INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE SHOW AT THE JACOB JAVITS CENTER NY January 21st-23rd, 2011 . Leah Jung

The 2011 Progressive International Motorcycle Show was my first experience at a trade show of such magnitude (over 65,000 people attended)! I came not as a motorcycle enthusiast, but to promote Fast Lane Biker Magazine and raise money for The Corporal Joseph S. Tremblay, Scholarship Fund. I had the time of my life... Aside from one unwelcomed pat on the butt from a stranger (I blame it on the beer, which was flowing like intake air all day)! There were stunt shows (circle wheelies, stoppies, no handed tricks!) performed by Team No Limit’s partners Jason & Kendi Britton and Eric Hoenshell. I first saw those two on the Speed Channel series “Stealth Riders.” There were off-thehook new bikes debuted from Ducati, Harley-Davidson and Victory, and demonstrations of state of the art new accessories. I was extremely satisfied with the diversity of the bikes on display. It brought all walks of life: families, offroad riders in their Fox gear, and blinged out sports bike fanatics. One thing the patrons all had in common was how impressed they were by the Fast Lane Biker NY booth. We had four custom bikes on display, every inch of which were designed and shined to make eyes widen. We had jaw-dropping models rocking out to the Doors and the Eagles, eager to pose for pictures with whoever could brave the cleavage overload. Even celebrities including Ice-T and his wife Coco were spotted mingling with the FLB models. In addition to the bikes (including the renowned Marine Tribute bike), we were joined all weekend by Tattoo Tony, soon to be seen on the much anticipated reality television show, “Under My Skin.” His recognizable tattooed face attracted fans who were hungry for autographs and a chance to be filmed for his television show. Tattoo Tony was also generous enough to share his new Hard Iced Tea with us; it is delicious! Flash bulbs were going off endlessly, you’d think we were having a strobe light party in our premier section of the convention center. There really was a lot to see, I’m not surprised so many people wanted to save the memories. By the end of the weekend, our crew had made many new friends, a few of whom got to walk away with a beautiful autographed laminate poster of Paul Sr. from Orange County Choppers, donated by Lamination Preservation. The hottest girls, the hottest motorcycles, and the hottest biker magazine in the area set the 675,000 square foot venue on fire. Can’t wait to do it again next year! Lynda Lynda is (believe it or not!!!) a single Mom of 2 wonderful boys who keep her very busy. Story of the bike build, who, how, when, where, why, and things that will make a good story . . . (SOMETHING INTERESTING) Early in 2010 Doug Keim from Creative Cycles, Inc in Wall, New Jersey was contacted by David Zuckerburg from RIDES / XXL Magazines regarding several bikes they wanted to build in conjunction with Harley-Davidson Motor Co.. After lots of talk and face to face meetings the deal was done. Doug then spent time focusing on ‘what the bike’ needed to be to please all those involved. Time was then spent on the phone with the person that the bike was to be built for. That person is none other than Mr. Pharrell Williams of music industry fame as well as being the founder of Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream Brand Clothing. Doug asked question after question, attempting to find out what Pharrell liked and what he didn’t like. After careful consideration to all of the fact finding, he then spent a ton of time searching the H-D accessory catalog along with and several aftermarket parts catalogs to come up with ‘just the right’ group of parts and accessories for this build. As you can see, the result of all this effort is a Harley-Davidson “Cross-Bones” like no other. a The concept behind the bike was to come up with modern high tech Harley that still reflects on the early days of Harley-Davidson, as well as the early days of our great country and the struggles we faced. It was decided to build a bike that was U.S. Military in color and feel, with a combination of vintage and current styling. In looking over the bike, I think they got it right. So how did Doug, Chris and the Creative Cycles crew get to this point, well it wasn’t just a ‘bolt together’ project. Looking over the bike, the first thing that you notice is those huge 23 inch wheels and tires, and I’m betting that you think they just bolted on. NOPE! From the factory the bike is fitted with 16 inch tires and wheels. To get that 23 inch wheel and Avon Tyre to fit in the factory swing arm, Creative Cycles had to notch the cross tubes in the swing arm, and then come up with a way to reinforce the swing arm in the areas that had been modified, and still make it look like factory H-D. Well the resulting work has proved to be just that. If you hadn’t been told that the swing arm had been modified, you wouldn’t know it. Not only was the swing arm modified, but all of the electronics that normally sit on the top front of the rear fender had to be relocated, as well as a fair amount of the electronics that normally reside in front of the rear tire. So now ask yourself, why is there a Harley-Davidson accessory tool box mounted on the left side of that bike? Umm… could it be that the ECM now lives in there, safe under lock and key. Once all the fabrication work was done and those BIG 23’s where in place, the ride height of the bike now had to be addressed. Again, the stock bike was wearing 16 inch wheels and rubber; it was now wearing 23 inch Avon’s. So it became necessary to lower the bike a bit to get it back down to a more normal ride height. However it was decided to keep it a little bit higher than it was in stock configuration. After all, those early military use motorcycles faced all kinds of terrain, so a small amount of extra ground clearance was intentionally built into this bike. The front of the bike was lowered 1.5 inches and the rear was lowered 2 inches. In addition to lowering the

