Northampton Borough receives Food bank grant, Welcomes police K-9

In today’s column, we are all going to Miller’s Field in Northampton with Joe Tanzosh. The year is 1936.

Miller’s Field today is home to numerous businesses. The popular field was located to the rear of the Roxy Theatre and the former Miller’s Department Store. The owner, Henry Miller, was a strong supporter of sports in Northampton.

The Konkrete Kids played football there before Wolf Field was built by the WPA. Semiprofressional baseball was also played there.

The Northampton Buffalos and Holy Name teams played on the field.

Joe recalls, “Mike Lisetski was the flashy short stop on the team. He would later be my baseball coach at Northampton High School. The games were well attended with more than a thousand fans. We could not afford a

ticket, so we would climb up on box cars of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, which were on a railroad siding. The field was enclosed with wooden fences. It was difficult to jump the fence.”

Joe’s parents were more interested in music than baseball. They purchased a violin. It was paid for with monthly payments of $5. It took more than a year to pay for the $75 instrument. Lessons were 25 cents an hour at the Odd Fellows Hall, now the Schisler Funeral Home.

Joe took lessons for one year, saying, “I didn’t have an ear for music.”

Another familiar visitor to Washington Avenue was the Knights Life Insurance agent. All the families wanted insurance for their children. They were called 5-cent policies, and the premiums were collected monthly by

During reports, Police Chief Gary West shared that the police department had a total of 331 incidents for the month of March, which included 33 traffic citations issued, nine written and verbal warnings issued, four arrests made for three DUIs and one accident involving property damage (hit and run), three reportable accidents, and four non-reportable accidents.

Chief West also announced that secretary Stephanie Heckman has turned in her letter of resignation, so the township and police department will be seeking a joint secretary.

Fire Police Captain Jason Harhart reported that the Klecknersville Rangers Vol. Fire Co. responded to 69 ambulance calls during the month of March and 30 fire calls, which included one fire, three motor vehicle accidents, two automatic fire alarms, five ambulance assists, two carbon monoxide alarms, two smoke investigations, one gas leak, one tree down, seven wires down, and six mutual aid calls for three fires with Lehigh Township, two fire alarms with Bath, and one mountain fire

The Northampton Borough Council met Thursday, April 6 to discuss the grant received by the Northampton Food Bank, consider various requests, appoint PSAB delegates, consider a zoning officer candidate, and to welcome a new K-9 to the police department.

First, Kelly Frantz from the Northampton Food Bank announced that she has received a $300,000 grant, which will allow

the food bank to put in an additional walk-in freezer, new lighting, commercial refrigerators, and more heavy-duty shelving.

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop M Bethlehem are advising residents to be mindful of phone calls that are being made to the public indicating the caller is an official from PSP Bethlehem.

The PSP Bethlehem Station has been receiving phone calls from residents indicating they have received a phone call from the PSP Bethlehem Station requesting information from the caller.

The Pennsylvania State Police

When Joe entered Northampton High School, his mother, Lucy, had some motherly advice. She said, “You must take the commercial course, so you can get a good job and don’t have to

Joe remembers, “Shorthand was my favorite subject, and after much practice, I reached 140 words a minute. Mike Lisetski was our history teacher. We didn’t call it social studies then, just solid history. Nellie Sloyer was our English teacher. If there was mischief, she had you stand in the hall in front of her room for one week.”

You know the consequences if this method of discipline was used in our schools today.

“Our teachers were fine, and we received a good education,” Joe says.

ton, have recently welcomed Rev. Joel Biggers to service in both churches. Pastor Biggers has been in ministry for 23 years following his graduation from San Diego State University and Methodist Theological School of Ohio. He has served in a campus ministry position as well as multiple congregations throughout his career. His father preceded him in ministry where he grew up in rural Ohio.

Both congregations will share his new ministry in the Northampton area.

When asked about the challenges of two churches Pastor Biggers has remarked, “Sundays

are really very busy days, but once you get the service timing worked out things work very well.”

Pastor Biggers enjoys ministerial standing in the United Church of Christ and looks forward to serving both congregations who enjoy his personality and leadership style.

The concept of shared ministry, which was common well into the mid-20th century, is returning as churches throughout the country struggle to retain membership and face a shortage of qualified candidates for open pulpits across many denominations.

Pastor Biggers conducts Sunday worship at St. Peter’s beginning at 9 a.m. and St. Paul’s at 10:30 a.m. Both services are also available to view online.

Natural Perspectives

For the healthMinded individual

Cells eating Badly

If I told you that your diet plays a large role in how you feel and function would that be a surprise to you? Of course not. We all know that eating well is the foundation on which health fulcrums upon. It’s a direct correlation that nobody can refute. We can take this undeniable truth and apply it on a much smaller scale down to the cellular level.

What this means is when you are eating well there is, of course, the trickle-down effect to each and every single cell in your body. All the good food taken in whittles down from the initial macro nutrient chunks of food we chew into micro-nutrients that the cells gobble up. When you have an abundance of vegetables, fruits, and clean, unadulterated proteins, you get a boatload of life sustaining and enhancing tidbits that get down into every nook and cranny to allow for optimal function. That’s how this whole thing works. Conversely, when you are eating badly, your cells are eating badly and poor health ensues.

