Q&A Identity
After choosing the wrong career, the wrong subjects or the wrong sport, people will almost always feel depressed. This sometimes happens due to the stress of having to take a decision quickly. They might originally think that’s what they truly want but unfortunately, it turns out to be one big disaster. Once you recognize that’s not what you really desire and you don’t like your job, you can’t excel at work because you hate it, hate what happened and know that you won’t succeed no matter how hard you tried.
Q: If you get one do over, what would you do? A’s: “I would definitely change majors from pharmacy and bio-technology to something more fun like art or music.” – Mostafa “I would have considered being born in the first place.”- Ahmed “I would have considered immigrating a long time ago.” – Rola “I would have postponed my marriage due its many responsibilities.” – Sandy “I would choose to invest more time developing the things that I love to do, and not letting the world choose for me.” – Youssef “I would have changed university and gone for a more sophisticated major like computer science.” Reham “I would definitely go back and practice horse backing riding and never change my goal no matter what people say.” – Habiba “I would not want to repeat my dramatic life or any of my decisions again. Just the thought of it, not even one!” – Ragui “I would have changed my car before the devaluation without a doubt!” – Hamdy “I would have had more fun when I was just a carefree kid with no obligations and relaxed a bit about studying.”- Alia 8 September 2017

Routine Took us for Granted by Marwa Rakha
Dear Marwa,
If you could imagine what a satisfactory relationship is, that would have to be what I’m currently in right now! Like most long-term relationships, ours has recently fallen into a mundane routine. A few weeks ago, I coincidently met my ex. I didn’t make much of it until he texted me a day later, saying he wants to catch up and I found myself neglecting the fact that I’m currently not single and started texting him happily. My unresolved feelings started to surface and I found myself fighting more often with my boyfriend. My recent lack of interest had taken its toll on our relationship. My question here is not whether I was doing the right thing or not, I know I wasn’t! I’m just concerned that my actions mean that I’m not happy with my boyfriend and this little rebound experience is an eye-opener to maybe discover the truth and move on once and for all!
Seeing your ex, in this case, was the stone that created the ripples you needed. It could have been anything, or anyone else, a colleague, a client, who suddenly showed interest in you. It could be a total stranger complimenting you in the right way at the right time. It was bound to happen. If you are looking for lessons to be learned, here they are: Avoid the rut and work on exploring new fun things together. Work on adding spices to your relationship; little hidden notes, cute sexy surprises, maintaining a balance between being too available and too unreliable. Plan for your future together and move ahead with these plans.
Here is a quote from one of my previous replies: “A relationship also hits stagnation when it does not move forward; you need to always be busy doing something together. Some people get busy planning their wedding, buying furniture, decorating, looking into Dear Wondering, Relationships are full of pitfalls and hidden traps; the one honeymoon destinations. Others are great at creating you slipped into is called “taken for granted”. Without any dreams together; saving street children, educating ill intentions from your side, you took yours for granted. villagers, rescuing street animals. When a couple reach a stable kind of relationship, one or both of them tend to take the stability and their partner There are also those who start a business together and those who have kids together. As long as you dream and for granted. grow together, then you will overcome boredom.” Right after, the need for adventure kicks in. This need is not as straightforward as it sounds. It manifests itself in many forms; a sense of restlessness, or a feeling of boredom. It could be an inexplicable sense of yearning, or being overwhelmed with nostalgia. In many cases, it is just the feeling of routine.
10 September 2017
Your little rebound is not a sign that you are in the wrong relationship; it is the sign that you just need to make your current relationship more exciting and alive. Let it grow and grow with it, and pretend that your rebound never happened. Forgive yourself, and move on.

