FASTL ANE

BIKER New Jersey

ello everyone and welcome to 2011. This month’s issue marks FASTLANEBIKER’S 10th Anniversary. Since it’s start in 2001, there have been many changes in the magazine and on the website.

www.fastlanebiker.com flb@fastlanebiker.com LIST OF CULPRITS

Major upgrades in paper, from newspaper print to gloss paper, from just about all black and white pages to full color! We’ve added three franchises... Pennsylvania was first, then New York and now Delmarva. All issues of FASTLANEBIKER are able to be read online. You can flip through the pages on your desktop just as if you were holding the magazine in your hand.

PUBLISHER Mark Ruzicka EDITOR Axel

We lost some close friends over the past 10 years... Eddie Ramos, our technical writer who was with us from the start, a close friend and customer Big Joe Maffie from Bearcat Cycles, Kenny Falk from J&S Cycle, Frank from Classic Cycle and Auto, and Guy Lemming of Salem County Harley-Davidson, just to mention a few. They will all be thought of often and missed.

LAYOUT & DESIGN Sherry Krial . Home at Work... COVER PHOTOGRAPHY Mark Vetrini

We have had our share of ups and downs over the past ten years, well, the whole industry really has. It’s been great working in the New Jersey motorcycle industry for the past ten years and, with any luck, we’re gonna be here another ten years.

IN THE BEGINNING.

For this months article I decided to tell the story about how Johnny and I met. Also Johnny is still brain dead from being on the road for so long. It all started in 2004 in Sturgis at the Full Throttle Saloon. One of the bikes I wanted to shoot was a magenta pink and green chopper owned by a guy named Johnny Lange. The first thing everyone notices about Johnny is that he’s the spitting image of Kid Rock. I interviewed Johnny, shot his bike, and found out that he was a very cool cat. From that day on we have become good friends. That night we made plans to meet back at the Full Throttle and have a few drinks. Also that day, while I was interviewing and filming Johnny, there were midget wresting matches going on. Yes, midget wrestling. It’s the same as the WWE, but much smaller and, in my opinion, way more entertaining. At 6:30 that evening I finished shooting and drove back to the hotel. Paul and Darryl, my buddies that were arrested the night before where also done with their day in court and met me twenty minutes later. As it turned out, the night in jail didn’t go exactly the way Darryl had hoped. After we left, the cops told Darryl to strip, gave him a jump suit, a rubber mat, and told him to sleep on the floor. When he woke up two hours later he discovered he was in a cell filled with hardcore criminals awaiting trial. He also told me that breakfast was very interesting and he was encouraged to share his grape jelly, which he did. When his case came up in the courtroom, the D.A. looked at his file and told him that he should get a lawyer. His blood alcohol was only .001 over the legal limit. And because he was stopped on the side of the road, there was a good chance that he could probably get out of a DUI. Darryl took the D.A.’s advice and got a lawyer and, sure enough, they let him off. Of course, he had to plea to a lesser charge and when it was all said and done the state still got their $1,500, but Darryl didn’t get a DUI. Over the last few years both Sturgis and Daytona have really cracked down during Bike Week for the simple reason that they make lots of money in fines. Darryl was pretty beat up from having only a few hours of sleep on a concrete floor, but he felt bad that Paul, a guy he hardly knew, wasted the entire day helping him get out of jail. Shit! Paul was only in town for a few days and one of them was already shot, so Darryl sucked it up and said he wanted to go out and party. Of course, Paul was psyched just to do something other than hang around the jail. I told them that I was going to head over to the Full Throttle. What I didn’t know was that the real Kid Rock was playing just up the road from the Full Throttle at the Buffalo Chip Campground. On the way there we sat in traffic for hours, and when we finally got there we had to wedge our bike into the parking lot. The joint was just starting to pick up. A few minutes after we arrived, a bunch of midget wrestlers showed up and they still had their scary clown make-up on from performing earlier. The bunch of us found a spot at the bar and ordered drinks. People definitely noticed us with the midgets, and many of them knew me from American Thunder. Then my new best friend Johnny called me from the front parking lot and asked if I could come out and walk him in. I said, “Sure, why not?” When I met him out front I noticed that he had the Kid Rock cowboy hat and sunglasses on, so we walked into the bar and that’s when the fun started. The crowd around

