DECEMBER

J

Just when you think the next year will not top the current year, life surprises you. While we’re sitting at the tail of 2018, all we can think of is 2018 was an interesting year, to say the least. Like every other year, it had its ups and downs, but unlike previous years, the ups were life changing.

When I was sitting with the team to discuss how we will put an end to the year, we were overwhelmed with ideas. We had so many ideas to the point of deciding to have this supplement along with the magazine. We wanted to shed light on each and every accomplishment that happened, but even with the supplement, we could not mention every achievement. The achievements varied – from individual work, to companies excelling at what they do, the entertainment business revolting and changing the industry, as we know it, to hotels changing our concept of hospitalities. As for Identity Magazine, I am proud of our own achievements. We celebrated our thirteenth year in the market, and we proved that we are not slowing down anytime soon. I hope 2019 is better for us, and for you. Here’s to many years of success.

Have you ever tried Latin American food before? Whether your answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’, you better head to Tabla Luna! 5. Sabai Sabai

6. Eish W Gebna

If trying out new international cuisines is your thing, then this restaurant should be on your list. “Not a care in the world” is what Sabai Sabai stands for in Thai language, and that’s exactly what they offer with the contentment of the served Asian food and blissful coziness of the atmosphere.

Watch out all cheese addicts out there, something to feed your addiction is cooking here. Cheese fusions are heavenly at Eish w Gebna, and their food selection is just brilliant. You’re going to know what falling in love from the first “bite” is all about in the heart of the Fifth Settlement.

7. Battaw

8. The White Owl

Battaw represents a modern successful twist on the Egyptian cuisine that is nothing less than revolutionary. Forget about nostalgia and the traditional dishes; Battaw comes with a new concept that will definitely impress food lovers. 10. Sea Salt Bakery & Cafe

Designed as an apartment of five spaces, Aeon is a high-end luxurious international cuisine complementing our beloved Korba. The name means endless time, and that’s exactly what you’ll wish to have the moment you step inside, with the ambiance of the Great Gatsby and the heavenly food cooked to perfection.

11. Zulu

12. Buffalo Wings and Rings

It’s a big shame that we’re not familiar with the cuisines of our own continent, that’s why Zulu decided to step in and educate us about South African food. Located in Maadi and run by a South African couple, it is a whole new adventurous experience that brings the yummy traditional plates of South Africa to Cairenes.

Located at the Radisson Blue, this is your typical sports bar similar to those you can find in the British capital. By optimizing the experience of watching sports through serving suitable, delicious and easy to eat food, Buffalo Wings and Rings is definitely a pioneer in this area. The deep flavors, fresh ingredients and energetic atmosphere made Buffalo worthy of its place on this list.

13. Gringo’s Burrito Grill

14. Speakeasy

Saving its place since almost 2012, it wasn’t fair to skip Gringo’s just because it has been around for a long time! This is by far one of the best places out there serving authentic Mexican food and it succeeded in preserving the same quality of food and level of service since its opening. They now have 3 branches in Maadi, Zamalek and Fifth Settlement for the love of nachos!

Located in Heliopolis, Speakeasy is an elegant venue with an exceptional Mediterranean cuisine. The menu includes original dishes that are hardly found anywhere else. Not to mention that the restaurant de jour is located inside a 1920’s historical villa that just levels up their game alongside with the Cigar Lounge.

15 Chicken and Ribs

We apologize if we made you hungry. Now let the food scouting begin before the year ends.

The sister of Butcher’s Burger is an underrated family member and we decided to take some action. The place has a menu that includes a huge variety of comfort foods, a very cozy and casual ambiance and excdellent quality of service. The twins represent American food at its best.

THE BEST EGYPTIAN MOVIES OF

2018

by Aya Aboshady

What a crazy ride has 2018 been, right?! It was such a long year full of ups and downs, awesome trends and insane moments! But apart from all of that, this year also offered great movies, the types that always stay with us no matter what. From the deeply emotional dramatic ones to the funny comedies and thrilling crimes, Egyptian cinema has presented so many films that are worth watching, and that’s why we’ve decided that it’s the perfect timing to bring you a list of the 9 best Egyptian movies released in 2018.

