CHRISTMAS GAMES FOR YOUR HOUSE PARTY by Rana Ramez

Christmas house parties are very important; they will determine the future of your NY’s party and any other parties you intend to have during the upcoming year. Throwing lame house parties is a reputation that can stick with you. Thus, we’ve gathered a list of easy and fun Christmas party games that can turn even the lamest Christmas parties into the most amusing ones. At First, Icebreakers 1. SANTA FINDS OUT WHO This one is a perfect way for your guests to get introduced to each other in a fun way. The idea here is to see how fast they can do it. 2. ORNAMENT GUESS Let your guests give their guesses about the number of ornaments decorating your Christmas tree when they first walk in. You can give a small prize to the one with the closest guess. 3. LIFE EXPERIENCE BINGO Prepare a bingo board filled with life experiences such as: eaten sushi, been to Europe, masters holder, etc. This is a perfect starter game, especially if your crowd isn’t familiar with each other.

10 IDENTITY

4. TWO LIES AND ONE TRUTH With setting a holiday theme like “Best Christmas Gift You’ve Received” or “Worst Christmas Party You’ve Attended”, each person will tell 3 stories (2 lies and 1 truth obviously). The others should try to spot the one true story. When The Party Gets More Intimate…….. 5. NAME THE CHRISTMAS SONG All you need is a flash memory full of Christmas songs and speakers. Play 10 seconds of a Christmas carol and find out who between your guests has the best musical ear. 6. WHAT’S INSIDE THE SOCKS? Stuff a Christmas sock with random items and tie a ribbon around its top. Pass it around to your guests so that everyone can feel what’s inside and write down their guesses. The winner is the one with the highest number of right guesses. 7. CHRISTMAS MOVIES TRIVIA AND CHARADES You can find many Christmas movies trivia online. Print some and check how well (or not) your guests know their Christmas movies. You can also play charades by acting out titles of Christmas movies or songs. 8. THEMED TWENTY QUESTIONS GAME Twenty Questions is a guessing game where people try to recognize a certain thing in 20 questions or less. Play the game by using Christmas terms and objects and let the guessing begin. 9. ORNAMENT AND TWO SPOONS Instead of racing with an egg on a spoon, your party peeps will have to carefully race with the back of a spoon in their mouth holding an ornament. The winner team is the fastest one who will make it without dropping the ornament. 10. JINGLE IN THE TRUNK Your guests will have to knock out as many jingle bells as they can out of tissue boxes fixated above their heads. The trick here is that they cannot use their hands! You’re in for some laughs here.

At the end, with little to no preparation, you can have a Christmas party that your guests will remember for a long time. And that will ensure their showing up to any other party as long as you are the planner.

Gifts for Everyone

by Rana Ramez

Christmas season is a wonderful time to get into the holiday spirit but a hard time for the mind and the wallet. The search and purchase of gifts is a real challenge, and it usually ends up with tacky common presents that are offered just for the sake of giving gifts. This year, IDENTITY will be your guide to get your loved ones thoughtful gifts, far from the traditional ones, and without going bankrupt. Gifts for Her 1. NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS Girls are fond of the 100% natural handcrafted beauty products, like natural soaps, hair products, lotions, scrubs, bath and body products. You can find those at Nefertari, Body Cravings, IN Natural, Urban Ducks, Body Bakes, Eden Greens and the list goes on and on! 2. HANDMADE CROCHET AND TRICO WINTER ACCESSORIES From headbands and scarves to beanies and pantoufles, cosy winter accessories are great gifts that will keep her warm. You can find great items at Triconuts, Tricoche and Le Tricotage. 3. FRAGRANCES AND BODY SPLASHES The Bodylicious body splashes smell just Yummy! With fresh long-lasting scents and a creative variety of essences like candy heaven, pink vanilla fusion, apple cinnamon and coconut breeze; this is every girl’s dream. Gifts for Him 4. CAR CLEANING GIFT SET The way some guys obsess about their cars is no secret. Feed that obsession and prepare him a basket filled with car items such as air freshener, car wipes, car washing soap and a brush. 5. SOCKS The older we grow, the more we appreciate socks. That’s a fact. You can get one of a kind, super creative and fun socks and also the fancy ones from Sort Designer Socks and Sockseh.

6. COLD WEATHER ACCESSORIES Just like you ladies, men enjoy being cosy and warm in winter. And since these small winter items always go missing the moment you need them; mittens, scarves and gloves are kind gifts that people will always need more of. Gifts for the Home 7. FRAMED POSTERS AND/OR QUOTES Think of something so relevant to the family you’re giving the present to. It can be a nice concert poster of their favourite music band, some of their favourite quotes or anything they’re passionate about. Find a unique high-quality print on the internet, frame it and Voila! 8. SCENTED AND CARVED CANDLES There is something super special about houses decorated with candles. Get some scented and carved candles from Ikea and Bernini Candles. You can also customize it with their names at Yoby’s Candles. 9. BOX FILLED WITH DECORATIVE RECIPE CARDS Recipe books and recipes from the Internet are very impersonal. You can choose some easy delicious recipes and add them on decorative cards in a cute little box. This one is a great gift for newly married couples.

