itting down to write the letter from the editor for December took me off guard. Is it really the end of the year already? The end of 2015? In the famous sceptical words of our senior designer Alia when I ask her to adjust a layout to fit changes to the text, “is it even possible?” Flipping the calendar to December always feels like turning the last page of a book when you feel like it shouldn’t be over yet. There was so much you planned to do when you first started the book last January. So many resolutions you had. So many big changes you wanted to make. Maybe you succeeded, but if you are like the rest of us, you were a little too ambitious and now feel let down that the year has rushed to an end and you still had so much left to do. But don’t let it get you down. We might as well enjoy what we can because everything is going to whirl by whether we like it or not. That was the inspiration behind this issue, to get out and have some fun! Life is too short to live with regrets of yesterday. Let’s leave 2015 where it belongs in the world of yesterday and welcome in 2016 with open arms!

PICK Your Party Look We always want to look on point from head to toe when going out, in case you are too busy to go get your hair professionally done, we picked two hairstyles that you can pull off in your own bathroom mirror.
UP-DO This hairstyle work on all hair types, but is better with straightened hair and only works with long hair. 1. Have a slick, low ponytail 2. Brush all the hair when you’re wrapping the ponytail 3. Flip the ponytail and bobby pin the ponytail upside down 4. You can use hair strands to hide the bobby pins 5. Pin the ponytail at the top of your head to give the illusion of fringe 6. You can get creative and play around with the ponytail and placements 7. You can choose the slick look, or choose an overall messy look
Loose Hair This hairstyle works with any hair length and hair type, and works best on unwashed hair 1. Dry you hair 2. Spray a generous amount of dry shampoo 3. Start teasing (back combing) your fringe and the top part of the hair 4. Spray your hair spray along with the teasing to make sure the hair is set in place 5. Pull back the sides of the hair and use hair wax to secure the hair 6. Bobby pin the sides to place, and on the top part if needed 7. You can braid the sides, or twist the hair if it’s too short to stay in place 8. If you have naturally straight hair, you can use a curling wand to curl your locks for more texture

MAKE-UP THAT LASTS
ALL NIGHT
What’s a party look without great make-up? And since you’ll be busy partying and won’t have time to retouch your face every five minutes, we picked two simple looks for you that will make a statement and will last the whole party.
NUDE LOOK Eyes: Instead of having an extreme black smoky eye that could smudge all over your face, replace the blacks with browns. Pick medium to dark shades of browns – the lightest shade as the base colour, darker on the crest, and the darkest on the outer corner of the eyes.
Recommended: Bobbie Brown’s Telluride Eye Palette
Eyeliner: The eyeliner finishes the whole eye look. Apply a brown eyeliner to give a dark yet natural look.
Recommended: Bobbie Brown Dark Chocolate Eye Set
Face: You can have a natural looking face base, or contour your face, depending on your preference.
Recommended: Contour Cream Kit - Anastasia Beverly Hills Lips: Keep your lips simple with a nude colour. Apply a darker shade of lip liner and fill your lips with a matte nude lipstick.
Recommended: Tom Ford Lip Colour in Sable Smoke
RED LIPS Eyes: Keep your eyes looking natural. Apply a nude base color, and blend it with only 2 shades darker over the crest to give a naturally defined eyelid. Add a touch of white shimmer to the inner corner of your eyes to make your eyes look brighter.
Recommended: Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
Eyelashes: You don’t need to put fake lashes to get the look, a good mascara will be enough. Curl your eyelashes, then apply 2 coats of mascara and you’re lashes are ready!
Recommended: Dolce & Gabbana Passion Eyes
Face: You won’t need any complicated make-up magic. Exfoliate your skin, and moisturize. If you’re skin color isn’t even, you might want to add a light coat of foundation, or a bb cream.
Recommended: Rimmel BB Cream 9-In-1 Skin Perfecting
Blush: Don’t go all crazy with the blusher. Just apply a light pink color to give your face a refreshed look. Apply it to the apple of the cheeks.
Recommended: Clinique’s Cheek Pop
Lips: Replace your lipstick routine with a good lip liner, and fill all your lips with it – it will last more. You could add a long lasting lipstick after the lip liner, and your lips will stay full and luscious the whole night.

