I vividly recall those days as a young woman fresh out of college and ready to take on the world, with my head stuck in my books, studying for my Certified Fluid Power Hydraulic Specialist (CFPHS) certification. Gaining that certification provided me with knowledge and credibility in the industry and was my first step down the path to becoming one of the only woman-owned fluid power distributorships in the United States. I believe the International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) which offers the CFPHS and other certifications, played a strong hand in my personal development and guided my education in fluid power, affording me the opportunity to go to places in my career that a decade ago seemed to be only a dream. And in many ways, joining the IFPS Board of Directors has been a part of that dream coming full-circle, allowing me the opportunity to represent a wonderful cross-section of fluid power experts and promote the education of tomorrow’s professionals.

ROLE OF IFPS The IFPS was created with the intent to strengthen fluid power professionals through education, training, and certification. The current Board of Directors is comprised of fluid power professionals across a wide spectrum, from distributors and manufacturers, to end users of products and integrated systems. They also represent a wide cross section of industry, with experiences ranging from agriculture to aerospace, and everywhere in between. This diversity is what makes the IFPS Board of Directors vital to the fluid power community. The IFPS provides a forum of professionals from all industries that touch fluid power, including oil & gas, aerospace, agriculture, and beyond. In these discussions, we join together to share ideas and technologies that push the industry forward. While the applications across these industries differ, the fundamental principles of fluid power expressed in the certification courses remain the same and serve to unite us in our single purpose of fluid power education. Education and continual improvement are at the heart of the IFPS’ mission, and with goals that align so naturally with my own, joining the IFPS Board of Directors has been a natural fit.

ENSURING THE FUTURE OF FLUID POWER Despite the personal motivations for widening my horizons, my main interest in the IFPS remains the ability to give back. The IFPS shares a mission for education for which I have always had an intense passion. Given the opportunity, I have always lectured at universities, discussing topics of sales, fluid power, and, most especially, women in the workplace. It has been a not-so-secret goal of mine to introduce more women to fluid power, an industry which has been largely dominated by men since its inception. As a new member of the Board of Directors with a strong social media network, I hope to bring a fresh female perspective that will improve our outreach with a younger demographic. While the fluid power industry has grown and changed over the years, with new technology leading the forefront of innovation, it is imperative to disseminate the information about these developments, and work together to continue to make fluid power a competitive solution for new applications. There remains a definitive need to attract new talent and provide education and certification to qualify these individuals, and I look forward to working with the IFPS to achieve just that.

Global financial markets have been highly volatile over the past week, starting with U.S. equities following last Friday’s strong job numbers. The data showed manufacturers adding 15,000 workers on net in January, with 15,750 employees per month on average in 2017. The tight labor market conditions were further illustrated by solid wage growth, including 2.8 percent gains in the manufacturing sector over the past 12 months. In addition, as expected, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) chose not to increase short-term