The value of the gift has nothing to do with its retail price, and inexpensive gifts are not cheap gifts. Spread the joy with your heartfelt amiable gifts that say you truly care! IDENTITY 11

2019’s Motto for Beauty Products:

Go Green ! by Samar El-Swaify

A new year always means new beginnings, and a new beginning needs to be a healthy one. We have been exhausting our hair and skin with chemicals in our everyday choice of products and makeup to the point that damaging them became a daily routine. We, hereby, introduce to you some natural alternatives, in order to reduce the effects of chemicals on your hair and skin.

COMBS AND BRUSHES Wooden combs and brushes glide through smoothly and make detangling so much easier, adding volume and bounce to your hair. The Body Shop has a variety of bamboo brushes and combs as well.

Since our hair is a regular subject to heat, we can’t damage it further by using shampoos and hair dyes that contain sulphate and ammonia. L’Oreal released their plant-based 100% natural hair dye, Botanea, in 2017. They also offer sulphate free shampoo and conditioner with coconut oil and cocoa butter. Pandora Egypt also produces natural shampoo with jojoba oil, in addition to their bestseller, hair oil which stimulates hair growth and limits hair loss.

BODY PRODUCTS FACE PRODUCTS The Body Shop’s collection of Vitamin E facial products are getting tons of positive reviews. The collection constitutes of a cleanser, a gentle wash, a night cream, a moisture lotion and a face mist that will all help your face glow.

Bath & Body Works offers a variety of natural Shea butter body creams with different fragrances. Imtenan also brings a group of natural soaps with milk and honey, Dead Sea mud and honey and oatmeal. Similarly, Urban Ducks offer a natural body and face scrub with green tea.

MAKEUP Bourjois is setting an example for other makeup brands to go green with its Bio Detox Organic Foundation and Perfecting Powder. The Body Shop also offers natural makeup for all types of skin, to give your skin a much needed break from chemicals. Their bestsellers include Brow Sculpt 3-In-1, Fresh Faced Finish Foundation and Matte Lip Liquid Lipstick.

Winter Edition by Nahed Kazziha

BLACK POLO FOR THE WIN Arguably the most versatile winter garment you own. The black turtle neck opens up a closet of possibilities you need when navigating the cold. Wear it under blouses, dresses, blazers; you name it!

WINTER SHIRT DRESS It is not your usual shirt dress. It is in fact the best way to take a drab sweater dress and give it some character. Use a neutral dress as a foundation and button up an extra shirt over it to create a fun mixture of colours and patterns.

It is about time to embrace the winter cold, especially after what seems like an endless summer. Of course, winter can be tricky- one day the sun is out; the next it is raining cats and dogs. The best way to cope with flip-flopping climate is to always be prepared. Since walking around town with a carry-on luggage is not an option, the solution is simple: weave contingencies into your daily outfit. Here is a look at some more sophisticated solutions to the winter styling conundrum.

COATS ON COATS

Side step the boring old foulard mold and grab a wrap to cover up. Now pick a statement belt to cinch the granny staple at the waist and you have a self-made cardigan to cocoon yourself in for the winter.

When one coat just is not heavy enough, why not grab a second one? Mix and match patterns or colors, but the key is to always have one light layer underneath a heavier one. Think trench and wool for the win.

VESTED INTEREST The ultimate go-to garment for unpredictable weather is undoubtedly the vest. Zero in on a statement gilet that will effortlessly add some needed flair to your wintery black staples.

SWEATER BLOUSE Cannot bear to bid your favourite lightweight shirt adieu for the season? Fear no more, the sleeve-work is already there, so all you need is a short sleeve sweater to fight the cold off. Wear it under or over the blouse as you desire.

DRESSED DOWN Kaftan dresses are not a thing of the past. Turn up the volume on the easy breezy gown by pairing it with some sturdy dark wash denim and a polo neck underneath. Then grab your heels and get walking.

orn to a family that appreciates and collects art, Bardees Gamal Eldin’s early years were punctuated with antiques. For as long as she can remember she has mastered the language of authentic art; being able to grasp their origins with one glimpse. Meanwhile, she has grown up to cultivate a sophisticated taste. Accordingly, details and cultural expression have always been embedded in her personality. With museums being her favored spaces, she knows the world’s most celebrated pieces of art like the back of her own hand.

