Working on this issue, we had to gather all our courage and strength to get it out to the light. Different social taboos are a big ‘ no no’ at our end of the globe. You will notice a few unconventional ones in addition to the ones you already know. That is a mere reflection
of the different age groups working on it and different conceptions of taboos in general. We are all proud of our achievement and hope you enjoy reading it. We are crossing our fingers that it doesnt get banned in censorship though...Wish us luck!

UNSTEADY IN LOVE by Marwa Rakha
Dear Marwa, I’m madly in love with my boyfriend of 3 years. He’s kind, caring and loving like no other. The problem is he never stays put in a job for more than 4 months, which makes it impossible for us to settle down. I can’t face my family and worry that if we do get married, we won’t have a steady income. Please help. Dear Madly in Love, You did not clarify your boyfriend’s age, so I’m going to make several assumptions and reply accordingly.
My advice is: Remind him that his resume is not looking good with all the hopping around from job to ASSUMPTION 1: HE’S UNDER 25 If that is the case, then do not worry. In Egypt, it is job. You can also recommend a good career coach to totally normal for a fresh graduate to move between help him identify the right jobs for him and uncover jobs and try a few careers before he finds his true all the blind spots in his personality that are leading to his frequent moves. calling. I specifically said “in Egypt”, because life in Egypt does not help a man identify his strengths and talents until his mid-twenties. Probably, he has never had a summer job in his early teens or during his college years. Probably he studied a major because it sounded nice or prestigious. Many study majors based on their grades, regardless of their true passions. Give him time. He will eventually find out what he wants to do with his life, but until then, do not burden him with marriage and responsibilities. My advice is: Wait and see!
ASSUMPTION 3: HE’S OVER 30 If that is the case, then you have every right to be worried. He has not lasted enough in any job to make him an expert at it. He has not lasted long enough with any company to have a good record of recommendations, and at that age, most HR people and recruiting personnel will assume that something is wrong with that person’s level of commitment and responsibility. My advice is: A career coach is a must! Your boyfriend needs to find out why he is continuously failing to meet the requirements of a job or why he always has the urge to leave. It could be so many things starting with his own insecurities and fear of failure to total recklessness and irresponsibility.
ASSUMPTION 2: HE’S BETWEEN 25 AND 30 If that is the case, then you’re justifiably worried. But if your boyfriend does not quit his job before he finds another one, if he is managing to get a better job with In all cases, postpone any marriage plans until your a better salary, and if he knows how to get himself a boyfriend feels more confident about himself, his job, then maybe the previous phase is just dragging career and his future. on a little longer. Maybe he simply needs more time to find his perfect fit. 16 Identity November 2016

THE IMPACT OF CYBER BULLYING
Cyberbullying may include hurtful or threatening online messages, texts or emails; or spreading rumors about someone online. Research shows that cyberbullies tend to have more trouble with aggression, hyperactivity and drug use. Considering this profile, it seems that cyberbullying may be a problematic way that some teens cope with their own internal struggles. Cyberbullying is especially concerning, however, when adults cyberbully teens or children. A 2007 survey reported that 32% of teens had been contacted online by a total stranger, and that predators are common online.
There are steps that we can take to avoid online predators and bullies. Changing the settings for Anonymity can have a powerful effect on online profiles so that they are private and only behavior. In our daily face-to-face conversations, allowing people you are familiar with to access your making a negative comment has an immediate profiles is one way to protect yourself. For students, impact. On the internet, however, we are tucked informing a parent or trusted teacher or authority into a blanket of anonymity. victims. These cyberbullies have become a bigger problem with the spread of internet and technology usage. Cyberbullies may not know the full extent of the damage they inflict on their victims while hiding behind a screen, but the hurt they cause is very real.
Cyberbullying has been related to many different forms of psychological distress, especially among teenagers. A recent survey found that cyberbullying has increased among teens and preteens, who commonly use cell phones and the internet. One study from the University of California Los Angeles found that 75% of teens had experienced cyberbullying, while another study showed that 3 out of 4 teens had been cyberbullied over the course of a year. Victims of cyberbullying often feel vengeful, angry, or helpless, among other emotions like embarrassment, fear or self-blame. When teens are cyberbullied, they are less likely to trust their peers at school or to like attending school. This may be due to the fact that 85% of teens who are victims of cyberbullying 18 Identity November 2016

HOW TO COPE WITH JUDGMENTAL PEOPLE by Sarah Magdy
How do we react when others judge us for who we are? It’s interesting how we choose labels for each other. We decide that others aren’t quite the way they should be.
