Three in One:
HOW ENERGY HEALING GETS YOU BACK ON TRACK by Selma Köhn Energy – we use that word almost every day. We often say it in phrases like “I don’t have enough energy.” “This takes up all of my energy.” “He is sucking energy from me.” It comes out so naturally, yet seldom are we aware of what it actually means. Stemming from the Greek word enérgeia. The word energy describes a state of being active, the ability to be active or simply the life force that runs through us. When it comes to the latter, many theories are backed by scientific facts that everything around and within us is energy. Nikola Tesla, scientist and inventor, was probably the most popular person to state that “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration“. Since we are a part of the universe, we should see ourselves in those terms too. Former NASA physicist and world-renowned healer, Dr. Barbara Brennan, once stated that “Anything that happens in the physical body will happen in the pattern of the energy fields first.“ Not only does energy flow through us, there is also a unified energy field which surrounds our body, very often referred to as the aura. It correlates with our mental, emotional and physical condition. As body, mind and soul are interconnected, when one is afftected, the other is too. In other words, our thoughts affect our emotions, and our emotions affect our body. All three of these collectively affect our general well-being. Hence, when this energetic field is in alignment, the body will follow suit. If not, diseases will develop. So quantum physics and its definition of energy paved the way to how healing of the human body should occur. By enhancing the energy flow of the body, the self-healing abilities of the body get activated. A holistic approach to healing where mental, emotional 18 Identity October 2016
and physical aspects of the ailment should therefore be considered. This form of practice, also specified as alternative healing method or energy healing, was already practised by ancient societies. The Eastern part of the world never stopped using it but the West did, maybe due to a different evolution in the medical field. But the West is waking up. Energy therapies including yoga, meditation or energy healing are on its map and even covered by health insurances in some countries. It comes in all kinds of variations, forms and names such as Reiki, Pranic Healing, Qigong, Hatha Yoga, Transcendental Meditation, Acupuncture, Shiatsu. There are methods that both benefit the mental, emotional and physical well-being and support the self healing processes of the human body. Hippocrates, Greek physician (5th century BC) and seen as the father of Western medicine, once stated that “The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.” With energy healing, you even kill three birds with one stone. About the Author: Selma Köhn is a Rapid Transformational Therapist, Energy Healer, Public Speaker and Writer. She is trained by UK’s best Therapist, Marisa Peer, and a practitioner of The Marisa Peer Method. She is based in Cairo, Egypt, as well as Berlin, Germany.

FAVOURITE EGYPTIAN PLACES WE ALL ENJOY by Alia El Saady
A big part of your identity is the places you visit and travel to. Each place has its own heart and soul. And in Egypt, we have the privilege of having a multitude of characters and cultures within one country. From Islamic, to GrecoRoman, from untouched virgin beaches to full scale urban monuments, it’s no wonder that the places on this list are our favourite. 1- WADI EL GEMAL Wadi El Gemal is an exceptionally unique destination where you can see flocks of camels roaming the wild! The valley is an embodiment of nature in its purest form with mangrove trees perched in the middle of the sea. It is definitely one of the great examples of the raw and untouched parts of Egypt. The valley is also home to the Abada Bedouin tribe, who much like the wildlife, are unaffected by modernity and are one with Mother Nature through their nomadic lifestyle. 2- NABQ BAY Although some people believe that Sharm is past its heyday, what warrants several visits in the area is the Protectorate of Nabq. The main attraction is the Mangrove forest. The protectorate is also home to diverse wildlife, from gazelles to ibexes as well as authentic Bedouin tribe settlements. 20 Identity October 2016
3- VALLEY OF THE KINGS This burial site holds 63 royal tombs from the New Kingdom period (1550-1069 BC). The hieroglyphs and symbols that line the corridor towards the antechamber are perfectly preserved with vibrant colours and inscriptions. Each tomb is different from the other. And yet all this spectacular decoration is only a snippet of the original glory of this place. We’re lucky that a good portion of the tombs have survived to this day. 4- THE HOUSE OF SUHAYMI This house is a great example of Arab Islamic architecture with mashrabiyas on the windows. This 17th century Ottoman home shows what life in Medieval Cairo must have been like. And although it’s situated in the crowded and cramped Old Cairo district, it’s a large 3 storied mansion composed of public areas for the men of the household (Salamlik), and private spaces for the women (Haramlik). 5- THE ROMAN THEATRE Believed to be an academic institution where lectures were thought to be held. The theatre has 13 rows and was said to have taken up to 800 people. Mosaic flooring is also a notable part of the structure and the place stands as a symbol for Greco-Roman architecture in the city of Alexandria.