How to put on your dancing
shoes without hating
your feet the
next day
It’s the age old question: How can I wear high heels without making me want to cut my feet off from the pain? Most of us, if not all of us, have adopted throughout the years the attitude of “Grin and Bear It,” as we are forced to choose between our love for modish shoes over our desire to be comfortable. We wrapped up five tips to help you avoid having to give up one for the other.
1.
Choose a shoe with a big platform
It is indisputable that those skinny strappy stilettos may look like a dream, but you should be more realistic about the kind of shoe that you will be wearing the whole night long. Thus, a thin sole will most probably cause you more pain for the bottoms of your feet. You should look for something with a rubberized sole to provide you a bit of a buffer. A shoe that has a bit of platform in front is more likely to reduce the incline of the foot and will provide you with more comfort.
2.
Wear insoles
Insoles are God’s gift to women; do not ever underestimate their value when planning to be on your feet all night long. The main objective of the insoles is to act as isolation pads whereby they can effectively absorb the shock or at least some of the shock that passes through the feet as they hit the floor.
3.
Sport a foot liner
Foot liners are invisible, they only cover the toe liners yet they give the same comfort of a full sock. Some of them come with a light foam pad for underfoot protection, while others come with a soft silicon strap that goes around the heels to keep them from scrunching up inside the shoe, so that you can comfortably dance the night away.

4.
Tape your toes
This may sound a little bit weird, however, the toe tape definitely helps relieve the pressure on the nerve that splits between your third and fourth toe. By taping your third and fourth toes together, less pressure is put on the nerve, which helps in reducing the pain, keeping your balance and avoiding your feet going numb.
5.
Wear open, square and round toe shoes
Heels with open, square or round toes are much more comfortable than a pointy-toed or a narrow heel while partying, as pointy-toed heels are more likely to smash the toes together and compact the ball of the foot. This can cause you to experience quick discomfort and will hinder you from enjoying the party. If you know you will be standing a lot go for round, square or open toe shoes. Always remember when you go out that you don’t want to spend the night complaining about how much your feet are killing you. You will kill the fun for yourself and everyone who has to listen to you. So follow these tips so you can rock those heels without even thinking about it, just have fun!

How to be more than eye candy at a party One of your guy friends asked you out to a party, thinking it would be fun you agreed on going. You get all dolled up, from your hair to your shoes and you’re feeling your look. The problem is, that’s the only thing you’ve got going for you tonight. You don’t know the host or any of the guests, and you’re stuck on the arm of the one who invited you. Usually when this happens, you become an accessory for the guy you’re with. None of us want that, but showing your personality and getting along with everyone might be challenging when you have to start from zero. Here are some tips to have fun at a party and be more than just eye candy.
1. Stay true to your style Let’s be real, people judge you by your looks. It’s only normal. No one would know that you carry two masters and have an IQ of 140 at first glance before talking to you. You can show your personality before the first word is shared, however, by dressing like it.
2. Introduce yourself to people Don’t wait until you get introduced, introduce yourself. As soon as you’re approaching the group you’ll be with, tell them who you are and start making small talk. If you wait until you’re introduced, it’ll give the vibe that you’re only an accessory, and chances are no one will approach you for any further conversations.
3. Don’t try to steal the spotlight This party isn’t about you. If you try to steal the spotlight, you’ll make yourself, and the friend who invited you, look bad.
4. If it’s a house party , offer to help the host It’s a great way to get to know them, and show them that you’re not a freeloader. It will also give others a good impression of you.

5. Whether you’re dating the one who invited you or not, don’t fl irt with others Again, it’ll make you and your friend look bad. While in theory, there is nothing wrong with flirting with someone you like at a party, realistically it’ll put harsh judgment about you and your friend from others.
6. You shouldn’t stick to your friend all the time, but don’t drift away Stick with your friend’s group. Drifting to other groups will make you look rude, because they’ll take it as if you’re not interested in them.
7. If all else fails, be genuine and admit it If you share with the ones you are sitting with that you’ve failed to be as sociable with them as you wanted, it’s a great way to start a conversation and get to know each other. You’re giving them the green light that you want to chat with them and not just be an accessory.

