NEW YEAR TRADITIONS WE BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW by Nadine Omar

VARIETY MEAL UP TO 4-3 PERSONS

New Year’s is globally known to be celebrated on the night of the 31st of December, which is New Year’s Eve, with January 1st set to be the first day of the New Year. Up until this day, that is not the case in all countries and cultures. The Chinese New Year, for instance, is not only celebrated between late January to early February, but lasts a whole month too! According to history, the earliest celebrations of a New Year date back to 4,000 years when the Babylonians celebrated the first new moon following the vernal equinox –around spring time, where daylight is as long as nighttime- through an 11 day long religious festivity called Akitu. Throughout time, the calendar was restructured, leading to today’s Gregorian calendar. The celebration of New Year, however, has always been a symbol of new beginnings, leaving behind a year with all the good and the not so good. We’re all familiar with the massive fireworks shows held at symbolic landmarks, the parades, the toasts and the resolutions, but some cultures have some very untraditional approaches towards starting their new year including food, coloured underwear, and yes, strapping young good looking men!

SMART RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR by Kate Kerpez

For many people, the New Year symbolizes not only another calendar year, but an opportunity to commit to new goals. Every year, many of us come up with our own New Year’s resolutions to guide us in the upcoming year. A 2015 survey showed that some of the most common resolutions include losing weight, getting organized, saving money, enjoying life and staying healthy (Statistic Brain, 2015). Although we usually hope to maintain our resolutions throughout the year, it is typical for resolutions to be forgotten or buried under other responsibilities. In fact, while 75% of resolutionmakers tend to stick to their resolutions during the first week of the New Year, only 46% manage to maintain their resolutions after six months (Statistic Brain, 2015). Fortunately, psychologists have thought up some useful rules for coming up with New Year’s resolutions that we can keep. S.M.A.R.T. goals refer to goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. The S.M.A.R.T. goal criteria are sometimes used in business settings to help business leaders create goals for future operations, but they can be applied equally as well to the creation of New Year’s resolutions. Specific goals consider the ‘who, what, when, where, why, and how’ of each goal. Knowing exactly who will be involved, what resources you need, where you will complete your goal, why you chose the goal and how you will follow through helps in the creation of goals you can keep. Measurable goals are those that you can count your progress towards. For instance, if your goal is to lose weight, you might count how many pounds are lost each week. Achievable goals can reasonably be accomplished, and Relevant goals are those that are worth putting effort towards. Finally, goals should be Time-bound, meaning that a target deadline is applied for completing the 24 Identity December 2016

goal or completing a step towards the goal (The Conversation, 2016; MindTools, 2016). In addition to setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, successful resolutions can be set by involving friends and family in our commitment to our resolutions. Asking for support is a great way to find resources to bring you closer to your goal (APA, 2016). For example, you may have a friend or a family member who excels at financial planning and can offer good advice if you are resolving to save money. Friends and family are witnesses to much of our behaviour and can remind us to stay committed to our resolutions when we start to slip (The Conversation, 2016). It might be difficult to share personal resolutions with others, but doing so can greatly increase the chance of achieving a resolution (Kruse, 2016). Of course, slip-ups do occur. It’s okay to make mistakes, because we can always choose to recommit to our resolutions and keep trying (Kruse, 2016). With these tips in mind, we can enjoy New Year’s Eve with the promise of a successful year to come. References: APA. (2016). Making your New Year’s resolution stick. HAIR STYLES FOR WINTER 2016 by Tara Shehata

WIN A TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA BROUGHT TO YOU BY

1. AU NATUREL This one gives you that natural sexy look every woman craves. Plus, it takes the least effort to pull. You just need to shower, and leave your curls go wild and free. By adding a dark shade of lipstick on as well, you’ll definitely pull that simple yet sexy look.

2. DIP DYE The dip dye might be last summer’s news, but the red just gives an amazing sense of rebellion, the blond never did. So, if you’re trying to express your rebelliousness, do consider this dip dye. It looks gorgeous. Then use “Oscar Blandi Olio di Jasmine Hair Serum.”

