aisle to be with the love of my life forever. I don’t think I’ve ever shed so many happy tears. Overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude to be Rob’s wife, I stood hugging him during our first dance, tears streaming down my face. He chuckled and said, “Kate, I think this is the part where we are actually supposed to dance!” So, in reality, Rob and I didn’t have a first dance; we had a first stand!

Our Honeymoon

We stayed at The Pearl in Rosemary Beach for our wedding night, and our stay was heavenly! We had the most beautiful view of the Gulf and were greeted by the kindest and most welcoming staff. They displayed the highest class and expressed such excitement for our new marriage.

We honeymooned in St. Thomas, seeking one last opportunity to enjoy warm weather before returning to colder temperatures. In a remarkable twist of fate orchestrated by God, one of my best friends, who couldn’t attend our wedding due to a family cruise, coincidentally passed through St. Thomas. As a result, we had the chance to snorkel with her family one day!

Our Wedding Vendors

Destin Mobile Makeup Box went above and beyond to ensure my comfort throughout the process. As someone who doesn’t typically wear much makeup, I appreciated their patience in guiding me through different looks. Additionally, Destin 30A Luxe Mobile Tan provided a flawless tan. Thanks to them, I felt and looked more beautiful than ever on my wedding day!

Our Greenhouse exceeded all expectations in bringing my floral vision to life with their exceptional talent. Drawing inspiration from our story of meeting on a walk, I envisioned a rose garden path for our vow exchange, symbolizing the beginning of our journey as husband and wife. Every detail of the floral design by Our Greenhouse was intentional, providing a beautiful array of carefully selected flowers to create a breathtaking garden atmosphere.

Our photographer, Elizabeth Laird, was absolutely incredible! Her work speaks for itself. I could not be happier or prouder of how she captured our joy on our wedding day. I still find myself staring at these photos, unable to believe I’m the one in them.

Justin Blocker of Decent Media is pure talent! He effortlessly captured our wedding video with a cinematic feel, exceeding all expectations. I’ve watched it countless times and am still in awe every single time!

Grayton Beach Catering was an absolute blessing throughout my wedding planning process. I’m immensely grateful for everything they did. And let’s talk about the food—wow! Countless guests approached me, expressing their delight at the incredible food served during our rehearsal dinner and wedding. We had an oyster boat (and oyster soup the night before), lightly fried fish (as a nod to my precious memories in Alaska with my family), and the most amazing cake by Bonne Vie Specialty that looked like a cashmere sweater. I still can’t believe how special this day was and how perfect every part was!

Thank you and congrats!!

Welcome to The Parlour! This effortlessly chic entrance to the Kips Bay Decorator Show Home in Palm Beach, Florida, is a testament that spaces can be functional and fun. Adorned with the finest details, including Sanderson and Harlequin woodland fabrics and wallpapers, a custom Rug & Kilim rug, and drapery from The Shade Store, the room’s elements were intentionally selected by interior designer Betsy Wentz and her team. Our favorite part of this space is the bar, utilizing feminine touches of pink to counter the natural depth and richness of the wooden detailing. Of course, we cannot overlook the elegant Cristallo Turquoise Quartzite countertop and backsplash from Prime Stone, which adds dimension through its beautiful veining pattern. The bar is complete with high-end JennAir appliances and a Kohler sink to round out the design. You can find us hanging in The Parlour next happy hour with a glass of rosé in hand!

“The star of the show is the bar!” shares Wentz. “I fell in love with this turquoise. It’s patterned, it’s colorful, it’s everything I would want in a stone, and it does a lot to draw the whole space together.”

44 | JUNE 2024 L’amour

It all began in 2018 when Mitch Corlett, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, made the leap to Nashville in search of new experiences. Little did he know, this decision would lead him to Renae Currey, a Nashville local with a magnetic personality.

heir first encounter, a casual coffee date in downtown Franklin, Tennessee, sparked a connection that quickly became unbreakable. As their relationship blossomed, they set off on a memorable trip to Joshua Tree in September 2020. Amid the stunning vistas of the national park, Mitch chose the perfect moment to propose, sealing their love among the natural beauty of the desert landscape.

“We wanted a wedding that was less traditional, more personal, and most importantly, fun!” shares Renae, owner of Love Salon 30A. With this in mind, they set out to create a celebration as unique as their love and shared the whole story with VIE

The Venue

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Grayton Beach, Florida, Renae and Mitch found the perfect setting for their union. With its pristine sands, crystal-clear Gulf, and unique coastal dune lake, Grayton Beach exuded a natural beauty that captured their hearts from the moment they laid eyes on it. The allure of the Western Lake outfall and the convenience of the Grayton Beach boardwalk provided an idyllic backdrop for their ceremony.

For Renae and Mitch, the wedding was more than just a ceremony. It was a celebration of love shared with their closest family and friends. With a guest list of about thirty, they envisioned an intimate affair that would reflect their laid-back style and joyful spirit as a couple. Planning every detail themselves, they infused the event with personal touches and heartfelt moments.

CANADIAN TUXEDOS AND FRINGE WERE ENCOURAGED, AND SEEING OUR GUESTS HAVE FUN WITH THEIR INTERPRETATIONS OF THE DRESS CODE WAS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY.

46 | JUNE 2024 L’amour

The Wedding Day

As the sun began to set on December 21, 2023, Renae and Mitch exchanged vows against the backdrop of Grayton Beach’s breathtaking scenery, surrounded by the love and support of their cherished guests.

The ceremony setup included a beach bonfire, and one of the couple’s favorite memories was having a few minutes to themselves after the ceremony to enjoy the sunset and bonfire, just the two of them. Meanwhile, guests enjoyed cocktail hour at the nearby Brink House.

Following the ceremony, the festivities continued at the Brink House, a private vacation rental in Grayton Beach, where the couple hosted a reception that felt more like a lively gathering among friends than a traditional wedding. This is love the second time around for both Renae and Mitch, so they opted for a fun theme of “This ain’t our first rodeo.” Guests arrived in “coastal cowgirl” and “beach cowboy” attire, adding a playful touch to the celebration. “Canadian tuxedos and fringe were encouraged, and seeing our guests have fun with their interpretations of the dress code was one of the highlights of the day,” the bride recounts.

Instead of saving for a honeymoon, the couple is building their dream house in Point Washington State Forest. For them, this home is more than a place to live—it embodies love and commitment, their forever honeymoon. Thank you, and congrats!

LOVELACE INTERIORS Has Been MAKING HOMES BEAUTIFUL for 29 YEARS STRONG

WAY CLASS ACT A the LEADS

50 | JUNE 2024 La maison

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUNTER BURGTORF

Astoried career spanning nearly three decades has fostered a reputation for exquisite interior design, with projects across Dallas, Aspen, New Orleans, and the gorgeous Gulf Coast of Florida. Headquartered in what can only be described as an architectural hamlet unlike any other, Susan Lovelace and her eponymous business, Lovelace Interiors, are based in Inlet Beach, Florida, near the notable New Urbanism communities of Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, Seaside, and more. Her legacy as a trailblazer, businesswoman, mentor, leader, and consummate professional is to her credit as she continues to build her brand in the area and beyond.

