Q: Why does my (fill in the blank) keep dying?
A: If a plant dies, it’s telling you
something. You might want to replace it once, just to make sure the first plant wasn’t damaged in some way. But if the replacement also dies, that plant clearly isn’t suited to that location. Move on, and plant something else.

11 Facts You Didn’t Know About Paint arizonapaintingcompany.com
Paint has been around for thousands of years, and has gone through many different transformations throughout its history. Paint color symbolizes many things in cultures throughout the world, and has been made up of a variety of materials. From cave dwellers in pre-historic times to royalty in the medieval era to the modern-day family trying to pick that perfect color for their living room, paint has been ubiquitous in everyday life for some time now. Here are 11 facts that you didn’t know about paint to get you inspired for your next project. 1. The first ready-to-use paint was brought to us by none other than Sherwin-Williams, in 1866. Previously, paint had to be mixed
manually, using a variety of materials: milk, olive oil, eggs, lime and other earth pigments, linseed oil and many more. Later on, the company hit another milestone with the invention of a re-sealable tin can, so painters could preserve their paints. 2. Paint has been around for thousands of years – about 30,000 years, to be more exact. Cave dwellers used paint to draw representations of life in those times, many of which are still visible today. 3. Red doors have meant several things throughout history and different cultures. In the early pioneer days in the U.S., a red door typically meant that a house was a safe spot to lay your head for the evening and rest from a long day’s travel. In the Civil War, a red door meant that the house was a safe home for slaves trying to escape to the North in the Underground Railroad. In Scotland, a red door has traditionally meant that their home is mortgage-free. It was a celebration of owing no debt on the house. In China, a red door symbolizes good luck, and doors are often repainted red to celebrate the New Year. 4. In the 1940s, linseed oil (which was a substance commonly used to make paint) was in short supply due to World War II. Because of this shortage, chemists discovered how to make artificial resins, which made paint cheaper and gave the color more durability. 5. The White House was originally white because of the lime-based white wash that protected the inner stone surface. It wasn’t painted white until after the British set fire to it Continued on Page 8

11 Facts You Didn’t Know About Paint Continued from Page 6 in 1814. To paint the entire outer surface of The White House would take about 570 gallons of paint. 6. According to Zillow research, there are particular colors you can paint rooms in the house that can significantly increase its value. Powder blue and periwinkle bathrooms can increase the value of your home a whopping $5,000 over average, whereas homes with white or off-white bathrooms typically sell for $4,000 under average. That’s a potential gain of $9,000 by choosing one color over another in 1 room. Houses with blue kitchens can sell for about $2,600 more than those with yellow kitchens. Brown living rooms are very popular with buyers today, and can bring the sale price of a home up $1,800 over average. Finally, many buyers are partial to “greige” exteriors (a mixture of light gray and beige hues), and sell for around $3,500 more than a brown or taupe house. This might give you something to think

about before you list! 7. The Golden Gate bridge’s iconic “international orange” was strategically chosen for it to stand out in the city’s ever-present fog. Originally, the US Navy wanted the bridge to be painted yellow and black, so passing ships could easily see the bridge. 8. According to the EPA, the US uses about 1.57 billion gallons of paint each year—that’s a lot of color! 9. The US banned the use of lead paint in homes in 1978. Lead paint is toxic and can be very harmful to children who are exposed to it, causing damage to the brain and other vital organs. Children who have lead poisoning often get it through putting a leadcontaminated object into their mouths or by eating a peeling paint chip from the wall. This can also happen if a child handles something containing lead, then puts their hand in their mouth. If your home was built before 1978, you may want to take precautions, such as wiping down surface walls, mopping floors, and dusting regularly. 10. The best time to paint your home is when it’s around 60-70 degrees outside. This will ensure that the paint won’t dry too quickly (when it’s too hot,) or take a long time to dry (when it’s too cold.) 11. Different paint colors are said to affect your mood. For instance, greens and blues are reportedly good for stress relief, and are best used in the bedroom. Vibrant colors, like oranges and reds, are known to invigorate and wake you up, and might be best used in an office or a living room.

