I
miss that pen and paper feeling. I miss playing with the pen in my hair for sparkling ideas, shaking it for creative thinking, talking to it, expressing how I feel about what it was writing… I miss the feeling of holding a pen in my hands, the pain I feel in my fingers after I finish writing!!! I used to write a lot; my inner thoughts, my feelings, my agonies, my cries for help or love, my joy, my love life, my pleasures, my to-do-lists, my groceries, my shopping list……everything!!!
Now I barely write, this letter every month is as much as it gets. This computer is not my companion. We don’t bond for some odd, unknown reason. Maybe it is because we have no history together? Maybe it is because we have no memories? Maybe it was never there to share my miseries and happiness? Maybe I feel intimidated by its capabilities that I do not master? OR Maybe because it just isn’t me…

HOW TO DEAL WITH SEXISTS It happens more often than it should when someone comes up with a sexist joke, comment, or action. It could be anyone from a joking friend, a heedless parent, insensitive partner, an infuriating colleague, or anyone else that we happen to stumble upon in life. There are many ways to deal with sexists, here are a few ways on how to do just that. KNOW YOUR VALUE. One of the most important things to do is to know your worth. You are not dumb. You are not a bad driver. You are not an object. You are not owned by anyone. You can think for yourself. You can wear what you decide to wear. You can make decisions. You were not born to cook or clean. You can do anything you put your mind to. You are not less than anyone else. Value yourself, own yourself, control your own life, and be confident about it. TURN THE TABLE. If someone makes a sexist remark about you, turn the table and make a remark about them. It goes both ways, and can be equally funny and annoying. At least then you would be making it clear that you are not intimidated a bit by their remark. REPORT IT. If you are a student, employee, or just someone that has an “authority figure” that you can go to for help, do that. You can go to the HR or a manager at your work place, or to parents or grandparents at home, to voice your concerns. Find someone that can help you put a stop to the intolerable behaviour.
CONFRONT THEM. If someone is being a sexist in their remarks, jokes, or actions, it is highly unlikely that one day they will wake up thinking that they shouldn’t do this anymore and that it is wrong. You should have an honest talk with that person, pointing out their unacceptable behaviour and its negative impact. Be honest and sincere about it, try to calmly get your point through. DON’T LAUGH. In this age there are so many sexist ads and movies that it became somewhat OK to joke about it. Some people have limited personalities and imagination that they repeat those stereotypes in an attempt to fit in or just to be funny. When you are faced with such a situation make it clear that you do not find it funny, not even with a complimentary smile. If you laugh or smile about it then you are giving an “it’s OK” signal that can only make things get worse.

STAND UP. Don’t literally stand up, just stand up for yourself, defend yourself and your gender. Unfortunately many people, mostly women, are not brought up to stand up for themselves. We are not taught how to make someone stop bothering us, how to say no, nor how to defend ourselves, we are only taught how to agree, thank, be polite, kind and gentle. We have to learn to stand up for ourselves, defending ourselves without needing someone to come rescue us.

Such a strong bond between a mother and a daughter is rare to find these days and I would interpret this as the outcome of great work and dedication for many years! There is one thing – just one thing – that I found alarming with the way you phrased your message to me; you referred to your college daughter as your “baby girl”! I know that a mother will always think of her babies as “her babies” no matter how young or how old they are but to actually spell it out in an email is a bit over the board. I would not “blame” you for the fact that your daughter is shy and introverted; this is the character she was born with. She had so many chances to mingle and build various social relationships but her nature is not geared towards engagement and socializing.

1) SET AN EXAMPLE! Let her watch you build and maintain friendships! Allow her to mingle with you and your friends in outings, shopping sprees, and causal trips. 2) BE A BRIDGE! Become a bridge between her world with you and her world without you! Encourage her to invite one or two girls she likes to your house, to your outings, to your lunches, to your visits to the mall, and to some family events like birthdays and anniversaries.
I am a mother of an only child. My girl is everything to me! I am not exactly a social butterfly but I enjoy doing everything with my baby girl. But now I fear that this might have affected her negatively. She is very shy and an introvert and doesn’t have any friends at all. She just started college and I don’t want her to miss out on great experiences! Is this my fault for being too close to her?
3) GET INVOLVED! En roll – the two of you – in a community building activity! Choose some sort of charity work or public service activities and start together. Let her watch you go out of your comfort zone and try something totally new. Show her that it is fun and that people could be fun to work with. In a few years she will join the work force and will have to interact with people on various levels of intimacy. Start now with my advice to avoid shocking her after graduation. Do not think of this as “fixing” your daughter or “correcting” your mistake; think of it as an extension to your role as a great mother and extra fun activities to enjoy with your daughter.

Just at 26 years old, Heba Serag cemented her status as one of Cairo’s Fashionistas. The young mother and business woman talks to us about everything from fashion to motherhood! Tell us a little more about yourself… Basically I am just like every other woman who is obsessed with Fashion and life style. I am also an artist, as I paint and do photography. I recently taught myself how to cook and apparently I am very good at it! I am a new mommy and I love it. I also travel and read often. How did you get the idea for fashion garage? I have always been obsessed with dresses and I am constantly purchasing more and more; even if I don’t wear them or just wear them once and never wear them again. Until my mother wanted to get rid of the endless piles of clothes that I have and suggested I host a garage sale to sell my things and this is when the idea was born. Tell us more about the event you’re hosting this month Well, basically it is a Fashion Bazaar where individuals like myself and your self are allowed to come and sell their own products/items whether these items are previously owned or brand new. We are also focusing on giving a chance to a lot of young designers to showcase their designs and sell them at the event along with a lot of well known and established high end
stores and international names. By hosting this event we wish to amass a good number of profits as Fashion Garage will be donating 15% of all proceedings to charity. How’s it like being a working mother? I find it to be a joyous challenge! It is hard to try and balance between both worlds, trust me. However, I want my son to look up to me and find a successful role model and I relish one’s sense of accomplishment. What is your fashion obsession? For sure, Dresses are my Fashion obsession and then bags and shoes follow.
What do you think of the fashion industry in Cairo? I am happy to see new names in the industry everyday and secretly praying that Cairo will be a Fashion Capital once again.