I’ve known Susan since before she opened the doors of her first showroom in Miramar Beach, Florida, in 1995. It was housed in an expansive two-story building designed by architect Jeff Prescott in a style you could describe as emulating the New Orleans French Quarter. This history of friendship and as colleagues gives me a bird’s-eye view into Susan’s remarkable career. None of us escape the ebb and flow of life’s ups and downs, and she is no exception; still, with the grace, dignity, and fortitude that are her hallmarks, this stalwart has courageously braved and won her battle against breast cancer, raised a blended family of six handsome and successful men, and sadly said farewell to the love of her life three years ago when her husband passed away from a long battle with cancer. Dewitt “Sparky” Lovelace was her cheerleader, confidante, partner in life and business, and a true Southern gentleman. Since this happened during COVID-19, very few could properly say their goodbyes to this remarkable man. Through it all, Susan has faced life head-on and with supernatural strength. She faced grief and began healing, and now,

as she enters a new chapter in her life, she makes it all look easy—a testament to her courage, class, and unabashed love of having fun.

Through Lovelace Interiors, Susan aims to support and elevate her employees to carry on her legacy of good character, talent, skill, and work ethic. Enter the licensed interior designers Lindsay Cannon and Karen Sinclair Kerns, who have worked for Susan for several years and designed this fabulous home on the Gulf of Mexico in Alys Beach. The homeowners have worked with Susan on several projects since 2015. Under her tutelage, the dream team of Lindsay and Karen redesigned the interiors of this masterpiece that anyone would love to call home.

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 51

his house is a real architectural showpiece,” says Lindsay. “We were given the fun job of enhancing the architectural elements by bringing the exterior colors inside. Our clients love pops of bright and bold color, so we incorporated this concept throughout.”

One thing that sets this home apart is the use of custom bedding, furniture, and draperies sourced through the vendors at Lovelace Interiors. “Our clients wanted things outside the normal ‘Alys Beach box,’” Lindsay explains, “so we used our creativity to develop a cohesive design concept.”

Some of the Lovelace team’s favorite manufacturers found throughout the project include Ambella Home, Bernhardt, and Vanguard upholstery lines, which Karen says the clients fell in love with when Lovelace Interiors selected them for their previous projects. Many custom pieces and special furniture and decor also set the tone for the serene beach retreat with a contemporary twist. Pieces from Modern History, John Richard, Regina Andrews,

Visual Comfort, and many others grace its rooms, along with custom bedding, pillows, and draperies. “We used materials from Fabricut, Clarke & Clarke, Zinc, Osborne & Little, Stout, and Romo, along with bedding from Ann Gish and Eastern Accents,” says Karen.

When Susan and Lindsay worked with these clients on a new construction home in Watersound Beach in 2015, little did they know they would be setting the stage for this masterpiece on the Gulf nearly a decade later. “We defined every interior element of that Watersound home, from stair railings to custom furniture, lighting, draperies, and final accessories,” Lindsay recalls. “It was a home that reflected their lives and personalities. We grew to know their tastes and preferences. When they unexpectedly sold it, they contacted us to help with additional properties in Rosemary Beach and Fairhope, Alabama, over the years. We were so excited to work on this Alys Beach property with them and help them to make this house their perfect vacation home.”

“T
“Our clients wanted things outside the normal ‘Alys Beach box,’ so we used our creativity to develop a cohesive design concept.”

Karen says she and Lindsay were immediately drawn to the breathtaking architecture and views of the Gulf when they first walked the property. The home was designed by Khoury Vogt Architects, helmed by Marieanne Khoury-Vogt and Erik Vogt, the Town Architects of Alys Beach. In partnership with Hufham Farris Construction, KVA created a gorgeous landmark house just steps from the beach, the Gulf Green, and the Beach Club at Alys Beach. Architectural millwork details by E. F. San Juan create focal points around the home, such as the incredible ipe wood columns and archways that frame the view from the second-floor deck and great room. Loewen Lift and Slide doors, also supplied by E. F. San Juan, offer the owners a genuine indoor-outdoor living experience as they can embrace the beauty of the landscape and horizon. The team at Lovelace Interiors wanted to reflect the bountiful scenery while creating some fun moments inside the home.

“We were taken aback by the architectural details, incredible views, and open space plan,” Karen says. “The home had so much potential, and we couldn’t wait to start. Our client’s love for color allowed us to curate a design that stepped away from the typical monochromatic beach color palette. The amount of natural light enabled us to bring in rich yet tranquil materials and art that would accentuate the space without feeling too dramatic.”

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 53

She continues, “We fell in love with the Modern History dining table and knew we had to use it in the great room. It turned out to be such a beautiful statement, especially when set with the Annieglass tableware. The Windy O’Connor pillows on the center settee were so colorful and fun. All the walls had floor-to-ceiling windows, leaving little space to hang anything, so we loved how the pillows felt like artwork. The main sitting area had our client’s favorite Ambella Home upholstery and a custom acrylic-leg ottoman that was perfect for the space.”

Of course, there are a few places to hang art, and Karen and Lindsay were particularly excited to commission local artist Allison Wickey to create a piece that now hangs above the guest bed. “She incorporated all the colors from the bedding and hanging light fixtures seamlessly,” says Karen.

54 | JUNE 2024 La maison
“No detail was spared in furnishing and decorating this one-of-a-kind retreat.”

Lindsay expounds on the light fixtures throughout the house, saying, “The lighting elements set the tone for this home. They are minimalistic, spotlighting the architectural elements without taking away from their beauty.”

Karen adds, “We wanted to procure the perfect light fixtures that would create a harmonious ambience and emphasize the unique ceiling details by KVA. At night, they capture the subtle nuances of light and shadow.”

No detail was spared in furnishing and decorating this one-of-a-kind retreat, from the luxurious third-floor master suite to the ground-floor guest bed and plunge pool area. The home includes a bunk room, two more guest bedrooms, a TV room and wet bar, and a bright hallway lounge, among many other thoughtful spaces tucked into a relatively narrow footprint and expertly configured by the architectural team.

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 55

Lindsay, Karen, and Susan all agree that it was a thrill to work with their longtime clients and friends to make this home feel like it suits their personality and lifestyle. “When you work with clients on multiple projects, you not only get to know their design style but how they use the home on a personal level,” Lindsay explains. “You are able to create nooks and spaces that cater to the family’s needs.”

Spending the day photographing this home overlooking gorgeous views for miles around, I couldn’t help but admire the artistry and craftsmanship by E. F. San Juan, with their white oak interior doors gracing nearly every room and ipe elements adorning the exterior like jewelry. Marveling at the creativity and talent of Khoury Vogt Architects, Hufham Farris Construction, and all those who define the Alys Beach townscape is nothing short of amazing. Then, seeing the newly imagined interiors brought forth by the Lovelace team created a moment when I paused and reflected on how blessed we are to call this area home. Seeing the community of Alys Beach, master-planned by DPZ CoDesign, who put the town of Seaside on the map where the New Urbanism movement was birthed, is something not many people get to see. Those of us who are fortunate to live and work in this area can see the evolution of ideas turned into reality, thanks to stewards of excellence in all facets of placemaking. This was a very good day.

Coast Furniture, known as the largest in-stock furniture dealer in Northwest Florida, has made a name for itself as a reliable destination for quality home furnishings.

The store offers a broad selection of pieces from well-known brands like Rowe, Hooker, Bernhardt, ART, and Uttermost, among others. In fact, it is the largest known Rowe Furniture dealer on the Gulf Coast. The VIE team recently toured the expansive showroom and caught up with co-owner Sam Miller to find out what makes Coast Furniture unique.

“We work hard to stay on trend with the latest styles in home furnishings,” Miller explains. “Many of our upholstered items—like sectionals, sofas, and sleeper sofas—are made in America, which is a big deal for us because it ensures quality, comfort, and reliable customer service.”

We asked Sam a few questions to get to know him and the business better.

VIE: How did you get started in the furniture industry?

