BIKER New Jersey

ey everybody February is here at last and winter is almost over. We are headed to the V-Twin dealer show in Cincinnati on the fifth which is a show that is open to industry people only and showcases what’s coming out in 2011and what’s going to be the next trend in the motorcycle industry. No one knows yet but most likely whatever it is, you’ll see it at this show first. Then, at the end of the month, it’s time for Daytona Beach Bike Week already. So, if your waiting till the last minute to bring your bike to your local shop or dealership, consider this... You’re not the only one that’s gonna be rushing around trying to get that new tire put on, you know, the one you should’ve replaced at the end of last year but put off till now. I know I can say it a million times and things will never change, especially since I’m guilty of it myself from time to time, but in my travels the last few months I saw a few shops that could use the work now. Just figured I’d mention it. New Jersey has also taken a big step as far as motorcycle sales go... You will now be allowed to buy a motorcycle or a car on Sunday. Most of you probably never realized that Blue Laws prohibited the sale of motor vehicles on Sundays but it’s true. It never made any sense to me that you couldn’t make vehicle purchases on Sundays and it seems to me that Sunday would be one of the best days for sales as everybody is off from work for the most part. Check inside this issue for more information about it.

WE NEED YOUR HELP The 2011 tour season has arrived and we need your help. We are beginning our fourth year writing “On The Road With Johnny & Jay”. The article started as an annual summary, grew into quarterly and now a monthly series. We know you read it because we receive positive and negative feedback. So now is your opportunity to get in the mix. What would you like us to write about? Stories and reports from rallies, industry trends, hot chicks, the bar scene, you decide and we’ll dig through our memory banks, what’s left of them and come up with the article. You can send your suggestions and pics to info@stripclubchoppers.com and if we choose your topic we’ll give you a shout out and post you and you photos on our brand new web site. It’s all about the brotherhood of bikers so jump right in and let us know what gets the gears turnin. Daytona is right around the corner so shake off those cold winter blues and stop by and see us from March 4th to the 13th at the Hang Dawg Saloon across from the Iron Horse on US 1. Also be on the look out for our third rig this year, Strip Club Choppers West, now we can get to all of the shows that conflict with our regular stops, cause we hate to say no when it comes to doin a rally. So if there’s an event you would like to see us attend let the promoter know, or, once again, shoot us an e-mail and we’ll do our best to get out there no matter how big or small. RIDER INSURANCE CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – 2011 marks the 40th Anniversary of Rider Insurance. Currently the largest motorcycle insurance provider in New Jersey and the only company exclusively serving the motorcycle community, Rider attributes our success to the extraordinary support of our loyal customers and to the dedication of our employees in staying focused on what we do best – motorcycles. “We understand the needs of our customers because we don’t just serve the community – we belong to it,” said Harry Bleiwise, chairman and founder of Rider Insurance. “It has been both a privilege and an honor to serve a group of people like no other in the world.” Much has changed in the past four decades, and Rider Insurance has kept pace with that change. To see how far we’ve come, we need only look back at how it all started. Working out of the basement of his home, Harry Bleiwise founded Rider Insurance Agency in 1971 because, as a new member of the motorcycle community, he discovered that motorcyclists were not being treated with the respect they deserved. Harry wanted to do something to change that. His dedication to motorcyclists was rewarded as, over the next six years, Harry gained the loyalty of over 20,000 New Jersey riders. In 1977, one of the largest insurance companies that Harry’s agency was placing business with pulled out of the state of New Jersey. Rather than abandon his fellow riders and dedicated customers, Harry felt it was his responsibility to come to their aid. He invested everything that he had and borrowed the rest to come up with the capital required to start his own insurance company. On June 3, 1977, Rider Insurance Company, the only insurance carrier

