THINGS ONLY

EGYPTIANS DO IN RAMADAN by Salma El feqy

R

amadan is not like any other month of the year, especially in Egypt. Ramadan is a month full of blessings, peace and serenity that Muslims from all around the world wait for from year to year. Just like everything else, Egyptians celebrate this holy month differently, that is why lots of Egyptians living abroad always come back for this month’s celebration. Here are some of the things that Egyptians do differently in Ramadan: 1. THE NUMBER OF GATHERINGS EGYPTIANS GET INVITED TO IS FUNNY It is one of Ramadan’s rituals to have gatherings during the whole month. You’d get to meet lots and lots of people that you know nothing about, because your mum’s greatest grandma had a friend who was also a relative from your dad’s side of the family so voila, she is technically family now! Egyptians normally get invited to around two handfuls of Iftars during this month and they simply love it! 2. RAMADAN-THEMED DECORATIONS IN EVERY SINGLE INCH You’d see those Ramadan-themed decorations literally in every single inch of the country; whether in homes, hotels, restaurants or even the streets. Lanterns take over the country; with Arabic calligraphy decorations that make you feel like you’re part of a short Arabic story for a whole month. 3. BINGE WATCH ALL THE ARABIC SERIES Ramadan series make a huge part of every Egyptian’s life in this holy month. In gatherings,

14 IDENTITY

people tend to talk about the events of the series as if it were real. The 100s of series that pop up during this holy month make you reach your ultimate levels of indecisiveness because you simply don’t know what to watch! 4. RAMADAN TENTS ALL OVER THE CITY It is quite amazing how we can even have fun while having our Sohour! We don’t need to just have a boring Sohour at our homes or even in a restaurant. No, we can do it a lot differently! A Sohour tent is one of the most amazing experiences one can ever enjoy in Ramadan. We get to eat LOTS of food and enjoy the performance of a great entertainer in the company of friends or family. 5. WEIRDLY COMBINED DESSERTS You would never find ‘konafa bel manga’ in any other country around the globe! In Ramadan, patisseries reach their maximum levels of creativity with the type of food they provide and Egyptians simply love it! All the konafa with Nutella, basbousa with red velvet and even Atayef with Nutella are just yummy in all Egyptians tummies!

And of course, one thing that remains a constant in every Ramadan is the amount of food that Egyptians consume during this holy month!

Essen

When we’re fasting, we never really have the energy to fuss about our beauty routine. For that reason, Identity came up with a simple, minimal energy look that suits all, and enhances your beauty!

EYES Sweep a nude pink colour over the brow bone. Then, blend in the colour over the crease of your eyes, darken the colour to highlight the colour of your eyes. Add a light shimmering pink or gold on your eyelids.

Revlon

EYELASHES Use a thick black mascara – over your top eyelashes, move the wand a few times. Use it once on your lower lashes to stay away from dramatic eyes.

NOSE AND CUPID’S BOW Use your illuminating highlighter on the corners of your eyes, the tip of your nose and on the Cupid’s bow to highlight your beautiful features.

Avon

Benefit

CHEEKS Add a matte light brown blush to accentuate your cheekbones and beautifully define your features. Add a light swipe of highlight on your cheekbones.

16 IDENTITY

EYEBROWS Use a light, brown eyebrow pencil to lightly fill in your eyebrows. No matter how dark your eyebrows are, never use black. Black eyebrow pencils smudge.

Deborah

Clinique

BASE Use a light coverage BB Cream to ensure a natural skin look. Stay away from heavy foundation during the day.

Deborah

LIPS Opt for lipstickless lips to keep your fresh face on trend. If you can’t leave without your favourite lipstick, go for nude pink lips to match your shimmery pink eye shadow.

EYEBROWS Fill in your brows with a brown eyebrow pencil to draw in strands of hair, making it look as natural as real hair.

Sohour

EYES Start by smoothly applying a light mauve/pink shade on the crease of your eyes as well as your eyelids. Use the same colour on your lower lashline creating a more dramatic look.

For your night out with friends, sport a simple yet fashionable look that reflects the Ramadan spirit as well as heightens your beauty.

Catrice

Lord and Berry

LASHLINE AND LASHES Use your Kohl pencil to draw over your lashline. Use an eyeshadow sponge to smudge it out. Fill in your waterline with a thin line of Kohl to define your lashes, then add your dramatic mascara on your lashes. Use your highlighter in the corners of your eyes.

BASE It’s safe to use regular foundation at night since there is no sun. Use a light coverage concealer under your eyes to cover any spots that may bother you.

Lord and Berry

CHEEKS Add a pink highlighter on your cheekbones, as well as the bridge of your nose to highlight the definitions of your face. Add a light subtle pink blush to your cheeks to give your foundation a rosy colour.

LIPS Line your lucious lips with a pink lipliner to contour the shape. Overline Cupids brow to give your upper lip a plump look. Use a darker pink shade to fill in your lining; don’t over colour your lips to avoid smudges and marks over your face.