#3 KARMOUZ WAR/HARB KARMOUZ

#4 DIAMOND DUST/TORAB EL MAS

Harb karmouz, written and directed by Peter Mimi and Mohamed El Sobky, is one of the highest grossing Egyptian motion pictures of all times! That movie was outstanding on so many levels; from the cinematography to the touching story of the loyal and brave police officer played by Amir Karara, who throughout the entire film was trying to protect his people and stand for what is right against all odds!

Based on Ahmed Morad’s very popular bestselling thriller Torab Al Mas, and directed by Marwan Hamed, this movie features so many of our beloved actors like Asser Yassin, Sherin Reda, Maged El Kedwani and more. It is about a pharmaceutical salesman, Taha, whose world turns upside down, with so many dangerous secrets getting revealed following the mysterious murder of his father. And all of that definitely involves a small glass bottle of diamond dust that deserves all the hype it got the whole year!

#5 FORK AND KNIFE/SHOKA W SEKINA

#6 INDUCED LABOR/TALQ SENAEE

Asser Yassin, Menna Shalaby and Eyad Nassar aka ‘Everybody’s favorite trio’ all star in Adam Abd El Ghaffar’s outstanding film which aired for the first time during the 2018 Gouna Film Festival. The story tackles marriage and relationships from different aspects. From love and betrayal to sex and romance; Fork and Knife is really a different movie that is incredibly interesting to watch, definitely one of the best this year!

Written and directed by Khaled Diab, this comedy drama was unexpectedly one of the best this year. With Maged El Kedwani’s great sense of humor along with the beautiful Horeya Farghaly’s awesome acting skills, Talq Senaee was a very relatable film narrating the story of an Egyptian family and their desperate attempts at acquiring an American visa at the embassy.

#7 EYEBROWS/MATE’LASHA’N EL HAGEB

#8 WHAT COMES AROUND/EL GAM’EYA

Eyebrows or Mate’lasha’n El Hageb, directed by Tamer Ashry and written by Haitham Dabbour, features two of the very talented young Egyptian actresses, Asmaa Abouzeid and Mariam El Khosht. It recites the tale of a Burka wearing young woman as she discovers throughout the movie things she never knew about herself, including that she hides more than just her face and body underneath.

Set in Egypt’s Road El Farag, written and directed by Reem Saleh, the 79 minute documentary revolves around how an assembly or El Gam’eya changed the lives of six poor people who are in a constant struggle with life and its responsibilities. Such a simple movie with a very strong message that is worth all the applaud!

#9 KARMA Written and directed by Khaled Youssef, the movie Karma tackles the different aspects of two men’s lives and personalities; one is a Muslim and the other is a Christian, both characters are portrayed by Amr Saad, with the rest of the cast being Khaled El Sawy, Ghada Abd Elrazek and Zeina. The film also explores the relationship between the two men as each lives his life separately in suspicious conditions where corruption, politics and romance are also involved. Karma is seriously a very important movie that is more or less relatable to the Egyptian society and is so worth checking out! We honestly cannot wait for more from the Egyptian filmmakers for next year. 2018 has already shown us how Egyptian cinema has significantly raised its own bar, and we’re definitely looking forward to see it shine even more in the future! The 2018 Egyptian Trends by Aya Aboshady

As we all know, the Egyptian society -mainly the social media active part of it-, hardly skips a trend! From the hilarious memes, the weirdest discoveries and the great artworks to the incredible scandals and trending obsessions; 2018 has been full of every single one of those and more. This year, like any previous one, partly revolved around the good entertainment that usually makes one’s life a bit lighter. For that reason we brought you the 11

10 IDENTITY

Egyptian trends that significantly grabbed all the attention for quite some time during 2018.

1. Meghan & Harry

The former Suits’ actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s beautiful wedding ceremony was literally the talk of the universe for some time this year. However, Egyptians did not let this one slide without creating thousands of memes about it; 10 thousand

about the wedding and another 100 thousand about how ‘deeply in love’ the couple always look. It’s quite funny actually!