IDENTITY way of life How are significant moments in your life such as these connected to your inspiration and designs? Most of the inspirations behind my pieces are connected to the profound life-moments of my life, and they are many. The Curves© collection was inspired by the birth of my first child. Using the symbol of the embryo as the main motif, it is a reflection of my personal journey with motherhood and my commentary on issues of female identity in our region. The Geoclassic© collection was inspired by my change of path to pursue ZAGH; an enlightening snapshot in time, where a bold realization is made arising from a deep need to pursue a life-long passion of art. Using a classic pattern and presenting it in a new context and with new meaning is what ZAGH represents to me.
Zagh Riham Zaghloul lights up whenever someone asks her about her passion for design. Talking about her jewellery design brand, which is based on art, quality, and authenticity. The brand is about intriguing designs, high standards of craftsmanship, comfort, elegance, and responsibility towards our surroundings. Starting this year, each ZAGH collection has a unique story behind it inspired by nature, womanhood, architecture and ends blending with technology; Riham’s background. We are approaching the holiday season. Can you tell us about your winter collection, and why you think the designs reflect this time of year? This winter ZAGH introduced the Nimbus© and Orb© collections, one inspired by a halo of light and the other by the solar system, respectively. Although these collections were released in winter, the inspirations behind them are timeless and can be worn all year round, like many of ZAGH’s designs. What does this festive time mean to you personally and as a designer? A festive season for me is a time where I relax and enjoy time with the people I love, it is a time to contemplate and reflect on the times where we were too busy to analyse and understand. As a designer, it is a time to ‘recharge’ on inspirations; an opportunity to refuel energy to balance the times when the pressure of our daily lives can be draining.

DEC

Is all of that connected to why you choose to stay in Egypt, even though the production of your work is done in Europe? I am Egyptian and ZAGH is an Egyptian company, for me the natural thing is to be in Egypt. Although my designs are inspired to a great extent by my surroundings, they demand very specialized know-how to bring them to life. That pushes me to pursue talent and know-how wherever it may be and I refuse to be confined to a geographic location. ZAGH will remain an Egyptian brand regardless of whom I choose to be part of our team, this is a model that has proven to be successful in many industries. It happened to be that this know-how is currently in Italy and Germany, but my long-term dream is to bring this know-how home. Why is jewellery so significant to you? Why was it your destination for creativity? Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of body adornment. In my opinion, jewellery is the one thing that is a real expression of ones’ personal taste; of one’s values as well as being a status symbol. It is the one accessory that reflects the real personality; marital status, trendy, classic, religious affiliations, etc. With a background in technology on the one hand, and a life-long passion and emersion in art on the other, I blended both together and used metal and stones to express my emotions through the one thing I believe that tells the most about a woman’s taste. What can we expect to see in your upcoming collections? I am a lover of natural resources, and I have a passion of mixing material. As a lover of the ‘real’ thing it is very tough for me, for I am in a constant search for new material that is 100% natural and work well with precious metal. Currently I am working on several pieces that combine some rare stones and material with precious metals.

Party your way through exercise
If you haven’t attended a Zumba class yet then you haven’t experienced the fun of exercise! Zumba is one of the best ways to enjoy working out; it feels more of a private party than an exercise routine. If you have ever met someone who does Zumba then you probably already know how addictive it is. Whether you’re a newcomer or a professional athlete, Zumba is a great workout that combines all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, and boosts you with energy and gives you a serious dose of awesome each time you leave the class. It’s a great way to celebrate during your weekdays, and an amazing way to burn a lot of calories without noticing. Just move with the music and don’t stop! Dancing like crazy to great music is an amazing feeling. But, not only are you going to feel great, you’ll actually be exercising without even noticing. Zumba offers a variety of exotic music from all over the world and combines various dance moves: salsa, reggae, samba, hip-hop, tango, chacha, and many more. Zumba can be confusing at the beginning as it is very different from other, more traditional, fitness classes. But don’t let that stop you; you just need to focus and at the same time let yourself go and have some fun. Beginning with trying to follow the choreography, to learning a plethora of new moves, to finding your rhythm, the typical

Zumba class is always fast-paced and creative. The best part is when you get to know the music and choreography by heart, and then go crazy with it like a professional dancer when the music comes on. The vibe of any Zumba class is overwhelming; more than anything, it’s a happy place. Zumba is a great way to escape daily stress and it’s a great exercise at the same time. It is actually a great way to burn a lot of calories and shape your body; it is challenging for any fitness level and is suitable for everyone. Zumba is the kind of exercise that makes you feel great afterwards, and because you’re focusing on the music and the dancing, it doesn’t even feel like a workout. It’s great how dance and exercise can be fused together to get us out of this world, with the amazing music and extraordinary choreographies that the instructors come up with. You actually need to try it yourself to decide!