Homemade

SKIN REMEDIES by Neamat Eltouby

S

ummer could be a difficult time for our skin, put Ramadan in the equation and your skin is a mess. The summer’s heat could maximize your pores and make your skin oily, and the dehydration that comes with fasting could easily cause dry skin. Not to mention the glow we all want but never have the energy to create with makeup or a visit to the spa. All of which are easy to fix at home. That is why we got your back with some easy homemade skin remedies!

Oily Skin HAZELNUT OIL: Pure hazelnut oil minimizes skin pores as well as oily patches to avoid the unwanted moist look during summer. YOGURT: Mix 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of yogurt with oatmeal. Apply mixture to face and neck for 5-10 minutes. Wash the mixture with lukewarm water and pat dry. TOMATOES: Cut up half a tomato and move it in circular motions on your face. Let the tomato juice sit on your face and neck for 10-15 minutes then wash with cold water.

18 IDENTITY

Antiaging Remedies Dry Skin COCONUT OIL: Use pure coconut oil to moisturize your skin naturally rather than using chemicals that may react badly with the sun. MAKE YOUR OWN OIL: Add a base of coconut oil (1 ounce) to 15 drops of essential oil. Opt for Neroil Oil to guarantee a nice smell that will dry out greasy skin and soothe out dry skin. You could also try out Carrot Seed Oil to smooth out your dry skin.

PASSION FRUIT SEED: Use coconut or hazelnut oil as a base and add passion fruit essential oil. Massage mixture on your face, giving it a healthy supply of vitamin c. Make it an anti-aging remedy to practice twice a day. ALMONDS: Soak 10 almonds in milk overnight. In the morning, grind the almonds into a paste and massage on your face in soft circular motions. Leave mask on for 30 minutes and wash thoroughly with lukewarm water when done.

A Natural Glow BANANA FACE MASK: Mash 1 banana with 1 tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of lemon juice, and ¼ cup of oats (optional). Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before you apply. Use this mask on clean skin, and let it soak in for 15-20 minutes before washing it off.

CUCUMBER: Add a small grated cucumber to 2-3 tablespoons of yogurt and beat well. Apply to your face and neck and leave on until dry. Wash the mask off with cold water. Do it 3-4 days a week.

ALOE VERA MASK: Mix 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera gel, a pinch of turmeric, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon of milk. Apply mask on your face for 20 minutes. Then, rinse your face with lukewarm water and pat dry. Apply mask twice a week to ensure a natural glow.

Homemade Scrubs GINGER AND COCONUT OIL SCRUB: Mix ¼ cup of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of ginger (chopped), ¼ almond oil, ¾ sugar, ¼ salt, and 1-4 drops of hazelnut oil. In a small saucepan, heat the coconut oil and ginger pieces on low heat for 5-10 minutes until the ginger scent has moved to the oil. While mixture is warm, mix the almond oil and set until it cools down. Add sugar and salt as well as the hazelnut oil into the mixture. Massage the liquid on damp skin and set for 2-4 minutes. Use a towel soaked in warm water over your face for a minute and rinse off.

COCONUT LIME SUGAR SCRUB: Mix ¼ cup of coconut oil with 1 cup of white sugar and 1 tablespoon of coconut. Add 6-8 drops lime essential oil into the mixture. Apply mixture on your face and body before you hop into the shower and guarantee yourself a moisturized, shimmering complexion.

Dressing up in Ramadan could be quite challenging when you want to have fun, take your time, and dress like the queen you are. Accessorize with bright colours or neutrals that will even out the boldness as well as bring the colours out. Be bold with pieces like skirts or overlays, adding a bold heel or neutral sneakers.

MODESTY ESSENTIALS by Neamat Eltouby

The holy month of Ramadan is a time where we all settle and focus on our spirituality rather than our worldly lives. As tiring as it may be to dress up while we fast, we still strive to look fabulous and feminine, while maintaining our modesty for this special time of the year. Being modest does not go against femininity; in fact it can highlight it through modest sartorial guidelines.

DRESS CODE by Amira ElSayed

So along with certain rules such as no gossip and no loud music which most of us are already familiar with; your dress code is something which also requires some alteration for this subdued and respectful time of the year.

Pashmina

I think it goes without saying that almost all of us own at least one or more pashminas, especially living here in the Middle East where you sometimes need to cover up. But again, this is such a go to fashion saviour, if anything they are an essential clothing requirement. If you are a ‘last minute’ person and you need to get an outfit together as you are going to an Iftar, or Sohour – anywhere really during Ramadan - pashminas are definitely the way to go.

Layering

28 IDENTITY

Layering is key in this climate and is also a simple way to dress accordingly to the culture. You can literally go mad with layers. There’s nothing worse than being in a room where the A/C is blasting on high, you are freezing and the only way to warm up – is to go outside and stand in the warm air. But with layers, you have that luxury of being able to peel off or add on whether or not you want to cool down or warm up. Equally, by layering up your look, you are adhering and being respectful to the conservative dress code of the holy month, as well as looking stylish of course.

Long Floaty Dresses

Long, floaty, whimsical dresses just exude an air of elegance and take you back to an era where demure and modest dressing was all the rage. Depending on the material, this style of dress can keep you cool in the hot days and evenings and in addition, protect you from the cold air-conditioning inside, whilst enjoying an Iftar gathering. Style this look up with some big chunky earrings which are trending, some nice heels or wedges and either a cross-body bag or clutch. For daytime and for a more comfortable look, team the dress with some nice flats.