VARIETY MEAL UP TO 4-3 PERSONS
There’s quite a bit of hypocrisy and narrow mindedness here, in that we want to reject others as they are, but insist that others love and accept us the way we are. We all have people in our lives that unintentionally hurt us. Their words may sound harsh. We may feel judged. And they may question our choices so much that we feel emotionally unsafe around them. There are three ways we can cope with our hypercritical society; let’s check out some survival techniques to deal with judgmental people. 1 - SMILE AND WAVE Don’t take things personally; don’t poison yourself with things that have little or nothing to do with who you are. If someone you know is judging you harshly, know that it is probably because they judge themselves harshly too. They speak to you in the same way they speak to themselves. Just smile and wave. 2 - BE COMPASSIONATE Yes. Be compassionate and kind. When people are feeling down, unhappy, lost and disconnected from themselves and the world around them, that’s when they begin to project their own darkness onto the people they interact with, that’s when they start judging the world around them. It’s when we are unhappy with ourselves that we begin to judge, blame and criticize those around us. It’s a psychological state. Just be aware of it and compassionate attitude will be easily practiced. 3 - FREE YOURSELF OF NEEDING THEIR APPROVAL OR SUPPORT We all know at least one hater; they usually spend an excessive amount of time following your every move. Hating can be an inside job too. 20 Identity November 2016
Only
You don’t have to adopt what they tell you; don’t take anything personally. Nothing other people do or say is because of you. It is always because of them. 4 - NEVER GET DEFENSIVE Don’t waste your energy defending yourself; just accept that they have a different view of life. Only share your views after you have acknowledged theirs, and then change the subject. Keep your peace by refusing to respond to rude or judgmental sentiments. They won’t understand anyway.
KEEPS EVERYONE HAPPY.

ADDICTIONS, ADDICTS AND ABUSE
Moreover, we need to function properly. Weakness is unacceptable. Instead of facing one’s own flaws, turning to the abuse of substance or another tool is a welcoming relief promising factor. An escape of something we are not able to face. A short-term solution with fatal long-term consequences. Anything that is used or done regularly and excessively turns into an addiction. And then it’s too late. The damage is done. “People struggling with addiction have a hard time coping with life,” says Dr. Imane Tarkhan, Clinical Psychologist and Founder & Head of The Counseling Unit for Psychological Development (CUPD) in Maadi. “They resort to substance abuse as an escape and a coping mechanism. They usually lack the ability to properly cope with reality.” What sounds like a habit develops into an illness which is evident in the brain function. Addictive behaviour is a trigger that sends out wrong signals to the reward system of the brain. They activate different messengers that create a feeling of wellbeing and euphoria which tell the brain that a certain substance or tool is a positive stimulus. If this stimulus is missing, the brain translates this into some sort of a shortcoming of reward and an uncontrolled desire of addiction is created. Once a psychological addiction turns into a physical dependency, its treatment can be more difficult and long
Addiction is often a taboo topic. Moreover, even when signs of an addiction appear, people tend to deny that it’s happening right in their own backyard. Creating awareness on how to recognize the first symptoms of an addict as well as how to deal with someone is crucial. If you know someone who you suspect to be an addict of some sort and you want by Selma Köhn to help, treat them like a normal person who has a When we hear the word addiction, we mainly serious illness rather than shaming them.
think of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes at first. But the fact is that addictions come in different forms, shapes and colours – and people. It’s not only the heroin addict that we find in the corners of a street or the alcoholic who spends his nights in a bar. Addictions befall doctors, lawyers, teachers, students, politicians and businessmen making it more of a social dispute than a criminal problem. Statistics say that around one in four people suffer from an addiction, be it drugs, alcohol, technology, shopping, food, sex or sugar. Addictions reached almost everyone’s homes and need to get lifted out of the dark and into the light of open discussions.
In a society that is built on creating an acceptable exterior, the troubled interior gets disregarded. 22 Identity November 2016

MALE TABOO by Alia El Saady
Society’s hardwired us into setting certain expectations for women: child bearing, running the home and generally not having any career goals. But if you think about it, there are a lot of expectations imposed on men too. How many times have you seen people asking boys to “man up” or media campaigns telling them “Estargel.” And much like women, if they don’t adhere to that stereotype, they’re frowned upon. But men don’t have to conform to these stereotypes, especially since some of them are very unreasonable. CRYING

and others hold it in and pretend that it doesn’t faze them. But not conveying your emotions or reacting in a particular way is a matter of preference, and is not and should never be an imposition.