Sam Miller: I was born and raised here in Destin and initially started in the consignment furniture business. Over time, I transitioned into new home furnishings. In 2020, my brother, Justin Miller, and I decided to launch Coast Furniture, not realizing the pandemic was just around the corner. Fortunately, we had ordered all the furniture to stock our store before everything shut down, so we were in a great position when the pandemic hit. We were lucky to have plenty of inventory during that challenging time. We’re grateful for the success we’ve achieved in our hometown and the support we’ve received from our community.

VIE: Describe the Coast Furniture showroom in three words.

SM: Quality, Trending, Value

VIE: What design trends have you noticed becoming increasingly popular?

SM: We have noticed a growing preference for clean lines and a slightly more contemporary aesthetic. While muted colors continue to be a staple here on the Gulf Coast, we’ve also seen a noticeable shift toward warmer tones with a mix of natural woods.

VIE: Are there any styles or aesthetics that tend to sell particularly well?

SM: Rowe is our top-selling upholstery brand, and we’ve seen tremendous success with their performance fabrics, especially Crypton Home Nomad Snow. Natural woods and bleached teak have also become increasingly popular among our customers.

VIE: You offer free in-home design services. How does this work?

SM: Yes, we offer free design services to all our clients. When you are ready to purchase furniture

for your new home or investment property, we visit your home to assist with measurements, furniture and decor placement, and color selections that best suit your spaces.

VIE: How quickly can a customer receive a piece of furniture after purchasing from Coast Furniture?

SM: We pride ourselves in having a vast in-stock inventory we can deliver the next day or sometimes the same day.

VIE: Managing the largest in-stock furniture dealer in Northwest Florida must come with its challenges. What strategies do you employ to ensure efficient operations and customer satisfaction?

SM: We aim to provide the best customer service on the Gulf Coast. These days, customer service can seem like a thing of the past with all the automated responses and people passing you off to someone else. At Coast Furniture, we focus on making every client happy. I personally address any issues that may come up. Customer satisfaction isn’t just our goal; it’s our passion.

VIE: What is your number one piece of advice for people looking to furnish or refurnish their homes?

60 | JUNE 2024 La maison

We work hard to stay on trend with the latest styles in home furnishings.

SM: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Our trained design consultants can take your project from start to finish or offer guidance where you need it most with our complimentary design services. Their support can make a huge difference when furnishing your space.

VIE: What excites you most about the future of Coast Furniture?

SM: Our hometown is growing rapidly, which allows us to help more and more people create their dream homes. It’s not just a family business for us; it’s something we truly believe in.

o live both easefully and beautifully requires a space that simultaneously appeals to aesthetics and functionality. Joy Hodges, an interior designer based in Pensacola, Florida, possesses this innate gift for elevating otherwise ordinary or overlooked spaces.

Hodges’s passion for curating intentional living spaces began as young as age three. She recalls excitedly organizing her dresser drawers and rearranging her childhood bedroom in her spare time. Her grandmother was another immediate source of inspiration, skillfully sewing intricate designs made from the most luxurious fabrics. Although Hodges initially dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, life would later call her to adorn the interiors of bespoke homes along Florida’s Emerald Coast.

odges established her company, Joy Hodges Designs, in 1994, expanding her creative offerings while raising her three children. “I dabbled in various design projects, from consulting to painting murals and faux finishes and crafting floral arrangements for weddings. In 2009, my husband and I ventured into flipping houses, a collaboration that evolved into a family endeavor with my son, Bran Gross, a master carpenter. Together, we breathed new life into homes, infusing them with my design expertise and his construction prowess. In 2018, our partnership expanded as we ventured into building spec houses, a venture that demanded precise planning and design,” Hodges shares. “While I hadn’t anticipated further expansion, fate intervened when an architect in town recognized my talent and offered me a significant commercial project. This opportunity propelled me to delve deeper into transformative projects alongside my son as we continue to elevate spaces through renovations and spec home construction.”

Hodges describes her style as bold, expressive, and timeless—three elements in every aspect of her work.

“Each project I undertake at Joy Hodges Designs is infused with a sense of boldness, whether through striking color choices, innovative design elements, or daring artistic expressions,” she explains. “Yet, amid this boldness, there’s always an underlying sense of timelessness, ensuring that each space remains relevant and captivating for years to come.”

In addition to her refined taste, what sets Hodges apart from other designers is her extensive background in home renovations and interior design, cumulating over thirty years of industry experience. “With my son as my trusted partner in construction and master carpenter, I have a remarkable advantage when it comes to bringing design visions to life,” she continues. “Whether it’s renovating an existing space or starting from scratch, I have the expertise and creativity to turn ideas into reality. Perfecting how to integrate design and construction knowledge seamlessly allows me to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, structurally sound, and functional. This unique combination defines the essence of Joy Hodges Designs and sets me apart in the industry.”

Despite having many successful projects under her belt, Hodges continues to push the boundaries of traditional design. She firmly believes in thinking outside the box and continues to challenge herself with every creative endeavor. “Each project is like a blank canvas, and I approach it with the intention of reflecting the unique individuality of my clients,” she says. “So, while I have some guidelines, I’m always open to letting the creative process unfold naturally

and allowing the design to flow organically with each project. Over the years, I’ve learned to balance boldness with subtlety, recognizing that each client’s preferences and lifestyle are unique. My design philosophy has evolved to prioritize aesthetic appeal, functionality, and emotional response, creating spaces that are not just visually stunning but also deeply meaningful and reflective of my clients’ individuality.”

This feeling of genuinely feeling at home drives Hodges’s desire to create meaningful spaces. “For me, a house becomes a home when it evokes a sense of neuroaesthetics, sparking emotion and a sensory experience,” she expresses. “It’s about creating an environment of peace and tranquility, where every corner tells a story, and every detail elicits a feeling of comfort and belonging. To ensure functionality, I delve deep into understanding how my clients live in their spaces. From their daily habits to the dynamics of their family life, I gather insights that inform every design decision. I carefully source furniture that looks beautiful and feels comfortable and practical, drawing each space to scale to ensure the perfect balance of form and function.”

“As for the beauty of a space, it's a collaborative journey fueled by inspiration. Whether drawn from nature, art, color, texture, or a cherished piece of furniture, every element is carefully curated to reflect my client's unique vision and personality. By infusing each space with inspiration and creativity, I strive to create environments that transcend mere aesthetics, becoming a true reflection of the family who inhabits them.”

She continues, “As for the beauty of a space, it’s a collaborative journey fueled by inspiration. Whether drawn from nature, art, color, texture, or a cherished piece of furniture, every element is carefully curated to reflect each client’s unique vision and personality. By infusing each space with inspiration and creativity, I strive to create environments that transcend mere aesthetics, becoming a true reflection of the family who inhabits them.”

Hodges gives us an exclusive look into one of her most recent projects: her personal residence, a private waterfront abode in Pensacola. She describes the home’s personality as charming, feminine, and elegant. “Every detail is delicately curated to create a serene and inviting atmosphere,” Hodges shares. “A subtle palette of soft hues, including hints of pink, adds a touch of warmth and grace to the space, inviting you to embrace tranquility as soon as you step through the door. It’s a place where sophistication meets comfort, where every corner whispers of refined beauty and effortless charm.”

The entire design process was filled with many challenging moments, as any artist encounters when creating a project from the heart with fine attention to detail. “My biggest lesson was using too many 4000K downlight features,” Hodges recalls. “And my biggest challenge was convincing everyone that the stair rails and brick needed to be painted white!”

Still, she says, “The most rewarding part of the project, without a doubt, was seeing my vision come to life—especially when it involves collaboration with my son and business partner. Witnessing him build the cabinetry and furniture, from the

intricate cubbies by the elevator to the meticulously hand-carved bathroom from pecky cypress, fills me with immense pride. Every piece tells a story, from the butter-smooth dining table to the consoles crafted from leftover cypress exterior stair material and the magnificent bunk beds in the kids’ room. It’s not just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about sharing these moments of creation and seeing our shared vision materialize into something truly spectacular.”