With a degree in marketing, Bardees joined her father’s tourism business fresh out of university. Nonetheless, it was not long until her work in operations was interrupted by the 25th of Jan revolution. After a long-enough period, she decided to follow an old passion and learn a new skill. Accordingly, she took her first fashion course to turn her raw talent into design techniques and pattern-making skills. “I have always had a thing for fashion – I love clothes.” Bardees added passionately “at the beginning, I only wanted to study design then I realized that I cannot envision clothes without an understanding of pattern making. I cannot sketch things that are unattainable.” Her first collection came to light in 2015, when she decided to start her own atelier in Zamalek with one sewing machine, a seamstress and unconventional designs. Once the first order was confirmed, the designer instantly started to grow her team and address regional markets. With art being her main source of inspiration, she is also quite keen to remain in touch with the market’s preferences. While aiming to follow her imagination, she never plans to turn her back to what her clients actually want. According to Bardees, the beachwear collection and Ramadan Abayas were added as an answer to multiple requests from her regular customers. As someone who appreciates fashion and collects art, each piece has to live to her personal standards. The designer is never satisfied with pieces that she would not add to her own wardrobe. Bardees hopes to address the world with her fresh eye and extraordinary take on fashion. Meanwhile, she hopes to represent local fashion around the globe through artistic design, exceptional quality and attention to details.

REAL LOVE VS. SUPERFICIAL LOVE by Marwa Rakha

“He is too short”, “She is not curvy enough”, “I don’t like curly hair”, etc. All of us have heard some of our friends negatively comment about the looks of the people they date and maybe thought “Wow! That’s superficial”. But is it? We’re visual creatures after all, we can’t always find a flower beautiful just because it smells sweet. And at the end of the day, your partner will be the first person you see when you wake up and the last person you see before you go to sleep, so physical attraction and admiration is indeed important. The question is, to what extent? We reached out to our Relationship Expert, Marwa Rakha, to learn more. 1. Is physical attraction and admiration a must in a relationship? Can it be a deal-breaker? The first stage of a relationship is indeed attraction; attraction in this sense is physical, mental, or even chemical. It is hormones in action. Some people call it “click”, and others call it “magic”. Without this “magnetism”, the relationship will never launch. Having said that, there are people who “grow on you”. When you meet, you like their company and by time you get addicted to them. These people are like an interesting story that unfolds bit by bit, and you get hooked on the intricacies of that story. 2. When does it stop being a matter of attraction and start being a matter of superficiality? Most people know what attracts them to others and what repels them. Some people have lists of things they find repulsive and are very strict about their lists.

34 IDENTITY

“I would never date a person who is overweight”, for example. If we pursue the same example, some people do not like having a partner who is overweight, but they can live with it. They find that person appealing on so many other levels and they do not focus on the weight issue. Some people believe that “weight” is one the things that can be changed by diet or workout, or surgery. They can motivate their partner, or bluntly force them, to take serious steps towards the weight loss goal. Superficiality is a totally different thing; a man expects his partner to wear make-up all the time, or to always have her hair done, or to dress-up daily. A superficial woman frowns upon her partner if he missed a shave or did not look like a movie star at all times. Superficiality is not accepting the human aspects of your partner; we all pee, poop, burp, fart, sweat, and can look less than ideal on certain days.

3. If my partner pointed out something he does not like about my looks or appearance, how should I take it? And when should I start to have concerns? A loving partner would always want you to look and feel your best. Many women and men find it normal to add their touches to a loved one’s wardrobe. Some might choose their perfumes and colognes. There are many ways your boyfriend, or girlfriend, could interfere with your daily care routine. There are two major things to look out for: How the comment is said and how you feel about it. If the comment sounded rude, aggressive, disapproving, insulting, humiliating, or offensive; you need to stop and reconsider this relationship. If the comment was said in a nice way but you are not willing to take that extra step to change something about your looks, you should be open about how you feel. For example, you have curly hair. Your partner makes fun of your head in public or privately. Think of ending this relationship.

Generally, do not declare your love or attraction to a person before you have given yourself enough time to see them and talk to them several times. Go out for early breakfast, after work lunch, evening strolls, and late-night parties. Meet them early in the morning, after long workdays, on weekends, and on vacations. Take your time getting to know a person, you never know, they might simply grow on you. I would also advise you to have realistic expectations when it comes to appearances. At one point, you will see one another without make-up, without shaving, ruffled and muffled, sweaty and smelly, bloated and bed-ridden, pregnant and postpartum, etc. Accepting that your partner’s appearance will change over time is one of the ways to help you shift your focus on core issues like kindness, support, respect, trust, commitment, common interests, and generosity.

Whether you decide to stay or leave, do not leave scars behind you. Do not hurt that person because of what you think is unattractive. Attraction is relative and karma is a bitch.

