Hello Everyone, Welcome to the June issue if FAST LANE BIKER. This season has been perfect, warm and dry maybe a little to dry but hey all that could change as we all know. 1ST FRIDAY LIBERTY VINTAGE MOTORCYCLES PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA • 1ST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH • 8PM

STORY RIDIN’ & PICS BY LUTZ

A little more than a year ago a friend of mine suggested i check out this open house gig in Philly at a bike shop named Liberty Vintage Motorcycle in the fish-town section of Philly. As Philadelphia is a favorite destination of mine to hit some bike runs up, on the scoot and westbound i went! Adam Cramer the owner and host of this event you may remember from a cable channel show called “Philly Throttle” that featured his business finding, fixing and bringing back to life old and new motorcycles. A class act guy that he is and down to earth guy as well, shows with him and crew opening up the shop once a month to all with an open house. The shop is lined up with motorcycles of all kinds, while the outside gives you enough to keep you busy, inside there’s tons of stuff to do too. Adam usually has many local bands and other entertainment like the band Roxy Rollz and performers from the Cotton Candy Circus Arts perform there on on a regular bases. Bring a cup because there’s plenty to drink too! All of this is in the shop, just show up and have fun..how can you beat that!? And there’s not just bikes there too,you never know what your gonna’ see sticking out of the corner..or above ...until next month!

AFTER 101 YEARS, INDIAN MOTORCYCLES ARE AGAIN BEING SOLD ON STATEN ISLAND Gotham Motorcycles celebrated its grand opening on Sunday, April 26th with live music, food and special guests, Borough President James Oddo, NYS Senator Diane Savino, NYS Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Chamber of Commerce President Linda Baran and Staten Island Yankee’s mascot, Scooter “The Holy Cow” After 101 years, Staten Islanders will again be able to purchase an Indian motorcycle from a local dealer. Gotham Motorcycles opened its doors on Sunday, April 26th as the only official Indian Motorcycle dealer in New York City. Mark Crescitelli is the great grandson of Frank Lombardi, who once sold Indian Motorcycles from his Richmond Avenue store back in 1914. At the time, the motorcycles sold for $200. Today the motorcycles can be purchased for approximately $14,000.00. Said Crescitelli, “I wanted to go back to my roots, and I wanted to bring another great motorcycle brand to the city. I started fixing bicycles in my great-grandfather’s store and then I graduated to motorcycles...the rest is history.” Said Borough President James Molinaro, “It is great that the north shore of Staten Island is celebrating the opening of another business, especially one with such a rich Staten Island history. Mark and his family have been serving Staten Island for more than a hundred years. His investment here is important to this community and to all of us.” Said Senator Diane Savino, “As someone who represents this district I am proud to see all the positive changes taking place. This motorcycle dealership is an important step forward toward serving a community that is quickly growing. This showroom is beautiful and inviting. It makes you want to walk through the doors whether you ride or not. I can easily see Gotham MotorJUNE, 2015

cycles becoming a place where people gather to share stories and a cup of coffee on a Sunday.” Said Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, “Small business is the back bone of our community. It is the engine that makes our economy go. Mark and his family have made an important investment in Tompkinsville, one that signals the great things to come over the next few years.” Said Linda Baran, President of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, “One hundred and one years ago, Mark’s great grandfather, Frank Lombardi opened an Indian motorcycle dealership on Staten Island. And though the Indian Motorcycle brand vanished for a time, the family’s commitment to Staten Island never did. Today Mark Crescitelli is following in his great grandfather’s footsteps by opening the doors of a great new business selling Indian Motorcycles. As an island community, we are fortunate to have such dedicated people who are willing to invest in our borough.” Gotham Motorcycles is located at 364 Bay Street, just blocks away from the St. George Ferry Terminal where the New York Wheel – a 700 foot ferris wheel that will be taller than the London Eye, will soon break ground. East of the New York Wheel will be Empire Outlets, New York City’s first and only retail outlet center that will include an extensive food court with views of the New York City skyline and a boutique hotel. Further east will be Lighthouse Point which will be a mixed use, residential project. Another exciting project near to Gotham Motorcycles is Navy Pier, located in the adjacent town of Stapleton. Navy Pier is also a mixed use residential and retail project located on the waterfront at the former US Navy Homeport. Said Crescitelli, “For me the location was a no brainer. The population of the north shore will increase by more than 30% in the next few years and many of the residents will be young people who prefer not to own a car. A motorcycle is a wonderful transportation option. Motorcycles are smaller, use less gas and are easier on the environment. Motorcycles are the perfect transportation choice for conscientious New Yorkers.” Gotham Motorcycles is the only dealership in New York City offering Indian, Victory and Slingshot motorcycles. The Indian Motorcycle line includes: Scout, Roadmaster, Chieftan, Chief Vintage, Chief Classic and the Dark Horse. The Victory line includes: Vision, Tour, Cross Country Tour, Gunner, High-Ball, Hammer 8-Ball, Vegas 8-Ball and Magnum. FAST LANE BIKER

