HOW TO DEAL WITH YOUR HAIR IN THE

SUMMER HEAT by Amina Moustapha

When I hear the word summer, bright skies, buzzing beaches and rainbow-like swim suits pop right into my head, but if you want my hairs’ say on this, I bet it will be at odds with me. My hair thinks heat and humidity are two bullies who always team up to stress it out, and stop it from maintaining any bounce or style. The following tips and tricks have come to save the day and leave your hair healthy no matter how high the temperature hits. 1. DON’T OVER WASH IT In the hot summer air, your scalp and strands tend to feel dryer, leading you to feel like you need to wash and condition your hair more frequently. That’s a fatal mistake. Over washing strips your scalp of its natural protective oils, leaving it vulnerable to damage. Try just rinsing your hair in the shower after a day at the beach or pool, no need to double up with shampoo. Look for products that give all-important UV protection to stop sun from playing havoc with your hair.

4. CHOP YOUR HAIR TO HELP IT GROW FASTER Never underestimate the power of a good trim. Experts generally recommend getting rid of your split-ends every six to eight weeks for maximum hair health; the summer usually requires more frequent trims. Going short for the summer is practical and refreshing; lop off some locks every three to four weeks so you hair grows out seamlessly.

5. AIR-DRY, NOT BLOW-DRY Summers are the perfect time to give the blow dryer 2. GET THE TAN BUT ADD HAIR SUNSCREEN a break. During this season, you should let go of You have all the right in the world to have that sun- perfect, polished hairdos and embrace that loose, kissed glow, but a day at the beach or laying poolside natural look. Hair sunscreen is a must have;w they come in making your hair rough, dull and more susceptible the form of sprays, leave-in conditioners or other to damage. Reduce this heat by removing your hair styling product options. Not only does this provide dryer and air-drying your hair as much as possible. extra UV protection, but it also helps your scalp to maintain moisture. 3. GIVE YOUR HAIR A BREAK FROM CHEMICALS Most shampoos include harsh, drying sulfates that are exceedingly damaging for your hair, so let’s not add insult to injury. During the summer, use baking soda, apple-cider vinegar in place of shampoos. These chemical free alternatives will cleanse the hair just as effectively without stripping it of moisture, while improving your hair’s health. 18 Identity July 2016

ULTIMATE PACKING GUIDE If you have certain hair rituals that you need to go through, make sure you have access to any products or tools you need to handle your hair while travelling. You can do this by either taking them with you or making sure you can buy them at your destination. If you plan on taking products with you from home, use travel- size containers to avoid lugging around huge bottles of shampoo or serum.

WHY SEA WATER IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU! by Alia Elsaady

The sea is where we go to unwind and give ourselves a break from our hectic city lives. A lot of the time, we head to the beach in the hopes of getting a nice tan, while relaxing and having some fun in the sun with family and friends. But what we don’t realize is that there are a lot of health benefits associated with going to the beach. So before you slather on that over-priced tanning oil, take a look at why sea water is actually the only thing you’ll need at the beach for perfect skin and general well-being!

SKIN

University found that regular immersion in water Sea water is rich in magnesium, which has been could lower heart-rate and calm people down in known to promote skin hydration and improve its general. appearance. IMMUNE SYSTEM

Sea water is rich in all kinds of essential elements, not just magnesium but potassium and iodine as well. When we swim, our pores open up and absorb these beneficial elements while cleaning it from toxins. Another important characteristic of sea water is that it’s full of negatively charged hydrogen ions. When you inhale sea mist, you’re actually boosting your immune system because of the anti-oxidant abilities of those ions.

BACK AND JOINT PAIN

When we’re floating in seawater, it almost feels as if we’re light as a feather. Because of the uplift of the water and its ability to make you float when you’re swimming, there is less friction between your joints. Lying with your back straight on the water could greatly relieve any back or joint pains.