HOW TO DOCUMENT YOUR
memories by Rana Assem
C
reating memories is what makes us all humans. Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to document them. Even though the human brain can do the job perfectly, but it can never remember all the tiny details. This is why documenting memories is the safest way possible. 1. WRITING A DIARY This is the oldest way of documenting memories and probably the easiest one. All you need to have on you is a notebook and a pen. You can carry it around everywhere and jot down your thoughts and feelings or describe an event any time of the day. 2. STARTING A BLOG This is the newest trend and you can never lose the information because it’s saved in a data form. Blogging is easy because you can update it regularly. If you’re sitting by the beach, you can just capture a nice photo and upload it to your blog with a catchy caption.
4. CREATING HOME MOVIES This requires someone walking around with a camera and filming everything. It’s the same process like taking a photo, where you can export the video to the laptop and then save it on a flash memory. This form of documentation allows us to witness the same memory and stir up the same feelings. 5. MEMFY This is basically an electronic journal. Similar to blogging, your information can be safely kept and protected. You can document your memories by writing about the moment you want to remember and then posting a photo if there’s one.
3. TAKING A PHOTO It’s a way of documenting and saving memories forever. When you take a photo and save it, it can then be To sum it up, it’s always great to document your moved to your laptop or a flash memory for backup. memories because they always bring up the same old feelings when you see them again.

Our Editor in Chief Shares Identity
moments by Mostafa Hesham
Twelve years already! I still find it hard to believe that my baby is almost 12. From vision to reality, this place has evolved before my own eyes to become what I would call a true ambassador of the Egyptian fashion world. To be honest, I’m still quite overwhelmed with the level of heights this place has reached and proud of both its successes and failures along the way. For years, this place has been facing a lot of challenges and celebrating a lot of huge achievements as well. Throughout all the milestones, we have met a lot of inspiring people and collaborated with incredibly impactful firms, which we would without a doubt call our friends, if not family. Over the years, my Identity team has become my family and my readers have become my team. I come to work everyday with the same goal, meeting their expectations, if not exceeding them and presenting what I believe is uniquely tailored to suit all ages and all styles. Here I share the 12 significant moments in the Identity lifetime, which will always make me feel nostalgic whenever they come to mind! Sep 2005 - Sep 2006: Our first year was one I could never forget! Seeing Identity for the first time on the cover had to mean something. One can only imagine how challenging it was to set Identity on the publications map and learn the challenges of the field so quickly.
2008-2009- The Economic Crisis: All our readers working then would relate to the size of the crisis all businesses in Egypt had to face. What I recall is how challenged we felt at the time, but again how it has helped us work harder and drive more powerful output to sustain where we stand! 2009: My Favourite Shoot So Far, with Haifa Wehbe in 2009The best thing for an editor when shooting with a celebrity is to find a celebrity who shows up on time, knows how to pose and collaborates with the shoot team. The output of our Haifa shoot as you can imagine was flawless. Bottom line, we wish Middle Eastern celebrities were always more punctual, capable and collaborative in any shoot to be honest, but we can understand! 2010: The Low Staff Issue- That year caught us by surprise when suddenly a big number of our staff quit and we found ourselves running the whole show with the least number of team members you can think of. We’ve been through tougher situations but we managed, so it wasn’t that hard to get over that specific obstacle!
2011: The Revolution and the Shift in Trends in the Egyptian Community- What I love the most about that period is how we adapted, and of course the very close to my heart special pamphlet called ‘Al Seyasy’ which was a Late 2006 - The Screwed-up Shoot: pamphlet released with our monthly issue and tackled The sitcom Tamer w Shawkeya was making it big at the political platform back then. the time and we wanted to feature the whole cast, so we arranged for a shoot and then got unpleasantly 2012: surprised by the absence of the whole cast on the When Mohamed Morsi became the Egyptian president, shooting day except for one actress. We had to cancel speculations spread that the Egyptian media would everything and lose a lot of money in the process. perish and freedom of speech will no longer exist. We started operating cautiously, but the reality was different and we managed to coexist. 16 September 2017
2013: When digital media was introduced to the Egyptian market and people were shifting to social media for entertainment, we had to find a way to keep ourselves in the loop. We started a new online platform called Identity 3al mashy, and it took us a long time to analyse how people deal with digital media.
has been English. I wasn’t sure Arabic would fit into our readers’ segment or if it would even distort our image. What I learnt later on is that it’s more about what you present rather than how you present it. The Arabic addition was a huge success and remains one of our most powerful online tools till now. 2017: Dealing with a new wave of economic instability, yet another year of trying to keep afloat through a lot of uncertainties. Will the print survive or diminish with the growing fast pace we are all encountering? Will social media finally dominate the market? Yet to be discovered!
2014: As always, Identity is keen on exploring and introducing new talents which we believe will make it big. In 2014, we had a hunch about Sharmoofers-one of many featured along the years- who were on the edge of becoming famous. We featured them for our shoot, and it still makes us proud that they actually did stand out and become one of Egypt’s lead bands today. To keep it short, the list of significant memories is endless. Every day is significant in this place. We come 2015: to the office and literally work as hard as we can to Our 10 year anniversary which we decided to celebrate keep up with the fashion circus out there. A huge thank big! We arranged our decade party at GuBar and you note to whoever helped us reach where we are invited a lot of our friends and clients. The party was today or even challenged us to get there. We believe huge and we were extremely happy to see the amount that hard work definitely pays off, and along that long of people who loved our magazine and were keen to road we sometimes stumble but we always manage to attend our party. The night was unforgettable and the stand up again stronger than ever before. That’s basically anniversary issue remains one of our very best in terms how we remain on top of the game for 12 years now of content and design. and counting! 2016: Introducing Arabic language to Our Blog- Ever since we launched our online platform, our universal language

