Hello everyone welcome to the FASTLANEBIKER NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY April 2014 issue. Daytona Bike Week is over and it’s kind of the unofficial kick off of the North East riding season. This year both Indian and Victory made big showing this year, so we’re looking forward to a big year from both of them. Harley-Davidson unveils two new models the 1200 T Super Low and the all new Low Rider. While you’re out there riding, remember this winter with all the snow did a lot of damage to the roads. Watch out for those pot holes, there is bound to be a bunch of them out there. Also remember, this time of year a lot of people are completely oblivious to the fact that there are motorcycles back on the road again, so be extra careful. So till next Month enjoy the Spring weather and ride safe!

Two local rock stations, 98 Rock and The Bay 100.7, broadcasted live for four hours Friday afternoon. Amelia of 98 Rock, a biker with a cool custom ride of her own, interviewed local bikers and vendors during her popular radio show. Then 98 Rock’s Justin hosted the ‘Leather & Lace Valentine Show’, ‘The Bikers and Babes Newlywed Game’, ‘Tattoo Contest’ and ‘Crazy Adult Games’ on the North Stage. Over 125 motorcycles entered the Custom and Antique Bike Competition from all over the Eastern United States. “The reason we continue to attract so many awesome bike entries is the quality and experience of our judges, the amount of time we take to inspect each bike, fairness and honesty during the 26 hour judging process”, said Bike Competition Coordinator, Lisa Shackelford. Judges this year included: Fabricator Kevin, from Michigan, Joey Cihak, from Florida, Jimmy Doyle from Texas and Lou Ontiberoz also from Florida. Motorcycle sweetheart Michele Smith presided over the Custom & Antique Bike Competition Awards Ceremony that was held the last half hour of the show. Thousands of dollars in award money was given out along with awesome trophies. Check out photos of many of the winners and their cool bikes at cycleshow.net. “Action on the ‘Live’ stage was nonstop this year”, said Media Director, April 2014

Charlotte Pleines. “My favorite was hosting the International Bikini Team Regional Finals where the winner will be sent to Sturgis this summer to compete in the World Finals.” Other events on the stages included the introduction of the new Harley Davidson 750, the ‘Cutest Biker Baby Contest’, the hilarious ‘Frozen T-Shirt Contest’ and much more...there was never a dull moment! Lowside Magazine’s exhibits, covering the fast growing garage-built vintage motorcycle culture… featuring café racers, choppers, drag bikes, bobbers, rat bikes and more, were another big hit this year! There was also an adjoining “SWAPMEET” with used bikes, parts, motorcycle photography and artwork which attracted a huge crowd of bike renovation enthusiasts. Last, but not least, there were hundreds of vendors selling every possible bike accessory and riding gear apparel that the motorcycle aftermarket industry had to offer, for ‘On and Off-Road’ racing, riding, cruising, touring, and extreme competition. Next year’s show is set for February 6, 7 and 8, 2015. For more information, show photos and a list of the first place winners, check out cycleshow.net. 7

Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, announced that it is donating a

one-of-a-kind custom 2014 Chief Vintage motorcycle to support “Operation Ride Home,” a partnership program between Jack Daniel Distillery and the Armed Services YMCA designed to help junior-enlisted service members and their families travel to their homes across the country during the holidays. For 2014, the inaugural year for the new Indian Chief built in Spirit Lake, IA, the first 1,901 units were specially badged with commemorative serial numbers. The ‘No. 7’ serial number off the line was a Red Indian Chief Vintage model donated by Indian Motorcycle to the “Operation Ride Home” program which will benefit military families. The talented artists at Klock Werks in Mitchell, SD led by Brian Klock added just the right touches to create a truly unique motorcycle. Hand-laid pin striping, Jack Daniel’s logos, the Operation Ride Home logo and a customized seat combine to reflect the special nature of this custom motorcycle. April 2014

