HOW TO RAISE A WELL-ROUNDED MAN

A

s the saying goes, “being male is a matter of birth. Being a man is a matter of age. But being a gentleman is a matter of choice”. Raising a well rounded emotionally stable man against all kinds of age old societal norms and stereotypes can be a very tedious and daunting task for Egyptian and Middle Eastern parents. Do you pamper him or teach him to take responsibility from a young age; do you allow him to express his feelings freely or do you ask him to ignore them and ‘man up’? Find out all that and more in our spring men’s issue! From men’s grooming tips, fashion advice to easy bloke recipes; it’s all in there! Happy Easter everyone ☺ Rola Kamel

YES, HIS SKIN NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF TOO! by Omnia Essawy

For some reason, even going to the barber’s now has become expensive! So it is time to cut back on some expenses and help him take care of his skin at home. Instead of doing your skincare routine alone, why not make it a shared activity and prepare some DIY skincare recipes for both of you together? Yes, there are some DIY skincare recipes for men, and they’re quite easy too!

FACE SCRUB Face exfoliating is a necessity that guys usually tend to overlook. However, it is very important to scrub once or twice a week to slough away dry and dead skin, leaving the face soft and smooth. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons ground oatmeal. 1/4 teaspoon sea salt. 1 teaspoon water. 1/2 teaspoon olive oil. 1/2 teaspoon honey 12 April 2019

Combine all of these ingredients and stir thoroughly until they form a paste. Slather onto face using fingertips to rub it around gently in circular motions. Rinse with warm (not hot) water, and pat dry.

FACE MOISTURIZER Another essential step that men tend to skip is moisturizing their faces. Then, they complain about feeling extremely dry! This easy-to-make DIY moisturizer will end his suffering and yours. Ingredients: ⅓ cup organic Shea butter. ⅓ cup organic virgin coconut oil ¼ cup organic almond oil 5 – 7 drops vetiver essential oil 10 – 15 drops tea tree oil

Melt the Shea butter and coconut oil in a small pan on the stove at low heat. Once they make a liquid mixture, add the almond oil, tea tree oil, and vetiver essential oil. Stir everything together, then pour it into a bowl and leave in the fridge for about an hour. Once the mixture turns solid, whip it with a hand beater until it has the consistency of a paste, and then put it in a small jar. The moisturizer is now ready to be used as needed.

SHAVING CREAM Ingredients: 1/3 cup coconut oil 1/3 cup Shea butter 1/4 cup olive oil Essential oils of your choice

Start by melting the Shea butter and the coconut oil in a pan on low heat. Once melted, pour into a bowl, add the olive oil and stir. Put this mixture in the fridge and leave till it hardens. Once solid again, whip it for as long as it takes for it to turn into a light and creamy paste. Add the essential oils for scent; now it is ready to be used for shaving.

AFTER-SHAVE CREAM Instead of buying an expensive after-shave which ingredients you don’t know, it is easier, cheaper, and safer to just make it at home! Ingredients: 1/8 cup coconut oil. 1/2 cup Shea butter, softened. 2 to 4 drops of essential oil of your choice for fragrance.

Combine these ingredients in a food processor or blender, and keep refrigerated between uses.

BLACKHEAD REMOVAL MASK/SCRUB Men or women, we all struggle with blackheads. However, the answer to this annoying problem couldn’t be any easier. This two-ingredient recipe is proven to do wonders, and in a very short time too! Ingredients: 2 tablespoons baking soda 6 teaspoons freshly squeezed orange juice

Just mix the two ingredients together making a paste. Apply the paste onto your face, let it sit for 10-20 minutes, then gently rinse it off with cold water. To help soothe the skin afterwards, you can tone your face with some rose water.

As different as these recipes could be comparing to their female versions, the basics are pretty much the same. You buy the ingredients, mix them together and have yourself an all-natural easy-on-the-pocket product to use as you wish. Also, when he actually uses these products and sees for himself that they are as good as, if not better than the commercial products, he will finally be able to understand why you spend so much time making up stuff to take care of your skin, not only that, he will want you to do the same for him! SPRING 2019

Fashion Trends For Him by Omnia Essawy

Spring is nearing and we’re excited to finally welcome the cool April breeze. However, when it comes to spring outfits, it could be a bit of a challenge to find the perfect one. And when it comes to men’s outfits, the challenge is even bigger. But fear not, we got your back. Here are the 2019 fashion trends that will take his look from basic to BOOM!

PLAID PANTS It is no surprise that plaid has been sneaking its way back into our wardrobes for quite some time now. But word has it that it’s taking over men’s fashion this spring. We have to say, seeing some men rocking edgy plaid pants will be quite refreshing compared to the tired old khakis they seem to feel too comfortable in.

NECK SCARVES Neck scarves are the perfect accessory for the cool spring weather. It keeps you warm and sprout up your entire outfit without too much work. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Thank God it is back in, ha! 18 April 2019

MISMATCHED PRINTS It is not the norm for most men to take big fashion risks. But one of this year’s main trends will probably force them to. Combining between more than one print in the same outfit is taking over this spring. He will need your help with this one, so try to ease him in one print at a time until he is ready to go full out.

CORDUROY PANTS Corduroy pants are considered one of the cool weather basics. However, they are far from basic. Corduroy pants are quite powerful when it comes to men’s outfits. Match it with any plain old sweater and a flashy pair of shoes and voila, a runway look!

LIGHT-WASH JEANS Jeans are probably the one constant in men’s fashion since we can remember. This year, instead of the tired dark shades men lean towards, lighter shades are highly trending and what a fresh change on the eyes that is!

FORMAL MEN

Style Guide

by Nour Almoghrabi & Mahmoud Aboudeif

Men have always been struggling when it comes to styling and coordinating different colours and patterns of formal wear given the limited choice in their fashion world. Unlike most of the women, men actually prefer repeating their outfits at different occasions and might only make slight changes in certain pieces, as answering the question “what to pair with which one?” can be very hard to master! So, we’re here to help you with different options of formal wear. Let our guide show you the way.

MANGO If you’re not a basic-outfit person and want to go for a change, this blue-grey suit is for you! Plus, spring has finally arrived and the sun is finally coming out, so dark suits seem less wearable. We recommend that you go for a striped tie with this outfit, it will definitely stand out. And to make sure you pull off the look properly, you must style it with a white shirt and a bold tie that has a darker colour than the suit. Lastly, brown tuxedo shoes will add the final touch.

20 April 2019

HUGO BOSS Sometimes it gets a bit windy during this time of year; all you need is an elegant piece to add over your suit. A Brown Trench Coat can rock the whole outfit as you’ll get to mix up the traditional formal outfit. But if you choose to wear the trench coat over a three-piece suit, you need to make sure it will be able to fit over the suit comfortably and that you can easily move your arms without any tightness.

