VICTOR MANUEL GENTLEMEN’S BARBERSHOP DELIVERS STYLE WITH CARE

LIFESTYLE / PEOPLE & PLACES

Joseph Bass once turned a hospital resident into a friend and client by complimenting his stylish GQ look – but telling him bluntly that his hair looked like, well, not good.

Turns out, the man was forced to go to Philadelphia for a good cut, so he gave Bass a try.

“He went to a wedding that weekend, and his mother said, ‘Whoever’s cutting your hair, you keep him,’” Bass says now.

That friend and other backers, including a Hershey surgeon, inspired the opening of Victor Manuel Gentlemen’s Barber Shop in Hershey, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year.

“A lot of people were instrumental in me doing what I’m doing,” Bass says.

From an end suite in Briarcrest Square, Victor Manuel’s Gentleman’s Barber Shop offers a place for stylish hair and beard treatments, customer experience, and a caring community.

Joseph Victor Manuel Bass IV learned to cut hair from his grandfather, a World War II veteran and a steelworker in their northwestern Pennsylvania hometown of Meadville. Bass studied biology at Syracuse University, where he would cut the hair of his friends.

He came to Harrisburg in 2006, opening a medical lab before working at area hospitals. He was also cutting hair at a barbershop. While he was recovering from a ruptured bicep, his hospital resident friend asked why he would want to return to work. The friend took Bass to Briarcrest Square and said it was the place to put his shop.

“I was blown away,” Bass says. “I said, ‘I can’t do this.’ And he said, ‘Why not?’”

At first, Bass was the only barber in the five-chair shop, working 14-hour days seven days a week because success—and paying the bills—fell on his shoulders.

“I’ve always had a vision,” he says. “My vision is a quality cut and client experience. You can’t put a price on quality.”

Today, Bass leads a team of seven barbers.

“We have a Ukrainian-Egyptian barber,” he says. “We have a Cambodian barber. We have a Puerto Rican-African American barber, and we have a white barber. We can cut all types of hair.”

One barber is autistic, accommodated with his own private space for giving clients their amazing cuts.

“Everybody loves him,” Bass says. “He is such an amazing human being. I’ve never met a more pure person. He keeps us pure. We love him. He cuts all of our hair. He’s elite, and he has the confidence now.”

Clients come from all around central Pennsylvania and beyond, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. One client from North Carolina texted a picture from Jordan—the country—where he was attending a wedding and met another Victor Manuel client.

JUNE 2023 | SUSQUEHANNA STYLE 13

“It shows me the impact we have,” Bass says. “I want people to look good and feel good. I love taking a head of hair and turning it into something amazing.” Services include haircuts, color enhancements, beard trims, and pampering for the skin with facials, scrubs and masks, and hot towel shave.

“Men are starting to care more about skin,” Bass says. “We get that towel hot. We lather the face up, we lean you back, and we put that towel on your face. It’s relaxing. At the end of the day, it’s self-care.”

Manicures and pedicures could be coming soon, at the request of customers. Bass polls customers and follows trends to keep services and styles up to date. It helps having three kids, including a teenage son and daughter. When he bought a new pair of Air Max 95 shoes recently, his son gave them a thumbs-down.

“So I did an Instagram poll, and he was right,” Bass admits.

Miguel Guibas is the shop’s longest-serving barber. The experience has been “life-altering,” he says.

“It’s all positive vibes and good feels,” Guibas says. “We get everything from doctors and surgeons to pilots. They talk to us. They love us. They grow great relationships with us. They are people who care about your time and what you do, and it feels good to give them your all.”

Every day, Bass thinks about his father and grandfather, who died within one month of each other and four months before the birth of his first child, now a 17-year-old football player being recruited by Division I schools.

“It was like the rebirth of both of them through him,” Bass says. “I pray. I talk to them still. I can only hope they’re proud of me.”

Bass is a believer in local business. The team goes out together after work, dining at Hershey restaurants. He loves the atmosphere, sounds, and smells of Hershey, and he admires Milton Hershey for the caring community he built.

“I admire him to the point where I want to leave my mark on Hershey,” Bass says. “That’s the path I’m trying to take. I feel like I’m put here to leave something greater. I don’t know what it is, but I have a purpose.”

Men’s Mental Health Is Changing Course

In late March, English soccer star Ben Chilwell admitted to receiving mental health care after missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to a torn hamstring. In doing so, he validated the act of getting help. This is just one example of many in which men are coming forth about their mental health. However, it’s up to all of us to look out. The onus is not simply on individual men to change. It’s also on health service providers and society as a whole.