bike, the headlight was also repositioned to now mount on the bottom of the front shock, instead of the top, which also lends itself to a cleaner more flowing appearance. Moving around the bike; you will notice small things like the handlebars. The handlebars are H-D accessory ‘Beach Bars’ that have been shortened up 4 inches. Doug and Chris felt the bars needed to be a bit shorter to lend better to the vintage look. The bars have been finished off with a set of Creative Cycles knurled ‘The Grip’ hand grips with a set of one off end caps. To help feed air to the deep breathing HD Big Twin, a billet RSD air cleaner was installed. Doug had Chip over at APW paint the screen in the face of the air cleaner to match the light green found elsewhere on the bike. The exhaust was a whole ‘nother matter. Doug wanted something that was high performance in appearance. So to the ‘fab bench’ Doug went, to build the pipes you now see on the bike. They feature 1 ¾ inch headpipes, that step up to 2 inch then to 2 ¼ inches. They feature internal anti-reversion devices and 6” baffles. The package was then treated to a high temp wrapping to keep the gases expanded, thus moving them at a greater velocity to further improve performance. To make all this work an Accel SLM auto tune fuel injection tuner was used, and as we can attest to, this bike is a runner. Another item on the bike worth mentioning is the hand crafted rear fender which started life as a flat piece of steel. It is hung using to very slick set of ‘floating’ links which allow the rear fender to be repositioned. This allows the gap to be adjusted between the tire and the fender whenever chain tensioning is necessary. Other items worth mentioning are the stainless steel side panels, the hand made rear signal lamp mounts, the gorgeous side mounted tail lamp and license plate, the tucked in front turn signals, the awesome hand made seat pan, seat mounts and seat cover, of which is actually a Billionaire Boys Club Clothing Camo pattern. This is all topped off with a fantastic ‘weathered’ paint scheme applied by Chip from Aggressive Paint Works in Freehold, NJ. Chip and Doug got together and talked over the ideas Pharrell had for the ‘look’ of the paint. They took all their individual ideas and put them all together. The result was an Olive Green which was taken from the strapping found on a BBC Camo back pack. As mentioned previously, the seat cover is actually a BBC Camo jacket that was pulled apart to make a seat cover. The different shades of green found in the seat cover can be found in other areas of the bike as offsetting and contrasting colors. All in all… this is one bad “Cross-Bones”. THE MAGIC BUTTON... A HANDY THING TO HAVE! Okay, now I know it has been a while since I wrote an article about something weird that came in the shop, but I kinda took an unauthorized break that was badly needed. As most of you know by now, after 25 years or more, I closed down the shop. It was time to have the time to have a life and stop working six days a week and all kinds of hours, Hell, I ain`t getting any younger. But, I am still around doing bike stuff, I’m not hard to find. Anywho... One of my customers whom I did a panhead for and whom, I might add, is past the 50 mark, finally bit the bullet, walked in the shop and said it was time to put an electric start on the pan. Now anyone who knows pans, knows that they came with electric start the last year or so, they went to the shovel top on a pan bottom and they all had a button from there, basically. But the older ones, before the cast primaries, was not gonna happen. So technology brings other things to light, as in inventive ways to put a button on a panhead. In come tech starters. They make a kit for pans with tin primaries, that I gotta say is well worth the money. The kit comes with all brackets and hardware, new oil tank, the complete starter assembly and relay and wire leads. Also a new rear fender mount and a belt drive kit that eliminates a lot of problems. By the way, you could use your original style clutch or a new updated style that further eliminates clutch problems. Depends how much you want to spend. They give you a lot of options when you order the setup. But everything is what you need, not crap that will wind up on the shelf. So off with the rear fender, seat, oil tank and oil lines. Next go to the primary side and take it all off, outer cover, sprocket, chain and clutch basket. Last the inner tin. Now this is where you have to start paying attention because