2# Gouna Film Festival

The second edition of the Gouna Film Festival (GFF) launched this year and our timelines were filled with nothing but the amazing dresses and the beautiful films. Also, the fact that Patrick Dempsey, Sylvester Stallone and Owen Wilson made their appearances was mind blowing. GFF was seriously a great celebration of national and international filmmaking, especially in the Middle East!

3# Enti Ay Kalam

Just reading the subheading immediately made it stick in your head, right?! Tamim Younes’ hit was everybody’s favourite song for a while since not one social media platform skipped the tune! From how hilarious the idea of it being a one liner to the upbeat trendy 80s music, as well as the video itself; the hit was one of the greatest trends of 2018!

4# The Kiki Challenge

Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding? Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me! It’s almost certain that every group of friends has at least one or two people who had actually done the Kiki Challenge. All social media platforms In the summer of this year, all social media platforms were full of random people getting out of their cars in the middle of the road to dance to Drake’s In My Feelings! Celebrities like Dorra, Yasmine Raees, Dina El Sherbiny and more joined the wave as well!

5# Egypt in the World Cup

Because Egyptians are known for their football passion and most importantly because Egypt qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, June and July of this year were ALL about football! However, unfortunately with our national team dramatically losing one game after another, people everywhere were torn between their huge disappointment and trying not to crush the players. Tbh it was such a bummer!

6# Mo Salah’s Maldives’ Photos

Who could forget Mo Salah’s famous Instagram coconut photo? After the World Cup, the Egyptian footballer went on holiday to the Maldives and posted a series of photos from the trip. Needless to say, social media went crazy with memes about Salah’s pictures that he even pointed it out, it was hilarious!

7# David Schwimmer being a Theft Suspect

This one was insane! Trying to catch him, Blackpool’s police department has posted a snapshot of a video showing a man stealing an energy drinks box from a restaurant. The thing is the man looked IDENTICAL to Ross Geller from Friends and a series of comments with some of the popular series’ references has broken out that even the police department’s account and David Schwimmer himself participated in the wave!

8# Amr Diab and Dina El Sherbiny

Actually this one started at the end of 2017 and strongly continued throughout this year with social media literally having nothing to talk about but the couple for around 9 months straight! From the shippers to the haters, Amr Diab and Dina El Sherbiny aka ‘Borg El 7out’ were and kind of still are the talk of the town. However, we wish the happy couple a great life nevertheless!

9# Alexander The Great’s Tomb

This one was both interesting and terrifying at the same time! Around the middle of the year, a mysterious tomb was found in Alexandria, Egypt and for some reason the whole world was anticipating the reveal as they thought it belonged to the long lost Alexander the Great; rumours of the liquid found inside being world ending started to emerge from there. However, none of this turned out to be true in the end!

10# The Sergio Ramos War

When the entire Egyptian nation came together as one! In May 2018, Real Madrid’s defender Sergio Ramos severely injured our one and only Mo Salah in the Liverpool vs Real Madrid Champions League final, threatening the possibilities of his participation in the Russia 2018 World Cup. Ever since, it’s been Sergio Ramos vs Egyptians forever! It was even said that some fans actually managed to get the player’s phone number and sent him so much hate that he had to change it...Woah!

11# The Lunar Eclipse

In July 2018, the world witnessed the first total lunar eclipse since 2011. It was also the longest lunar eclipse in the 21st century, lasting for four hours! And of course, Egyptian went crazy about this, taking amazing pictures of the moon and posting them. Many people went out to several areas around town to watch the lunar eclipse with their friends. Even though it’s December and 2018 is not totally over yet, looking back at how hilarious, interesting and fun our Egyptian trends have been is still hella nostalgic. Don’t you think?