People view Shereen Reda as a rebel, is that true?
What do you prefer working on the most, a film or a TV show?
“You should be who you want to be at all times! That’s how I see it.”
“Filming movies is every actor’s main passion.”
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? “Basically everything!” We’ve heard you like pets in general, how would you comment to that? “I have 14 cats and dogs, all rescued! I literally would save all stray dogs and cats if I could. To be warmhearted and compassionate knows no boundaries, and I always start to try with myself and animals in specific.” Is there a role that you still wish to play? “A role of a man, because it would be really hard for a woman and a challenge for the people to accept the concept, and I want to do that to my audience.” What piece of advice would you like to share with young actresses kicking off their acting career? “Be yourself and make sure your ultimate goal is to make your talent shine, not your looks!” Any upcoming projects you’re working on right now that you’d like to share? “I’m finally off for some time!”
Based on your experience with Nour Alsherif, would you say that he’s influenced you in any way? “I think I get my workaholic trait from Nour Alsherif. He was such a great role model. He used to really love his work. He would show up on time and do his work the best way that he could. He definitely set an inspiring example to all of us, and I’ve learned a lot from him.” How did your relationship with Kinda start? “There was no big story. We didn’t meet and click right away. My relationship with Kinda developed gradually. We’ve worked together a lot and became really good friends, and then our relationship gradually developed into marriage.” In the movie “Welad Rizk”, we’ve seen you in a different role, the rebellious Rabea, how would you say this role affected your work and your future plans especially since it was different from the role of “the good looking gentleman”? “I believe that it’s every actor’s goal to bring diversity to the roles he plays. Luckily, I’ve been able to do that in the past year where I managed to play a romantic role in “Hepta”, a comedy role in “Kedbet kol Youm” and a rebellious one in “Welad Rizk”. In general, the year 2016 has been really good to me. It helped me achieve the diversity I needed in my career”

BEST MAKEUP FOR YOUR AGE by Donia Assar
Makeup is the perfect example of a universal language that all women use and understand easily. It has been around for at least 6000 years and has always been ever changing and developing. Even though there aren’t any huge differences between all the various brands, choosing the perfect product for your age bracket is the best way to start using makeup. Looking for the most age appropriate makeup products can help with many things; for starters there are specific colours that should only be used for a certain age bracket. Some products lack the ingredients that your skin craves at a certain stage. So here we are cutting the chase and listing all the favourable products for our precious readers.
Rimmel London Wake Me up Concealer So simple, covers up blemishes and eliminates any under eye dark circles.

40s-50s This is the stage where you should give your skin a break and use the simplest products.
It Bye-Bye Under Eye AntiAging Concealer As we age, those dark circles under our eyes begin to show even more and here’s the perfect concealer coming to the rescue.
CLINIQUE Lash Power Mascara Long -Wearing Formula Long wear mascara that sticks for 24 hours lasting through rain, sweat, humidity and tears while also lengthening the lashes.

INNOVATIVE NAIL TRENDS by Habiba Kamel
Nail trends have developed and changed recognizably throughout the past couple of years. Women have always paid great attention to their nails and nail art; as some women love plain colours while others literally love painting and adding a new feel to their nails. Your nails not only show how feminine you are, but rather what type of lady you are.

