HOW TO...

HOW TO DEAL WITH A PARTNER THAT NEVER REMEMBERS YOUR ANNIVERSARY

Every minute in a good relationship is worth celebrating, but since celebrating every minute literally would be all kinds irrational, celebrating anniversary milestones will have to suffice. But what if you care to count the days, the months, and the years, but your loved one couldn’t care less about them? EXPRESS IT None of us are mind readers (as far as I know). Like anniversaries are important to you, they might not be important to your partner, and you both won’t know how the other feels about it unless you say it out loud. Help them see your point of view, why its important for you to celebrate that day together. DIY If you want something done, just Do It Yourself! If it is an important day to YOU then maybe YOU should plan it; make it a special day. Take charge, make it special. DON’T KILL IT Don’t exhaust your relationship about minor things; if you fight about how your partner forgot your anniversary

last year, and argue nonstop about the past and future of all anniversaries combined, you will exhaust yourself, exhaust your partner, and strain your relationship unnecessarily. THE OTHER SIDE Do you know why your partner doesn’t want to celebrate? Why is it not important to them? Why is it so meaningless from their perspective? Try to deliver your own point of view, but also try to see it and really understand it from theirs, who knows, maybe they have an actual point. LET IT GO Honestly, if all is well aside from the nonexistent anniversary celebrations, than maybe you should just let that one slide. It is hard if you care about it a lot, but think of every day of being together as a celebration of love. EVALUATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP As much as it is good to compromise, and find a middle ground that mostly works for both of you, it is also very important to be heard, valued, and to see compromises happening from your partner’s side too. Evaluate and see if the relationship is actually working for you. If it makes you happy then great, but if you are unhappy, unappreciated, always compromising, never compromised for, then you just might want to reconsider your relationship. 14 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

Anniversary

MILESTONES 101: ONE MONTH: confirms that there is strong potential for the relationship. THREE MONTHS: the probation period ends, you are getting closer and closer and know that you are heading towards the real deal. SIX MONTHS: by that time the honeymoon phase is slowly fading away, you already know your partner’s flaws, your relationship’s strengths and weaknesses. At this point you can know if your relationship is going strong and will make you happy, or if it just shouldn’t go anywhere at all. FIRST ANNIVERSARY: a whole year! That’s something worth celebrating, and being proud of! All annual anniversaries from now on are special, a sign of your ongoing love and commitment, With every 5 years mark being the most special, extra special anniversaries are the 5th, 10th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and if you are still alive then 75th and 100th are definitely worth celebrating, BIG TIME!

LOVE ADVICE

Dear Confused Your message is very alarming! If you examine the development of your relationship, when you were just dating his family’s influence was minimal, now that you are engaged their influence is deeper and violating, how do you think things will be after you are married and you are officially and legally one of them? If you think that after marriage you will not see them that much, then you are very wrong! You will see them at least once a week – if not more. You would also be expected to call his mother at least twice a week and usually it is more. Think of the lunches and dinners you will have at their place and the ones they will have at yours. Think of the outings and vacations you will spend together. Think of your kids! Yes! Eventually you will have kids and your in-laws will be their grandparents!

DAZED AND CONFUSED

“IF LIMITS ARE NOT SET FROM THE BEGINNING, THERE IS NO WAY THAT COULD CHANGE IN THE FUTURE!

Hi, Marwa. I am 23 years old and have been engaged to my boyfriend of 2 years for almost 9 months now. He comes from a very conservative family and his parents are extremely religious, while I am not. After the engagement, though, his parents – especially his mom- started interfering EVEN MORE and criticizing my every move, the way I dress and act and throwing hints about me eventually wearing Hijab. My fiancé says that once we are married things will change and they won’t get a say in our lives, but something tells me differently. What do I do?

How do you think that their interference in your life will be less? They will have an opinion in everything related to your pregnancy, birth-giving, breastfeeding, and how you hold your baby, feed your baby, dress your baby, talk to your baby, and many more details! My point is: The in-laws do not just vanish! Their influence and opinions that were once subtle become clear and outspoken. If limits are not set from the beginning, there is no way that could change in the future! If your mother-in-law has the audacity today to criticize the way you dress and behave, then is a nosy person who will never mind her business and stay out of yours! Your fiancé loves you and just wants to get married and it is obvious that he does not have the power to protect your privacy – not now and not in the future. I am not telling you to call off your wedding! I am asking you to be realistic and to start working on a plan on how to keep a healthy distance between yourself and your in-laws.

FASHION TIPS

4.

KNOW YOUR COLOURS Know the colours that flatter your figure and your skin the most and avoid the ones that don’t!

the

5.

INVEST Yes! There is such thing in fashion. Invest in an expensive jeans, blazer, bag, or shoes. These are four items that will stay with you for a long time, so try to pick basic ones that will never go out of trend.

10

6.

WHEN IN DOUBT, OVERDRESS There’s nothing worse than showing up at an event underdressed! If you’re confused about the dress code, overdress!

7.

FASHION TIPS TO LIVE BY!

1.

MAKE SURE YOU CAN WALK IN THEM We all sacrifice comfort for looking good sometimes, yet nothing looks worse than a girl drunk walking! The shoes can look gorgeous but they can also make you look bad. Don’t waste your money.

2.

SHOP SOLO Going shopping alone will help you concentrate more on what you want and what you’re looking for. Having a friend shop with you is great but can also be confusing.

3.

FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, LOOK UNCOMFORTABLE Your confidence is affected by what you’re wearing, so if you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, you probably look uncomfortable to people around you. Always make sure you’re confident with your outfit before you head out!

8.

STOCK UP ON BASICS White and black blouses and tank tops, a little black dress, high heels, red lipstick, diamond studs, blue jeans, and anything that has a central role in your daily style and outfits.

9.

SHOW SKIN STRATEGICALLY Choose one -only one- body part and show it off. Don’t show everything you’ve got, otherwise where’s the mystery?

TRY ON MORE THAN ONE SIZE Sizes vary among designers and brands. Make sure you don’t buy your size without trying it on first. Then try on different sizes as well so you can be sure which one suits you best.

10.