Or, your partner asks you to permanently or daily straighten your hair. If you like your curls, or if you are unwilling to chemically treat your hair, or if you cannot go to the hairdresser daily, then you need to express how you feel clearly. 4. Should I point it out to my partner if there is something in their appearance that I don’t like? Or could this be a sign that I don’t love this person enough? If you do not like your partner’s teeth, for example. What can they do about it? Your comment will only make them feel offended and, on a deeper level, insecure. If the teeth issue can be taken care of easily by a visit to the dentist, then maybe you can bring it up. The most important thing is to find a decent way to direct your partner’s attention to this issue. If you have a bunch of things that you do not like about your partner – their hair, skin, body shape, and scent – then you need to keep that person as a friend instead of hurting their feelings brutally. On a final note, appearance is one of the very first things you get to know/see about a person. If you have serious concerns about that person’s appearance, do not get emotionally involved with them. If you do not find them attractive and appealing to you, do not attempt a relationship with them. IDENTITY 35

THE CULTURAL EVOLUTION THROUGH MEMES by Raghda Elsayed

Memes became a major part of millennial culture; how many times have you had a full conversation with your friends using just memes? It truly has become a full language all on its own. But did you ever stop and think how it originated or how it became a main mean of communication?

First things first, what really is a meme? By definition, a meme is an activity, concept, catchphrase, or piece of media that spreads, often as mimicry or for humorous purposes, from person to person via the Internet. Realistically, a meme is a forcefully spread idea on the internet that challenges others to either follow it or outdo it.

This year, we had a meme for every occasion – the good and bad. While memes were widely used all over the world, thanks to the likes and popularity of social platforms like Reddit and 4chan, only this year have they become oh-so-popular in the mainstream Egyptian culture.

The question remains, how did memes manage to take over our lives? A little meme history lesson; you might have thought that the concept of a meme had originated by some teenager on the internet, but it is far from that. The

36 IDENTITY

term meme comes from the Greek word “mimema,” meaning, “imitated.” It was first introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work ‘The Selfish Gene’. Dawkins used the term “meme” in the scientific hypothesis about the evolution of human culture; perceiving memes as the cultural parallel to biological genes. He stated that memes are similar to “selfish” genes, as they both are in control of their own reproduction and thus serving their own ends. Dawkins wrote, “Memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation.” In his book, Dawkins explained that genes and memes carry information, replicated, and transmitted from one person to another, and they have the ability to evolve, mutating at random, and undergoing natural selection, with or without impacts on human fitness. When did memes start evolving? Cultural change and idea theory are not something quantifiable, and it is near impossible to predict what will happen next. Dawkins himself did not predict that the idea of memes will take off as much as he predicted, making the idea of memes by itself somewhat of a meme. In 1976, in the first edition of ‘The Selfish Gene’, Dawkins wrote, “The computers in which memes live are human brains.” In 1989, when he released the second edition of ‘The Selfish Gene’, Dawkins began programing himself, and he had to amend his book by adding: “It was obviously predictable that manufactured electronic computers, too, would eventually play host to self-replicating patterns of information.” Information was passing from one computer to another “when their owners pass floppy discs around”. Now the main difference between genetics and memes is that genetics are physical and uncontrollable, yet memes are the product of ideas that are specific to each person, right? This might be up for debate. The “idea theory” is not set-in-stone; they are theories and will always remain theories. Biologist Jacques Monod wrote about the “memes ideology” and said, “Ideas have retained some of the properties of organisms. Like them, they tend to perpetuate their structure and to breed; they too can fuse, recombine, segregate their content; indeed they

too can evolve, and in this evolution selection must surely play an important role.” Does that mean memes are bad? Just like everything it has its pros and cons. Memes will always remain a source of self-expression and humour, while still being able to express beliefs and statements through them. Here is the catch, the said beliefs and statements do not necessarily have to be good ones. Extremists have jumped on the meme wagon themselves – from ISIS to white supremacists. They do share their ideologies through light and humorous memes, making it easier for them to reach a broader audience without being too obvious about it. Funnily enough, in July of this year European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs voted to make memes illegal. This was, and still is, very interesting to witness; given that there is, almost no way they can manage doing that. They stated that their motive, however, is copyrights issues, rather than being in control of the ideas spread online. Where does Egypt stand in all this? Oh boy, where do we begin? Egyptians’ use of memes is rather interesting. What’s interesting is the fact that Egyptians are followers, and the meme wagon is a follow you can’t miss. Egypt is one of the few countries where celebrities are being adamant about the use of memes. Take Fathy Abd El Wahad for instance; the man went from being a supporting actor that most won’t remember, to top actor through memes. It started when he, himself, became a meme, and he had a good sense of humor about it and went on with it. Mohamed Henaidy did the same thing as well. On the other hand, memes were used to push political agendas as well, with numerous Facebook pages being taken off Facebook, and even some interrogated by the authorities for a meme they created. Where will memes go next? You have to wait and find out, but we have a very interesting quote by Dawkins to conclude. “What lies at the heart of every living thing is not a fire, not warm breath, not a ‘spark of life.’ It is information, words, instructions... If you want to understand life, don’t think about vibrant, throbbing gels and oozes, think about information technology.” Richard Dawkins

2019 A Journey

towards More SELF AWARENESS AND A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE by Amna Magdy

With another year coming to a close end, we start reflecting on our own personal development and achievements throughout its entirety. We then sit down to set our targets for the upcoming year and envision how we would like to see ourselves by the end of 2019. If you’re searching for an initiative to embark on a journey towards more self awareness and a healthier lifestyle, stick around. STEPS FOR CHANGE: 1. Getting stronger psychologically, mentally before physically (mental training): Mental and psychological training is based on working on strengthening our sense of self worth and on our confidence in our abilities.

38 IDENTITY

What you need to do every day is train your mind to think positively about yourself and your worth as a person. Tell yourself you are capable and undefeatable. Talk to yourself about her strengths, acknowledge her weaknesses and be at peace with both.

2. Acknowledge where you are before you decide to make a change: First you must realize the point you are starting from, physically and emotionally. See a psychologist to speak about your fears, your desire for change, your weaknesses, and most importantly, how you see yourself at this point in your life. Practice meditation every morning for a peaceful mind and soul before you start your day. 3. Be certain (the will and grit for real change): Make a promise to always love and care for yourself. Be certain of your will to change and live a healthier lifestyle. Never let go of that will. Never break that promise. That is grit! Keep a journal and write everything you do in your day. Reflect positively on your actions (embrace the faults before your defaults) and set your plan for change. 4. Get excited and at the same time focused: To start anything we must get excited for it to succeed, keeping in mind how to stay motivated all the way. It’s not about how to start; it’s about how to keep going. Focus on your plan and your goal whenever it gets tough. Use a planner or an application to record your exercise, food intake, personal measurements and of course your progress; whether positive or negative it doesn’t matter. Keeping records of every single aspect and detail helps with the process of trial and error. Don’t freak out if you hit a wall or a decline even. Remember it’s all part of the journey. 5. Set realistic goals: Take baby steps to reach your big goal. Set smaller goals first and make a plan to reach them in order to reach your main goal eventually. Again you need a record for this step. Use your planner, notebook or application to track your progress. Each goal has a different plan in this record and all of them put together serve the main goal in the end. 6. Make substitutes: Sometimes we freak out at the amount of things we need to change in our daily habits in order to reach

our goal. The trick is, don’t change everything at the same time and when you make a change look for another healthy habit to replace it. For example: Substitute sugar with natural sweeteners. If you love pickles, switch to olives. If you love fried food, try to roast in the oven and see how it goes. 7. Commitment and determination: What helps us commit is, loving what we do and loving the process of self-care. So you need to first believe that you deserve good treatment and accept nothing less. Exercise because it’s enjoyable and fun. Eat well because you love food. Who says eat to live anyway! Enjoy your diet and enjoy how certain foods make us stronger and more capable. Find the right partner or group to exercise with; this will encourage you even more. You won’t just commit to yourself but to your group as well which will give you a push on the days when you can’t push yourself. 8. Give yourself time and time again: Good things happen for those who wait. We don’t mean to say that you sit around waiting for change to happen magically. However, in order to change and make this change last, you must be patient. Change takes time so acknowledge that and sink it in. Set a timeline for yourself: Don’t lose track of your progress. If you find yourself committing to your plan and you still have not reached the target in that set time, then you need to adjust the time or the plan or both. So setting a timeline is vital in keeping track of progress.

As a rule of thumb, realizing how emotional and physical healths are strongly inter-related and co-dependent is vital for living a healthier life. Ignoring one and only focusing on the other, or worse focusing on neither, will unfortunately get you nowhere. We must put effort into both. So please as a start, always work on any emotional or psychological issues you face in your everyday lives, hand in hand with your physical health. And never beat yourself up along your journey, and don’t judge yourself in a negative way constantly. Be kind to yourself. Treat her well. If you’re here, then you’re already on the right track to find out how to do that. Embrace the journey. IDENTITY 39

REVIEW

The Laws of Human Nature Decoding The Secrets Behind Our Nature by Amina Moustapha

