NEW DAY DAWNING by Sorez The Scribe

Years and miles Have taken their toll Upon this greybeard’s body Yet still I ride Into the cold Of a New Year days arrival No idea if the road ahead Will be graveled or paved Only way I’ll ever know Is by shifting through the gears Through blood sweat and tears Past pain loss and sorrow And roads once traveled alone Forward motion in the saddle Into the new day that has dawned

NEW ROC HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S 5TH ANNUAL NO TURKEYS HERE BIKE SHOW New Rochelle, NY . www.NRHD.com I arrived with Frankie and Angelina to tons of nice motorcycles lined up for the motorcycle show, a mechanical bull inside and everyone in a great festive mood and a great big tree inside the dealership. My son, Frank, rode the bull and did pretty well for his first time. We talked with the staff and crew, Jack and Ann Marie, and spent some time with us and we had some laughs. Then it was outside for the great BBQ that they always have over there at New Roc. Then I was bestowed with an honor, Jack asked me to judge the motorcycle show. I asked my friend Bobby to assist me and come along to help me pick the best of the great bikes there. It was very tough, there were a lot of great bikes there that day but finally we narrowed it down and turned it back over to Jack to announce the winners. Everyone seemed pleased and the rest of the day went great. The Staff and Crew over at New Roc, really have great events. You must check one out and see for yourself and grab a new Harley while your there, or some great parts. The kids had a blast and we left full and in great moods for the rest of the day. By Frank D.

ELECTRA FUNK By Debbie Landers

It has been four months of build time, start to finish. The first event was in Ohio 2009, then The Power of D.C. show in Maryland 2009, and I took best of show honors and second place in drag racing. We have filmed an episode of the speed channel’s TV show pastime. Vinnie from O.C.C. was the quest contestant on the show. The bike was cold and uncharged so it kind of went slow, but I did a huge burnout, the quietest ever according to the host Brett Wagner. I got a new sponsor called Eventics, using their controller called the Solution. I now use NIM Hinkle, a metal hybrid. Set the 144 volt lead acid record @ 1287 and now the new batteries at best of 11.9 @ 113 mph. Hope to get lithium batteries in the bike by next year with a bigger motor. Paint, body and motor were done by myself and Mike Glab and Ed Tucker are the electrical geniuses and Ryan Elderbroom is the all around crew chief. That’s the team Electrafunk Racing. We are on U-Tub and face book/Jeff Disinger Skinfunk Tattoo. I had the bike dyno tested at Chrome Cafe.

BRET MICHAELS . CUSTOM BUILT TOUR The Morristown Community Theater . Morristown, NJ . November 27th, 2010

From the opening chords of the first song Talk Dirty to Me, when Bret Michaels leapt on to the stage for his vocals intro, the place went crazy! You are part of the Bret Michaels concert, he has you from the first chord on for the ninety minute party, as if you were hanging out at a huge house party, and feeling like he is playing just for you. I believe that’s part of why he endures. He’s not on stage faking it through songs, he seems to be having a good as a time as the whole audience, He connects to his audience, his music grabbing you as if to say, “Forget about the outside world!“, your worries and daily grind are left in the dust. I grew up in the 80’s and was always a fan of Poison and Bret Michaels’ music. It was a different, fun, free living time and the music reflected it. He still makes millions of new fans a year, and the concert was full of the young, the old, and everything in between, but for us who grew up with Poison and Bret, I can remember popping in Look What the cat Dragged In on cassette. Yes, I said cassette. It was just great, fun loving rock by people who actually wrote and played their own instruments, unlike today’s auto boxed voices and neatly packaged commercial crap. The show is in full swing as his past and current hits keep coming at ya, as the crowd sings each word and keeps up note for note along with Bret. You look around and see that everyone is just smiling, singing, and having the time of their lives. Those of us from the 80’s era have a different kind of look on our faces, like we have one foot in the now and one foot in the then, the 80’s and 90’s, wishing we had one night back from our youth, and Bret sure knows how to bring you back! That’s not to say he has lost a step on his new music. His latest CD, Custom Built, has Bret rocking and still showing us that his talent and vocals are as strong as ever with songs like Riding Against the Wind, Nothing to Lose, a duet with Miley Cyrus, Rock my Country, Driven, a cover of Sublime called, “What I Got,” and I’d Die for You. Bret’s interaction with the fans is constant throughout the entire show and you see on his face that the rough patch and almost walking through death’s door has had a life changing effect on him. He knows that life is short and he’s making the best with his second chance and enjoying every second of his life. He can’t hide it, it’s written on the big ole smile that never left his face the entire show. The fans