Kaftans

Leaning towards a more traditional look especially in the Arab world, a kaftan is probably one of the most versatile items of clothing you could own. Not only can it be the perfect beach cover-up, but it can also be worn as a loose fitting dress and layered over other clothing items. Again, this would be a perfect Iftar outfit with some dressy flat sandals and to funk the look up, team your Kaftan with a pair of Converse or white trainers.

Denim Bomber Jackets

Jackets such as bombers; which exploded onto our fashion scenes last year and still going this year, khaki style cover ups, capes and blazers are all great little items again to layer up an outfit and cover up a look which may require more modesty. The reason I’m mentioning denim jackets in particular is that this look is having a bit of a resurgence for Spring/Summer. The style is verging on a more ‘boyfriend’ cut and a larger looking feel, making it ideal as a nice little cover-up to throw over your shoulders.

course the foreign currency is extremely challenging because of the dollar evaluation; having to ship our textiles and fabrics from abroad has become more of hassle than it ever was. Lastly, breaking the norm of having an Egyptian designer on a big platform is also a challenge that I hope to have overcome with my latest accomplishment at NYFW, but I am prepared for the difficulties I still might have to face with the difference in cultures. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT ARE THE 2018 FASHION TRENDS?

The inspiration behind “To Love and To Hold” is marriage vows. It’s the extremes of life; sickness and health, happiness and sadness, that’s why the collection is black and white. The collection was part of this year’s Art Hearts Fashion show. It included 20 beautifully designed gowns from both ends of the spectrum; the black and the white. The elegant garments with all their embellishments emitted romantic vibes leaving us feeling the love in the air.

I’ll be very general about 2018 fashion trends when it comes to Egyptian women because they have become very independent, so it has effected how they dress up. You could find them more daring; you could find them more sharp, more edgy, overall not as soft as they used to be. Inspirational edgy fashion and playing with fabrics of different textiles and patterns is now very important, in addition to beadings and embroidery that can style up any simple outfit. All those little things can make your style more edgy and fashionable.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE CHOSEN AS NYFW EGYPTIAN REPRESENTATIVE?

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR TEMRAZA IN THE FUTURE?

Of course I was over the moon having Temraza as Egypt’s official representative in New York Fashion Week, because it was the first time in history to ever recognize Egypt in a NYFW platform or even an international platform and event as big as this. It felt like such an honour, and I felt truly blessed to have this much support from my country.

We hope to keep invading the red carpet at events in Hollywood and continue to be an international brand in Egypt; maintaining this is more difficult than it sounds. I would like to highlight how important it is to utilize your education in the fashion industry. Most people here in Egypt think that they can just sit around and be creative if they have a pencil and a paper, but it’s actually a lot more than that. It requires a lot of education, fashion communication, fashion designing and fashion psychology; which is how to use which design on which body shape in order to look good.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN EGYPTIAN DESIGNER ABROAD? There is a lot of challenges. At first, it was competing with the high quality haute couture standard dresses of the international platform, or actually being effective and drawing good feedback behind those monopolized brands. It was a huge step for us. Of

We Thank Farida Temraz for quite an inspiring interview and wish her best of luck.

A DV I C E G U R U

TILL FAITH DO US

Apart

by Marwa Rakha

Dear Marwa, I’m a 27 year old girl with a very complicated situation. I belong to a religion that I don’t believe in anymore. Irrespective of the reasons, I’ve secretly converted to another religion many years ago. Only some of my close friends are aware of that, but surely my parents know nothing yet. As a consequence, when it comes to relationships, I chose a guy from the religion I now believe in. Now I’ve been with this perfect guy for over a year; he adores me and I’m completely crazy about him. I can say that our relationship is getting serious, and even though he is aware of my complicated situation, we’ve lately been discussing our future and marriage. My problem here as you can well imagine is that I don’t know what to do regarding my parents. I’ve got two scenarios here. First, I can come clean about it all (maybe only the marriage and not the conversion part). I guess it would be less shocking for them to know that I only want to get married to a guy from a different religion and not that I also converted. I’m certain they will totally disapprove and I can’t even begin to predict their exact reaction or the magnitude of our dispute and how the situation might unfold after that. Second scenario is to proceed and only inform them after I’m already married. I know that’s a harsh option, but it’s the more guaranteed one. I’m really apprehensive of their reaction if I ever told them before the marriage. I know that there is no easy choice here, and I know that whatever I do I may lose them for good. But I also know that this is my life, I have the right to choose the religion I believe in and the guy I want to spend the rest of my life with. This is not selfish of me; it’s one of my basic rights. Dear Convert, Your situation is very difficult indeed! Before I give you any advice, I need to ask you if your family found out that you have adopted a new religion,

