orn between two worlds is the story of my life. Everyone has a torn moment in his/her life, but it seems I am always stuck in one for some (divine I hope) reason! A strong believer that God has laid out a good path for me whatever comes along, I come to terms easily with my fate. But it’s tough…it takes time to adjust. This one was not easy. Struggling to accept was the toughest part, I could not see myself anywhere but in Cairo, doing the exact things I love to do. I hate planes, couldn’t see me a frequent flyer either. Leaving parents, work, friends and family for long durations was never my plan. But I have learned the hard way; there are things in life you cannot change, you just have to accept them the way they were destined for you.
I have come to terms with the situation at hand now, after some time. I run around Cairo like crazy when I am there and enjoy London when I am here. I believe God has given me the peace and serenity, which I urgently needed to distress my life. I was a ticking bomb. I enjoy London very much, but Egypt is my only true love, difficult, as it may seem!

HOW TO...
HOW TO DEAL WITH THE SUMMER HEAT AND THE ELECTRICITY CUTOUT
H
ot summer days are already in, reaching a whooping 40 degrees or more on certain days! As if that was not enough suffering, we also have to deal with the power cutouts with no fans, air-conditioning, or anything that could possibly help us get over the heat wave. Here are a few tips and tricks to deal with his situation.
DRESS COOL Avoid any fabric that locks in sweat, it will cause you to slowly stew in your clothes. Wear lightweight loose-fitting clothes, preferably cotton; it’s perspiration gives a cooler evaporative effect.
KICK IT OUT As crazy as it may sound, keep your windows closed if they are only getting in hot air. Keep the hot sun out with drapes, blinds, or shades, do that before the sun really gets to shine its hot blazing rays into your house. Pay special attention to windows on the western and southern sides of your home, they are the hottest and the meanest of them all. Don’t forget to open the windows in the evening to allow ventilation and a cool breeze to enter the house. GO GREEN If you place large houseplants in front of the sunny windows, they will absorb some of the sun’s energy and leave your house a bit cooler. COOL KISSES A wet towel, some ice cubes, or a cold press, and bags of frozen vegetables can do wonders. Placing them on your neck, wrists, or armpits will help cool you down big time. The trick is to apply coolers as close to your blood vessels as possible. GET WET If you have a pool or live by the sea then jump right in! Alternatively you can have a cold shower or bath. Not only will you instantly feel refreshed, even when you are out, the evaporation of the water off your skin will further cool you down. STAY WET Drinking loads of water or a cold cocktail cools your body. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. GET A NEW BEST-FRIEND Get a rechargeable portable fan. Consider getting different sized ones, one to cool down your room, and the other to stick right to your face! Moving air is cooler air, so keep it moving! INVENT AN AIR-CONDITIONER Place a bowl of ice or anything frozen in front of your fan, it will further cool the air blowing out of your fan.
USE YOUR OPPONENT’S POWER Consider solar powering your house and get that airconditioner working. It can even help you save money on the long run. AVOID, BUT DON’T STARVE Digesting food takes energy and generates heat. If you must eat try to indulge on cold foods rather than hot ones. DON’T GET COOKIN’ Don’t cook inside, instead use an outdoor grill or camping stove to avoid heating up your kitchen, which will heat up your house. If you can’t cook outdoors, then cook early in the morning or late at night. GET DOWN If you do have a basement you may want to make it your new hang out place, it is usually the coolest place in the house. SPICE IT UP Eat something spicy hot, it will stimulate the heat and pain receptors in your mouth, enhancing blood circulation, inducing sweat, which will cool down the body. Tea can also induce sweat. FOOL YOUR SYSTEM Mint, lemongrass, coriander and turmeric can fool your body into feeling cooler.