ZARA Want to go for a chic, sophisticated formal look? This black tuxedo suit from Zara will keep you looking your stylish best. It must be a part of every man’s wardrobe. To complete the look, all you need is black-leather or tuxedo shoes. This can be easily worn without stressing over styling or coordinating different colours. Sometimes simplicity wins.

CASUAL IS THE NEW CHIC! by Omnia Essawy & Mahmoud Aboudeif

It is that time of the year again; it is spring! We all love springtime; flowers are blooming again, we are excited to say goodbye to the gloomy winter blues, and ready to welcome the summer with open arms. However, the problem always remains; what to wear? The weather is not hot, nor cold. So how does one find the right casual outfit for everyday outings in this weather and maintain a truly stylish look? Not to worry though, we got your back!

Zara We all know that yellow is back in the game this year and strong too! Some men might hesitate before trying to make yellow work in their outfits. But this comfy Zara outfit will help make up their minds. It mixes the elegance of black with the colorfulness of the yellow and blue, making the perfect outfit for a night out with friends or an afternoon occasion. 22 April 2019

H&M Not into boring black suits? Have to dress up but want something to still capture that young wild soul? Look no further! This H&M grey and pink ensemble will do just the trick for you. It is elegant yet fun, colourful yet classy, and simple yet edgy. In other words; perfect.

Bershka

To most men, comfort is the most essential thing about an outfit! However, a huge misconception people tend to make is think that comfort contradicts style! This outfit proves that you can be so comfortable yet still look stylish! Pairing the printed sweatshirt with light blue jeans will add a stylish boost to the midseason look we all dread.

Pull & Bear When in doubt, it is always better to just go simple. Simplicity is the key to elegance. This Pull&Bear casual outfit captures the essence of a truly free-spirited spring. Also, it is so easy to master this simple look. All is needed is a simple light shirt, simple blue jeans and sports shoes, and you are good to go!

KEEP IT LEATHERY, KEEP IT CLASSY! by Omnia Essawy & Mahmoud Aboudeif

There is no doubt that women have it easier than men when it comes to accessorizing. However, a little touch goes a long way with men’s outfits. And if this touch is one of leather, the entire outfit is guaranteed to be elevated to a whole new level of CLASSY. So here is your guide to all the leather accessories, more like necessities you need to class up your outfit:

BAGS: Bags are not just for women anymore. Whether a man, a woman or a child; you need a bag, it is not just an accessory, it’s a necessity! These Zara bags are as practical as they are handsome. They will make it easier for any busy working man on the go to maintain his classy look all day long. 24 April 2019

BELTS: Whether a belt or a pair of corky suspenders –which are, in fact, back in fashion- a good belt can spruce up your entire outfit and take it from boring to downright fun! The colour, the style and the contrast between the belt and the rest of the outfit have what can almost be called a superpower over a man’s overall look. As proven by these trendy looking H&M belts and suspenders.

WALLETS: While wallets are not exactly considered accessories, most men disregard the fact that wallets do make a difference in their overall look. Therefore, they only care about the size of the wallet, and completely ignore its look. Big mistake! Because even though the wallet is mostly kept inside the pocket, a man’s wallet does say a lot about him. So if you want it to send the right message about your personality, go with a trendy unique looking wallet like these wallets from Pull&Bear.

SHOES: Fun fact: classic shoes can still be edgy and different, as beautifully proven here by this pair from Massimo Dutti. If you are giving up the sneakers, you can still keep your edge with a pair of classy yet sexy leather shoes. Yes, it makes a difference. No, classic doesn’t have to be boring.

A man might not like to accessorize, but there is no reason why the items he is going to wear anyway can’t be stylish and trendy. This could just make his final look even better than it would have been if he had actually accessorized. April 2019 25

THE MOST STYLISH

Men of All Time by Amina Moustapha

There is a subtle yet crucial difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what’s trending right now, but style is classic. We can all agree that when it comes to style some men in the world have a knack for simply getting it right! So sit back, relax and take a few notes.

YVES SAINT LAUREN “Fashion fades, style is eternal” Yves Saint Laurent once said, and he was the living proof of his own saying. He was arguably the most famous and celebrated mid-century fashion designer in the world. When it came to his wardrobe; he was sharp, elegant and unforgettable.

SEAN CONNERY You can’t think of style without having James Bond crossing your mind, and who is the man who launched this legendary role and set the tone for the whole franchise? It’s Mr. Connery! Even at ease, he still looks suave and stylish.

28 April 2019

DAVID BECKHAM David Beckham’s status as one of the world’s most stylish athletes can never be questioned. From hip hop to hipster to haute couture, Beckham shows that he can pull off pretty much whatever sartorial choices that come his way.

RYAN GOSLING Ladies may love Ryan Gosling for his good looks, but gents admire him for his impressive fashion sense. As comfortable in a suit as in a pair of jeans and t-shirt, Gosling’s unique style is adaptable to any occasion. Whether walking the streets or the red carpet, the A-list actor always looks on point.

GEORGE CLOONEY Clooney is a style icon. Yes, he has classic Hollywood good looks, talent and all that, but he has a personal style that is very much his own. It is classic, but not stuffy. It is simple, but not boring. And it is a way of dressing we wish many men would embrace!

RAMI MALEK Malek isn’t just one to watch on the big screen. His red carpet game is just as strong, and he also masters the smart casual looks. Much like the style of Freddie Mercury, who he starred as in Bohemian Rhapsody this year, Rami Malik never looks dull.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO ACTING? Since I was just a little child, I was besotted with TV series. Yes, I did love to watch cartoon series too, but my passion for actual drama series was something else. I used to watch El Shahd w El Domou’, Gom’aa El Shawal, Abnae’y Al Aeza’a Shokran… It is quite common for kids to watch animated series, but to be drawn to watching heavy drama series like these, that I think was a bit uncommon, but that’s how it was for me. I used to write down scenes from these episodes, or record them on a cassette, and rehearse them with my siblings. We would each pick a role, learn their lines by heart, and then we would record the scene with our voices. I believe this is when my love toward acting started growing. Few years later, when I was in middle school, I joined the school theater. I used to love to imitate people, especially my teachers, which once got me expelled for a week because a teacher got really upset from me imitating him. Despite all that, I wasn’t completely aware of my love toward acting.I also love football a lot, so I used to join sporting clubs to train until one day I made it to Al Ahly. I love to hunt and ride horses, so I would pursue these hobbies too but I was never mindful to my great passion for performing until I grew up. When I did, I figured I had to seek a career in it. HOW DO YOU PICK YOUR ROLES? I am very picky with my roles. I would never go with roles that I think are not challenging or have been played by someone else before, because I believe that there is always something new to present, something different, creativity knows no limit. Life is full of people, so it’s is full of characters, with different features and different traits. I tend to pick what’s new and challenging, and when I’m done with a role I must free myself from all its characteristics in order to make space for a new one, that’s why I never like to play similar characters. The story itself plays a major factor to whether I accept a role or not. The project must be rich, catchy and fascinating, because if it managed to attract me, then I will be able to find elements in it to attract the audience to it too. In addition, the director,

