he older we get, the tougher life gets, and it seems like 2017 was a tough year for most of us. But with all the problems we might’ve faced, as individuals and a country, we had many good and successful moments. With 2018 starting, we decided to adopt a new attitude and instead of focusing on the negatives, we’ll start acknowledging the positives. That’s why we decided to create a supplement dedicated to the “Best of 2017.”
With the help of our team, we came up with lists consisting of the best of the best in the Egyptian Scene – from hotels that changed the hospitalities’ maps, to new restaurants that make us appreciate the art of cooking, to designers and photographers that put Egypt on the arts’ map. My personal favorite list has to be the “Most successful Egyptians under 30” because it’s not just an accomplishment, it’s an inspiration to everyone at any age. One company we also wanted to highlight was OPPO; a company that managed to change the mobile phones industry with their creativity and drives to cater to their customer’s needs. OPPO managed to introduce the AI technology in their selfie cameras; an innovation that would literally change the selfie game, and we’re glad we got to witness it first hand as soon as it was released in Identity. Moreover, their latest collaboration with Amina Khalil was something we found very interesting in Identity since they both managed to build a big and much-respected name with Egyptians in just a few years. To wrap it up, let me just give one advice to all our readers; try and stay positive. Use the New Year as an excuse to change your perspective on life. Force yourself to be happy, and inspire yourself with other people’s success. Be a cliché and start the New Year with a new you.

