uly has come and gone, they say it will be the hottest July on record. We haven’t had much to complain about otherwise as far as the weather goes. We’ve managed to get through the summer weekends this year without much rain which was definately not the case at all last year. It seemed like it rained every weekend.

So thats a good thing, lots of new things are starting to happen around the state as far as motorcycles go. The latest spark in the industry is used bikes since there’s a lot of them out there and a few dealers have opened up in this state. One in Burlington and the other in Wildwood in the old Wildwood Harley-Davidson building.

WEATHER...
THE GREAT EQUALIZER: As we travel from event to event no matter how big or small one thing that no one can control is the weather. Weather has a direct impact on the success of all outdoor and indoor motorcycle events. Three of the last events we did are case and point. The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse was booked in Davenport Iowa for Sturgis on the River, Oklahoma Bike Week in Sparks Oklahoma and our first NASCAR event, the Coke Zero 400 in Daytona Florida. All had vastly different weather. Sturgis on the River has had a reputation for tumultuous weather and this year didn’t disappoint. In the past for this event has had floods and severe thunderstorm, this year tornado sirens bleared for two days. Fortunately for everyone involved Glen, Jessica and the rest of the staff are weather crisis veterans and handled the situation professionally. Next stop was Sparks Oklahoma and the weather there was a blistering ninety-five degrees and sunny. Not quite the crises of a tornado but heat can take its toll on you after a few days, however the promoters Tony, Amanda and their staff supplied more ice and cold water than Canada in a snowstorm. This kept us and our VIP tent patrons very happy. Last but certainly not least was the Coke 400 in Daytona our first NASCAR event, unfortunately it was a wash out, and the race was postponed. Needless to say it was not very good for sales. The moral to this road story is; promoters who are professional and prepared for any situation can turn a potential disaster into a great time. Extreme weather or not our sub culture is all about pulling together and helping each other weather the storm, no pun intended. Catch us this month in Sturgis at the Monkey Rock where top-headlining artists like Creed will be performing. For more info visit us at stripclubchoppers.com and check us out on the Discovery network’s HD Theater on Two Wheel Thunder.

NORTH JERSEY CUSTOMS 2ND ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE On Saturday, June 26, North Jersey Customs celebrated its 2nd anniversary with an open house at the shop at 415 E. Main St. (Rt. 53) in Denville, New Jersey. After last year’s open house, North Jersey Customs owner Scott Avery thought it was such a success that he decided to make it an annual event. The weather was hot, hot, hot and so was the excellent buffet catered by Ronnie’s All American BBQ Company. They had more food, and more varieties of main courses, than anyone could possibly eat, but we sure tried hard. Music was provided by the CLB band (named after nearby Cedar Lake), and there were prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Scott had several of the custom bikes he built on display, such as his “Defiant” chopper that took not only People’s Choice during the Tri-State Showdown at Fast Lane’s Rally at the Rock in 2009, but also took the top prize at the same event! It was great to see customers, friends and family coming and going throughout the day. Even customers from his auto shop, Scotty’s Automotive, next door to the bike shop, stopped by to join in the festivities. And there was a constant stream of people coming in and out of the shop, checking out the builds in progress. North Jersey Customs performs service, repairs and upgrades as well as designing and building custom bikes. Scott is the designer and chief fabricator, as well. (www.northjerseycustoms.com)