Glitter nails is a fun nail innovation trend where glitter helps up your stressful work day. NEON TRIBAL NAIL ART Neon Tribal nail art is the best and most trending nail innovation this summer. It offers lots of colours with a wide variety of designs. You can choose and make you own design as well. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD? WHAT FIRST TRIGGERED YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? I was immersed in it since a very young age as I was brought up in a family that was heavily involved in the fashion and textiles industry in Egypt. My grandfather is a chemist who founded a vertically integrated business that does everything from weaving, to dying fabric and producing final garments. Similarly, my mom was also drawn to the fashion industry and followed in his footsteps by creating her own brands; ‘BTM, Marie Louis, Marie Bishara’ and many others. Not only did my mother create her own brands, but she and my family also manufacture and export garments for international high-end brands such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Our family also produces uniforms for luxury hotels and airlines.

When I got my acceptance letter, I showed it to my parents and succeeded to convince them to let me travel. Then I graduated from the International School of Creative Arts, being one of only two students in my entire graduating class to be accepted into Central Saint Martins, also known as “the Harvard School of Fashion”. I am really grateful and lucky to have been from the very few students who get accepted every year!

Spice Up
How to your Marriage by Sarah Sorour
Before we delve into this intriguing topic, it is important to know that when life gets in the way, couples need to redirect their energy towards doing things that would bring back the spark once more. You know you’re one of those people when you go through the motions of life instead of living life. Have you ever wondered how those who have been married for 40 years do it? How people can unconditionally love each other no matter what? We tend to get used to the new norm and forget what once made this relationship so great. Here’s a little tip: Bring happiness back. In other words, spice up your marriage! A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE Write down a list of your fondest memories that have left an impact on your relationship. Those moments that lead up to your marriage; like that coffee shop where you had your first date, that special meal that your spouse used to like so much, that place where you played paddle tennis, when you used to walk hand in hand on the streets of Cairo. This is plain and simple. Don’t dwell on your everyday problems. Whether it’s work-related or friendship-related. Couples tend to over dramatize situations by always complaining about temporary issues. Just get it over with and don’t let it interfere with your current emotional atmosphere. Instead, talk about the exciting or funny things that happened in your day. Share your secrets and feelings. Let the positivity outweigh the negativity.

Travelling
now and then by Rana Assem
Who doesn’t like travelling, honestly? Don’t we all just want to pack our bags and get on the road, or even better get on a plane? Starting from the road trip adventure to the fun relaxed days, the travelling experience has changed quite a lot. Here are some of the things that have changed from travelling earlier to travelling today:
1. SOLO TRAVELLING Coming from an Arab origin, we all remember how our trips always included many of our relatives. It’s like the family has accepted the challenge of how many family members you can fit in one trip. Luckily enough, solo travelling has become more popular today. It has become a lot easier to convince your family that it is okay to travel alone every once in a while without your seven aunts, uncles and their children. Solo travelling might not be very familiar, but it’s definitely becoming more popular these days. 2. INSPIRATION FROM BLOGGERS How many of us have seen astonishing photos of beaches and islands from all over the world on famous Instagram accounts and felt like they would do anything to go there? Bloggers around the world are rising in numbers inspiring us to travel more than ever before. Back in the days before the rise of social media, tourism was mainly advertised through TV or brochures, but it was not enough for people to travel like nowadays.
52 September 2017
5. ARE YOU REALLY AWAY FROM HOME WHEN YOU TRAVEL? 3. TRAVELLING HAS BECOME SO MUCH EASIER If you would think about the travelling experience before the internet became accessible to almost every person around the globe, the first question that crosses your mind would have to be how did people book their hotels back then? Or how did they find out about interesting places in their desired destinations? During those days, people booked their hotels either through visiting travel agents or independently through researching a guidebook and making an expensive international call. In places where technology was more advanced, people sent fax messages. Can you imagine how much of a hassle it was for someone to plan a trip? Today, it’s totally different and a lot easier. Numerous travel apps were created to help travellers book their flight, train ticket or hotel room.
Goodbyes at the airport were more real before. People did not know when or how they would stay in contact with the traveller but today the second you arrive at your destination airport, free Wi-Fi instantly connects you to your loved ones back home. Today, you virtually have your family and friends with you on your trip. Through Instagram, Snapchat or Skype, you let them vividly share your experience. 6.YOLO What was different back then was people’s desire to travel and explore new places. Apparently, it is now a trend to be a traveller and influence others to do the same under the motto of YOLO, You Only Live Once. 7. GETTING LOST IS NOT AN ISSUE ANYMORE
4. FINDING LUXURY IS NOT THE TRAVELLER’S Thanks to Google maps and other transportation MAIN CONCERN ANYMORE apps, you can now easily get information about your Most travellers nowadays are more concerned with whereabouts and the type of public transportation that exploring and visiting new places rather than looking for would be more convenient for you. It can also inform 5 star accommodations. The fun and trendy thing to do you about the schedule of the public bus or subway these days is to backpack and camp on the road. Even and at which station to get off.
though camps in Sinai, specifically in Dahab, have existed for years, they are now becoming increasingly popular. The travelling experience was not only different back As for people who enjoy travelling abroad, it is now in the day, but it was a lot more complicated to plan common to visit more than one country on a single trip. an adventurous trip. So the next time you don’t have a clue about what do on your vacation or free time, just book that plane ticket and get it going. September 2017 53