the person I am going to lean on, whom I consider like a compass in a vast wide land, without it you wouldn’t know which direction to go, must be someone I agree with their vision. Finally, the other actors in the project, I love to act alongside strong performers, talents spice up any project. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROLE SO FAR, AND WHY? There is more than one; I love my character Hussein Aly Haroun Shehata in Al Gama’a, even though I only played it for one scene, but it was the first time for me to work with Wahid Hamed, and it got a lot of praise. I also love my character Seliman in Al Maslaha; it was challenging to play a guy from Sinai, to master his accent and to reflect him with his complicated features. I love Ragab El Farkh, in Bedoun Zekr Asma’a; it was my first time to work with director Tamer Mohsen. Most of the important roles I played were with him. It goes without saying that I love my role as Aly El Rouby in Taht El Saytara; the series was a big hit, and thankfully the audience loved it and loved the relationship between Aly and Hania with all its ups and downs, it was also my first time to act with Nelly Karim. I love Sony in Haza Al Masa’a with his darkness, Ahmed El Far in Ot w Far with his quirkiness, and finally Aly Bahr in Aho Da El Sar because of the challenge of playing him from his twenties to his eighties. WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH? I would love to work with anyone who loves what they do, because I do have a passion toward my work, and working with someone who shares this love will always make the experience much more enjoyable. I am now preparing for a role in King Lear play with Yehia El Fakharani; I love this man, on both the personal and professional levels, he worships his work and that’s why going to rehearsals every day makes me so happy. There are certain actors that I wish I had the chance to work with but sadly they left us, such as the incredible Ahmed Zaky, the phenomenal Khaled Saleh, and the exquisite Mahmoud Abd El Aziz, may all of their precious souls rest in eternal peace.

April 2019 33

I like to play new and challenging characters. I believe that there is always something new to present, something different, creativity knows no limit.

The main factor is how devoted everyone involved in this series was. Devotion can make wonders happen. Screenwriter Abd El Rehim Gamal showed his devotion by presenting us with a very rich script, director Hatem Aly showed his devotion by executing the project masterfully, all the actors in the series showed their devotion by acing their performances. Everyone in the location believed in the project; that’s why it was a huge success. The project isn’t similar to anything we have watched before, that’s why it captured the audience and made them eager to know what will happen next. Finally, I believe the timing of its airing was perfect, even though we were all sad that it didn’t get to air last Ramadan, I think that the delay played in our favour. As for my character, I think with all the deaths that happened in the last episode, the writer wanted to end Aly’s storyline on a happy note, that he got married to Asdaf, and that life went on. I think it was nice to not see the end of his journey.

AHO DAH ELI SAR WAS A MAJOR SUCCESS, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE FACTORS BEHIND ITS SUCCESS, AND WHY DIDN’T WE GET TO SEE THE FATE OF YOUR CHARACTER, ALI BAHR?

TELL US MORE ABOUT KABIL, YOUR NEXT PROJECT THIS RAMADAN… Kabil is a TV series, a suspense thriller, written by Mostafa Sakr, Mohamed Ezz and Karim Youssef, directed by Karim El Shenawy and starring Mohamed Mamdouh, Amina Khalil and me. Alongside us there is Aly El Tayeb, Passent Shawki and Noha Abdin. As you can see the project is created from A to Z by young people; it is surrounded with a youthful fresh energy. I am thrilled to work with both Mamdouh and Amina; Mamdouh and I are friends for over 15 years, since we used to act together at the college theater, but we never got to work together until now, and I more than love Amina, she is a tremendous actress. I am so excited for the project. WHEN WILL EL-MAMAR BE OUT IN THEATERS? Next June, right after Ramadan and during Eid El Fetr. I hope you will all love it, and that it will honour our heroes of the 1967 War, the War of Attrition, and the 1973 War. I am proud to be part of this project. The movie is written and directed by Sherif Arafa, who is more than brilliant and I always dreamed to work with him.

We thank Farrag for such an inspiring interview and we wish him all the best in his next projects.

IDENTITY ADVICE

CRACKING THE CODE OF MEN’S FEELINGS by Marwa Rakha

“Big boys don’t cry”, “Take it like a man”..... We all grew up, men and women, believing that men are a feelingless gender. Boys are sissies if they show fear, pain or heaven forbid the most-taboo expression of all: crying! Men grow up aligning themselves with those norms in order to fit in. They fear if they show a more vulnerable side, it will overshadow their other masculine traits. 36 April 2019

When it comes to relationships, feelings are the very thing that create closeness and connection, and achieve a deeper intimacy. When a man doesn’t share his feelings with his partner, this can have a dramatic impact on the relationship quality and lead to all sorts of confusion and conflict. We reached out to our Relationship Expert, Marwa Rakha, to help us crack the code of men’s feelings. 1. Putting norms and society beliefs aside, is it true that men and women process emotions differently? Emotions are emotions; take a baby, for example, when a baby is hungry, he/she cries. When a toddler is sad, he/she cries. When a child is scared, he/she cries. Also, when they are happy, excited, or surprised, they express their feelings. Just looking at children assures us that they were born with the ability to experience and express the same set of feelings. After birth, parents start dictating the differences between girls and boys; pink for girls and blue for boys, houses and dolls for girls, cars and Meccano for boys, long hair, dresses, earrings are for girls, short hair and checkered shirts are for boys, tears are for girls and boys should just bite their lips. This early conditioning teaches boys to deny their true feelings and desires; deny the desire to become a hairdresser, a chef, a tailor, a nurse, or a stay-athome dad. They are also forced to deny emotional and physical pain. It gets worse when boys get denied the hugs, kisses, and loving physical contact that girls are allowed. Then they are forbidden to kiss, caress, or stay in the arms of their mothers – even as young as 6, 7, or 9. By the time that boy is a pre-teen, or a teen, he has already mastered denying his emotional and physical needs of love and intimacy. He puts on the “rough machine” mask every morning and faces the world. By the time he is in his twenties or thirties, he no longer needs to put on the mask – the mask becomes him, and he becomes the mask. The worst part is yet to come! Girls grow up absorbing all of the above; hence, as they are growing up, they

make fun of, shun, reject, and friend-zone any boy/ guy who is expressive, communicative, gentle, loving, and has no issues with crying. As for processing emotions, male and female brains truly work differently but it is not a Mars or Venus type of thing; it is more of a wide spectrum of different shades of masculinity and femininity that are available for both men and women – we all have masculine and feminine sides. One’s position on the spectrum also changes over time; a woman can start off on the very feminine side, and over time and with experience, her masculine side takes over – thus leaving her in a different position on the spectrum. 2. How important is sharing emotions in a relationship? Can the lack of it doom a relationship? Ideally speaking, the answer to this question is: Yes, sharing emotions is crucial to the success of a relationship. Realistically speaking, some women are not ready to deal with a man who could eloquently and elaborately express his feeling. They find him boring, womanly, and, in a way, less masculine. Other women are starved for mutual communication of affection; they are deprived of deep meaningful conversations. These women suffer anxiety attacks, depression phases and sexual frustration. The men and women in both types of relations mentioned above, are unhappy. They are a misfit. The only way to avoid such miserable relationships is to choose the right partner from the beginning. Choose the partner you feel connected to the most. Choose the level of communication and expression that you are both comfortable with. Choose the person that brings out the best in you. 3. How to help a man show and express his emotions? If a man is ever to let his guard down, take off his “rough machine” mask, and express his emotions, he needs to feel secure and safe. This can never happen with a judgmental woman, in a relationship plagued with power struggles, or at a time when the man is not ready for reconnecting with his feminine side.