34 IDENTITY

and actually converted, would your life be in danger? Would they kill you? Would they physically hurt you? If the answer is yes, then do not tell them that you have converted. I would also advise you to start looking for job opportunities abroad, so that you can practice your new religion without having to lead a double life. On the other hand, if your family would try to reason with you, ask you to sit with men of your previous religion, get upset but eventually support you, or leave you alone, then I would encourage you to tell them. Choose the wisest, calmest, and most openminded person in your family to start with, and then ask him/her for support while telling the rest of the family. As you notice, I have intentionally started my response to your question with a special focus on telling your family about your new beliefs. This step is more important than telling them about your boyfriend. Changing your religion is a huge step and there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be done to make your step official. If you had stated that you relinquished religion, that you are no longer following or practicing any religion, there would have been no pressing need to tell anyone. Many people live like that, and the paperwork that was done when they were born, does not affect their lives as non-believers. As for your relationship, after you come out of the religion closet, it will only be natural for you to get married to someone from your new religion. Once your family is aware of your current status, whether they approve or not, it would be normal, and expected, for you to introduce your guy. If you start

If you’re truly meant to be together, life will f ind a way to make it happen.

with telling them about the guy, they would assume that you converted because of him. Their focus would be on separating the two of you, so you can get back to your senses. This would be my advice, but this is not your only option. I have known a couple, who were of different religions, but they were in love and they respected their differences. In front of his parents, she claimed to be Christian, and in front of her family, he claimed to be Muslim. Their relationship lasted for 7 years, and they planned on leaving Egypt, getting married abroad, and continuing their lives abroad. The families were not supposed to know the truth.

They broke up for other reasons. I have always wondered about death; what would happen if one of them died? In which graveyards would they be buried? How would the families react when the truth was revealed? The decision to leave Egypt forever, to convert officially abroad, and to get married and live in another, more tolerant, country is a big step and many hearts will be broken in the process. This is why I would urge you to consider my first advice, and to tell your family about your beliefs – unless, of course, your life would be in danger, then your only option would be to find another home country, and start your life there.

SELF-PEACE DURING THE HOLY MONTH by Salma Elfeqy

Ramadan is one of the most magical months of the year where one can only hope to reach remarkable levels of peace and serenity. Muslims from all around the world literally wait all year long for this holy month. It is not because they love fasting, but because they love the sense of self-peace that is clearly manifested during this holy month. Here are some of the things that people do in Ramadan that help generate self-peace: 36 IDENTITY

1. READING QURAN

7. HAVING SOME ALONE TIME

It goes without saying that reading Quran, whether during Ramadan or any other month, brings about this tremendous amount of self-peace. You’d be reading this verse and suddenly you feel extremely happy and content. It is like applying medicine on a wound and suddenly having it disappear. This is the power of Quran.

People need to give huge weights to the importance of alone time. Alone time helps you understand yourself more, connect with your inner self to be able to understand its needs and wants.

2. PRAYING TARAWIH Tarawih prayers at the mosque is not like any other prayer. Going to the mosque and praying for minutes and sometimes even hours with a crowd that you don’t even know gives you goosebumps. It is as if you’ve travelled multiple time zones away living in your own world of serenity and peace. This is exactly how Tarawih prayers feel like. 3. HELPING THOSE IN NEED Any kind of help brings us closer to God and helps us achieve inner peace. Some may consider the act of giving as selfish, because eventually you are mainly looking for this personal satisfaction portrayed in self-peace that you receive right after you help someone. But even if it is considered selfish, who cares? It is a win-win situation. 4. QUITTING A BAD HABIT Research has shown that people tend to be irritated when they are doing a bad habit. Researchers say that for one person to completely be peaceful, they need to be 100% fine with their routines. Try to quit a habit that is making you lose sleep at night, or making you feel guilty or self-conscious. They say it only takes around 2 months for you to quit a habit. Ramadan can be the start of this! 5. STARTING A NEW HABIT Replace this old habit with one that makes you feel happier and more satisfied. It can be as little as smiling more to strangers. Take this initiative and stick to it and you’ll notice the feelings of accomplishment overwhelming you. 6. MAKING DUAA Many people underestimate the power of duaa. Making a duaa and knowing that God will definitely accept your duaa makes you develop this sense of spirituality and peacefulness. Duaa helps in redeeming the sole and healing any amount of pain one has ever been through. The power of duaa is indescribable.

8. SPENDING TIME WITH THE FAMILY Spending some time with your family watching TV series or playing games during family gatherings helps you develop a sense of belonging, which adds to your peace as well. It makes you realize how blessed you are which brings us to the next point. 9. COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS This habit is a must for a peaceful successful life filled with acceptance, happiness and blessings. Counting your blessings and thanking God for them daily, weekly or even monthly is one of your greatest weapons. Once you start counting your blessings, you’ll realize that you are truly blessed. You sometimes even think that you don’t deserve half of it, and while you are doing all of this, God is on the other end adding to your blessings. 10. HELPING YOUR MUM PREPARE IFTAR Even if you are one of those kids who never help their mothers out during the whole year, when you help her during this month, it gets you two closer and makes you feel like you are achieving something together. First, you are trying to lessen the burden off of her, which makes her feel great and consequently makes you feel great as well. Second, you are technically feeding the whole household members and taking their Thawab. 11. PLAYING SPORTS Sports play a huge role in bettering our peace of mind and health. Our mental health is directly connected to our physical health. So if you are maintaining a healthy body, then expect your soul to be healthy as well. Playing sports helps you get rid of negative energy. Not only that, but it makes you feel happier, at peace with your surroundings and very energetic.