WELL-BEING

In the past, seawater was believed to have numerous healing properties. In fact, there was an actual term for sea water treatment called ‹Thalassotherapy›. The ability to heal and improve general health is not only limited to the skin or immune system but also extends to the relief of psychological and emotional stresses. TANNING MYTHS by Youssef Abdelmotaal

Tanning traditions, triggered by the repetition of summer routine, move around some fictitious tanning myths and routines we believe in and strongly enact upon each tanning session. As a trustworthy society, we disagree to disbelieve any informative tips we hear. We get so affected by our surrounding environment, thus, if our friends start tanning with sunglasses, we will probably do the same too. However, it is time to stop and revisit some of the tanning myths we believe in. Here are some of them:

One of the most common tanning myths that also travels around the tanning session is the harmfulness of sunscreens, claiming it contains toxics. Sunscreens have been on the market since scientists have started researching skin cancer, and they are not toxic. Sunscreens help reflect UV rays rather than let them penetrate your skin. Some sunscreens contain oxybenzone, which is a chemical that helps absorb UV rays. role that lying plays in our everyday lives, researchers have investigated why we lie and the clues that indicate that someone is lying to us. Lying is not always accompanied by malevolent intentions. Sometimes, we lie to protect the feelings of people who care about us. Researchers suggest that 25% of our lies are actually intended to make another person feel better. For instance, you may not enjoy reading the transcript for your friend’s new novel about aliens who come to earth to join the circus, but by telling your friend that you liked the story you can boost their self-esteem and avoid hurting their feelings. Other times, we might lie because it is the easier alternative. For example, your mother might be angry if your bedroom is messy because you spent the day playing video games, but you can avoid that fight by telling her that you spent the day doing homework. Perhaps the social benefits of lying are related to the finding that outgoing, extroverted people are more likely to lie. Chronic or compulsive liars tend to be manipulative and strongly concerned with managing the impression that others have of them.

So how do we know when we are being lied to? There are many cues that indicate lying, although we must be careful about their interpretation. The presence of these signs do not always mean that a person is lying, but if many of these cues are present at the same time, there may be an increased chance that someone is lying. Someone who is lying will probably keep their story simple, but they may include justifications without your prompting. They are also less likely to use first-person words like “I” or “me”. by Kate Kerpez They may also demonstrate signs of anxiety or stress, The game ‘Two Truths and a Lie’ is a way for such as playing with their hair, avoiding eye contact strangers to get to know one another by stating or fidgeting. information is false.

Anyone who has played ‘Two Truths and a Lie’ knows how difficult it is to detect when someone is lying. Perhaps this is because we are all experts when it comes to lying. It is estimated that people tell approximately one or two lies per day. In general, people tend to lie in 25% of their social interactions. Although we may be experts when it comes to telling lies, the opposite tends to be true of our ability to detect lies. The average person can only accurately detect a lie 54% of the time. SHY...SO? by Marwa Rakha

Dear Marwa, I’m a shy 21-year-old girl who feels she doesn’t know how to make friends. I only had one friend whom I honestly don’t like that much but have no other alternatives. I don’t speak a lot and don’t think I’m interesting enough to anyone. Last year, I started dating a college colleague. He’s kind, supportive and is always physically or virtually there for me. He’s the only human being I interact with besides my family. The problem is, I’m travelling after the summer to do my masters degree abroad. DIFFERENT SWIMSUITS FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES by Nour Nader

SWIMMING If you’re planning on going swimming, there are a few things you need to keep in mind while picking a suit. The swimming suit should not be white or anything that goes transparent when it gets wet. If you really want to wear white, make sure it’s padded or has layers to avoid showing more than you want to share. It’s also good to keep note that having a comfortable swimming suit will help loads. You really don’t want to be wearing something that you constantly have to readjust!

30 Identity July 2016

CHILLING If you’re just planning to chill on the beach, your options are countless! Our suggestion is to pick something cute! That is really the only purpose the swimsuit needs to serve, make you look good! Pick out an adorable one with nice colours and totally rock that swimsuit!

TANNING A string bikini is probably the best solution for tanning. This is because you don’t want freaky tan lines from the intricate design on your swimsuit. It will make it harder to wear other clothes if your tan lines are too obvious. Another good option for tanning is the strapless bikini. This way, you avoid any tan lines on your shoulders and you can wear anything you want after.