HOW TO RAISE A WELL-ROUNDED MAN IN 6 EASY STEPS by Salma Elfeqy & Omnia Essawy

Raising kids is one of most the challenging yet most rewarding things that a human being can do. The incredibly big responsibility the crucial task of bringing up a person entails often represents a huge burden on the shoulders of the parents.

you and hiding things from you so he can do what he pleases, which could have extremely dangerous percussions. You have to learn to give him his space, so he can learn to make a mistake and recover from it, and eventually develop his own personality and grow up to be an independent strong man.

It is either you raise children that will make you proud every step of the way and truly leave a mark and make an impact on society, or you raise kids that will make your life a living hell and leave you with an endless sense of failure.

3. TEACH HIM THAT BEING VULNERABLE IS A SIGN OF STRENGTH Unfortunately, one of the biggest misconceptions about men in our society is that a man has to be an emotionless robot and that any sign of vulnerability in a man is considered a sign of weakness. This, of course, places a huge pressure on your son to fit that unfair illogical mold that society made for him, so he grows up to be mentally unstable and incapable of communicating with his own feelings. It is your role to teach him, as a child, that it takes courage and strength to show his emotions and express his thoughts and feelings. This way he will eventually grow into a man who is in tune with his inner-self and more accepting of himself and, in turn, of others.

There is no denying it, raising a child is not something to be taken lightly. The smallest move can make or break your child’s entire future! And when it comes to raising a boy in a country like Egypt, the challenge of bringing him up to be a well-rounded mentally stable man could be extra difficult. This is why we are offering our help and presenting you with 6 short steps to guide you through this dire process. 1. STOP SPOILING HIM It is time you broke that previously conceived idea that men should be waited on hand and foot. Sure everything you do that is considered spoiling, you do out of love. However, in the future, that will result in your son growing up to be a demanding man that always expects people to do everything for him. Therefore, he won’t be a helpful brother, co-operative husband or a very good father. It all starts with you; you have to teach him to carry his own weight in the world from a young age so he can grow up knowing how to handle responsibility.

4. TEACH HIM THE IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS All the glitz and glamour of pop culture has made our children think that in order to be one of the ‘cool kids’, you have to break every rule there is and give up on your code of ethics. At a young age, they can’t see the bigger picture or identify what’s truly important and what is not. So, it is your responsibility to plant the seeds of ethics and morals in him from an early stage, so when he grows up, he can recognize that being ethical is one of the main pillars of making a great man.

2. STOP BEING OVERPROTECTIVE Sure, you fear for your son because you love him. However, being overprotective of your son will result in one of two things. Either he will grow up to be an unconfident shaky momma’s boy who can’t handle anything on his own, or he will resort to lying to

5. TEACH HIM THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECTING WOMEN Many males in our society always feel like they are superior to any female figure; whether this woman is their mom, sister, friend or even significant other. It is very important for you as a parent to teach your

38 April 2019

children that women are men’s equals, and that respecting women is an obligation, not a luxury. This can only happen if you lead by example. If he grew up in a house where women are respected and appreciated, he will carry that with him into the world and in his own house one day. 6. TRY TO BE HIS FRIEND Whether we like to admit or not, children trust their friends more than their parents, probably because they find it easier to confine in them and talk freely without fear of punishment. So, to do a better job as a

parent, you have to become their friend. If you earned your son’s trust as his friend, he will find it easier to open up to you fully believing that you will understand him and give him the best advice because you only want what’s best for him.

Of course, there are so many other things to take into consideration and that can be added to this list. The most important thing to remember though is that raising a child is already a challenging task, but raising a well-rounded man is a totally different and more difficult one. However, possible. IDENTITY MASCULINITY REBORN

The Promises All Men Break by Amina Moustapha

It’s not the fake promises that hurt us the most, it’s the broken promises. Yes, there is a difference. A fake promise is when someone vows something, while being fully aware that they can’t keep this promise. So they are liars, we are better off without them. A broken promise is not always intentional; they’re not aware they’re promising what they can’t give. They get blinded by love. They do and say whatever it takes to ensnare their beloved, and they believe that they will fulfill these promises. So when the “love drug” euphoria wears off, we are left with the broken promises, and it stings stronger than a hundred fake promises, because it comes from someone who truly loves you. Someone we were certain will never cause us any pain. We were wrong.

Relationships follow a path of evolution and growth, which requires both of you to change. You’re copiloting one life. It’s not a solo ride anymore. In order for your plane not to crash, both of you must be flexible about changing, while still being true to your own needs and limitations.

When it comes to relationships, men break promises, not because they are bad people, not because they are liars, quite the contrary it’s because they are in love and they shouldn’t have promised them in the first place. They are not the only ones to blame here; some promises shouldn’t be expected to be promised in the first place. So stop waiting on their fulfillment.

BROKEN PROMISE #4 THAT YOU WILL NEVER FIGHT TOGETHER

BROKEN PROMISE #1 THAT HE WILL NEVER HURT YOU He will, and not because he doesn’t love you, but because he is human, and so are you. Humans hurt, get hurt and heal. He is not going to always be thoughtful, caring or responsible and all those great things. He wouldn’t help it but hurt you with his imperfection every now and then. So will you. BROKEN PROMISE #2 THAT HE WILL NEVER WANT TO CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOU He will very much want to do that, because there is nothing in life that can or should stay the same. 40 April 2019

BROKEN PROMISE #3 THAT HE WILL NEVER LOOK AT ANOTHER GIRL Love doesn’t mean you see no one else but the person you love (That’s what going partially blind means!); it means you choose this person every time and no matter what. It means even though there are people who are much more attractive, prettier, smarter... he still wants his person. His woman. You.

You will. Life is loaded with everyday challenges, and it’s the byproduct of building a future together. So you work at it. Fight for the worthy things. Take the high road when you would rather just prove that you’re right. Love is not about not having problems. It’s about seeing them, understanding them, and forging ahead despite them. Also fighting is a healthy way to release stuffed emotions; otherwise you two will drift apart without even knowing why. BROKEN PROMISE #5 THAT HE WILL ALWAYS LIKE YOU Sounds weird to break this one, right? One of the most brilliant lines ever written in books was in ‘One Day’, when Emma said to Dexter (the man she loved) “I love you, Dex, but I don’t like you anymore.” Throughout life we will change, and not everything about us will change to the best. Our partners will still love us though they don’t like the change, and will also be there for us until we solve out what’s wrong with us.

We must not promise what we ought not, lest we be called on to perform what we cannot.

- ABRAHAM LINCOLN

BROKEN PROMISE #6 THAT HE WILL NEVER MESS UP

BROKEN PROMISE #7 THAT HIS LOVE WILL NEVER CHANGE

Oh, he very much will. So will you. Again we are humans. We make mistakes. No promise can keep him from messing up, from saying the wrong words, or forgetting an important day, or being stubborn for no reasons, or getting caught up in work.... Our lives will always be full of endless messes, but it doesn’t matter. What should matter is that he admits that he messed up, and tries to do better. So should you.

You should make it a point that he breaks this promise to you! Why would you want him to always love you the same way he does now? You should want his love to grow as you both grow together, to mature as your relationship matures, to get stronger with every challenge that will get thrown in your path together, because that’s what love really is, a journey, not a destination.

Words mean something. So don’t go on promising what you can’t give, guys. Just stay honest. That’s the promise we need. April 2019 41

How Toxic Masculinity

Hurts Us All by Amina Moustapha

One of the most complex and serious toxicities known to man is Thallium. It is colourless, odorless and tasteless; its slow-acting, painful and wide-ranging symptoms are often suggestive of a host of other illnesses and conditions. The person wouldn’t know he is being poisoned until it is too late, and sometimes they wouldn’t even understand what killed them. 42 April 2019

In the 1980s, when psychologist Shepherd Bliss sought to separate the negative traits of men from the positive traits, he used the term “toxic masculinity” as a means of making the distinction. That was the first time the world ever heard this term. Bliss defined toxic masculinity as what can come of teaching boys that they can’t express emotions openly; that they have to be “tough all the time”; that anything other than that makes them “feminine” or weak. Once these notions get into a boy’s head, without him knowing they will intoxicate his mind, his thoughts and his attitude. He wouldn’t even know his life is being plagued, just like the effect of Thallium.

CAN TOXIC MASCULINITY BE CURED? It is important to not see men intoxicated with this notion as the enemy, because at some point they were the victim, and now they are simply trapped in their own beliefs. They are caught in a cycle of depression. It is also important to know that it is never too late to unlearn such behaviors once a person can identify them, once he knows better. So, yes. Toxic masculinity can be cured, but in order for that to happen men should start to take action, they must revolt against it. They must admit they have a problem.

With the #MeToo movement putting a crossindustry spotlight on toxic masculinity, the term toxic masculinity has well and truly taken root in the public consciousness and got people talking in 2018, and until now. WHAT IS TOXIC MASCULINITY? It is quite crucial to understand here that this term is designed to describe not masculinity itself, but a form of gendered behavior that results when expectations of “what it means to be a man” go wrong. Discussing toxic masculinity is not saying men are bad or evil, and the term is NOT an assertion that men are naturally violent. The traits that Shepherd Bliss defined as being “toxic” to masculinity are “avoidance of emotional expression”, the “over-aspiration for physical, sexual and intellectual dominance”, “extreme self-reliance” and the “systematic devaluation of women’s opinions, body and sense of self.” HOW TOXIC MASCULINITY HURTS MEN Imagine being a young boy, crying over a painful injury or an emotional heartbreak that feels like the end of the world, and then being told to “man up,” and asked “are you a girl or what?” instead of being gently asked what’s making you cry, how you feel about it, and what you think you can do about it. When feelings and emotions are dismissed and gender-defining thinking is heard repeatedly, a young person learns to avoid expressing their real feelings and begins to bottle up sadness. Over time, such behavior can lead to a dysfunctional emotional expression and ultimately, depression.

That’s the hardest step, acknowledging the existence of a problem. The antidote to toxic masculinity is within men; this toxicity is a social conditioning. It is not just ‘the way men are’, admitting the problem is the first step into curing it. It may challenge their own sense of identity and social acceptance, but it will bring them the opportunity for deeper, healthier relationships with themselves, their partners and their communities. They must learn the effect of toxic masculinity. It is crucial for them to learn about what toxic masculinity is and how our culture reinforces it. To listen to women on how this behavior has harmed them. To be open to change and to know that while all that may make them feel bad or defensive, the problem originates in our culture broadly, and now they have the power to fix the problem. They must encourage positive manhood. Everyone, men and women should encourage men to be their true selves, instead of being confined to stereotypes. We must encourage men to demonstrate nurturing, compassion, and caring behavior toward themselves and others. Create openings for men to share their experiences and feelings, especially if you sense there’s a problem. Positive masculinity means being able to let out and embrace all aspects of masculinity in a balanced way.

By giving up harmful notions of masculinity, we stand to gain something deeply human and profound, far better than any superficial privilege. Let’s all increase intimacy, community, and healthier relationships with our loved ones and ourselves. April 2019 43

IDENTITY HEALTH

MEET THE EGYPTIAN PRIDE

Ali Farag

by Aya Aboshady

And the Egyptian pride is literally raining on us! Ali Amr Farag, aka ‘Mr. Fantastic’, is a 27 year old Egyptian professional squash player who graduated from Harvard University in 2014, with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. Farag is currently World No.1, World Squash Champion and the best PSA Player. The 27 year old is also married to another champion, Egyptian squash professional and the current Women’s World No.3, Nour El Tayeb. We sat with the champion and the rest is history you’re about to read! 44 April 2019

1. How does it feel being World No.1, the current World Squash Champion, and the best PSA Player? I can’t express my happiness in words. It’s any player’s dream to be on top of their respective sport; it’s something I’ll always be proud of. Being World No.1 and current World Squash Champion in the same season is an unparalleled feeling. However, as outstanding as being the best PSA Player is, I would like to keep thinking that I’m not completely there yet in order to continue pushing forward and retain my position for a long time.

2. How do you and your wife Nour El Tayeb juggle being a married couple with responsibilities and world champions at the same time? Some people think being a married couple who are professionals in the same domain is hard; but in fact, it’s a huge blessing. Our life routine is very different and barely anyone would tolerate it unless they see it from the same perspective. Nour and I really get on and support each other on both the professional and emotional levels. I also look up to her, big time. 3. What is your daily workout routine? Basically from Saturdays to Thursdays, I start fitness from 10:00 to 11:30 AM then I eat a light snack. From 12:00 to 1:30 PM, I practice, either solo, with a coach or with another player. After that, I go home, eat lunch, and sleep for an hour. And I usually have a match play four days a week at 7:00 PM with another player; and that’s actually one of the pros of living in Egypt. Here, I have a dozen top and junior players to practice with. Friday is my day off. 4. Which area do you usually focus on strengthening when you exercise? Squash is an all round sport, meaning that I can’t only focus on my arms for example because I use them in playing and ignore my lower body or vice versa. I’m very blessed to work with Derek Ryan, the PSA physio and strength & conditioning specialist; as well as my coach in Egypt, Hossam Shaddad. Together, they put on a full program and I’ve honestly never felt stronger. 5. What’s your dieting plan? I’m not very strict when it comes to diet. I treat myself to deserts every now and then. However, I always make sure that all the important nutrients are included in my meals. For instance, I usually either eat oats and bananas for breakfast or avocado and toast. For lunch, I have to eat carbs, for example: rice or pasta and vegetables, along with any source of protein (chicken, steak, salmon, etc..). Same for dinner. 6. Does frequent traveling and jet lag restrain you from keeping a healthy lifestyle sometimes? Thankfully not anymore, I’m used to it by now since I travel around 12 times a year and I learned to adapt. I no longer struggle as much with the jet lag. But usually, when I’m done with championships, I take a full day off and treat myself to a nice meal, then go back to being healthy.

7. When did you start training? When did you know you wanted to be a professional? Since the age of 6, I grew up watching my father play squash as a hobby. In addition to my brother and role model Wael, who’s two years older and was also practicing the sport. Ever since then, my passion for the game became indescribable. I wanted to play all the time when I was younger, to the point that I cried whenever it was time to go home. However, because my family comes from an academic background, I did not think my passion will reach a professional career until I went to Harvard and continued playing there too, alongside my education. Things basically took off from there. 8. Is squash more of a mental or a physical game? Honestly, any sport is like that. Although squash is extremely physical and all, it’s still definitely a mental game. According to Jahangir Khan, former World No.1, squash is 80% mental and 20% physical. Meaning that if you don’t have the mental toughness of a champion, you’ll hardly ever get there, no matter how fit you are. 9. In your interview with Squash-skills you highlighted the “need to use your physical attributes effectively and negate your opponent’s strengths”; can you elaborate on what that means? This is something I learned from former World No.1 and three times World Champion Nick Matthew. He said that each one should focus on their strength points for them to be super strong, rather than focusing on just bettering their weaknesses. That’s exactly how you outplay your opponent, and for me, it’s my movement skills on the pitch. 10. What is the biggest challenge you faced so far in your professional career? When I was 16, I was having my IGCSE exams while pursuing my World Junior Championship dream and of course, I wasn’t in the best form. Low self esteem hit me hard when players I was not used to losing against, beat me, one after the other. I was let down and almost completely gave up, that’s when my brother interfered and lifted me up. He has been my coach and mentor ever since then. 11. Are there any remarkable moments that you won’t forget? Definitely the US Open 2017, the highlight of my career and my personal breakthrough. It was the first time for me to reach a platinum final, let alone win it. And the fact that Nour won it the same day too was incredibly special. April 2019 45

IDENTITY REVIEW

THE SILENT PATIENT by Rana Ramez

I don’t like the type of books that force me to bury my face between its pages, oblige me to forget about the outer world and make me unable to put it down unless I’m done with it – SAID NO ONE EVER. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is this kind of books. It’s an exciting psychological thriller novel of an act of violence from a famous artist, Alicia Berenson, against her husband, the fashion photographer Gabriel, and the psychotherapist, Theo Faber, obsessed with discovering her story. Here are 7 reasons why The Silent Patient is worth your time. 1. The Debut Thriller of the Season Born in Cyrus to an English mother and a GreekCypriot father, Alex Michaelides studied English literature at University of Cambridge and got a screenwriting MA from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. With a previous screenwriting experience of the film “The Devil You Know” (2013) and cowriting “The Con Is On” (2018), The Silent Patient is surprisingly Alex’s first novel. The author has expressed his satisfaction and enjoyment about writing a novel; it’s where you can go through people’s heads in a way you can’t in movies. 2. Psychotherapy Inspiration Besides his great interest in Agatha Christie books, the main source of inspiration of this novel was the author’s experience of working at a secure psychiatric unit for teenagers, which became a big part of his life. The story starts after finding Alicia’s husband dead with many shots in the head and finding the gun with nothing but her fingertips on it. Our main character was arrested for murdering Gabriel. Since her conviction, she hasn’t spoken a word, that’s why she was housed for 6 years in a secure forensic unit in North London. And here comes the role of our narrator, Theo Faber, who is determined to solve the case. 3. A Rare Worldwide Expansion With a huge wave of international deals for the British screenwriter’s first novel, The Silent Patient is currently selling in more than 25 countries and is translated to more than 15 languages. Alongside with UK and US, The book that is unfolding a dark, shocking and beautifully crafted story has sold to countries in Europe, Asia and Africa and all the way to Latin 46 April 2019

America. These global reactions and sales numbers are considered extraordinary and not to mention, very rare for a debut. As exhilarating and risky as crossing a minefield, the author takes us on a walk through the minds of the novel’s characters. And like a blank canvas, readers will collect the signs in order to gain insights about their psyches. 4. A Complicated Heart-Stopping Plotted Thriller After her current therapists accept to let our story narrator Theo treat Alicia, the line between doctor and patient gets blurry. Theo admits that he became a therapist in the first place because he was a mess, so in the process of treating Alicia and trying to break into her silence, he was seeking to cure his own emotional issues. The complexity of the story is smartly plotted, which may give Michaelides a major position in the field of psychology thriller novels; it’s so confidently sketched that it doesn’t need flashy big twists to keep the reader hooked, only an exceptional one or two. 5. A Masterful Maze Exploration The beauty and uniqueness of The Silent Patient lies not only in the author’s brilliant, methodical and skillful character building and breakdown. Through his story, Alex reveals to his readers the psychology of the characters upon which the book is built, in the same way his protagonist uncovers and exposes the mental state of his patient. What a catchy investigation it is to examine the mind of a criminal rather than investigating the crime itself. 6. Greek Mythology Background Alex Michaelides was steeped in Greek mythology, since he has spent his youth years in Cyprus, which is clear

in The Silent Patient. He was captivated by the myth of Alcestis; the self-sacrifice, the return from death, the subsequent silence, the refusal to explain and the denial of conclusion. Many of these features are clearly spotted in his debut novel. In a previous interview, Alex stated that he always carried this story with himself knowing that one day he was going to use it. 7. A Slow Burning Journey to Truth With a strong psychological focus, The Silent Patient can be reviewed as a character study. The addictive writing style of Alex is immersive and hypnotic; it drags the reader bit by bit into an enigma using the technique of uncovering, layer by layer, the darkest secrets of a mysterious woman, rather than using shocking twists throughout the story. As rewarding as the journey itself, a satisfying breathtaking reveal is promised. Not to mention the talent of the author who draws the

complexity of a character through vivid description of physical appearances instead of verbal communication. 8. A Movie on the Way Since the massive hit of Gone Girl in 2012, countless psychological thrillers have conquered the bookshelves, and very little from these actually qualify as psychological suspense. It’s safe to say that The Silent Patient is one of the most precious few who are giving hope to the desperate fan readers of psychology thrillers. Based on the splendid success of the book, an Oscar winning Production Company has got the film rights of the novel, yet to be revealed, and Alex Michaelides was hired to write the script. The entanglement of the story relying in the multiple timelines, the storytelling mediums and the mind-blowing conclusion are what Oscar-winning movies are made of.

