The
Roselander EDITION 43 - SPRING 2020
A Welcome Message... Welcome to this term’s edition of The Roselander.
I
would firstly like to congratulate all of our staff and Year 11 students following the validated data from the Department for Education in February. The Roseland Academy was once again at the top of the performance tables for Cornwall with a Progress 8 score of ‘Well Above Average’. This is the most outstanding achievement, and the fourth year in a row that The Roseland has topped the tables. It is a testament to the fantastic work of everyone within school. This term has definitely had a focus on fundraising and our community. Thank you to all staff and students who have raised money for various charities during our non-uniform days. These have included Blind Veterans UK, Book Aid International and Cornwall Air Ambulance. We have also released our latest film which focuses on ‘a Community Working Together’. We do really value your feedback as this is what enables our school to continue to be outstanding. Our Year 11 students are well underway with their preparations for the summer exam series. The trial exams in January were an opportunity for students to work under examination conditions in Room 13 and reinforced that preparation is the key to success. All of our students are now working hard on the areas highlighted from the trial exam results to ensure success in their final GCSE and BTec qualifications. Our Family Learning sessions have continued this term with a focus on Years 9 and 10. For both sessions the emphasis was on preparation for assessments and final exams and the feedback from both students and families was exceptional. We continue to plan further events for the rest of the academic year and will continue to promote these on our Facebook page. Our Year 9 students are also starting to think about their options choices and have undertaken their first ‘straw poll’ to allow the initial stages of the process to commence. We look forward to welcoming students and their parents to an options evening in April. All schools in the Trust continue to develop curriculum links and partnerships. It was great for colleagues from across all schools to join us at our inset ‘Share your Skills’ in March and also the primary students’ involvement in our Roseland Sports Network events and Science Week have been a real highlight. Thank you to all the staff and students for creating opportunities across the Trust. I hope you enjoy reading this edition of The Roselander which really showcases the wonderful talents within our school. The performances at the #BringTheHeliHome concert, the Combined Truro Schools Arts Exhibition, the Marines’ Day and the student pianists who joined visiting concert pianist Richard Meyrick were exceptional. All the individual student successes are also an important part of our success so please make sure you inform us of any achievements of your child outside of school. I hope you all have an enjoyable Easter break and I look forward to seeing you at school events in the summer term. Best wishes, Mr Chris Challis Headteacher

The name Savannah was submitted by Year 8 student Millie. Mrs Challoner, Teaching Practitioner of Animal Care, put the names to students to vote for their favourite and Savannah was victorious.
Also officially introducing… Savannah, our female leopard gecko! Last term we ran a ‘Name the Gecko’ competition to welcome our new addition to The Roseland Community Farm. We had many lovely name ideas brought forward,
We look forward to learning more about our leopard gecko whilst she is at the farm. Gru, our new baby corn snake joined us in late February and is settling in nicely. She is thoroughly enjoyed being handled by all of the students at the farm club.

YEAR 11 TRIAL EXAMS
S
pring Term is always a busy start with GCSE Exam preparations - Year 11 students undertake their Trial Exam week, which took place this year from 13 January until 17 January. These tests are vital in students’ preparation for their exams as it allows them to experience working in the test conditions that they will be taking their exams in, before the results highlight revision areas and support required. Year 11 students were also presented with their results from their Trial Exams in the same way as they will when receiving their GCSE results in August, allowing them to further know what to expect when the Summer Term comes around. Their Trial Exam results assembly took place on Tuesday 4 February, allowing plenty of revision time for all their subjects in time for the GCSE season in the Summer Term. The Roseland also schedules Targeted Support, masterclasses and revision sessions for the students to attend and work on their focus areas. Good luck to all students who will be sitting their GCSE Exams in 2020!

CAREERS FAIR MORNINGS YEAR 5 TASTER
T
his term we hosted our biennial Careers Fair.
Students, parents and carers from Years 8 to 11 visited The Roseland Academy on the evening on Tuesday 4 February to interact with a variety of vendors and discover a potential career path. The Careers Fair is always such a huge success as it allows students to openly ask questions to representatives from different occupations. It also allows the younger students to consider their options choices as to what GCSE subjects they would like to study when they enter Year 10. The evening also allows the older students to consider their future education options, such as the different apprenticeships or college courses available - we had representatives available to answer their questions. Many stalls at the fair offered taster activities for students to take part in, such as Virtual Reality headset experiences, practical activities with the army and decorating plates with professional chefs – the night was filled with fun and learning for all involved. We also had staff from the Cornwall Seal Group attend to talk about working with the beautiful and fascinating animals. Representatives from Corbey Construction came along to share what working in their industry is like. Staff from the NHS spoke about what working within the medical profession entails. Thank you to all those who attended this important evening, we hope it aided you in making a decision about your future options.Â