FA S T L A N E B I K E R

exclusively serving motorcyclists, opened for business. Since opening our doors, we at Rider Insurance have prided ourselves on offering competitive rates, excellent coverage, and hassle free service. Our employees are committed to providing the outstanding service needed to allow riders to enjoy the freedom of the open road with peace of mind. Rider is also committed to giving back to the community and actively participates in numerous local and national motorcycle events. In addition, through the Bleiwise Family Charitable Foundations and general corporate sponsorships and donations, Rider has been able to support many worthy causes and organizations. Although for many years Rider was only available in New Jersey, in 2007, after many requests, operations expanded into new states. Rider now provides great coverage and service to motorcyclists in Indiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. While we’ve come a long way since Harry’s basement, we have remained true to our mission to serve the motorcycling community with the respect they deserve. “In reaching this milestone, there is a great deal of appreciation and thanks owed to our employees, both past and present, as well as our valued loyal customers, without whom Rider would not be the company it is today,” said Charles Lally, President. “We plan to continue to grow and expand until we are able to provide the same great service to all riders across the country.” For more information on Rider Insurance or to get a quick quote, call 800-595-6393 or visit www.rider.com.

15TH ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE BIKES May 2nd, 2010 . Whiting, NJ Story, Ridin’ & Pics by Lutz

(A nice story to get ya thinkin’ of spring!) All right, got the oil changed in the bike, batteries good, tires look good, what else do I need for the season? Hmmmm... Got it! Gotta get my bike blessed! And it just so happens I know the man to do that. For the last 15 years, when you’re in Central/South Jersey, there’s only one man that comes to mind, Father Paul Van Sant. Traditionally, starting years ago down around Berlin, South Jersey and in the recent years, the Whiting New Jersey area, Father Paul, as he’s affectionately known, is a motorcyclist himself. His blessing of the bikes at the start of the riding year has definitely created a following through the years. As we pulled in to St. Stephen’s Church in Whiting, the parking lot was jammed with all kinds of riders and bikes. With the anticapated blessing at 2pm, we had a little time to kill so we checked out the lot full of bikes, went over to get something to eat and drink, caught up with some friends, old and new! A band named “The Junkyard Dogs” were belting out some cool tunes, we got in on the 50/50, too. Before we knew it, the blessing started and Father Paul proceeded to come around (with some help, that’s alot of bikes now!) and blessed all the bikes and riders there. It’s great too that Father Paul is just as passionate with his annual bike blessing as he was 15 years back. So next year at this time when you think you have all you need done to your bike for spring, think again and check this one out... See you there!

ASK THE ATTORNEY By:

L e e D . G a b e r, E s q u i r e

1-888-CYCLE-LAW . LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com While this months column may be slightly off topic, I am asking, could the Arizona shooting tragedy happen again?

limits and/or made it legal to operate a vehicle with virtually no liability coverage available to compensate someone who may be injured as a result of someone else’s negligence.

The shooting which critically injured Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords and mortally wounded several others, is certainly the worst tragedy I am aware of in 2011 and certainly ranks up there with one of the worst politically motivated shootings in recent history. Therefore I am asking given the current level of political infighting at both the State and National level, is this going to be the start of a new wave of domestic terrorism? Certainly politically motivated acts of violence are nothing new to our country, however, my fear is, given the current economic crisis, these types of shootings by outraged citizens may increase as more people become increasingly incensed by our local and federal governments inability to stop fighting and actually begin to solve some of our country’s problems.

While the argument for low limits is that it saves money, in the end, the cost for that savings is ultimately borne by the individual who is injured by someone who saved a few bucks by being allowed to purchase a bare minimum policy. Additionally many of those same legislators have voted to repeal some types of coverage that we were once required to purchase and as a result many who think they have full coverage on their vehicles, do not. Make no mistake, the reason these policies are the way they are is because the State Legislatures have been lobbied hard by the insurance industry in order to allow the insurance companies to sell policies that are most profitable for them.

I don’t usually like to touch upon political issues, as I have found that regardless of political affiliation, offering an opinion on virtually any subject is often met with an equally passionate position on the other side leaving little room for compromise.