This year has been the year of the rising stars – and with the launch of the OPPO F9, OPPO collaborated with Egypt’s hottest rising stars; Mohamed El Sharnouby, Huda El Mufti and Khaled Anwar. The three stars have been making a name for themselves over the last couple of years, but when they appeared together in the hit show “Ka’eno Embareh”, the stars definitely showed viewers that they are the up and coming stars to keep an eye on! Each of the stars does represent a major key point of the OPPO F9 – they steal everyone’s attention, just like the phone, and they always look elegant, unique, and are always ready for action. The OPPO F9 comes in three unique different gradient designs, which each represents one of the stars – Sunrise Red, Twilight Blue, and Starry Purple, with inspiration coming from nature – sunrise, twilight and starry skies. The Sunrise Red design, just like El Sharnouby, is loud, yet elegant and demands attention. The Twilight Blue, like Anwar, is calm, yet unique and youthful. As for the Starry Purple, it is the diva of the three designs, just like Huda! Additionally, the OPPO F9 design has a waterfall screen to make the display as great as ever. Looks and designs aside, we all know phones and actors are all about the performance. The OPPO F9 does not fail in that department either. The F9 has made breakthroughs in fast charging with its “VOOC flash charge” which provides “5-min charge, 2-hourt talk” performance and is one of the fastest and safest charging technologies in the industry. F9 is also the first phone with fast charging technology in its price segment. With the similarities between the stars and the F9 being made clear, we sat down with the stars of OPPO to discuss their work, present and future, and to know more about them. We started with Mohamed El Sharnouby, the singer and actor. With a movie, two TV series, a song and a number of concerts – including a few with the one and only Omar Khairat – El Sharnouby has been one of the busiest people in the entertainment industry this year. So how did the 23 year old manage to achieve all this success in not only a short time, but at the same time? “Time management is the essence for me. I force myself to organize my day and manage my time very precisely. We all waste time every day on

16 IDENTITY

little things without even realizing it. Like waiting for our phones to finish charging, for instance.” El Sharnouby continues, “It takes about 2 to 3 hours to charge your phone, and during those hours, I could literally finish a whole project instead of just waiting for my phone to finish charging. That is why I agreed without hesitation to be the face of OPPO in this campaign. If I can have a working phone in 5 minutes of charging, I’ll take it!” We later had a little chat with Khaled Anwar, who rose to fame during the hit Ramadan series “Haza el Masa’a”, which some would argue was the top series in 2017. Following his breakthrough success, Anwar took 2018 by storm by working in, not one, but three TV series. He appeared in two Ramadan hits, “Abo Omar El-Masry” alongside Ahmed Ezz, and “Awalem Khafeya” with the iconic Adel Imam. Unlike El Sharnouby, Anwar has more of an introverted personality, which he spoke about, “I spend most of my time on my phone; from taking pictures and selfies to document my memories, to even playing video games. I’m a very visual person, and that was the reason I was attracted to the OPPO F9 – a waterdrop screen with great visuals, and a kickass camera – what more could I ask for?” Our final chat was with Huda el Mufti. In the age of social media, models can quickly lose their relevancy, but only a few stand out; and Huda el Mufti is one of them! Huda became an iconic model in just a few years – she even graced our covers at Identity before – but the star did not stop there. Huda made her acting debut in Ramadan of 2017, also with Khaled Anwar, in “Haza El Masa’a”, and appeared with Yousra in her 2018 Ramadan series “Ladina Aqwal Okhra”. Just like the OPPO F9, Huda’s look is unique and always turns heads. Her look and sense of style quickly made her a fashion icon, and you would think that her first major national ad campaign as an actress –not a model – would be of a fashion brand, not a phone brand. Huda commented on that saying, “Fashion is evolving, and technology is now becoming a main pillar in fashion. The OPPO F9 is more than just a phone; its design is truly a piece of art. I believe that OPPO are leading the path to officially placing phones, which are now essentials, on the fashion map!”