MARINES VISIBILITY DAY
O
n Wednesday 26 February, we were fortunate to have representatives from the Marines visit The Roseland Academy to run workshops with selected students. The students involved in the workshops had expressed interest in joining the Marines at our Careers Fair. Students spent the morning working alongside the representatives, undertaking scoping, physical, logical and teamwork activities. One Year 10 student said,
“ I thoroughly enjoyed the session as it opened my eyes as to what tasks I’ll face when training to become part of the Marines. I’m feeling inspired from the day and know what I need to aim for in order to have the best chance.”

WORLD BOOK DAY
O
On Thursday 5 March, The Roseland Academy celebrated World Book Day with staff and students all coming together to share their love of literature.
World Book Day is an annual worldwide event which celebrates reading for pleasure, and is an important day for authors, illustrators and book lovers. Staff and students were invited to dress up as a story book character of their choice and many departments chose their own theme. Everyone brought in a voluntary donation towards Book Aid International, with funds raised going towards providing books and reading support to communities where people struggle to learn to read due to lack of resources. Mrs Birchall supplied fruit, croissants and muffins for a ‘Big Booky Breakfast’ in the eLC, where students and staff were invited to sit, read and discuss their favourite books. Students also had the chance to swap their old books with each other so they could have something new to read and discuss with one another. At lunchtime in the Hall, there was a competition of ‘Name that Book’ where Mrs Birchall sent out hints from the first sentence of a book and it was up to the students to identify the title in order to win a prize! Literary events were held throughout the day, including ‘drop everything and read’ intervals where students had to have their reading books at the ready, and riddle solving at break time. Junior librarians were also on hand to assist and advise students to choose a new book to read throughout lunchtime.

FAMILY LEARNING SESSIONS
W
e have continued with our popular Family Learning sessions. Our first one of 2020 took place on 11 February with Year 10 and the topic was Early Preparation for GCSEs.
The evening reviewed useful revision techniques and also gave students and their families the opportunity to explore the curriculum that will be studied in Year 10. Starting the revision techniques early reduces exam pressure by making the process more manageable and less daunting. The evening was successful in highlighting how best to prepare for GCSEs as the year progresses. The feedback from the evening was extremely positive:
“Loads of useful information!” “Thoroughly interesting evening, thank you for organising.” “Last year my eldest son took his GCSE’s and I know from experience that these Family Learning sessions were extremely beneficial not only for him but also for us (so we know how to support him), thank you for putting these sessions on for us.” Our second Family Learning Session of the term took place on 3 March and was tailored to Year 9 students with their parents/carers. The focus was on preparation for their assessment week which usually takes place mid-March. The whole aim of assessment week is to enable Year 9 students to practise GCSE and BTec qualifications through specific assessment tasks linked to their learning. We continue to run Family Learning events as evidence has shown that when families have participated, students have achieved or exceeded their targets. They have also self-managed more easily through the exam season. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to students and their parents/carers for attending our evening. We endeavour to maximise student achievement and support their well-being throughout their years at The Roseland Academy and beyond.
“Awesome presentations, engaging information to the point and super helpful.”

COMBINED TRURO SCHOOLS ARTS EVENTS
O
n Friday 10 January, selected Year 9 students from The Roseland Academy joined other Key Stage 3 students from four local secondary schools to take part in an exciting collaborative arts workshop. This was part of the annual Combined Truro Schools Arts Events programme, a successful project currently running in its sixteenth consecutive year. The day began with a visit to Truro Cathedral, where students made sketches of some of the fantastic architectural features of this unique building. These sketches were then used as a starting point for the mosaic workshop, which was based in the Art Department at Truro High School for Girls and led by visiting local artist and mosaic specialist, Sam Elliot. Students worked together on a series of group pieces alongside artist Sam. This year’s theme was ‘Bringing the Outside Inside’ and in keeping with this theme, students used coloured glass to create mosaic pieces. At the end of the day students combined their group pieces together to form a larger piece of work, creating an outstanding display in Truro Cathedral - the display also featured work by Year 9 students from their weekly art lessons which included printmaking and photography. The exhibition opened with a Private View for invited guests only on Thursday 11 February. Year 9 students and their families were welcome and encouraged to attend the evening, which also featured live music, refreshments and prize giving. Ten talented Year 9 students were also awarded with ‘Highly Commended’ certificates for their outstanding contribution to this year’s exhibition. One overall winner for each secondary school was selected from the Highly Commended students. Following the private viewing, the exhibition remained open during the month until Sunday 23 February, meaning the public were welcome to view the amazing work whilst out and about in Truro. A big well done to all students who took part in the exhibition and a special mention to Miya and Dakotah whose work will be featured in the programme for the TRLC Award Evening. Thank you, too, to our amazing staff in the DPT department for all their efforts and support for students.