Eventually, try to make the best out of this month and out of every other month. Don’t restrict selfpeace to Ramadan; to the contrary, try to search for peace in your everyday life, because without inner peace, you’ll feel lost all the time.

Ramadan Traditions from Around the Globe by Rana Ramez

Ramadan is loaded with a joyful spirit and delightful traditions practiced by Muslims worldwide. What makes the celebrations unique and vibrant in every country, is the fact that the holy month has blended with the traditions varying from one region to another. And though Ramadan is a reuniting time for Muslims around the world, in terms of adopting similar daily routines and religious practices, most communities retain their own special ways of celebrating the holy month, with their own unique cultural traditions. Check out 9 of the most pleasant customs practiced by over 1.5 billion Muslims during the holiest month of the Islamic Calendar. 1. THE ISLAMIC HALLOWEEN In the Gulf countries, children roam the streets of their neighborhoods wearing their traditional costumes, knock on the doors of their neighbors and sing for exchange of sweets, candies and chocolates. Sounds familiar? That’s a fun tradition to reward the children who fast during Ramadan as it also aims at educating the public about the month. While being practiced throughout the Arabian Gulf countries, some aspects such as the timing and the name differ from country to country. In the UAE, it is called ‘Haq Al Laila’ and celebrated two weeks before Ramadan. And in other countries, like Kuwait and Qatar, it’s called ‘Garangao’ and is celebrated after the breaking of the fast two weeks into the holy month - on the 14th night – for three days. 2. OUTDOOR IFTAR PICNICS Whether a Muslim or not, residing in Delhi during Ramadan means one thing: Iftar picnics. On Ramadan evenings after Maghreb, Indians tend to gather in the alleys and streets of the old walled city to break their fasts with picnics on mosque terraces and treats from street vendors. The Jama Masjid, located in the heart of Old Delhi and considered as the grandest place in the city to perform Maghreb prayers, is the center point around which all the allies are situated. The 400 year old mosque itself can

38 IDENTITY

accommodate up to 25,000 people in its courtyards and is usually filled to capacity when Ramadan falls in the summer months. 3. RAMADAN POETRY Locally known as ‘Roadha Mas’ , Ramadan practices in Maldives are interestingly enthusiastic. Various local dishes such as ‘kulhi boakibaa’ (fish cake), ‘foniboakiba’ (a flour cake) and ‘gulha’ (fish balls) are prepared for the Iftar. Following that comes the reciting of the Raivaru, Ramadan related poetry, by the the poets. It’s a Maldivian ancient tradition form of poetry cherished by the local Maldivians. It is composed of three or more lines with the distinct rhythmic pattern of poetry. 4. RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS ALL NIGHT LONG Unlike their normal daily routines, the people of Algeria stay up all night during Ramadan. As ravishing as it may sound, Algerians organize religious festivities throughout the night up until Sohour. The streets are always active and very crowded all night long; the markets are open and people wander around bonding together. As a consequence, work always starts an hour or so late during the holy month in Algeria. 5. DRUMMING AT DAWN We all know the pre-dawn caller or the ‘Mesaharaty’, but what we don’t know is that the tradition of these drummers dates back to the Ottoman Empire. And despite the fact that this tradition continues to this day in Egypt and many Gulf countries, Turkey is paying much more attention to it. An official costume and membership card for these drummers have recently been introduced. Every night before sunrise and for 30 days straight, the caller wearing Ottoman attire will walk through the streets playing the drum enthusiastically to wake people up for the final meal before the fast begins. 6. HOUSE PAINTING Morocco prefers to be ahead of time when it comes to Ramadan preparations. While most countries

start the preparations for the holy month just one or two days ahead of it, Moroccans begin such practices two or three weeks earlier. They paint their houses, clean them up and shine their kitchen utensils. In addition to that, and in order to trigger the holy atmosphere earlier, they start inviting their friends and relatives to feasts.

copper cups on a tray, the ring game consists of two teams where one member has to hand over the rings to another member of the same team and the opposite one has to guess that who could possibly be hiding them.

7. PAYING RESPECTS TO ANCESTORS

Last but definitely not least, the Fanous is the Christmas tree to Ramadan. Cairo is considered the birthplace of the Fanous; it has a special place in the heart of the whole Egyptian Ramadan traditions system. The history of the lanterns lighting is believed to date back to the Fatimid era when hundreds of lanterns were used to well-lit the streets of old Cairo during the nights of Ramadan. Each year, the streets of Egypt rejoice with Ramadan celebrations and decorations by these lanterns.

