Leading With Lighting

A

strong argument can be made that LED-based lighting systems have become the driving force behind making building-automation legitimate and approachable in

just about every building. I’m not talking about LED lamps/chips.

With a few exceptions, those seem to have gone from novelty to commodity almost overnight. And I’m not talking about lighting design. That community of artists has its own special place in the architectural world.

What I’m talking about is systems, primarily the controls that manufacturers have developed to drive/operate fixtures and, basically, to put in place a future for the lighting industry. We’ve seen significant development in this area in recent years. But the exciting part is the logical extension of those control systems into other parts of the building infrastructure, particularly HVAC systems and daylight control (automated shades/blinds and dynamic glass, for example).

Throughout the 3,283-sq.-ft. space, Wick and Lindley layered a tongue-in-cheek environment with vintage décor that includes a series of American movie posters in Japanese, including “Life Aquatic” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” as well as vintage cameras, sake bottles, and Japanese cookbooks. In the expansive bar area, which is Sake Dojo’s claim to fame, an expanded steel liquor cage and generously sized bar amplify the sake theme, where guests can order more than 120 varieties on tap.

The effect overall—a high-design environment with a welcoming, energetic, and urban vibe—is exactly what Sake Dojo’s proprietors envisioned. “We are deeply invested in Little Tokyo’s transformation,” said Sake Dojo co-owner Don Tahara, who alongside partners Mike Gin and Enrique Ramirez, also opened Far Bar in 2006. “David and Andrew have a long history of exceptional design commissions in downtown Los Angeles, so we appreciated not only their creative chops, but also their commitment to transforming the neighborhood, while respecting its cultural significance.” CA

The unconventional use of pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) created a multitude of spatial possibilities, along with material efficiency and cost effectiveness—qualities that express SHED’s ethos, literally and figuratively.

Jensen decided to use standing-seam insulated metal panels, which offer multiple advantages. Composed of 70% recycled steel, the lightweight, prefabricated panels were assembled to create a building shell that minimizes energy demands and material use.

Used to construct the roof and the walls of the building, the panels provide thermal insulation, interior and exterior finishes, and critical waterproofing in a quick-to-install, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance package.

Comprising two thin layers of steel that sandwich a core of impervious, closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam insulation, the 42-in. wide panels were fabricated to specified lengths in a factory, complete with Zincalume (Steelscape, Rancho Cucamonga, CA) exterior finish and painted-white interior finish. Once delivered to the jobsite, they were rapidly installed with minimal waste.

The panels run continuously over the outside of the building frame, with a male-female connection providing a water- and airtight seal at each seam. The result is a well-insulated building envelope that eliminates the thermal bridging and air leakage associated with traditional framing and enclosure systems. From an aesthetic standpoint, the deep, sturdy seams create strong shadow lines and give relief and rhythm to the building volume. The Zincalume exterior requires no maintenance and will weather to a dull patina over time, similar to the weather-beaten appearance of a traditional galvanized-steel garden pail.

The building, with its nine large roll-up doors, is designed to rely on natural ventilation during most of the year. An energy-efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation system, and a demand-sensitive kitchen hood activated and adjusted by sensors complement this passive strategy. Abundant glazing, shaded by deep overhangs and perforated metal screens, allows natural light in while tempering direct sun, lessening electrical demand for lighting and cooling. In addition, rooftop photovoltaic panels produce approximately a third of the building’s energy needs.

But what happens when the conditions are constantly changing? “This is where the art of the best guess comes in,” said Marshall. “Nothing fits this better than when trying to design a snowmelt system.”

CONSTANT CHANGE

Weather forecasters are all too familiar with how hard it is to predict what the next hour or day or week will bring when it comes to atmospheric conditions.

Marshall explained that when an engineer sets out to design a snowmelt system, a first task is to look at weather data for a given area. How cold does it get? How much snow usually falls? What’s the density of this snow?

Because of the unpredictability of nature, it’s necessary for snowmelt-system designers to be creative in their approach. After all, snowfall amounts may range from a few inches to a few feet.

hile dramatic shots of fire and flames make for attention-grabbing stories on the nightly news, the spread of smoke

This is particularly true for high-rise structures that typically include multiple stairways and internal elevator shafts. These enclosures and hoistways can act like a chimney or flue in a fire, allowing smoke to infiltrate otherwise safe floors. The result is smoke inhalation and death for those trapped on seemingly untouched or “safe” floors above a fire.

Public-passenger elevators are installed to serve all floors of a building or may have separate banks targeting exclusive floors, which requires multiple lobbies to protect the hoistway from the migration of smoke and other combustion products.

“Public elevators are a good target for hoistway closures since they eliminate the construction of elevator lobbies throughout the building,” explained Dawdy. “This is a significant savings for residential and commercial buildings that have elevators targeting exclusive floors.

When public elevators need to be used for emergency evacuation, hoistway smoke closures are still appropriate, based on 2015 IBC Section 713.14.1, “Elevator, Dumbwaiter and Other Hoistways,” which states “Enclosed elevator lobbies are not required where additional doors are provided at the hoistway opening…when tested in accordance with UL 1784 without an artificial bottom seal.”

There are some IBC codes and sections architects and designers must be aware of, including Section 403.6.2, “Occupant Evacuation Elevators” that states, “Where installed in accordance with Section 3008, passenger elevators for general public use shall be permitted to be used for occupant self-evacuation. Where elevators are to be used for occupant self-evacuation during fires, all passenger elevators for general public use shall comply with Section 3008 (10 sections).”

he streetscape in the 100 block of Giralda Ave. in Coral Gables, FL, was created to be a pedestrian-friendly area by architectural firm Cooper Robertson, New York (cooperrobertson.com). In the summer of 2018, the area was enhanced by 800 sombrillas (umbrellas). The parasols are part of a traveling art installation called the “Umbrella Sky” project, designed by Sexatafeira, a Portugal-based creative agency.