Think about how much garbage you eat on a regular basis. If you feel this statement is a little heavy handed, it was meant to be. You just don’t eat well and because of that you don’t feel well, and your body doesn’t function as

well as it can.

Now do not think I am immune from such a claim. When I am not eating well my body doesn’t feel well. If you give your body a ton of sugar, you will feel the effects virtually immediately. Depending on your age, if you eat poorly, it could take days of eating better to correct the aftermath of our own doing even slightly.

If you eat badly you have foggy thinking. Aches in the joints. Problems with bowel function, all function for that matter depending on your various issues at hand. Said a different way, de-

cades of feeding cells poorly may have led to the sad state of health you find yourself in today. Don’t be mad at me. I am simply stating the obvious.

Because the overall diets are awful today, we see more and more people on a whole list of drugs. You can correct this if you want to. Food will be your medicine or medicine will be your food. By and large, it’s your own choice.

Look, it is not too far-fetched to say that your food is either the poison or the antidote. When did we forget that?

“But Dr. Clearie, my kidneys are too far gone to drink water. I can’t eat vegetables because I have

Can we even hear ourselves?

It’s the cells eating badly that got us all into this mess in the first place. The cells can only eat bad when we put bad stuff in the way upstream aka our mouths.

When you have really had enough of the nonsense all around you, may I suggest getting back to the basics of eating and drinking better overall? Magically you will feel, look and function better. It really isn’t that difficult, is it?

with Plainfield Township.

Public Works Director Craig Hoffman announced that Gene Mackes is retiring after 8.5 years with the Public Works Department. Supervisors unanimously approved new hires Jonathan Good and Spencer Tacker for municipal worker positions.

Hoffman also updated the announcement for 2023 seal coat projects, which now includes Derhammer Road, North Oaks Road, Bigley Road, Vista Drive, Alpine Drive, South Mink Road between 946 and West Scenic Drive, Hillcrest Lane, Applebutter Lane, Crest Vue Circle, and Horseshoe Road.

Parks and Recreation Chairperson Jodie Hartzell requested that the board consider a shortterm solution for adding another pickleball court. Supervisors approved adding temporary taped lines to the basketball court when it gets resurfaced, which will have a net that can be chained to the fence on either side of the court when it is not being used for basketball.

Hartzell was also given the go-ahead to pursue a DCED grant to put an additional pickleball court in. However, the application would be for 2024, so if approved, residents would not see the addition until 2025.

In other news, Township Engineer Kevin Horvath presented cost estimates for alternative plans for restoring, remediating, maintaining, and/or vacating Trach Road: Removal of the roadway and restoring the road to preexisting conditions would cost approximately $89,000; remediation of the roadway including regrading the existing aggregate and creating a new infiltration channel would cost approximately $125,000; maintaining the existing road would cost approximately $2,700 annually; and vacating the road would leave it up to the property owners that border the road to do with it as they please.

However, contiguous property owners Jeffrey Henderson and Rudy Klein voiced that they do not want the roadway to be restored to pre existing conditions because doing so would inhibit crop growth. Henderson and Klein expressed that they are not opposed to vacating the road, but that they would prefer the road to be remediated in order to resolve the erosion issues.

Supervisors did not yet vote on which option they prefer, but unanimously voted to vacate Trach Road in order to move forward with the process.

Township Solicitor David M. Backenstoe will move forward with drafting an ordinance to determine the metes and bounds, and then the hearing will have to be advertised before

it is held, which could put the timeframe for the hearing within two to three months.

In other business, Township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner expressed that residents have been complaining about speeding on South Mink Road. Chief West and Public Works Director Hoffman will work together to post additional speed limit signs along the road to try to mitigate the speeding.

Next, the board unanimously approved the adoption of the Agritourism/Agritainment Ordinance. Agritourism is an agriculturally based operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm or ranch such as farmers markets, roadside markets/ stands, u-pick operations, corn mazes, petting farms, etc., and agritainment is farm-based entertainment including activities such as hayrides, wine tasting,

and harvest festivals.

The ordinance defines and lists criteria for each and states that they are allowed in every zoning district in the township as a special exception use. Individuals and farmers that want to take advantage of the ordinance to generate additional revenue can go to the Zoning Hearing Board and show that they comply with the basic criteria.

Following, supervisors approved a resolution to allow Manager Steiner to apply for the Northampton County Livable Landscapes grant to update the township’s open space plan and incorporate other areas of parks and recreation. The final estimate Steiner received for the work was $95,000, which the township would be responsible for half of because the grant stipulates that it will

match 50% of the project costs if approved.

Last, the township received two bids during the third round of bidding for the sale of Schiavone Farm, which was appraised at approximately $400,000. Red Edge Farm bid $200,000 and has the right of first refusal due to their bids during previous rounds. Phil Ronca bid $351,000, and supervisors unanimously voted to approve

Ronca’s bid.