WHY OPPO REMAINS THE COMPANY TO BEAT IN 2018! by Raghda El-Sayed

If you’re an avid reader of Identity Magazine, you might remember that we started this year with a special issue featuring OPPO and their accomplishments for 2017. We’re now ending the year, and OPPO still remains on top, with no signs of slowing down. How was this year even better than the last year for OPPO? We don’t mean to brag, but we can say that Identity might have been a good luck charm for the brand. OPPO STARTED THE YEAR WITH A SIZZLING HOT BANG In January of 2018, OPPO started the year strong with the release of the OPPO F5 Red Edition launch, where they had Amina Khalil be the face of the phone. To celebrate the launch of the Red Edition, OPPO had Amina Khalil grace our cover at Identity Magazine for a special “Best of 2017” January issue. Additionally, OPPO threw an unforgettable launch event at SASS restaurant, with a Red-and-Black theme and attended by Egypt’s top influencers and VIPs.

20 IDENTITY

OPPO THEN WENT TO RUSSIA The highlight of the year had to be, hands down, the World Cup, and OPPO did not miss the chance to be there! Yes, OPPO sponsored the National team and became the official smartphone sponsor for the Egyptian National team. Since OPPO are not selfish people, they let the team supporters send messages to the National team in a campaign that truly inspired everyone.

OPPO LAUNCHED YET ANOTHER PHONE FROM THE F SERIES – THE OPPO F9 Are you counting? That’s a lot of phones launched in the same year under the F-series!! The F9 was launched at yet another unforgettable launch event, but this time it was the Mena House with the pyramids approving their location choice. The F9 introduces the VOOC flash charge technology in the F series –something many OPPO users have been waiting for. OPPO ENDS THE YEAR WITH FASHION, FASHION, AND MORE FASHION!

OPPO LAUNCHED THE F7 AND QUICKLY BECAME THE TALK OF THE C-TOWN – ANY BEYOND The F series became OPPO’s most anticipated phone release, and with a larger than life launch party in Uptown Cairo, the F7 quickly became the most wanted release of 2018. OPPO did not stop at Cairo; however, OPPO went beyond and made it to Sahel during the OPPO F7 Youth Edition launch, where they had a selfie workshop by top photographer Abdallah Sabry. Top influencers attended the event, as well as selfie queens and kings – like Huda El Mufti and Khaled Anwar.

OPPO sponsored this year’s Cairo Fashion Festival season 10, and just like their previous year, they went beyond regular sponsorship. This year, OPPO collaborated with everyone’s favourite bags brand ZAAM, and for the first time ever, introduced his full clothing collection – OPPOCALYPSE. This collaboration is one of OPPO’s ongoing support of fashion as well as youth since their launch in Egypt. What’s 2019 holding up for OPPO? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’re fairly positive that it would be even grander than 2018.

OPPO FOUND THE X AT ARMANI BURJ KHALIFA The beyond still continued with OPPO, where the revolutionary flagship Find X made its Middle East and Africa debut at the top of the highest hotel in the Middle East, and the world, Armani Burj Khalifa. Do we even need to say more?

1. Wunderlist/Habitica (To-Do List) Besides the creative name, Wunderlist is an interactive, synchronized to-do list. There are plenty of to-do list apps. What makes Wunderlist special is that it allows you to maintain checklists within a parent to-do list. Yet, the key feature of Wunderlist allows you to share a to-do list with others and even maintain a chat/comment section in it (similar to a comment section or a forum), enabling you and your coworkers to synergize. Wunderlist supports a PC version, which is in live sync with your mobile list via your account. Wunderlist’s Prominent Feature: Synchronized to-do list supporting various users

However, writing a to-do list can be boring and we all know that many of them don’t get ticked off. Habitica applies a brilliant twist on to-do lists, making it more interesting. Habitica turns making to-do lists into a mini-mobile game; managing your chores becomes a form of an RPG (role-playing game) where you level up after doing tasks and maintaining habit streaks. Though it can be a little bit confusing to get around at first, the sense of being rewarded and leveling up when you manage your tasks is totally worth it, turning business into fun. Habitica’s Prominent Feature: Compelling, entertaining interface for managing a to-do list, easier support for daily, habitual tasks.

