FASTL ANE

BIKER New Jersey

ey everybody, SEPTEMBER is here again and it’s time to get ready for Cape Classic’s Roar to the Shore in Wildwood and this year’s new rally Seaside Heights Bike Week.

www.fastlanebiker.com flb@fastlanebiker.com LIST OF CULPRITS

FASTLANEBIKER is working together in conjunction with the New Jersey State HOG Rally this year and we will be handling the vendors and sponsoring the fireworks display. The NJ State HOG Rally will be hosted by the Hersey Motel in Seaside, it’s the perfect hotel to be the host for the Rally. The Hershey Motel will have plenty of room for this event as it’s foot print is the size of a city block fully equipped with pool, game room and a brand new bar. The HOG Rally will be having the field games in the ball field right next to the American Legion Hall on Bay Boulevard. Bay Boulevard will also be where the Seaside Bike Week vendors will be set up.

It was nice have an almost rain free Summer, with any luck that will continue into September. After the Summer we had last year and the year before, this was a welcome change. So try to get on out to both of these events and show your support.

COVER PHOTOGRAPHY Mark Vetrini

We are also working now and will continue to work with Atlantic City on promoting our next event... Atlantic City Bike Week which will be held at the Atlantic City Convention Center. A few large Casinos and other businesses in the Atlantic City area as well as a few national companies have already signed on as sponsors. We’re looking forward to working with our new friends and marketing partners as well as the casinos to bring you top notch entertainment and a first year event to remember. We are planning on releasing all the information available in the October issue. So keep checking back here for updates. Till next Month Ride Safe.

STURGIS TURNS 70 THE GRAND DADDY OF RALLIES IS ALIVE AND WELL.

The annual Sturgis rally promised to be big and it exceeded expectation. Estimates put attendance at 600,000 and from what we experienced that was accurate. The weather was great and the vendors were busy. This might not be an indicator of an economic recovery but it’s for sure that bikers are sick of sitting home and being afraid to enjoy the life style we all love. It’s never been about money. Enough bad news from CNN all you need is some gas and a tent. The bars, restaurants, hotels, campgrounds and concerts were all rockin. Kid Rock, Bob Dylan , ZZ Topp, Ozzy Osbourne, STP and Guns and Roses jammed their greatest hits to crowds in excess of 20,000, at several points in the show everybody fired up their bikes at once… Ahh that sweet sound mixed with smell of gasoline and smoke from campfires, the perfect combination! The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse was located at the Legendary Buffalo Chip and the party never stopped, The Chip, as it is affectionately referred to, is the essence of Sturgis itself, camping, bars, concerts, food, girls, vendors etc., encompasses the true biker life style. Hat’s off to Rod “Woody” Woodruff and his daughter Toni for making it the place to be! We were so blown away by this venue that we signed a five-year deal to appear there. Many people cannot afford to attend multiple rallies, so if you can only get to one a year make it Sturgis. Oh yeah and the riding is as good as it gets with, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, Custer State Park and more are only a few hours away. As always visit us at www.stripclubchoppers.com and come see us at: The Freeport Blues Festival in Freeport Texas on September 3rd to the 5th, The Texas Rally September 9th to the 12th in Somerville Texas, The Lake Of The Ozark’s Bike Fest in Missouri from September 16th to the 19th and the Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Florida from September 30th to October 3rd.

NY DEBUT FOR BAG LADY SUE Fastlane Biker Magazine would like to spread the word on one of our favorite entertainers and a true biker, National Adult Comedienne, BAG LADY SUE. A beautiful girl hiding beneath the character of a wild old hag! She has been recognized across the country as one of the funniest, and most likeable personalities ever. In the last year alone, she has played from Alaska to Florida, and this year will be expanding that from New England to Mexico and even Japan! She has played at comedy clubs, major motorcycle rallies, and completely supports our soldiers, by playing at military bases across the U.S. And sending packages of her dvds, letters and shirts overseas to our active military to send a smile to those who fight for our freedom. Suzanne has shared the bill and performed with many major entertainers, from Sam Kinison, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kid Rock to Hank JR. and more! She has a one of a kind show that will leave you hurting from laughter! You don’t want to miss it! This is her N.Y. debute and may be the big break she has worked for, let’s show our support!