In Java Island of Indonesia, normally a week before Ramadan starts, the Nyekar ritual takes place. The ritual consists of paying respects to the forefathers through visiting the graves of the dead relatives to decorate them with flowers and pray. The cemeteries across the island become crowded with families, and some locals also pay a visit to the graves of ancient kings and revered public figures. 8. GAME NIGHTS Owning to distinct customs, a popular game called ‘Al Siniya’ or The Tray is played in some parts of Iraq during Ramadan, and the ring game in other areas. After having Iftar, men would gather around to play this hours-long game with their family and friends. While the aim of The Tray game is for players to find the hidden dice under one of the several overturned

9. LANTERNS LIGHTING

Finally, such diversified traditions and customs add to the beauty and magic of this holy month. It doesn’t really matter in which country you’ll spend your Ramadan, since this month has the power to bring along with it a great sense of peace, cheerfulness and tranquility, besides unifying the Muslim world and spreading love and affection. MONUMENTAL MOSQUES FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD by Amina Elghandour

Islam, started with a set of beliefs that inspired imperial conquests, brought in wealth and quickly manifested into a civilization. And art is an integral part of any civilization. In the period between 632 and 750 Muslim conquerors have taken over lands from the two powerful empires in the Middle East, Byzantium and the Sassanid – and they would continue to expand further in the following centuries. As a consequence of its geographical growth, Islamic architecture borrowed from preceding civilizations and elaborated on it. It was not long before Islam rendered its own form of worship buildings – in that case, the mosques. Mosques combined existing features like domes, columnar arches, and mosaics and added new ones like large courts for congregational prayer and the Mihrab, to enable Islamic worship – and still each mosque has its unique feature and story. Ramadan is just the perfect time to contemplate the beauty 40 IDENTITY

of Islamic architecture, hence Identity presents 5 of the most monumental mosques around the world. 1. THE DOME OF THE ROCK (QUBBAT ALSAKHRAH)- PALESTINE This mosque is situated in the heart of the holy city, Jerusalem. The Dome of the Rock mosque was one of the earliest Islamic buildings in Jerusalem, 691 AD undertaken by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwān to imprint the presence of the new religion onto the historical city. No expense was spared; the best Byzantine architects were hired to design it along Christian artists who rendered its intricately beautiful mosaics against a golden background. Its design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, while the great epigraphic vine frieze was adapted from the pre-Islamic Syrian style. The blend of features this mosque provides bespeaks of the multi-cultured city that inspired its design.

2. SULTAN OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIN MOSQUE – BRUNEI This mosque is not a historical one, in fact built in 1958. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque stands as an example of modern Islamic architecture combining Mughal and Italian motifs. Situated in the city of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque is considered one of the most picturesque mosques in the Asia Pacific and a major landmark of Brunei. Its rich marble minarets and golden domes are accentuated by the fabulous grounds with lush greenery, fountains and an artificial lagoon on the banks of the Brunei River at Kampong Ayer. The mosque appears to be floating, a scene that is reminiscent of Venice but with an Islamic flavour; no wonder it is referred to as the “village in the water.” 3. TAJ-UL-MASAJID MOSQUE- INDIA Shining under the Indian sun with its pink façade and its two 18-storey high octagonal minarets, Taj-ul-Masajid is the grandest mosque in India – and one of the largest in Asia. The mosque also has three huge bulbous domes, a massive main hallway with grand pillars and marble flooring typical of Mughal architecture. The Quibla wall and its ceilings are decorated with rich intricate designs. This impressive building is not only used for prayer but also retains the Islamic tradition of a ‘madrasa’- the mosque is still used today as an Islamic school during the day time.

4. THE GRANDE MOSQUÉE HASSAN II -MOROCCO While Casablanca, Morocco is known as an enticing holiday destination, it’s also the home for one of the most beautiful mosques, The Grande Mosquée Hassan II. Its impressive and charming architecture and lofty green minarets (210 metres) stand just at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean with the waters flowing beneath its glass floors- picturesque scenery that must enchant worshippers. It is the largest mosque in the country and the 7th largest in the world, holding up to 105,000 worshippers between the prayer hall inside and the outside grounds. Hassan II set his intention before building this magnificent mosque that “those who go to pray [get] to praise the creator on firm soil, [and] contemplate God’s sky and ocean.”

5. SULEYMANIYE MOSQUE - TURKEY A survey of the most monumental mosques can’t overlook the wonders of Istanbul and the jewels of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul is a spectacular city with rich architecture that reflects its historical wealth as an important city in different eras. The Ottoman Empire is its golden age and rendered many fabulous buildings, amongst them is the magnificent Suleymaniye mosque, one of Istanbul’s cultural symbols that crowns the city’s Third Hill. The mosque was built between 1550 and 1557. On the inside the mosque is breathtaking in its open space and serene simplicity; the architect incorporated four buttresses into the walls of the building creating an enticing ‘transparence.’ The outside features exquisitely landscaped gardens and a threesided forecourt with a central domed ablutions fountain. The four minarets with their 10 beautiful balconies are said to symbolize Süleyman’s reign, as the fourth of the Ottoman sultans to rule the city and the 10th sultan after the establishment of the empire.

Mosques are built with the purpose of worship, but each has its story that is embedded in its art, in the tradition it retains and in the statement given by its founder. IDENTITY 41

WORKOUT RULES WHILE FASTING by Amira ElSayed

C

ommon questions like “When should I work out?” and “What should I eat?” usually pop up during Ramadan. For most people, the answer is “never” and “a lot”, respectively. For the few who care, the resources to help answer these questions are scarce. On top of being a health issue, it is also a time management issue – for many, time will mostly be allocated to Iftars and Tarawih prayers at the mosque. How can one squeeze in a decent workout routine when Tarawih prayers are later in the evening, and Fajr prayer is earlier in the morning?