UNIQUENESS Always have a unique style or wear a specific item that represents you and who you are. (A special converse, a scarf, a bracelet…)

INTO THE DEEP

LIVING (AND LOVING!) CAIRO What is Cairo? To some, it is just the capital of Egypt. To others, it is a hot topic in recent media headlines. To others still it is a longed for vacation destination, the site of the Great Pyramids of Giza, or the romanticized city of an entire movie genre. But to a legion of ex-pats, it is much more that all of that, it is our new “home”. I moved to Cairo a year ago to start the job of a lifetime working at The American University in Cairo. For me, the opportunity to come to Egypt was something I had dreamed about since I was a little kid. The history, the culture, the adventure, and the global reputation of AUC all held irresistible appeal. I had offers in other places around the world but as soon as the offer to work at AUC came in, my decision was made. I was Egyptbound. Although there have been some uncomfortable moments during the past year as the country has transitioned governments, I have never regretted my decision to move here. In fact, from the moment I got here I was eagerly plotting ways to be able to stay. And so when the offer to renew my contract came in, I did so without hesitation. Sometimes when you visit a place you feel like you could live there. Other times you realize it might be fine for a visit but not any place you would want to set down roots. For me, and for thousands of other ex-pats, Cairo is a place we not only feel like we could live, but a place we are proud to live.

“FOR MANY OF US, LIVING IN EGYPT IS A NEVERENDING OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN.”

Sarah Wadsworth, a teacher from the UK who has been living in Cairo for 14 years, says “Egypt is an amazing country that still inspires me every day (99% positively, 1% frustratingly!). I never get bored despite having lived here for 14 years. If you take your time to really get to know people, they will look out for you and treat you like only your family could do, with great loyalty. I experienced this never more so during the turbulent times of the revolution in 2011. So many things to do, so many places to go, awe inspiring landscapes, incredible history. What’s not to love?!” Ryder Kouba, a librarian originally from the United States and a recent move to Cairo, enjoys the unpredictability and adventure of living in Egypt. He says, “What I enjoy about being an expat in Cairo is the everyday adventures and surprises, from ordering food and groceries online, to haggling with taxi drivers, and finding good surprises (such as the better felluca place, koshary joints, etc.).” For many of us, living in Egypt is a never-ending opportunity to learn. No other place in the world offers as many exciting possibilities to explore history, culture, architecture, art, nature, and even ourselves. Alexandra Parrs, a French woman now living here with her American husband,

comments, “I love being an expat in general because I feel like I reinvent myself during each experience and grab and incorporate new parcels of identities in that new self. I especially love Cairo. Each neighborhood has a different identity, a new story, Cairo is in your face and you can lose yourself in it, it has history of course but also a vibrant insolent present.” The adventure (for good and for bad), the history, and the beauty of the country are all big draws for anyone living in Cairo. Yes, the traffic might make us all loudly grumble on a daily basis, but where else in the world can you admire a wonder of the ancient world, a millennia old minaret, and the beauty of the Nile while grumbling? And yes, we might get a bit frustrated by the political situation but the humor, lightness, and good forgiving nature of the Egyptian people makes it all worth listening to. And yes the air might be polluted and the furniture constantly dusty, but one look out across the city from the heights of the Citadel, or one glimpse of the majestic pyramids from a felucca on the Nile, or one peaceful moment meditating in Sultan Hassan or one of the other countless beautiful mosques the city has to offer, and no view in the world will seem quite so lovely. Parrs paints the picture of Cairo perfectly, “I love Cairo because of the energy the place has. It is also a bit broken, like an old lady who has been smoking and partying too much and has many crazy stories to share. Some of them are really absurd, most of them very touching, funny.” I couldn’t agree more. So hats off to you old lady Cairo. Thank you for sharing your energy. Thank you for sharing your stories. And thank you for letting us ever-grateful expats call you home.

HOW TO BREAK A WOMAN IN TEN WAYS!

T

ell her she’s not enough, that whatever she does is faulty and incomplete, that her dress makes her fat and ugly, that her make up is lousy…etc. dear man remember you’re not a gift from God. You make mistakes and you’re not perfect!

when she is unable to enjoy anything while her man doesn’t even bother!

Make her change by luring her in the name of love that this is important for “us” while it’s actually for your own ego! In the end, she finds herself a complete stranger, she is neither able to go back to her old self, nor is she able to please you anymore. Why?! Because you, dear man, start to criticize her for not being the one you used to love!

Let go of her when she needs you the most. Make her see how unreliable and unworthy you are of her sacrifice. She’d feel psychologically naked in front of the whole world and will lose trust and faith in everyone!

Fight over silly stuff, or ignore her anger, then go out and have fun with your friends, not returning her calls. Dear man, the hardest thing a girl can feel is when her man is unable to communicate with her or understand the reason why she is sad or angry. Not to mention the horrible feeling of how pathetic she is

Refuse to make her do the things she loves the most claiming that they will distract her from pampering you -Oh, sorry- and taking care of the house, the kids…etc. Don’t forget to object when she does the same!

Return after months or even years of separation and lie to her saying that you love her and couldn’t bear this time without her! Fool her into believing you again, drain her feelings, then leave her when you find another catch! Get her to lose trust and faith in her friends, or convince her that she has priorities and that they

22 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

don’t have a place in her life anymore. Make her believe that you’re enough till she feels lonely and fully dependent on you, then complain that you are busy and have a life of your own! Be jealous of her success and accomplishment; get her to believe she is nothing, that her success at home is far more important; that her work is an obstacle to your happiness, taking the kids as an excuse; that she is a bad mother! Exercise your manly loving powers to get her to do what you want then turn your back to her wishes and expectations! Beat her, or call her names and make a scene in front of her friends or neighbors, unleash the beast inside, get her to know how insecure you are; that you’re having a deep inferiority complex; that you are petty and unworthy.

Dear man, if you’re doing some or all of the above, just for you to know, you’re being utterly and extremely selfish!

HEALTH MATTERS

MANAGING YOUR PMS CRAVINGS!

Alright, so if you’re anything like me, when I am on my period I basically turn into this human vacuum that eats everything. So I’m going to tell you why this inner food demon comes out and what you can do about it. By the way, I am not a doctor....I am a woman who has endured this evolutionary bullsh*t for too long and has had enough. And now I shall share my personal views with you.