If you’ve never grown microgreens, now is the time. These little bursts of flavor pack a substantial nutritional punch, and you can grow them in the light of a south facing window in as little as two weeks. Don’t despair if you don’t have ample natural light. LED grow lights continue to get more affordable and more effective. It all starts with high quality, fresh seeds. Buy in quantity and, to get the most nutrition out of the smallest space, don’t skimp on the sowing. Start by filling a tray or other low container with about two inches of pre-moistened soilless mix, and then sprinkle the seed evenly over the mix. There’s no need to cover small seeds. In fact, you’ll likely get more consistent germination by leaving them uncovered. Water gently, and keep the soil consistently moist. When the tiny plants look and taste ready, cut
the tender stems just above the soil line with scissors. Some microgreens go from seed to plate in little more than a week.
Five to Try
Broccoli can be sown thickly. It has a mild cabbage flavor, and is nutrient dense. Cress microgreens are peppery and delicate, and super fast to grow. Pea shoots are sweet and crunchy, and taste like young snow peas. Excellent in salads! Radish microgreens have a nice crunch. Daikons, particularly, have an intense radish flavor. Sunflower microgreens make an excellent snack. Soak seeds for four hours before The Valley’s only locally TheLehigh Lehigh Valley’s only locally owned stateplanting.

Microgreens vs. Sprouts: What’s the difference?
Microgreens are delicate bursts of flavor, ready to cut just 1 to 3 three weeks after you plant them. Sprouts are seeds that have germinated without soil. Harvested in just a few days, they impart flavor and crunch to sandwiches and salads, or interesting texture to cooked dishes. Sprouts require very little light.

Insulation
Should You Go For a Single Pane or Double Pane Window?
Energy Efficiency
moving.com
Cost
Because single pane windows only have one layer of glass, they’re not as good as double pane windows at insulating your home from outside noises and temperatures. If you live somewhere quiet with temperate weather, then you may be just fine opting to save money with single pane windows. However, if you’re concerned about noise and other external factors affecting the comfort of your home, you should probably go with double pane, though it’s important to note that even a double pane window isn’t going to be able to completely block out all outside noise and temperatures.
Let’s start with cost, since that’s definitely going to be one of the primary deciding factors when you’re choosing between single pane or double pane windows. According to HomeAdvisor, the initial purchase and installation cost of a single pane window is about $50 to $75 per window, while a double pane window runs closer to $350 to $400 per window. Double pane windows certainly require a larger upfront investment. That being said, they’re often recommended because of the advantages they provide—including cost savings later on related to better energy efficiency. Double pane vinyl or wood-framed windows are said to reduce energy usage by as much as 24 percent in cold climates during the winter and up to 18 percent in warm climates in the summer when compared to single pane windows. To get those savings though you’ll have to make a pretty major investment, since it will require that all of the windows in your home are double pane and not just a few of them.
Heat gain and loss through windows is responsible for 25 to 30 percent of a home’s heating and cooling usage. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why double pane windows, with their added insulation due to an extra pane of glass and the option for a layer of insulating, non-toxic gas, are a good option for reducing energy waste. This reduction in heat gain and loss can save you hundreds of dollars a year, over time offsetting the cost of purchasing and installing the double pane windows in the first place.
Replacing Single Pane Windows with Double Pane
Double pane windows are pretty much standard now in newer homes, including new construction builds. If you’re living in or have recently purchased an older home though and the windows haven’t been replaced recently, there’s a good chance they’re single pane. Most homeowners and renovators have limited budgets to work with, and need to decide if single pane or double pane windows are going Continued on Page 14