However, since Red Edge Farm has the right of first refusal, they will be given the opportunity to match or exceed Ronca’s bid of $351,000 if they wish to purchase the farm, or the farm will be sold to Ronca.

Northampton native Serves aboard Navy Warship in Norfolk

Submitted by BRITTANY CROCKER

Seaman Noah Mercado, a native of Northampton, serves aboard a U.S. Navy warship operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.

Mercado joined the Navy two years ago. Today, Mercado serves as a personnel specialist aboard USS Forrest Sherman.

“I was in college during the pandemic and didn't enjoy online classes,” said Mercado. “I felt like I was wasting my time and wanted to do something real, so I found a Navy recruiter.”

Growing up in Northampton, Mercado attended Northampton Area High School and graduated in 2018.

Skills and values similar to those found in Northampton led to success in the military.

“Playing lacrosse, I learned that even if you're not set up for success, you can still set yourself up to succeed with hard work,” said Mercado.

These lessons have helped Mercado while serving aboard USS Forrest Sherman.

Arleigh Burke-class guidedmissile destroyers provide a wide range of warfighting capabilities in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface environments.

A Navy destroyer is a multimission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

More than 300 sailors serve aboard USS USS Forrest Sherman. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times, according to Navy officials.

As a member of the Navy, Mercado is part of a world-class organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“We're always deployed,” said Mercado. “We're one of the only branches that is going out continuously to project power at sea.”

With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.

"Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "This is our calling. And I cannot imag-

ine a calling more worthy."

Mercado and the sailors they serve will have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.

“I'm proud of getting my master helmsman qualification,” said Mercado. "I drove the ship into port when we returned from our most recent deployment."

As Mercado and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

“I like being a part of a long tradition of sailors,” added Mercado. "We take tradition seriously, and I've always enjoyed learning the history of the Navy. I'm proud to be a part of that lineage."

Mercado is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I want to thank my parents, my sisters and my grandmother for their support,” added Mercado. "We miss each other, but they're happy to see me doing what I love."

Council congratulated Frantz on the grant and for her hard work and dedication to the food bank.

Next, council unanimously approved the request from Central Assembly of God for the use of both Municipal Park pavilions on Sunday, September 10 in addition to the use of the borough’s permanent bandshell.

Council also unanimously approved the request from the Lappawinzo Fish and Game Association to use the borough’s portable band trailer on Saturday, June 10, as well as the request from the Diamond Volunteer Fire Company of Walnutport to use the portable band trailer on Friday, June 30 through Sunday, July 2.

Following, council unanimously approved the request from the Northampton Fire Department to conduct the fourth annual Firefighter’s Parade on

Saturday, July 22 beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m., which will be held in conjunction with the Community Days Fair.

Every year, council appoints a delegate and an alternate delegate to attend the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs conference, which will be held June 4 through June 7. The delegate has the authority to vote on matters of importance and the alternate(s) would serve in the absence of the delegate.

This year, council approved for Mayor Anthony Pristash to serve as the delegate. President Julia Kutzler and Councilwoman Bonnie Almond will serve as alternates.

In other news, council has received an application from Jerry Serensits for the borough’s zoning officer position.

A committee of President Kutzler, Councilman Anthony S. Lopsonzski, Councilwoman Judith Haldeman, and Councilman Ronald Glassic will meet with Serensits in the coming weeks to discuss his application and any questions that council may have for him or that he may have for council.

During reports, the administration and finance committee announced that Ed Pany received $2,000 from Buzzi Unicem USA for the museum and that the borough received a check from Northampton County in the amount of $11,732.50 for the 2021-2022 Hotel Tax Grant payout.

Councilwoman Haldeman announced that work continues at the swimming pool, and that the Building, Land and Recreation Committee is working on restructuring the rules and regulations, which may include a price increase for season passes. Passes will go on sale at the Recreation Center on Monday, May 1.

Councilman Trevor Stone shared that the Planning Commission will meet on Wednesday, April 12 to consider a sketch plan review of David and William Moyer to possibly combine four individual properties into one property in the 2400 block of Dewey Avenue for the purpose of building 35-40 self-storage units.

Stone also announced that the police sponsored fishing contest will take place on Saturday, April 22 behind 1401 Laubach Ave. in the Hokendauqua Creek.

Councilman Glassic announced the borough has received notification from Allen Township that the Howertown Road bridge north of Route 329 will be onelane traffic only beginning on or about May 1 through October 18. Northbound traffic will be allowed, southbound traffic will be detoured.

In other business, Solicitor Brian Panella announced that Councilwoman Sandra Sayuk has submitted her letter of resignation, which will be voted on during the April 20 meeting. Council will be looking for applicants from Ward 4 to fill her position.

Last but certainly not least as he was the highlight of the night, Chico, a Belgian Malinois pup, was welcomed as the newest member of the Northampton Borough Police Department’s K-9 unit with his handler, Officer Geoffrey Perry.

Upcoming Northampton

Borough Council meetings will be held Thursday, April 20 and Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the borough’s municipal offices, located at 1401 Laubach Ave.