When asked about her favorite space in the home, Hodges immediately shares her love for the “hers” bathroom and closet. “I placed a stunning Ro Sham Beaux chandelier over a luxurious tub centered in the middle of the bathroom, which casts a soft glow over the water. To add a touch of coziness, I included a fireplace, perfect for long, relaxing baths. But the closet—oh, it’s a dream! With a ten-foot wall of shoe storage and plush, high-pile white carpeting, this space feels like you’ve entered your own slice of heaven.”

odges offers three pieces of advice for creating memorable, statement-making living spaces in your home. “First and foremost, a cozy conversation seating area is a must—a place where family and friends can gather and connect. Secondly, I believe in the power of pillows and throws to add style and comfort to a space, so I always make sure there are plenty of decorative pillows and throw blankets on hand. Last but certainly not least, a large island serves as the heart of the home, providing not only utility but also a central gathering spot for loved ones to come together. These elements create a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes a house feel like home.”

What’s next for Hodges and her team? “We have two exciting ventures in the pipeline,” she shares. “Firstly, we’re working on my son’s personal home, a project that’s close to my heart and is currently under construction, set to be completed by early summer. We’re also embarking on a spec house project in early April. Both houses are situated on narrow lots, so we’re embracing a shotgun-style layout with garage apartments, promising to bring a unique touch to each space.”

A twenty-eight-foot custom rug by Retorra welcomes you, leading to an inviting sofa from Kravet’s Nadia Watts Gem Collection, an ideal spot for conversations over a glass of bubbly.

“I drew inspiration from the stunning Tiffany Studios Glass,” shares Watts. “The use of color comes naturally to me as my great-great-grandfather was Louis Comfort Tiffany. I hope this room brings you joy, just as it does for me!” Her lineage inspired her to create custom pieces that pay homage to iconic classics from the Tiffany Archives. Look at the medallions, modeled after a classic oval brooch, adding soft curves and movement to the otherwise linear room. INTERVIEW

OF 30A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Areal creative is always looking for the next opportunity, and that’s exactly what landscape architect Alan Holt keeps at the top of his mind in his career. He has spent over twenty-four years building relationships with some of the top architects and builders in Northwest Florida and beyond through his firm, 30A Landscape Architect, named for the eighteen-mile stretch of Scenic Highway 30-A that

runs parallel to the area’s white-sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. His portfolio spans everything from yard design to decks, patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and more, with his work highlighting the beauty of the area’s most coveted communities, including Alys Beach, Seaside, and Watersound Camp Creek, to name a few.

“I really feel blessed to have found a career I enjoy so much and which gives me such satisfaction,” Holt shares. “Growing up in this area and being able to contribute to the design of so many iconic areas along 30-A has made for a fantastic career that I hope to continue for many years.”

VIE touched base with Holt for this design-focused issue to share his thoughts and processes for creating outstanding landscape design and how homeowners, architects, and builders can consider upgrading their outdoor spaces.

VIE : As a landscape architect, what is the first thing you look at when you receive a new project? What is the driving force behind your designs?

Alan Holt: The driving force behind the designs begins with the available space. Many of the communities in Walton County, Florida, have setbacks that, at first appearance, give the impression of a spacious yard. The setbacks limit what can be built and where. Once we determine the limitations, we can determine the opportunities. A plunge pool, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, and seating can all fit comfortably within a small space. The next major consideration is the homeowner’s desire for the space and how they want to use it. Considerations are different for a family with young children than for empty nesters wanting a relaxing space to practice yoga. The architecture of the house is the third consideration. The material selection that complements the home is different in Alys Beach than in Seaside. The natural landscape in Northwest Florida has such an influence on the designs; it is interwoven in every project. A design may incorporate lush, tropical plants in a protected garden but then transition and blend with the surrounding native landscape.

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 71

VIE : What’s your design process like? Do you have a list of things you must include, or is each project more organic?

AH: There is a mental checklist developed from thirty-three years of experience, but it really goes back to what I learned at the University of Georgia in the Landscape Architecture program. Site analysis, conceptual design, and design development all go through my head in a rapid-fire sequence. Various design solutions are proposed and rejected in my head, on trace paper, or in quick computer models, depending on the project. Once a basic design idea develops, color, texture, repetition, and other elements of a good design are incorporated. While each project and client is unique, the process of a good design remains the same.

VIE: Working in prestigious communities such as Alys Beach and others along Scenic Highway 30-A, how do you operate within their codes while being creative?

AH: Working within the tight confines of a planter box at Alys Beach still allows opportunities for creativity. The plant palette on the shady north side of a house is different from the sunny south. Subtle colors and textures of green horsetail, blue agave, or even Blue Pacific shore juniper stand out against the stark white canvas of the Alys Beach stucco walls and can make a bold statement with a few simple plants. On the other hand, the spacious lots in Camp Creek allow for large lawns, multiple outdoor rooms, and other creative spaces.

VIE: How do you keep your plans fresh and unique for each home? Are you ever inspired by other designers, art, nature, or music?

AH: Ideas are limitless. Clients have asked a few times, “Have you ever proposed a design solution like this before?” And my answer is generally, “No, that’s why you hired me—for a unique design.” There are certainly great designers and landscape architects out there worthy of emulation. I have been influenced by iconic designers like Roberto Burle Marx and his bold patterns on Avenida Atlantica, but I generally try to propose unique designs for each client and space. I have tried a few times to incorporate a Mondrian pattern, but it felt forced. Certainly, nature is an inspiration, and any opportunity for borrowed views of the Florida State Parks or dune lakes is welcome and incorporated. My musical taste is a bit eclectic, to put it mildly, so who knows when Mozart or Moby may influence my designs?

VIE: Do you typically work on a project from the beginning with an architect and builder or come in after the home’s plans are finalized?

AH: Both, but we prefer to be involved from the start. If we come in at the beginning of a project, things like distant views, sunrise, sunset, and prevailing breezes can all be incorporated into the design and placement of the home. When the landscape architect is brought in at the end of the design process, things have been decided, and the best we can do is work with what we have or suggest minor changes that improve the project.

72 | JUNE 2024 La maison
“IDEAS ARE LIMITLESS. CLIENTS HAVE ASKED A FEW TIMES, ‘HAVE YOU EVER PROPOSED A DESIGN SOLUTION LIKE THIS BEFORE?’ AND MY ANSWER IS GENERALLY , ‘ No, that’s why you hired me-for a unique design. ’”

VIE : What are some things designers or homeowners are looking for in their residences lately? What do you think people should avoid?

AH: Plunge pools are still in high demand. The dense development that makes a community walkable means yards are smaller, but there is still an opportunity for a private pool where you can soak and relax, or the kids can play on a red flag day. Outdoor kitchens and dining spaces are great ways to extend your home and create more living space. Avoid forcing too many elements into a small yard, making it feel even smaller.

VIE : Regarding landscape maintenance, what is a good rule of thumb for homeowners to remember when they should refresh their landscaping, or how can they work with you to keep it healthy and beautiful?

AH: Durable, timeless materials such as brick, marble, and pre-cast concrete pavers will last for generations. Choosing plants that are native or well-adapted to our climate’s vagaries will provide a landscape that can be enjoyed in all seasons for many years to come.

VIE : How do you combine design with nature using planters, sculptures, installations, trellises, porches, pools, decks, and more?