AIR SHOCKS... DOES THE THEORY HOLD AIR? Well, the last thing we have to do on this custom ride, is change the existing air shocks to a newer, better set up. For once, it should be a simple job. we`ll see what happens. this bike has a PROGRESSIVE SHOCK set up on it, that kinda works, and kinda don’t. The first problem is, you have to find a place to put the compressor. As small as it is, it still ain’t small enough to find a place where it can go where you can’t see it, but still get at it with some ease to work on it to hook it up. Second thing is, you have to connect the pump to the shocks, the valves to control up and down, and a switch to make it all happen. Just too much shit to be running all over your custom scooter without you seeing at least some of it, forget about working on it. The problem is, all the small plastic air lines you need to connect everything. Don’t get me wrong, when these first came out, they were the cats ass, but leaked air all the time so you never knew exactly where you are in ride height. Not good to have your suspension lose air, and have your tire start rubbing on your rear fender, and burn the paint off while you’re puttin’ down the road. I have seen this happen, and man were the owners pissed off. That usually happens when whoever set them up did not set the rear up so it bottoms out on the stops first, before the tire hits the fender, not to mention that whole safety thing. But it does happen. So, the first thing is to get it up on the operating table, jack it up from there to get at the shocks and the bolts. In this case, they bolted the air pump to a mount on the swing arm, right above the rear shock mounts. What a pain in the ass to get at this thing, worry about it in a bit. Let the air out of the shocks first. Put something under the rear tire for support and jack it up or down to find the neutral position of the shocks where they are not loaded in either direction. Then proceed to take the bolts out, one side at a time. This can be a bitch. A lot of guys put Red Locktite on these bolts so they don’t come loose and it sucks getting them out. I use Blue Locktite and never had any come loose, but it is sure easier to get the bolts out when you need to. So, now one shock is off and the other is hanging by the air lines. Cut the lines and that is that. Remove the air pump, which is a project all it’s own, with all the wiring, and things are done down here. The valves on this bike are under the frame at the end of the gas tank, at the front of the seat. Take the seat off, pull all the rest of the air lines off at the valves. Pull the fuse from the wiring and ya’nk the switch out. I left the two valves in the holes ‘cause the fittings where welded to the frame, and I did not want to see the holes. Now we’re cooking. The rest is real easy. The new setup, from CUSTOM CYCLE CONTROLS, is a one piece setup, meaning that both shocks are

in one housing. As in the picture, it really is a nice setup. First, unravel the wires and snake them up to the battery area under the seat, let them hang out for a while. Next, the unit has an air intake tube to be installed on the shocks, so, pop that on and run it up to the same area under the seat. On this setup, the air compressor, the valves, and solenoids are all inside the housing. Pretty sweet. Someone used thier head for something else than a hat rack!! All there is to connect is four wires. Two go to ground, one is for upscope, the other is for downscope. Just plain simple, the way it should be. Put the new switch in, connect the hot wire to the center terminal, one to each other terminal, and the wiring is done. So, back to the shock setup. They tell ya’ to bolt the bike end of the setup in first with just a bolt and a washer on the outside. Do not space the shock to the frame with washers. They want it to float so it moves easy. Now you have to set your ride height up by adjusting the rods on the shock itself. With the shock retracted all the way in to the body, adjust the ends to length for ride height, but leave everything loose. Bolt them up to the swing arm, hit the switch, and let the suspension down, and check for clearance to the rear fender, and the stops. Adjust the rod ends where you need them to be so up is where you want it and down is where it needs to be. It takes a little more time than that, but you get the drift. If all is cool, tighten all the nuts on the rod ends, make sure the bolts to the frame and the swing arm are tight, too. Tie up the wires and the air intake hose under the seat. The air intake hose comes with a little filter for the end under the seat. The reason they want it there, is to keep water and road crap out of thier nice compressor. With all that done, you should be able to run the unit up and down, and check it out to make sure everything clears and works without binding. A little note here... If the swingarm end of the setup does not align with both bolt holes, you have a problem with swing arm alignment, and that is another issue. You can’t force this unit to match up the bolt holes. It will damage the unit, and you are on you own!!!!! When all is well and set up properly, this setup works very well, and are the best riding air shocks I have put in to date. A little pricey, but you can’t take it with ya’. So that’s the scoop on that one. Hope you all had a nice holiday and all is well. (Sounds a little wierd, I’m writing this and the holiday ain’t even here yet, or maybe I missed it!) Anyhow, see ya’ at the show in January, should be really cool! The boss is on the stick this year! If ya’ see me up there and have a question or two, grab me and hopefully I can help ya’. About motorcycles I mean. You’re on your own on the rest of the crap, I can’t help ya’ there, got my own voices in my head..... I think! See ya’ there.......... j.p.fager

SANTA RUN 2009 Barnegat, NJ December 6th, 2009 words, ridin’ and pix by lutz Man, its hot!! With the tempature almost hitting the triple digits lately, here’s a story about something that can take your mind off the heat especially when you think that only a few months ago it was cold! Whether you ride in the hot or, as in this case the cold, its great to know bikers will come out in all kinds of weather to support a good cause. The Annual Santa Run in Barnegat, NJ is such an event that’s now in its third year and it just keeps getting bigger. Lots of support for this home-brewed toy drive and, with the help of the local police, it insures that local area families and their children will have a nice Christmas. Lots of bikers came out to participate and go for an ecscorted ride through Barnegat and Waretown to pass out candy canes from their motorcycles and show the neighborhoods that they really do care. Saint Nic and his reindeer all threw on their leathers and helmets and went on the putt too. The ending this year was at a local restaurant called Lefty’s where Santa’s sleigh was unloaded and all participating went in to warm up with a slammin’ buffet and enjoy the music played by the “Bog Iron Band.” As the band played. you could get that feeling with the joy of givin’ that this was gonna be a good Christmas for all.