LOVE ADVICE
IS IT JUST A FLING?! Dear Miss Fling, How do you see your life in the coming 10 years? Do you see yourself in a house with a man you know and feel comfortable with and around? Do you see yourself pregnant? Do you see yourself happily “serving” your kids? Do you see yourself aging gracefully? Or do you see yourself forever young, youthful, pretty, sexy, and free? Do you see yourself reaping the fruits of passion from one lover to the other? How do you want to live your life? The answer to these questions will determine the route you take. Five years in a relationship is a long time and it certainly gets boring! Too much is taken for granted and everything has settled into your comfort zone. The fling is certainly refreshing! We are human and we all long for those butterflies in the stomach and the weakness in the knees … we love hunting and enjoy being hunted down but very few of us could live like that forever! Most of us would get consumed by the intensity of relationships and the heartache that comes with love and breakups. Most of us – at a certain point in our lives – would just want peace!
I am in a relationship of five years now. We had our ups and downs and our “breaks” throughout the years of course. About a year ago, we had a big fight and decided to take a break. I traveled for a while and started a fling with another guy. It was the best month of my life. I felt alive! My fling asked me to be with him but I couldn’t since I was still in love with my partner. My partner and I got back together and it seemed the right thing to do. However, now I can’t stop thinking of my fling and how it made me feel! I started resenting my relationship and longing for passion. I am torn between picking companionship or passionate love…
Let’s assume that you walk away from your current relationship and that you would hook up with your fling guy. What next? After 5 years, the fling guy would no longer be as passionate and as exciting! He would be another steady stable comfortable relationship. What would you do then? Or would you make sure you have a fresh supply of flings throughout your life? There is no right and wrong answer to all the questions I am asking because away from social norms and religious boundaries you are truly free to live the life you want and to pursue the fantasies that suit you the most. Do not let social pressures inhibit you while making up your mind. You might lose a steady stable relationship which is the ultimate dream of many women but then again you might win the woman you deserve to be.

PAMPER YOURSELF
WAKE UP AND ENERGIZE YOUR MORNINGS! Many people feel at a loss of energy despite having a good night’s sleep. In order for you to feel more energized and make the most out of your mornings, follow these simple steps for the maximum energy optimization.
1.
BREAKFAST: it is necessary in lowering stress and giving you the energy you need. Don’t skip it! If you don’t have time for a meal, go for a healthy fruity shake. Great options include cereal or granola, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, fruits and vegetables.
QUICK EXERCISE: do a few jumping jacks and sit ups right when you wake up. Your body will be pumped and you will feel more energized instantly. Don’t go hard at it, do it with ease.
2.
6.
5.
STOP DRINKING COFFEE DAILY: that will accustom your body to the caffeine intake and it will get used to waking up with the morning coffee. Reduce your coffee drinks and help your body wake itself up naturally.
WATER: drink a lot of it. During summer our bodies get dehydrated quickly because of the heat which could lead to feeling fatigued. Avoid that by making sure you get your daily intake of water by drinking it or eating fruits like watermelon with high water content.
3.
AVOID HEAVY MEALS BEFORE BED: spicy, creamy and heavy meals will be hard to digest and won’t make it easy for you to fall asleep at night. Make sure to stop eating 2-3 hours before sleep.
7. 4.
STOP HITTING SNOOZE: get up right when the alarm rings, stretch your arms and take a deep breath and start your day! Snoozing and going back to sleep will make you crankier as your sleep will be shallow and disrupted every few minutes.
20 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
LISTEN TO BUDDHA: be grateful for not dying. Every time you go to sleep, there is a chance you won’t wake up. If you look at it this way, you will be grateful you are awake and instead of seeing the day as a burden, it will turn into an opportunity!

LUXURY TRIP
THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS YACHTS
STEVEN SPIELBERG’S “SEVEN SEAS”: The mega yacht was constructed to Spielberg’s specifications. It boasts an infinity pool, fully equipped gym, a helipad, a private deck and of course a crew of 26 to run the ship and cater to guests. This is the cheapest yacht on this list only for $200 million.
The richest have a lot of privileges, the most important of which is the ability to buy pretty much anything they want. Summer houses in every continent, mega mansions, private jets and even islands! If they can’t afford an island, they can go for a man-made version: the luxury yachts. Take a look at these super yachts and dare to dream!
SHEIKH MOHAMED AL MAKTOUM’S “DUBAI”: $350 million worth of wonder. The mega yacht has a helipad, a swimming pool and spa. It has been called the floating city because it contains nearly everything a person could ever want or need. ROMAN ABROMOVICH’S “ECLIPSE”: this 528 foot yacht has two helipads and a mini submarine. This is considered the world’s most expensive yacht coming in at $800 million. It has its own defence system, an intruder detecting system and the ability to detect and block paparazzi cameras.
SHEIKH KHALIFA BIN ZAYED’S “AZZAM”: one of the largest yachts in the world and even larger than some cruise ships, the Azzam is valued at $627 million (just a 3.5% of the sheikh’s net worth). It took four years to get built and is rumoured to have up to 50 private suites.