FASHION AND BEAUTY
Fashion is another thing that men are expected not to care about. If a man happens to care about fashion and beauty products, it’s seen as blasphemous in the world of men. As if women are the only people on the face of this planet who are concerned with fashion! Wanting to dress fashionably and taking care of yourself by using cosmetic products should not be seen as something exclusively limited to women. The world of fashion and beauty is welcoming to all genders, and we should keep it that way!
NOT ASKING FOR HELP
Another consequence of the male stereotype is that How many times have you seen a young boy being men are told to do things on their own. And they’re scolded for crying? Crying is a common reaction urged not to ask for help. But the truth is, you can’t to certain situations, and it’s definitely nothing to do everything on your own. It’s just not possible. scold anyone about. Reacting by crying is more There’s nothing wrong with asking for help; you don’t of a personality trait rather than a female-centric have to carry the burden of something just because practice. breaking the taboos
HOW TO BE A REBEL Social taboos include discussing sexuality and mental health, whether being homosexual or having a psychological disorder. ‘Family Secrets’ (Asrar 3aileya) is the first Egyptian film to tackle the idea of homosexuality. The film explores the story of Marwan, a young man, and we see that he visits five psychiatrists to try to “cure” himself from a disease: his homosexuality. The film demonstrates how the society views any individual, who deem themselves homosexual, as a person with a mental problem. Although there are no explicit scenes, the moderation had asked the director to cut thirteen minutes from the film’s runtime. The director then argued that “His relationship will seem like a heterosexual relationship.” and “It’ll mess up the film. You won’t be able to understand the psychological dilemma of the character, or his relationship with others.”
TABOO MOVIES TO WATCH by Kenzie Ali
Films are an escape for a couple of hours. Although the genre may differ from one film to the other, it is not uncommon to seek solace and to want to detach from reality for a while through losing yourself in the screen. However, sometimes films are used to open our eyes to several societal issues that are not often talked about, to give us an idea of what they mean and where they stand. Social taboos are explored in both Arabic and English films, but they are less common in Arabic ones given the strong moderation and sensory of films that address culturally sensitive issues. 26 Identity November 2016
Marriage and marital expectations are also huge topics of debate within our community and culture. A couple of films explore the social taboos related to the married life. ‘Teenage Diaries’ (Mozakerat Morahka) tells the story of a couple’s relationship and its boundaries before marriage. The idea of kissing or having intercourse before marriage is forbidden on many levels. Moreover, the movie brings up and stresses the idea that a female must be a virgin until she gets married or she and her family will be shamed, disrespected and she might even be disowned by her father. Another film that deals with marriage and teenagers is ‘Girls’ Secrets’ (Asrar el Banat). When a sixteenyear-old girl gets pregnant out of wedlock, it sparks all kinds of tension. Some of the questions raised are about how to block out the unwanted influences of the Western world, given that premarital sex is not uncommon abroad. Another question is should sexual intercourse be taught in schools? Should teenage girls and boys socialize or should they be segregated in order to cut down the risk of premarital intercourse? These are all films which deal with very real issues, and will hopefully open people’s eyes to what is happening around us and spark ideas on how to deal with it.
by Alia El Saady
So, you want to be a rebel? You’ve realized that you are not quite like everybody else. Conforming to social norms is just not your thing, and why should it be? Social norms were meant to be challenged, and that’s where you come in! But like anything else, there’s a particular guideline to becoming rebellious! Identity’s got you covered with all the necessary tips you need to truly become a rebel.
1.
FIND A CAUSE
Find something that really grinds your gears. It could be that you don’t like the way a particular group is treated, or it could be a personal thing that society isn’t willing to accept in you. Anything that just seems to bother you about the existing social order is your cause.
aware of other people’s causes and are willing to fight with them too. You can’t be a close-minded rebel. It just doesn’t work.
5.
READ OFTEN
Reading is the best way to broaden your mind, and turn something that was simply a nuisance in your youth into an actual full-fledged cause. Reading about your cause, whether it be feminism, antiracism or animal rights is the best way to figure out how to contribute to it. It’s also a means for you to truly understand how far your cause has come and how you can further it.
2.
RANT ABOUT IT OFTEN ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Though it pains me to say it, the internet is the hub where people can rant about things. It’s a meeting place where all rebels can talk about things that they want to change. And it also happens to be a way for you to realize that there are people out there just like you with causes similar to yours.