AH: Combining design with nature is as easy as looking at the existing landscape around us. Using durable materials that stand the test of time and incorporating plants that complement the hardscape can blend the manufactured with the natural. Softening the hard corners of a pool or deck with palms or ferns will make the transitions feel less stark and artificial.

VIE : Thank you, Alan!

EXPLORE TREASURES IN RESORT RESALE

Resort Resale in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, offers consignmentbased retail of furniture, art, home decor, and more so customers can embrace the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset regarding their home or investment property.

INTERVIEW BY MCKENNA MEARS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUNTER BURGTORF
74 | JUNE 2024

RESORT RESALE ISN’T JUST ABOUT SHOPPING; IT’S A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY WHERE STYLE MEETS SUSTAINABILITY.

It’s a curated selection of high-end furnishings, art, and decor at accessible prices. Each piece is handpicked with a discerning eye for quality and design, ensuring only the finest finds grace their shelves. Through a seamless process, Resort Resale facilitates the transition of pre-loved items so each piece finds its perfect new home.

Fresh from a rewarding visit to Resort Resale, VIE spoke with entrepreneur, mother, and Resort Resale owner Jill Tanner to uncover the inspiration behind this design haven, explore emerging trends, and glimpse into the future of sustainable luxury.

VIE : TELL US ABOUT RESORT RESALE. HOW DOES IT WORK?

JILL TANNER: There are two sides to our business: customers and consignors. Customers shop at our store, where they can browse and purchase gently used highend pieces at typically around half of what retail prices would be.

Prospective consignors reach out to us by sending photos via text of the items they’re looking to sell. Given the high volume of inquiries we receive—sometimes exceeding thirty offers a day—we take great care in evaluating each submission. Not every item makes it into our inventory; we maintain a discerning eye, initially considering factors such as style and market demand. Subsequently, we assess the condition of the items. Only those in excellent shape make the cut. Our commitment lies in providing our customers with quality, well-maintained furniture. Often, our inventory includes brand-new pieces previously used for staging.

VIE : YOU ALSO WORK IN MARKETING. HOW DID YOU COME TO OWN RESORT RESALE, AND WHAT INSPIRED ITS CONCEPT?

JT: My husband, Mark, and I established a marketing and design agency, Clutch Media Works, in 2014 and continue handling marketing, websites, and graphic design services for our clients. Among our clientele was Resort Resale, and during a conversation with the previous owner, we discovered she was looking to sell the business. After much discussion, Mark and I decided that acquiring Resort Resale aligned perfectly with our vision.

The decision was motivated by more than just business; it was about pursuing something tangible after years behind a desk. Resort Resale, founded in 2008 by locals Ray and Vickie Dollar, had already established itself as a beloved establishment in the community. Their dedication laid a solid foundation for a thriving enterprise that filled a crucial niche in the area. It changed hands once more before coming to us.

An art-glass surfboard by local artist Mary Hong is among the treasures found at Resort Resale.

VIE : WHAT DESIGN TRENDS HAVE YOU NOTICED BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR?

JT: Bold lighting, statement decor, and, best of all, color! No longer are we in a sea of gray and white. People are looking for dramatic, unique pieces that bring life to their homes. We have noticed a rise in the popularity of rich, dark fabrics, complemented by luxurious gold accents and materials such as concrete, walnut, burlwood, and rosewood. Seeing the resurgence of dramatic elements in home design fills us with excitement. The bland, coastal design era is receding, making way for a refreshing shift in tastes and preferences.

VIE : ARE THERE ANY STYLES OR AESTHETICS THAT TEND TO SELL PARTICULARLY WELL?

JT: It’s really across the board. This area of the Florida Panhandle caters to full-time residents and visitors. For those furnishing their primary residences, the demand leans toward bold and dramatic pieces. However, given the prevalence of rental properties in the area, there’s a significant need for durable, highquality furniture. Slipcovered sofas, known for their ease of maintenance, particularly resonate with the rental market, offering practicality without compromising on style.

SEEING

THE RESURGENCE OF

IN HOME DESIGN FILLS US WITH EXCITEMENT.
76 | JUNE 2024 La maison

VIE : HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE CURRENT DESIGN TRENDS INTO THE ITEMS YOU OFFER FOR RESALE?

JT: When an offer comes in, we know pretty quickly if it’s something we can sell. We have a keen understanding of market demands and are well aware of items that have historically struggled to sell, leading to donations. Consequently, we prioritize accepting only those items with strong resale potential, aligning with what our customers seek.

VIE : HOW CAN OUR READERS BECOME SHOPPERS AND CONSIGNORS?

JT: The best way to shop is to browse our store in person. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can also stay updated with our latest arrivals and offerings through our active presence on Facebook and Instagram. We frequently do live walkarounds, showcasing our newest additions and giving you a firsthand look at what’s in store.

For consignors, the process is simple. Just text photos of your items to (850) 225-7578, and we’ll promptly assess them for suitability. Once approved, we offer a complimentary pickup service. Your items will then undergo thorough research, be priced at approximately half their retail value, and be listed for sale. Upon a successful sale, we operate on a 50/50 split with our consignors.

VIE : HOW DO YOU JUGGLE BEING A MOM AND WORKING TWO JOBS?

COULD YOU GIVE US TIPS ON YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT PROWESS?

JT: Ha! I’m just like everyone else—“busy.” It’s a phrase I hear echoed daily, especially among working parents. Regardless of their job situation, it is a constant refrain from all my friends. As parents, we inherently juggle multiple responsibilities, striving to provide for our families while cherishing quality time with our children.

Whether Mark and I were working a single job or managing four businesses, I believe we’d still find ourselves caught up in the whirlwind of busyness. We pride ourselves on our proactive approach; we tackle tasks as they arise, ensuring we stay ahead of the game. I’ve always believed in the mantra, “If you do it today, you don’t have to worry about it tomorrow.”

Our daughter loves visiting the store, and I can envision her joining us in the business one day. I firmly

believe that all children should have experience working in a service-oriented field, be it retail or hospitality. It instills valuable lessons in empathy, communication, and teamwork that are indispensable in any walk of life.

VIE : WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST UNEXPECTED SURPRISE WHEN VENTURING OUT AS OWNER OF RESORT RESALE?

JT: Discovering a passion for design and employing a team we truly care about! Our team isn’t just a group of employees; they’re like family to us, and we treat them as such.

We all enjoy coming to work, collaborating on styling the store, and assisting our customers in finding those one-of-a-kind pieces that speak to their hearts. Helping others discover items they can’t imagine living without brings us immense joy and fulfillment.

VIE : WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE FUTURE OF RESORT RESALE?

JT: Expansion. We’re currently exploring opportunities to venture into neighboring markets, with the potential for even further expansion beyond that. The appeal of our concept continues to grow, especially as more individuals embrace the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

An Architectural Team with Panache

Photography courtesy of PKA Architecture

or the robust design team at PKA Architecture based in Minneapolis, every project is an opportunity to explore and find new solutions and new ideas. With a goal of creating a natural environment that feels comfortable for every client, PKA comprises about thirty architects and other professionals who love using the story of clients’ lives and their desires for optimal living to design a home that “is better than they could have imagined, yet perfect for them.”

VIE was thrilled to catch up with the team at PKA, including principals Gabriel Keller and Kristine Anderson and associate principals Andrew Edwins and Ryan Fish, to learn more about their design philosophy and some of their outstanding, award-winning projects around the United States.

VIE: Tell us a little about your team and how you started as an architecture firm. What makes this group of dynamic designers and staff work so well together? Do you work on projects individually or as a cohesive unit?