2. Trello/Slacks (Project Management)

Trello is a well-established name when it comes to project management apps and a must-have for any entrepreneur. Trello offers the option of juggling different projects. Normally, it’s a free app, though its strongest features are only available in the paid version. There are various payment options provided to users. Trello provides better user interface compared to other project management apps. It can be accessed on your laptop or PC as well as your mobile, allowing you to check updates with your coworkers on the go. Trello’s Prominent Feature: Assigning tasks to coworkers and follow-up On the other hand, Slacks is more of a project management messaging app. It allows you to contact your teammates by creating a form of a proxy network, keeping you in touch with your coworkers on the go. Slack’s comparative advantage, compared to Trello and most project management apps, is allowing you to incorporate various apps into it, such as to-do lists from Wunderlist, previously mentioned, and Google Docs. Which provides a wider option for third-party apps sharing. Slack’s Prominent Feature: Messaging your coworkers, incorporates third-party apps into it

3. Wallet

(By BudgetBakers)/Spending Tracker (Tracking Revenues and Expenses) Regardless of any altruistic motives, a business’s primary goal is to maximize profit. In doing so, any business owner tweaks with this equation:

Higher Revenue - Lower Expenses = Higher Profit The simplicity in the name does deliver, as it is very simple to use, rendering it one of the most userfriendly, financial apps out there, and also more visually compelling. However, the free version provides the option of syncing with one bank account only and managing a maximum of 3 different accounts. The paid version provides managing more accounts and wider sync options, along with adding users, and controlling the degree of their access, to manage the wallet with them. Wallet’s Prominent Feature: Analysis reports for finances, managing different accounts easily Spending Tracker, on the other hand, is more userfriendly compared to other mobile apps. It is more convenient for the earlier stages of a business, due to its simpler interface and calculations methods. What it lacks in diversity of function it provides in functionality and simplicity. Spending Tracker’s Prominent Feature: Simple, userfriendly interface, simple revenue analysis, features provided for free

4. Evernote/Microsoft OneNote (Digital Notebooks)

Evernote is a cross-platform notebook application. It allows you to manage multiple notebooks and their notes on your mobile and refine them on your PC later on. Additionally, you can even share these notebooks with colleagues and discuss it with them, even granting them access to edit these notes. Evernote allows you to incorporate voice notes, photos, and even location. Not to mention that it allows you to add a checklist within any notes, with minimal to moderate word editing facilities. The free version offers enough services already; the paid version delivers more storage to store synced dates per month. Evernote’s Prominent Feature: Simple to use, most features are provided for free On the other hand, Microsoft OneNote is a powerhouse application when it comes to digital notebooks; however, the downside of OneNote is that in order to sync the mobile app with your PC version, both have to be paid versions. OneNote Prominent Feature: Wider range of available options compared to other digital notebook apps

The 2018 Egypt ’s Startup

TRENDS & INVESTMENT WRAP-UP! by Nouran Ghannam from Startup Galaxy A perfect dinner party always has many plates on the table. You’ve got the main course and perhaps, salads and appetizers too. There’s always room for smaller bites like sambusa though, right? Like a dinner party, the Egyptian economy is composed of big and known business industries. However, rising is the startups sector. Smaller, but albeit for economies, very filling. Ever had enough sambusa? Probably not. Similarly, the Egyptian economy couldn’t have had enough of startups this year! According to the World Bank, Egypt’s real GDP grew by 5.3% in 2018, up from 4.2% in 2017. A noticeable portion of investment is believed to be due to startups, especially in Transportation, Food & Ordering, Shopping (or E-commerce) and Business Services. This investment is also forming four trends in the next few years.