JUNE 2015

During the opening, Crescitelli unveiled the brand new Polaris Slingshot, a two seater motorcycle which is the only one of its kind available in New York City. The Slingshot sells for approximately $20,000.00. It is registered as a motorcycle and a person needs a motorcycle license to drive it. Approximately 300 people attended the grand opening of Gotham Motorcycles. Guests were treated to music by The Rock Doctors NYC, a barbequed banquet catered by Three Guys Catering, beverages supplied by Champs Beverages and a special appearance from Staten Island Yankee’s mascot Scooter, “The Holy Cow”. KNOW THE LAW BY ATTORNEY STEVE STAMBAUGH

W

elcome This month I will write about things Pennsylvania Bikers take for granted - the right to chose whether to wear a lid, or not. Regardless of how you feel, we have that choice thanks to the tireless efforts of ABATE. If you are not a member, you need to become one. Anyway, I bring this up because Monday, June 1 is ABATE’s A st nnual Motorcyclists Rights Rally at the State Capitol. While you may not have this issue in hand in time to attend the Rally, you can still do two (2) very important things: (#1) - Join ABATE if you have not already done so; and (#2) contact your State House and Senate Legislators and the Governor to state your support for the two Bills discussed in this article. The first piece of legislation - House Bill #950 is the Ride on Red Bill, which is being introduced by Representative Stephen Bloom. We Bikers know this problem well as we sit and sit and sit through cycles of red lights because our bikes do not trigger the standard traffic signal vehicle detection system. This just happened to me last Saturday night as I sat through three cycles before I proceeded. There are many reasons why we need this law. First, we Bikers abide the law, not violate it. A signal light violation is a 3 point offense. Think about your insurance rates, not to mention the points on your license. Second, who wants to cook their bike sitting stationary on a baking hot summer day? Last, while I only had a few drinks in the hours before I saddled up, the last thing I or any of us need is a reason for a traffic stop. We have to get this valuable FAST LANE BIKER

right. Call your elected representatives. The second piece of legislation has not yet been formally introduced as of the time of this writing however it does have a name: Daniel’s Law. In short, Daniel’s Law is named for Daniel Gallatin, a father, grandfather, military veteran and fireman for 40 years who was killed in 2013 when the motorcycle he was riding was hit from behind by a woman who was texting while driving. The current fine for distracted driving is $50. That is unacceptable. Distracted driving is my greatest fear on the bike. Twenty years ago I would look to make eye contact with drivers. By no means certain (drivers can and do routinely pull out on Bikers while looking directly at us), it gave me a sense of safety. Now I look to see where drivers are looking and what is in their hands, which is hard enough during the day and impossible at night. The law needs to have a hammer. I can add that texting is the worst form of distracted driving because, once deleted, it is impossible to prove that texts were being sent unless the Police seize the cell phone at the scene and download the data, which seldom happens unless the accident caused a fatality. In other words, if we survive, we are unlikely to ever obtain the cell phone data. Last and as always, please check out www.ychdoa.com and www.ndhpmf.com for upcoming rides. See you on the road,

Steve JUNE 2015