In the end, when someone is injured and learns that there is not enough insurance to cover their out-of-pocket expenses, medical bills, property damage, etc, this simply adds to the level of frustration that everybody continues to feel. The outrage may not be on the same level as issues such as gun control, abortion, social security, etc, but make no mistake, it is a serious problem that can and should be fixed by our representatives if they would just use some common sense and put our needs above their own.

However, this is why the politicians need to rise above their party lines and seek real solutions to the problems that we are all facing today! In my small corner of the world, after twenty years, I am seeing more anger and frustration after an injury has occurred, primarily because the individual who has caused the injury, may have little or no insurance available to compensate the victim. In most cases this is because many drivers have chosen to purchase the minimum legal amounts of insurance, which in today’s dollars is woefully inadequate to compensate virtually anyone who suffers a serious injury. The reason we are allowed to purchase such low amounts of insurance in most states is because our legislatures set these minimums a long time ago and have refused to increase them. Some states, including New Jersey, have actually lowered the minimum

FA S T L A N E B I K E R

What we need is solutions to our problems, not more finger pointing or blame! I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

THE MAGIC BUTTON... A HANDY THING TO HAVE! Okay, now I know it has been a while since I wrote an article about something weird that came in the shop, but I kinda took an unauthorized break that was badly needed. As most of you know by now, after 25 years or more, I closed down the shop. It was time to have the time to have a life and stop working six days a week and all kinds of hours, Hell, I ain`t getting any younger. But, I am still around doing bike stuff, I’m not hard to find. Anywho... One of my customers whom I did a panhead for and whom, I might add, is past the 50 mark, finally bit the bullet, walked in the shop and said it was time to put an electric start on the pan. Now anyone who knows pans, knows that they came with electric start the last year or so, they went to the shovel top on a pan bottom and they all had a button from there, basically. But the older ones, before the cast primaries, was not gonna happen. So technology brings other things to light, as in inventive ways to put a button on a panhead. In come tech starters. They make a kit for pans with tin primaries, that I gotta say is well worth the money. The kit comes with all brackets and hardware, new oil tank, the complete starter assembly and relay and wire leads. Also a new rear fender mount and a belt drive kit that eliminates a lot of problems. By the way, you could use your original style clutch or a new updated style that further eliminates clutch problems. Depends how much you want to spend. They give you a lot of options when you order the setup. But everything is what you need, not crap that will wind up on the shelf. So off with the rear fender, seat, oil tank and oil lines. Next go to the primary side and take it all off, outer cover, sprocket, chain and clutch basket. Last the inner tin. Now this is where you have to start paying attention because there are a lot of things to do with this installation. This is not something you are going to do in your garage unless your garage is totally set up with welders and machines to do some of the work required. It does get technical. You will have the primary assembly on and off a bunch of times to do the steps needed to do all spacing, shimming, drilling and tapping needed to pull this off. It is a lot of work, but well worth it in the end. I first went to the oil tank to make sure it was gonna fit the hole and clear everything. Then I fit the fender bracket to the fender and made sure all parts bolted up and the fender went back in the correct place as before. With those pieces in and fit, now take them off to give you some working room. You really have to follow the destructions from here on, regarding the starter and mounts. The main mount for the starter bolts to the two rear bolts of the trans