PKA Team: PKA started in late 2009 (then as Peterssen/Keller Architecture). By 2018, we had grown to thirty people, and we hover around that mark today. We have sought out (and have been sought out by) individuals who value our passion for creating custom homes for discerning clients tailored to their lives and way of living. In looking for the right people, we think not only about their skills as designers and technicians but also about how they will fit in with our office. We are very serious about not taking ourselves too seriously. We put much of our focus on ensuring we have the right people because every project is a team endeavor. It is a rare occurrence when a project has only one person working on it. We have assembled a group of people who each have unique skills (video editing, model asset management, databases, photography) beyond the requisite CAD and 3D modeling skills that everyone in our firm has. It allows us to tailor our services to each individual project and find the right combination of skills to bring the project to completion as best as possible.

VIE: How would you describe the style of PKA’s designs? Are you inspired by the past or the future (or both)?

PKA: If we had to claim a style, it would be that we don’t have one. Each of our projects reflects our clients—their past and future, what they hope their lives will be like in their new space, and what home means to them. We help them discover this through the design process. Every project starts as a blank slate with a world of possibilities. Through the design process and thoughtful conversation, we arrive at an aesthetic and form that feels right to the client and us, given what they have told us about their desires.

VIE: Kristine Anderson’s bio states, “Architecture is storytelling.” We love that concept. What types of stories do you want to tell through your designs?

PKA: Before we begin to design, we want to understand everything about our clients and all the elements that are important and meaningful to them. We look at the surrounding landscape and examine what is revered and what will be sculpted. There is a holistic picture of those elements, as well as the granularity of items. As we listen and absorb all the information, we start to explore the design. The ideas manifest and lead to us telling the story of a family’s future home through visuals and words. We are using their history of place, transforming the built environment to tell the new story of their home, their loves, and their textures. That story will be different for each individual or family. In the end, that path allows people to participate in that experience, using specific words that may evoke a feeling or favorite memory. As designers, we become energized by the design and are careful about the words we choose to complement the visuals we present.

VIE: Do you frequently work with partners who provide outstanding millwork, interiors, tile, hardware, flooring, or other home details?

VIE: Many of your projects feature ample windows, particularly mid-century modern-style homes. How do windows and light play a factor in the look of a house, how it functions, and how you lay out the interiors?

PKA: Because many of our projects are on large bodies of water, views are very important. But many of the homes we do on normal city streets also have floorto-ceiling windows. We start with a conversation with our clients about what privacy means to them. For most people, this is a balance we work through during the design phase—they want to see outside but don’t want people to see in. This means very judicious locations of windows so clients feel their sense of privacy but experience the openness and views they desire.

PKA: We work with numerous local artisans on many of our projects. Minnesota is rife with incredibly talented woodworkers, metal smiths and welders, and cabinet makers. We have found we can work with them in a collaborative manner and create some truly remarkable and unique features for our homes. Bauer Industries, Bold Metal Work, and Islero Fabrication are fantastic metal fabricators with whom we have worked for years. Fritz Cabinetry, Braaten Creative Woods, and Jon Frost have been wonderful partners in creating distinctive cabinetry in our projects.

VIE: Some of your projects, such as the Whitney Loft and the Meadow Lane Residence, feature unexpected patterns and materials, colored glass, wood accents, or leather. How do these design ideas form? Do you present them to the owner, or is it a collaboration based on their desires?

PKA: We are always looking for opportunities for design. In some instances, like the Whitney Loft, we were looking for patterns that felt traditional but had a modern sensibility. In that particular project, we were working with the metal fabricator on the design of the metalwork, a glass blower on the different rondels, and the fabricator that was going to create the stained glass to insert into the metalwork. For something like this, getting the details right is the key. We also focus a lot on the tactile qualities of materials, how they will age over time, and whether they are comfortable in the hand. That leads us to some unexpected uses of materials that are not only beautiful but also serve specific purposes and elevate the experience of the home.

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 81 La maison
“every project is an opportunity to explore and find new solutions and new ideas.”

VIE: When working with a more traditional residence, how do you incorporate contemporary elements and amenities that blend with the look and feel but ensure the best of today’s materials and design practices?

PKA: Some elements can be quite difficult. Traditional architecture is all about proportion and getting the classic details right. This is often at odds with a more contemporary way of life. We try to understand from our clients exactly what they are looking for. There are often traditional elements we can borrow that will feel contextual but give a more contemporary feel. For instance, if a client wants a traditional house but floor-to-ceiling windows, we may borrow ideas from an old solarium. Or, if a client wants an open floor plan but a traditional exterior, we may look at ways the floor plan can be divided using large openings or ceiling treatments. Those will give a sense of space and division like a more traditional house but flow like a more contemporary home.

VIE: Do you have a favorite project?

PKA: Choosing a favorite is always hard. There are so many projects we like for so many reasons. However, Bayside was the first project where we really got to explore some pretty technically complicated design and detailing ideas. We had to integrate moving louvers, motors, tracks, and electronics into a very tight space, making it look effortless. We also had the opportunity to experiment

with the play of what is “inside” and “outside” in different ways. We were able to bury portions of the house into the earth to minimize the visual impact. We also thought about how a courtyard could be both a space to occupy and a space to view as an object. Not only is it an amazing project to look at and be inside of, but it also truly allowed us to push our limits.

Bayside was probably our most challenging home, too. The sheer complexity of everything involved, with zero margin for error, meant an incredible amount of planning was needed at every level of the design. We had to draw and detail everything to ensure that it would not only get built right but also that everything was accounted for.

VIE: Do you have any projects coming up you are particularly excited about?

PKA: We are working on a few very unique projects right now. Some highlights include a Cotswolds-inspired estate currently under construction, new projects in Michigan, Florida, and Arizona, and a sculptural, minimal residence clad in clay tiles from Denmark.

VIE: Thank you!

GRAND

MAKING

BUSINESSES

SHINE IMPRESSIONS

hen thinking of outstanding architecture and design, our minds often drift first to custom luxury homes with floor-to-ceiling windows, incredible accents, and details to die for. But why not strive for the same level of excellence for a business or community building? That’s where builder Chris Burch and his team come in, working with top architects and interior designers across Northwest Florida and beyond to ensure commercial developers and business owners are afforded the same attention to detail and level of excellence regarding their properties. From iconic restaurants to medical offices, retail stores, schools, and cafés, Grand Bay Construction thrives when building creative commercial spaces.

Working along the stretch of coastal highway known as “30-A” and the surrounding communities of Point Washington, Santa Rosa Beach, Miramar Beach, and Panama City Beach, to name a few, Grand Bay Construction is well-versed in the language of custom homes. Still, people might not realize they have built some of the area’s notable and unique commercial properties. Restaurants like Wild Olives, Tommy Bahama, Vintij, and Black Bear Bread Co. in Grand Boulevard and Seaside have the Grand Bay touch, with truly memorable interior build-outs. Other businesses, like the three-in-one lifestyle mecca of SummerStory, Parasol, and Holiday Café in Alys Beach, also boast gorgeous facades and custom features like tile ceilings, shelving, and, at SummerStory, even a central gazebo-like structure that creates a serene sense of place in this affluent beach community. Consumers can’t help but feel at home and at ease within these shops.

HERE, WE HAVE SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS IN THE COUNTRY, WHICH ALLOWS US TO ADAPT AND BUILD MANY DIFFERENT STYLES OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES, AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT MAKES BEING A BUILDER HERE SO SPECIAL.

eing on 30-A has been a blessing, says Burch, who founded Grand Bay Construction in 2005. After a few years of growing pains and economic pitfalls that affected much of the US, he and his team have seen remarkable growth in their business resulting from the boom of tourism and full-time transplants in the area. “There’s a tremendous amount of energy in this area,” he says. “Looking back, I don’t think I expected such a big wave of work. This area has exploded, and it’s fun to be part of it all. We are different from a lot of other regions where they have the same architectural style. Here, we have some of the most talented architects and engineers in the country, which allows us to adapt and build many different styles of homes and businesses, and I think that is what makes being a builder here so special.”