Why OPPO is the Company to Beat in 2017
OPPO is a leading mobile manufacturing company that prides itself on being he selfie expert and leader in the market as it easily managed to spread all over the Egyptian streets in just a couple of years; you’ll find OPPO’s logo on almost anything and everywhere. While this by itself is a good accomplishment for a young company, but it’s not nearly half the accomplishment this company has achieved. According to IDC reports, OPPO had a growth rate of over 132% in just 2016, and that’s a big deal. OPPO’s latest phone, the F5, managed in It was the first collaboration between CFF and just over a month of its release to become the OPPO, and OPPO was far away from subtle. With “Black Horse of Phones.” OPPO’s branding all over the red carpet and the Away from the numbers, OPPO managed to create a special brand loyalty and trust in such a short time. The best example for this brand trust is the fact that their latest F5 phone managed to sellout all their pre-sale phones; meaning that people trusted the brand enough to buy their phone without having someone else try it first. OPPO didn’t use magic to achieve their current status; they just played it smart by finding their target, catering their phones to accommodate their needs, and be present in all their interests and events. In 2017, OPPO managed to build its image and make a statement in the Egyptian market. Are you into fashion? OPPO is in there. Into sports? Your favorite team is wearing OPPO sponsored shirts. Movie junkie? Oh look, OPPO is there too! We’ll just highlight the major events OPPO was present in, and have a quick look into their 2017 achievements. When OPPO Met Fashion: OPPO’s first major appearance in the Egyptian fashion scene was during the eighth edition of the top fashion event, Cairo Fashion Festival (CFF). 4 IDENTITY
main event with special branded photo ops, they managed to make a scene. The event, which was hosted by “Zeinab Hegarty” dressed in the stunning designs of Vivian Moawad Couture, had top local and global designers showcase their work; including Norine Farah, Bardess, Sara Gabr, and American designer Amanda Kamhawy just to name a few. OPPO had actress Hana Shiha and singer/actor Hany Adel as their guests of honor as well. Let’s not forget fashion guru Wadih El Najjar making his first public appearance in Egypt after his rise to fame.
By the ninth edition, OPPO took it up a notch with a green carpet, and created a competition among the fashion designers who were asked to create designs inspired by OPPO’s logo and brand identity. Up and coming designer, Eva Habashi, won a cash price for a head start to build her fashion empire, hopefully. During the presentation of the competing designs, the models showcased the new F5 phones, which was still unreleased in Egypt, and gave their fans a sneak peak. When OPPO Met Sports: While OPPO has been focusing on fashion more with the release of their F5 phone during the second half of 2017, the first half of the year OPPO
was the one to beat when it came to sports sponsorship. OPPO’s main targets are the youth, and one of the main interests for the majority of youth, kids, adults and elders alike, is sports – specifically football. That’s why they decided to support football, globally and locally. First off, OPPO renewed their partnership with top football team FC Barcelona, and to celebrate the partnership with their users, OPPO released an FCB edition of their F3 phones, which was colored red as the team’s jersey and had the logo goldplated on the back. The launch party of the limited edition phone was as grand and sporty as you’d expect. With an online competition before the event, four winners were chosen to join a full day of sports fiasco with top football players present at the event; including Ahmed Hassan, Mohamed Shawky, Weal Riad Cheetos, and Emad El Nahas. The lucky winners had the chance to play a series of football challenges with the legendary football stars, which were lucky enough to play against FC Barcelona back in 2007, and had the chance to win F3 devices. The sports sponsorship wasn’t just limited to FC Barcelona; OPPO was the main sponsor for the Egyptian Premier League for two seasons and the Egyptian national team during World Cup qualification, attributing OPPO’s name to the historic moment we’ve all been waiting for. When OPPO Meets Spidey: With the release of their Black Edition for the F3 phone, OPPO held many activations and events. Most notably was the global sponsorship of the long-awaited friendly neighbour’s movie; Spiderman-Homecoming. To celebrate the sponsorship, the release of the F3 Black Edition and the movie, OPPO held special premiere events in City Stars and VOX Cinema at Mall of Egypt. When OPPO Meets the North Coast: During the summer, OPPO took over Egypt’s hottest summer destination; the North Coast. Starting with their first event at Amwaj where they sponsored a friendly match between legendary Egyptian football stars, Ibrahim and Hussam Hassan, Hazem
Emam, Ahmed Hassan, Khaled El Ghandour, Amr Zaki, just to name a few. The match was a result of OPPO’s initiatives to encourage youth to play football, being one of the most popular sports worldwide, and to give them an incentive to use their spare time to exercise during the summer vacation. OPPO also had a game booth where the public got to play and win Spiderman toys and gifts. To make things a little bit more sophisticated, OPPO held a “Black Shadow” party at Martin’s Beach Club at Sahel’s Bo Islands. To celebrate the F3 limited “Black Edition,” OPPO gathered Egypt’s top celebrities and influencers to celebrate the launch of the phone, in black, because everything is best in black! The known-to-be-all-white-club was all black with top-notch pros that reflected the elegance and sophistication of the phone, leaving everyone with an unforgettable night. The night couldn’t have ended without a memorable group selfie, aka “gelfie” using the F3’s dual selfie camera for the best group selfies. To top it off, OPPO shocked everyone with their gigantic billboards on the Cairo/Alex road promoting their black edition phone and Spiderman-homecoming. The billboards stood at over 420 m2, and it was literally the biggest outdoors ad this year! The billboard was especially attractive at night with a stunning LED lighting staging. What’s Next for OPPO? With 2017 being an eventful and successful year for OPPO, it might seem hard for them to beat their success in 2018. That said, OPPO don’t seem like they’re stopping anytime soon. With Amina Khalil being the new face of OPPO; a star that truly reflects their tagline of “Capture the real you” by always embracing her natural beauty. With their AI technology, we can’t wait to see what they have next in stores for us. With rumors of new phones, 2018 is already doing OPPO good. Mobile companies should be worried with what OPPO’s about to bring!

Shinning in the Egyptian entertainment industry, while touching the hearts of so many people sometimes take an artist an entire lifetime, however for Amina Khalil it was hard work and genuine devotion that made her the star she is today. Amina was chosen by OPPO – a company that focuses on natural beauty and simplicity – to be the face of their new F5 phone. We had a chance to have a little chitchat with the rising star during her photo shoot with OPPO about her career, characters, collaboration with OPPO as well as her dreams and future plans.

Born in 1988, Khalil always had a passion for performing arts, which she pursued and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Art from the American University in Cairo in 2009. “I’ve always wanted to be an actress. It’s such an amazing opportunity that through creating a character, I am able to live other people’s lives, happiness, pain, and experiences.” Amina’s first TV appearance was alongside Yousra in the show “Sharbat Loz” in 2012. During Ramadan 2016’s Grand Hotel TV series, which was a massive success, actress Amina Khalil instantly won everyone’s heart. Amina Khalil on screen becomes one with the character she plays, which only reflects the amount of work and effort she puts into the finest details, and shows us that acting is merely a job but a true talent. “I just try to be as truthful as I can to the character’s life, and from that starting point, I try to be as genuine as possible under those circumstances. When the character starts coming to life in the scenes, I start seeing her, feeling her, knowing her better, and then within a scene you make choices according to the inner truths of that character.” Even playing a seemingly controversial character like Ingy from “La totfe2 el shams,” people of different opinions and views were rooting for her. “Ingy found her peace in untying herself from all the men that had caused her pain and that she chose for all the wrong reasons. she was finally able to learn that she needs to grow and find stability on her own. It was a genuine ending for her character at that time, but that doesn’t mean she will be alone forever.” While acting might be Amina’s forte, she surprised everyone with her collaboration with Zap Tharwat and Sary Hany for the hit song Nour. “The success of this song was a surprise to me. I’m glad it was able to touch as many people as it did.” The song truly managed to capture the real Amina, which leads us to her collaboration with OPPO, a company that promotes “Capturing the Real You.” Behind all the glam and glitz of being a celebrity, Amina is just a simple girl who enjoys the little things in life. “When I want to run away from the world and forget about being a celebrity, I love to

go to the beach, kitesurf, surround myself with my friends whom I love and eat lots of yummy food.” With that being said, technology has become undoubtedly a pillar of our lives. “I am very attached to my phone because it functions as my organizer, my entertainment system and my means to connect with everything and everyone. There’s an app for everything now, so if you don’t kind of accept that technology is taking over and keep fighting that, you’ll probably end up leftbehind in a very fast-paced world”. Naturally stunning Amina, who is also a firm believer of how inner beauty is key for self love made sure to deliver that message out loud at TEDx Egypt talk promoting self-acceptance. Khalil who is into photography and selfies chose to be the face of OPPO F5 phone. The OPPO F5 is the first phone in Egypt with Artificial Intelligence Beauty Recognition Technology; a new technology that identifies shapes and facial structures based on a global database conducted before the product launch from different faces and different races across the globe, emulating skills that help selfies look more real and natural. “I think artificial intelligence is a brilliant technological advancement. Learning and problem-solving applications are I’m sure helping so many people around the world. AIl in selfie-camera photography works well for the girlon-the-go who doesn’t have time or experience in editing pictures for social media. So it really depends on how you make it work for you.” “I think if filters are used within reason they can help a picture look better, but if taken to an extreme can look really weird and fake. I think that the media has unfortunately over the years tainted our vision of what true beauty is, but recently a lot of celebrities have begun to promote a much more natural and effortless look in the hopes to help boost young womens’ confidence and selfesteem and to help them understand that we are all people at the end of the day. The OPPO F5 has a break through camera which promotes the “Capture the Real You” concept because it has a very natural filter. I’m really enjoying exploring this new phone.” Said Amina after experimenting with her new Oppo F5

With our little chitchat with Amina coming to an end, we couldn’t leave without asking about her new projects and what she’s up to these days. “I’m working on two new films, one is a drama with Ahmed Daoud and Tarek Lotfy, the other is a comedy with Tamer Hosny and Akram Hosny. I’m liking how different they are, and I’m really enjoying working on them.”
For Amina, her future looks promising and that the sky is the limit. As a multi-talented celebrity, We asked Khalil if she would rather win an Oscar or a Grammy award, and she replied saying: “Since we’re dreaming, I dream to win both!” When asked to give her young fans a word of advice; she simply said “Be yourself. Be true to yourself. Be honest. Be kind. Love yourself.”

THE CAIRO HIT LIST: by Sarah Sorour
Eating out in Cairo is an experience every time. We’re bringing you the very best of Cairo 2017. This year, as always, there have been an abundant number of restaurants and cafes popping up in the big city, which has made whittling the short list down to a manageable size quite the challenge, but we’re here! It’s that time of the year where we reflect on our last 12 months, as we rub our bellies in search of a place that can reward our senses for surviving such an atrocity of a year. We’ve got you covered with the hot spots in the city. Drum roll please!
NOX OF NILE RITZ Above the bustling streets of Cairo, with stellar views of the magnificent Nile outside its tall windows, Nox at the Nile Ritz is the ultimate in having a complete nightlife experience. The stylish setting fuses cosmopolitan chic with the view influencing a romantic vibe. Cairo’s sunset is fairly underestimated, but you can enjoy it from up here. It’s quite fascinating to watch the city lights appearing as the natural light dims. The chefs serve small innovative dishes, the bar whips up handcrafted cocktails, and live performances and the DJ party away through the night. Nox has truly earned their label as “Goddess of the Night”. 14 IDENTITY
THE BEST EATERIES IN CAIRO RALPH’S GERMAN BAKERY Ralph Stocker, the founder and master baker of Ralph’s German Bakery, has finally decided to move to Cairo. He’s personally training all of the chefs in the new branch to bring out the exceptional taste we all crave from every Dahab trip. You might’ve heard of Dahab’s favourite bakery shop, and we all jumped in excitement when we heard it has finally opened its doors for Cairo’s locals in Maadi. Early risers could grab a quick bite before going to work or spend Friday morning with their families. The slow baking process and the use of Bavarian recipes are what make this bakery so special.
ANDIAMO LAKE HOUSE This charming pizza bar is designed with a blend of artsy posters, birdcage lights, with a laid-back aura, and chalkboard menus. Located in the Lake View Compound, Andiamo emits the renowned luxury of the clubhouse; a seamless place for a brunch date by day and a party house by night—a true all in one. This local favourite has a little for everyone. The menu ranges from cheesy appetizers, mouth-watering pizzas, and a variety of cocktails. It is said that the chefs at Andiamo have added a special ingredient to their tomato sauce, Vodka, we can’t confirm it, but it’s an interesting presumption.
AEON RESTAURANT & LOUNGE Fine dining in Cairo was once all about gourmet rooms, featuring the best steaks, seafood, or Italian dishes. The city still has a few traditional fine dining establishments, but today the range of fine dining in Cairo extends much further than in the past. This Korba restaurant has all the necessities for a lavish dining experience. The place has five different rooms; the dining area with traditional restaurant seating, a dim elegant bar in case you’re looking for only a drink, a bright private dining area, another room for private gatherings, and a lounge with couches which gives a homey yet fancy feel perfect for those looking for a comfortable and relaxing vibe. Aeon’s menu ranges from seafood dishes to traditional savoury steaks. IDENTITY 15
THE WHITE OWL – MAADI This place has become one of the finest restaurants, serving classic rustic Italian cuisine with a twist of vegan friendly dishes. One could have breakfast or supper in this outdoors venue and savor either eggs Benedict or eggs with Portobello mushrooms and bacon. For dessert, try a creamy treat of chocolate mousse or pick up a bag of chocolates to go, either way your sugar loving buds will love you. 16 IDENTITY

THE SMOKERY– HELIOPOLIS Chef Vincent Guillou of Tamari is the star of this place. With the Katameya branch getting outstanding reviews, it was only fair to cater to Heliopolis’ residents. The genius here is offering us everything we loved about their first spot and avoiding the things we didn’t. The re-launch almost outdid its sister restaurant. In its prime position, this venue features everything from sushi to steaks and pastas. This place has it all. This is a smart professionally-run eatery with the highest quality food and drinks. The highlight is our favorite salmon dishes with a modern twist. Let’s not forget its traditional Tuesday karaoke that brings everyone together for an epic night. IDENTITY 17

Top 8 Best Achievements in Egypt 2017 by Amina Moustapha
Here we are, standing at the starting line of a brand new year. But before we take the very first steps and start our march into 2018, let’s pause, look over our shoulders one more time and acknowledge all the achievements, all the great moments that 2017 held for Egypt. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Applause waits on success.” So let’s give a round of applause for each and every achievement; they are proof of hard work and dedication. Mohamed Salah Was Crowned Best Player of the Year This is how 2017 kicked off. On the 1st of January, Giallorossi fans gave their votes on the club’s official website and our Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah, received the most votes and was announced as the Best Player in Roma. Salah’s achievements didn’t halt on this award; he has been in stellar form ever since. He was crowned three times Player of the Month in Liverpool, one