3. BRAIDED PONYTAIL This look suits the Fall to Winter transition perfectly well. All you have to do is divide your hair in two and braid half of it. You’ll then take the braided part and join it to the other part, whilst forming a ponytail! We recommend using “Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray.”

4. THE SIMPLE If you don’t feel like putting a lot of effort into your look today, you can easily pull this hairdo. You can just braid two locks of hair from one side. That’s all there is to it! And it still looks gorgeous.

5. JASMINE This one’s for all Disney and Aladdin lovers. If you’ve got long hair, and are tired of the same old straight look, try this hairstyle for a change. It’s a mixture between a ponytail and a braid. It also works well with long earrings.

6. THE TAYLOR SCHILLING This haircut belongs to everyone looking to change themselves and to start a new chapter. It looks bold and sexy at the same time. We’re all afraid to cut off our locks, but once you do, nothing feels as liberating.

16 Moments of FASHION in 2016 by Nahed Kazziha

As we bid 2016 adieu, it is only fitting to look back at the year and honour its most memorable moments: ups and downs, drama, innovation and comebacks. We take a look back at the 16 most defining events of 2016- a year of fashion.

1. RETURN OF THE 90S A decade many of us are trying to forget, but came back to haunt us nonetheless. Complete with massive logos (think CK printed Tshirts!) and chokers in abundance, the 90s have officially become a throwback era and cemented in the history of fashion.

5. UNISEX FASHION SHOWS

Hitting the runways with their FW16 collection, this year has been huge for Oscar de la Renta alums Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia. The lifestyle brand takes its glamorous cues from de la Renta, while completely modernizing and deconstructing the basic staple every woman has in her closet: the shirt.

For those sceptics that find fashion to be out of touch with reality and out of place in today’s world, the industry showed everyone that necessity is the mother of invention. In a creative and bold move, large fashion houses such as Burberry and Gucci paraded collections for women and men down the same catwalk. A sign of trying times which culminated in glorious creativity and a message of gender equality.

2. GUCCI’S COMEBACK

As if resurrected from the grave, Alessandro Michele’s creative direction has finally paid off and breathed new life into Italian powerhouse, Gucci. Full-on kitsch, embroidery and a mashup of polo chic and nerd aficionado have all dominated this year’s Gucci presentations, proving once again that there is always a place for the Greats of fashion.

3. BILL CUNNINGHAM The original chronicler of New York street-style bid our world farewell at age 87. The American fashion photographer was far from a paparazzo and instead strived to capture forms of style and self-expression as a mirror to the times. 34 Identity December 2016

4. MONSE

6. IVY PARK Queen Bey may be a showstopper and charttopper, but add to that her sense of style and her royalty is unparalleled in today’s celebrity world. Beyonce’s athletic line, Ivy Park, was stocked everywhere from Top Shop to Net-a-Porter, with the label daringly emblazoned across the collection- a whisper of a promise that if you work out in this gear, you will indeed look like Beyonce!

7. HEDI SLIMANE’S There are few creative directors that become synonymous with the label, but Slimane was certainly among the rare breed. His departure from Saint Laurent left the label with lackluster and in need for new inspiration. Hedi Slimane had embodied all the grit and glam that YSL had to offer, creating a void at fashion’s go-to house for glam rock.

fashion fever

12. CHLOE’S IT BAGS There is always one “it” bag a season. Normally, the baton is passed from one designer to the next, but in this case, Chloe ran a full marathon in 2016. Between the Drew and the Faye, Chloe’s dominance over the bags scene this year has been stellar. The delicate chains, retro-inspired leather and patchwork, down to the mini versions were all “it”.

8. ANDRE COURREGES The inventor of the miniskirt and go-go boots, fashion has Courreges to thank for the swinging 60s style. Andre Courreges catapulted the modern woman and her wardrobe to the forefront of haute couture with collections that creatively applied futuristic fabrics, redefining femininity for generations to come. At 92, the designer passed in his home country of France.