FA S T L A N E B I K E R

38

plate. They give you new bolts. Run a tap in the threads to make sure all is well. Don’t locktite these bolts yet. Fit all this stuff before any final assembly, you will have it out a time or two before you are done. This is a two piece mount. The mount that bolts to the starter has slotted holes. That is for setting the depth of the pinion gear to the ring gear. The pictures should give you a good idea of what is happening. To fit the next support bracket, you have to take the ratchet top off, and the two holes closest to the ratchet (again, the destructions are important) need to be drilled out and heli-coils installed. This is important! The stock thread in the aluminum case will not hold up against the torque of the starter for long. If and when they let go, it will be a mess that you do not want to deal with. The holes can be done with the trans in the case, with the proper care. As you set up these brackets, use a marker to locate the position, so you can always go back to the mark. You may have to space the bracket on the top cover up, to get things to line up. I slotted the bolt hole in the top cover bracket to get a better alignment to the starter. Somewhere around this point, you have to install the new belt drive, do not use locktite!!! You will have to take it off later. Put the belt drive in tight enough to get the belt adjusted. You will have to re-adjust the rear chain, but that’s a no-brainer and can be done last. Now is when you have to slide the starter up and down on the bracket to set the gear lash on the pinion to ring gear. Follow the specs they give you. Like I said, you are going to have the primary on and off a few times while this is being done. I can’t sit here and tell ya to be patient. I don’t have too much of that patience shit at any given time either and I had to step back a bunch of times and have a cold one cause it was getting on my nerves. It all works in the end. You are getting there, don’t start being a cry baby now!! The gear back lash is important, cause you do not want it too tight or it will tear up the ring and pinion gears, and you don’t want it too loose cause it will whine like your old lady when you want to go out with the guys and start grinding and breaking teeth off the gears. (Had a real good thing to go with breaking off teeth, but I figured to drop it, my wife reads this sometimes too!) So you have to take your time and get this part right. I am gonna make this in two parts. There is a lot of shit going on here, and I need to show you the pics so you can sorta see what I’m yappin about. Besides that, I’m getting lazy this time of day, and I am going to crack one open and call it a day. Actually, feels good to sit here and two finger an article out. If I can get the other eight to get with the plan, it wouldn’t take me so long to type it. May have to look into hiring a scribe. That’s the ticket. Hey, if you are looking for me, or not, I’m turning a wrench at Blockheads with Bob when I get itchy or Bob has something for me to do... Keeps me off the streets and out of trouble... Sorta... See ya, j.p.fager

NEW 19-INCH AGITATOR FRONT WHEEL FOR HARLEY TOURING MODELS A Choice of Mirror Chrome or Contrast Chrome Finish The new 19-inch Agitator Front Wheel (P/N 55071-11 Mirror Chrome, $749.95; P/N 55070-11 Contrast Chrome, $549.95) was co-developed with Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) specifically for Touring models. The Contrast Chrome version is original equipment on the 2011 CVO Street Glide, and is the largest-diameter front wheel offered by Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. The 19-inch Agitator features seven forward-facing spokes spiraling from the custom hub. The spokes blend to the edge of the rim, minimizing the profile of the wheel to give it a lighter, open look. The fully-polished, Mirror Chrome finish throws flashes of light with every movement. The blackand-chrome Contrast Chrome finish adds a more sinister look to a custom ride. Pair these 19-inch front wheels with a matching Agitator rear wheel and Agitator front brake rotors. These cast-aluminum wheels have undergone hundreds of hours of realworld testing to meet the highest standards of performance and durability. Installation requires the separate purchase of model-specific Wheel Installation Kit and Brake Rotor-specific hardware. See an authorized HarleyDavidson dealer for details. Fits 2009-later Road King®, Road Glide® and Street Glide® models, except Trike.

PANSTOC K 2010 July 2010 . Jackson . NJ Story, Ridin’ & Pics by Lutz

There’s not a whole lot more I can say about Panstock but “what a cool f@#$in, gig!!!” The story behind the madness started a few years back with Rich “Pan” Panarra, owner/proprietor of Darkstar Tattoo’s, wanting to put something together for his friends and customers, who many of them ride, to show his appreciation. Rich, a diehard Panhead fan, just couldn’t imagine having to call his party anything but “PANSTOCK” and the rest is history. The ride that leaves from the tat shop prior to the party, is like being in a time warp. Panheads, shovelheads, knuckleheads, flatheads, all of Harley-Davidson’s best show up. Though the years, countless roasted pigs, bands and smoked out tires... And don’t forget the libation!! This party never fails to hold its own. Countless ride in locally and from different states to share the atmosphere Rich has developed with this party throughout the years. Here’s to you and your family, Mr. Pan, for throwing one of the last true “old school” parties left.