3.
DRESS TO EXPRESS
Society has told us that we must dress and carry ourselves a certain way. But the way you dress should not be determined by anyone other than yourself! If you feel like wearing a wacky hat and a coat all the time, then by all means do that. If it ends up provoking someone, then pat yourself on the back. You are just one step closer to becoming a rebel.
4.
SUPPORT OTHER CAUSES
Being a rebel doesn’t mean you’re only aware of your own cause. In fact, there are a lot of things out there that should bother you. Make sure you’re November 2016 Identity 27

BARRAGAN
FASHION DEBUTANTES
Bold is the one perfect word to describe Victor Barragán’s runway. The NYC-based designer from Mexico turns his catwalk into a powerful stage filled with androgyny and theater that is too loud to ignore. Statement emblazons the adornments and details of Barragán’s collections that tell a tale of the late nineties and early noughties explorer.

Fashion is all about perennial evolution of creative contribution. There are those houses that have attained an established fame for flare and taste and stood the test of time: Chanel, Burberry. Even Guccio Gucci has to start somewhere though. The staying power of these creative debutantes is called into question. Will they survive today’s cut throat fashion industry? Only time will tell. In the meantime, feast your gazes on the rising stars of tomorrow.
ANISSA AIDA
Tunisian-bred and Paris-born, Anissa Meddeb at 23 has already proved herself a human mosaic. Straddeling between Europe and the Arab world, she brings together a fresh interpretation to the mixture of oriental and occidental lines. A product of NYC’s Parsons, with sprinkles of interning around fashion capitals in Europe, has given Meddeb a multi-dimensional experience in the industry. Not to mention her multi-tasking as any true millennial with her efforts going into her own collection as well as activewear brand Outdoor Voices.
Carli Pearson has an illustrious list of household fashion names to her recordWang, Stella McCartney, Pucci. In some sense, you feel Pearson has already circled the globe through her creative stints, gearing her for her launch of Cimone in 2016. The Central Saint Martin’s woman has had her debut FW16 collection touted as playful, which is no wonder with such a colorful resume!
GABRIEL VIELMA
Chilean-born mastermind, Gabriel Vielma, has taken London by gentle storm with a collection so feminine and airy, it is more akin to a summer breeze- save for the fact that it is a force of nature. Before dominating the London stage, Vielma studied in industrial design in Madrid. While FW16 lent a more overpowering look of structure and rigidity, SS17 seems to be spouting sonnets and cotton candy hued elegance that make you yearn for Spring.

CIMONE
In case you missed the memo on the sleepwear trend, now is a great time to catch up. Francesca Ruffini is the brains behind For Restless Sleepers. As FRS, incidentally a clever monogram for Ruffini, would suggest, it is entirely dedicated to lustful and wearable sleepwear that transitions into daytime. The old glamour feel of the 1950s permeates the designs, fabrics and textures of FRS, all culminating in the brand’s delicate piped finishing on most of its exquisite garments.
PH5
Knitwear heaven made it to fashion week and it is divine. Founder Wei Lin and designer Mijia Zhang have teamed up to resuscitate the downtrodden knit that has become synonymous with frump of late. Clean lines and surgical precision come together to create a spring line that makes for agile and wearable summer knits.
The best Korean export bar none (OK, maybe Gangnam Style?) has catapulted eyewear to the forefront of statement accessorizing. Taking wearable art to a new level, Gentle Monster has been on the scene for some time now, collaborating with Opening Ceremony and Hood by Air. The shades range from over-the-top ski masque sunglasses to razor-thin wires, crediting the brand’s versatile statement style. November 2016 Identity 37

Trailblazers:
ALL HAIL THE KING’S MOTHER interview by Nahed Kazziha
The King’s Mother conjures images of nobility and royalty that exude tradition. Well, if that’s what came to your mind, you are half right and all at once, entirely wrong! Co-founders, Farida Naguib and Nadine Sabry, have managed to deliver the exact dose of classic and edgy through their FW16 collection. Nothing short of harmonious, the cacophony of tradition and modernity have resulted in a delightfully melodic debut collection entitled “Outlined”. Drawing inspiration from none other than nature itself, The King’s Mother explored animal anatomy to carefully combine lace, organza and neoprene into meticulously tailored blazers, equal parts statement and heritage.