1. BUSES: Investments in Alternative Transportation This year, Careem and Uber introduced a “new” method of transportation: buses. Uber has launched Uber Bus in Egypt, the first market worldwide, and Careem is also testing buses in Cairo and 13 other cities across Egypt. Uber and Careem were not pivotal in creating such a trend. Much smaller local startups were the pioneers in bringing this idea to Egypt. In April, Swvl raised $8 million in Series A funding, one of the largest tickets Egyptian startups have received. Buseet, launched in 2016, has grabbed an undisclosed amount and vows to solve the commuting problem. Additions to Cairo’s internal bus systems, connecting cities and booking online are: Tawseela, Eazy, Tazcara and others. Booking a seat in someone else’s car through carpooling startups has also been on the rise. Traffic is clearly becoming unbearable, and that instigated a couple of millenials to invest their time to innovate in transportation. The sizable investment coming in to Egyptian startups in transportation and

specifically buses shows that we’ve got a new trend coming: alternative commuting through private bus companies utilizing technology.

2. FOOD & ORDERING: Investments to Avoid Call Centers If you’re moving around, then you’re probably eating too, right? In Egypt, there are sub-trends in Food & Beverage. First, there’s an increase in numbers and investment in food ordering apps. Otlob’s foreign competitors have arrived: Glovo and UberEats. (Uber again, yes, they’re just loving Egypt this year). Elmenus is a local Egyptian startup that received a $1.5 million investment end of 2017 from Algebra Ventures; they launched their online food ordering option in 2018. The second sub-trend is grocery apps, where you can order your daily vegetables, milk and other necessities through apps like Knockmart, Goodsmart, Weelo, Gomla Online, El5odary, Fakahany and more. Finally, the third sub-trend in ordering food online in Egypt is home cooks and gourmet chefs. Most notable startups are the duo GetMumm and Yumamia, where you can order homemade meals.

3. E-COMMERCE: Online Shopping Malls and Offers Egypt has a large population, and despite internet penetration still hanging at a low 37.8%, that percentage converts into one of the largest markets in the region. Many of the known shopping websites such as Souq and Jumia enjoy a hefty chunk from this. The government is getting involved with a National E-Commerce Strategy for Egypt as well as rumours of a new VAT tax on online transactions (not yet implemented at the time of writing this article). Worth mentioning in investment this year is La Reina, the online marketplace for renting designer dresses. The website raised $1 million in 2018 and consumers could offer their dress up for rent, while others can browse dresses available.

cash payments, which is still quite the biggest portion with a minority operating with credit card usage in the country. The second one is payment platforms and DCB (direct carrier billing). The biggest news in 2018 was TPAY, when A15 sold a 76% stake to Helius Investment Partners. In startup lingo, a dragon exit. Sahar Salama, the Founder of TPay Mobile expanded operations to most countries in the Middle East, as well as Turkey and Pakistan. An Exciting Year Ahead The biggest investment of the year 2018 was in September with Vezeeta, raising $12 million led by STV. Vezeeta has given patients the ability to check doctor recommendations and book faster.

Within e-commerce, other startups have emerged to service online shoppers. This year, startup elprices. com raised a total of $1.2 million, a tool for shoppers to compare the same product across different websites. In this category are also Yaoota and the mobile focused comparison startup, Btefrek.

4. DOING ONLINE BUSINESSES: Just Got Easier! In order for the e-commerce sector to grow, and the push for retail to go online in Egypt, there were two major trends in business-to-business (B2B), less experienced by end consumers. The first one is the rise of logistics companies: Voo, Bosta and the newest addition, Halan. These startups also handle

Egypt’s startup world is full of good news, but the reality is the death rate of startups in Egypt remains quite high. One of the startups mentioned in this article could already be dead by the time of publishing! Inflation has decreased the purchasing power of many, with private consumption, as part of the real GDP, actually decreasing from 4.2% to 3.9% in 2018 (World Bank Report). Egyptian entrepreneurs face multiple barriers too, according to the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor for Egypt (2017). The Egyptian government is expected to amend more policies to encourage the changes happening above. If you are interested in the startup world and ready to discover what’s happening, head to StartupsGalaxy. com, a free online directory of startups in Egypt and a blog for startup millennials. With over 200+ startups across 14 categories, you can download interesting apps, checkout marketplaces and most of all, give them a try. Until then, always check out and try smaller plates at dinner parties; you might just find your new favourite food, sambusa. IDENTITY 27