WATERSPORTS If you’re going to be doing watersports, you need a swimsuit that keeps everything in place while still looking hot! The one piece swimsuit with a play on it is the perfect solution. You have the security of a sports swimsuit as a result of the thick straps and the circle neck line but also the flair of a cute bikini. Just make sure to pick a simple design that doesn’t have too many strings or accessories. July 2016 Identity 31

Fatma Hassan

interview by Alia Elsaady

In the world of professional modelling, a young up and coming Palestinian model is making huge strides in both the international and Middle Eastern spheres. Fatma Hassan, a model who’s worked for foreign as well as local designers, shares the fashion icon role models who inspired her and her journey into establishing herself in the modelling world.

46 Identity July 2016

How did you get started in modelling? I started modelling because many people told me that I’m tall and thin. I didn’t know where to start in Egypt until I searched and found Amina Shelbaya’s agency. She’s a former Miss Egypt and founder of a modelling agency and catwalk school. I auditioned and got accepted in the school. While studying to become a professional model, I auditioned for a fashion show and got accepted.

What was your first big break in the industry? All the photo shoots I made were unique and added to my experience. Modelling for French designer, Stefan Roland, had a huge impact on my career and was definitely a big step forward. I escorted him down the cat walk in a signature wedding dress of his design at the finale of his fashion show in Egypt. Did you ever imagine becoming a model? I never imagined being a model because I’m pretty shy around people; I’m more of a wallflower. Being a model and having people looking at me and the clothes I’m wearing while I’m on stage or facing a camera initially got me nervous.

and eventually finished the following night. We didn’t have any breaks. The trip, the preparations for the hair, makeup and photo shoot were all done in the span of 24 hours. What was your favourite shoot? There isn’t a specific photo shoot I like, but any photo shoot that’s strange or the clothes are unusual, where the makeup and hair are different is my favourite. I feel I perform better at these photo shoots than any other.

Do you do anything in particular to maintain your figure? (Diet/exercise etc.) How often? I eat healthy, but that’s something I did before What is your favourite aspect about modeling? becoming a model. Even if I stop modelling, I’m still My favourite aspect about modeling is having the going to eat healthy food. But if you want to know how chance to meet creative people whether they are I take care of my skin, I meditate every morning, sleep photographers, makeup artists, fashion designers and well and drink at least 4 large bottles of water per day. to have the chance to wear different kinds of clothes. My favourite designs are those that are unusual because a regular design can be worn by any other. If you weren’t a model, what would you want to do? As a model, an innovative design is something extra; Definitely an actress. I started taking acting workshops it lets me discover the different aspects of fashion, and testing myself in front of the camera. makeup, hair and styling. Do you have any upcoming projects? What is the most challenging aspect of modelling for I had a photo shoot about Middle Eastern and you? Egyptian women and how society is constantly The most challenging aspect or what I find difficult trying to suppress them. We did that in the form is when I have to do a photo shoot on a searing hot of a fashionable photo shoot. I also acted in three day and get asked to open my eyes in the blazing sun episodes in a series called Walad Fada that was to give the photographer that particular attitude he aired this Ramadan. It was a very cool character; I’m wants for the photo. waiting to hear feedback from viewers. Which celebrity models or international models do you admire and why? I love and respect Gisele Bündchen; I love her in photo shoots and on the catwalk. I admire her ability to balance work and social life. I resemble her in that aspect, plus we both come from households with no backgrounds in fashion. What is the longest photo shoot you had to do? I recently had a photo shoot in El Fayoum. We travelled at night, began shooting the next day continuously

What is your dream modelling job? (Which designer do you dream aboutmodelling for? I’ve always dreamed of working with Lagerfeld. He’s the head designer and creative director of the fashion house Chanel as well as the Italian house Fendi; he’s a brilliant man. We hope to see Fatma on the international catwalk soon, strutting away in an original Lagerfeld design.