24 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

F

irst of all, when you’re getting your period there are three things that happen to you that effect your eating habits

1. You become bloated 2. You become hormonal and emotional 3. You get psycho, serial killer cravings.

So why do we get so damn bloated? When we typically workout, this awesome thing happens to our stomachs where they flatten a bit because we are losing so much water. However, you’ll notice when you’re getting your period it doesn’t flatten out so much. That is because your body is retaining water, therefore your stomach turns into a giant birthday party balloon. Now that your stomach is nice and humongous, this is typically the time you get edgy and b*tchy and you probably hate your body the most at this time. You call yourself fat, huge, disgusting. And most likely, the excessive self-hatred is also coming from your unfortunate hormones making you emotional. Your giant belly and your satanic emotions are now making the excuse in your head, WELL I’M FAT ANYWAY SO I MIGHT AS WELL EAT EVERYTHING! So you start stuffing your face with crap and junk making you even MORE bloated AND making you MORE emotional! Add on top of that, your body already has cravings because it is getting ready to lose a lot of nutrients when you lose blood on your period!

Second, when you start to become emotional, psychotic, crazy, don’t take it out on yourself! Take it out on someone else! DUH! your boyfriend, your husband, your fiancé, whoever is there that you are totally fine taking advantage of. Okay, okay, don’t do that. These men get a hard time enough as it is from the other stupid stuff they do. MOVING ON. This is a crucial time to do whatever you need to do to stay calm, relax, and basically continue loving yourself and your normal body processes. If you’re feeling emotional, then do things that will keep your heart beat steady such as taking a hot shower, meditate, do some yoga, workout (wellness log program pops up), read a book, write a little, anything that keeps you relaxed. If someone is annoying you and you know that your period is coming, then go to a separate room, take 10 huge breaths and go back to the person. When you’re emotional, it’s really important to SLOW everything down in your life as much as possible, the more you rush and make everything fast paced, the more nervous, worrisome and anxious you become. Lastly, whenever I have a sugar craving, and someone tells me “just eat a piece of fruit”, I literally want to punch them in the face. I actually encourage you to eat heavy BUT healthy food. The heavier the food, the more satisfied you’ll be. For instance, if you crave sugar then whip up a batch of delicious protein pancakes! Have peanut butter and a banana or make it into a smoothie. Dip some dates into almond butter. Melt some dark chocolate and dip strawberries into it (I said Dark, not milk!). Make vanilla protein, whole grain french toast. What if I’m craving savory foods? It’s actually easier for you to seek food because you can load up on the protein-rich foods you eat already. Have grilled chicken, a grand salmon fillet, eat a huge burger on a whole grain bun without the fattening sauces. It’s best you make these foods at home to save the grease.

Unfortunately ladies, as women we have been biologically programmed to go through a vicious cycle of self-hatred and becoming food machines.

You are no longer allowed to eat: milk chocolate, popcorn, chips, ice cream, and french fries.

WHAT THE HELL DO WE DO NOW?!

You are allowed to munch on nuts, fruit, veggies, and everything else Wellness Log approved.

First, you need to learn to love the sh*t out of your swollen stomach and realize that it’s doing you a huge favor. You’re a woman and this is just a part of being a woman. Be grateful you have a regular cycle in the first place. For god’s sake, if you don’t have a regular cycle, go see a doctor. Because you are missing out on being a healthy, strong, kick ass female.

So ladies, bottom line is eat lots and lots o hearty, healthy food when cravings kick in, love yourself. Love being a woman.

INTIMACY

UNDRESS TO TURN HIM ON!

It is not a hidden secret that men are visual creatures. With that in mind, you can master the art of seduction and turn him on! If you are more on the shy side and prefer to do so in a “subtle” way then here are a few outfit inspirations and tips on what clothes to wear to turn up the heat

REVEAL BUT DON’T BARE IT ALL: Showing some skin is essential to activating his visual stimuli but don’t go overboard. Short skirts, plunging necklines, sheer and backless items are your best bet; they show enough skin while keeping the rest to his imagination which increases his anticipation.

Lingerie: Now that is an easy one. Showing just a little of your lace bra will do just the trick. Trust us. 27 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

SHOW YOUR ASSETS: Every woman knows what stands out the most about her face and figure. Wear a dark glossy lipstick to pop your full lips, wear a body hugging dress that will show your figure or put on sexy heels to accentuate your fabulous legs!

THE RIGHT COLOUR: Many women choose red as their go-to colour when trying to look sexy but it really depends on your skin tone and the item you are wearing. Black is always sexy, dark purple and royal blue is great for women with red and black hair.

FASHION REPORT

MOST SHOCKING FASHION WEEK MOMENTS EVER!!!

THE BALENCIAGA BENCH When the front row benches collapsed under the world’s fashion heavyweights at Balenciaga’s spring/ summer 2012 defilé. Guests including Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfield and Mario Testino all fell to the floor in what was the first seating malfunction a fashion week has ever witnessed.

LIGHTS FALLING ON HILARY ALEXANDER More accustomed to writing fashion news stories than appearing in them, style pundit Hilary Alexander miraculously escaped injury in 2005 after lights at Diane Von Furstenberg’s spring/summer 2006 show fell from the ceiling.

NAOMI CAMPBELL’S CATWALK FALL To fall from grace is one thing but for Naomi Campbell, of all models, to trip the runway fantastic in a pair of Vivienne Westwood specials is another.

ANNA WINTOUR’S PAINT ATTACK At Paris Fashion Week in October 2005, Anna Wintour’s penchant for fur resulted in an opportunist paint attack by animal rights campaigners.

KATE MOSS SMOKING Our favourite fashion rebel Kate Moss left front rowers a-gasp when she closed the Louis Vuitton autumn/winter 2011 show smoking a cigarette. Breaking the indoor smoking ban coupled with lighting up on National No Smoking Day added to the onlookers’ confusion. The point? Freedom of expression, of course.

GLASS BOXES AND BANDAGES AT ALEXANDER MCQUEEN The master of macabre didn’t disappoint at his spring/ summer 2001 showcase. Models in strait jackets, kimonos and bandages -Kate Moss among them - were encased in a giant glass box, where they had to pretend to be insane. Frightening.

REAL TIGERS AT LOUIS VUITTON? Photographs of three tigers protecting the opening to the Louis Vuitton spring/summer 2010 catwalk sent the twitterati wild. But it was merely a ruse – the ferocious cats were, in fact, fine specimens of taxidermy.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN’S ABSENCE In February 2011, just before London Fashion Week, we learned of the tragic suicide of British design extraordinaire Alexander McQueen. With the entire world still in mourning, it was McQueen’s absence at his final collection which amplified fashion’s immense loss.