HOME TIPS
QUICK SAVES!
Get out of sticky situations… PHONE FELL IN WATER: Whether you are clumsy or have an annoying friend that pushed u in the pool with your phone in your pocket. Don’t panic, it’s not a death sentence for your phone. Stop trying to see if it is working or not, it will make it worse. Just remove the battery quickly and dry it out as much as you can. Use a sandwich plastic bag, fill it up with uncooked rice (or those silica gel packets we always throw away) and put the phone inside. Leave it in a warm place for 24 hours and hope for the best!
ICE YOUR DRINKS QUICKLY: Didn’t have time to cool the drinks before guests arrive at your cool summer party? No worries! Just place the cans in a steel pot and cover them completely with ice. Fill the pot with water and add two cups of salt. Stir the mixture for a couple of minutes then leave it in the freezer for three minutes and you’re done. Ice-cold drinks for everyone!
FORGOT THE SPEAKERS? Use this trick to increase the sound of your phone by placing it in a bowl. Yes, just a bowl and the sound will be amplified enough for you to dance away. It really is as simple as that.
IF YOU CAN’T FIND THE WINE OPENER… Don’t go for the break technique just yet. Put the bottle in a shoe and start banging it horizontally against the wall till the cork pops! A classic men’s leather shoe with a small heel will be the most effective.

HEALTH MATTERS
TRENDING: BEING HEALTHY OR ACTING HEALTHY?
As human beings we tend to always aim to be different and yet try to belong at the same time. This reflects in trends in general, the latest and most relevant to us is ‘healthy living’ or ‘fitness’. The industry is booming worldwide with alternative fitness training, food & beverage and online support. It’s in your local supermarket, your Instagram account and the nearest compound, club and park. Since fitness, wellness, health and well-being have a positive image to them, people are responding with an open heart. Pushing themselves to be called athletes, fitness enthusiasts and health freaks. But just like any other trend this too will fade, this too will die. 28 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
T
he main problem with a dying trend is what follows; it’s like the silence before a storm. Some will preach to stay healthy and fit but the majority will be re-directed to a new trend, something that makes them feel good about themselves in a way fitness doesn’t. I am writing this to connect with you about the real meaning of wellness and the real reason why you should opt for wellness. Forget fitness for a while, and lets think together of what being ‘well’ really means. WELL-BEING a good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity; welfare:
To be well you need to decide that this is forever, this is your lifestyle, this is who you want to be. The first step -with the summer coming up- is feeling satisfied with how you look, being comfortable in your skin. You can try to improve your physique, you can try and look better in a bikini and if you work hard you will but you have to decide to be comfortable anyway. Why? Because this is who you are today, you should embrace your body and mind. Always opt for a better version of yourself tomorrow, but be 100% confident with who you are today. Summer has always been a season for selfdoubt, and the most beautiful women on the beach (with fitness trending or not) have always been the most confident ones. So instead of falling into this trend’s trap, take a leap of faith and decide to be well. Decide to have a happier more stable life. Work hard on being who you really are, whatever that may be. For those who find living healthy a burden, It doesn’t have to be. Take advantage of this amazing trend and learn how to enjoy being healthy. Find recipes that satisfy your sweet, fatty and insanely big tooth. Find alternatives to your unhealthy habits. Today, you can easily be healthy, happy and content. You just need to look around and learn.
29 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
For those who really enjoy fitness, those who go willingly to the gym and sweat their hearts out. The only way this will always be your positive happy get-away is if you forget about targets like looking x or y and focus on enjoying the ride. Everyone wants to look good, that’s a given. But YOU, you love fitness; you do it for you. Enjoy the fact that this is who you are, let this sink in. When the trend dies, you’ll be the girl that has always been fit. At the end what really matters is your happiness. Everything else will follow, so just be happy. Find what triggers this earto-ear smile and do it. Make the best out of everything and anything around you. Talk to your friends and family about how you want to live your life, what matters to you and what makes you happy and encourage others to do the same. Go ahead and #SpreadTheWellness because you can.
Be well. Be happy. Be confident. Most importantly, be yourself.