Known for his books on strategy, power and seduction, the international bestselling American author, Robert Greene, presents us the culmination of his life’s study of power, psychology and history in his newest book ‘The Laws of Human Nature’! In this detailed and expansive guide, Greene mastery seeks to immerse his audience in all aspects of human behaviour. He claims that studying these laws will transform the reader into a “calmer and more strategic observer,” immune to “emotional drama.” He has the right to claim that! In each chapter, Greene describes the benefits of confronting and overcoming a different form of human fallibility. He dives into historic examples ranging from Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others to help the reader understand why people do what they do. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, ‘The Laws of Human Nature’ offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense. Here are the tools the book offers you. How to figure out why people do what they do That’s the main idea behind the book, Greene delves into how our emotional and intellectual mechanisms work together and sustain each other. He explains how some of the times they cannot be separated at all, how in many cases a decision based on emotion or intuition may be much more efficient, and indeed better, than a decision arrived at after thorough and rigorous analysis of all the possible outcomes and implications. His guide will help you solve out a lot of what’s going on inside your own head, which will lead you to figure out what’s in other people’s heads.

40 IDENTITY

How to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control Emotional self-control is our ability to keep disruptive emotions and impulses in check and maintain control over our actions. Each and every one of the so-called negative or limiting emotions that we experience on a daily basis can actually serve us and provide us with the necessary guidance we need to make more effective decisions throughout the day. The key in Greene’s book is to detach yourself from them, to disarm these emotions, so you must be armed with self-control, to take the reins. Gaining that expertise requires work and practice, and that’s where the guidance will help you. How to develop the empathy that leads to insights Empathy can lead to profound insights in Greene’s opinion! He describes it as the ability to understand another person’s perspective, even when that perspective is quite different from your own. According to him, empathy in the hierarchy of human experiences is a higher order emotion. In order to develop it, you must have your survival needs met first. People are inherently driven toward needing to know they are okay and that they fit in, before they start to think about others. So without this first step, you can’t achieve empathy. How to look behind people’s masks The most crucial tool that the book provides. But Greene pauses a much crucial question, are we brave enough to look behind people’s masks? Are we strong enough to see the people we love for who they really are? Most of us wear a kind of mask, a persona that hides our deepest thoughts and feelings, and presents a polished, controlled face to the world. So before you unmask people around you, you must first get ready to see the truth. And then, step by step, the book will guide you to

Machiavelli has a new rival, and Sun Tzu had better watch his back

THE NEW YORK TIMES

unravel the true selves of the people around you as well as show you how to get your own mask off. How to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose Conformity! That word and what it does to our lives! As Greene describes it, it’s the path of least resistance and most people naturally gravitate toward it and follow it with their thought pattern being: “Hey, everyone else is doing it so I might as well hop on board and not be left out and if it turns

out they’re wrong, at least I’m not alone.” Usually at a very late age, people start to awake from the effect of that poison called conformity, but they would have wasted so much time. Greene will cut it short for you. He will teach you how to resist the powerful social urge to conform, to not take the easy route, because the tuff route is much better, way healthier and leads to a happy life.

If you want to decode the secret behind your nature, and everyone else around you, ‘The Laws of Human Nature’ is the book for you. IDENTITY 41

“I CAN BE”

ZEIN Empowering Children with Art by Elhusseni Fekry

Amidst the trees and calm streets of Degla, Maadi, 13.218 gallery hosted ZEIN’s art event, “I Can Be”. As you get lost in the beautiful scenery surrounding the gallery, you will be welcomed by the storefront, and the warmth will most definitely allure you. One thing we noticed there is that they do not overdo things, upholding a mindset of beauty and simplicity. To our surprise, we found out that the pieces of art in the gallery are created by children ranging from 8 to 14 years old! Identity talked to the brand storyteller Sahar AlArishy, co-founder of ZEIN, and she delightfully answered all of our questions. What is ZEIN? ZEIN is a creative, artistic brand that aims to expose the children of Awlady Orphanage to art.

44 IDENTITY

ZEIN gives the children of Awlady the chance to practice arts and use what they learn to learn about life, arts, and how to become successful. Lamia Hassanein, the founder of ZEIN, created an art gallery for the children in the orphanage to give them the tools that they will later use to create their future Magnus opus. The core function of ZEIN is connecting the children with master artisans to teach them how to craft various types of arts: photography, painting, pottery, batik, and fashion designs. The extent and versatility of the talent is abundant in the exhibits shown. And that is a part and a result of the story behind the name: ZEIN, the quest for creating beauty.