To wrap it up, The Silent Patient is an incredible debut psychological thriller that offers intelligent character building and skillful plotting delivered in a hypnotic style of writing. If jaw-dropping plot twist conclusions are your thing, The Silent Patient will totally satisfy your desire. And the best part here is that it’s not only about being twisty, this is just the cherry on the top. April 2019 47

IDENTITY TRAVEL

Travel Guide: MOROCCO by Rana Ramez

VISA • The cost for a one month single entry visa is 1425 and 1525 EGP for 3 months. It takes up to 15 business days to be issued. • An online application is filled-in with your travel details, copy of the passport and other required documents. • A return ticket is required to get accepted for the visa.

TRANSPORTATION In general, public transportation in Morocco is pretty good. The rail network links the main towns of the north, Marrakech and the coast with plenty of collective taxis and buses. • Trains are the best option for traveling between major cities. They cover a limited network of routes though. • Buses are cheaper than shared taxis. Even 48 April 2019

though they are slower, they are safer and more comfortable. Note that buses run by the national company are more reliable and faster than private services. • With a wide variety of routes and the speed factor, shared taxis are one of the features of the country’s transportation system. The fares are more expensive than buses.

MONEY AND SHOPPING Morocco has a closed currency, which means you can’t get Dirhams from outside the country. You’ll have to wait until you actually get there to get any. • Currency exchange bureaus are available at the airport, in addition to the banks in major cities. • It’s so important to keep cash with you, preferably in small bills, for cabs/services and tipping. • Learn how to bargain while shopping. Due to how touristy Morocco is, prices aren’t cheap, and haggling is just a part of the shopping process there. • You can get at least 25 to 50% discount on the starting prices of the items. • The best souvenirs to bring home are rugs, carpets, leathers, spices, oils, lanterns, fragrances, pottery, Babouches and, artisanal soaps and Berber baskets. BEST CITIES WITH UNMISSABLE ATTRACTIONS 1. Marrakech Medina represents a colorful experience where you enter a world of mazelike alleyways full of random acrobats, traditional musicians, stall vendors and snake charmers.

6. Essaouira is the most charming seaside town of Morocco. It’s an authentic hippie place with colorful fishing boats, old shore-side fortress walls and twisty alleyways.

2. Hassan II Mosque is the major landmark of Casablanca city. It’s a precious symbol of Morocco, with carved marble pieces and marble mosaic representing the traditional Islamic architecture and greatness of the Moroccan craftsmanship.

7. Oudaias Kasbah in Rabat is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods located in the city’s core. A lost in time atmosphere is felt right away within this old fortress with white and blue houses, rimmed by colorful flowerpots.

3. Volubilis is a day trip from Fes or Meknes, where Roman ruin with a clutch of mesmerizing mosaics, tumbled columns and temple remnants are found.

8. Erg Chebbi in the eastern Sahara is where the grand sand dunes are located. It’s a main destination for four-wheel-drive dune-bashing, dune surfing and camel trekking.

4. Chefchaoun, located in the Rif mountains, is the incredibly glow town with the blue on blue labyrinth of buildings. Wandering the alleys of the town is very soothing and peaceful; it’s also one of the country’s main hiking and trekking destinations. 5. Fes El Bali is the country’s other cultural destination besides Marrakech. The old city is an authentic beautifully chaotic place, not filled with tourists, unlike its sister imperial city of the south.

9. Legzira Beach at Sidi Ifni along the Atlantic coast is known for its natural stone arch and red cliffs. It’s a striking rugged coastline and one of the main destinations for surfing and paragliding. 10. Hercules Cave in Tangier is located above the waves of the Atlantic Ocean with an entrance displaying traditional artifacts and items.

MOROCCAN CUISINE For highly affordable rates, you can guarantee you will be well fed, maybe even like royalty. • Tagine is one of the most famous foods of this country. There are a lot of different kinds, mostly with meat, that are slow cooked in ceramic or clay pots. • Couscous is the highlight of Moroccan cuisine. Beef or chicken is stewed along with diverse vegetables then arranged on steamed couscous grains. • Beef with Prunes is a great combination of sweet and savory. The prunes are poached in syrup with cinnamon and honey, and added to the meat then cooked until buttery tender with ginger, saffron and onions. • Harira is the tomato soup loaded with chickpeas, lentils and rice or fine noodles. It’s usually made with beef or lamb.

ONE-POT RECIPES FOR MEN! by Soha Darwish Food writer & Critic - Menu Consultant. Diploma in Food Journalism - London, Uk

Spinach & Prawns Tortellini:

Serves 4

A heavenly match of fresh pasta, seafood and cream. An easy recipe to follow with few ingredients - delivering mesmerising flavours of sea, earth and lush dairy. It’s healthy comfort food at its best. What more could you ask for?

Shopping Basket: 500g peeled medium prawns – 400g frozen spinach – 1 small chopped onion –1 pack of chilled spinach & ricotta tortellini pasta (approx. 400 g)–3 tbsp olive oil - 2 crushed garlic cloves –¼ tsp nutmeg–pinch of paprika - 250 ml whipping cream - salt & pepper.

Steps: 1. In a deep large pan, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil, until translucent. 2. Add frozen spinach (or fresh spinach leaves), stir fry until it’s completely thawed. Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg and paprika. 3. Cover with water and simmer until almost cooked, then add cream and simmer again for about 2 mins. 4. Gently stir in the fresh tortellini together with the raw prawns - partially cover with lid and simmer for about 5mins until pasta is cooked and prawns are rosy. Don’t overcook, these are delicate ingredients and only need a few minutes on the hob. 5. Serve immediately with generous sprinkles of grated Parmesan. Surely you will enjoy! 52 April 2019

I come from a home where food and cooking were never taken lightly, which definitely embedded the foodie in me. But like anything in life it really does take two to tango, and this is where my father’s role transpired. I believe that when men are interested in cooking, not necessarily on daily basis of course -they somehow elevate the culinary skills in the household. But I also note that most men are usually happy to cook only when; a) they are in a good mood b) the kitchen’s ambiance is inviting and when I say inviting, I mean clean and tidy - with all the prep work done by somebody -and when I say somebody, on most occasions it’s the wife!

popped in my mind. Desperately endeavouring to make it as tempting and encouraging as possible to get them into the kitchen. Addressing all situations, whether you are a family man who enjoys taking over the dinner service every blue moon, a bachelor who spends most of his salary on dining out or a college student away from his family, who ends up ordering junk food delivery at least five times a week, despite his best intentions.