Keep an eye out for these five ways we’re understanding men’s mental health differently these days, whether it’s to prevent or heal mental health issues in yourself or a loved one.

Stigmatized issues are normal

According to Mental Health America, five major issues impacting men include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and eating disorders. Neal Holmes, primary therapist and supervisor for other pre-licensed clinicians at Sun Point Wellness Center, says body issues for men are particularly common, noting that men tend to look at their bodies as their masculine portrayal in the world. “That doesn’t always align with men who are trying to challenge those toxic masculinity views,” says Holmes.

In addition, Holmes highlights the importance of talking about intimacy, despite the fact it’s a heavily stigmatized topic and a deeply personal space. Holmes points out major rabbit holes, like: “What’s the difference for a male, in their perception of being sexual versus being romantic?”

We all must work against toxic masculinity

Holmes defines toxic masculinity as an unhealthy way of looking at masculine gender roles in society, which is often prescribed by societal norms. He adds that we must challenge these norms to create more equity—within spaces of communication as well as power dynamics in family and capitalistic systems.

Getting help is what you make it

“Therapy doesn’t have to be the only way to deal with one’s problems,” says Holmes. Coming from a therapist, this is big. Holmes adds that community—whether your family, faith network, or anyone else you choose—can be extremely helpful. He advocates for networks of support that help men see into themselves.

If you do choose therapy, find someone who’s willing to take the time to build rapport, Holmes suggests. For particularly hesitant clients, he says, “I may not really get to the root of their therapeutic problems until the fourth or sixth session, but that’s okay.”

The myths around men’s mental health are deteriorating

Society maintains a lot of preconceived notions about men, including that they don’t know how to express their feelings. Holmes says this is a myth, and it may just take work to externalize feelings. He adds, “I like to dispel those rumors that men aren’t able or capable to do that and help men tap into those communication resources to do so.”

Upstream prevention is our best bet in tackling the men’s mental health crisis

The reality is that men’s mental health is a crisis. Marginalized groups, including elders, veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and men of color, may be at particular risk, research suggests. Prevention efforts are key, including creating psychologically healthy school and work environments.

Arthur C. Evans, PhD, CEO of the American Psychological Association, told policymakers in March, “These kinds of upstream strategies help ensure that the workforce isn’t limited to people with a license and degree, but instead, teachers and managers.” In short, it’s up to all of us—not just those suffering—to make a better world.

Reaching for the Moon

LUNA

ITALIAN CUISINE IS OWNER VITO SERRADELLA’S MOON SHOT, BRINGING A TASTE OF ITALY TO MECHANICSBURG.

EAT & DRINK / FOODIE FINDS
LUNA ITALIAN CUISINE

There was already a wolf in the neighborhood, so Vito Serradella thought his restaurant’s theme should reflect the moon.

Let us explain: Luna Italian Cuisine opened its doors in March, within Mechanicsburg’s Legacy Park, one of the Susquehanna Valley’s newest planned communities combining residential and retail options. Luna, which means “moon” in Italian, is across the way from Wolf Brewing Co., just as Serradella envisioned.

“Everything is about the moon here,” says Serradella, as he points to the round white pendant lights above the sleek white marble bar. Look closely inside each pendant, and you’ll see a miniature moon glowing within. On one wall, a mural depicts a moonlit scene featuring Serradella’s wife riding an Italian scooter, her hair blowing in the wind.

It’s the first restaurant Serradella, 42, has designed and created from start to finish during his 20-year career in the restaurant industry, which began in his native city of Palermo, Sicily. And he infused the eatery with plenty of authentic touches from his homeland—Italianmade tile, a gorgeous blue ocean-inspired glass chandelier in the entryway, and overhead décor reminiscent of an Italian garden, flowers, and windows. Serradella imagines his Italian grandmother, Nonna, appearing at one of the windows and tossing money down to him in a scene straight out of his childhood.

But it’s the menu that truly reflects Italian taste. Mozzarella and olive oil are imported straight from Italy; several chefs and waiters are Italianborn like Serradella. They whip up a fresh new batch of house-made pasta, daily. Even the espresso machine is Italian-made.

“The menu is different, compared to other restaurants,” says Serradella. “These are things I always cook at home.”

What are some of the characteristics of Sicilian cuisine?

“Number one, the fish. We have a salty beach, so you don’t even have to put salt or seasoning on the fish—it doesn’t make sense,” says Serradella. “My plates are delicate—I don’t like things overdressed, so there are no big strong flavors.”