Let me start off by highlighting what fasting does to our bodies. Fasting is proven to be a very healthy habit. People from all around the world, not only Muslims, use fasting for various health reasons. Without getting into too much detail, it can help you lose weight if you are eating correctly because it does increase your metabolism which makes you burn more calories than usual.

After a workout your body will need fast absorbing carbs (carbohydrates), as this type of food is used as energy during the workout. But it’s best to opt for high protein foods and slow absorbing carbs, followed by a quick snack (probably fruits that are high on water and electrolytes) for Iftar. For Sohour, have slow absorbing carbs like fava beans and oatmeal.

Timing your workout during Ramadan depends on your lifestyle and schedules. And it really depends on one thing, what works best for you. It’s best to start off Ramadan with shorter workouts than usual and plan 3 workouts per week for the first 10 days, mainly because the body is still not ready for fasting and is still adjusting to the new regime. After the first 10 days, you can usually start splitting your training to include pre and after Iftar workouts throughout the week.

A key element to healthy fasting is to stay hydrated throughout the 8 or 9 hours you are allowed to have food and drinks. People tend to drink lots of water during Iftar and Sohour, but unless you are a camel, this will never benefit you. Instead, you should try to consume water regularly every 45 minutes throughout the non fasting period and definitely more during the workout.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF RAMADAN WORKOUTS Going to the gym on an empty stomach, without any water and slightly sleepdeprived during the long summer days of May might seem a little loony. Yet all across the world, many Muslims choose to do this. It’s important to find out what works best for you. You may find that you perform better doing weight training on an empty stomach, or that you feel more energized doing cardio after a light Iftar meal.

DO’S DO keep workouts short, about 30 minutes to a maximum of 60 minutes. DO light cardiovascular exercises – walking or cycling – to help burn calories and improve stamina, full body stretching to improve flexibility and detoxification, or mat exercises such as an abs workout and push-ups. DO drink plenty of water between the hours of Iftar and Sohour. Drink water with sea salt or coconut water to increase the electrolytes in your body, which are essential for heart, nerve and muscle functions.

DON’TS DO NOT do high intensity exercises like sprinting, stepper or heavy weightlifting (go for lighter than you would normally push) as it can cause joint or muscle injuries and also lead to complications such as low blood pressure, hypoglycemia and dizziness. DO NOT continue training if you feel weak, dizzy or sick. Although you are training, lowering your usual exercise intensity is essential to staying fit and healthy. DO NOT eat lots of fried and fatty foods as it will counteract the good work you do at the gym. Try to keep your hands off of those delicious Ramadan treats as well!

SENTIMENTAL RAMADAN DECORATION by Nada Swelam Interior & Furniture Designer Co-Founder of Zillion Designs, Instagram: @Zillijdesigns

It’s that special time of the year again! The holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner, so get ready for some fun home decorating tips to get you into the festive spirit. In Egypt, Ramadan has its own taste. It is not only a religious month, it is a month of many cultural traditions and customs that we love. Everything is different during this month; the shop window displays, the street decorations, the street odor, and even people’s garments. These customs are instilled in our memories and they are what give us a sense of happiness and nostalgia when this month arrives. Ramadan is also a month of holy bliss and inner peace, a month of connection with the divine and with your loved ones, and a month of daily feasts and Iftar & Sohour parties. Gathering loved ones at home is something that we look forward to from year to year, so why not get inspired from this multisensory Ramadan street experience and use it to decorate your own home. Here are a few ideas on what you could do to get your home ready for the holy month. 2. Create a Unique Entrance Corner You can get started with creating your own ‘Ramadany’ entrance corner, something nice to greet your visitors with. Add an exciting small console table at the entrance and decorate it with lanterns, string lights or some candles. Add a Quran holder, some Islamic paintings or art, or even your own homemade banners. You can add a tall planter or two to frame your corner.

1. Lanterns and Lighting Lighting is an important factor that could help set the mood of any space. Since we are all about creating a warm comfortable space in Ramadan, so warm lighting is recommended. The lantern or “Fanous” is an integral part of Ramadan traditions, and most homes have at least one of those from the onset of the month. You can place a big colored Fanous at the entrance, and use other small lanterns to decorate your table and main seating areas. Some of these lanterns could also have candleholders. Another idea inspired from Caireene Ramadan street traditions is using string lights. These could be used indoors to decorate the walls or could be placed outdoors above your roof or garden seating area. These subtle lights are perfect for setting a relaxed cozy mood particularly in gardens and terraces.

3. Tableware Decoration Sharing meals is an important part of what makes this month so special, making the dining table setting one of the main things that should be considered when decorating your home. Dress your dinner table with Islamic motifs, Arabian themed napkins and placemats. Use many small candles and place them all over the table. You can also create your own printable Iftar duaa and zikr paper and place it with your tableware for people to read before Iftar. Furthermore, you could create a “break the fast” corner, which would have food and drinks for visitors. Decorate it with lanterns and banners as well. Place some moon or star shaped plates for nuts and dates. 4. Odors The sense of smell can also be activated through the use of “Bukhoor”. Bukhoor rods are burned in charcoal burners, and used to perfume houses, and clothes. It is a traditional item in many Arab countries and is a symbol of hospitality. Bukhoor also has many benefits; it calms the nervous system and allows people to be focused and alert.