rates at its January meeting, but it did suggest that “measures of inflation compensation have increased in recent months but remain low.” The FOMC is expected to hike the federal funds rate at its March 20–21 meeting. Strong economic growth, including job gains and wage pressures, combined to send a signal to financial markets that the Federal Reserve might be more hawkish on rates than some might have predicted, and that was enough to send equity markets sharply lower. For instance, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 4.8 percent so far in February (as of yesterday’s close), although, to be fair, it remains 36.3 percent higher than it was on Election Day in 2016. One could easily make the case that a correction was overdue. Fortunately, the financial market has—at least for now—shown signs of stabilizing after the freefall earlier in the week, but analysts suggest that we might be in for more volatility. Despite the stock market fluctuations of the past week, the fundamentals of the worldwide economy remain quite healthy, and more importantly, the outlook continues to be strong. The J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI pulled back slightly from December’s pace, which was the fastest since February 2011, but the good news is that exports strengthened in the latest figures to the best reading in nearly seven years—a sign that trade volumes have picked up as the international economy has continued to improve. rates since early 2011, with new orders slipping a little from a seven-year high but continuing to expand at a decent clip. Looking ahead six months, manufacturing leaders remained very upbeat in their global outlook, with that measure at an 11-month high. In January, all of the top-15 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods expanded. (There is no manufacturing PMI for comparison purposes for Belgium, which is our 10th-largest trading partner.) South Korea, which contracted ever so slightly in December, returned to positive growth again in January. As has been the case for several months, Europe once again dominated the list of top export markets with strong manufacturing growth, but other regions were also well represented. Those countries with the highest PMI readings in the sector in January included the Netherlands (a new all-time high), Germany, France, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. U.S.-manufactured goods exports rebounded strongly in 2017—a nice turnaround after global economic weaknesses in both 2015 and 2016.Using non-seasonally adjusted data, U.S.-manufactured goods exports totaled $1,094.73 billion in 2017, up 4.34 percent from $1,049.24 billion in 2016. This reflects better year-to-date figures to the top-six markets for U.S.-manufactured goods. The U.S. dollar has fallen 2.6 percent so far in 2018 against major currencies, according to the Federal Reserve, or 11.0 percent since the end of 2016, helping to improve international demand for U.S.-manufactured goods. Yet, despite the positive news for manufacturers, the U.S. trade deficit rose in December to the highest level since October 2008. Beyond that headline, however, goods exports, petroleum exports, service-sector exports and goods imports rose to all-time highs, highlighting the increase in global trade of late. As the NAM explained in public comments submitted to the Trump administration in May 2017, there are many factors that impact and cause changes in the U.S. trade deficit over time, including overall domestic conditions and standards of living, domestic consumption and purchasing compared with savings rates and the price of goods in the market, which is, in turn, impacted by exchange rates, domestic structural issues (e.g., taxation, regulation) and openness to international trade. Furthermore, when the U.S. economy has grown, the trade deficit has typically expanded as U.S. economic activity and consumption grow, while the trade deficit has shrunk when the U.S. economy has showed slower growth. Talks to modernize and update the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and address issues in the U.S.–Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) continued in January, as the Trump administration started

to make trade enforcement decisions. The NAM continues to push forward on a fully functioning Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank and to improve the operation of global institutions. The NAM also joined a new trade initiative— Trade for America.

The problem is that in cold weather the DEF starts to crystallize so it can’t move through the SCR. Smaller diesel engines use an electric heater to keep the DEF from freezing, but the energy cost of electric heating is prohibitive for heavy-duty engines with larger DEF tanks. Instead, designers take advantage of the coolant circuitry in these engines themselves to harness waste engine heat to warm the DEF. Tubing carries heated coolant from the engine through the urea tank, thawing the DEF back to a liquid state.

HEATING VALVES

But heated coolant can’t just run unchecked through the urea tank because DEF is sensitive to high temperatures as well. So, a temperature sensor in the DEF tank sends signals to a coolant control valve, like the Urea Tank Heating Valve (UTHV) from IMI Norgren, to open when the DEF is too cold and to close when it is warm enough. This regulates the flow of heated coolant through the tank, keeping the solution temperature within the optimal operating range. No one wants to wait in the cold with the engine running for the DEF to thaw. The high flow rate of the UTHV prevents the problem of slow starts in cold temperatures by allowing the heated coolant from the engine to flow to the DEF tank as quickly as it becomes available. When the DEF reaches the correct temperature, the UTHV is designed to close gently, preventing pressure spikes caused by fluid hammer from damaging upstream components or causing premature wear.

Diesel exhaust slush! That’s what you get when diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), an aqueous urea solution used in emission control systems, gets down to about 12 degrees F (-11 degrees C) or lower. In other words, a typical winter day at a mine in Wyoming, a farm in North Dakota or a construction site in New York. Off-highway or over-the-road, any modern medium- or heavyduty diesel engine uses a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions. SCRs work by injecting small amounts of DEF into the exhaust flowing from the engine. A chemical reaction of the DEF with the catalyst in the SCR converts the NOX in the exhaust to harmless nitrogen and water.

Robust aluminum construction and high-performance sealing materials make this valve stand up to cold operating conditions and minimize maintenance requirements.

The IMI Norgren UTHV combines the flexibility of a custom design with the practicality of a standard product. At its heart is a field-proven, high-flow, 2/2 normally closed diaphragm solenoid valve. Instead of mounting the valve in the header assembly where the sensors are, UTHVs can be mounted anywhere on the chassis. This gives designers flexibility in how they use precious space. It also means valves can be serviced or replaced simply, without the cost of disassembling the header unit. External mounting makes these valves easy to use in virtually any engine design, both for new equipment and retrofit.

HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED IN THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY? Well, I think I became involved in the fluid power industry when I was just a wee thing. My father was finishing up his degree in mechanical engineering, and, with every one’s busy schedules, I would sometimes end up going to class with him. His career path led in toward fluid power. In 2013 I entered the industry as well, through the shipping and receiving department for a hydraulic distribution/repair company in Broussard, LA.

WHY DID YOU FEEL IT WAS IMPORTANT TO BECOME CERTIFIED AS A HYDRAULIC SPECIALIST? Being that I usually had the most contact with customers (first point of contact because of will call) I felt it was necessary to become knowledgeable about the products we service. So, I started trying to figure out what the customer needed before having to interrupt someone else. (trying to make things more efficient, if you will). I remember getting excited when I identified the lip seal our customer needed for their P76 pump correctly.

WHAT WERE THE STEPS INVOLVED IN HYDRAULIC SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION? The first step was convincing myself I could do it. Second step was becoming a member of the International Fluid Power Society and to get all the study materials I needed to study for the exam. I then chose a test date and studied away.

Being that my father is a mechanical engineer, CFPE, CFPS, and on the board of the IFPS, I felt it would be foolish not to tap that resource. We decided on a study schedule that I was quite fond of, meeting once a week (twice as it got closer to test day) to go through the study manual and practice questions he would make for me. As a bonus, I would get a free meal out of it all!

HOW HAS CERTIFICATION HELPED IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE? I am still “green” in the industry, so when I get to use my fluid power certification, it is very exciting. The certification has really helped with selling components for these systems with better efficiency. I know what my customer is saying and can visualize their needs, enabling me to do further research from there.

HOW DO YOU THINK CERTIFICATION HAS HELPED (OR WILL HELP) IN YOUR CAREER? With such little experience in the industry, becoming certified has made a big difference. It helped me get the job I have today with Motion Industries. I believe that my certification will only enhance my opportunities to continue to grow. It is nice to work for a company that is supportive and has encouraged me to figure out what else I can do, geared toward maintaining and increasing my certification.

WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO BECOME CERTIFIED, AND WHY? I would definitely encourage others to become certified. It has opened a number of doors for me. I am currently studying for 2 additional certifications. Besides the obvious pros, there is another reason to become certified. With whatever career we choose to become a part of, we should try to be more knowledgeable about what we do. For me, I strive every day to learn more and more about the industry I am in, so as to best serve my customer base. Fluid power is a part of everything we use, whether it’s systems that built the cars we drive every day or we see it face-to-face working in plants and troubleshooting units. We can only benefit by having knowledge about how things run and getting to the root of problems.