us parted and people started saying things like “Hey, there’s Kid Rock.” Then it dawned on me: The real Kid Rock had just finished playing up the road and most of the people from the concert where now filing in at the Full Throttle. The timing was unbelievable. By the time Johnny and I got back to the bar there were hundreds of people and the buzz was growing. At that point, a guy we knew started taking pictures, moving around like he was some kind of professional photographer, and the flash was going off every two seconds, so that really amped up the crowd. Within minutes there were no less than fifty drinks on the bar in front of us and a thousand or more people closing in to get a closer look. Because it’s never Johnny’s intention to pretend he’s Kid Rock, all of us frantically started telling everyone who was asking that he wasn’t Kid Rock, but the more we said he wasn’t, the more people thought he was. People were actually saying with a wink, “Yeah right, I know you guys are just trying to play it down.” I guess people believe what they want, no matter what. Finally, we all gave up saying anything and just went with it. The midgets jumped up onto the bar and started dancing around giving Jello shots to all the girls. There were people fifty deep standing on chairs taking pictures and poising with Johnny. It was surreal. Then, out of the crowd, this five-foot nothing girl pushes her way over to Darryl. She tells him she was sorry that they had to meet under unfortunate circumstances but she loves Kid Rock and could he please help her get a picture with him. Darryl, exhausted, drunk, and in the middle of frenzy suddenly realizes that this girl is the D.A. from Deadwood who helped him get out of jail earlier that day. No knowing what else to do he said “sure” and escorted her up to Johnny, who posed with her flipping the bird. The insanity goes on for several more hours, and then finally Johnny sneaks out just before the bar closes down. It was a pretty wild night, but not the end of the story. Four months later Darryl got a Christmas card in the mail. On the front was the picture of the D.A. with Johnny taken that night. Inside it reads: [Jay: Do you have the card?--PS] If the D.A. from Deadwood is reading this, I’m sorry to kill your buzz. But this story was just too good not to tell. RIDER INSURANCE CHOOSES JINGLE CONTEST WINNER

Throughout the months of June to September 2010, Rider Insurance hosted a Jingle Contest for all U.S. residents. Contestants were asked to submit a 30-second jingle highlighting why motorcycle and ATV/off-road vehicle riders should insure with Rider Insurance. On October 1, 2010, five finalists were announced and a public vote took place at www.Rider.com from October 15, 2010-November 15, 2010. During that time, over 500 votes streamed in and the winner was revealed on November 19, 2010. Michael Murphy of North Bergen, NJ was selected as the winner of the Rider Insurance Jingle Contest. He has been awarded the grand prize of a $1,000 gift certificate to Circle Cycle, his motorcycle store of choice. The four remaining finalists will also each receive a gift certificate in the amount of $200. The winning jingle is posted on www.Rider. com. in which they will allow you to seek hospitalization or medical benefits. For instance, I found out that my HMO only allows me to seek medical care, without special permission, if the care is provided within a five county area contiguous with the county in which I live.

I have been receiving some calls regarding the new “ObamaCare” and what it means? Truth be told, I don’t think it’s clear as to exactly what is included in the new bill. However, one of the benefits effective January 1, 2011, is that children of participants in group health plans are now eligible to remain as dependents through at least age twenty six.

Apparently, if I require treatment outside of this area, I must receive special permission prior to receiving care, in order to have my bills paid for by my primary HMO. By signing up for this benefit in advance your dependents will avoid the need to seek permission for their medical care to be paid for by your primary health carrier.

There are other changes that will also become effective in January and I recommend that you ask your insurance company for a list of any and all changes. You may find some changes to be helpful, while others may have a negative impact and should be addressed before finding yourself in a position where the change could be detrimental.

Those of you who regularly read my column know, I am a strong advocate of full insurance coverage. Additionally, I also advocate full disclosure to your insurance companies of all factors both positive and negative, before you purchase insurance. This way, if you ever need to present a claim, your insurance company will not be able to deny benefits based upon some obscure fact that you failed to disclose prior to purchasing the coverage. I would much rather disclose any negative facts prior to the purchase of a policy and deal with the

On another note, like many of you, I am covered by an HMO and I recently received an update advising me of a “Guest Membership” clause in my policy. Prior to this notice, I had never even heard of “Guest Memberships”. However, for those of you who have children on your plan, but they are living away from home, i.e. attending college or for some other reason, understanding a “guest membership” is important.

ramifications then, rather than have an insurance company attempt to deny a claim based on a nondisclosed fact.

Simply put, guest membership is a temporary courtesy enrollment in another HMO plan that allows members living away from home, to receive the full range of benefits from the HMO plan covering the geographical area they are living in.

I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLELAW (1-888-292-5352).

This is an important issue because most people are not aware that many health plans, including almost all HMO’s, have a limited geographical area