IDENTITY way of life But let me start over I have tried the textbook advice many times and it never worked the way I expected it to. I am sharing with you now my experience and sending you vibes of strength, confidence, and sister love. Acknowledge the fact that you are aching over him now because you gave him that power to hurt you. You gave him power to hurt you when you overlooked his flaws, when you accepted his lack of respect, when you allowed him to step all over you, and when you trapped yourself in the wrong relationship. Withdraw that power now. Write down on a huge poster that he no longer has the power to hurt you! Review the details of your relationship and write down every single mistake, disappointment, offence, or situation where he acted like a total jerk. Look at this list and tell yourself that those are the reasons why you are leaving him behind to sink into oblivion. Imagine him sinking and fading away. Let him fade away like a bad dream you just woke up from!
How do I move on
when he already has? Dear Marwa, Three years ago, I was in a relationship with a guy and we disagreed on almost everything since our lifestyles were totally the opposite. Our life had turned into a huge mess; however, we extremely loved each other. Our relationship lasted for around a year. Later on, he got a job offer outside the country and asked me to marry him, but I refused. I wasn’t sure at the time whether this would be the right person for me. He travelled abroad; I met other guys. But every time I went on a date with a guy, I just remembered him and compared him with the others. I thought it would be easy to move on, but apparently I couldn’t. I tried to contact him again and I found him living a great life. He told me that I wasn’t a supportive person and that he got over me. What can I do to just move on? Sincerely, Wishing to Move On
Dear Wishing to Move On, Here is the textbook reply to your question: Cry and do not fight the pain, eventually you will find your way up. Make new friends, go out to new places, and avoid anything that reminds you of him. Go to the gym. Learn something new. Get a pet. If you have made mistakes in this relationship, write them down and work on yourself. Party hard and hurt a couple of guys on your healing trip!

Think of him as a tree without a shadow; who would sit under a tree that does not offer shelter or security? Think of that miserable tree that has nothing to offer; no shade, no flowers, no fruits, no seeds, and no life! The most important advice is to work on your self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence. You deserve better! I am not deluding you. You deserve the basics; to be loved, to be appreciated, to be respected, and to be understood. You deserve to feel wanted, cherished, and desired. You deserve a partner in life, not just a male. Do not go on dates just to distract yourself! Go on a date only if you really feel that you want to get to know that person and that he has managed to arouse your curiosity. Do not pretend or fake anything. If you are unhappy, be unhappy! If you are lonely, be lonely! It will pass! Go to the gym, learn new things, and have hobbies because this is life! You are still alive and you owe it to yourself to live and to be happy! Do not punish yourself by intentionally neglecting your health or damaging your image! Remember that men come and go but you only have yourself to lean on and to live with! The wait for Mr. Right might be long but until he comes along enjoy whatever there is to enjoy! Embrace the little joys and love yourself! Remember that you are moving on because this man is not right for you and that relationship is not where you belong! You deserve better!

IDENTITY way of life increase in wealth would make us happy. Money might buy happiness; however, if you spend it on meaningful experiences instead of material items. Studies have found that experiences, like attending a theatre show, going out to dinner, going on vacation, or attending a concert can make people happier than spending money on items like clothes or electronics. Of course, there are plenty of enjoyable experiences that are free, such as taking a hike or spending time with friends, so money may not be necessary after all. Keeping positivity in your life is a good way to improve happiness on a daily basis. People who say “thank you” more often and show more gratitude tend to be happier. Other simple actions can raise our happiness levels, like simply smiling and concentrating on thinking positive thoughts. Eight hugs a day can improve happiness, according to one study. If you are feeling sad, try offering a hug – you can improve your own and someone else’s day!
How Happiness Happens Everyone seeks happiness, but the idea of happiness can be difficult to grasp. Psychologists have developed different definitions of happiness, and there doesn't seem to be one thing that makes everyone happy. According to researchers, people tend to have a “default” happiness level. Although people will often diverge from their typical default level of happiness, they are likely to return to baseline in a short time. Even when people have major positive or traumatic experiences, they are likely to return to the baseline as time passes. But what moves us away from the baseline and towards greater happiness? Money is usually one of the first things to come to mind when thinking about what makes people happy, but contrary to popular belief, money may not actually buy happiness. Even in the extreme case of lottery winners, happiness, though it may initially increase, is still likely to become closer to one’s default level over time. Most of us overestimate the extent to which an

There is even evidence that happiness can change our genes and improve our physical health. People who participate in meaningful experiences are again more likely to benefit more than those who find happiness in material items. People report different types of feel-good experiences, be it ‘feeling good’ experiences like going out to eat or buying a gift for yourself, or ‘doing good’ experiences, like doing something good for someone else or having an experience that brings meaning to your life. Although all of these experiences lead to happiness, people who reported more ‘doing good’ experiences had higher levels of antibodies and antiviral genes that protect against viruses. Research seems to support that looking for meaning in life is closely related to happiness. Positive experiences that allow for growth and social experiences, especially those that involve showing kindness to another person, are more strongly related to happiness than collecting material objects. If we want to live happy lives, it seems we must pursue internal rewards. Sources: -Leslie, S. G., Aaker, J., & Robin, C. (2010). The psychology of happiness. Stanford Graduate School of Business. The Holiday Blues
the reality check
you need to deal with Tis’ the season to be jolly, and reflect on your unproductive year! Remember your New Year resolutions? Nothing on that pretty list was accomplished. Remember when you were a kid and thought by the age you are now you would have accomplished some certain goals? You’re not even half way there. It’s really frustrating, but guess what? It’s okay!