THE PERFECT

BARBECUE by Youssef Abdelmotaal

BRAINSTORMING

Initially speaking, the brainstorming phase is the most important one because it’s the foundation on which you base decisions that will make planning much easier afterwards. Develop a strategy in order to create a coherent process of planning and ask yourself questions that can help you set your foot on track like “Where will I have it?” Spill your ideas onto a piece of paper and let your thoughts drain. Deciding upon the venue is really important, because accordingly you would ask yourself the next set of questions.

Summer has come. Beach times and sun tanning days are up ahead, but no summer is complete without a BBQ! Update your status to ‘Off to Sahel’ and follow this guide to hosting the perfect barbecue in your Sahel’s garden because nothing is more valuable than having good company, food and vibe. This guide will help you brainstorm, plan and execute. Before you proceed with reading, Whom will I invite to the barbecue? Friends, family take on what you like and discard what you don’t or both? positives and go for it. If both sides turn out almost equal, draw a Venn diagram and widen your horizons. It’s very important to determine your guests’ age group because as I’m sure you already know, venue and age are parallel on the satisfaction axis. For example, if you’re inviting children, you would need to be extremely careful in keeping them away from the grill. An open garden with no fence or an unfinished one might prove to be problematic. Offering a childfriendly alternative menu would also be a good idea.

Will you use plastic disposable plates, cups, forks and knives or will you access your own tableware? If you decided to go with disposables, head to their aisle. While shopping, add board games to your cart if you don’t already have some. Make sure you buy tea, coffee and sugar. Nothing beats an aromatic cup of tea after an amazing meal. Now, that the planning phase is done with, it’s time to execute.

EXECUTION

Execution requires a simple checklist that covers the final touches of your barbecue. Have you thought about the type of music you would be playing if you’re going to play any? Well, music is certainly one of the items that must be on your checklist. Somewhere on the list there should be hygienic utilities. Tissues, trashcans and cleaning towels are merely examples. You would want to be instantly ready for any stains or spills. Chairs and tables should also make it to the list under ‘set-up’; how would you set up the seating? Where will you place the grill? The set-up PLANNING is very important for the image, safety and quality of Moving on to the planning phase, if you haven’t the barbecue. Is there wind at night or in the morning that might cause restrictions on time? Keep all of this in mind before moving on to the planning phase.

Whatever you pick, make sure your car: a small empty Coleman icebox, and a small that it’s enjoyable and fills your free time. beach bag full of necessary beach supplies. The icebox can be pretty useful when you want to have beverages at the beach. You can purchase the beverages and ice at a super market minutes before you hit the waves and have them nice and cool all through the day! The beach bag will basically have all the things you usually take to the beach: Swimsuit, towel, swimsuit cover, sunscreen, tanning oil and a nice pair of sturdy flip-flops. The bag sure takes away all the trouble of packing beach items; now you don’t have to worry about forgetting anything because it’s all already in there! These two items don’t necessarily have to be in your car but anywhere where they are accessible and don’t take up space.

HAVE A BARBECUE

Here’s another thing we wish there was more of in the summer. Having a barbecue in the summer is pretty easy, and doesn’t require a lot of supplies. This can easily be done in your home, at a friend’s or family member’s home. Barbecues are awesome because they allow you to have a great meal, as well as provide you with a chance to reconnect with people and enjoy your time without having to break the bank.

ROAD-TRIPPING!

If you’re a big fan of the Red Sea region, this is definitely the thing for you! The road along the Red Sea coast is pretty interesting and full of different stops; there’s a lot to explore. Make an adventure out of it and make it a point to really enjoy what this country has to offer from its beaches, to its winding roads to its rickety old ghost towns across your way. End the trip in an area you favour like Gouna, Hurghada or Dahab and then head back whenever you feel ready.

TAKE UP A HOBBY

SHOP TILL YOU DROP!

Sometimes, we forget that summer is a whole other season altogether, especially in Egypt where we only have two modes for the weather: either hot or cold. So with that new season, we obviously need new clothes! You should make a point to treat yourself to all the things you need, not just when you travel abroad or before preparing for a trip. If you think a swimsuit looks good, buy it! If you like the way these shorts look on you, get them! Think of it this way, your summer has started and whether you’re travelling or not, you’re still on vacation. Why not treat yourself to the simple pleasures?