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO: A WALK THROUGH TIME by Amina El Ghandour
El Camino de Santiago or the Way to St. James was a popular network of pilgrimage trails in the Middle Ages that has become one of the top destinations for hikers and cyclists around the world today. The different trails from Spain, France or Portugal all lead to the shrine of St. James the Greatin Galicia, northwest Spain. Today, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which hosts the shrine, is the most impressive Romanesque monument in Spain. While in the Middle Ages people travelled these trails to reach the tomb of St. James seeking cures, blessings and cleansing their sins, today some still take up the trail looking for the spiritual experience while many others travel it to savour the beauty of nature, experience the culture and delve into the historical tales. How to get to the shrine of St. James?
54 September 2017
THE FRENCH WAY (780 kilometers) The French route is the most popular of all. Usually starts from St. Jean Pied de Port in the foothills of the Pyrenees in south-western France to the interiors of northern Spain, the French Way offers you all - vibrant cities, charming medieval towns, enticing landscapes and most importantly concludes with the historical shrine of St. James.
THE NORTHERN WAYÂ (830 kilometers) Less popular but equally charming is the Northern Way. This route runs from the Basque Country and along the northern coast of Spain and the mountains of Asturias. Most of the trail falls onto the coastline of the Cantabrian Sea with small fishing villages and rich seafood options. While historically this route was chosen to avoid territories under Muslim rule, today the Northern Way is the choice of sea lovers.
THE PORTUGUESE WAY (600 kilometers) For a different taste of el Camino de Santiago, try the Portuguese Way. From the Portuguese city of Porto, make your way through northern Portugal enjoying the blend of Roman ruins, Gothic architecture, Baroque designs, rural communities and local traditions and into the charming region of Galicia in northern Spain where the shrine of St. James awaits you.
THE PRIMITIVE WAYÂ (260 Kilometers) Sometimes it is referred to as the Original Way because this was the first route ever used by the medieval pilgrims for its natural protection. Today, the Primitive Way is there for those who are passionate about mountain hikes. Travelers cross the high mountains of Asturias savoring the beauty of nature until they reach the shrine of St. James.
THE SILVER WAY (1,000 kilometers) As for lovers of history, the Silver Way or the Via de la Plata, may be a good way to quench their thirst. Beginning in Seville in Andalusia, a city in south of Spain rich in history and culture, and ending at the shrine of St. James, the Silver Way generously offers a travel through time and across cultures. This route is as old as Roman times and merges with the French Way in its final part.
El Camino de Santiago has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO and the First European Cultural Itinerary. Whether you seek sports, nature or history or a spiritual experience, the Way to St. James is one journey through time that is worthwhile. September 2017 55