Burch and his management team oversee everything from their HQ in Grayton Beach, in the center of 30-A’s eighteen-mile stretch along the Gulf of Mexico. He shares, “We want to bring innovation to the commercial market by using a stronger and faster delivery system that results in higher-quality developments for our clients. It also ensures properties will age better, helping to reduce insurance premiums. We are focused on growing our commercial division for new construction in the private and public sectors, with Highway 98 and Highway 331 as some of our primary growth markets, but we’ll also cover areas across Northwest Florida.”

orking with architects, developers, and business owners from the beginning of each project’s build-out or renovation is crucial for Grand Bay to know the vision and the owners’ needs inside and out. “I often ‘see’ the finished space even before we start and keep that vision all the way through the process,” Burch says. But it’s as much about heart as it is about the fundamentals of construction. “As important as it is to know code and how to build, you also have to understand people. Working with different architects, designers, owners, and personalities, motivating my team, and keeping us all on track are key parts of this business for me and things I love. Seeing a project come together from concept to the completed building is rewarding for everyone involved.”

Some other unique projects Grand Bay Construction has completed recently include the newest Ohana Institute day school at Grand Boulevard Town Center, a shopping, dining, and office development where Burch’s team has completed over 200,000 square feet of build-outs. The wave-shaped Beachy Beach Real Estate office in Panama City Beach, the state-of-the-art Primary Care South in Santa Rosa Beach, and RB Collection + Kid Co. in Rosemary Beach are a few other favorites. Burch shares, “These projects, along with a collection of stunning residential projects, are a testament to our team’s dedication and skill, keeping us busy and excited for what comes next.”

OUTSTANDING SALES

100 | JUNE 2024 La maison

In the coastal haven along Scenic Highway 30-A in Northwest Florida, where pristine sands meet azure waters, the name Linda Miller rings with authority in the realm of luxury real estate. With a penchant for turning dreams into reality for discerning homeowners and a track record that speaks volumes, Linda Miller is not just a broker; she’s an icon of success and sophistication throughout the affluent communities in the area.

A GULF-FRONT CASE STUDY

Picture this: 141 Hope Town Lane in Florida’s Rosemary Beach® community, a custom Gulf-front estate that is a testament to opulence and elegance. Linda Miller orchestrated its sale for a staggering $21 million, her biggest triumph yet in a career spanning over a quarter-century. What’s more astonishing is that this monumental sale was achieved without a whisper of advertising—a testament to Linda’s unrivaled expertise and unwavering commitment to her clients’ satisfaction. And it wasn’t Linda’s first rodeo with this property. She’s sold it twice before, each time fetching a lofty price. She and her team are building equity and smiles, one multimillion-dollar deal at a time!

VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 101

When asked how she makes this magic happen, she humbly replies, “God has always guided me. He led me here to this very place (Rosemary Beach) over twenty-six years ago, and I know if I hadn’t listened to him, I wouldn’t have found my purpose. Last year, I wrote a love letter to 30-A, reflecting on all the blessings this place has given me. I think staying grounded and choosing kindness also goes a lot further than most people realize.”

Although this is Linda’s highest individual sale in her career, finding her in such a situation is not uncommon. When it comes to Rosemary Beach, Linda has sold many homes in this fashion.

More Wins in Rosemary

267 WEST WATER STREET: The property at 267 West Water Street has seen a remarkable journey of value appreciation over the years. This property has had a remarkable rental performance since Linda first sold it in 2016 for $5,100,000, producing over $250,000 in rental income year after year. In 2022, the property sold for $5,950,000 and had continued excellent rental performance. Linda has sold this home three times, proving that it’s an excellent investment or legacy home that could be passed down for generations.

Linda’s guidance also led to sales of $7.25 million in 2011 and then $12.5 million in 2017. This success is a testament to Linda’s vision and expertise in real estate and her ability to work with buyers and sellers to secure coveted assets in the market, showcasing the power of strategic investments that appreciate over even a short time.

A VISION COMES TO LIFE IN SEAGROVE BEACH

COASTAL

REFINEMENT

Nestled between the pristine white sands of the Gulf of Mexico and the tranquil waters of Eastern Lake lies a modern oasis that defines coastal living. The beach house in Seagrove Beach, Florida, is a testament to the harmony of contemporary design intertwined with natural elements. This home, meticulously renovated under the creative direction of interior designer Laura Hamilton Mckee of L. Hamilton & Co., reflects not just the beauty of its surroundings but also the unique visions of the homeowners.

Laura’s journey in design is steeped in diverse experiences and deep familial influences. Raised in South Texas with her weekdays spent in Corpus Christi and weekends at the family ranch, Laura’s design ethos was molded by a life lived in varied landscapes and the profound teachings of her grandmothers. One grandmother’s flair for interior elegance through custom upholstery and antiques, coupled with another’s skills in sewing and crafting, endowed Laura with a dual legacy of classic taste and inventive design.

106 | JUNE 2024 La maison
VIEMAGAZINE.COM | 107

In 2024, as L. Hamilton & Co. celebrates twelve years and over 165 projects, this beach house stands as a pinnacle of Laura’s design evolution. The residence sprawls along the scenic corridor of Highway 30-A, a setting that is both idyllic and inspiring. Each of the seven bedrooms, including a whimsical bunk room and a quaint carriage house, boasts breathtaking views of the Gulf, seamlessly blending the indoors with nature.

The heart of the home underwent significant transformations, with the most extensive renovations seen in the communal spaces of the kitchen and living room. The infusion of natural light through newly added windows elevates the airy, open-plan design, while the addition of a butler’s pantry adds a touch of oldworld charm juxtaposed with modern functionality. The use of White Santorini Quartzite countertops and pecky cypress ceilings in these areas brings warmth and texture and echoes the serene coastal landscape outside.

Laura’s previous two-decade career as a gemologist and luxury jewelry designer is evident in her meticulous attention to detail. This skill translates beautifully into

“THIS NEWLY RENOVATED HOME SHOWCASES THAT PASSION, ALONGSIDE THE HOMEOWNERS’ COASTAL LIFESTYLE INFUSED WITH CONTEMPORARY STYLE.”

interior design, where each element of the home’s decor is thoughtfully chosen and placed. Custom furniture pieces like the curved dining banquette and the floating media console showcase the bespoke craftsmanship that L. Hamilton & Co. is known for. These pieces are not merely functional but are works of art that enhance the overall aesthetic and experience of the home.

The dining room, distinguished by its striking Schumacher Kanji mural wallpaper, creates a focal point that is both artistic and intimate. Turkish rugs and Schumacher fabrics add layers of luxury and heritage throughout the home, grounding the modern build in tradition and tactile pleasure.

Laura’s expertise has evolved over the years, each project reflecting her ability to blend functionality with aesthetics. Supported by a dedicated team of four design professionals, Laura ensures every project receives the full measure of her attention to detail and design acumen. This close-knit team works tirelessly, poring over every detail and aspect of the design process to deliver spaces that are not only beautiful but truly transformative.

A particular highlight of Laura’s design is how personal each space feels. The bedrooms are tailored to reflect the individual personalities and preferences of the homeowners’ three daughters, each space utilizing textures and fabrics that capture the essence of its occupant.

Selections from revered vendors such as Visual Comfort, Palecek, Made Goods, and Arteriors support the rich design, ensuring that each piece not only enhances the home’s beauty but also withstands the demands of a lively, loving family environment.