(N.B: This article is about these who experience the holiday blues, not clinical depression. If you have depression all year round, please seek professional help.) How many times have you been a New Year’s Eve party, and you find a drunk person complaining about how this year treated him? This person probably ruins everyone’s night because, well, he’s annoying. But the reality is, he’s your real life Jiminy Cricket. The holiday season has always been the time of selfreflecting. Either because you see your family and they start asking the same questions, and you give the same answers you’ve been saying for years, or you just look back at the year and realize how it didn’t go your way. It could even be worse – you could experience pure loneliness. Many Egyptians remember the scene from Mohamed Henedy’s movie “Ga’ana El Bayan El Taly” when Henedy’s character went to interview people in the streets about what they’re doing in the NYE. The scene was a masterpiece, because of its very dark humour. It showed how depressed people were to talk about New Year’s Eve. While the ones in the movie are very underprivileged and have obvious reasons to be depressed, you have the reason to be depressed too, even if you feel you have been blessed with much more than them. You might theoretically have everything anyone could wish for, but that doesn’t mean you have to be happy. We all have skeletons in our closet, and they’re always out to dance around us by the end of the year. We’ve all said “this year was terrible for me” at least once, thinking it was just a bad year. But we’d like to burst your bubble and slap you in the face with a reality check – life is terrible, not the year! Some could be upset from certain events in their lives that happen or over general things we all go through, but the common ground is that life has it’s downs and we have to deal with them purposefully.
High expectations and the disappointments that follow
One of the most common causes for the blues is failing to reach the high expectations you set for yourself last New Year’s Eve. We all have high expectations from life; it’s a normal thing, and being disappointed for not achieving these expectations is a normal thing too. What you need to learn is to accept your failure. We all fail, and we all get disappointed and it’s a part of life. It’s only a matter of how to deal with it. Just remember, either don’t have any expectations for the next year, or at least be realistic about them.
phone’s screen. Some avoid these events intentionally, and some don’t even get invited. If this is your only problem, then you should be thankful. I know, I know, it sounds like it’s the end of the world to feel alone, but it’s very fixable. As hard as it might sound, you could try to reach out to others. Call your family, distant family, coworkers, friends, or even strangers. If all else fails, take yourself out on a date. Head to a spa, day use in a hotel, travel somewhere, luckily the New Year’s Eve this year is on a Thursday and you could use the weekend for a quick getaway.
Looking back at your year
You shouldn’t look back and “reflect” on how bad your year was. The past happened and you can never change it. Beating yourself up won’t change anything. The only thing you can do is to learn from your mistakes. If you really want to reflect on the year, don’t just look at it and cry about it. Analyse your actions and outcomes, and see how you could learn and improve yourself. Other than that, there are no other reasons to reflect.
Treat it like any other day
If you can’t deal with everything, just treat it like any other normal day. It’s not the time to “start over,” nor is it the time to reflect. Just binge watch your favourite show, or do whatever you’d normally do and get the day over with.
Embrace your troubles
Know that it’s okay, even healthy, to be troubled. It’s okay to feel down. It’s okay to feel like giving up. It happens to the best of us, and it’s normal and even healthy. There’s nothing wrong with you, and nothing is wrong with your holiday blues. You could try and make yourself feel better about it, but if you can’t, it’s okay. You’re okay.
It’s a good time to start a New Year fresh with a new, and better, perspective on your life. Learn from your mistakes, and try to work on yourself. It’s never too late to change yourself, or to acquire new skills and hobbies. Make the best out of every year, and stop dwelling over what you can’t change.