A CENSORED VIEW INTO THE WORLD OF RELIGIONS: The Arab World and its Religious Taboos by Tara Shehata
A man in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to 10 years in jail and 2000 lashes for tweeting about his atheism. He didn’t deny the tweets and stands firm with his beliefs, or rather lack of. In a situation as horrible as this, all that can be done is hope that the man sees mercy from religious people who claim to believe in merciful religions. Religious taboos are definitely on the rise. Thankfully, however, Egypt isn’t as rigid when it comes to punishing people who believe in other religions. Nevertheless, Egypt has seen other forms of religious taboos that aren’t as explicit as those we witness in Saudi Arabia. The reality is, Egypt has only two truths: A Muslim one, and a Christian one. The majority of the population are Muslims and the minority are Christians. This is the extent to which the truth lies in Egypt. Apart from these two religions, the various other religions that exist in the world are nowhere to be found in the Egyptian premises, or at least nowhere to be found in the open.
to Atheist, is an ‘other’ that is to be looked at in a condescending way. What is also notable among the Egyptian youth is that when a person starts questioning their faith out loud, their friends can react in an almost aggressive manner in order to defend their religions. And, of course, if someone ever happens to debate the existence of God, they’re instantly rejected by the rest and placed in the ‘other’ category. HOW CAN TABOOS AND CENSORSHIP HELP A SOCIETY?
Religious censorship, that is, the conspicuous decision to avoid talking about other faiths other than your own, is thought by many firm believers to be the key to securing faith. People believe that by creating taboos, exercising censorship and restricting information about what the world is really composed of, they’d be securing more people in the only religions they’ve been taught and grown into. As much as this is true, because when someone grows into one stern truth, One of the reasons for this is probably the rich diverse the human brain wouldn’t really want to comprehend Christian and Islamic history of the country, but also something that falls outside of that truth, it might because of the taboos and general unwillingness to also result in an opposite reaction. The censorship discuss other religions openly. If you have the capacity to love and give, you can do it in many different ways. The world is hungry for love.” Magda 67 years old, widowed after 36 years of marriage. You may not agree with every reason. And perhaps some of the women here might eventually change their minds– nothing is wrong with that so long as their decision represents them. The idea is to be entitled to your own voice and have the choice.
WHEN A WOMAN SAYS ‘NO’ TO CHILDBEARING by Amina El Ghandour
Society defines what is right and wrong, and the majority of us tend to conform. In most cases, it is safer to find approval for our life choices than challenge long established norms. The problem arises when the inner voices of some speak against what is socially expected of them. What if you realize that what you want for yourself falls under what is considered socially ‘wrong’ – or even worse -a ‘taboo’? Too wrong, that it potentially violates religion and tradition -too wrong that even a discussion is sanctioned. However, there are a few who realize that it is our responsibility as evolving species to live up to our own recognized values, and as a result, challenge conventions and break taboos. I’m particularly inspired by married women who make the conscious decision not to have children -at all. In Middle Eastern societies, children are considered a God-sent gift. Motherhood is sacred and a woman’s ultimate role in life. This leaves women who choose to say ‘no’ to childbearing with a significant struggle, a struggle I wish to partially unravel here. Their voices need to be heard and their stories need to be told because they speak their truths. 54 Identity November 2016
WHAT ARE SOME REASONS FOR THIS DECISION? “I love children, but I never had maternal instincts –not for a moment. The only benefit I saw in childbearing is ‘old age insurance’ –that would have been selfish on my part.” Maha 47, recently divorced. “I know I don’t want children because I never envision a future in which I’m a mother. My future plans have many things, and children are simply not one of them.” Nadia 29, engaged. “I never had interest in children whatsoever and don’t think I ever will.” Alia 37, married for eight years. “Looking at mothers and children exhausts me. If I ever do, I’d feel forced.” Farah 33, engaged. “I was never particularly maternal, but this world is not a good place either. I don’t think it’s fair to bear children for my personal joy and security and make the decision for them to face a harsh world.” Dina 45 years, married for 17 years now. “Raising children is a huge commitment and a significant compromise to my being- was never sure
HOW DO FAMILIES RESPOND? The decision not to have children inevitably involves two people. The women here had partners who supported them, either because they shared their sentiments about children or had children themselves from previous marriages - thus had no reason to pressure them into something they would not want. However, even with a partner on board, challenges to such a decision do not cease. When it comes to families, especially in the Middle East, they don’t want their stalks to be cut short. Some of the women interviewed had supportive parents- something that probably enabled them to stick to their decision. Other parents found it hard to accept. Initially, some families dismissed the decision as ‘momentary’ or ‘immature’. A woman in her late twenties, who announces she will not have children, could not have been taken seriously after all. However, as time passed and they persisted in their choice, some parents were disappointed and angry. Talking reason into their daughters entailed much ‘fear-invoking’. Fear about possible regrets down the line, the prospects of the marriage crumbling because it is childless, a lonely future- and not to mention God’s wrath.