TEEN DRAG RACER REMAINS UNDEFEATED typically the other way around. Ashley’s best time so far is 5.12 seconds at 100 mph on a 500 ft. track and without wheelie bars. She also works on her drag bike and is able to pull the motor apart and reassemble most of it without supervision.
She’s 15, cute as a button, weighs about 80 lbs., attends high school and drag races motorcycles. She is in the 1100 cc class, going up against adults, was undefeated in 2009 and is continuing the streak in 2010.
Ashley is currently trying to make her mark in the next class, the 1450 cc Pro Modified Class, and has placed second in the two races she ran. She continues to work very hard to sustain and surpass her standing as a dragster and has tremendous support from sponsors like M&A Excavating, DeTurck Racing & Fabrication (Ashley’s Dad), Debs Decals (Ashley’s mom), Hot Rods Total Biker, Abbi Electric, Cooter III Trucking, The RPM Shop, Guinthers Auto Body, Eye Candy Customs and Mike Miller Photography.
When she was only five years old, Ashley DeTurck wanted to know when she could race motorcycles. “When you can ride a bicycle without training wheels,” her dad, Lonnie DeTurck, told her. Three days after the training wheels came off, Ashley began riding a Yamaha PW50 that belonged to her brother, Jessie Miller, who is 6 years her senior. She ran her first race in 2000.
I asked Ashley the obvious question, “why?” Ashley’s grandfather raced at Reading Motorcycle Club for 4 or 5 years before moving to the big track and finally pro stock. He passed away 5 years ago and the bike he used to race sat idle for about 3 ½ years. Ashley picked it up one day and asked if a small motor could be added to her Grandpop’s bike. It ‘s the same bike Ashley uses today. She’s convinced that Grandpop rides on the back with her.
What’s next for Ashley? Like most teenagers, she is anxious to turn 16 and acquire her license. Unlike most teens, Ashley is excited because acquiring her license means she can finally join leagues such as AMA Drag Bike, AHDRA and NHRA Pro Stock.
Ashley races about once a month at www. pro109.com RMC Raceway located at Reading Motorcycle Club in Oley, Pennsylvania. She has won over 40 awards. In 2003, Ashley finished #4 in the nation in the now defunct AJDRL (American Junior Drag Racing League) which ran races as far away as Florida. Ashley loves the competition. She loves to line up against the fastest racers at the track to challenge herself. No one can intimidate her. In fact, it’s
Good luck, Ashley! See you on the drag strip soon!
EDITOR’S NOTE: If you are interested in sponsoring Ashley, please contact Lonnie DeTurck at DFCYCLE@aol.com.

4TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL POKER RUN
(Ryan T. Baker/Philip I. Spakosky Scholarship Fund) August 23rd, 2009 . Pemberton, NJ words, ridin’ and pix by lutz Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 NJ really does a lot when it comes to veterans, POW/MIA affairs, the men and women who make up Chapter 2 are very passionate about what they do as many are vets or have family/ friends that are. A couple of years ago Chapter 2 organized a fund raiser/poker run with proceedes going to a scholarship in the name of two local serviceman both, Ryan T. Baker and Philip I. Spakosky, from Browns Mills who died in Iraq. The proceeds in the form of a scholarship are awarded to Pemberton Township High School seniors to help them pay for college. The event, as mentioned, is a poker run and with 5 chances to get the best hand and doing that ridin’ your motorcycle... It just doesnt get better than that!! The ending was at the American Legion in Pemberton where there was lots to eat, drink and do. Vendors with some cool goodies to buy for the wife (or maybe the hubby!!) a DJ spun some CD’s with many requests, and a very heartfelt dedication to and from the family of Ryan T. Baker and Philip I Spakosky. Those that came out to this event may have personally known these two men, some may have not, but all that participated came to support a very worthwhile cause in name of two who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