Last week, I went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Council of Manufacturing Associations’ (CMA) leadership conference, held in conjunction with the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). As a CMA Board Director, these meetings give me the opportunity to connect with other association presidents and CEOs in the manufacturing industry, which can, and has, opened doors for NFPA partnerships. During the conference, Jay Timmons, CEO of NAM, spoke about the recent tax reform package and the possible implications it could have on manufacturing businesses. Prior to the bill’s passing in December 2017, NAM surveyed its membership asking what their businesses will do if the bill did indeed pass. Specifically, what would they do with their extra tax savings? The positive responses NAM received indicated that their manufacturers would buy new equipment, hire new talent, increase salaries/ benefits, etc. Now that the bill has become law, Jay has essentially issued a challenge to his members. To show that those intentions were real, it’s important for manufacturers to start moving forward with those plans. Listening to Jay speak prompted me to ask myself: What will NFPA members do with any tax savings they now receive? Will they follow the same suit as the surveyed NAM members? Will NFPA members upgrade their equipment and expand their facilities? Will they hire more people to work in the fluid power industry? And if so, where will they find the talent they need? And that got me thinking about the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. How many of these members are aware that the NFPA Foundation is working hard to create more educated fluid power technicians and engineers, and then connect them to NFPA members so that they can find rewarding fluid power careers? Do they know that our Foundation’s workforce development programs have the power to bring two-year and four-year engineering students directly to them, allowing them greater access to the kind of candidates they are looking for? Workforce development is crucial to NFPA’s mission of strengthening the fluid power industry. Milwaukee, WI – February 28, 2018 — The NFPA Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge is heating up! Right now, teams are building, testing, and adjusting their vehicles. By March, students prepare for the Final Competition Event, which this year is being held April 12-13 at Danfoss in Ames, Iowa. Teams will present their design process and demonstrate the safe function of their vehicles on April 12. The Final Competition will take place on April 13 and includes three judged races: a Sprint Race, an Efficiency Challenge Race, and an Endurance Challenge Race. The event also includes nightly networking events as well as a Final Dinner and Award Ceremony at Iowa State University. Students started on their project in September or October. Usually coinciding with the university’s senior capstone design course, students gain knowledge in fluid power components, circuits, and systems, as well as their use in controlling force and motion. The Vehicle Challenge strives to promote original thinking in a competitive setting by combining two technology platforms that are not normally associated with one another—bicycles and fluid power. A fluid-powered bicycle presents engineers with a familiar yet challenging platform for change. THE QUESTIONS

HOW HAVE ELECTRONICS INFLUENCED THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY SO FAR, AND DO YOU VIEW THIS AS A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE DEVELOPMENT? GEIGER: There’s a heavy push on robotics and autonomous-type vehicles these days. Robotics have traditionally been inside a plant and closely controlled. Now robots are leaving the plants, working outside in difficult unstructured environments, and working alongside humans in areas such as agriculture, construction and mining. At Moog this means that the machines need to be aware of their surroundings and to make intelligent decisions about what to do and how to do it in the most efficient way. These requirements drive a need for a whole array of perception sensors, such as cameras, radar and Lidar, as well as more traditional sensors. These sensors are used at the machine and axis levels to monitor performance. Then computing platforms are needed to process all this data and make decisions. Our work is going well beyond just closing the loop on a hydraulic system to also figuring out how to make these devices interact with their environment with reduced human input. The opportunity is there to apply intelligent motion control, systems integration, and safety, in entirely new spaces. ZUMBUSCH: Electronics have changed the landscape tremendously, particularly over the last few years. This has allowed products with on-board intelligence, such as Eaton’s CMA valves, to provide huge improvements in load and motion control but also to take on additional functions. Now, built-in sensing allows machines to interpret upstream fluid signatures and communicate critical information, such as machine performance and prognostics for maintenance of large, complex systems. ZILIOLI: The introduction of electronics in the fluid industry is definitely a positive development. Mechanics began to be influenced by electronics in the early 1990’s, and the term mechatronics, which finds a synergy between the worlds of mechanics and electronics, was created. In the last 15 years, fluid systems have been integrating more and more with electronic components, thus a new term, fluidotronics, has been created. All this is to improve control and positioning by ensuring precise, timely, and especially, repeatable results. Think of a hydraulic circuit: the pressure transducers provide information about the pressure at the pump, and the more rapid the movements-- with a ramp for fluid acceleration and one for deceleration-- the more important is the accuracy of the components in question. Reading the pressure in real time in this case becomes crucial. The position feedback of a hydraulic piston has also become essential information. The repeatability of movements must be guaranteed as the oil flow rate varies, depending on the temperature. Since the oil is a relatively incompressible fluid, it is easy to control the position of a piston of an hydraulic cylinder. Recent technology is now leading us to transfer the concept of controlled positioning to pneumatic cylinders. Once the target position is reached, the two areas of the pneumatic piston are pressurized to balance the forces, and only the high quality of today’s low-cost position and pressure sensors can provide the feedback necessary to maintain the locked position. 2018 ELECTRONICS Q+A WHAT ARE THE COST SAVINGS/ BENEFITS TO UTILIZING MORE ELECTRONIC CONTROLS IN FLUID POWER SYSTEMS? GEIGER: Efficiency, safety and productivity. More intelligent systems, using more electronic controls, enable the creation of systems that

are more efficient, productive and safer. First, efficiency can be improved by monitoring and controlling the energy usage throughout the machine, as well as by optimizing the motion profiles of the vehicle movements. Efficiency is an ever-important topic as engine emission standards become stricter. Next, productivity can be improved by automating some tasks that allow the human operator to focus on the more cognitively chal-

lenging parts of the job that humans excel at and machines do not. This increases the productivity, makes the job more satisfying for the operator and overcomes ergonomic problems that operators encounter from repetitive movements. Finally, safety is critical when adding automation to a machine. Consider the safety of the operator and the safety of people who work around this machinery. An intelligent control system allows engineers to tie in a variety of sensors like Lidar, radar, cameras that augment the operator’s field of view. Safety critical systems are a key capability of Moog, and we are focused on how to incorporate new technology safely. ZUMBUSCH: One of the biggest benefits OEMs are seeing is improved productivity and management of how the machines do their work. With electrohydraulics (EH) you can now profile how a device is moved to even make it more gentle on things like bushings and structures. As EH is used on machines, it now opens the opportunity to add electronic boxes like Eaton’s HFX controllers and create some really advanced functionality and coordination between multiple machine operations. Another benefit is the time necessary to commission machines. Now, instead of swapping different spools and orifices in an attempt to get the performance they want, a customer can now spend a little time on a laptop and design the way they want the function to work and be done in 1/10th the time.

ZILIOLI: Recently I was in India, a country where there is continuous development of infrastructure and road, rail, and river communication networks. I met an old researcher from a leading manufacturer of excavator and pick & place vehicles, who, in recent years, had created his own company with his children. He told me that they were looking for a solution that would allow dealers to increase safety. Excavators were used by personnel that did not have much professional training. But did the dealers only want to prevent inexperienced operators from doing harm to themselves or others? No, they were also looking for a way to control and stop the vehicle when the operator was using it improperly. For example, excavators were not only used to transfer or remove soil, but also to split and crush rocks, and this reduced the life of the bucket and all mechanical and hydraulic components of the excavator. This was the first time that not only did we want to safeguard human life by, for example, avoiding the vehicle tipping over, but we also wanted to take care of the proper use of machinery. My suggestion was in that case to detect if pressure peaks were too frequent and too close together. If they were, it meant that the excavator was being used in an extreme manner, like a pneumatic hammer.

This real-life story is to show that in addition to the well-known benefits of using electronic controls, man/machine safety is becoming increasingly necessary and urgent. Within 10 years, robots or cobots (instruments that interact with employees within the company) will replace human beings in fatiguing, repetitive work; the farmer will no longer have to spend his time on the tractor to plough or treat the agricultural fields. There will be autonomous vehicles, and the first of these are already operational, tractors that no longer have the operator’s cabin, a steering wheel, or an accelerator and can move without the need for constant human control. ZILIOLI: Support the development of this integration, and thus create fluidotronics. Large manufacturers of hydraulic and pneumatic components have been doing this for a couple of decades, and this is one reason they maintain their leadership. Companies that now adopt these new solutions will need a very steep learning curve. In the next 10 years, communication between the various electronic components will become increasingly digital; therefore, companies must invest

in the training of personnel who will then design, install and maintain the new systems or plants that will increase efficiency by communicating with each other, ideally starting from the purchase order of materials, to the storage, processing and shipping of the finished materials.