WHAT HAPPENED
Christmas?
Christmas is everywhere. It fills the malls with bright, glittering displays of Christmas trees covered in red and gold bulbs. It’s on sale in the storefronts with their huge Christmas discounts. It covers the hotel and club calendars with special events themed just for the occasion. But in all of that, Christmas is really nowhere. For centuries holidays have brought us together. They are a time set aside to come together and be with friends and family. To prepare food together, eat together, celebrate together, and enjoy the blessings that we have. This is no different for the Christmas and New Year season. It's a beautiful season, full of the spirit of giving and thinking of others, and Egypt has the opportunity to make the most of it since the festivities start with Western Christmas in December, and extend through New Year’s all the way to Eastern Christmas in January. But even though there is so much opportunity to celebrate, it seems that there is less and less true celebration each year. When did Christmas become so fake? It’s not saying anything new that holidays have become ridiculously over commercialized. It’s hard to ignore: the advertisements, the sales, the decorations, the events. Any opportunity that could possibly exist to make money out of these traditions have been packaged and sold to anyone in line. Every year it just becomes more “in your face” than the past. You might want to hold onto the “true meaning” of the holiday but it becomes harder and harder to remember what is genuine and what the industry just wants you to spend your money on. Because of the commercialization and Westernization of the whole thing, how the Christian holiday is celebrated in a Muslim country is complicated. Cafes and stores can have fun decorating their windows and front rooms with trees, tinsel, and Santa hats without any actual base in the meaning of the holiday. It’s all show. It doesn’t mean that they will spend time with their family and appreciating their blessings, it just looks cute. It’s not just Christmas. Other holidays have fallen victim to the same problem, where all of the glamour and pizzazz is used without thinking twice about why it’s a holiday in the first place. Take St. Patrick’s Day, what has turned into one of the biggest drinking days of the year. When bars are holding their month-long Shamrock specials and green-themed parties are everywhere, do people stop and think about how Saint Patrick was an actual person in Ireland’s history? Do they think about how he is credited with bringing Christianity to the country, and that the famous
56

clover is said to have been used by Saint Patrick to explain the holy trinity to the Irish? Probably not. The phenomenon that we are dealing with now is that holidays are not being used to celebrate the point of the holiday, they are used as a reason to celebrate celebrating. It’s like they are just a series of parties that are conveniently already planned into the calendar every year with a theme already chosen for them. The holidays that have been kept by societies for centuries have been made as fake as Facebook events and Instagram posts capturing the “spirit of the season” in a convenient little square. It seems that holidays are just basically trending at this point, and don’t have much more meaning than that. Just another way to blow your salary and get crazy at another party. Of course, going out is fun and holidays are a great chance to celebrate. But when they get so fake and far away from the original point, it’s time to take a step back and consider if it’s the best way to celebrate the holiday. If the holiday is built on your beliefs, take that opportunity to strengthen them and enjoy the true meaning. If the holiday is based in a belief set other than your own, take the opportunity to spend more time with your family and friends. Celebrate with a purpose, not because it’s “what everyone else is doing.”

STEVE JOBS INTERVIEW WITH JEFF DANIELS
With a remarkable career that’s been spanning for nearly four decades, Jeff Daniels – born in Georgia, USA – has been one of the biggest Hollywood actors with many iconic films under his belt. His latest role is the portrayal of John Scully in the movie Steve Jobs, a movie directed by Danny Boyle, with a dazzling screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. Daniel shares his experience with meeting Sculley, how he studied his character, and his overall view on the movie. Steve Jobs is set over three acts, each one set backstage as Jobs prepares to present his latest technological innovation to the world and each time revealing more about the man some regarded as a monster and most agree was a visionary. Tell us about who you play in the film I play John Sculley who Steve brought in from the Pepsi Company. John had been a very successful CEO and marketing guy at Pepsi and Steve needed that. The young Steve Jobs – as Sculley later finds out – needed a father figure. The first couple of years, it was just such a wonderful marriage between those two guys – ‘I’ll do the business, you be the visionary.’ Sculley made a business decision to basically save the company and Steve never forgave him, so then it becomes this kind of tragic fall for Sculley because even though he believed he was right and had the board’s backing that he was right, Steve still destroyed him. It’s very Shakespearean.