7 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY IN A FIGHT!
“I’m not upset” Really? If you are not upset, then why are you making snappy remarks, slamming the door, putting your partner down and pretending that he does not exist? It’s better to talk about what’s bothering you and try to control your emotions.
“It’s all your fault!” Come on! We all know it’s rarely one partner’s fault in a relationship. It’s not fair to put all the blame on them; recognize your own faults and mistakes as well.
“Everyone warned me about you” Then why are you dating them? If you chose to neglect all the bad comments your friends and family said about your partner, then it’s all on you now. You’re the only one to blame.
“You did the same thing last time” Every couple argues, but these words will turn a spat into an all-out-war. Some things are really better left unsaid.
“We need to talk” If you do need to talk, it should be, “Can we talk?” It’s an invitation to discuss, not a declaration of war.
“You’re just like your father/mother” When you say this, you are probably talking about your fatherin-law’s bad traits, rather than his good qualities. Besides not seeing your partner for who he really is, this type of statement will immediately make him take on the defensive.
30 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
Little fights and arguments become big ones when we bring them up over and over again. Let go of all your previous fights and concentrate on the present and the future.
“You always…” This is a very selfish thing to say. You want to have them understand how the pattern of what they do or say impacts you and the relationship so that together you can change it.
INTIMACY
IT’S JUST TOO SMALL!!
Size matters. Whether people admit it or not, it does! Which would you prefer a small soda cup or a big one? A small portion at a restaurant or a big one? A small house or a huge mansion?! Unless you are Thumbelina, you probably preferred the bigger of everything. What happens when this rule is applied to our bodies? It is a known fact that men are self conscious when it comes to… well, size! Women are too! Many women feel very self conscious about the size of their breasts –including those that are too large- and with swim suit season upon us, the problem is even worse. If you feel that way then these tips are for you to read…

WORKOUT YOUR PECS: Doing regular push-ups can make your breasts look firmer and rounder. Don’t work on your lower chest muscles as it will make them look smaller. Just the pectorals (upper chest muscle).
THE RIGHT BRA SIZE: Most women don’t measure right and wear the wrong bra size. This can cause discomfort and won’t flatter your breasts. The bra should sit well beneath your breasts and cup it closely.

5. WEAR IT RIGHT: Avoid plunging
necklines and tight-fitting clothes, obviously they will show what you don’t have. Dark trousers with horizontal stripes will make your hips look narrower and breasts larger in comparison. 31 IDENTITY JUNE 2014

EASY REMEDIES FOR SUN-BURNT SKIN We have certainly all been there. Staying in the sun and roasting like chickens for 5 or 6 hours straight and then it’s not so fun anymore! The low SPF tanning oil is never enough, so make sure to pack proper SPF lotion or oil and try to avoid harsh sun exposure (10 am to 3 pm). Got burnt already? Let’s get down to business…
1.
Add baking soda to cool water and enjoy a 10-15 minutes soak. You can also use oatmeal and add half to one full cup and mix in the tub. Avoid drying skin with a towel and avoid oils, bath salts or bubble baths.
2.
Chill your moisturizer in the fridge and apply it right after a soak to cool the skin and rehydrate it.
4.
Mash cucumbers and potatoes. Use either in a blender and apply the paste to your skin several times a day for the best effect.
5.
Dip cloths in cool water and pat your skin with it through-out the day.
3.
Aloe Vera gel does wonders! Apply it frequently to relieve the pain and soothe the skin.
35 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
6.
Avoid soap as it will irritate and dry the skin even more.
7.
Get a lotion, spray or ointment with 1% hydrocortisone to relieve the pain and swelling.

WEAR: Opt for something shiny, whether a sequins top or a metallic one, and wear it with a boyfriend jeans. This outfit will make you look and feel sexy.

WEAR: A high-waisted bikini
under a printed kimono. Add some nice sandals, beach bag and accessories to complete your outfit.

FASHION QUESTION
WHICH SWIMSUIT STYLE WOULD YOU LIKE
1 The caged bikini
2 The one-piece
3 The push-up bikini
“I’d like to see girls in bandeau bikini because it’s a bit sexy and a bit cute at the same time... the girl wearing it is not trying too hard to look sexy like for ex. in a caged bikini and is not too conservative like for ex in a one piece.”
“Monokini then caged, respectively. Monokinis are very enticing and are like the “soiree dresses” of beach wear (in my very abo gahl opinion tub3an) hahaha. And I like the caged one because it’s still not that popular yet.”
– Seif Abdel Nour
– Gamal Kharma
“Option 1 is super sexy; needs guts and the perfect body for it. Option 2 is classy and cool. 5 is popular so I would like to see girls doing some effort; guys have been trying to have an athletic shape so make some effort too. Finally, the 6 options would all look great honestly.”
“Kol eli yegeebo rabena kwayes except the monokini. Ba7es nazla el ba7r with a t-shirt ma2too3 meno 7etta!”
–R a fi k Morcos
– Tamer Banna
“Number 5, the bandeau bikini. It shows how fit a girl’s body is. I find it decent yet sexy at the same time.”
“1 is slutty. 2 James Bond style. 3 sex. 6 taleba fil madrasa 3andaha 17 sana. The rest are cute.”