I am just a crusty ole fool, grown and raised in the old school... Taught to use manners, learned to respect. Know that your family, you never neglect. Honor is something you must deserve... through actions you do, .................or ways that you serve. When I'm out riding with fellow riders, stagger our pack, making roads wider... Staying together, the best that we can, keeping a look out for cager or man. If something happens, none left behind. Some will stay with them... ................. tow or parts we'll find. Friendship does gather to throw a party... cause or for charity, giving real hearty. When someone passes, many will show, giving support to their Sister or Bro... The Calling I answered a calling long, long ago A calling extended from the open road Hidden messages from leather, iron, and ink I answered it immediately, didn’t have to think A decision confirmed by my very soul Time and time again as the scoot starts to roll The smell of nature down every highway The thrill of the ride with every new day People I’ve come to know as un-blood kin The sun that has made leather of my skin Break downs that have left me on the side of the road Often times this life being a heavy, heavy load Blue skies, gray skies, and skies that drop tears Freedom my passion, Cagers my fear Knowing any moment could be my last ride I try to keep it real, try to exhume Biker pride Been crucified for failing to conform Rejoiced in the sunshine, Rode out many a storm Learned from bad decisions made from within Have ridden to help others, Have crossed the line of sin

I have bought many tears to those I love Have shook hands with the devil, talked to God above I answered a calling long, long ago A calling extended from the open road © Bob “Bikerwolf” Bryant Road Scribes Of America ™

One thing’s for certain throughout the years The view sure does change in windows and mirrors Long in the tooth and my mind as dark as the sky Like when long afternoon shadows fade and die The sun always sets on the fear Am I afraid to die or live another year Some pay the cost; I’ve always paid the price Just one day without fear would be nice Until my soul is carried away on the wind I pray for another day to begin With strength and courage I’ll carry on And let the darkness fade at dawn

Motorcycle Battery Maintenance Tips from Harley-Davidson A motorcycle battery never gets a day off. The service experts at HarleyDavidson® point out that even when a motorcycle is parked the battery discharges continuously in small internal loads called “self-discharge.” Self-discharge speeds up drastically as the temperature rises – for example in a hot garage in the summer – and accessories like alarm systems will further increase the rate of discharge. If a battery is discharged too deeply, for too long, it may be permanently damaged. Instead of a V-Twin rumble, a push on the starter button produces … silence. And there goes a Saturday ride. Which is why a motorcycle, that may often be parked for some time between rides, is especially prone to battery damage from deep self-discharge, even during the riding season. The best way to prevent premature battery death, according to Harley-Davidson, is by keeping a parked motorcycle plugged into a maintenance-type battery charger like a Harley-Davidson Battery Tender. Unlike a standard battery charger, HarleyDavidson Battery Charger products feature internal circuitry that charges a motorcycle battery at the proper rate and then changes modes to protect the battery from over-charging.

Chargers for Long Life

The Harley-Davidson 800mA Waterproof Battery Tender (P/N 66000004, $49.95) features a three-step charging system that constantly monitors battery voltage to bring the battery up to full charge and switches to float mode to maintain the charge over extended periods. Its waterproof case protects the charger from damp floors and outdoor elements, and the charger is reverse-polarity protected and spark-proof, even when the leads touch. The very compact HarleyDavidson 750mA SuperSmart Battery Tender (P/N 66000038, $39.95) is an ideal take-along for touring riders. Its built-in circuitry cycles the charger to turn itself on and off as needed to prevent overcharging. Both of these charges are sold with a fused alligatorclip harness that’s handy for charging the battery when it’s removed from the motorcycle for long-term storage, and with a fused ring-terminal harness

April 2014

that can be connected directly to the battery terminals and left on the motorcycle. It’s then easy to plug the charger into the on-bike harness whenever it’s parked. Responding to customer input gathered through Project RUSHMORE, Harley-Davidson has equipped all 2014 Touring-model motorcycles with a factory-installed battery charger wiring harness. Another option is the HarleyDavidson LED Indicator Battery Charging Harness, (P/N 66000005, $14.95) which features ring terminals and an integrated LED indicator light that glows when battery voltage drops to a level that requires charging. It’s a reminder to “please plug me in!” It’s compatible with all Harley-Davidson battery chargers and tenders.