HORSES AT HERMÈS Jean Paul Gaultier resorted to showmanship tactics to ensure a memorable departure from Hermès. At his final show for the French powerhouse, for spring/summer 2011, a dressage ring with eight dancing horses were ridden around his equestrienne procession.

HOLOGRAM OF KATE MOSS AT ALEXANDER MCQUEEN To close his autumn/winter 2006 collection, Alexander McQueen projected a ghostly apparition of Kate Moss wearing his iconic hologram gown. It was a poignant tribute to La Moss who, six months previously, had been caught taking drugs and was taking a break from the style circuit.

STOP BLINDLY FOLLOWING TRENDS. Are you honestly in love with your Moschino McDonalds inspired sweater? Your answer is probably not. I always make sure that any piece of clothing or accessory I invest in matches my style aesthetic. • So if I am feeling very minimalistic this season, I’ll ditch anything that looks like a color palette decided to vomit. The whole point of fashion is to express yourself with what you feel gives a statement about you. • Trends are not always on your side. I mean, soda is my BFF and would you ever see me rock the crop top trend? No. I choose silhouettes that flatter my body features not highlight the fact that my tummy is as big as a watermelon.

YOUR TAILOR IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. This is a post-shopping trip kind of thing. You have to know when that jean jacket is oversized and when it’s not your size (too big that is). Tailoring is the key to looking polished all times, even if you just have your day jean and shirt combo on. • We are very lucky with the whole underground tailor industry in Egypt, being as cheap and accessible as they will ever get. Take advantage of your local tailor and make sure your jeans perfectly fit you. STRAY AWAY FROM BRANDED ITEMS. Please, for the sake of high fashion, don’t look like a walking advertisement promoting some brand. Try to be as original and sincere to your fashion instincts as much you can.

• It is fine to own one, two or maybe three bags with LV’s logo splattered all over. I personally am addicted to MCM’s backpacks and wouldn’t mind to buy every single one the brand carries. But again without trying to repeat myself! Always ask yourself: do I REALLY like it? LET’S TALK SALE. Sales are the glorious times of the year in which I choose to invest in a piece I’ve been eyeing for a while. Google lets you know when all sales throughout the year start and end, so thank you Google for not letting me spend my shopping budget a week before sale and then totally regretting it. It is possible that you may not find trendy pieces on sale, so try to look for the basics instead. • My absolute all time favorite is Memorial Day Sale. You could easily snatch an Alexander Wang bucket bag for half the price on online shopping websites like Shopbop and Net-a-Porter. • Whether it’s Cairo Festival Mall or City Stars, summer sale is always on fire. Especially right after Eid and during Ramadan when all the good stuff are out. Don’t ever shop during Eid. I recently snatched my favorite all sequin skort for literally less than half the price. I bet you can totally picture the adrenaline rush when I saw the price tag. SECRET PLACES TO SHOP. Online shops are your best bet. Sometimes it gets a bit tricky with sizes and fit but most of the time, you will end up with the most precious piece you will ever own. • My favorites are: Late night eBay shopping for vintage finds, Pixie Market and ASOS for trendy and unique pieces and Khan el Khalili/local designers for authentic finds (and no, not khayameya). • Zara is my favorite fast fashion go to shop, you will be able to find all the trendy runway pieces of the season with a price we can actually afford.

Cairo. Also, don’t forget to shop your mom & grandma’s wardrobe; you’ll find invaluable fashion finds. IS IT WORTH THE MONEY? I always ask myself this question and spend from 5 to 10 minutes over the cashier playing mind games with myself. • I end up always paying with cash; that way I know if the purchase is worth it or not. • I personally hate blazers, would never ever put one on me, so it’s totally pointless to invest in one. I’d recommend mapping out what you need versus what you want. Indulge in the wants as much as you can, just don’t overlook the clean-cut basics that everything else revolves around. • Now that you know your shopping needs versus wants. Jot down your shopping budget and spend accordingly. Don’t spend 500 EGP on a shirt if you are on a tight budget.

Quick tips: • Forget about the rules (don’t take that literally). Shopping should be fun and sometimes fun is all about bending the rules. • We all have impulse purchases that we regret 10 minutes later and at a point indulge in a trend that is just blekhh. I blame Paris Hilton and the Kardashians for the spread of Juicy Couture tracksuits and UGGS. Thank you 2014 for tends that we wont regret 10 years later. • Experimentation is the key to getting to know more about your style aesthetic and persona. And once you nail that, you will start to follow your own shopping rules.

• Shopping at “Nomrosy” and “Kol Shi2” will give your old jeans and shirts that wow factor; it has been my all time favorite place since styling at The Fashion Studio in 35 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

Heba DESOUKI

wasn’t sure though of starting out here in Egypt due to the fashion industry’s reputation of unprofessionalism but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I started working with couple of agencies and through my experience with them I’ve decided to become a freelance model so I get to be picky about the quality of my work and people I work with. I was then contacted by 107 models agency in NY and I signed up with them in 2012 and then I signed up with 3D model agency in SA, same agency representing Irina Shayk. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN MODELING? I’m not a very talkative person so modeling for me is a way of expressing myself. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL SHOOT? I honestly don’t remember; but it was a catalogue shoot I did with face to face agency. HOW IS IT LIKE BEING A MODEL IN A COUNTRY LIKE EGYPT? Well modeling is pretty difficult everywhere. It takes a lot of hard work and stamina.

We’ve always had a lot of Egyptian fashion models, but we never really understood the difference between a regular good looking model, and a high-fashion model. Heba El Dessouky stepped in and changed that! Heba is one of the tallest models in town with an editorial look rather than a commercial one. Today we get to know a little bit more about this beauty.