FORMING YOUR IDENTITY by Kate Kerpez
How would you describe your personal identity? Would you include personality traits? Your likes and dislikes? Your future plans? Your relationship with friends and family? Our identity is a complex creature that encompasses our relationships, hopes, fears, beliefs, activities, age, gender and more. We may even have some identities that we do not associate ourselves with at all. While self-identity refers to the way that we view ourselves, social identity refers to the way we are viewed by others, but they may not always match. For example, you might wear running shoes just because they’re comfortable, but a person walking by could assume that you are a runner and resultantly start up a conversation about the Olympic track events. ‘Runner’ may not be a part of your self-identity, but in that case, it becomes part of your social identity.
The groups we belong to play an important role in our identity. Belonging to a school group, religious In 1959, Erik Erikson unveiled his theory of group, book club or sports team can give us a sense psychosocial development, which describes the of belonging and importance. Adolescents tend to pursue stronger group identities during this stage. 28 Identity October 2016

11 BEAUTY MUST-HAVES by Nuha El Zubeir
Hello fall, the season of dark lipsticks and creative Halloween costumes. Here are 11 beauty must haves that’ll make you slay for this season, no questions asked.
MASCARA Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23) is definitely worth the hype. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Push Up Drama is also a great alternative ($11)
DARK RED LIPS MAC’s Diva ($17) is a staple in your collection. Another more affordable option is Colour Pop’s Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick Avenue ($6).
SETTING POWDER Leave the dewy looks for summer and spring, and mattify your face with Ben Nye’s Banana Powder ($18 for 1.5oz).
40 Identity October 2016
BLACK EYELINER You’ll need a kohl liner and eyeliner. Whether it’s liquid, pen or gel is completely up to you.
NUDE LIPS Better for fall are nude lips that have brown or grey undertones, rather than pink and peach for the summer. We recommend Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Heather Mauve ($25) and H&M Choc Therapy Lip Definer (around $9).
BLUSH Blushed cheeks aren’t exactly fallesque, but if you’re a blush lover, NARS’ Orgasm is the greatest option you could use.
HIGHLIGHTER The Balm’s Mary-Lou Highlighter ($24) will give you the greatest glow, and with a light hand, it’s still fall appropriate.
BEAUTY SPONGE The Beauty Blender ($20) or any other dupe is great for blending in foundation and making it look airbrushed.
AN EYEBROW KIT Anastasia Brow Wiz ($21) and the Body Shop’s Brow Kit ($18.5) are all you need for perfect brows.
DARK NAILS We recommend OPI’s Black Cherry ($9). One coat looks purple-y, and once you add a second coat, it gets much darker. You essentially have two colour options in one.
MOISTURIZER We recommend Garnier’s SkinActive Ultra-Lift AntiWrinkle Firming Night Cream ($15) for anti-ageing and Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Moisturizer Pink Grapefruit ($7) for dry skin.