there are a lot of things to do with this installation. This is not something you are going to do in your garage unless your garage is totally set up with welders and machines to do some of the work required. It does get technical. You will have the primary assembly on and off a bunch of times to do the steps needed to do all spacing, shimming, drilling and tapping needed to pull this off. It is a lot of work, but well worth it in the end. I first went to the oil tank to make sure it was gonna fit the hole and clear everything. Then I fit the fender bracket to the fender and made sure all parts bolted up and the fender went back in the correct place as before. With those pieces in and fit, now take them off to give you some working room. You really have to follow the destructions from here on, regarding the starter and mounts. The main mount for the starter bolts to the two rear bolts of the trans

plate. They give you new bolts. Run a tap in the threads to make sure all is well. Don’t locktite these bolts yet. Fit all this stuff before any final assembly, you will have it out a time or two before you are done. This is a two piece mount. The mount that bolts to the starter has slotted holes. That is for setting the depth of the pinion gear to the ring gear. The pictures should give you a good idea of what is happening. To fit the next support bracket, you have to take the ratchet top off, and the two holes closest to the ratchet (again, the destructions are important) need to be drilled out and heli-coils installed. This is important! The stock thread in the aluminum case will not hold up against the torque of the starter for long. If and when they let go, it will be a mess that you do not want to deal with. The holes can be done with the trans in the case, with the proper care. As you set up these brackets, use a marker to locate the position, so you can always go back to the mark. You may have to space the bracket on the top cover up, to get things to line up. I slotted the bolt hole in the top cover bracket to get a better alignment to the starter. Somewhere around this point, you have to install the new belt drive, do not use locktite!!! You will have to take it off later. Put the belt drive in tight enough to get the belt adjusted. You will have to re-adjust the rear chain, but that’s a no-brainer and can be done last. Now is when you have to slide the starter up and down on the bracket to set the gear lash on the pinion to ring gear. Follow the specs they give you. Like I said, you are going to have the primary on and off a few times while this is being done. I can’t sit here and tell ya to be patient. I don’t have too much of that patience shit at any given time either and I had to step back a bunch of times and have a cold one cause it was getting on my nerves. It all works in the end. You are getting there, don’t start being a cry baby now!! The gear back lash is important, cause you do not want it too tight or it will tear up the ring and pinion gears, and you don’t want it too loose cause it will whine like your old lady when you want to go out with the guys and start grinding and breaking teeth off the gears. (Had a real good thing to go with breaking off teeth, but I figured to drop it, my wife reads this sometimes too!) So you have to take your time and get this part right. I am gonna make this in two parts. There is a lot of shit going on here, and I need to show you the pics so you can sorta see what I’m yappin about. Besides that, I’m getting lazy this time of day, and I am going to crack one open and call it a day. Actually, feels good to sit here and two finger an article out. If I can get the other eight to get with the plan, it wouldn’t take me so long to type it. May have to look into hiring a scribe. That’s the ticket. Hey, if you are looking for me, or not, I’m turning a wrench at Blockheads with Bob when I get itchy or Bob has something for me to do... Keeps me off the streets and out of trouble... Sorta... TATTOO LEARNING CENTER Looking for something to do and head into Schenectady County and make your way down to 1301 Curry Road. It’s the picturesque view of small businesses mingled with chains. Anything you need can be found in this small suburb - including the Tattoo Learning Center. Imagine, if you will, a place where you are given, without prejudice, all the business information required to start your own tattoo shop, along with friendly, supervised hands-on experience, supplies, fascinating staff, lodging and weekends off. A place where one can expand their creativity in an atmosphere designed to further develop and increase skills one may have not considered. Sound too good to be true? Well, I can assure you it is all that and a pizza! Allow me to introduce you to the Tattoo Learning Center (TLC) owners and staff. We had the immense pleasure to spend a full day with one of the most inspiring groups to date. Upon entering, we were greeted with sincere pleasantries. Chino flashed us a wide grin, mixing Spanish with English in a manner so as not to make one feel as if they were being left out of the conversation. To his side sat two other employees Jeremy and Lindsey, ready for the full day that lay ahead of them. The reception hall was lined with chairs, two of which were already occupied. On the desk