5. A Prayer Corner Ramadan is all about long nights of prayers. You can create a designated space or a room in your home as a praying corner. Decorate it with some floor pillows, for extra seating, your favorite praying mats, and some lanterns. This could be the corner where you pray and read Quran.

7. Fabrics and Traditional Pillows When it comes to fabrics, there are many traditional fabric prints and patterns that could be used in various ways throughout your space. For example, traditional ‘khayamia’ fabrics can be used on outdoor tables, placed on the floor or hanged at your entrance corner. These are also present in many pillow covers. You can also add some more throw pillows and poufs with Arabian designed covers.

6. Outdoor Seating Area If you have an outdoor space; garden, roof or terrace, you can create a modern Arabian seating area with some simple lights hanging from trees and some colorful floor cushions. Add a low table for outdoor eating and some floor cushion seats. These are the perfect seating areas for friend gatherings and rounds of backgammon games!

8. Warm Colour Schemes Ramadan is a time of warmth, so the colour scheme for your home decorations should be all about festive warm colours. This includes shades of reds, oranges, purples and greens. Gold is also a colour you should add as an accent colour in accessories and lanterns, banners, or even the planters.

THE YEAR OF LESS:

Life Is Worth More than Anything You Can Buy in a Store by Amina Moustapha

What if you set yourself on a challenge to not shop for an entire year? Do you think you will survive it? In the consumerism cycle that grips us all: Earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat; do you think anyone will survive it? Well, Cait Flanders certainly did, she wrote a whole book about it. 52 IDENTITY

This read will teach you a lot about life challenges, about yourself, and that less is certainly more, here is how: 1. YOU WILL SEE YOURSELF IN HER STRUGGLE You will root for Cait; you will empathize and you will see yourself in her struggle and in what she’s accomplished. Additionally, she sets you up with your own set of tools and tips to change your situation (should that be your goal), whether it’s a shopping ban, bad habit to quit or maybe if you just want to make more sense of your own budgeting. Never has the world of personal finance felt so personal. 2. YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO MAKE PEACE WITH THE REAL YOU Cait shows us through her words and her story that the keys to make peace with ourselves are self-accepting, healing, and deliberate decisionmaking. The tips she provides us are entwined with her actions in the story, with her decisions and her mistakes. In the face of hardship, she realized why she had always turned to shopping, alcohol, and food — and what it had cost her. Unable to reach for any of her usual vices, she changed habits she’d spent years perfecting and discovered what truly mattered to her. Which leads us to our next point. 3. SHE SHOWS US HOW TO BUILD A HABIT In our day-to-day lives, habits can often be tough to build, as there are plenty of distractions that can lead us off the straight and narrow and right back to our old ways. We can see that clearly through Cait’s struggles and relapses, and then she shows us the way to get back on our feet, just like she did. Getting through everyday is the way to achieve what we want and how to build a habit. Furthermore there are some habits that need to be rooted out, but first you have to acknowledge them, and to confess that they are ruining your life, and then you go on the

“The Year of Less” documents Cait’s life for twelve months during which she bought only consumables: groceries, toiletries, gas for her car. Along the way, she challenged herself to consume less of many other things besides shopping. She decluttered her apartment and got rid of 70 percent of her belongings; learned how to fix things rather than throw them away. At every stage, she learned that the less she consumed, the more fulfilled she felt.

More was never the answer. The answer, it turned out, was always less.

path of getting rid of them. Cait had her share of bad habits. Her addiction to the wrong things was her worst enemy, so we watch her as she fights these things off and kicks them out of her life. 4. SHE PROVES THAT WE CAN MAKE THE BEST OUT OF EVERYTHING & ANYTHING IN OUR LIVES Cait questioned how you can make the best out of your life, if you can’t make the best out of your home. She started to count the useless and the useful things she owned; she began to think up ways to reuse that or renew this. She shows us how our world can be so rich while we turn a blind eye to it. Her story is full of lessons she taught herself, and us with her along the way on how to stop obsessing with getting new things to have a better life. She shows us that life is worth more than anything you can buy in a store. 5. SHE ENCOURAGES US TO PAUSE & THINK FIRST One of the most important tricks we see in the book, is stopping to assess our emotional state when we’re about to hit the purchase button or swipe our credit card. Cait’s overall goal with her book is to encourage us to pause and think about what’s going on inside our heads when we feel the need to consume more or binge on whatever it is – shopping, drinking, eating, social media etc. Stopping to ask ourselves why we are about to make a purchase and honestly assessing whether it’s a necessity or a balm for taking away the pain of current emotions, helps us become more aware of our emotions.

Blending Cait’s compelling story with inspiring insight and practical guidance, “The Year of Less” will leave you questioning what you’re holding on to in your own life — and, quite possibly, lead you to find your own path of less. IDENTITY 53