a past decision is a choice in itself. You may choose to lash yourself over something or know you did what was right for you at the time. As for loneliness, no one can predict what the future holds. You may be a mother but grow and find yourself alone, nevertheless. In a good case scenario, your children would be well but living in a different country. There are, however, more ugly possibilities for the future. Therefore, ‘old age insurance’ like Maha said, can never be an adequate reason to bear children. Finally, if children are a precious God-sent gift, then you might as well not have them unless you are sure you have the capacity to fully love and nurture them. WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL SOCIAL PRICE FOR SUCH A CHOICE? Most of the women who refuse childbearing feel comfortable enough to speak out when asked. Ironically, they are never believed. Extended family members and society in general, presume that if a married woman does not have children, she inevitably has a medical reason that is stopping her. A choice is never taken into account. There is a solid belief that every woman wants to be a motherunequivocally. As a result, those who are not, are showered with pity. It doesn’t end with pity. In many cases, women who decide not to have children are silently banned from many social activities that revolve around the little ones. Their friends become consumed by parenthood leaving the childless ones with restricted circles to mingle within. However, the responsibility here falls on society at large to accommodate differences and respect the choices of others.

The picture was obviously controversial and stirred many debates to whether it really is “Eib” or if it should be encouraged. A few people urged the Facebook user to delete it and commented on the picture saying: “What could you possibly like in such a picture?”. Others even brought up Islam and claimed the picture to be against Islamic principles. While others thought it was beautiful and revolutionary: “We need to see more of this in the streets of Cairo! Revolution, is also about love and expressing it. A kiss, even in public, is something wonderful!” Not only is PDA prohibited on the streets, it has also almost been entirely disqualified from Egyptian films. While it’s considered okay for films to talk about rape, and joke about sex, kissing rarely ever occurs on screen. This wasn’t the case a few decades ago, when people like Faten Hamama and Abdel Halim Hafez were still occupying our screens. The actors tended to kiss on screen, very normally. Nowadays, such displays of affection would only be answered with criticism. Puzzlingly however, Egyptians would still choose to watch American films in cinemas with several displays of affection without opposing them, when they’d be enraged if it happened in their films, with Egyptian actors.
sex, which is definitely not taken lightly and openly in Egypt. Even though, religion does not forbid hugging and kissing, it would still be accurate to say that religion influences the level of expression of affection. Although, Egypt’s constitution isn’t the sharia law, it is still a very religious country, which would explain why PDA isn’t the norm. This would explain why Public Display of Affection isn’t a mere cultural and religious taboo, it is also politically unlawful, and claims of Public Indecency could be held against you if you are caught kissing your partner in public, with the exception of a few places such as the airport.
PARENTAL PDA
What should really stir a lot of debate regarding PDA in Egypt is that although we tend to associate it with couples, PDA has also been made a taboo between parents and their children. It is conspicuously less of a stern restriction, but you can always sense people eyeing you in the streets if you decide to hug your kid, who is of the opposite sex.
I recall getting a hug from my dad when I was 12, in a mall, and a woman who passed by us, felt the need to tell us that it is “Eib” and that we shouldn’t do that, even if I were his daughter. Of course, this PDA IN EGYPT had troubled me as a kid and I experienced a mixture In the 80s, for economic reasons, many Egyptians of emotions. Public Display of Affection by Tara Shehata
In May 2013, Ahmed ElGohary decided to share on Facebook a picture of a young couple kissing openly in public. In the caption he had written in Arabic: “Some people curse, fight and kill each other on the street, some sleep on the floor in the street, some sell their honour on the street, but it would truly be a scandal if someday we forgot and kissed each other on the street”.
56 Identity November 2016
Public Display of Affection in Egypt is now a delicate topic, even to foreigners who are commonly clearly advised against it before landing in the country. PDA does not really exist in Egypt, except for minor exceptions such as holding hands. As you stroll down the streets of Cairo, you may see few men and women holding hands, and funnily enough, more men and men having their arms hooked around each other, something that would be, ironically, more of a taboo in the West.