TAN WHERE YOU CAN!

In the days when summer gets mundane, and everyone is sporting a tan and I’m not, I like to remind myself that tanning is not a beach exclusive endeavour. It can be done by the pool at a hotel, or by your local club’s pool. It can also be done in the comfort of your own garden even when you don’t have a pool! Don’t limit yourself when vacationing to certain areas or spots. And remember to wear sunscreen!

GET THAT SUMMER BOD

When you find yourself itching to do something, working on getting a fit beach body can be just the thing you need. Exercise keeps your endorphin levels high, so you’ll not only be healthy but happy! Whatever you decide to do this summer, you should definitely grant yourself the opportunity to enjoy the entirety of it and not just the days when you’re travelling.

what your SUMMER VACATION DESTINATION says about you by Amina Moustapha

54 Identity July 2016

Every road we take in life has a tale to tell about us, about who we are, and who we will become after crossing it. The happiest of these roads are definitely the ones taking us on a vacation. Summer vacations are precious opportunities to escape the clutches of our strenuous world, to leave it all behind and just leap into freedom and have some fun in the sun. We all travel for dissimilar reasons. Some of us travel to spend time with their loved ones, others to indulge themselves in a good undisturbed nap on the beach. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that certain vacation destinations attract certain types of travelers. Each destination reveals something about its visitor; let’s see what your summer destination has to say about you.

THE NORTH COAST…THE ESCAPER

You want to put enough miles of salt water between you and the buzz of the city that flusters you. The blue whispers of the sea, days filled with bright skies, and sunset dreaming are in a few words your version of heaven and the perfect haven for you to clear your bustling mind. You love to spend your days at the beach enjoying the feel of the sand on your feet, the warmth of the sun and the sea breeze on your skin while reading a good book and drinking a refreshing smoothie. You’re an escaper; you take your job seriously to the point that you sometimes forget to rest. This vacation is your chance to put your feet up and recharge your battery. Eat. Beach. Sleep. Repeat.

EUROPE…THE PLANNER

You love treating and pampering yourself, therefore, you can’t call it a vacation unless a big cosy air plane heading to the old continent is involved. Though the logistics of planning a Europe trip may seem tedious or overwhelming, these facts won’t stand in your way. Experiencing the Spanish tapas, the piazzas in Rome or the rooftop terraces in Prague, will fire up the planner in you to take care of the details and engineer a well-designed holiday to Europe where you can spend more time staring at castles and men in kilts.

You can go nuts while wake boarding, sitting back and relaxing in Club 88 or enjoying live music in one of its many entertainment venues. You’re a dreamer who sets their heart on making their dreams come true, and El Gouna is a beautiful dream and a ravishing reality.

OBSCURE COUNTRY… THE ADVENTUROUS

You are the ‘close your eyes, spin the globe, point and go live your dream where your finger lands’ type of person. Your soul has wanderlust and your body isn’t strong enough to keep it in one place, so you follow your soul on a journey to an obscure country no one has ever heard of. You are no doubt a brave one, and a no newbie to travelling either. You’ve already backpacked your way around Europe and spent a summer studying in the US, but now your soul has an explore thirst, and you must feed it.

SAHL HASHEESH… THE THINKER

You’re someone with a highly developed intellectual mind, one whose profession involves mental activity. Vacation is your opportunity to connect your mind to a power supply and restore energy. For that reason, you head to Sahl Hasheesh. On the far side of the developed area, Sahl Hasheesh is cradled by unimpaired desert and rugged mountains, which serve as a stunning backdrop to the many riches offered from this preserved treasure. With its sensational atmosphere, this wondrous place is your fuel, and in the wake of this vacation, this head of yours will go back to work filled with thousands of ideas ready to see daylight.

SOMA BAY…THE DARING

Are you fearless, ready to face and endure the unknown and eager to the taste of risk? What else would drive you to wend your way to Egypt’s bestkept secret place if you weren’t the daring type? Diving, kite surfing, sailing and many more activities are on your checklist whenever you voyage to Soma Bay.