Sahar shared with us how she felt meeting with the kids for the first time. When she saw how much potential they had, she felt like they transformed her and that she had to help these children have the means of shaping their path with art. So, What Is “I Can Be” Really About? “I Can Be” is simple; it is about giving these children the idea that they can be whatever they want whenever they want. Practically speaking, ZEIN applies this principle by empowering the children through “I Can Be” to use and enhance their talents and skills to become whatever their hearts desire. And that is the main aim, to allow them the platform to exercise their destiny. Who Did ZEIN Previously Work with? Sahar told us about the history of the brand. ZEIN registered the help of prominent names in fashion and arts such as Wessa Wassif. The artists working with the children said that one day, these children will be even better than them in this craft: an insight on the range and extent of the talent of these gifted, young people.

How Is “I Can Be” Helping the Children? Besides the appreciation for the talent of the children and the fulfillment of seeing them craft something from scratch with their own hands, all the proceeds from “I Can Be” are transferred to a dedicated bank account that is allocated solely for the purpose of investing in the education of the children of Awlady orphanage. Take the front window of the gallery, the dress you see here is made by the kids in the orphanage who were tutored in fashion designing and art. You can see how much it radiates positivity and the idea that they can create something that is so beautiful is heartwarming. Another aspect of the project is to ensure that the children are not victims, nor turn this whole situation or their situation into a sob story. Quite the contrary, ZEIN’s “I Can Be” aims at empowering them through their talent to deliver the beautiful art we had seen in the gallery. This would allow them to grow and learn about the different aspects of business and arts. Sahar even told us that she regularly coaches the children about life and business to help them gain a better understanding of how they can be their best selves. From what we saw in the amazing premises of ZEIN in 13.218, the talented youngsters of Awlady did more than deliver; they inspired us, showing us that even though tough challenges can be daunting, there is always a way.

In conclusion, ZEIN shows us that venturing through the unexpected will always yield the best of rewards. And that one day, we can all be what we want to be. IDENTITY 45

Christmas Travel

4 Christmas Markets Worth Exploring! by Amina El Ghandour

W

ith the crisp cold of many European cities and towns during December, Christmas markets add this special thrill to the festive season. With their rustic cabins, festive lights, colourful decorations and tasty seasonal snacks, Christmas markets are probably the most charming feature of the season. Christmas markets, that have now become a common feature all over Europe, originated in the German speaking parts of Europe in 1384 and spread throughout European cities and towns taking different forms and features. In this article, Identity explores 4 of the best Christmas markets in Europe that may be worth booking a ticket and flying to see.

48 IDENTITY

YORK CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL, UK While Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland is the most popular Christmas market in the UK, York Christmas market also tops the list. The magical Christmas atmosphere is accentuated by the Victorian stalls selling local produce as well as the traditional season’s specials. Besides the Christmas magic, York is a charming historical city that lies only 2 hours outside of London. Its history goes back to Roman times as it was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. In the Middles Ages, it became a major wool trading centre and the boost in wealth translated in its rich architecture, namely the York Minster the city’s cathedral and one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. The Yorkshire Museum that brings together the layers of this city’s history exhibiting Roman, Viking and Medieval artefacts, is a must see.

ZAGREB, CROATIA

NUREMBERG, GERMANY Since Christmas markets started in Germany, we had to include a German city in our list. Nuremberg is an old town that stands with long history that is tangible in its charming streets and medieval castles and cathedrals. Every year, the town’s Christmas market is set in the charming Main Square and retains a tradition that goes back to at least 1628. Most of the wares sold are handmade or manufactured locally and even the 180 stalls are still made of regional spruce, some of which are from the 1890s. The gingerbread (lebkunchen) was invented in the region in the 13th century and Nuremberg became the most famous exporter of the Nurnberger Lebukuchen, not to mention its world renowned sausages, the “Original Nuremberger” and its signature prune man and Christkind tradition. Head to the 14th century Gothic Church of Our Lady and enjoy a spectacular view of the market that appears like a fairytale that visits the city every year. When you are there, visit Hauptmarkt (Central Square) which hosts the exquisite gilded fountain Schoner Brunnen and the Kaiserburg Castle. If you have more time to explore, well – this city has more than 30 museums!

Croatia is progressively becoming a touristic destination attracting visitors from all over the world. With its long strip on the Adriatic, its Pannonian plains in the north and its central mountain belt; Croatia offers visitors an outstanding nature. With the wake of attention to new travel destinations like Croatia, Christmas became a season to visit and the Zagrab Christmas market is slowly making its way to the top list of Christmas markets in Europe. Ban Josip Jelačić Square – the huge main square sparkles brightly with music and concerts on an open air stage, food marquees and children’s activities. There’s a huge Christmas tree, the fountain is transformed into a light display and there is a cosy, heated, covered conservatory serving food and drinks.