ElGohary had a point though, there are so many forms of oppression on the streets, people fight each other and people sell their honour, why is it then that anything that generates positive emotion and love, stay banned from the streets?
Do we actually believe that there is any wrong in parents hugging their children? Furthermore, how should those who happen to be more open-minded about the subject react? Should they ignore all the judgements they may be subjected to on the streets Why is it a taboo in the first place? ECCENTRICITY by Kenzie Ali & Alia ElSaady
THE TATTOO TABOO During the past few years, there has been an up and coming phenomenon of getting tattoos worldwide. As time went by, it began getting more globally accepted. It has spread to Egypt in full force, however, it is not as accepted here as it is abroad. People who decide to get inked up usually end up hiding their tattoos with long sleeves or even not admitting to having any, in fear of getting rejected by society due to the social stigma associated with having tattoos. There’s a certain stereotype tied with the idea of getting tattoos that is usually given to people with them: Gang members. While, in fact, this stereotype is not true. On the contrary, tattoos could be seen as a way of self-expression, expressing one’s identity for the world to see maybe through an inspirational quote that would get you through the day or bring a smile to your face. Creativity is also a very big aspect of tattoos, whether one designs their own tattoos or uses an already existing idea, it shows your originality. People with tattoos definitely stand out in a crowd. People marvelling at their ink and in more ways than one, it is considered art. Moreover, it shows one’s passion for a certain subject, say getting a reference to their favourite character or film. The connection is more than just a superficial one; it goes so deep and means so much and people like to show that. “You won’t get a job!”, “Tattoos aren’t attractive.”, “It will look ugly when you grow up.” I’ve heard those statements and many more whenever I would discuss the idea of getting a tattoo with some people. However, job places have become more tolerant of tattoos simply because it’s seen as self-expression and freedom of speech. What is attractive and what is not is very relative, and in the world we live in today, people are more open-minded and odds are, you will find someone who shares your opinion. Even if some people do not find tattoos attractive, you get them for yourself regardless what anyone thinks. Be your own self, stand up for who you are and strive to be different. 58 Identity November 2016
SHORT HAIR? DON’T CARE!
“What if you change your mind?” Being so passionate about a certain thing is not a trend. It doesn’t come and go because it builds you as a person; it is imbedded in your being and will always be a part of you. Getting a tattoo is a physical connection to what is inside, what matters to you most. However, you can still remove it. Fun fact: Bedouins have facial tattoos in forms of circles, dots or lines on their chin or near their forehead. In that culture, it is seen as a kind of amulet that protects the body and is considered a mark of beauty. Moreover, facial tattoos have been used to identify the tribe they belong to. It always goes back to the idea of identity, so why can’t other tattoos be seen the same way?
Throughout history, a long head of hair has been seen as a woman’s “crowning glory”. Long flowing hair is a traditional beauty ideal, just like the hourglass shape. But there’s nothing wrong with having short hair. In a lot of ways, having short hair is a lot better than having long hair. But there’s a societal mentality that expects men and women to conform to these cookie-cutter shapes. And if they stray from the norm, it’s frowned upon. But there’s nothing wrong with it.
does not necessarily mean that you’re feminine. In Hindu culture, a widowed woman cuts her hair signifying that her femininity and all that she is, is linked to the life of her husband. Her hair is not her own. Similarly in our own culture, we have the notion that you should wear what people prefer not what you necessarily prefer. A woman’s hair is not her own in that sense.
Society and media teach us that girls are prized for their long hair. That beauty is derived from having long hair. Long hair is tied to your attractiveness to the other gender, femininity and to beauty. As soon as a woman chops these long locks, it seems to others that she’s ridding herself of these things. But a woman’s worth should not depend on the length of her hair. And hair length, and appearance should Women have the freedom to choose their hairstyles. not be the determining factor for these three things. But to say the Sherif Barakat was only hopeful when it came to the dollar crisis, is to do him great injustice, since Barakat was also hopeful about production and manufacturing in Egypt with confidence in the local market, where he mentioned that nothing is impossible when it comes to manufacturing and that there is a chance that Samsung Egypt would expand its operations in the future Barakat, also, assured us that the door is always open for any kind of investment, and that the Egyptian consumer is open to technology.