BRING THE HELI HOME
W
e have done plenty of fundraising throughout this term. One of the main causes we have been supporting has been Cornwall Air Ambulance and their #BringTheHeliHome incentive - which raised money towards a new air ambulance at a target of £2.5million.
The Roseland Academy successfully raised an outstanding £1077.17 to donate to this important cause by hosting an amazing concert, led and performed by Year 8 students, as well as a Valentine’s ‘Wear Something Red’ non-uniform day. The #BringTheHeliHome concert was held on 13 February, as both vocal and instrumental pieces were performed on the night in a mix of solo and group acts. Thank you to all who took part. We are happy that Cornwall Air Ambulance hit their desired target and that we were able to help this worthy cause. Thank you to everyone who supports our non-uniform days and contributes to so many worthy charities.

INSPIRING MASTERCLASSES
O
n Wednesday 22 January, visiting concert pianist Mr Richard Meyrick delivered two inspiring masterclasses for students at The Roseland Academy.
Professional pianist Mr Meyrick travels the length and breadth of the UK as part of ‘The Pianoman Scholarships Scheme’, a national programme to encourage and nurture talented young pianists, courtesy of sponsors Sir Harvey and Lady McGrath. Five talented pianists from Years 8 to 11 (Imogen, Wilf, Poppy, Russell and Jacob) were invited to prepare a solo performance piece in advance in order to take part in the masterclass, and each young performer received an individual coaching session in front of an invited audience of GCSE Music classes and instrumental music students. After these sessions, Mr Meyrick then also graciously performed two outstanding solo works for the students, by Chopin and Rachmaninov, and gave the group some entertaining insights into the world of professional music making and the art of performing. Mr Meyrick’s experience and advice for the students was invaluable, providing a new perspective on their technique and future goals surrounding their music - in terms of both preparation and presentation of their own performative pieces.

THE ROSELAND SPORTS NETWORK PRIMARY FESTIVALS
T
he Roseland Sports Network Primary Festivals are events where we welcome our nine partner primary schools to participate in sports fixtures at The Roseland Academy, alongside The Roseland Sports Leaders.
On Wednesday 12 February we held our Primary Basketball festival - this session was our best attended to date! During the afternoon the schools competed with each other in a bid to take home the 2020 Basketball Champions Shield. The matches were umpired by our Year 10 BTec Sport students, who also planned and delivered warm-up activities for the primary school children.

This is a student-driven festival aimed at increasing participation and engagement in physical activity for primary students with low self-confidence. At this event, the Year 10 students involved undertook their Unit 6: Leadership in Sport Assessment to showcase their exceptional skills to increase confidence in sports and offer guidance to the younger students. Well done to all involved! 24.

big thank you to the PE Department for organising opportunities for The Roseland students to compete against others in the area, and showcase the talent that they work on in their weekly clubs.
Well done to The Roseland students who have attended and participated in these fixtures. In every event students have been brilliant ambassadors for the school; have showed great determination, teamwork and progress. Our Key Stage 3 Badminton Team came runners-up in the East & West County Badminton tournament on 4 February. The Roseland girls won against Torpoint Community College and Liskeard School and Community College but lost out by a narrow margin of just 6 points to Truro School in the final. The standard was extremely high with some outstanding performances against some very strong opposition. Well done Sofia, Lowenna, Hebby and Grace who were a credit to the school, even the organisers commented on how well they played. The PE Department have continued to run the successful Tutor Sports Programme this term, with different tutor groups being given the opportunity to get active in tutor time and compete against one another in friendly competition on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For this term, Year 9 were involved in Handball fixtures in the Sports Hall for the first half, and Year 10 were given the option to do Y-Ball fixtures. Students were also able to join Mrs Dove for yoga on a Thursday morning. Monday mornings were reserved for Girls’ Active in the Sports Hall with Mrs Case. The response to the programme has been extremely positive with up to 60 Key Stage 3 students being ‘active’ in each session.