GOT SPARK? GET A MAGNETO AND YOU WILL!! about magneto’s and stuff. But the first thing (or one of them) I asked of Dave, is how he got into this.Well the answer was quick--- he got tired of other magneto’s problems and failures, and I guess took matters into his own hands and started to fix all the screw ups. Being that there are only a few companies that make magneto’s, I ain’t gonna put company names here and hang my butt out to dry, but if you have been around this bike thing for a couple of decades or three, you probably know the deal. If you don’t, you ain’t been around long, sorry. So Dave seemed to get a hair up his butt to make a mag that was reliable, not like others of the time. Oh yeah, he started his shop in 1969, if I heard him right. His first mag came out in 1971, give or take, for the iron head sportsters, and his mag had advance and retard, which was something that not many had, if any. Mags of yesteryear, were usually manual advance or fixed advance. The first meaning that you would have to retard the mag by hand, kick your ass off, when it lit off, manually advance the mag and go on your way. The other type was for

I had the reason to do this article. In part, it was that I needed a mag rebuilt for that BSA project I have been telling you about, plus the fact that I always wanted to see how a mag was made. So, my buddy Mitch and I got in my old hot rod and took a road trip up to see the magneto guru, at MORRIS MAGNETO up in Morristown, NJ. When I first pulled into the place, I have to admit, it didn’t look like much of a manufacturing kind of place. Actually, it really looks like an old time bike shop, which is how the whole thing started, I guess. So anyhow, we go in and meet one of the guys, Jesse, who happens to be the owners son. Then we meet the owner, DAVE SHAW, and we go into the shop to have a look. Let me tell ya, this place is really cool. You would expect a big fancy joint, but what you see and get is a couple of guys that are into what they do, and do it well, in a regular kind of shop. Small, a lot of machines, bikes and magneto parts all around the shop. It was like the old time shops I used to go to when I was a kid. That is what impressed me the most. So, we meet Dave and start to ask questions

and the cam covers the mag bolts to at the shop. They are all done by hand, and all run and checked out before being shipped. Dave showed us a mag running on one of the test machines. the mag made 20,000 volts at the coil at 350 rpm! From that point, the faster the mag turns, the more voltage at the coil. They said it could get to 40,000 volts or more. They have changed and improved so many things over brand x and y, it was hard to keep track of what Dave was telling us. Proof is, I know the problems I have had with mags on my bikes over the years, and on customers bikes. So you can do like I do. You can send pretty much any magneto, bike wise that is, up to these guys. Trust me, when it comes back, that bad boy will definetly build a fire in your bike. Electronics are ok, but when they quit, you’re done. That is the same with pretty much any ignition. But magneto’s have been around forever. With todays machining, high quality magnets, and materials, think they will outlast most, and look real good doing it. So, Morris Magneto makes mags for any Harley. From Flatheads to Twin Cams, and English bikes. I think if you put Dave to the test, he will fire any bike with one of his mags. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I wish I had more time to spend there to get more info. When I get more time, I will take another ride up, if they aren’t swamped with work. Thanks Dave, for lettin’ me see how it works. I learned a thing or two. that’s always a good thing. So screw all these electronic things that go up in smoke when you need them. Go back to tried and true stuff-----magneto (they look killer, too. Better than a bunch of transistors in a module you can’t even see). Give them a call, you might be surprised!!! Gonna have my buddy hold these plug wires while I spin this mag up with a drill... A jump start if you will. See ya at Split Rock......... j.p. fager

guys that liked to fly. These mags were set up at full advance right from idle. Henceforth, the flying part. If you did not get the routine correct to start your bike, it could, and would, kick back and shove your knee up around your collar bone, or just shoot you up over the bars, over the seat. Man, I remember that feeling and it ain`t good. So, I got lost there for a second. Dave corrected a lot of those problems by having auto advance and retard on his stuff. But along with that, he corrected a lot of other problems that made other mags unreliable. Gotta bear with me here... While talking to Dave, he was hitting me with so much info, I could not get it in my head fast enough, so Mitch grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down some stuff. What he wrote, I don’t have a clue, but I will do the best I can. There were alignment problems with shafts bonding, rotors binding, small magnets to create spark, machining problems, and more. But Dave found a better way. He put bearings where bushings were. Better machine cuts to keep everything spinning free. He uses magnets that are probably twice as large as the others. Dave stuck one of his magnet assemblies to an arbor press and told me to pull them off with one hand. Let me tell ya, I was surprised how powerful they were. With a magneto, it is all about the magnets and the coil, and how much power is generated by them. Other mags, when you turn them by hand, you can feel the magnets try to stick to each other, making it hart to turn. This also means your engine has to use some power to turn it. Daves mag is set up so when the magnets pass each other, they repell away from each other, needing less force, if any, to make the mag work. I spun one by hand. It was supprisingly smooth. They build all thier mags right there in Morristown. They also do the machining for the cases,

7TH ANNUAL EAST COAST STURGIS RALLY Little Orleans . Maryland . August 11th-15th . 2010 Words, Ridin’ and Pix by Lutz

I heard about this event from friends who have attended years past and said it was like “old time” parties, so a few of my friends and I decided to check it out. The ride from Jersey wasn’t bad and before you knew it we were there. Crusin’ in you couldn’t miss the beautiful rolling country side of western Maryland and how the roads were just right for riding. Pulling into the campsight/event area, you just knew it was gonna be a blast the next few days. Atfter we set up camp, we checked out what was offered, the vendor area was set up with lots of neat stuff from food and drinks to tattoo’s, tshirts and patches Just about anything you could want to cure your shopping blues! Walking around the grounds took some time, just when I thought I had seen it all, there was more area with tents and bikes. Caught up with some friends I knew and they too were having fun. Checked out the bike show which had old to new and mild to wild bikes on display, and right next door was a mechanical bull for the adventurous who could try their bull ridin’ skills. If you got the itch to leave camp, you could take a ride and check out local attractions like the High Octane Bar or Bills Place, both catering to the thousands of bikes out for this event. If that wasn’t enough, on Saturday a killer bike games show covering the slow race, weenie bite, haybail pull and the world famous motorcycle demolition derby! (Only describing it doesnt do justice!) Saturday night brought out the partiers as there was a tatto contest and a wet tshirt contest to boot! Man, a lot to do in only a few short days... Guess I’ll just have to come back next year!

BENEFIT FOR BART POKER RUN April 17th, 2010 . Pemberton, NJ Words, Ridin’ and Pix by Lutz

Some friends and family decided to pull together and help a brother in need named “Bart” Gilbert. Bart. a local biker in Burlington. is having medical issues which has put him in hard times. As mentioned. some of his closest friends and family wanted to put on a poker run to help him out and show the love. The run started at the Lower Bank Inn where a sh@tload of bikes assembled, a police escort through The Pines ended up at the Hedger House and then to the final destination, Jamisons in Pemberton. There, Jamisons new owners, Dan and Stacy, put out a smokin’ buffett and, while a 50/50s went off, the musical entertainment was preformed by Solce Fades. Then later by the Filthy Micks. Perhaps pickup a shirt from the event or checkout the vendors out back or even eyeball some nice rides sitting in the parking lot. The lucky winner of the poker hand was very happy I’m sure as I’m sure Bart would have been if he saw the bikes and the participation that came out on his behalf.