ARE YOU EVER AFRAID OF HOW PEOPLE VIEW YOU, SEEING AS IT REQUIRES A CERTAIN OPENNESS THAT MIGHT NOT BE PRESENT IN THE MAJORITY OF THE EGYPTIAN SOCIETY? There are different modes of expression that people interpret differently. You still don’t want to offend people around you, on the contrary you want them to connect and relate to your work in some way. HAVE YOU CHOSEN MODELING AS A FULL-TIME JOB OR IS IT JUST A PART-TIME THING? In my opinion it isn’t wise to do modeling full time, being a doll or a pretty face isn’t good enough for anyone. I think you’ve to work on different sides of yourself and explore your potential.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. I studied commerce and majored in business administration. I’ve always been interested in fashion and modeling, I

goals. I believe everyone should follow their dreams and do what they like to do. Plus here in Egypt most of the designers put in consideration our Egyptian traditions while working on their designs.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN MODELING? I’ve always liked the idea of the whole modelling thing and everything that is related to fashion. I used to watch fashion shows for as long as I can remember; checking out models’ photos and learning from how they look and pose.

HAVE YOU CHOSEN MODELLING AS A FULL-TIME JOB OR IS IT JUST A PART-TIME THING? It’s a part time job and Insha’ Allah I’m planning to work in media, since I always wanted to be a TV presenter.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL MODELING WORK? My first step professionally was with photoboutique shooting for EGO and it was such a good decision and great shoot for my portfolio. And the last thing I did was with Fustany shooting for Maybelline. I believe this Maybelline shoot will add some much value to my portfolio as well, since this was their first campaign in Egypt.

TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. Hmmmm I’m kind of a nerd, I used to work as a Radio Presenter back when I was 16, and I LOVE FOOD!

HOW IS IT LIKE BEING A MODEL IN A COUNTRY LIKE EGYPT? I think it’s great although Egyptians underestimate being a model as a career. It’s very sad how they underestimate any profession other than doctors or engineers. ARE YOU EVER AFRAID OF HOW PEOPLE VIEW YOU, SEEING AS IT REQUIRES A CERTAIN OPENNESS THAT MIGHT NOT BE PRESENT IN THE MAJORITY OF THE EGYPTIAN SOCIETY? No, I’m never afraid of how people see me. If you let what people think of you get to you, you will never reach your 47 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

Radwa EL ZIKI

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO START BLOGGING? Writing and researching for fashion and beauty is not only my job but it’s also my hobby. So I thought why not create an outlet for myself to express my views and pictures. WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR BLOG? I usually post pictures of my outfits and a couple of fashion tips here and there. I try to include more ideas on the blog like trend and beauty reports. WHO IS YOUR NUMBER ONE FASHION INSPIRATION? I am obsessed with Olivia Palermo. I want her whole closet!

It all started with her blog, Zedified.wordpress.com where she basically blogged her fashion views but had no idea that she will become one of the best fashion bloggers in town! Radwa El Ziki is an AUC graduate with a degree in Integrated Marketing Communications and a minor in Psychology and writing and presently working as an Editorial Coordinator at enigma Magazine. We had a pleasure meeting with this young talent!

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BIGGEST GOAL FOR THE NEAR FUTURE- SAY IN 5 TO 10 YEARS, WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO BE? I really hope my blog picks up across the Middle East. I want it to be a fashion and life outlet and hopefully be my business in the future. WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU ADVICE ASPIRING BLOGGERS TO DO/USE? Be yourself and don’t try too hard, people notice that you might be faking it. Don’t imitate the rest of the people in this particular scene and don’t follow all the trends. Choose the ones that are suitable for your style and body type. TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. People say I am really good with impersonations! Haha it’s kind of my hidden talent.

Hadia

GHALEB at all times enabling me to have up to 3-4 posts per day. And that’s why I always try to keep it light, all the way from fashion tips to small videos and tutorials.

Back then when she was an IB student at Oasis and a basketball player, Hadia Ghaleb never had the time to think about fashion or to dress properly for that matter! She was always so involved in her athletic and academic life yet she knew she had it in her. Now she’s an Instagram sensation and an inspiration to many young girls out there; with thousands of followers, enjoying her everyday look and style.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BIGGEST GOAL FOR THE NEAR FUTURE- SAY IN 5 TO 10 YEARS, WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO BE? I honestly have no idea where I want to be in 5-10 years. All I know is that I want to describe myself using words like: successful, fulfilled and happy regardless of what it is that I’m doing.

WHEN DID IT ALL START? It all started when I went to college and every day I would go dressed up in a creative outfit. By that time, AUC’s fashion magazine had just started and the managing editor approached me to offer that I’d join their team and become a stylist. Later, I picked up a position at TeenStuff as the head of the fashion section. I started posting fashion tips and pictures simultaneously. Bit by bit I started to gain followers and things started to take a serious course until one of my biggest collaborations was with Vince Camuto when I promoted their opening in Cairo two months ago. WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR BLOG? Note that I don’t have a blog. I have a very active Instagram page. It’s efficient, convenient and accessible

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU ADVICE ASPIRING BLOGGERS/ INSTAGRAMERS TO DO/ USE? * If you don’t have something new and unique to offer, drop the whole thing. It’s time and consuming and really not worth the hassle. * Always post at peak hours. It’s absolutely useless to post at 2 am during week days when most of us are sleeping. * Keep them wanting more. Post teasers, details of the outfit and announce that more is coming up. * Always interact with your fans. Respond to their comments and even maybe like their pictures back. You’ll create an everlasting bond with them. * Have an identity and stick to it. Always keep it fun and entertaining. * Don’t underestimate the power of a nicely composed picture. Yes it’s about the fashion and the clothes, but when combined with a sunset or a sea, it’s a jackpot!

Sara

ISKANDER NAGUIB Sara Iskander Naguib, the designer behind SIN Haute Couture, has always been a fashion fanatic. After graduating from AUC majoring in Marketing, she realized it was time to follow her dream. Sara then took a fashion course in Egypt, certified from UK, which shifted her entire career path. She learned a lot while working with Marie Louis and that’s what gave her the confidence to start her own thing.

HOW DID THE CURRENT ECONOMIC SITUATION IN EGYPT AFFECT YOUR WORK? Despite the economic situation that Egypt is passing through, women always want to dress nicely and be unique specially that the last couple of years, there were lots of weddings and engagements taking place so the economic situation didn’t change much. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER GOALS. WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO BE IN 10 YEARS? I want SIN to be well known here in Egypt as well as having my own shop. Of course going international is in my long term plan. Having my own shop and doing fashion shows is on the top of my to-do list. I want to be that kind of a person who is able to impress people over there and proudly say that she is an Egyptian. Also, I plan to travel abroad, take some courses there to learn different techniques that will definitely widen my knowledge. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW ASPIRING DESIGNERS? Follow your dream, don’t give up! And don’t listen to those who make you feel you can’t, YOU CAN! I have come a long way to reach where I am at now. I got rid of the average life (that you have to find a real job) and I started to pursue my dream and to be the person I want to be. I worked hard for it, sacrificed my time, my money, all on my own and the most important thing is that I believed in myself!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER? There is no ceiling to creativity. You get inspired from everything around you, you have no rules!

TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. I’m a coach in insanity Egy (an intense 60 days workout program held by an Egyptian Fitness company called Transforma) I usually train at 7 am everyday and then do my own workout afterwards. Also I have a serious mental and physical addiction for Starbucks!

WHAT KIND OF WOMAN DO YOU TARGET? HOW WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE HER FEEL? I target women who seek boldness and sexiness. My designs are different, sexy and feminine. So usually women who wear SIN are appealing to look at. So if you want all of that, SIN is your answer!

Omnia WATANY

Omnia Watany is a 24 year old fashion designer who proved everyone she can make it on her own at such a young age! Her mother is the one person that always believed in her and inspired her to enter the world of fashion. She began with styling her friends’ outfits at first, then decided to start the clothing line Vorstin (“Queen” in Dutch) after a lot of good feedbacks and support from her friends.

when people didn’t go out as much as they used to therefore they didn’t shop as much either. But now it’s getting better. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER GOALS. WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO BE IN 10 YEARS? My goal is to attain a career where I can express my artistic talent and passion for fashion as well as open my mind in ways that are not possible in other jobs. In ten years, I’d like to see myself as an international designer who dresses up Hollywood stars and people from all over the world.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER? Well, my favorite thing would have to be being able to spend all day thinking and working on something I really enjoy and love. I honestly can’t get enough of this industry. As fun as this industry can be, it’s also really tough sometimes due to the competition there is. That’s how you have to be serious about it and very dedicated. WHAT KIND OF WOMAN DO YOU TARGET? HOW WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE HER FEEL? My woman is the young, fashionable, crazy and fun one who’s also outgoing! My goal as a fashion designer is to make this woman feel amazing about herself, smart, confident, and independent when she puts my dress on. HOW DID THE CURRENT ECONOMIC SITUATION IN EGYPT AFFECT YOUR WORK? Actually, compared to other industries, my work wasn’t that much affected. There was a time 51 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW ASPIRING DESIGNERS? You have to work in the industry for a long time before you do something on your own. Fashion is so saturated these days that you not only have to know the people you want to cater to, but fine-tune your unique selling point as well. It can get discouraging but it’s important to stay passionate and believe in what you have to offer. TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. Reham KANDIL

For Reham Kandil, it all started with her obsession with accessories and jewellery. She started her line “R-Chains Accessories” four years ago, making her own handmade accessories. Reham recently took a hammering workshop at Azza Fahmy Design Studio and she will soon be launching her new hammering line. We have so much faith in this talented young one! WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR DESIGNING JEWELLERY IN PARTICULAR? I started making accessories and selling them at college to my colleagues, then it started to hit me when the orders began to accumulate and especially when my mother and sister encouraged me to go professional and become an entrepreneur. My passion for jewellery is indescribable, I started with renovating my old accessories, and then I decided to begin from scratch.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT BEING A JEWELLERY DESIGNER? It’s like owning a treasure; I get to be creative, unique, and empower girls and women with different age groups by giving them the chance to change their look and beautify their outfits with their statement jewellery. DO YOU CATEGORIZE YOUR WORK? SAY SEASONALLY? OR DO YOU JUST FOLLOW THE TREND NO MATTER WHEN? You can say that I get inspired by the latest fashion trend, and customize them my own way depending on seasonality. My main target (competitive advantage) that I only make one item per design, so that every woman will feel special as she is the only one who owns that one piece. WHAT CAREER PLAN DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR LINE? Having my brand go GLOBAL. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE FOR ASPIRING JEWELLERY DESIGNERS? To get started, always develop, and never wait for tomorrow to achieve their dreams, and always remember that ‘consistency is the best policy’. TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. Well, I have a double life… a 10-6 corporate job, and jewellery designing. It’s very hectic specially when I’m also preparing for an event, go materials shopping, designing and implementing the product, photo shooting, editing, and maintaining CRM on all social media platforms, it’s a hard to manage job with also ensuring products delivery, and being the sole owner… sleepless nights and many orders to finish, along with brainstorming for a new line and keeping up with the fashion updates…in addition to my social life and family time! Stressful, but I’m loving it. 52 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

WHAT CAREER PLAN DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR LINE? Something very exciting Insha’ Allah! You’ll have to wait and see.

Nina

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE FOR ASPIRING JEWELLERY DESIGNERS? What makes a successful designer is the perseverance. No matter the obstacles, don’t get discouraged, where there’s a will, there’s a way! Also the best advice I can give an upcoming designer is to work with your hands, and not just commission a workman to create the piece you’ve designed. I create my pieces with my own hands; this allows me to get as creative as I can seeing the piece take shape in my hands. You can start out with an idea, and as you’re working with the material, the piece takes on another idea completely and you end up with something very special.

BAKRY

After studying Mass Communication, Nina Bakry worked in cinema production for 7 years before she realized how passionate and drawn she was to jewellery. She would often visit jewellery making workshops in khan el khalili to learn different jewellery making skills. It was not until she had her son that she decided to start exploring her first ever artistic passion, jewellery design. So she enrolled in to a Design Studio workshop where she learned more intricate jewellery making techniques. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR DESIGNING JEWELLERY IN PARTICULAR? I am inspired by anything and everything. I draw inspiration from the world around me, it doesn’t have to be something so obvious, it could be a moment or a feeling. I also love exploring the aesthetic of various cultures. I am intrigued by the visual representation of cultures throughout history.

TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. I LOVE GHADA ABD EL RAZIK!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT BEING A JEWELLERY DESIGNER? I love when inspiration hits and I bring idea to life. I also love seeing someone wearing one of my pieces and making it their own. DO YOU CATEGORIZE YOUR WORK? SAY SEASONALLY? OR DO YOU JUST FOLLOW THE TREND NO MATTER WHEN? I believe what sets me apart from the rest is that I don’t follow trends, I don’t create conventional pieces. I am trying to redefine what jewellery is and how it should be worn. 53 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

Batool AL DAAWI

HOW DID YOU REALIZE THIS WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? Though I always enjoyed taking photos, originally I thought I would focus on fashion design or fine arts, but when introduced to filmmaking during my last year in college, I fell in love with it and immediately knew this is the field I wanted to be in. So I decided to focus first on fashion films & fashion photography to combine my love for fashion, film & photography in one thing. DO YOU THINK, IN A COUNTRY LIKE OURS, PHOTOGRAPHERS HAVE A WELL-ROUNDED CAREER POTENTIAL? Yes, People are becoming more aware of different genres of photography and a lot of people are getting interested in the field. We actually have very good commercial photographers, events and wedding photographers who are doing very well, but regarding fashion photography it’s still growing. However, photography is not an easy job at all, especially in a country like Egypt where we’re not very stable yet, we have our ups and downs but there’s great potential.

During her last year of studying Mass Communication and Broadcasting, Batool Al Daawi got involved in creating a short film and that’s when she fell in love with the field and decided to take photography and film to a professional level. Now, the brilliant photographer is taking fashion photography to a whole new level with her creative eye.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART? I love the fact that you can freeze a moment and that you can travel through time; I believe a camera is a time machine. I also love that it’s very challenging and it’s a very tough job especially for a girl, as hectic as it is, it’s so much fun! My favourite part is that I can tell stories through fashion editorials and I get to work with extremely talented creative people who add to my work.

TELL US HOW IT STARTED. After working as a freelance photographer for a year, I opened my own company, Blow Creative in the Summer of 2012. Running this company, made me realize that there was a lot more that I needed to learn and experience, so I shut down for a while and travelled in early 2013 to study at The School of Visual Arts in New York; that was an experience that added a lot to my growth as a photographer. During my stay in New York, I was fortunate enough to have met and worked with an amazing inspirational photographer named Pino Gomes who helped in further developing my skills and knowledge of photography.

TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. I’m the worst person to stand in front of the camera.

Farah EL SAYED

This talent doesn’t need an introduction, just an eye to see the creativity behind Farah El Sayed’s styling work. For years now, fashion styling in Egypt has been all about mixing and matching clothes and outfits, but when Farah joined the industry, she changed that concept! She creates, embellishes, and makes everything with her own hands. We believe she can go international and be big in the next couple of years.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS PROFESSION? WHAT ATTRACTED YOU THE MOST?

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. I studied Fashion Design in London, and then I moved back to Cairo and found myself taking Fashion Styling courses at The Fashion Studio. That was it! I realized that I enjoyed the creative process of styling than the methods of designing that I studied. Yet, when I combined my knowledge of both together, the outcomes were unexpected. And that’s what I enjoy doing; the unexpected.

Using art and fashion to create a visual that tells a story with no form of text. I don’t think anything can beat that. WHEN YOU WORK WITH MULTIPLE ISSUES, HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE? Being a fashion stylist in Egypt, you rarely come across jobs that satisfy your hunger for creativity. But when these jobs come along, everything else falls after.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF STYLING TO YOU? Concept, consistency and creativity. DO YOU THINK THERE IS ROOM FOR STYLING IN THE EGYPTIAN FASHION INDUSTRY? OR DO YOU THINK PEOPLE STILL DO NOT GET IT? There’s so much room for originality. I think people need to really understand what it is. Fashion styling isn’t dress-up, it’s so much more than loving fashion or buying the latest trend. You need to be able to create an image that goes beyond fashion.

55 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

WHAT TRENDS IN STYLING ARE YOU SEEING RIGHT NOW? Sportswear brands like Nike and Adidas are crushing the fashion world right now. Having a plain basic tee is a necessity. Have a plain basic tee with a sports logo on it- that’s how it should be done. TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. Despite my style, I am a very shy person.

Soha

KHOURY

and Kryolan. Now, this artist has diplomas in HD, 3D, beauty, artistic, bridal, theatre, and special effect makeup and is one of the best in town right now! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING A MAKEUP ARTIST? The BEFORE and AFTER!! Although it’s a very exhausting job, the reaction on the client’s face when I’m done with her makeup is priceless! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE LOOK AND WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR STYLE THAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER MAKEUP ARTISTS? My signature look is to pop out my client’s features in a simple way yet not boring. After meeting with the client and getting to know her personality, I mix her style along with mine to come up with something we both like.

Soha Khoury, a Lebanese who’s been living in Egypt most of her life, has been working as a makeup artist for nine years now. It all started back in college, when she was still trying to figure out what she’s passionate about. After studying fashion design, permanent tattoo design, and makeup, she finally found herself enjoying makeup the most. After deciding this is what she wanted to do for living, Soha kept renewing her studies by taking courses in Atelier Paris, Makeup FOREVER Academy,

WHO ARE SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE INSPIRED YOUR WORK THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? What inspired me the most the incredibly glamorous looks on the Red Carpet where they always mix between the European’s simple look with the Middle Eastern one to come up with amazing results! Not to mention Audrey Hepburn’s makeup of course! IF YOU WEREN’T A MAKEUP ARTIST, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO DO? I would have probably been a psychologist, I love it and I always read about it. TELL US SOMETHING OUR READERS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU. In daily life, I don’t wear makeup!

Stefania Gulina

After years of experience worldwide, the Italian talent Stefania Gulina picked Egypt (or as she always say, Egypt picked her) to start her career path. Stefania is the founder of Italian Fashion Academy- the number one fashion institute in Egypt, a fashion designer, a wife and a mother! She’s one of the most influential names in the Egyptian fashion industry now, and today, Stefania tell us about her long journey to success. TELL US HOW AND WHEN IT ALL STARTED… Well, graduating as a designer, there has always been deep inside me the intention and the idea of creating my own fashion line, but sometime events and cross roads in your life just postpone what you have planned for or simply slightly change the direction of your dreams, so you happen to do something else while there is always that sparkle in your heart… and maybe when comes the time to finally put your ideas in paper you realize that waiting hasn’t been a bad idea because you have reached a different maturity so you able to express better what you have been dreaming of. WHAT MADE YOU PICK EGYPT TO START A CAREER? I did not pick Egypt intentionally. I always say Egypt picked ME! I got a job offer and at the same time I won a National competition in Italy, the choice was between an internship with Deanna Ferretti (a company producing wool products for Jean Paul Gautier) and the challenge of moving in a country like Egypt and manage the restructure of a school belonging to the Government. I chose what I thought would give me more experience and would help me to grow in career. Although sometimes I still wonder if I made the right one… 58 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

HOW DO YOU FIND TIME BETWEEN BEING A MOTHER, MANAGING THE ITALIAN FASHION ACADEMY AND WORKING ON YOUR OWN LINE SG COUTURE? Well it is hard giving all my energy to the four most important “Projects“in my life (as I include my husband) makes me neglect myself and my social life. But I just love it; I mean the whole package is heavy but what if I tell you that this is me and that I love all of it so much that I almost enjoy it! TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LINE… WHAT’S YOUR STYLE AND WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM? Well I get inspired from things around me and surely from my “Sicilianity”. I grew in an island made of sweat, sun, sea, mountains, dry fields and hard to manage nature. I have a deep hate relation with my land but yet such a deep love. My dresses express my land, a sensual woman but with deep respect for God, edgy dresses but with a sparkle of fairy tale; a woman who needs protection but at the same time able to run her own life. A woman who wants to change the future! WHO’S THE WOMAN WEARING SG COUTURE AND HOW DO YOU WANT HER TO FEEL? Women have so many sides. We are so fascinating

therefore I love women. I like to dress a woman who knows what she wants, who is not scared of the power she owns. A woman who is aware that we today represent the “Man of the Past”, I hope my words are clear. WHAT IS THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE THING ABOUT BEING AN ITALIAN DESIGNER IN EGYPT? Well the positive thing is the expertise I own. I’ve always been a person who likes to learn, who is always in search of something new and at the same time never scared of starting studying again, that’s why I decided to open an academy. Most of the people are scared of transferring their knowledge, but those people, I believe is only scared of loosing the few only things they know, while for me to transfer what I know is a joy, a mission and I’m never scared of a student becoming better than me. I would only be proud! The negative part, that I unfortunately go through everyday is the envy and the jealousy from the people in the field, I’m totally cut out from the Egyptian fashion scene by the people of the sector; they always feel I’m stealing something to them as a foreigner. But I would like to tell them that maybe I love this country more than them and as much as they are trying, I’m also trying to do something for Egypt to have a better place in this world.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS FOR BOTH YOUR CLOTHING LINE AND THE ACADEMY? I really do not know, I honestly had great plans, but the economical recessions we are going through, as well as the political instability of the past years, are not allowing us to make any plans. All my plans have changed so basically I’m just waiting. But maybe I can tell you my dream; to succeed in becoming the lead‫هرل‬ fashion education institution in the Middle East. DO YOU THINK THE ECONOMIC SITUATION IN EGYPT HAS AFFECTED THE INDUSTRY? Yes it has actually badly affected the industry and still is with this electricity problem! It has terrible effects on the production, making it impossible to overcome 4 years of instability. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO THE STUDENTS AT THE ACADEMY AFTER THEY GRADUATE? I always tell them to insist, if the talent is there, and even when things are hard they should always keep on trying. The fashion career is not a joke, yes it’s pleasant, more pleasant than engineering for example, but it is just as hard; you need to work really hard to reach your objectives. Meanwhile, aim for quality and always think “what if I sell my line in the Western world, would they buy it?” 60 IDENTITY SEPTEMBER 2014

what’s your favourite… INTERNATIONAL FASHION DESIGNER: On top of the list Valentino Garavani (I mean the old Valentino not the holding which is now managing the Valentino Brand), Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. EGYPTIAN FASHION DESIGNER: Well…uhm…a little difficult as I don’t think there is yet. There is a process of change the country is going through now. The old replaced by the new, this new which tends to copy here and there. But if I should express a preference, Yasmine Yeya. I cannot mention one of my students coz I love all of them…. JEWELRY DESIGNER: International Bulgari. Local, none. EGYPTIAN MODEL: Are there Egyptian professional models???? I love some I work with; I just adore them but I haven’t seen any Egyptian Professional Model yet. STORE: I’m afraid I don’t have one because of the very high prices.

REVIEW

ROY’S AT THE CAIRO MARRIOTT HOTEL

When we heard that our favourite country restaurant has decided to re-open their daily lunch open buffet, we couldn’t help but go check it out. Roy’s country kitchen restaurant at The Cairo Marriott Hotel in Zamalek has always been one of the best in town. As soon as we entered the place, we were quickly welcomed by the friendly staff and the restaurant manager, Waleed Sultan, who showed us to our table. Although the buffet was sitting there for a while when we arrived (since the daily lunch buffet is from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and we arrived at 3:00 pm), the food still looked fresh, delicious and hot. We started off with a salad plate and soup. There was a variety of salad options to chose from, but we were too excited (and hungry) that we decided to try them all! The cold cuts salad was my favourite, yet the mushroom, coleslaw and corn salads were as delicious as they looked. While enjoying our salads, we couldn’t help but notice the good music, which was of course country. The playlist selection was so good to the ear that I asked about some of the songs and artists several times. In fact, the entire atmosphere makes you feel in Texas or Louisiana.

We were already almost full from our salads before we even started our main courses. I went for the grilled salmon (best grilled salmon ever), penne pasta, and roasted mushroom, while my friend went for the meat balls, rice with vegetables, and sausages. Everything was so fresh and cooked amazingly that we asked to see the chef to complement him on the wonderful buffet. Chef Ashraf, Chef Mohamed, and Chef Marcello were all so nice to come to our table themselves and we had a little chitchat on the food. Just when we thought we could eat no more, a look at the dessert corner on the buffet made us change our minds. Being absolutely full, I decided to just have a light fruit salad for dessert, and my friend had the pumpkin pie and his exact words were “I don’t know what that is or what it’s made of, but it’s the best desert I’ve ever had!” Our overall experience was as great as we expected. We are so looking forward to going back there but next time we’ll be going for dinner instead since the restaurant opens from 12 noon and until midnight. I’ll be trying their exclusive and oh-so-famous big Country One Pound Burger, Black Angus Beef Fajita, the Mexican Beef Burritos and of course the “Hot Stone” dishes. Yum Yum I’m already hungry just speaking about it!