Instead, he lets natural flavors shine in appetizers such as Mamma Bufala—Italian mozzarella served with pesto, cherry tomatoes and balsamic glaze—and grilled octopus served atop potato puree with sweet and sour onions.

More than a dozen main dishes offer up pastabilities. Two of the most popular dishes so far are Luna Nera, featuring squid ink linguine tossed with a house-made garlic cherry tomato sauce with jumbo shrimp, and orecchiette broccoli rabe, and Italian sausage served in a cream sauce. Serradella points out that his lasagna is made in true Italian style—not with ricotta cheese, as we Americans tend to do—but with creamy bechamel.

“Don’t come and eat chicken parmesan—try new things and be open to new experiences,” Serradella advises, while laughing and noting that chicken parmesan is indeed on the menu, along with salads and pizzas.

There’s a traditional caprese of layered fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, as well as the namesake Luna Salad featuring sundried tomatoes. The Marittima Pizza includes a unique mix of spicy tomato sauce, mussels, calamari, shrimp, and parsley—in an homage to his native Mediterranean island.

Serradella first visited the U.S. nine years ago.

“We came here on vacation, and we liked the area,” he says. “My wife and I bought a restaurant in Camp Hill. It had lots of previous

owners, but we fixed it up, changed it, and people accepted me.”

He’s talking about Vito’s Italian Ristorante on Louther Road, which he still owns and operates. The menu there is more Italian American, featuring subs, pizza, and family-style meals. Serradella also recently purchased a restaurant in Wellsville. And he makes it a priority to travel back to Italy to visit family every three months.

“I like work—I like to be busy,” says Serradella. “Every day I’m learning, we’re all learning. I’m still learning new techniques, educating myself. A lot of work happens in the back, before you serve a plate.”

But there’s one compliment that makes all that hard work worth it.

“When people say it feels like they’re back in Italy,” Serradella says, “that’s when I know.”

At Luna, those are the comments that send him over the moon.

Tip

• For those who don’t like shellfish, this works great with salmon cubes. For vegans, try using extra firm tofu or tempeh!

Tip

• You can easily only use ½ of a watermelon and halve all the ingredients. This also makes a great summer salad! Serve over a bed of arugula, and toss with your lemon dressing.

¼ cup honey

¼ cup olive oil

1 tsp salt, or to taste

Garnishes

½ red onion, thinly sliced

1 cup feta

½ cup mint, chopped finely

Instructions

1. Prepare watermelon cubes, and skewer.

2. Mix together lemon juice, zest, honey, olive oil, and salt.

TANDOORI CHICKEN KABOBS

A recipe so packed with flavor, your neighbors will want to come to dinner when you’re out grilling!

5 large chicken breasts, cut into kabob sized cubes

1 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp chili powder

½ tsp curry powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp black pepper

1 Tbsp garlic salt (to taste)

½ tsp ground coriander

½ tsp ground cardamom

2 Tbsp brown sugar

Cayenne pepper to taste

2 cups Greek yogurt (I’d advise using full fat yogurt)

Juice of 2 lemons

1/2 – 6 oz jar tomato paste

1/4 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped

6 cloves garlic, pressed

Optional Vegetables: red onion, cubed red pepper, cubed mushrooms, halved cherry tomatoes

2. Stir in tomato paste and then yogurt. Once everything is well combined, stir in chicken cubes.

3. Cover, and place in the refrigerator for 5-24 hours.

4. When ready, carefully place chicken and veggies of your choice on skewers, and place on the grill. They take about 5-10 minutes, depending on grill temp.

5. Cook until chicken is golden brown, reached 165°, and juices run clear.

6. Remove from the grill, and allow to reset for 5 minutes. Serve, and enjoy!

Heat Up The

Get sizzling this summer with these simple grilling hacks |
BY
Diana Smedley, Foodie and Owner of Lancaster Gift Box

I’ve always liked building fires and eating burgers, so it was almost inevitable that I’d venture to master the art of grilling. There’s something so primal about using live fire to cook that makes me feel even more connected to the food I grill; so much so that I find every opportunity to grill all year round.

Whether you’re a seasoned veteran, weekend warrior, or just bought your first grill, I think you’ll find these tips helpful to elevate your grilling game. Always remember, perfecting your grilling skills is a life-long journey!