WHY AN ‘IDENTITY CRISIS’ CAN HELP YOU GROW? by Amina El Ghandour
In this article, I would like to explore the idea of need to leave room to the human within you. If you ‘identity’ that is fed to us as children, and that we think you are suffering from an identity crisis, take bear, often without question, into adulthood. the opportunity and try to observe the world with In a world that suffers from ‘group thought’ and discourages independent thinkers, the notion of an ‘identity’ needs to be revisited. We are conditioned to think we need to have a sense of identity. But what really is this ‘identity’ we refer to? It is the by-product of definitions that we assimilate from the outer world and make us ‘who we are’. Faith, tradition, political views, etc. - all dictate the ‘identity’ and naturally affect our world view.
no preconceived notions, and you shall grow in the following ways: 1. YOU CONNECT DEEPLY WITH OTHERS
When you perceive the world rigidly through your ‘identity’, you unconsciously categorise people and events. You can easily judge others as good, bad, right and wrong. This builds walls between you and the people you interact with. You fail to connect with others on the human level and only connect through We, hence, encounter the world and go through life your social facades or what we call ‘identities’. constantly labelling ourselves as ‘this’ and ‘not that’! However, when you overcome your attachment to But the reality is that as young individuals, with little an ‘identity’ and perceive people and experiences real experience in the world, these tags do not really that life brings your way neutrally, you nurture the define us. We spend most of our lives assimilating human within you. You become more compassionate values that do not necessarily belong to us, and make and emphatic rather than judgemental. You can them ‘who we are’, warding off other possibilities of connect more deeply and strongly to others because existence. your connection would be based on shared human experiences, not social constructs. Values we grow with can be part of who we are but they cannot be all we are. Therefore, while you 2. YOU EARN WHO YOU ARE harbour ties with your culture, faith and society, you 50 Identity October 2016
As you free yourself of your social façade, you are free to become who you really are - the product of your own experiences. You grow as a person from your own emotional and thought processes. As an Egyptian who had studied and lived in the UK for 10 years, I find it hard and equally liberating to pin myself down to definitions. Yes, I’m partially my nationality, my faith and my culture. But I’m more as well: my experiences, my thoughts and my outlook on life. My outlook has evolved as I observed, I felt and I learned. Perhaps the experience of living abroad teased the ‘identity’ out of me. But in all cases, detaching from the identity can be liberating and enlightening. For me, I no longer find an urge to fit in a category. I am confident to exist outside categorization. 3. YOU ARE FREE AND HAPPY
your calling. The identity dictates your options in life, but the human follows his passion with confidence and zeal. I am not advocating here that every person sheds their skin completely and starts to behave in a way contrary to their cultural values. In fact, I believe appreciating one’s culture is cherishing an important part of one’s self. Hence, everyone needs to act in a way that feels comfortable for them, but refrain from observing the world through the spectacles of an ‘identity’. We should observe the world simply as human beings who are open to experiencing and learning, who relate to others as a feeling beingswho have compassion for their pain, empathy for their struggles and bliss for their joy. When you choose love and kindness, you are nourished as a person – and you can only foster these feelings when you perceive others as simply human without tags.
When you nurture the human in you, not the ‘identity’ that only sees itself and others in a limited way, you become happy. You are happy because you are free, and your connection to yourself and the So, the next time you feel you have an identity world around you is real. With a liberated and strong crisis, bless it and make it an opportunity to free sense of self, you are more likely to reach your full yourself. Observe the world without judgment potential. You touch on your emotions better and and earn your own sense of self. open up to ideas more. Through this, you can find October 2016 Identity 51

DIGITAL IDENTITY VS. REAL LIFE IDENTITY by Nuha El Zubeir

The truth is, whilst it certainly does provide us with a lot of entertainment, the powers of social media networks extend far beyond that. You get to create an online persona that’s far different from who you are in real life, and also get exposed to everyone else’s online-induced personality. Whether we like it or not, and whether we admit it or not, these things influence us on subconscious levels, and we can see its impact every day.
platform, and are asked to write a username or post a profile picture, you’re given a chance to customize people’s perception of you. You can show your otherwise dimmed creativity with a witty username or Twitter handle, or put a goofy picture to show your playful side (or a perfectly polished picture on one of your best days to hide your flaws). Online accounts can be as private or public as you want them to be; you can really do anything with them. They offers you a sense of protection and security, and a degree of anonymity because you’re behind your computer or mobile screen. That’s why many people feel like they can be “more themselves” online.