FA S T L A N E B I K E R

wanted more and he came back out for the encore and gave us what we wanted… and what we all had already been having, Nothing But a Good Time. After the show, good friend and world renowned tattoo artist, Tattoo Tony, came out and (as if Bret isn’t a nice enough guy, great family man and father who gives to charities year round) they auctioned off the many t-shirts and hats that Bret had worn throughout the show for a children’s charity called Ada’s American Diabetes Association. Tony encouraged everyone to dig deep and help out these special kids. Bret has some generous fans out there! The next time Bret or Poison are in town and you want a night of great music and a great time, make sure you grab a ticket before they’re all gone! It was incredible!! Side note-- A very special thanks to Tattoo Tony for taking care of Fast Lane Biker NY and helping to provide us the space and access and for being a great friend and cool dude. Thanks Tony!! Look for our Shop Spot Light as I head down to Tattoo Tony’s shop for a Biker Sugar Skull from the man himself and bring you the entire tale of the Ink Master himself. To be seen right here in a future issue. And maybe, just maybe the next time Bret’s in town we can get him to sit down and interview and/or cover shoot with his favorite motorcycle and some models for our cover. What do you say Bret???? Pair these 19-inch front wheels with a matching Agitator rear wheel and Agitator front brake rotors. These cast-aluminum wheels have undergone hundreds of hours of realworld testing to meet the highest standards of performance and durability. Installation requires the separate purchase of model-specific Wheel Installation Kit and Brake Rotor-specific hardware. See an authorized HarleyDavidson dealer for details. I GOT A FRIEND WHO KNOWS A GUY WHO... Well, here is another fifine ne mess you got me into, Ollie! It happened again, I don’t know how or why people do stuff like this. A guy brings an INDIAN motorcycle to the shop for repair, (one of those fake Indians) the problem, a blown head gasket on the front cylinder. Now, I have seen this bike before, good looking scooter, but been to all the wrong places. I bored these cylinders for this customer a few years ago after they were powder coated and the edges diamond cut. All that went along just fine. Problem happened when it went to the first guy to be put back together, working out of his garage. You get what you pay for or sometimes you don’t. anywho… together it went and, in a few short miles, a piston went south along with a lot of other parts. So that engine was trashed! With no warranty to go back on, off it goes to another repair guy who rebuilt the engine, stuck it back in the hole, and it ran fifine… ne… until it blew the fifirst rst head gasket. Back to the repair guy for new head gaskets. Notice I said gaskets. Well, here lies the problem. When the engine was rebuilt, copper head gaskets were used instead of composition gaskets. To make it worse yet, the head bolts were tightened to the retarted spec that is in the factory manual of 19 pounds, then turn the bolt 90 degrees. This I fifigured gured out when I saw the black marker on the head bolts, and the marker on the heads. So anyway, only one gasket was changed on the front leaving the copper gasket on the rear seemingly tightened the same way and in a few miles the result was the same. NEWS FLASH DUMMY!!!!! S&S wants their head pulled down to 40 pounds minimum! So upon the removal of the top end, the damage was poking me in the eyeball. The two different gaskets were of different thickness creating an unequal compression situation for one and the resulting damage to the cylinders and the studs is a direct result. Two of the front head bolts were fifinger nger tight under the rocker box, so I started to look around. The two studs on the 2 loose head bolts didn’t measure at the right height. Looking closer, I saw that the stud stop shoulders were up from the case a little bit. Not all that uncommon. They do sometimes come loose while taking the head bolts off. So we get the proper tool to set them back to the case. Not a problem… but they did not feel right. As it turns out, they had pulled the threads out of the case, letting the bolts loose. This could have happened from being overtightened which, in this case, I don’t think so. Or the bolts not being torqued enough and, while warming up or under full running load, let the head and the cylinder move, rocking the studs and pulling them up. That could explain the front gasket problem but the back gasket is another story. The copper gasket used here, as you can see in the pictures, was not a full face gasket. This means that the gasket did not cover the entire sealing surface on the head or the cylinder and it too was puked when it came apart. Not the correct gasket for the job. What the fuck are people thinking when they do dumb shit like this!! This kind of shit gets my German up. If you don’t know what you are doing and can’t do it right, leave it alone. This guy has spent a lot of money on this bike and still has a ton of problems. (That getting the job done cheaper stuff comes back to bite you in the ass every time.) So, on the rear cylinder gasket surface, from the copper gasket, somehow has an impression of the gasket in it that you can see in the pictures which is deep enough to keep the right gasket from sealing. NOW we have a real problem. If you surface the cylinder deck, you have compression

issues, you have piston deck height issues, cylinder stud issues, and a ton of crap to figure on. ALL THIS could have been avoided if you stay within your limits. Repairing the studs is not that hard of a job, it just takes time. And if you repair one or two, you better remove the other six and make sure they are good. If not, you will be seeing that engine again and, chances are, that repair bill will be on you. So, we are going to get set-up to do the stud repair which will be in part two of this article. We will go through setting up the drill jig, prepping the engine to keep all the metal out of it, what we are gonna do about the impression in the rear cylinder, and the right way to reassemble the top end. I just had to show you this mess because I just could not believe anyone could be this stupid and have tools!!!! Have seen a lot of crazy shit in this field and this is one of them! I feel better now… it’s the end of the day, it’s hotter than Hell, think I’ll go jump in the pool with my little floating cooler and think about the day… Yeah…right!!!!!!!! See ya, j.p.fager