New General Manager for the Cairo Marriott by Karen Shawky
Cairo Marriott is not only getting a new and passionate General Manager, but also an entirely new look and feel. Who said that history can’t meet technology? A palace with great history and fully renovated technology is in the making! 1. Mr. Khaled Al-Gamal, other than your extreme passion for what you are doing, what is the key to your success? I always try to set a goal that I work really hard towards achieving. When I was Food and Beverage Director, I wanted to become Director of Operations then General Manager. It happened a year before my 40th birthday, but of course it takes a lot of hard work. I’m is not stable or is not secure, people might stay away. the type of person who is strongly determined on goals However, the ones who will come for business are still and achievements. going to come, so my chance is to keep this person coming back by looking well after them. Of course 2. How do you see your move from Ritz Carlton Abu there are external forces that we can’t predict or Dhabi to Cairo Marriott Hotel? influence, but we can learn how to deal with them. I I’m a Marriott person, and it’s the same company. At hope we don’t witness anymore crises because things the end of the day, you have guests to take care of, are looking very positive, so we’re on the right track. a team working with you and you also have owners’ expectations and assets to maintain, so the job is more 4. We heard that some innovations are taking place at or less the same. I view it as a very good step forward, Cairo Marriott Hotel soon, what should we expect? because The Cairo Marriott is almost double the size There will always be innovation within Marriott; we have of The Ritz Carlton and therefore has a bigger number lots of future plans to do with mobility. Today’s traveler of employees. The next step we will see soon, company. I’m proud of this job and proud to be here. as it’s already happening in few of our hotels, is that the guest will be able to check in without stopping by 3. 5. Will the renovations take the majestic feeling one gets as soon as they step in Cairo Marriott into account? One hundred percent! It’s a historical palace that we’re very proud of and we have to cherish it. We have some plans, nothing major, to enhance it and give it a different look which might also include changing some of the staff uniforms.
8. Walking around the hotel, the employees do not think of it as a hotel but rather a palace. It is a beautiful palace. Its layout with the two connecting towers, creates an easy flow to go through the palace to your room without feeling that you are actually leaving the building, rather a complex with a garden. Also, no other hotel in the Cairo downtown area has a similar sizable garden.
6. What are the renovation plans? We are now working on our swimming pool and health club; they are being completely renovated. The Saraya Spa, which is an addition to our health club and swimming pool with 11 treatment rooms, will be ready towards the end of the year or early next year. We are renewing our Egyptian Nights restaurant in the garden so it will have a new look and feel. Our garden is gorgeous and beautiful the way it is, so it will add to it. We are also renewing our rooms; the Zamalek tower has been under renovation for almost a year now and the Gezira tower will follow.
9. Where do you think your passion will lead you? I don’t know what’s next for me, but I always wanted to be in a hotel with my team. My passion has always lied in the hotel business and I’m most satisfied when I see things moving in the right direction. It’s a sense of achievement to feel that you have left your own mark on the place.
7. Coming to a place with a rich historical background like Cairo Marriott, what kind of effect does it leave on you? How can I say it; it fascinates me. I was flattered when I was asked to come over here, so personally I am very happy to be part of this iconic hotel that has been here for over 35 years and to work with such a great team. a.Will you be operating it from a historical perspective or focusing on renovations? Both actually because you enter and check in through a palace, but we end up taking you to one of the towers to stay in a modern renovated room. We have all the aspects you are expecting from a 5 star Marriott hotel room, but on the other hand, you also have the historical aspect when you are walking into the hotel lobby and checking in.
10. What are your future plans for Cairo Marriott, in terms of marketing for tourism or Egyptians? We offer a special discounted rate for Egyptians which many take advantage of especially during weddings. A lot of couples love having their weddings in the palace. We are always happy to offer this rate even during high occupancy. Also, our different restaurants are not only designed to welcome the hotel guests, but target locals to come and enjoy the feel of the palace. Our Egyptian Nights and Som3a Basha for example, are 80 percent customers from outside the hotel. 11. You moved from Jordan to the United States, then to Abu Dhabi and now Cairo, how are all these places different and how are they similar in terms of operations, marketing and target? Running hotels is more or less the same worldwide; the core business doesn’t change. What changes is the culture, how to deal with people and how to motivate them. Because we are people’s company, we work with people and provide service through people to people.