sat a sign: Tattoos $10. Within thirty minutes, the center had filled the hall with a generous group, most of which were waiting for some ink to be strategically placed on their beaconing skin. I sat down first with Jeff Looman (co-owner) for an impromptu interview to uncover the beginning stages of TLC and found they started as most bands do - in a garage. Jeff Looman and Lisa Fasulo’s simple love of ink and art launched what is now the most prestigious, and only school designed to teach and prepare upcoming artists into professionals. After spending some time with Jeff and staff, I found that there was a slot available for me to get some ink of my own choosing, should I want it. Being that I have a couple small pieces, I asked for some time to think about it. I wanted to make sure it was something that would have meaning to me…something that would reflect the progress made in my own personal life, and after a couple hours of observing and learning about the facility, I took them up on the offer, comfortable with my decision to start on my back. “Race horse,” a quiet and polite Shoshone-Bannock American Indian from Idaho, was designated to be my artist and I was very pleased with his work. He was not the only student to

come from afar. There were students that came from all over, from Upstate New York, Indonesia, England, Scotland, Hong Kong, etc. Lisa Fasulo discovered her artistic talents at a young age, designing and painting anything from sweatshirts to baskets, vases and the interior of her home, including furniture. She was encouraged to continue and supported by her mother who brought her into the world of business by selling her wares at craft shows and other various means. Lisa continued selling her designs for over twenty-two years while attending college. She holds a B.A from SUNY Cortland and put her extended knowledge of art and business to great use, opening TLC officially in 2003. However, the first couple years were not all roses. Lisa and Jeff received plenty of hate mail and threats by other artists who felt threatened by the opening of the school, but persevered, eventually expanding and opening another school in San Diego, California. Mind you, this school is not just a place where you go to slap on a stencil and trace over it. TLC starts with the most important aspects of sterility and business, making certain that every student is fully prepared by the end of their accelerated course. The tuition also provides lodging, some meals, transportation, instruction books, DVDs, certification, license permit (as per county where the school is located), choice of a custom tattoo machine or kit and many other extras. Most importantly is TLC’s instruction and supervision. There is always a supervisor(s) nearby to ensure the work is done correctly and the atmosphere created is not only one of professionalism, but also of comfort. The Tattoo Learning Center has gone above and beyond what one would expect, always striving for improvement - to be the best they can be and then some. TATTOO TONY’S I recently had the pleasure of sampling the greatest new product I’ve seen in a very long time. It’d delicious, refreshing, all natural, well priced and super cool. Numerous photos from the early days of motorcycling depict riders wearing what were most likely the everyday hats of the period. There were also undoubtedly adaptations from the world of horseback riding, given the other adaptations of motorcycle riding gear. In those early days of riding, there was not the same attention to head protection as there is today! This could best be attributed to the lower speeds of the vehicles, smaller density of traffic and a lack of evidence of what sometimes resulted from the use of improper safety gear. The earliest appearance of headwear in Harley-Davidson catalogs can be traced to 1915, when a variety of goggles were advertised in the accessories catalog. Through the 1910s, several different and distinct headwear items could be purchased from the catalog Harley-Davidson Accessories, each with a different purpose. Among them were the “Heather Jumbo Knit Cap” (75 cents), the “Aeroplane Cap” ($1.50), as well as a unique piece called the “Tourist Hood” ($2.50), an item meant for “cross country driving and fast traveling” that was to keep dust and dirt out of one’s hair on the road. Eye protection was never forgotten, with a wide selection of goggles and riding glasses available by the early 1920s. Some of the more unique “helmets” that were to become popular with riders in the 1930s and 40s were actually little more than satin skullcaps that were stylishly colored and patterned, with the tried and true Bar & Shield logo on the front. And, of course, there was the classic motorcycle cap that became synonymous with riders, the kind that Marlon Brando wore in The Wild One. Caps of that style were available for many years from Harley-Davidson (“Classy Caps” in the 1937 accessory catalog), and later versions were available with the “winged wheel” logo, winged Bar & Shield and many other emblems. Hardshell helmets first appeared in Harley-Davidson accessories catalogs in 1958, usually referred to as “safety helmets.” In those days, you could have your helmet in any color you desired, so long as the color was white Copyright Harley-Davidson