DEC

What was meeting Sculley like when you had to portray him on screen? First of all, it was a pleasure to meet him. You are studying him like a shrink would study a patient and you get him talking, and he’s telling you about what it is. Some of it is exciting because he’s on a movie set and some of it is revealing. And what I took away from John, even though he is doing very well now and working with other companies, is that the pain was still there from the break up with Steve Jobs. It’s like he says in the movie, ‘All the things we could have done together…’ Once they parted, they never came back and I think there’s a hole there for Sculley. You know he’s recovered from it, but there was a period of time when this wasn’t just a job. It was important and personal, and I don’t think he’ll ever get over it. Could you put Jobs and his colleagues into context? What do you think historians will make of them in say fifty years’ time? Jobs and his colleagues certainly are people much like the great industrialists and the guys who invented the railroad because they changed the world for better or for worse. I wish Steve could come back, and we could talk about that a little bit (laughs). You know when you are sitting in a theatre and people are on their phones. It would be, ‘Steve, this is a problem. Let’s see if we can’t fix this? No one is paying attention anymore, Steve. Was that the idea?’ I don’t think so. And you know what, he would come up with something to fix that.
What did you know about Steve Jobs before this? I only knew that Steve Jobs was the guy who had created Apple and Mac. I didn’t know any of the family history. Not even until the movie, or until I read Walter [Isaacson]’s book, did I kind of hear how difficult he was to work with and be with. That was all new information to me. What kind of research have you done for the part of John Sculley? There was Walter’s book, and there are many YouTube clips of John Sculley giving speeches or being on panels. Even though he might have been selling a book with David Carr, you could kind of get a feel for at least what he sounded like and how he handled himself in public. Then, I got to meet him. He came out to rehearsal and that helped a lot. You could see he was very proud of his initial relationship with Steve and wished it had ended better. Certainly in the long run Steve was right about the Mac, but John made the prudent business decision at the time. He wished they could have reconciled. You can still see that. There was some pain still there, which meant that relationship with Steve was one that he cherished. In reality, Sculley and Jobs never spoke beyond the 80s, but in the film, they get their final showdown. Do you feel the scene represents Steve’s conscience finally catching up with him? That certainly is one aspect to it. I think maybe in Steve’s distorted reality, or whatever that phrase is, he might have thought like that. Aaron [Sorkin] certainly didn’t tell me that. It just felt like a meeting that the real Sculley wished had actually happened; that’s how I looked at it. What was it like to shoot that intense argument in the auditorium? You can hear your voice echo because of the reverb, so that just feeds it, at least for us doing the scene. Michael [Fassbender] is such a pro, and we did that scene together. You work really, really hard. You get it up to that speed, and cut it. Then you say, ‘I blew that one little thing.’ He goes, ‘Yeah, I cut you off there. I’ll make sure I don’t next time,’ and you say, ‘Okay, thanks.’ Now you’re working together. Now it’s like a dance – at very high energy, throwing verbal right hooks – but it’s a dance, and that’s why it’s a pleasure to work with people like Michael.
you don’t want them to do it exactly like you would do it as you wrote it. You want them to see what they would do that is maybe even better, and Aaron has done a great job with that. How would you describe the film? It’s not a straight biopic but more Aaron’s take on Jobs? Yes, it might be Aaron’s take on Jobs. It’s so dense and so full of a story and script. Steve Jobs was such complicated guy and he surrounded himself with very rational people. He wasn’t an idiot; he knew he needed those kind of people around him, and Sculley was one of them. Danny Boyle made it a Danny Boyle movie. It’s so exciting. Danny kept asking, ‘Do you want to see the monitor? Do you want to see dailies?’ I just told him that I wanted to see it when he was done with it. I said, ‘Here’s what I’m giving you and I can’t wait to see when you’ve done all of your work.’ And that’s the thrill of being with a filmmaker like Danny Boyle because you know you are in a Danny Boyle movie, and only Danny could make this kind of movie in this way. You won an Emmy® award, how was that? Well, it was a surprise to everybody in the room. On the way over to the awards, I asked my wife because I wasn’t going on the internet. I said, ‘What are my chances?’ She said, ‘Well, it’s between you and Hugh Bonneville for fifth or sixth (laughs).’ I said, ‘Okay, we’re just going for the food. No problem.’ There was so much love and respect for the other shows: Homeland, House of Cards, Modern Family, Mad Men, Breaking Bad. We were at their party, and one by one, other people (not the favourites) started winning, so I was frantically getting something ready right before they called my name. That’s where I came up with that joke. I had an ending and a middle - thanked my wife, thanked HBO - and I needed a joke. The joke was true: ‘I don’t win things, but the last thing I won was for The Squid and the Whale back in 2005. I won the Best Actor Over 50 from the AARP,’ and it just killed them. I should have walked off then.
You’ve worked with Aaron many times. How did it work on this one? Did he come on set when you were filming? Aaron did the same thing on Steve Jobs as he did on The Newsroom. He’s there first thing in the morning and you go through the script, and he may say, ‘That’s important’ or ‘That’s a joke’ and then he’s gone. He’s back in his hotel writing his next movie and he gives you the freedom, with Danny Boyle’s help of course, to do what you think it is. Arthur Miller said, ‘I look forward to seeing what my work inspires in others.’ Aaron is like that. If you hire a great director and good actors, you are in good hands, but