Here are two recipes tested and tried, in fact they have become home staples, when I’m running against time or not willing to cause havoc in my tidy kitchen. One is original and the other is a So, when I was asked to write my regular food topic classic with a twist –both highly nutritious and in a men’s issue, the one-pot recipes theme just just delicious.

Chicken & Mushroom Lemon Risotto: Serves 4 Risottos are classic Italian rice dishes that are always welcomed in any setting with its sublime creaminess, though no cream is used. It is really frowned upon in Italy to add cream in risottos, why should you really?! In this recipe the egg yolk twist is optional, but it really brightens up the dish and boosts its mellowness and nourishment.

Shopping Basket: 400g Arborio or Carnaroli rice – 300g diced chicken fillets – 250g sliced chestnut mushrooms - 1 large chopped onion – 2 chopped stalks of celery – 3 tbsp olive oil – 1 chicken or vegetable stock cube – 2 egg yolks - 1 Adalia lemon – pinch of nutmeg – 200g grated Parmesan cheese - salt & pepper.

Steps: 1. Boil about 800 ml of water in a kettle, then pour about 500ml in a jug stirring in the stock cube and keep it on your side. 2. In a large pan, sauté the onions and celery in olive oil until translucent, then add the chicken and mushrooms. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg and stir fry for about 4 mins. 3. Add the risotto rice directly from the packet (without washing) and stir in gently, until all is combined. 4. On medium heat, pour some of the stock in the jug covering the risotto, stir until stock is absorbed, then repeat same process until rice is cooked. Starch will be slowly released turning the mixture creamy. It usually takes about 20 mins to cook, never leave it unattended. Keep stirring gently with your jug handy, if stock finishes then use remaining water in the kettle. 5. In a cup mix the egg yolks with the grated lemon zest and half of the Parmesan cheese. Stir them into the cooked risotto for about 1 min on low heat, then take it off the hob. 6. Sprinkle with some finely chopped parsley and the rest of the cheese, then serve immediately. Nothing really prepares you for this blissful symphony of flavours! April 2019 53

IDENTITY OUT & ABOUT

JINN: FIRST ARABIC ORIGINAL SERIES ON NETFLIX Since the moment Netflix has announced to premier its first Arabic original series this year, the anticipation and excitement began! From the series title, Jinn, we can see the promise of a young adult fantasy adventure mixing themes of Supernatural and Teen Soap Opera drama. We met with the cast and show-runners of the the highly-anticipated series on a set visit in Amman, the White City, so that we can delve with them into the world of Jinn. Executive producers Elan and Rajeev Dassani took us through the story of Jinn that follows a group of teenagers, who unknowingly invite the supernatural forces of Jinn, a mythological creature, into their world while at the ancient city of Petra. A battle of good versus evil and a race against time ensues. The show runners explained that one of the reasons behind shooting in Jordan was their attempt to show the world the beauty of Jordan, and present the actual life of Arab teenagers, which in their opinion is very much similar to any teenager’s life around the world. We had a chance to meet with the young rising stars of the show, a cast of up-and-coming local talents including Salma Malhas, who plays Mira, the main character of the show. She explained that her character is a rebellious teen still devastated after the loss of her mother, who learns to love again when she meets Keras, played by Hamza Abu Eqab, 54 April 2019

the Jinn who is tasked with guarding vigilante Jinns. The show also stars Sultan Al-khalil as Yassin, Aysha Shahalthough as Vera, Yaser Al Hadi as Fahed and Ban Halaweh as Layla. Sultan Al-khalil told us about a little trick he and some of the cast do to help them stay in characters throughout the shooting of the show; while on set they all call each other with their characters’ names and not their real names. Al-khalil explained that the minute he steps in the car to go to work, he asks everyone to call him Yassin, it helps him focus more on portraying his character. Aysha Shahalthough, who plays Vera, had different thoughts about the matter. She explained that as soon as the cameras stop rolling she prefers to go back to being herself, not Vera, distancing herself from the character while not working helps her figuring out herself as an actress not just a character on the show. The six-episode series is directed by Lebanese director Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya and Jordanian screenwriter Bassel Ghandour, who wish that Jinn will bring the Middle East folklore into the modern world, exploring contemporary themes of Jinn mythology but with a coming of age supernatural story about friendship, love and adventure. The series is expected to be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2019. We wish all the best to the cast and creators of Jinn, and we can’t to see the series. It is bound to be spectacular.

IDENTITY SIGNS

ARIES

22 Mar – 19 Apr

STRENGTHS: Adventurous, honest, powerful, self-assured, optimistic, brave, and independent. WEAKNESSES: Impulsive, self-centered, impatient, moody, aggressive, bad-tempered. CAREER: Leaders by birth, Aries folks love to be confronted with a little bit of competition in the work environment but they hate to lose, which may represent a challenge. Their fire energy and action-orientation make them perfect for leadership roles. MOST COMPATIBLE WITH AT WORK: Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius

VIRGO With a responsible Virgo and a spontaneous Aries, this is not the easiest partnership. If they reach a middle ground, this can be an effective match.

WORK COMPATIBILITY ARIES They feed each other tremendous energy at work. Some power struggles may arise due to their competitive natures, thus, a clear role definition is a necessity. TAURUS This match may have a push-pull dynamic that can be draining. However, Taurus can save Aries from rash decisions and Aries inspires Taurus with their enthusiasm. GEMINI A great work partnership allows them both to sustain their massive energies. Aries admires Gemini’s fluency while Gemini encourages Aries’ bold behaviour. CANCER The sensitive Cancer and the light-hearted Aries are emotionally opposites, which leads to a successful professional partnership. They achieve their objectives through different means. LEO A very dynamic match. Clashes may occur due to power struggles. But it can be avoided by giving Aries the space to work independently and giving Leo the praise they need. 66 April 2019

LIBRA Working alongside with Libra can be challenging for the workaholic Aries, due to the playful attitude of Libra. However, they can give Aries a balanced moderated professional perspective. SCORPIO The best work environment for them is one full of challenges. They share immense passion, but their professional ways are different that it might cause some issues. SAGITTARIUS With a drive for risk taking and learning new stuff, they share the same work values. The thing is that both signs hate routine, so they can take turns for those tasks. CAPRICORN This challenging partnership can be felicitous by filling each other’s gaps. Persistent Capricorn completes the lack of Aries follow-through, while Aries is great at starting new things. AQUARIUS Finding creative solutions to challenges is what compiles these two. They both like working independently, far from traditional practices and lame business models. PISCES This is a strong collaboration, with Pisces’ creativity and Aries’ ability to put plans into action. Pisces will give Aries all the glory they want as they prefer to work in peace.