WHAT SHOULD FLUID POWER PROFESSIONALS AND COMPANIES DO TO PREPARE FOR AND EMBRACE THIS INTEGRATION? GEIGER: Applications are becoming more multi-disciplinary systems problems, not just hydraulic control. So we all need to educate ourselves about the new sensors and computing platforms that can be used to build better and safer machines. For example, Moog is looking at perception systems and how to integrate these with motion control systems. Understanding how this integration impacts safety is a key piece of this problem that must be understood and thought about from the earliest stage of development. As workers encounter collaborative robots, safety requirements take on a completely new level of importance. Moog’s aerospace flight control heritage has equipped us with an understanding of the various levels of redundancy necessary for electronic systems that interact with humans. Another capability to understand and embrace is additive manufacturing. As hydraulically powered robots enter uneven, open terrains, they have to be lightweight, unlike the large, heavy robots that move short distances inside a factory. Additive manufacturing is one way to keep the weight down in developing the kind of robots that will have to keep pace with and work alongside humans. ZUMBUSCH: One of the biggest things an OEM can do is look at the opportunity from a system perspective and consider how the entire circuit could be improved with the move to electrohydraulics (EH). There are a lot of great valve choices out there that offer a lot of benefits for the taking. Taking on EH has been getting easier and easier too, as suppliers make the interfaces simpler to work with and more intuitive. CIRCLE 168

DESIGNING A

Reliable + Efficient VACUUM SYSTEM

A vacuum system is made up of more than a pump, and its design is dependent on the application. However, all applications need reliable and efficient designs, so to illustrate how to achieve that, we will focus on two types of applications and systems.

Applications for vacuum pumps can be either nonporous or porous. Nonporous applications use sealed systems with a minimal amount of air passing through them. Such systems are usually easier to design than non-sealed, porous systems. One example of an application for a nonporous system is the evacuation of a reservoir or vacuum tank.

SEALED SYSTEMS ARE SIMPLE The design of a non-porous system hinges on three main considerations: the volume that is to be evacuated; the desired level of vacuum in the tank, and the time it takes to evacuate the tank. The first design step is therefore to calculate the total volume, which includes not only the space within the vacuum tank, but also all the connections and filters. Next, the required vacuum level is set, and then the evacuation speed. The flow rating of a vacuum pump, usually measured in normal liters per minute (Nlpm) or standard cubic feet per minute (scfm), will help to determine the evacuation speed. The more free air a pump moves, the faster the evacuation time. The volume in the system and the vacuum level are factors determining a pump’s flow rate, with larger volumes and deeper vacuum levels taking longer to evacuate.

POROUS SYSTEMS ARE TRICKIER Applications that require a porous vacuum system, such as the handling and lifting of corrugated cardboard boxes, rely on more elaborate designs. In a porous system, atmospheric air passes through objects at the vacuum point, and the important factor is the amount of vacuum flow (Nlpm or scfm) a pump can generate, as this has to compensate for the leaked air to sustain a given vacuum level. The energy consumption of a porous system increases asymptotically with the vacuum level. This means that a doubling of the vacuum level might require as much as ten times the amount of energy. Therefore, vacuum levels usually need to be kept at a minimum. In many lifting and handling systems this can be accomplished with a larger diameter suction cup because larger lifting areas will increase the lifting capacity and reduce the required vacuum pressure.