Romanov
Redefining the steakhouse experience at Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski
K
empinski opened their eagerly-anticipated branch in Egypt, Kempinski Royal Maxim Palace, in First Settlement, and the hotel genuinely looks like it’s out of a fairy tale. It’s not just for visitors to enjoy, the hotel also has a variety of restaurants, bars and lounges for all tastes. We visited Romanov, a restaurant that they say is “the European grill room that redefines the traditional steakhouse experience.” The impressive menu started with the Chilled selection, followed by the Raw Bar, which mostly consisted of sea food platters. Then there were the salads. We opted for the Caesar salad from the salads menu, and the Salmon Roes from the Raw Bar. The waiter told us the food would be ready in less than 10 minutes, and the food was on our table in less than the promised time. The Caesar salad was big enough to be a main plate by itself, and while we were skeptical while ordering the Salmon Roes, afraid it would be just a few samples, the plate was much bigger than expected and the presentation was also a piece of art. As for the taste, the Caesar salad was balanced perfectly, and wasn’t just a pile of lettuce like in many places. The Salmon Roes was seasoned perfectly, and the sauces and the variety of flavours didn’t overpower each other. For the main dishes, we chose the deviled spring chicken, and the waiter recommended the chateaubriand cut
Australian beef. We asked for it to be cooked as medium rare, something that’s hardly ever perfected. Our plates were out in a little over 10 minutes, and their presentation was phenomenal! With the meat dish being served, a waiter approached our table to let us pick the cutting knife, with a variety of three knives to choose from. We picked our knife, and decided to put the cooking to the test. As soon as the meat was cut, we could see it was perfectly seared from the outside, and it was pink from the middle. They really did perfect the cooking! The taste for both dishes thoroughly impressed us. When we were done eating, the waiters approached us with a tray full of delectable desserts. Even though we could barely breathe from all the food, we still made room for one dessert – the strawberry Romanov. It looked like a piece of art on a plate, and it tasted as good as it looked! The manager later came and asked us if we had enjoyed the food, and recommended that we have drinks over at the pool that the restaurant overlooks. It’s a great place to relax after such a fantastic dining experience. Our overall experience was extremely pleasant. With Romanov’s cozy atmosphere and scrumptious food, it makes a great location for a memorable date.
Brunch at Cairo MArriott
I was over the moon to hear that the infamous brunch at Cairo Marriott Hotel was finally back. I knew it would be an amazing experience; I had tried it once last winter and my taste buds couldn’t wait for it to return. Without a second thought, I grabbed my bag and rushed off to pay the Cairo Marriott a visit.
It was a sunny Friday, a perfect day to be spent in the promenade area and enjoy the pleasant Egyptian winter weather. After being welcomed by the restaurant assistant manager, I sat at a beautifully set table. I had a drink and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, complete with a refreshing breeze and the amazing Jazz band that was performing. The service was excellent; the waiters were very nice and helpful with anything that I needed. When my curiosity got the better of me, I decided to go explore the infinitely long procession of food and chefs buffet. The buffet was overflowing with tantalizing choices that seemed like they would never end. I didn’t know how I was supposed to choose which delicacies to actually put on my plate. The options included the following: The appetizers consisted of mezzeh, a wide variety of cheese, bread and cold sea food, including smoked salmon, crab, and more. The main courses had options for all tastes, including stuffed chicken, meat with brown sauce, duck, fish, gratin, mixed grilled vegetables and much, much more. There was also sushi from the Torii Japanese Restaurant, you can choose from what’s ready or ask the chef for a specific order. Pasta lovers would never be disappointed, because there is an entire corner where you have a variety of pasta types and sauces to choose from. Just when you think there couldn’t be more, there is the grill corner where you have all types of meat. Two chefs
are there to help and provide you with what you want including shawerma, chicken, kofta, shish tawook, and anything else you could imagine. Last but not least, you better have saved room for dessert because the endless dessert corner is too tempting to ignore. After having a tour of the buffet, I decided to try everything with small portions so I wouldn’t have to miss a thing, and it was all incredible. There wasn’t any better way to end my dining experience than with a sweet ending of their scrumptious apple pie and konafa. Overall, the ambience, food and service were great; I enjoyed every moment and will definitely be going back! Cairo Marriott Hotel’s brunch is every Friday from 1 to 5 pm. I suggest you try the grilled kofta and shawerma, pasta rose and gratin potatoes; you won’t regret it.