9. JADEN SMITH FOR LOUIS VUITTON

13. SONIA RYKIEL

Breaking down all gender definitions and barriers is none other than Will Smith’s son, Jaden. You may remember him starring alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happyness or later as The Karate Kid, but his ability to shock and awe the fashion stage is extraordinary. Posing alongside female models in womenwear, Jaden Smith gave Louis Vuitton’s campaign the edge it craved.

The fashion world lost an icon of Parisian style with the passing of Sonia Rykiel at age 86. The Queen of Knits was known for her inventive couture techniques, experimenting with hems and sweaters. Her unmistakable appearance and fiery red hair were often introduced into her own designs along with loud slogans across Rykiel’s famously striped knitwear.

COPTIC FESTIVITIES ON THE BANKS OF THE NILE by Amina El Ghandour

population. One specific Coptic festival took place on the banks of the Nile -Eid El Shahid. This feast fell on the 8th of Pashons – that is around the 16th or 17th of May – and the end of the ancient Egyptian harvest season -Shemu. Over the next season, the Nile is expected to rise; its rise to 16-19 cubits indicated an abundant agricultural cycle and a prosperous year for everyone. However, to ensure that this surge took place, Egyptians gathered to witness the blessings of the Coptic priests at the end of the harvest season. They gathered from all over the country to witness the priests of Shubra as they deposited a martyr’s relic, usually placed in a wooden casket into the waters of the Nile. It was a festive event for Egyptians who came from far and wide and dispersed over house roofs, in tents and in boats celebrating with music and food. The presence of Islam did not change this important Egyptian festival – in fact it continued as a significant Coptic/ Egyptian feast up to the 14th century. COPTIC NEW YEAR The first day of the Coptic calendar, 1 Thout, falls on the 11th of September. This also marks the end of the ancient Egyptian Akhet season (June to September) when the Nile rises to its highest level, just before it floods and fertilizes the land. This initiated the agricultural cycle. For Egypt, a predominantly agricultural land, the first day of the Coptic year was an official Egyptian feast as well as a Coptic celebration – one of the most important events in Islamic Cairo too. Under Muslim rule, the feast took the name of Nayruz (confused with the Persian feast, Nawruz), and retains that name to the day.

The Nile is the vein of Egypt, from which all forms liturgical calendar corresponds to that of the Nile of life sprang. The shift in faith and adoption of a new belief system has not undermined the importance of the Nile for the lives of Egyptians. Its presence remained essential for the sustenance of life itself. Hence, as we delve in the history of the Coptic Church, we find that its

EID EL GHETASS (THE BAPTISM) Baptism for the Coptic Church had to take place in a sacred Egyptian site – the Nile. On the 11th of Tobi (18 or 19th of January) of each year, Egyptians gathered to observe the sacred ritual and celebrate the Coptic Eid El Ghetass, which commemorates the baptism of Christ. New submersion or baptism into the waters of the Nile used to take place then. It was a festive event for all Egyptians and remained a significant feast under the Fatimids. The Caliph was always present and everyone participated in the festivities that were

at times described by historians as ‘excessive’, which hints to the importance and magnitude of the event. Jugglers, musicians and public performers provided entertainment for the festive population. This feast coincides with a seasonal transition falling shortly after the winter solstice and marking the imminent closure of the ancient Egyptian Peret season (October to February). The Coptic Church was not the first to integrate religious values with cultural ones. In fact, this is a natural phenomenon that history attests to over and over. Judaism transformed completely under Babylonian captivity. In an attempt to survive a state of misplacement and dispossession in Babylon – a foreign land to them -they devised the religious attire and dietary habits that define them today. In Islam, while the Quran remains a core reference, discrepancies between Islamic habits in the Middle East and the Near East are quite evident. The Coptic faith was born in the heart of Egypt, hence it was natural for its calendar to follow the cycle of the Nile, while Islam initially dawned on a nomadic society that relied heavily on the moon and accordingly it follows a lunar calendar. Religions dawned on us with beautiful messages and for a better humanity. But the messages landed on people rooted to their lands and dependent on the nature it offered them. After all, whether it’s the Nile, the moon, the harvest - these all are divine gifts that sustain our lives in the universe. Recognizing their values and rendering them as part of our religious celebrations is an act of humbleness to the divine. The Coptic culture represents one of the oldest forms of an organized monotheist worship in Egypt. Its birth on this land brought to being sublime Christian values immersed with a strong Egyptian spirit.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS

by Tara Shehata

We’ve all been through at least one goodbye in our life. It’s always miserable and feels like a dead-end, especially if it was a great friendship and one of you is about to leave the country for good. It’s never easy to deal with goodbyes, because you know you’ll miss that person so much. And when you truly miss someone, you can feel a little empty for days on end, like a part of you has gone missing. However, there’s also so much joy that can come out of saying goodbye. Is there really a way to deal with saying goodbye, to live with it and still be happy? 50 Identity December 2016

One thing that’ll help alleviate the pain is finding and making new friends. As mentioned before, new things will come knocking on your door. I’m certain if goodbyes were that hard, no one can actually ever substitute your friend. However, making new friends does ease the ache. You get to know new people, new personalities, and even if you don’t want to hear it, these people will make you forget a little bit about your sorrow. Do make new friends. Don’t be afraid to embark on a new friendship. It’s not like anyone would be literally taking your friend’s place.

Lastly, you need to know that you can’t base your happiness on a certain person. You need to find that on your own; it can only come from within. Even if the absence of the person you had to say goodbye to is killing you, try to be content with what you still have around. Maybe, it’s your other friends or just the fact that you’re happy with the job you have. Focus on the things that make you happy, and on the fact that you’re embarking on a new journey and that life is all about seeing and experiencing new things. Growth can only come when you say goodbye to something.

KEEP YOURSELF BUSY

In case you’re the one who’s left the country and had to say goodbye, try to keep yourself busy as soon as you reach your destination. Even if you’re the one staying behind, manage to find things that’ll fill your days, so that you’re never alone and empty-handed. December 2016 Identity 51

endings & beginnings Dear Marwa, I’m single, and the holidays are a time of the year where the blues of being single particularly hit full force. I’ve been single for over a year and I’m getting used to it. But New Year’s is a tough time for me because it’s a holiday that you build a lot of expectations around. It’s the beginning of new things, and starting it out on a bad note can set the course for your whole year! To make matters worse, I met my ex-boyfriend on that particular holiday, so I have a lot of memories attached to it. My friends tell me that maybe I should go out on a date on New Year’s. But to me, that’s almost like going on a date on Valentine’s! The pressure’s too high for me to take that kind of plunge, and I’m not sure that it’s the best option. I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place and I don’t know what the best option for me is. I just want to have a memorable end to this year and set the course for a truly awesome new one. What do you recommend for the desperately single? Sincerely, Stuck on New Year’s Dear Stuck on New Year’s,

Your letter took me fifteen years down memory lane, to a time when we, girls, used to do anything to avoid showing up single to a NYE’s party. Some of us would start hunting a month before the big day, while others would open up the “friend zone closet” and pick out a man to use only on that special occasion. There were girls who would go online on a dating site and choose the most eligible candidate to party with, and there were those who would make temporary peace with their last ex or one of the exes, just for this one night. I have also known girls who would plan a trip outside the country for a couple of days at the end of December just to avoid the ‘see and be seen’ Egyptian society. There were those who would take a leap of faith, dress up all gorgeous and hop from one party to another hoping they would meet ‘The One’ on that special night.

for being single on NYE. I am now coming from the future and telling you that none of this matters and that none of it is true! I am telling you that faking a relationship is not a relationship, faking love is not true love, faking happiness does not make you happy, faking companionship does not make your sense of loneliness vanish and faking hope certainly does not bring miracles into your life. I can also tell you that being single for a while does not make you single forever, and that being single on NYE will not put the single curse on you for the rest of the year. My first advice to you is to be thankful that you are not with a man who would flirt with your friends on NYE, a man who would cheat on you on NYE, a man who would make you feel like a burden on NYE, a man who would tell you that he does not love you on NYE, a man who would tell you that he does not see a future with you on NYE, a man who would tell you that he is leaving you on NYE, a man who would switch his phone off and vanish on NYE, a man who would plan a trip with his friends and leave you out on NYE, a man who would make you feel lonely, alone and incomplete on NYE. Be thankful that you are not stuck in a loveless marriage and you have to celebrate NYE for the rest of your life with a man you loathe. Just be thankful! My second advice is to party! Throw your own party and call it the Single on NYE Bash! No couples allowed! Only single men and women are allowed! Choose a great DJ, play great “Thank God I am Single” songs, include raffle prizes, tombola and gifts for every one! Dress up, look stunning, feel confident and own the sincerest celebration in town that night! If you cannot throw a big scale party, make it a cozy celebration and have fun. This advice is all about attitude! There is no rule that forbids singles from enjoying their lives on any given day of the year. Choose to be happy and work on it!