REDUCE THE VOLUME AND SAVE ENERGY Another way in which energy can be saved is to reduce the volume in the vacuum system. The inside diameter of the vacuum hose obviously matters, as an unnecessarily large hose will add extra volume, slowing down the evacuation. However, if the hose is too small, the flow is restricted and the pump must work harder. A good rule of thumb is to choose a hose size that matches the pump’s vacuum port. The volume that needs to be evacuated can also be reduced effectively by placing the pump closer to the vacuum point. In addition to cutting energy costs, this also shortens the system’s response time. This is why a decentralized vacuum system with several smaller pumps close to where the vacuum is needed is preferable to a centralized system using one

centrally placed pump. In a centralized system, there will be great losses due to the long hoses, bends, fittings, valves and filters, and these losses have to be compensated for by using a larger vacuum pump.

Various vacuum filters can be placed between the pump and the vacuum point. Different types of filters include units with clear plastic bowls in which

Vacuum systems are different from compressed air systems, which are far less sensitive to losses. Hence, just as high voltage is used for long distance transport of electricity and then converted to low voltage as late as possible to minimize losses, compressed air should be converted to vacuum flow as late as possible in the system.

A decentralized vacuum system

Another disadvantage of a centralized system is that, if the pump fails, the entire operation is down until repairs are made. Because there is only one pump, the maintenance is relatively easy. A decentralized system often requires synchronized operation, which potentially involves more maintenance. However, because the components of decentralized systems operate independently, faulty pumps can be serviced while the rest continue to run undisturbed. CONTROL DEVICES CAN ALSO HELP The system can also be fitted with various energy-saving devices, including signaling controls. Such controls improve the efficiency by either signaling a certain vacuum level or by turning off a pump. Vacuum switches are common control devices that send either electric or pneumatic signals. In a typical nonporous system, the vacuum switch is set to a certain vacuum level. When the pump reaches that level, the switch sends a signal to a solenoid valve that turns off an

Control and Prognostic of Electro-Hydraulic Machines PROJECT LEADER: ANDREA VACCA, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, AGRICULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTION: MAHA FLUID POWER RESEARCH CENTER, PURDUE UNIVERSITY

PURPOSE This study aims at combining advanced control techniques of hydraulic control systems, which are enabled by the use of modern electro-hydraulic (EH) components, along with system diagnostics and prognostics. Despite the generality of the proposed approach, for modeling and experimental validation purposes, the research takes as reference the case of a hydraulic crane for truck applications. For this reference case, the team at Purdue has already developed controllers for the EH valves which are able to reduce the oscillation at the booms up to 70%, as well as controllers suitable for the use of energy-efficient independent metering valves. The research will demonstrate how the parameters calculated in real-time by these controllers can also be used for monitoring the health of the hydraulic components of the entire hydraulic system, for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The combination of advanced control techniques and Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) algorithms proposed in this research will help to advance the field of EH machines. Future machines using combined EH control and PHM algorithms will leverage the known advantages of advanced EH control (increased safety, higher productivity, reduced energy consumption), but will also use condition-based maintenance, which is more cost-effective than current time-based (or failure-based) maintenance approaches.

PROGRESS This project has focused on investigating advanced EH control techniques for oscillation damping and independent metering control, based on the real-time evaluation of cost functions from pressure sensors installed on the machines. The value of the cost function was proven to have additional significance with respect to faults occurring at the hydraulic components of the system. With heuristic data-driven methods, based on Neural Networks, the team has worked with the minimum number of additional temperature and pressure sensors in the system that allows for a complete identification of faults occurring at the supply pump, at the hydraulic control valves and at the linear actuators. Recent results from a detailed simulation model of the hydraulic crane showed the effectiveness of the proposed PHM method with a limited number of pressure sensors (two for each hydraulic function) and temperature sensors.

NEXT STEPS The current activities of the project focus on an extensive validation of the PHM algorithm on the instrumented hydraulic crane available at the Maha Fluid Power Research Center, in order to reproduce faults experimentally. Next steps also involve the formulation and implementation of stochastic approaches for the prediction of the remaining useful life of the hydraulic components.