This residence in Seagrove Beach is more than just a house; it’s a retreat crafted with passion and precision, a gem nestled on the Gulf Coast, and a beacon of modern coastal living that harmonizes perfectly with the natural beauty of its setting. Through Laura’s vision and her team’s dedication, every corner of the home invites relaxation and inspiration, making it a true sanctuary on the Gulf.

tay where your heart is full and your spirit is free,” bid the creators of The Lodge 30A, a boutique hotel nestled among the idyllic beach communities of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. The enchanting boutique retreat at Greenway Station is inspired by its rich natural setting among flatwoods trails, quartz-sand beaches, and beautiful architecture, giving it a unique sense of place. Beyond its stylish rooms and thoughtful amenities—high-speed WiFi and organic artisan soaps, for example—the hotel is a place to dream beyond the white-sand shore, past the pines, and into the night sky of a thousand stars.

The Lodge 30A, situated in the heart of the Emerald Coast’s famous scenic corridor along Highway 30-A, was developed to provide visitors with a more affordable option for accommodations in the area. This project was spearheaded by Chancey, an architecture and interior design firm with offices in Tampa and Seagrove Beach, Florida. Celebrating thirty-five years in the industry, Walt Chancey, the senior managing partner of Chancey Architecture, and Sandra Chancey, the managing partner of Chancey Interior Design, collaborated on the design and interiors of this boutique hotel.

“The concept of utilizing a biophilic design approach for The Lodge 30A at Greenway Station was the foundation and direction of our designs,” Sandra shares. “Scenic Highway 30-A, world-renowned for

its indigenous beauty, with its white-sand beaches, pine and palmetto-lined trails, sparkling emerald green coastlines dotted with tall dunes, brackish water inlets, and protected wildlife, was thoughtfully integrated into The Lodge’s interiors.”

She continues, “A mid-century organic freshness sets the undertone throughout the boutique hotel. Blackened polished concrete floors harken to the brackish waters along the coastal dune lakes and inlets, walls clad with natural pine vertical planks evoke the area’s landscape, corridor carpeting patterns mimic cypress hammocks, and furnishings and art integrate to evoke an easy, laid-back comfort. An oversized green wall sculpture by Miami artists known as Plant the Future idealizes the State of Florida and its many waterways.”

Visitors can travel the picturesque 30-A route by car, cart, bike, or foot to neighboring beach settlements to explore all the area offers. From Gulf to golf, they’ll find what their hearts desire—beach club leisure, festivals, iconic restaurants and watering holes, frozen treats, coffee spots, local shops, live music, and nature adventures. The Greenway Station lifestyle center has shopping, dining, art galleries, and more, all steps from the hotel.

One of those galleries at Greenway Station includes well-known photographer and author Jonah Allen, whose beautiful fine-art photographs offer a vivid look at the coastal area as they complement the natural theme inside The Lodge.

Its common areas include Corten wall panels, lighting in the shape of pine needles, and other natural treasures that highlight the beauty of what lies just outside the doors. There is even a newly opened 30A Trailhead at Greenway Station, beckoning guests to explore the gorgeous landscape of Point Washington State Forest by foot or bike.

Sandra points out the main lobby’s focal point: a collection of antique bee skeps (hives made from straw). It accents the long sharing table where guests can leisurely commune on laptops, engage over coffee, or enjoy a glass of wine together.

In addition to Jonah Allen’s coastal landscapes, large prints of the region’s endangered wildlife species, taken by acclaimed National Geographic wildlife photographer Joel Sartore, line the hotel’s central corridor.

When it’s time to turn in after a long day enjoying the outdoors, guests at The Lodge 30A will find all the comforts of a luxury hotel at their fingertips. “Each of the eighty-five guestrooms is outfitted with a small kitchen and various comfort amenities where families, couples, or singles can come enjoy the Florida Panhandle in style and within their budget,” says Sandra. “Walt and I, along with our exceptional architecture and interior design teams at Chancey, were thrilled to work with owners BRW Development and The St. Joe Company on this beautiful new destination along the Gulf Coast.”

s a tireless community advocate, Stacey Brady embodies the passion, drive, and dedication necessary to move the needle. So, it should be no surprise that she was honored as the 2024 Van Ness Butler Jr. Hospitality Award winner.

Established in 2003 and presented by the Walton County Tourism Department in Florida, the award recognizes individual excellence in hospitality service, travel and tourism marketing, advertising, promotion, and contributions to the local community.

And while this is an individual award, Brady is quick to point out that it takes an army to accomplish great things.

“Being acknowledged for my work for the twentyfive years I have worked in Walton County is truly

an honor and humbling,” Brady says. “While I am very grateful for this award, I’m accepting on behalf of each of you. Because together, we are perfect in Walton County.”

Brady’s work in Walton County began when she became the director of marketing and public relations for the Seaside Community Development Corporation in 1999, right after the development gained fame from the success of the movie The Truman Show.

She began conversing with Seaside founder Robert Davis regarding the trajectory of the New Urbanist development. Davis shared that he had submitted entries twice to the Urban Land Institute’s Awards for Excellence competition but was unsuccessful in bringing home the recognition he sought.

nderstanding the challenge, Brady took the reins, entering a submission to the Urban Land Institute organization, which recognizes the very best in development and building in the world. This resulted in Seaside being honored with the prestigious Urban Land Institute’s 2003 Award for Excellence.

“The award put Seaside on the map in a different way—among developers, builders, architects, placemakers, and educators from around the world who wanted to study it,” Brady says. “The award gave great credibility to a development that became the model for New Urbanism.”

With Brady at the helm, her team was able to cultivate relationships and build a portfolio that embodies what everyone sees today.

and financial support to charitable organizations

After her time with Seaside, Brady was ready to start a new chapter. She was approached about a new mixed-use development, Grand Boulevard at Sandestin, where a hardhat was a daily accessory in the early stages.

She began with gusto, putting her talents to work and prioritizing the arts community. Brady took her concept of the Coastal Culture Arts & Entertainment series to creation, which has helped support the arts community while benefiting businesses in Grand Boulevard.

Looking at her body of work and successes over the years, Brady is undoubtedly proud of the legacy she is building. She points to charitable events like the South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival and the Festival of Trees. These have helped put Grand Boulevard on the map, not only as a destination but as an organization that gives back.

“We put the work in, and the strong return back to our community is what really matters,” Brady shares. “Over the past decade, Grand Boulevard events have directly or indirectly contributed millions of dollars to nonprofit organizations in our community.”

A successful tourism industry, or community for that matter, is like a clock where numerous intricate parts work together in harmony to keep it running smoothly. With endless energy and a commitment to supporting those around her, Brady understands the important mission everyone involved in the tourism industry shares.

“I realized what a responsibility we have to deliver on the promise of a great experience,” Brady says. And deliver, she did.

19TH ANNUAL DESTIN CHARITY WINE AUCTION

The Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation is pleased to announce that its 19th Annual Destin Charity Wine Auction, presented by the Jumonville Family, raised $3.3 million for children in need in Northwest Florida! The fabulous weekend highlighted great wines, delicious food from local chefs, and our generous community raising money for a great cause. Among the scenes we enjoyed was a wonderful evening supporting Children’s Volunteer Health Network at a patron dinner hosted by VIE’s Founders, Lisa and Gerald Burwell, at Camp Creek Inn. A big thank you to the staff at ANR restaurant and the amazing vintners from Domaine Della and Betz Family Winery for making the evening truly special. A shout-out goes to The Jewel at Grand Boulevard and Indigo Watercolor for styling the VIE team!