UNDERSTANDING & MATURE When looking for a life partner, finding a woman who you can “fight well” with is as important as anything else in a relationship. Not just that but also a mature and understanding person who can handle a conversation, solve problems or simply lend an ear to your troubles.

I’m not so sure if this one is necessarily for girls only, but we need to stop judging the younger generation. Remember you once wore cropped tops and showed you stomach, you may have gotten drunk before and lost control, and there was a time when you used to be the youngest girl at a party too.

Salsa chicken SERVINGS COUNT: 4 PREPARATION TIME: 5 minutes COOKING TIME: 40 minutes INGREDIENTS 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 4 teaspoons taco seasoning mix 1 cup salsa 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons sour cream (optional) DIRECTIONS - Preheat oven to 190 degrees c - Place chicken breasts in a lightly greased baking dish - Sprinkle taco seasoning on both sides of chicken breasts, and pour salsa over all - Bake at 190 degrees c from 25 to 35 minutes until chicken is tender and juicy and its juices run clear - Sprinkle chicken evenly with cheese, and continue baking for an additional 3 to 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly - Top with sour cream and serve
Easy Tuna Casserole SERVINGS COUNT: 8 PREPARATION TIME: 15 minutes COOKING TIME: 30 minutes INGREDIENTS 3 cups cooked macaroni 1 (6 ounce) can tuna, drained 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 1 1/2 cups French fried onions
Baked salmon fillet Dijon SERVINGS COUNT: 4 PREPARATION TIME: 5 minutes COOKING TIME: 40 minutes INGREDIENTS 4 (4 ounce) fillets salmon 3 tablespoons prepared Dijonstyle mustard Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup Italian-style dry bread crumbs 1/4 cup butter, melted
DIRECTIONS - Preheat oven to 175 degrees C - In a baking dish, combine the macaroni, tuna, and soup. Mix well, and then top with cheese. - Bake at 175 degrees C for about 25 minutes, or until bubbly. Sprinkle with fried onions, and bake for another 5 minutes. Serve hot

When I was chosen as the “editor of the month” nothing popped in my mind but the Fashion Week and all the beautiful runway looks each designer showcases in London, New York, Paris and finally Milan; which is my personal favourite! Here are the highlights of the most outstanding shows…
David Koma’s inspiration was the paintings of “Lucas Cranach The Elder” however the show had this futuristic edge.
The Gucci silhouettes were more 1960’s than 1970’s and in general we can say that it is a light and youthful collection.
Fausto Puglisi was all about bold colours, edgy and sultry silhouettes and the most interesting thing was that his main influence included Orphism art, Les Ballets Russes and The Statue of Liberty.
Antonio Berardi as usual stayed true to his fiercely sexy script of clothes with his main focus on a feminine waist line.
Mr. Jeremy Scott’s collection for Moschino brings fun back to fashion! As usual humour is an essential ingredient in his designs that’s why Mr. Scott is the best designer for the label; mixing much loved comfort food with fashion!
Christopher Kane constantly brings new techniques to the runway this time blending fabrics and textures with unlikely silhouettes to give this imaginative effect.

DISTRACT YOURSELF WITH THE CLOSEST SURROUNDINGS If you want to dodge the ‘When will I see you happily married’ conversation, there is no need for heavy artillery just yet; instead, you can distract yourself and others by your current

surroundings. You can offer to help prepare dessert, do the dishes or even play a little soccer game with the wee ones. It’s enough to keep you engaged in a family activity and away from the prying ears of the ‘concerned’ aunties. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK, GO FIGURE. Yes an obvious one. A rule that we all seem to forget right before we blabber out the wrong thing at the wrong time. Before you start gloating about your excellent GPA to your cousin who failed and has to attend summer school due to the chicken pox, make sure you have your facts checked, what may seem as a harmless conversation starter, may end up as a ‘somebody better call an ambulance’ kind of night.
So, if all fails, just try and sit there quietly with a smile and observe, you may end being amused.

FUTURESHORTS FILM FESTIVAL The pop up festival came to town last month at nonother than art bar Vent. The festival showcased several short movies from around the world dealing with different stories and issues. The list included a crowd’s favourite animated movie “The Blind Spot”, talking about how things always have many point of views in a humorous and yet touching way. Also a polish movie “Out of Reach” by Jakub Stozek deals with two sisters in search of their absent mother. The event attracted an artistic and eccentric crowd; a mix of downtown underground scene and club rats.

Martin Scorsese & Leonardo Dicaprio’s latest collaboration has been whipping up a storm of opinions ranging from outstanding to dull and cliché. Maybe because people expected more out of the powerful duo but according to Peter Bradshaw, a reviewer for The Guardian, “It’s a raucous, crazily energised, if occasionally slightly shallow epic on a familiar subject, conducted in the classic voiceover-nostalgia style with sugar-rush jukebox slams on the soundtrack.” Bradshaw expected more of this collaboration and many others would agree on that. On the other hand, many more say that this movie is the crown on all of Dicaprio’s acting career; expecting the Oscar nominee to finally snatch the best actor award this year! The interesting aspect of the movie is the humorous touch that is added to the dramatic moral inspection of the main character. Whether good or bad, this movie is definitely not one to be missed!