TO SEE GIRLS WEARING THIS SUMMER AND WHY?
4 The monokini
5 The bandeau bikini
6 The tankini
“I prefer monokini and bandeau bikini. I really don’t know why I prefer these two. But the caged bikini… fetish keda na2so korbag. One piece , not very attractive. Push-up, depends on the girl wearing it; sometimes it’s too much and doesn’t look natural. Tankini, mesh me7asal 7aga; ba7eso t-shirt w 3aleiha slip.”
“The Caged Bikini is very kinky. Number 3 looks like underwear not a bikini. The rest are fine, they all look elegant.”
– Shady S. Lewis
–Mina Fahmy
“ 1 kharbesh. 3 betezlem nafsaha since people will never look at her face. I hate 2, 4 and 6. So I guess I’ll have to go with the bandeau bikini (bas lazem tekoon otta)”
–Ramez Youssef “I think it depends big time on the girl wearing the swimsuit and how her body looks. There isn’t one look that fits all figures. The new modern one piece swimsuit needs a very hot girl to be able to pull it off, so that she could make it look hotter than a bikini.”
–Ahmed Eid “1, 3 and 6 mashofhomsh 3al ba7r aslan yareit. 2, 4 and 5 peace. Actually 5 mesh peace awi.”
“Tankini is the shitiest invention ever. It’s just like a conservative bikini which doesn’t make much sense. I think the best two styles are number 3 and 2, but only if it’s worn on a perfect body. I actually like the caged bikini as well.”

L’AUTRICHIENNE 18TH CENTURY MODERN DAY COLLECTION
The 18th century fashion is known for its lavishness, using plenty of fabrics and endless floral prints. Mohanad Kojak , a young talented designer, photographer and stylist has just released his second collection “L’Autrichienne”; bringing back the elegant style of the 18th century into the modern day with a stylish twist. He managed to use prints, fabrics and simple designs to bring life to art –and allow you to wear it too- So far, Mohanad’s collection has been getting great reviews. We sat down with him to talk about the inspiration and the challenges behind “L’Autrichienne”…
52 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
WHAT WAS THE MAIN INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR COLLECTION? I have always admired the old furniture and paintings our parents used to have in our homes. I think the materials and the colours are very elegant. They just portray a certain class and I wanted to transform that vision to clothes because I felt like the materials and fabrics used now are not elegant. That’s when I decided to use old fabrics and prints which I later learned they were all inspired by the 18th century. The collection is named after Marie Antoinette’s nickname “L’Autrichienne”. SINCE THIS IS YOUR FIRST COLLECTION, WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED? Actually this is my second collection! I did a black and white collection last year and I launched in an episode during the TV show El Mashrou’. The challenge is always the same with every collection, finding good quality fabrics and dealing with them the best way possible. Fabrics can’t always be accustomed to your own vision; they have their own personality so you must learn how to work them. On a personal side, it was challenging because I had to balance between university, work and making this collection so it was very stressful. YOUR CHOICE OF FABRIC IS UNCONVENTIONAL! TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CHOICE OF FABRIC… Yes, I loved choosing unusual and challenging fabrics that would inspire people, tell them a story and take them to a whole different era and culture. The fabric is actually used in home furniture for sofas, armchair and even wall decorations. I loved the fact that most of us would have seen this fabric at out grandparents’ but we never thought that this could be wearable and very practical. WHEN YOU DESIGNED THIS COLLECTION, WHAT TYPE OF PERSON DID YOU HAVE IN MIND? WHO IS THIS COLLECTION FOR? I wanted to offer a different kind of dress for girls, everything that is offered now is for parties or for weddings and engagement. There is very little availability for dresses that girls can just wear while going out to an event, or for a special occasion. That’s why most of the collection is a two piece dress so they can just mix and match pieces together. I found it more practical this way and it gives them more space to see what suits their personality. IS THIS A CONCEPT COLLECTION OR IS IT FOR SALE? Well, it’s both. I wanted to tell a certain story through this collection, which is the fabric and how hard it is to find different materials and fabrics in Egypt which restricts designers to use the customary ones. The collection sends a message which is you don’t have to stick to a certain criteria; find something that speaks to you and make it work. Also, it’s wearable and practical so it’s not a piece of art that you just watch. I’m in talks with a few boutiques now, I must admit I have been getting a lot of support considering this is only my second collection and I’m just excited to find the best store that speaks the same language as I am. WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE SHOOT AND WHAT DID YOU WANT IT TO REFLECT? The shoot is meant to portray the previous generations of women with braids and head accessories. It was a cosy shoot. I wanted the models to live the experience of going back to the old days where women wore something that made them feel good around the house; not for the purpose of showing off. 53 IDENTITY JUNE 2014