A LOOK INTO SAMSUNG EGYPT, THE INSIDE OF SAMSUNG’S COMPANY IN BENISWAIF, AND THE MOST RECENT WEARABLE DEVICES Based on an Interview with Sherif Barakat the Vice President and CCO of Samsung Egypt
Samsung devices from getting sold in Europe for example and not in Egypt”. Having said that, Barakat also shed a light on the advanced electronic devices like for example the Samsung Family hub refrigerator which is based on IOT and how such advancement in technology where electronics are controlled by the internet may be hard to sell in Egypt due to the lack of a fast speed internet network, but he was hopeful that the introduction of the fourth generation will allow more Samsung electronic devices that are more advanced to enter the Egyptian market.
After Samsung’s huge presence in IFA this year, we took it upon ourselves to meet up with Sherif Barakat, The Vice President and CCO of Samsung Egypt, to discuss with him and get to know more about Samsung’s presence in Egypt, the latest technology when it comes to Samsung’s electronic devices, the availability of some of the devices we found in IFA, and how Samsung is handling the dollar crisis in Egypt.
Egyptian market, which got us wondering if there was a certain strategy that Samsung follows in order to sell their products in Egypt or if there are any governmental barriers that prevents Samsung Egypt from selling all devices. Barakat assured us that the Gear S3 will be available in the market soon even though it will work normally through Bluetooth. Barakat also said that the decision process by which Samsung decides which products enter the Egyptian markets is not restricted by any governmental For those of you who don’t know, IFA is basically barriers, but that it is purely related to the consumers an annual consumer electronics show which is held demands where Sherif Barakat mentioned that 90% in Berlin, Germany and which serves as a launching of all Samsung products are found in the Egyptian platform for smart phones and electronic devices market, and that the products that don’t get sold are manufacturers. We witnessed in IFA an astounding usually highly priced when compared to the demands presence of Samsung and which Barakat himself of the consumers, and can usually be replaced with described as a very strong presence; however, it other Samsung devices that are of equal efficiency appeared to us that some of the devices that were and a lower price. Barakat also went an extra mile showcased by Samsung in IFA were not found in the by telling us that “No strategy prevents certain 64 Identity November 2016
When asked about the dollar crisis that has been affecting most of the huge corporations in Egypt, Sherif Barakat gave us nothing but a hopeful response and what might be also a solution to the dollar crisis. He assured us that the presence of Samsung Egypt is very strong and that Samsung is keen on delivering the highest technology for the Egyptian consumer. Barakat also mentioned how that is evident in the diversity of products whether it is in wearables like the Gear S3 or refrigerators and TVs. He also spoke with high regard about Samsung’s company in the small city beniswaif which he regarded as one of the key factors for why Samsung is not facing the hardships of the dollar crisis. According to him, the company which was built in 2013 allows Samsung Egypt to export to an approximate of 36 countries in the Middle East which in return provides Samsung Egypt with the currency necessary to buy and import products. Barakat also mentioned that the company in Beniswaif is the biggest exporter of electronic devices in Egypt, and that he regards it as a success story to why people should invest in small cities and not only that, but that investors should also make sure that the working force that is employed in the company is from the city, because the workers have proved to work more efficiently since they develop a stronger connection with the land.
“The Egyptian consumer loves technology” he said when asked about the consumer demand to products other than smart phones and tablets. He also mentioned that while the wearables, like for example Samsung Gear S3, are not as important around the world as smart phones, Samsung predicts that in the near future, the wearables are to become of the same importance as smart phones and mobile phones. He also mentioned that Samsung is increasing from the wearables usefulness like for example the gear S3 which can detect heart beats, track calories and notify a person if the phone was away, and how these advances are bound to make the consumer purchase these wearables since they will be very useful to the consumer. According to Barakat the key to the selling of wearables or any electronic devices is dependent on the business case that is put in place to help raise awareness towards a certain product and encourage the consumer to buy it, but once the business case is put in place and product is out, the product gets sold fast, he also gave us a strong example which we can all relate to, the mobile phone, and how the consumers at first were reluctant to buy it in Egypt unaware of its usefulness, but once it was out and show cased in a certain way, its purchase power increased, and it’s production is increasing by the day as we are all witnessing today. Finally, we couldn’t get enough of Sherif Barakat’s hopeful perception of the world and his passion for electronic devices so we couldn’t help but ask him for his input and what he regards as his favourite wearable, and to be honest, Barakat didn’t hesitate once in his answer, when he mentioned that his favourite Samsung product is for sure the Gear Icon X, because it makes his working out life easier since it attaches to the ear and allows him to run freely and work out without the constant inconvenience of the normal headphones falling off.