Growing Food Indoors Single Continued from Page 10 Sanitize or sterilize sprouting containers. To sterilize, boil containers for 10 minutes. Sanitize by soaking containers for at least 5 minutes in a solution of 3 tablespoons bleach per quart of water. Rinse sprouting seeds two to three times a day with clean water, completely draining after each rinse. When your sprouts are ready, do a final rinse in a clean bowl and remove any floaters.
Tips for Growing Herbs Indoors
Light is paramount to success when growing herbs indoors. Even with a south-facing window, light can be insufficient. You can provide your herbs with the 14 hours of light that they require for good growth with a simple setup using energy efficient LED grow lights and an inexpensive timer. Choose fast growing herbs, such as basil, cilantro, dill, and arugula, and harvest them young. Plant each herb in its own container, as growth habits vary. Sow seeds every few weeks for a continuous harvest.
or
Double Pane
Continued from Page 12 to be their best option if replacements are required. You can add additional insulation to single pane windows without replacing them, such as by weather stripping them. But while that might reduce your heat gain and loss to some degree, it’s not going to equal the energy efficiency gains of double pane windows. For that reason, it’s worth taking a chunk out of your budget to invest in the double pane option, especially if you intend on selling the home in the near future. Today’s buyers have higher expectations around energy efficiency, and the market value of your property may suffer if you don’t go the double pane route. So while it might be tempting to save money and replace single pane with single pane, your return on investment will be lower, and you may even find it harder to sell.

How to Protect a Vacant Home After a Move moving.com
It doesn’t always work out that the day you move out of your old home is the day the new owner moves in. But if there are going to be days (or weeks, or months) in between tenants, how do you make sure your property is safe?
Keep your utilities running
It’s not ideal to be paying utility costs on a home you don’t live in, but it’s still a good idea. You don’t have to keep the gas and the wifi on, but you’ll want electricity and, if you’re moving in the winter and live in a colder climate, heat. The latter helps keep your home safe from things like burst pipes, while the former will help you make it appear like someone is around—even when they’re not (more on that next).
Convert Your Outdoor Space Into A Screen Room Or Florida Room
Don’t want to keep the heat blasting? A programmable thermostat will allow you to control the temperature in your vacant home remotely so that you can turn the heat up a few degrees overnight or on particularly chilly days and keep it low at all other times.
Let there be light
Set your lights to a timer switch, which you can get at most home improvement stores. These turn your lights on automatically at a pre-set time (and then turn them off later) to give the appearance of occupancy in your vacant home. You don’t have to install them in every room in the house, but do employ a few throughout the property, particularly in rooms that face out onto the street. Install one on an outdoor light as well, such as your porch light or the lights around the garage. You should also have some additional exterior lighting that serves to illuminate what’s going on outside and deter criminal activity. In addition to (or lieu of) having exterior lights on a timer switch, consider installing a motion sensor switch that will turn on your home’s outside lights when someone gets close.

Keep any existing security systems running
Don’t cancel your alarm system contract just yet. If you need to protect a vacant home, the more security you have in place the better. While a lot of today’s most popular security systems are designed to be taken with you when you move, opt to keep it in place for now with a plan to acquire it later on. This way, you’ll know right away if something is going on. A security system will also act as a deterrent a lot of the time, sending off would-be criminals who don’t want to take the risk of setting off an alarm.
Hang up some dummy cameras
If you don’t have a security system in place and don’t want to invest in one just for a vacant property, then you could always install some fake video cameras around the exterior of your home. These dummy cameras usually have a red blinking light that makes them appear more real, and they give the illusion that you have more security in place than you really do.
Don’t neglect yardwork
Overgrown grass, a sea of weeds, or a driveway that never gets shoveled all suggest to outsiders that a home may be vacant. Hire someone who can come by and keep the outside looking nice, such as a landscaper in the summer and a snow shoveler in the winter.
Hide the lockbox
If your home is still for sale when you move then chances are you’ll have a lockbox on the property that lets in buyers and their agents for showings. Generally, these lockboxes are attached to the front door or some other highly visible area near the entrance. But it’s all too easy for someone to make the connection between the lockbox out front and the lack of activity that appears to be taking place in and outside the home. Instead of keeping the lockbox so visible, attach it around the side of house, where someone wouldn’t be likely to see it if they were looking at your home from the street. Continued on Page 19

Q: What’s the best tree to plant? A: This, of course, depends on your climate and the size of your yard. But, in general, you’re likely to get the most enjoyment from trees that naturally stay rather small. Because we’re a mobile society, most people don’t get a chance to watch a tree grow to maturity. But if you plant a small tree, maybe you can watch it grow up. Semidwarf fruit trees are really rewarding. So are small flowering trees, like redbud and golden chain tree. These trees give you more than just shade.