But is that really who they are? Doesn’t our true self HOW DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE ONLINE FROM appear despite social restrictions and our external REAL LIFE environment, and not how it is without? HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IMPACTS US IN REAL LIFE The Internet, globalization and the insanely fast communication technology we have today are doubleedged swords, ready to swing at you or protect you at any given time. Social media networks have taught us that it’s okay to have unpopular opinions, and gave us a positive push towards self-expression. It also exposed us to so much content that we understand people better now. It’s also provided us with a great source of entertainment, but at what cost? No matter how confident you are, or sure of yourself and secure in who you are, social media networks influence you. You soon realize that everyone is fake. Your birthday comes up, and everyone you haven’t spoken to in the last year is suddenly sending you kissy-face emojis and telling you how much they love you – only because Facebook told them they should. The Instagram filters do wonders to conceal what you don’t like about yourself, or what you think others won’t accept about you. Because everyone gets to create a perfect image of their selves. In turn, you recognize how fake everyone is, there’s no way to deny that we often compare ourselves with others. This ultimately gives rise to body image issues and in real life, giving them the confidence they need to self-esteem issues that have no end. Whilst everyone rise above social intimidation and express their selves is hiding behind the Instagram filters, they’re blinded freely. by other people’s “perfection”. On the other hand, your identity isn’t as organic anymore. You’ve created it. Whilst this can still be an empowering tool, many say they try to cover their flaws, such as their acne or body fat. I’m guilty of that too, and what we hide is more indicative of our identity than what we show.
The Internet and social media networks also impact our everyday language. The words we choose to use say a lot about us, and with instant messaging and abbreviations, our slang IRL is just like it is online. We say OMG instead of “Oh My God”, or FYI instead of “For Your Information” as well as using words like “on fleek” which originated and spread online. It became Others try to “be weird” just because they think being a norm to talk in the same abbreviations we use “weird” and “different” is in right now. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FROM A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE by Haya Akbik
Women around the world face the threat of losing one of their most important body parts due to breast cancer. This is why companies and NGOs all over the world collaborate together to help raise awareness through various campaigns which help bring breast cancer under the spotlight. To establish their goal of protecting as many women as possible, various campaigns are held during October every year to ensure that this goal is fulfilled. FONOUN WARDEYA Winning the battle against breast cancer, Egyptian Reham El-Sonbaty used her artistic talents to target women of special needs who didn’t have access to TV and online campaigns. She used portraits to illustrate breast cancer, and sign language to further explain the threat of breast cancer and the importance of checkups. Reham’s goal is to spread awareness to women with hearing impairment, who lack knowledge about this very important topic. She holds exhibitions that welcome all women. And, she introduces a new way to educate them about breast cancer. The proceeds go to women who can’t afford their own consultation.
THE BURJUMAN SAFE & SOUND BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN The Safe & Sound campaigns have been dominating the Middle East for 18 consecutive years. With a solid goal of spreading awareness, the campaigns held by Safe & Sound get more creative and useful each year. But to guarantee that the awareness is ongoing throughout the year, Safe & Sound app was introduced in the UAE and outside it. The app allows participants to run, walk and track their progress as a means to spread awareness as well as donate money directly to Al Jalila Foundation and Brest Friends using the app’s built in payment gateway. 56 Identity October 2016
XIXILI L LOVE MY LIFE In support of their NGO partner, “Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BSWA)”, XIXILI hosted the 10th annual breast cancer awareness campaign in Utama shopping centre in Malaysia. The 5 day campaign hosted many beauty and fashion retailers, as well as hair stylists to perform several on ground activities that aim to emphasize the importance of “loving yourself first”. The activities included photo booths, beauty makeovers, charity dry haircuts, pink fashion shows, dance performances, public donations and fundraising. During the campaign, BSWA brought its PINK MURNI Truck, along with several volunteers and process. In addition, 286 women were further taught survivors to the site. This got 114 women to perform to perform their monthly Breast Self-Exam (BSE), their Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) with the on-site which was a major awareness spread. medical team, discovering 4 suspicious lumps in the
BERLIN HOCKEY PLAYERS WEAR PINK The Eisbären of Germany team played in pink for two games. The campaign was originated in North America, and was established to achieve two main goals. The first one was to get the women to get their checkups done as soon as possible to prevent any tumour, if diagnosed, from growing. The campaign’s second goal was to raise money that can be used in researches of how to beat breast cancer in the long run.
THE PINK RIBBON HIGHWAY In an attempt to take creativity to a whole new level, Icelandic ad agency, Brandenburg, and the Icelandic Cancer Society decided to develop an original awareness campaign. It went as far as painting a looping highway in bright pink to resemble a pink ribbon, which is considered to be the international symbol of the battle against breast cancer. Even though it can only be fully seen from the air, no one can drive over this pink highway without paying attention to the attractive bright colour.
7TH PINK 80’S & 90’S ZUMBATHON The Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt is constantly coming up with ideas and events to spread awareness about breast cancer. This event particularly stood out with its unique idea of an 80’s and 90’s Zumba dance. The event’s theme required the participants to relive the 80’s and 90’s music, funky clothes, games, photo booths and accessories. Of course, all the proceeds went directly to help the patients who couldn’t afford treatment and to create more awareness campaigns. October 2016 Identity 57

11 WISHES FOR IDENTITY by Nuha El Zubeir
As we celebrate Identity’s 11th anniversary, it’s reflection time. We were told from a very young age, that if the clock reads 11:11, we must make a wish. Although Identity Magazine has reached heights, moved people and helped so many express themselves, there are many things the team wishes for its future.
2. Identity has gained great momentum in Egypt, but there’s always room for expansion. We want to expand to the Middle East, and hopefully even internationally, becoming number 1.
1. Although the Identity Team is small, we all wish for a bigger office and the luxuries of a larger work environment. Who doesn’t want a glass building overlooking the Nile?
3. Being in Zamalek has its perks, but sometimes the hassle of living in Egypt gets to us. Rola Kamel, CEO and Founder of Identity, would love nothing more than to move the headquarters of Identity to London, where we can have breakfast at Aubaine and enjoy Hyde Park whenever we feel like it.
4. Identity Magazine started as a monthly print magazine and a political pamphlet, then expanded to the online arena just three years ago with articles posted daily. Now we wish to add videos alongside the written pieces online, to both entertain, inform and convey messages to the readers through different mediums. 58 Identity October 2016
5. Identity’s arms are open to local celebrities but we wish to photo-shoot Hollywood actors/actresses, allowing Egyptian talents to style and photograph the whole shoot.
7. This may be a wish, but it also may be a future plan. The Identity Team wishes to open several other companies under the mother company. The rest is a surprise. 6. We really want to use more designers and photographers, because not only will that help the designers get more work done, it’ll also make the designs more diverse and creative.
8. Identity can, and hopefully will be, a platform for talents. Egypt’s visual arts talents, musical talents, and theatre lovers are underrated and under equipped – and Identity wishes to change that.
9. We wish to expand our team and discover as much talent so we can increase the pages in the magazine and add more content to the monthly publication.
10. Initially, Identity has always wanted to empower women in Egypt. We wish to launch women’s empowerment campaigns and encourage women to reach their full potential despite gender restrictions.
11. Our editors want Identity to become the EgyptianBuzzFeed, relating to the public and managing to entertain whilst still leaving a profound impact on people. October 2016 Identity 59