STRASBOURG, FRANCE Strasbourg offers the oldest and most visited “Marché de Noël” in France, dating back to the 16th century. The charm of this spectacular Christmas market with its 300 stalls - which makes it one of the largest markets in Europe - is accentuated by the medieval setting of the town and the Place de la Cathédrale (the Gothic cathedral in the middle of market). It may be one of the best Christmas markets in Europe but the historical city offers more than the Christmas cheers to its visitors. Top sightings in Strasbourg include the Cathedrale Notre Dame, the Palais Rohan, the Grand Ile and the museum de L’OEuvre Notre Dame.

Chefs United Brunch Brings Global Cuisines to the Table at Heliopolis Towers Hotel If there is a way to understand a culture, it is not through the history books, it is through their food; yes food. Food is a universal language that we all speak – and this is why Heliopolis Towers Hotel introduced a new concept of brunch, “Chefs United Brunch.” We had the chance to attend the opening of the new concept. Since the opening had to be special, it was brought by Cairo’s finest wine brand “Cheers.” The “Chefs United Brunch” took place at Aqua E-Luce restaurant and brought the world’s most exquisite dishes to one table in a unique event. The country’s most exclusive business influential figures, celebrities, and food enthusiasts, to demonstrate the admirable passion behind the cuisine, attended the event. As soon as we arrived, Aqua E-Luce’s friendly staff greeted us and offered a variety of drinks that made us want to take the whole tray and run. But since we are responsible adults, we opted for one of Cheers’ wines and took a tour around the place to see what’s really going on. Now for the most important part of the event – the food – it was every foodie’s dream come true. The chefs surprised attendees with a fusion of myriad tastes from all over the world. We truly felt like we traveled around the world in just a few bites. Where did we go during the event? We started with a trip through Asian cuisine with some

mouthwatering Thai food. We then were taken to another Asian cuisine with some of India’s best street food style that did not make us regret the food we ate later. If that is not an accomplishment, we do not know what is. We then left to Mexico with some of the best tacos we have had in our lives – and trust us, we’ve had lots of tacos before. Jumping to another continent, there was the French corner, where we felt classy and sipped through our wine like the fancy people we think we are. And since we’re Arabs, we like our Arabic food, and Heliopolis Towers Hotel did not disappoint! The Lebanese corner met us with the Middle Eastern food we love – grilled food with a lot of rice and all the seasoning our moms use! Going from tacos to sushi, to traditional grilled Lebanese dishes to combinations of salads; the mix between Europe, Asia, and Middle-Eastern traditional plates altogether with the music and the November winter breeze created a general air of happiness and delicious bliss. If you think you missed on all the fun, have no fear; you can still make it to the “Chefs United Brunch” every Friday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Aqua E-Luce restaurant, Heliopolis Towers Hotel. SIGNS

Sagittarius Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

Strengths Curious, optimistic, ambitious, adventurous, enthusiastic, open-minded and honest Weaknesses Restless, impatient, tactless, over-confident, lazy, inconsistent and careless Most Compatible With Aries, Leo, Gemini, Aquarius Love The free-spirited open-minded Sagittarius takes it casually at first, due to their driven need of seeking adventure, fun and diversity. They can fall madly in love but can also fall out of it at a surprising speed.

LOVE COMPATIBILITY ARIES This is an adventurous match that doesn’t know what boredom is. Both share some main characteristics like being curious, active and optimistic. It’s a high potential of a great relationship. TAURUS Since these two couldn’t be more different, it’s either an intense attraction or an intense repulse. Tension comes from the action loving nature of Sagittarius and comfort seeking of Taurus. GEMINI A competition might arise, since both are used to being “the fun sociable one”. Despite that, they both love so passionately and can have an electric relationship. CANCER Common ground can be hard to find with this match. Sensitive Cancer needs security and attention while independent Sagittarius wants freedom.

LIBRA A quick connection takes place here due to the chemistry, the great sense of humour and laughter. They can actually maintain long-term relationships. SCORPIO Aside from being huge fans of honesty, it can be hard for the two signs to overlook each other’s flaws. Free Sagittarius can be annoyed by Scorpio’s need for commitment. SAGITTARIUS This match can be boring for the two Sagittarius involved, no matter how much in common they can have. They tend to be self-absorbed which cannot be good for any relationship. CAPRICORN It can be hard for this pairing to work out, since they have different views and want different things from life. It may work though if they’re not too dependent on each other.

LEO Both are dynamic and energetic with matching views on life and love. The adventurous and sociable nature of these two makes it a delightful fun relationship.

AQUARIUS This pairing makes a great match as partners and friends. Sharing traits like independency and creativity makes it an interestingly successful relationship.

VIRGO They share a mutual admiration and respect for each other. The relationship can be hard when the need of Virgo to have things in order meets the carelessness of the Sagittarius.

PISCES It’s not the best match with these two. Although Sagittarius is impressed by the imaginative and kind Pisces, Sagittarius cannot give them the compassion and care they actually need.