Battery Life and Replacement

While the ultimate life of a motorcycle battery is determined by many factors, according to Harley-Davidson a well-maintained battery should deliver at least five years of service. When it’s time to replace a battery, an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer can supply the exact replacement battery that’s specified for each Harley-Davidson model. New Harley-Davidson motorcycles are equipped with an AGM (Advanced Glass Mat) battery engineered specifically for use in Harley-Davidson bikes. These sealed batteries never need added electrolyte, and won’t leak even if the case is punctured because the electrolyte is absorbed in glass mats placed between the positive and negative plates. Genuine Harley-Davidson batteries are specifically engineered and built as part of the vehicle’s electrical system, and meet strict Harley-Davidson design and test standards. Internal components are designed to meet the Harley-Davidson electrical and vibration profile, which provides superior, long-lasting durability. The patented flush-mounted terminal design provides superior cable contact, and stainless steel terminal bolts resist corrosion. A genuine Harley-Davidson battery works better and lasts longer than less-expensive, off-the-shelf batteries.

Service Tips for Battery Safety

• Always exercise caution when working with batteries! • Wear eye protection. • Keep sparks, flames and cigarettes away from batteries at all times. • Never lean on a battery when jump-starting a bike. • Never store a battery in a sealed container; always allow for proper ventilation.

ASK THE ATTORNEY BY: LEE D. GABER, ESQUIRE 1-888-CYCLE-LAW • LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com • www.cycleattorney.com When it comes to awesome bike rallies, the obvious go-to example will always be Sturgis. And it’s obvious why: beautiful wild west scenery, amazing bikes, great food, excellent people – it’s just a fantastic experience overall. But Sturgis is a long way from PA, and the rally only happens once a year. Fortunately there is no shortage of great rallies and beautiful rides this spring within a day’s ride from pretty much anywhere in Pennsylvania. As many of you know, I’m not only a Pennsylvania motorcycle accident attorney, but an enthusiastic rider myself, and an active member of the thriving East Coast motorcycle community. I try to get out to as many events as I can. They are a chance to reconnect with clients, socialize with friends, and spend time around other folks who are as passionate about riding as I am.

May 3rd, Northampton Pennsylvania, 10AM: This event is organized by and benefits the Northampton Fire Department. Activities include food, beer, music, and a raffle for a pallet of beer. I definitely plan to be at this event. Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Services 4th Annual Ride – May 18th, Harrisburg PA, 10AM: Benefits from this ride support the Line of Duty Death fund for EMTs, paramedics and other rescue personnel. Ride for the Heroes 2014 – June 1st, Makefield PA: This ride is sponsored by the Central Bucks Rotary Club and benefits wounded veterans, the families of fallen heroes and the Central Bucks Rotary Foundation. Includes food, and live music. Vettes for Vets Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show – June 8th, Bangor PA: All proceeds from the 9th annual show benefit Keystone Wounded Warriors. Prizes, music, food and activities included.

More than just socializing But many events also provide an opportunity to give something back to our communities by raising awareness or funds for organizations and issues that are important to us. That’s why I have focused this post on upcoming charity events. Please note, that I am not necessarily involved in each of these charities. Some I specifically support with time or money, and others I don’t, but they are all worthy causes. LOH Easter Basket Ride – April 12th, Harrisburg PA, 9am: Benefiting the Harrisburg YWCA, the sponsors of this ride seek donations of Filled Easter baskets, women’s or children’s clothing, twin-sized bedding and other housewares and toys. 10th Annual Pennsylvania State Police Soldiers of the Motorcycle Ride – April 26th, Hershey PA: This 90-mile ride honors fallen members of the Philadelphia State Police, and benefits the Historical Educational and Memorial Center of the Pennsylvania State Police. Includes food and state policefocused activities. 12th Annual Spring Thaw Rendezvous Bike Show – Fast Lane Biker

Good causes and great fun Of course it goes without saying that all of these events are about more than just philanthropy – as important and rewarding as that is. They are also fun, build friendships, and strengthen the community of riders here in Pennsylvania. As these events approach I’ll be writing more detailed information, so you can get a good feel for the ones you may want to attend. I hope to see you at most of them. As always, the most important factor when attending a ride or rally is to be safe. Make sure your insurance is up to date, designate a sober driver, wear your helmet, and be sure to share the road. As always, if you have further questions regarding any information contained in this column, don’t hesitate to call Pennsylvania motorcycle accident attorney Lee D. Gaber at 1-888-292-5352 (1-888-CYCLE-LAW).

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire
