Relamping Brightens Gyms, Cuts Costs Linear-fl uorescent replacement lamps upgrade gymnasiums while cutting school district’s energy bill.
Left. The Ventura Unifi ed School District projects an annual energy saving of $34,070 by relamping seven gymnasiums with Sylvania Pentron HO Supersaver Ecologic high-output T5 linear fl uorescent lamps.
Above. The new lamps were paired with Osram Quicktronic high-effi ciency electronic ballasts, which are suited for high-temperature environments like highbay gymnasium applications where large crowds can increase the room’s temperature.
The lighting in seven gymnasiums in Ventura (California) Unifi ed School District (VUSD), using 400-W metal-halide and 42-W compact-fl uorescent high-bay luminaires, just wasn’t getting the job done.
“Not only did the lighting create an awful buzzing noise that was distracting, but the metal-halide lamps drew a lot of power, weren’t controllable, and the quality of light was poor with glare and hot spots,” said Dave Marshall, VUSD facilities director. “When parents are watching their kids play, it made it difficult to clearly see the game or event. In addition, we had to wait for the lights to come to full brightness when we turned them on, which was frustrating. We needed something better and someone to help us make the right decision.”
VUSD turned to Sylvania Lighting Services (SLS), Danvers, CT, an Osram Americas company, for a solution. SLS began by conducting complete energy audits for each of the seven schools, including illuminance readings, photometrics, load verification, thermal readings, data-logging reports, heating penalties, and labor savings. Energy rebates provided by the local utility were also researched and secured, and the savings were applied to the cost of the project, which helped the school system minimize upfront costs.
LED lamps were considered, but SLS determined them to be neither as cost effective nor as efficient as the alternative. In addition, there was a concern about glare. Instead, SLS recommended Sylvania Pentron HO Supersaver Ecologic high-output T5 linear fluorescent lamps because of their long life, quality of light, and programmed rapid-start operation.
The new lamps were paired with Osram Quicktronic high-efficiency electronic ballasts, which are suited for high-temperature environments such as high-bay gymnasium applications where large crowds can increase the room’s temperature. The ballasts use programmed rapid-start operation for highest system efficacy, longer life, and more than 100,000 switching cycles for occupancy sensor and building-control systems applications. The Quicksense ballast technology helps protect against overheated bases and sockets, prevents cracking of the lamp glass wall, and uses dynamic end-of-lamp-life sensing to avoid false shutdowns caused by some static sensing methods. The ballast technology will also auto reset when spent lamps are replaced with new ones.
The gyms were completely rewired for zonal lighting so the schools could turn lights on only where they needed them, such as half court. The biggest energy savings was the inclusion of motion sensors that ensured the lights would shut off when not in use. Each fixture is provided with an occupancy sensor. In the past, due to warm-up time, lights were turned on for the first class and left on all day. The new T5HO technology is instant on, so the new controls automatically turn off fixtures after no movement or occupancy is detected after 15 minutes. This represented a significant savings to the district. Since each fixture is sensored, if a group was only using half the gymnasium, the lights in the other half turn off if not in use.
School-district administrators project an annual saving of 193,300 kWh, translating into $34,070 in energy savings and avoidance of 107,954 lbs. of CO 2 emissions. In addition, because of the long life of the lighting systems, the district also expects to save approximately $4,600 in maintenance costs each year.
“The coaches, staff, students, and community have raved about how the light quality is so much better in the gymnasiums with the new lighting. We also appreciate the new system because since the lamps have such a long life, we won’t have to spend as much in maintenance costs, getting up to the high ceilings, to replace them as often as we used to,” said Marshall.