My third advice to you is to count your blessings! Count your current blessings and celebrate them – even the tiniest of them all. Write down your resolutions and remind yourself to be true to yourself, to be independent, to be content, to have hope, to learn from your mistakes and to have no regrets. The only common thing between all those girls was Promise yourself love, respect and development. anxiety- that lurking fear of being single, staying Here is a salute from me to you and to all the single single, showing up single and being jinxed forever people out there! RECONNECTING WITH THE FAMILY by Tara Shehata

Families are truly a blessing in disguise. First of all, no matter what you become, they’ll still stick by your side. Secondly, you know you’ll always have someone you can come back to no matter where life takes you. Unfortunately, life happens to lead us in different directions. Childhood tends to be this happy realm of meet-ups with cousins. It usually revolves around family gatherings and constant dinners. Adulthood, however, is completely different. Whether we like it or not, life suddenly occurs. We each discover our separate courses, and sadly find ourselves forced to be apart. Some of us travel; others get lifeconsuming jobs they can’t get out of. Either way, the chances of uniting with your family decreases with time. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true.

particular to your family and that’s been in the family line for generations, such as your grandma’s favourite dish or the famous family secret recipe: That secretive dish no one besides your family ever makes or has even heard about. All of these things that are specifically meaningful to you will help make things a lot warmer.

YOU CAN ALSO PLAY A BOARD GAME! That’s another way you to reconnect. Who doesn’t like games? Especially with the few competitors in the house, things are going to get exciting and heated up. From Pictionary, to Monopoly, you’ll find a vast arena of choices when it comes to board games. You can also play cards, or maybe trivia games. It’ll get you guys all cosied up together. Games tend to make outings fun and a lot less awkward than expected. Of course, the unhappy outcome is that sometimes I know you wouldn’t like to think that there even amidst all the noise of life, we lose touch with our might be a slight chance of awkwardness between loved ones. GET OUT YOUR OLD ALBUMS AND PICTURES One of the ultimate greatest ways to reconnect with your family is old albums! Nothing says “I miss you” like getting an old album with baby pictures of all of you together from the attic. Everyone will be interested: The cousins, their parents, the grandparents. Everyone will want to have a look at the pictures and reminisce about the good old times. Aside from all of the pictures, you can also reminisce about your shared memories. Remind them of the time you tripped and broke your tooth at your cousin’s place, or the time you and your cousin decided to lie to your parents and sneak out on a

school night. Keeping memories alive takes two. You can always have them with you alone, but in order to truly relive and have all of the past feelings come rushing in again, you need to share it with the person you’ve experienced that memory with. At the end of the day, family’s family. No matter where you go in life, and no matter where the course takes you, you’ll still have them. You may lose touch and things might not be the exact same as before, but that’s nothing but normal. No matter what happens, you know you can still talk to them if you need them, and they can talk to you when they need you.

But the truth is, you have to surround yourself with people to keep you on task.

STICKING TO YOUR RESOLUTIONS by Alia ElSaady

The thing about New Year’s resolutions is that most people don’t keep them. It requires a lot of commitment and a lot of self discipline, which we just might not be used to. But when it comes to resolutions, there’s a particular recipe for success to truly make them stick. Before you work out what those steps are, you have to figure out the reason why you don’t stick to them. Because, believe it or not, you might be stopping yourself from achieving those resolutions. And it’s important to work out the root cause of the problem before you go about tackling it.