ORANGE COUNTY CHOPPERS

NATIONAL FALLEN HEROES MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE

Newburgh, NY - The cool November rain pattered steadily against the windshield as we pulled up to the massive complex that made up Orange County Choppers (OCC) and despite the wet and fog-laden conditions, the energy inside the vehicle rose to an exciting level. Once we found a place to park, all ten models, along with the drivers, jumped out as if we were a group of ten year olds at an amusement park, and the place did not disappoint! Sounds of thrilled chatter and laughter filled the half-filled lot and drowned out the suitcase wheels tagging behind and soon we were all inside the impressive, large building, looking around like kids in a candy shop. The first thing we noticed was the large, decorated holiday tree, among the racks of tee-shirts, pants and lit cases containing various items at the gift check out. Then there are the bikes. Lining the entire gift shop were all the favorites, and then some. We didn’t know which way to go at first, so like foot soldiers, we split up and spanned out, pulling our cameras and cell phones to take shots of our favorites, which proved to be extremely difficult since we loved them all! There, near the front doors were the infamous POW/MIA, Black Widow, N.Y. Jets, Yankees and Giants bikes, along with several others that have been the pinnacle of the OCC company and television series. At the back of the gift shop sat an immaculate, holly berry red chopper, complete with four-point antlers, towing a sleigh full of gifts - the perfect and stylish way for our modern day Santa to travel. After about fifteen minutes of exploring the gift shop area, some of us caught a glimpse of Paul Sr. through the slit of a window across the way where the main shop was located, making faces. We shared a laugh, then waited for someone to greet us so we could set up our area for the photo shoot. Shortly thereafter, we were brought down to the location of our shoot in OCC’s parking garage. In the far right corner, a white wall backdrop which cradled sand-colored, sharp angled chopper, beckoning for some warmth. One by one our models answered the call, straddling the bike with ease for the camera.

a

Despite the limited time Paul Sr. had, he found a way to fit us all into his busy schedule, even posing with our Media/Event Manger Vic Trippodo and his adorable four year old daughter Alona Trippodo who thought the world of the hulking man. Paul Sr. certainly was the gentleman, playing the honorable host with a smile to make sure everyone in his shop felt welcome. Overall, we had an amazing time and should you find your way near Newburgh, New York, make certain you take the thruway exit 17 and give OCC a few minutes of time. By Linda Baldwin

I DON’T KNOW M.C. 13TH ANNUAL TURKEY RUN

To Benefit the St. John of God Outreach Center in Central Islip . November 21st, 2010 The day started out with bagels, coffee, donuts and other breakfast treats to warm you up on a slightly chilly day. There were about a dozen monster trucks, customized beauties to help escort the run and Archie from Kick Start Towing to bring up the rear in case of any stranded motorcycles. The parking lots on the left and right of Formula One Motorsports were packed and everyone was catching up and having a great time already and looking forward to the day ahead. Around 12:30 everyone was off and roaring down the Sunrise Highway. The end spot for this year’s run was the VFW in Brentwood, which had the parking lot filled with vendors and bike builders such as Chaos Cycles, Hellbent Choppers and a few others. The band was playing away and everyone lined up for the great spread of food. There was everything from Chicken Marsala to sausage and peppers. The food crew was really on the ball, bringing endless trays and working their tails off. Hats off! I enjoyed the food and then some hot coffee to keep me warm. It was nice to see most of the clubs coming out to help this great cause. I enjoyed talking to everyone and having some laughs. There was a 50/50 and it seemed like 2 dozen gift baskets to be raffled off. A lot of people walked away a winner that day. The I Don’t Know M.C. has a great club and this November tradition is organized so professionally. The club is filled with great people who work hard to make sure other people’s Thanksgiving is a happy one. I have started to get to know the Club well, and they’re always willing to lend a helping hand and are always out and about at most events. I thank Jerry and the club for having me down and for becoming friends with me and Fast Lane Biker NY. I enjoyed the whole day and can’t wait till next year’s run. Hope we have an invite back! Mark your calendars for next year’s Turkey Run and other events the club has, and you can be sure you will have a great time. By Frank D.

THE WHO CARES COMMITTEE’S 25TH ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS Sponsored by Cavalier and Associates Law Firm Although this day was a wet one, it didn’t stop everyone from coming out to support the children and make their Christmas special. My son and I braved the torrential downpour and met everyone at the Sears in Hicksville, the starting point of the run. We talked to Billy, Archie, and Tom Mele and got ready to head on over to the VFW while the toys were delivered. What a great event! Hats off to Billy from the Who Cares Committee and his crew for putting on the event and to Tom Mele and Cavalier and Associates for sponsoring it. We dried out our shoes at the hall and waited for the caravan of people to arrive. The band played and the food was laid out just in time, we were cold, wet, and hungry and needed some delicious hot food! We sat down and ate and had some laughs with Archie and his family and Dave and Dee from Big Boar Cycles. Before the event was over Tom Anpice announced that Cavalier and Associates had donated an extra $1,000 to the cause on top of an already generous donation! What a great group of folks! We had some cup cakes, said our goodbyes, and wished everyone a Happy Holiday. Till next year! Don’t miss this event and chance to help the kids out. By Frank D