Embellish Your Condiments

Shake-up your sauce routine by adding pantry staples to your favorite condiments. These are best made the day before you plan to grill, so the flavors have time to marinate together. Simply whisk all ingredients till they are smooth and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Below are six ways to do just that:

curry ketchup → ½ c ketchup + 1½ tsp lime juice + ½ tsp curry powder

BBQ Ketchup → ½ c ketchup + 4 Tbsp bbq sauce + 2 tsp packed brown sugar

Sesame & Scallion Mustard → ½ c Dijon mustard + ¼ c sesame oil + 1 garlic clove, diced + 6 scallions, sliced thin + 2 Tbsp red-wine vinegar + salt & pepper to taste

Garlic Mayo → ½ c mayo + 2 cloves garlic, minced + 2 tsp lemon juice + salt to taste

Sweet Chili Mayo → ½ c mayo + 3 tsp Thai chili sauce + 1-2 tsp gochujang sauce

Za’atar Yogurt → ½ c plain yogurt + 2 garlic cloves, minced + 1 tsp Za’atar spice + 2 Tbsp lemon juice + salt to taste

Mustard Sauce: Two Ways

Carolina Gold Mustard BBQ Sauce is attributed to German immigrants who brought their love of mustard to South Carolina. Its vibrant yellow color is why it was coined ‘Carolina Gold,’ but I think this zesty sauce has as much of a place on your table in Lancaster County as it does in the South! I like to use it as a marinade for meats, and you can also use it to make a crowdpleasing dip for pretzels. Here’s how to do it:

Carolina

Gold Mustard

BBQ Sauce ↓

3/4 c yellow mustard

¼ c stone ground mustard

¼ c apple cider vinegar

2 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 Tbsp ketchup

1 Tbsp hot sauce

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp chili powder

Mix all ingredients until smooth. Let the flavors meld for a day before you marinate your meats. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Carolina Gold

Pretzel Dip ↓

½ c plain yogurt or mayo

¼ c Carolina gold mustard bbq sauce

salt & pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients until smooth. Refrigerate for 30 minutes, then serve. This pretzel dip also makes a great sauce for pretzel-crusted chicken if you don’t want to get hot grilling this summer.

Start Prep Work Before Starting Your grill

It takes my grill 15 minutes to get to 500F and then I wait another 10 minutes before I get cooking. If you think your prep will take a bit longer than 25 minutes, start before you heat-up your grill. Make sure everything is chopped, oiled, seasoned, and ready to hit the heat. By having all your ingredients ready to go, you’ll have a much more relaxing experience and can focus on cooking everything to perfection.

Sequence Your Grilling & Create Heat Zones

Because I let my grill get up to 500F, I always turn down the heat to a mediumlow, which gets around 350F right before cooking. This makes it easier to cook without completely charring your dinner.

Next, sequence your ingredients & find your hotspots–start your vegetable on the hottest spot since they will take a bit longer than your meat. The hot spot will be directly over open flames and more towards the middle. Once your veggies have a head start and good color, move them to a cooler part of the grill and start your meat on the highest heat zone. Once the meat has a nice sear, move it away from that hot spot to keep it moist.

Put Your Cast Iron on the Grill

Instead of wrapping your onions and peppers in foil for their trip to the grill, simply heat up your favorite cast iron skillet on your grill. Before you heat the grill, put the cast iron on the grill and let them heat up together, like you would with a pizza oven.

Use your cast iron on the grill to make pizzas, bake cobblers, stew tomatoes, or even create a smoky breakfast hash. Anything you cook in a pan can be grilled if you use a cast-iron skillet–don’t be afraid to experiment!

Build-A-Burger Bar

When I’m grilling for a crowd, I usually set up a builda-burger station. Everyone can choose all their favorite toppings, and all the fixings can be prepped ahead of time. My build-a-burger station elements include toasted and untoasted buns, a few sauces (see suggestions above), lettuce, tomato, pickles, raw and grilled onions (sometimes fried), and bacon. I recommend melting the cheese on the burgers when they are on the grill, but use a few of your favorites–cheddar isn’t the only burger-worthy cheese.

When forming burgers for the grill, make them ¾ inch to 1 inch thick and a bit larger than your buns since they will shrink. I always use brioche buns, for my burgers, but go for the classic sesame if that’s your thing.

Basic Burger Total Timing: Medium Rare 6-7 minutes, Medium 7-8 minutes, Medium Well 9 minutes. For a crowd I usually cook my burgers to medium.

Relax a Little

Just because you’re firing-up the grill, it doesn’t mean that everything you’re preparing needs to touch the flame. Choose one side that doesn’t even need to be cooked and can be assembled by one of your guests, such as a salad of any sort. Furthermore, consider getting ice cream sandwiches or a pie for dessert to cool off and relax at the end of your meal. Afterall, grilling season is summer season, a time to slow down and enjoy the long warm days.
